THOUGHTS ON: Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon
Overall Assessment
Let’s not speak of this again || Awful || Bad || Okay || Entertaining || Good || Really Good || Amazeballs || What is this vision of glory I’ve witnessed?!
The Idea
I watch primarily ongoing shows and shows I’ve wanted to re-watch.  Obviously I pepper in recommendations or shows I’ve always wanted to watch.  However, often I won’t know what to watch and will default to the alphabetical list in the catalogue. I’ll start the next show on the list.  It might be a show I’ve never watched, hadn’t planned on re-watching but want to, or it might even be a show I’d previously dropped and decide to try it out again. The progress is slow and I’m still in the As.  Some shows I’ve ditched, and some I’ve kept. They might not all be winners, but ultimately, I’ve found some entertaining watches.
This time, I watched Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon:

Thoughts
When I think of seinen harem anime, there are two major kinds that come to mind.  The first is the comic slice-of-life romcom that usually takes place in a school club or other similar typical setting.  The second is in some type of alternate or post-apocalyptic universe where everyone has some sort of special ability.  Honestly, I find the first type a bit more enjoyable.  The humor and the romance seems more adequately placed in the first, while in the second type it feels forced.  It’s also way out of place in an action series.  I mean, is there really a need to make boobie jokes while humanity as you know it is collapsing around you in a fiery plague of death and destruction?
35th Test Platoon is an example of the latter, and unfortunately, it doesn’t stray too far from the typical action-harem tropes.  There’s inappropriate fan-service that’s inappropriately timed and is inclusive of the most popular fan-service fare: accidental titty squeezes, blown up skirt angles, revealing cosplay, size competitions, and very phallic weapons.
Of course, I expected all of this, but I will say that, in its favor, 35th Test Platoon actually does have quite a bit of heart.  All our female characters--as typical as they may be--do have their own unique stories and personalities that make them function as a team.  While it’s clear that many are romantically interested in our main hero Takeru, more time is spent upon the platoon as a whole rather than on each individual girls infatuation with Takeru.
Time and time again, Takeru asks to let him carry their burdens on his shoulder, but also time and time again, he requires and requests the help of the rest of his platoon.   Like any good leader, as the captain of the 35th Test Platoon, Takeru takes the burden on himself but binds together his platoon to work together to overcome whatever obstacle is in the way.  In the end, his leadership allows him to let his team help him with his particular burdens, not only growing closer to each of the girls but also allowing the girls to grow closer together.
While there wasn’t much different about 35th Test Platoon and I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to the casual anime fan or the anime fan who isn’t a fan of this genre regardless, I do think it’s strength comes from the cast working as a team in a team environment.   Often, harem have all the female characters at odds with one another, fighting over the main male character, and while there is some of that in 35th Test Platoon, largely the point is bringing them altogether to work as a functioning unit.  From the stubborn Ootori, to the lone-wolf Suginami, the joyful Usagi, and the outcasted Mari, this batch of misfits comes together.  Yes, it takes a dude to do it (*yawn* genre *yawn*), but it’s far better than the raging bitchfest of some other shows that may come to mind.
All in all, I gave it a 2.5 star rating on Anime-Planet, but if you’re a fan of the genre, you may find yourself enjoying what makes this slightly different than other action-harem anime.

Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai Another Mission 2
Tumblr media
Author: Touki Yanagimi
Illustrator: Kippu
Label: Fujimi Fantasia Bunko
Release Date: 20 August 2016
My Score: 4/5
This is the true final volume of the series. Like the first one, this volume is made up of short stories, most of which take place between volumes 2 and 5 and were originally published in magazines before being collected here. The exceptions to this are the final two stories that were written specifically for this volume and take place after the end of volume 13.
In the first story, Lapis starts to want to act more like a little sister, since she’s meant to be Takeru’s, and follows examples from a light novel. While I had some laughs at Lapis’ antics in this story, my favourite part was Takeru reflecting on his relationship with Kiseki. It was interesting and Lapis is great.
The second story is all about Usagi as her parents once again put the pressure on her to get married so she lies and says that Takeru is her boyfriend and they have dinner with her parents. It’s a pretty sweet story and Usagi fans will likely be very satisfied with it but it doesn’t really explore the abuse that Usagi faced as much as I wanted it too. At least she seems to be out of that house for good now. My favourite parts of the story were Mari, Ouka and Ikaruga tailing the two and trying to eavesdrop on them and their reactions to the idea of Takeru dating Usagi.
In the third story, Takeru mentions to Nagaru how he wants to experience a normal day so the gang goes to the mall. They shop (this is where the winter clothes in volume 8 came from, apparently) and go bowling and do some other fun stuff. This story just made me feel really happy and warm. It was so fluffy and cute. I loved it.
In the fourth story, the gang goes undercover at a fast food joint that only hires lady employees and has some skeevy uniforms. I kind of lost interest in this one the moment Takeru started ogling the short skirts but I think this one would be good for Hayato fans as he’s pretty amusing in this one.
The fourth story follows Nacht and Haunted on their day off. It’s fluffier than you’d think and I enjoyed it but don’t have much to say about it.
The fifth and sixth stories serve as an extended epilogue to the series as we see what the characters are up to 5 years later. As we learnt from the end of volume 13, Ouka, Takeru, Ikaruga and Usagi all work for Exe and Mari is a teacher, though she sometimes helps out on missions. Ikaruga is basically Kiseki’s co-parent together with Takeru as she monitors Kiseki and Kanaria attends the academy now. In the fifth story, Takeru, Ouka, Ikaruga, Usagi, Mari and Kiseki hang out for a day. It’s very cute and satisfying but I was sad that Kanaria wasn’t in it. Hell, I’m not sure that Kanaria was even mentioned. The sixth story features a short reunion between Lapis and Takeru and it’s very sweet and I teared up a bit. If you were disappointed with the conclusion to the romance in volume 13, I don’t think these stories will satisfy you but, given that I didn’t care about the romance, I was fine with it. I’m actually a bit glad they didn’t reveal who Takeru ends up with as I likely would’ve been disappointed regardless of the answer and I appreciate the series focus on friendship, camaraderie and found family over romance so it would have felt off to focus on who Takeru ended up with over the group’s bonds.
Overall, this volume was pure fanservice and I enjoyed most of it. Some stories were definitely better than others but I had a lot of fun with it overall and I think it was the best way to send off most of the characters. But, again, could have done with a lot more Kanaria. The volume is definitely a must-read if you’re a fan of the series.
Despite my love for this series, I’m not sure whether I’ll be reading more from Yanagimi any time soon. I’ll be giving their other stuff a go but I find Yanagimi’s humour to be a turn-off and I don’t have the best impression of the author based off the afterwords in this series. Hell, I doubt I would have gotten far in this series if I hadn’t encountered the English translation years earlier and unexpectedly loved it. So, I’ll see what their other stuff is like before I decide to read more.
By the way, I expect my posts will be slowing down after this since I’ll be going back to mainly reading what’s available on my BookWalker Kadokawa Subscription so it sometimes takes a while of searching through volumes before I find something I like enough to finish.
