headcanon | erwin smith & his perception of levi ackerman

table of contents: levi is (i) excitement (ii) gamble (iii) dirt (iv) caricatures (v) apologies (vi) the thing with warfare (vii) constance (viii) warmth (ix) detail (x) in this life.

i. smith flirts with information, & then he flattens it. he knows to much about lovof, & he knows exactly what he intends to know.

smith dances somewhere in early twenties when in lovof wants his death. the funny thing is that lovok isn’t the first. that’s why had lovof had been more extravagant in his hiring processes.

when he hires for his death, smith knows. he’s got a friend inside who tells him the price that lovof paid for his head. the same friend tells him that lovof paid someone well, someone who kill him on smith’s ground — with the mobility of the scouts & with the equipment of the scouts. the name his friend gives him is one that he has already heard.

smith fixates.

he fixates amit a lot & mostly fixates on the rumors that he gathers —- the one hired against him has a name for himself, he hears. he uses stolen gear well. he’s stronger than he should be.

at this point, smith has been in mitras for a week. he keeps his head hooded & spends a couple nights walking along the streets of the underground. he picks up murmurs & assembles what he knows until he’s ready for the time of arrest.

he smiles when it’s time.

because it’s a nice gamble & someone wants him dead enough that they hired someone highly skilled.

because levi of the underground is flashy & waiting to laugh at the corps.

mike shoves levi’s face sewage water, & erwin kneels.

he feels a bit giddy at the hatred ( at the power ) that he sees, & he feels like he’s made quite the find.

ii. the gamble continues. levi is rawer grief than esmih has ever shown —- there’s a moment when the palm of his hand drips blood, when smith is subjugated enough to stares at the grooves of fooprints of in the mud, of battle written in the mud —

& it occurs to him that levi may be the arbiter of a gamble that he’s still making. but the stakes were high that day anyway. it was the first time that erwin smith’s formation had been executed on the field, & it was the first time that mass deaths would be filed under his name.

it feels like an awakening when levi presses his blade against his neck. many people had previously damned or praised his ruthlessness. but when there’s steel pressed against his neck, when the steel is forcibly pulled away —

levi had seen something .

it’s a gamble what he had seen.

iii. shadis sometimes hates smith. they’re polite with one another, & they spend far too much time together sometimes shadis approaches him with something akin to relief sometimes, his distaste is vile. smith wonders if it’s because of their unspoken dispute for power or if because shadis knows some of the things that smith does discretely. the moral ambiguities that smith opts into with some sort of machiavellian logic —

he dances somewhere in his early twenties when lovof wants his death. there are quite few that want him dead after that & it’s a nuisance more than anything. death is not yet at the top of his list of priorities, he’s conjuring change & architecting a system that might benefit someone.

at some point, smith jokes that he’s never been as flattered by a hit as he was by the hiring of levi. it’s not a particularly funny joke, but the fact is that

the name of erwin smith is sometimes associated with ideals & humanity & things that shadis has never managed to be. sometimes it’s associated with something sordid.

it’s a type of honesty that says growing trust when smith understands that levi has heard both reputations.

it’s interesting to see how levi understands dirt.

iv. sometimes erwin is guilty of thinking of levi the way that he frames him publicly — a caricature of who he is, but a promise of humanity’s strength & hope.

he swallows it as a misdeed, & it doesn’t overwhelm him. he’s well accustomed to garbing his speech in lies, but only when of strategic use.

when honesty is the good choice, it comes as a bit of relief. so levi knows the caricatures, & he also knows what smith also admits —

it’s easy to admit that he thinks of levi highly, that he knows the limitations, that he had blown the caricatures up for public conversation.

so even if smith is guilty of thinking a little too romantically levi’s strength & capability, he’s aware of everything.

he knows quite a bit of levi.

v. smith owes levi too many apologies. there are plenty that he will never give — smith cannot will not cannot will not apologize for the deaths that he orchestrates. he does not ask forgiveness on things he does intentionally.

smith recognizes that he has a pattern of dehumanizing levi through caricaturization & through politics. he has a pattern of damning levi sometimes, of making him watch when smith loses his arm & loses parts of his conviction.

so the apologies come for smaller things instead. they are acknowledgements of the performances that he asks levi to make — violent ones, romantic ones, political ones that require parading, charades, fundraising, and efforts for morale.

all of these performances are things that smith is willing to do. however, these performances that don’t always match what his own own obligations.

