We're doomed
Tumblr media
The 'we' of course is all of humanity and a few other gazillion sentient beings.
And we don't seem to care given our continued proclivity to carry on with business as usual.
COP28: what a joke.
As if another talking shop was going to eviscerate the oil and gas producers or call time on our desire for more...consumption.
"Ah, you ol' misery guts."
Yes, that's right!
I am miserable but it's actually a lot worse than that. I feel a deep sense of guilt and leaden foreboding and can't help feel that the Darwinian experiment that makes us behave like we're Gods -- yes, Gods I say -- has gone desperately, terribly wrong.
Perhaps, though, this is our lot: a slow form of inexorable suicide.
In that space, I can't help but feel I've outlived any usefulness I might have had.
"Nihilist, to boot."
Guilty, I suppose.
...
Sorry that today's pithy little post isn't more upbeat but I can't write with a faux expression of hope or solution-mongering -- as if either of those will do us much good.
Blessings, Julian

Encounters at the End of the World
I image this would be his favourite movie, since it appears to be people entirely by different versions of himself. Antarctica is an continent of Werner Herzogs.
I am finally starting to feel inspirer to return to my Mythos story. Would people be interested in a story about a blind reporter who's grandmother was a Cthulhu cultist, falling in love with a Deep One, against the backdrop of the (possible) end of the world? Maybe include; radioactive shoggoths, grand theft auto-ing in an authomatic wheelchair, and cops getting eaten.

Note
how has the anthopocene affected cephalopods, if at all?
For some cephalopods, it's been totally fine (for now). For others, it's decreasing their geographic range. All animals have a range of temperatures they're happy at. For some cephalopods, the temperature is getting prohibitively hot in some areas of where they usually live, so they can only live in parts of their historic range. Some of those cephalopods just move to where they're more comfortable. Some can't.

Anthony Burrill Brief
Tumblr media
At random, we were given an image from Anthony Burrill's archive of works. I was given an image of a pairs of glasses with the text 'TESTS'. Our instructions were to re-imagine the image in regards to the word 'Anthropocene'.
Tumblr media
Anthopocene is defined as a period of time during which human have had a substantial impact in our planet. I first needed to research and brainstorm the word and my image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From my research, I created 8 thumbnails sketches, manipulating the image in relation to 'Anthropocene'.
Tumblr media
One needed to be chosen for a final piece and I chose the image of a bike. I chose to represent 'Anthropocene' in a positive light, celebrating a solution to a modern issue we face of car pollution. 2 drafts of my final piece were then made, ready to create digitally.

Shakespeare was the great poet of disrupted weather. There is the unusually hot day in Romeo and Juliet when the fight breaks out between Romeo and Tybalt; there are the disrupted seasons and rotten harvests of A Midsummer Night’s Dream...

This survey in Soavina, near Antananarivo, digitally documents the terrain geometry with laser scanning technology. Flood gates control the waterflow of a drainage canal that crosses from the Siasony river system over to the Ikopa river system where it is released.

Get to Know Me - A Tag Game
thank u for the tag, @aureutr 😊 EDIT also @ace-din-djarin!!!!!
rules: tag a few people you want to know better; make a new post, don't reblog!
favorite color: red! ❤️
currently reading: listening to ‘The Anthopocene Reviewed’ by john green, most recently over my lunch break when I lay down in my room and dozed lol.
last song: ”The Longest River” by Anciients, played ambiently in the background by my spouse. (I am not one to put on music for myself much, I get exposed to so many excellent curated lists via him lol)
last movie: hmmm. uh. It can’t be Last Night in Soho... I watched that months ago... hmm...
last series: Either “The Legend of Vox Machina” (such a wild and delightful experience as a Critter!) or Season 2 of Channel Zero -- No End House on Shudder (still part way through that one!)
sweet, spicy, or savory: savoury every day of the week baby but also fuck me up with spicy while ur at it
coffee or tea: coffee, daily. my partner owns like 9 brew methods and I know how to use exactly one (1), the clever dripper, so I use that.
three ships: ooh! - Din/Luke (Star Wars, currently working on the second in a series for this ship, the sequel to through power, there is victory on AO3)
- Percy/Vex’ahlia (The Legend of Vox Machina/Critical Role, my little shipper heart has been so overjoyed to see them most recently in animation, the sheer delight of visual animated media!!) and,
- ... hoo boy this is hard. I have been reading a LOT of Obi-Wan Kenobi fic for these last many months, but I am very (EXTREMELY) fluid with those I ship him with. True fandom bicycle for me for sure. Gun to my head though, glitterglanger got me fucking good with Transactional States so for the ‘what if?’ factor alone, I may have to say Jango Fett/Obi-Wan Kenobi lol.
first ever ship: hmm. Ron/Hermione, perhaps? as in, my first online fandom shipping experience.
currently working on: “only as strong as the warrior next to you”, i.e. DarkLuke fic part 2, currently at 60k. I’m midway through the third act, and have never written this much without sharing something before. it’s KILLING ME lol but honestly also it probably a good learning experience. most recently, scenes I’ve been drafting have been focused on politics, art, and Empire within the Galaxy.
favourite piece of clothing: asked my partner (mr d) and he said ‘cardigans’ lmao. (”that’s not a piece of clothing, that’s a genre of clothing” I said. “pffft” he responded.) BUT -- my response is: 1. for pure value over time, my red button-up coat, and 2. my moose housecoat for comfort-bumming around lmao
comfort food: Poutine tbh, all kinds, for pure comfort value. If we’re talking specifically hungover comfort food, switch it up to Subway Chicken and Bacon Ranch sandwich lmfao.
favourite time of the year: autumn/fall!! fuckin LOVE me that autumnal bullshit like the basic bitch I am
fav fanfiction: EVER? 😱 If we’re talking pure compounded comfort and joy over time, The Student Prince (Merlin/Arthur AU) by FayJay is RIGHT up there honestly. Specifically, on audiobook -- dear god I’ve listened to that so many times and still the story of the relationship is so solid and the writing so enjoyable. Perhaps next up for sheer impact and notability is my dear friend (years after I read this series omg I was so starstruck to be friends with her) is the icarus verse by green_postit (Star Trek, Mirrorverse Kirk/Bones), ft. some of the best fucking titles in the history of fanfic IMO. (icarus in retrospect, the pugilists, skeleton men. FORMATIVE for me as a writer tbh.)
honestly, wrapping it up I’m also a fan of my own fic “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To” (Steve/Bucky, Steve/Peggy, Wartime) from back in 2014 if I’m honest. I really felt so sated and satisfied when I wrote that fic and shared it, because I wanted so badly to read it I brought it into existence. :) so that brings me a lot of long-term joy, also.
... wait fuck I wanted to keep this to three but peradii’s “wonderterror” (Star Wars, no ship) is world-endlingly good, ft. Eldritch Luke and Leia, so. gotta sneak that one on too I guess!!!

