If a Gilligan's Island movie was made in the 90s, I pick Matthew Lillard as Gilligan, John Goodman as Captain Jonas "The Skipper" Grumby, Tim Matheson as Thurston Howell III, Cheryl Ladd as Eunice "Lovey" Howell, Famke Janssen as Ginger Grant, Jason Priestley as Professor Roy Hinkley and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Mary Ann Summers.

Scream of the Wolf (1974)
My rating: 5/10
Some high grade 70s cheese, with the wacka chicka and the Peter Graves and all, but it's very obvious who the killer is very early on (to the point where characters in the movie point it out), and I felt a bit let down to find out he isn't actually a werewolf, just an asshole with a big dog and a bunch of proto-incel rhetoric.

Tag 9 people to get to know better or catch up with
Thanks for tagging me, @littleblackraincloudofcourse !❤️
Three ships you like - Just off the top of my head, Buddie (Buck x Eddie from 9-1-1), Marvey (Mike x Harvey from Suits) and Chenford (Lucy Chen x Tim Bradford from The Rookie). I have so many more, lol.
First ship ever - These are all from roughly the same time, and I was only a kid at the time, so I’m not sure which came first, but I’d say Maddie Hayes x David Addison from Moonlighting, Jim Dempsey x Harriet ‘Harry’ Makepeace from Dempsey & Makepeace, and Anne Shirley x Gilbert Blythe from the 1985 made-for-television adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and its 1987 sequel. In my teenage years, I seriously shipped Benton Fraser x Ray Vecchio from Due South.
Last song you heard - I stopped at the Tesco Express on my way home from work earlier to see if they had anything I fancied for dinner (spoiler alert - they didn’t) and You Can Get It If You Really Want came on over the sound system, much to the seeming delight of everyone in the store because we all started humming, whistling and, in the case of one customer, even singing along. Oh, and it was the Jimmy Cliff version, not the Desmond Dekker one, or at least it sounded like it.
Favourite childhood book - Ooh, that’s a difficult one! I devoured books as a child (a habit I’ve been getting back into this year and last) and I don’t know if I could pick just one.
Currently reading - The Binding Room by Nadine Matheson (the sequel to The Jigsaw Man, which I just finished earlier this week), and I’m also making my way through a book of short stories called That Was A Shiver, and Other Stories by James Kelman.
Currently watching - I finally got around to watching the last half of the last season of The Blacklist this week, watching the very last episode just last night. I’m also watching reruns of The Closer and the original The Twilight Zone, as well the current seasons of Death in Paradise, Murdoch Mysteries, N.C.I.S. and Law & Order. I’m also watching Tatort Saarbrücken, but I’m trying to make the episodes last because there’s only five of them and the next one doesn’t air until January! I have a whole stack of other stuff I still have to get around to as well, but there’s only so many hours in the day.
Currently consuming - A tin of Pepsi Max.
Currently craving - Ice cream, even though it’s really cold here at the moment.
I tag @imwritesometimes @slow-burn-sally @firemedicdiaz @tulipfromtheinternet @fireladybuckley @smowkie @all-or-nothing-baby @mistmarauder @katries and anyone else who wants to play. No pressure on anyone who doesn’t!😘

