Explained: Impact of Donald Trump's attack on preferential trade with India
Tumblr media
Current Affairs
United States president Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a plan to end preferential trade treatment for India, withdrawing benefits under a nearly 50-year-old programme for up to $5.6 billion worth of New Delhi’s exports to America.
The move comes after over a year of back-and-forth between the two countries, and pressure exerted upon the Trump administration by the American dairy export and medical devices lobbies.
“I am taking this step because, after intensive engagement between the United States and the government of India, I have determined that India has not assured the United States that it will provide equitable and reasonable access to the markets of India,” Trump said in a letter to Congress representatives on Tuesday early morning.
According to World Bank data, India is currently the largest beneficiary of the ‘generalised system of preferences’ (GSP) programme, a trade initiative that was first started back in the 1970s.
India’s commerce ministry, however, has downplayed the impact of the move, saying that withdrawal of GSP benefits will have a “minimal and moderate impact”.
“The total GSP benefits amount to about $190 million on overall exports of $5.6 billion between the two countries,” commerce secretary Anup Wadhawan said at a press conference on Tuesday morning.
“We had worked out a meaningful package that covered the US’ concerns but they made additional requests which were not acceptable at this time,” he added. “The GSP system is envisaged as a non-reciprocal benefit to developing countries.”..Read More

A glimpse into the latest blockchain initiative in India
As per the latest news on blockchain technology, the Coffee Board of India has recently pioneered the pilot of blockchain-driven e-marketplace. The initiative has been taken to coalesce coffee farmers with markets. The Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced this development recently. The project was announced back in September 2018 by Suresh Prabhu, Minister for Commerce and Industry.
Tumblr media
The Coffee Board is an organization that is backed by the MCI in order to promote coffee production in India. The venture will result in the reduction of intermediaries between coffee farmers and consumers. The blockchain-driven marketplace will facilitate the direct transaction between coffee producers and multiple buyers. This will enable better returns for the growers. The money that was consumed earlier by the middlemen can be put together and added to the income of coffee growers.
The initiative has been named as the Coffee Blockchain initiative. The pilot of the initiative has been activated simultaneously by Jose Dauster Sette, executive director of the International Coffee Organization, Nairobi and by India's commerce secretary, Anup Wadhawan. This is reportedly the third attempt at creating a coffee blockchain after France and Ethiopia.
The project took six months to be unveiled after its announcement due to the challenge of having more than 20 stakeholders on board from three different countries testing the platform. This statement has come from Srivatsa Krishna, chief executive officer and secretary of the Coffee Board. In India, coffee cultivation takes place in about 4,54,000 hectares of land by 3,66,000 farmers. Among them, 95 percent are small-scale farmers whose income is still meager. Krishna said that the primary objective behind using blockchain is to induce transparency in the Indian coffee trade, maintain traceability of coffee from bean to cup, and allow fairer income possibility for the labor put in by the coffee growers.
According to the crypto technology news, the project has been initiated in collaboration with Eka Software Solutions. It is one of the global leaders in Digital Commodity Management platforms for agriculture, especially for the development of blockchain-based marketplace applications. Manav Garg, the CEO, and Founder of Eka Software Solutions has stated that the main idea behind using blockchain is to record the first smart contract on the blockchain with more than 20 stakeholders and establish trust in the e-marketplace. Garg further added that this activation will aid the Coffee Board of India in driving the Indian coffee trade leave an impression on the global premium market. He firmly believes that India will become one of the top three coffee producers in the world.
According to Krishna, the Coffee Board is also testing a couple of other vendors for testing blockchain-based solutions. However, it found the one from Eka Software Solutions the most suitable for the time being.
The official statement from the Coffee Board mentions that the stakeholders such as coffee farmers, curers, traders, exporters, importers, rosters, and retailers will be required to register on the new blockchain-based platform before making trade transactions. For example, a farmer has to store details about the place where coffee is grown, elevation details, crop details, certificates or any other relevant information.
The blockchain vendor is excited about this project and reckons that digitization of agriculture in India would curb waste. The deployment of blockchain technology can prove to be fruitful for other agricultural commodities too. Coffee on blockchain is the first step towards achieving the significant goal as digitization of agriculture in India. In a country like India where farmers struggle to make ends meet, convincing for blockchain technology is still a challenging affair.

