Amanda Gorman is a poet and activist named the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States in 2017. She previously served as the youth poet laureate of Los Angeles, and she is the founder and Executive Director of One Pen One Page — a non-profit that provides free creative writing programs for underserved youth.

#Book 1 in the #23booksin2023 #challenge #CallUsWhatWeCarry by @amandascgorman I #read more than half of it on the plane during my day trip to Vegas for Afta Shock last month but did not get to read the rest til the new year. You can’t really speed read a book of #poems & really get substantive value out of it. Lots to mull over for sure. I generally prefer to read memoirs & comedic mysteries to escape, but I enjoyed this book. It will be passed on to my goddaughter who loved the children’s book version of #TheHillWeClimb that I gifted her last year. El año pasado, mi amigo Juan Milà, director editorial de #HarperVia, me llamó para preguntarme si me interesaría traducir el discurso Yo tengo un sueño, de Dr. #MartinLutherKing, Jr. Lo primero que pensé fue que lo había escuchado mal. No podía creer que ese pilar monumental del movimiento de derechos civiles no existiera en formato de libro en español. Le dije que sí inmediatamente… ¡Y el libro ya está en mis manos! Ha sido un honor indescriptible llevar a mi lengua natal este discurso oportuno y atemporal. También tuve el privilegio de traducir un conmovedor prólogo, escrito para esta edición, por #AmandaGorman. Al traducir ambos textos, me beneficié de las maravillosas sugerencias de mi editora —y ahora amiga querida— Ariana Rosado Fernández, así como de mi querido Juan Milà. En el proceso, todo el tiempo tuve presente que esto era un discurso. Por tanto, el texto tenía que sonar bien. Más allá del contenido, tenía que comunicar la cadencia, la musicalidad y el ritmo de uno de los mejores oradores del idioma inglés. Así que recité cada oración y todo el discurso, en español, una y otra vez… Durante los primeros días —¿o acaso fueron semanas?—, todavía no me podía creer que iba a ser el vehículo a través del cual las palabras de Dr. King llegarían a una audiencia hispanohablante. Sin embargo, en lugar de intimidarme, esta responsabilidad me inspiró y me mantuvo (con)centrado y con los pies en la tierra. Desde el borrador final, ya he perdido la cuenta de la cantidad de veces que he leído mi traducción en voz alta. Y todavía la voz se me quiebra y el pulso se me acelera mientras leo. Esto es personal. Esto a mí me toca de cerca. Yo también tengo un sueño. Yo también comparto el sueño de Dr. King. Yo también me pregunto, con #LangstonHughes, ¿qué le pasa a un sueño diferido? Este sueño también es aplicable a mi patria.
