I feel like I Tumblr would enjoy Portbella, so here's her story.
So about two years ago my blue gourami, Blue, died of old age. I had him for about 5 years so I was understandably devastated and on the hunt for a new fish to add to the tank, which was a 30 gallon with two black kuhli loaches left in it. I purchased two more gouramis, Irie (orangy dwarf gourami) and Yolk (honey gourami?). Irie passed away, as chain pet store fish often do, but the tank looked pretty sad with just one visible fish, so I got Portabella, a golden gourami. A few weeks after I got Portabella, Yolk passed away for seemingly no reason. I had noticed her chasing him sometimes but didn't think she was stressing him out that much. After his death, though, I was suspicious and decided not to get any more fish.
Before I left for college I decided to try to combine my 10 gallon and 30 gallon to make maintenance easier for my mom while I was gone. I moved Patty, a large black skirt tetra, into the 30 gallon tank and Portabella immediately started harassing her. It was less than 5 minutes before I had to move to move her back to the 10 gallon. So alone Portabella stayed. One of the loaches, Flick, died of old age, but for the most part the tank stayed peaceful.
For a while I really resented Portabella. I was kind of rooting for her to just drop dead like fish do sometimes. But now I'm permanently disabled and looking at having to consolidate the two tanks when I move out, and I'm gonna miss her. She's sassy and grumpy and I like her a lot. My current plan is to list her on craigslist and have whoever adopts her send me a picture of their setup and bring water samples to make sure she's going to a good home, but it still makes me pretty sad. I wish I could keep her but one disabled person taking care of two tanks and cat is a lot, especially for my first place. I love my grumpy fish tho :(