note: so many times, smith has asked that his soldiers dedicate their hearts. he has done the same. he separates himself by surrendering his soul as well. it’s something ugly, & it means that warfare sours how smith considers levi most hours of the day.

the ugly is inevitable.

vi. the thing with warfare is that survival punches deep. smith survives, & levi survives. there is more to life than warfare.

vii. company gives comfort. life gives comfort. smith first knows levi as a constant presence in group nights claimed by survivors. there are shared late nights, among those they call the veterans. with a toast to dead life, the veterans sometimes linger in the mess hall together. they chatter about nothing or nothing chatters for them. levi is something of a fascination to smith. he’s something reliable. he’s something compelling, & smith always feels his gaze drawn to him. there’s a fire in the mess hall, & the air feels warm.

when smith becomes commander, he starts leaving the group nights earlier. levi leaves at the same time he does. when they leave, it feels as though they breathe at the time. in the winter, smith feels justified in the feeling— their breaths puff out fog at the same times.

levi’s constance evolves beyond group nights. they sit together in smith’s office. there’s a fire there, too, & levi brews his tea. his presence still feels warm & still feels compelling.

overall, levi is a person steady enough that it makes it easier for smith to be who he needs to be.

for that he’s grateful.

viii. there’s one night ( then there’s more ) that there’s something about levi’s profile in the late night ( in fire light ) that sticks with smith. he doesn’t think it stands out in the moment, but he remembers it later suddenly as something unsurprising, as something specific when he fists a hand around himself. it’s laundry day.

erwin thinks he outgrew his youth years ago, but levi is a warmth in company & warmth of feeling.

it feels like a transgression. if something happens, then it is a transgression.

smith can handle transgressions. it’s been a long time since he worried about sin ( it’s something he surrendered to ) but the moments of indulgence that levi grants him feels like transgression.

sometimes it makes him want a cigarette.

sometimes it makes him think he’s burning brighter. he laughs when he thinks that.

for that he’s grateful.

ix. there are the details that smith starts to remember with familiarity like muscle memory — he recognizes levi’s handwriting easily, the slant when he signs his name. unfortunately, he starts to recognize the angle in levi’s brow before he makes a crass joke or observation. he learns how to brew tea in a way that is better than he did before —- because there is a ceremony to well-made tea, because it makes the tension in levi’s hands loosen if it’s brewed well. he learns the length of his gait, & he often lets levi outpace him by milliseconds because

smith may be the commander, but levi can be in the lead.

levi is someone whose birthday he remembers, whose birthday he pretends he can’t remember, whose birthday he caters to with discretion.

levi is the detail that make it easy to breath praise.

levi is the detail that makes easy annoyance permissible.

levi is the detail that fires petty competition.

levil is the detail that helps him shave cleanly for the first time after his dexterity changes.

levi is the detail that could be humanity.

for this, smith is grateful.

x. levi threatens to break his legs, & smith laughs. then smith dies, & levi does not laugh. smith supposes that he owes levi another apology, but

in this life, levi is a cruel decision because smith would make the same decision again. & again. & again.

at least in this life.

levi is the detail that changed the game.

Santosh Mitra Square, located in the center of the city of Kolkata, is a place where customs, creativity, and enthusiasm all coexist peacefully. The US is ready to assist if India asks for help in handling the violence in Manipur

U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti on Thursday said that the violence and killing in Manipur is a grave concern for humankind and that if asked, the US government is ready to assist India with the situation.

Mr. Garcetti was speaking at a conference where he talked about the multi-religious nature of Kolkata and added that the US has plans to invest more in the eastern and northeastern parts of India.

“Let me speak about Manipur first. We pray for peace there. When you ask us about the concern of the United States, I don’t think it’s a strategic concern. I think it’s about human concern... You don’t have to be Indian to care when you see children and individuals die in the sort of violence that we see [in Manipur] and we know that peace is the precedent for so many other good things. There have been so many good things in the northeast and the east here and those can’t continue without peace,” said Mr. Garcetti when asked about the US establishment’s views on the ongoing violence in Manipur.

“We stand ready to assist in any way if asked. We know it’s an Indian matter and we pray for peace and that it may come quickly. Because we can bring more collaboration, more projects, more investment if that peace is in place,” he added.

“One very clear message I want to send — the east of India and the northeast of India matters to the United States. Its people, its places, its potential, and its future matter to us,” he said.

As he visited Kolkata, Mr. Garcetti met West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose and Principal Chief Adviser to Chief Minister Amit Mitra.