Mostly FREE Vampire Books
I am not as well-read with vampires, but I'm making up for lost time. Here are the vampire books I have read and my take on them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this, Carmilla, Dracula, For the Blood is the LIfe, Already Dead, I am Legned, and the first three novels of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. For all books, I will try to include a link to either a free version or to a borrowable version from the internet archive. You can make an account and check out the books legally.
Carmilla by LeFanu, Joseph Sheridan
The classic. The one, the only. It's a short read, which is disappointing. However, the ending is very gory with a scene that would have looked amazing in a modern movie. If you want a steamy reading of the novel on audio book, Audible has THIS beauty with a full cast and some heavy breathing. However, this audiobook version is provided free by the internet archive.
Dracula by Bram Stoker
I love this book. I did Dracula Daily this year, and I'll probably do it again next year. I'm going to listen to the audiobook of it for funsies. The beginning is, i think, the best part. The ending was disappointing, but the novel is still very exciting and scary.
For the Blood is the Life By F. Marion Crawford
I feel like this short story is actually a better example of a "modern" vampire story. I've read a lot of older vampire stories, and they all are a little too steeped in old lore to be really satisfying as a modern reader. However, this one has everything. A really creepy beginning. An exciting story. A romantic vampire seduction leads to potential death. The vampire is a woman and justified, so in a modern retelling, I think she would be the hero.
I am Legend by Richard Matheson
I read this on audiobook at 2x speed, because the POV character is kind of a jerk. An interesting look at trying to explain vampirism from a scientific perspective. It does not have the same ending as the movie by the same name. Misogyny abounds. But a woman ends up winning in the end so... maybe? I will admit, I'm still not sure how I feel about this one. On the one hand, it was engaging. I enjoyed the author trying to explain away the lore from a logical perspective.
Interview with a Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and Queen of the Damed
Interview with a Vampire was a fine book. I read it at the same time I was reading Dracula for the first time, and there were definitely moments where Dracula outshined it, but then others where Interview was obviously more interesting because it was more modern. The movie is more engaging and a shorter investment of time. However, Armond is different in this one, so you kind of have to read it to get the next book (OR, watch the movie and read the Wikipedia summary of the book to get the differences). Vampire Lestat is a really good book for the most part. It lags after the middle but picks back up for the ending. I could have read more about Lestat's early days, and I could care less about all the exposition. Queen of the Damned was not a fun read. I can not stress this enough. It was mostly boring. I only read it because I've been told you have to read it to enjoy the rest of the series, which gets better. Lots of exposition. Any chapter in Letsat's POV is great. Everything else is not very exciting. Overall, I don't like Anne Rice. I HATE that her vampires communicate telepathically. It's cool and all, but it makes for very boring reading. Entire chapters where the characters are standing still in a room, not saying anything, not doing anything, while one of them "talks" to the other about the past with their mind. There was real potential here to "show" us what was happening, but oh no. It's all done through exposition. It was really innovative for its time, but because so much of her lore has been incorporated into modern vampire stuff, it doesn't feel fresh anymore. Especially when we get to Queen of the Damned, Anne feels very pretentious in her writing. She includes poems from her husband that I don't feel like add anything to the text, and in fact take you right out of it because you're reminded that she's literally including her husband's poetry. ALL THAT SAID, the books provide that FEELING of wanting to read vampire fiction. They're very atmospheric, so I will continue to read them and enjoy them for that aspect.
Already Dead by Charlie Hudson
The only non-free one on the list. I included it, because I read it. Main character is a vampire detective, but he doesn't have fangs. I think vampirism is a stand-in for AIDS, but that's a guess. An interesting concept and I did sort of enjoy the read, but it lacks (for me) the classic vampire lore to make it really fun.
That's all for now. More later as I can pull them to gether.
@rinniiart, I hope this wasn't too much. I wanted to take some time and find free versions of things as I went so you and others wouldn't have to shell over a lot of money.

Favorite books?
Hmmm… that’s tough, I love a lot of books. I’m an old lady, I prefer classic literature, or historical fiction… horror fiction…. I guess if I had to narrow it down I would say:
--“Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. Probably my all time favorite. I really resonated with the “savage” in this novel. Now more than ever…
--“Interview with the Vampire” by Anne Rice, actually pretty much all the vampire chronicles. The vampire Lestat, queen of the damned, blood and gold, the vampire Armand, pandora… tale of the body thief…
—“Frankenstein: the modern Prometheus” by Mary Shelley, I just think it’s a powerful piece of literature. Beautifully written.
—“Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë, the darkest love story of all time.
—“A Spy in the house of love” by Anais Nin, I love most of Anais’ work, her diaries… delta Venus…
—“The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, i know it seems pretentious and cliché—but I love virtually everything he writes. Always wished my birthday was the 24th instead of the 23rd so I could share it with him and Jim Henson😭. “The beautiful and the damned” “flappers and philosophers”… “this side of paradise”… all good.
—“Save me the Waltz” by Zelda Fitzgerald. I always thought her life was very tragic, and since she inspired so much of Scott’s work—naturally I found her a source of fascination as well.
—“the turn of the screw” by Henry James
— “the stranger” by Albert Camus
—“the bell jar” by Sylvia Plath with always hold a special place in my teenage heart.
—“the catcher in the Rye” by J.D Salinger. I love most of his stuff as well, I really feel Holden Caulfield. He knows what’s up.
—“Madame Bovary” by Gustave Flaubert
—“the Venus in Furs” by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch
—“I Capture The Castle” by Dodie Smith (1948)
—“Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte (1847)
—“Dracula” by Bram Stoker (1897) classic! Read it so many times.
Harry Potter and lord of the rings I’ve read countless times.
-Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (1860), I gotta admit… I love me some Charles Dickens. This one is particularly special.
—Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (1961)
I always loved treasure island, and the Swiss family Robinson when I was a kid.
Lord of the flies has always stuck with me.
—“Slaughterhouse 5” by Kurt Vonnegut
I liked the lovely bones… flowers in the attic… I enjoyed chuck palahniuk back in the day.
Oh! I love “The Giver” by Lois Lowry.
A clockwork orange…
I love Stephen King. Pet Semetary is my favorite though.
I love “tuck everlasting” and “bridge to teribithia”.
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (1938) is an all time fav. Love the Alfred Hitchcock movie as well.
Silence of the lambs…American psycho…. Hell House by Richard Matheson (1971),
Coraline by Neil Gaiman (2002), can I just say—Neil Gaiman must be the most prolific writer of modern times. I love so much of his stuff. I met him once in person, he’s a sweet man.
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde—one of the best pieces of fiction ever written. I also love how cheeky Oscar Wilde was in general. Also a libra (my team!).
“The Yellow Wallpaper”, Short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Brilliant feminist piece of literature/social commentary on feminine “hysteria”.
“Go Ask Alice” by Beatrice Sparks.
“I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” by Joanne Greenberg
“Girl interrupted” Susanna Kaysen
“Fear and loathing in Las Vegas”, Hunter S. Thompson. I love reading his stuff, he cracks me up.
Too many to name, but there ya go!

