With my ADHD, I find myself wearing headphones more often than not while at work. Sometimes I need to really focus on a particular task and other times I just get overwhelmed by the typical background noises that come with an open office floor plan. Typically I’ll listen to podcasts, but then I feel my attention is split between the two and I’m rewinding to catch what I may have missed when I zoned out. I recently found this awesome 1 hour ambient “podcast” on Spotify titled A Night Aboard and Aircraft Carrier that has solved all of my problems.

Unfortunately, it’s not directly taken from an aircraft carrier, though if it was I’m sure it would be insanely loud. The white noise landscape is close enough in that it’s simplified to match the aesthetic and crafted to where it’s not overwhelming to listen to, but just interesting enough that I’ve got it on replay several times throughout my day. It’s especially nice because I can still hear if someone in my vicinity is talking to me, but loud enough to drown out general chatter and typing.

After a long day of work, you finally get the chance to crawl into your rack and listen to the hum and liveliness of the ship which is your home. Aircraft on the Flight Deck come and go amongst the constant, steady hum of the engines doing their jobs continuing to push you along on your way. And as you allow your surroundings to all fade into a comforting melody, you soon find yourself drifting away, ready for whatever tomorrow may bring.

The composition was written and performed using two classic combo organs and a vintage piano bass. The analog effects chain, recording console and tape are an integral part of the performance along with musical instruments, which creates volume and additional layers from a minimalist sound. At times, there is a feeling of the presence of wind and string instruments, and recording artifacts create a semblance of percussion.