Raven represents multiple knowledges, both practical and conceptual, and we argue that his intersubjective manipulations of earth systems and species reveal the integrity, balance, exigencies, and contingencies of life on earth. Indeed, we propose that Raven, through his knowledge and encounters, often exhibits what Scott (1998: 6) has termed mētis: "the indispensable role of practical knowledge, informal processes, and improvisation in the face of unpredictability" (Scott 1998: 6). Raven is a master of this mode, even if his novel experiments and improvisations do not always produce their intended ends. Raven's other crucial modality is as a mutable transcender of conventional boundaries. He marries other species, becomes their offspring, and otherwise pushes beyond the conventional limits of intersubjectivity and interanimation, such that nothing is beyond his manipulations. In this respect Raven in the "Ravencene" anticipates humanity in the Anthopocene, both as an agent (or "driver") of change through his appetites and aspirations to control things for his own purposes, and as a resilient respondent to change (through coping, mitigation, adaptation, etc.) when earth systems and their constituent elements prove too powerful, dynamic, and complex to be harnessed for the benefit of one being or species.

so i was having a conversation with a lady today which was born out of having to label a geological time in which humans started to have an irreversible effect on earth (called the anthropocene). we ended up talking about how the uni has a dedicated queer space which i had just discovered, and she, being a white lesbian in her 50s, expressed her opinion against labels... She told me she thinks white males in university spaces are the most disadvantaged because they don’t have dedicated spaces for them like women do, or like aboriginal people do, or like queer people do etc. her opinion is that lgbt(qia+) people shouldn’t attach themselves to labels because we’re all just people living on earth and it doesn’t matter that she happens to be in love with a woman. and whilst i agree that we should be able to just exist and have no differences and no judgement on whether you love someone or don’t, or whether they’re white or black or genderless etc. the fact of the matter is that there are these power structures in place and that labels, in my opinion, help powerless people give meaning and reality to their existence.
Honestly i’ve only ever heard these against-labels arguments from old people (and men) and i think it might be something to do with the complexities and varieties of labels in the queer community that it gets ‘too confusing’ for them to remember/understand. i had another older woman tell me that transgender people shouldn’t go to such painful, mentally damaging and expensive lengths to alter their physical body in order to present themselves in the gender they wish to be, and instead should change their personality, or rather, societies should change their perspectives on what is deemed a feminine/masculine personality. she said that people should be allowed to have personalities regardless of their gender, be interested in aspects of life regardless of whether eg. being into cars is mostly a masculine interest or being into makeup is mostly a feminine interest.
and i’m just like... yeah, that’s like, end game, but we’re so far from all of that! and to pretend that we’re already in that space is to deny the aggressions and micro-aggressions minorities face on a daily basis because of the implicit power structures in place. that’s why we, and young people especially, need labels to raise awareness of who we are and our right to be accepted as who we are in our world. yeah there’s a lot of different ways to identify yourself but they speak to the complexities and nuances of human existence. if you don’t agree don’t deride someone who uses specific identifiers if that helps them through life, and try to understand why they need those labels by listening to what they have to say.
i was too tired to explain to this lady why white males are not disadvantaged at (uni unless they’re queer) but this conversation literally came straight after a tutorial on power structures in spaces around us and privilege and i’m like.. did you actually switch your brain off that whole time, i did not want to repeat myself twice.