April 2024
The April meeting of the Club started on a sombre note with a tribute to Club member – Steve Bremner – who had sadly passed away on 20 March 2024. Steve was an excellent guitarist who belonged to Wick in Caithness but had lived on Skye for almost 60 years. Steve had played with many bands over the years and latterly with Calum MacAskill at the Club here in Portree. A large turnout of family and friends attended the funeral service in Portree Church of Scotland on Wednesday, 3rd April, which culminated with Calum MacAskill and Carina Campbell playing the beautiful tune “The Gift of Time” composed by the late Jim MacKay. The sympathy of everyone connected with the Club is extended to Steve's daughter, Linda, son, Stephen and other members of the family.
To start the musical proceedings Fox Brendon took to the stage and played a lovely selection on the Scottish Small Pipes followed by his 7 year old son, Kiro, on the fiddle, playing the “Bonnie Lass O' Fyvie” and “Uist Tramping Song”. Next to perform was Kiro's big sister, Leela, on fiddle with “Flatwater Fran” and “Walking on the Moon”. Kiro was then quickly up and played a couple of tunes on his Dad's Small Pipes to great acclaim from the large audience.
A regular visitor to the Club, Dennis Hurst from Munlochy, then produced his two row button box and gave the audience a great selection of Scottish tunes which had the feet tapping finishing up with “Bonnie Naver Bay”.
It was then the turn of Club Chair Julia to pick up her fiddle to play “Shetland Shells” followed by “Farquhar and Hetties's Waltz” and “Waltz for Kylin” before finishing up with “Neil Gow's Lament for his second Wife”.
Accordionist Emily Matheson from Staffin then made a welcome return featuring the beautiful waltz “Margaret Ann Robertson” followed by lively sets of jigs and marches which brought us up to guest artist time.
A truly family band from Inverness, the Colin Donaldson Trio, featuring Colin on accordion, his wife Heather on drums and their 14 year son on piano were warmly welcomed on stage as they played a great set of jigs. This was followed by some fine marches, French tunes, waltzes, an Irish twostep and the set of reels - “Polharrow Burn”, “Rakes of Malow”, “Sword of St Columba” and
“Archie Menzies” - finishing the first half with some jigs.
After the usual short break for tea and sandwiches and a 'comfort stop' Dennis got the second half under way with some cracking tunes getting the audience clapping and singing along. The applause continued as Emily returned to the stage to entertain us with “Redwing”, “All the way to Galway” and two beautiful Runrig tunes. Haste ye back, Emily!
The raffle was then drawn and Julia welcomed the guest band back on stage and they started with a lively set of Irish Jigs followed by the lovely Jazz feature - “Autumn Leaves”. They continued with
a selection of marches, a quickstep from Jungle Book - “I Wanna Be Like You” and “The Bare Necessities” and the waltzes “Sandy and Helen Gardiner's Golden Wedding Waltz”, “Della's Waltz” and “Anne Muir's Waltz”. A popular set of Scottish tunes had everyone singing along before they rounded off the evening in fine style with another grand set of jigs. An excellent mixture of music from three great musicians with special credit to the talented young pianist, Fraser.
The next Club night – the final event 0f this season – will be held in the Royal Hotel, Portree, on Thursday, 2nd May 2024 with the guest band still to be confirmed.