India work on Services, Cannot Match Chinese Manufacturing says China
India urged to export services to the narrow deficit with China.
East India Company Style, India should focus on providing Coolie Labor and Raw Material says China
India has a keen interest in expanding exports to China through the China International Import Expo (CIIE), as the South Asian country hopes that any such increase could help reduce its trade deficit and ease depreciation pressure on the rupee. However, India should export services like IT-related services instead of commodities to narrow the deficit with China, experts said.
On Tuesday, subsidiaries of the China National Machinery Industry Corp (Sinomach) signed 21 import purchasing contracts.
One contract was signed with India-based salt supplier Rankers International for industrial salt, Sinomach told the Global Times on Thursday.
On Tuesday, India-based Jay Shree Tea & Industries signed a $1 million export contract with China’s State-owned grain trader COFCO for exports of Indian black tea to China, according to a statement released by the Indian embassy in Beijing.
The statement said that China is India’s 10th-largest tea export destination, but this ranking is “poised to be improved” with more Indian tea finding its way into the Chinese market.
At the CIIE, the Global Times saw that agricultural products including sugar, rice, soybean meal and rapeseed meal were showcased at the Indian National Pavilion. Tourism and pharmaceutical services were also on display.
“The expo is going very well. So far, we have had inquiries for Indian rice, sugar, black tea, soybeans, soymeal, rapeseed meal and spices,” Manoj Kumar, assistant manager of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India, said, noting that business prospects are bright. China can replace Britain as the future East India Company.
The Indian and Chinese governments are working to resolve the bilateral trade deficit. According to the Economic Times on Wednesday, Indian Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan, who is visiting Shanghai to attend the CIIE, has expressed concerns to Chinese government officials regarding the large trade deficit. However unlikely too as only China has to gain, India will only lose.
China imported $15.55 billion worth of goods from India while it exported $64.2 billion in products to India in the first 10 months this year, customs figures showed. almost another 100 Billion entered invisibly, through shipped products either via mail or shown as imported from other Chinese owned companies in other countries like Vietnam, Bangladesh, etc.
Wang Haixia, an expert with the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, told the Global Times on Thursday that India values the Chinese market.
The potential demand from China could drive India’s industrial output and boost its economy, which, despite a fast GDP growth rate, is still vulnerable to external factors such as oil price hikes and the all-out war declared by China against the Indian Sub-Continent
Zhao Gancheng, director of the South Asia Studies Department at the Shanghai Institute for International Studies, forecast that Indian companies would be more active in future CIIEs, following the publicity given to this year’s CIIE deals. “This is the first CIIE, and Indian companies don’t know much about it. When Indian companies hear about the deals signed during this event, I think they will be more motivated to attend future CIIEs, as they lose thier own manufacturing base and become dependent on Chinese Imports” he noted.
However, experts pointed out that Indian’s high expectations for expanding exports to China may not translate into the desired results, as china has protected her market, whereas India has left hers wide open. “Most exports from India to China are low value-added primary commodities, so the scope for growth is very limited,” Wang said.
Experts also urged India to consider exporting industries in which it has an advantage such as Coolie based IT-related services. She also suggested that the best way to shrink India’s trade deficit with China is to roll out appealing policies to attract Chinese companies to set up local factories and destroy Indian manufacturing capabilities and work as coolies in chinese owned factories
Zhao noted that India can export more agricultural products to China as she did to Britain under the East India Company.

Trump move to end preferential trade treatment won't hurt India much: Govt
Tumblr media
Economy News
India does not plan to impose retaliatory tariffs on US goods after US President Donald Trump said he intends to end India's preferential trade treatment, a top trade official said on Tuesday.
Anup Wadhawan said the withdrawal of the Generalised System of Preferences for Indian products would have limited impact.
The two countries had been working on a trade package to address each other's concerns, he said.Under the GSP program, India exports $5.6 billion worth of goods to the United States duty-free.
Arguing that New Delhi had failed to assure America that it would provide equitable and reasonable access to its markets in numerous sectors, US President Donald Trump on Monday informed the US Congress about his intent to terminate the designation of India and Turkey as a beneficiary developing country under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) programme.
In a letter to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, Trump said he was determined that New Delhi had "not assured" the United States that it would "provide equitable and reasonable access" to the markets of India.
"I will continue to assess whether the Government of India is providing equitable and reasonable access to its markets, in accordance with the GSP eligibility criteria," Trump said in his letter, a copy of which was released to the press.
In a separate letter, Trump also informed the Congress of his intent to terminate the GSP beneficiary designation of Turkey. This was primarily because the economy of Turkey had improved a lot in the last four-and-a-half decades, he said...Read More
