I’ve been noticing streets, parks & buildings all over Europe that are named, in full, after historical figures from the area. In the interests of storytelling & extracting the values held dear to Berlin’s inhabitants & legislators (or city planners ? Idk who gets to name streets), I began documenting each sign & seeking out the story behind the name, attempting to connect the dots & read into Berlin’s cultural identity from the stories it draws its names from.

Sadly, however, I only had this idea on our last day in Berlin & could barely find a name thereafter, save Rosa-Luxembourg-Platz, a square in Mitte named for Socialist thinker & organiser Rosa Luxembourg, executed by Social Democrats in Berlin in 1919. Max-Beer-Straße draws its name from a foundational writer on imperialism’s role in Capitalism, also a Berliner & also seemingly a figure of similar martyrdom, as he was exiled to London under Nazism began to rise in power & influence. Finally, we have poet Anna Louisa Karsch, an autodidact poet of 18th Century Berlin, whose poetry lampooned warring governments & spoke of her struggles with poverty. She wasn’t quite a communist thinker, as the last 2 were, but a historically pertinent voice of class dissent, nevertheless & we see her honoured, like the others, by what was once East Berlin, as fundamental in raising public pride & attention to the city’s history of class struggle.
