Robert Plant is Not Ready to Retire: “I’ve Got Something to Say.”
Tumblr media
Retirement isn’t on Robert Plant‘s radar. Along with revealing a North American tour with Alison Krauss during Summer 2024 and another series of UK headlining dates with his band Saving Grace, Plant said he still has more to do and hinted at the possibility of new solo music.

Since releasing “Raise the Roof,” his second collaborative album with Krauss, in 2021, along with his 11th solo album, “Carry Fire,” in 2017 Plant said he has been revisiting music he’s had archived away.

Along with his 2024 touring schedule and sifting through unreleased material, Plant, 75, said retirement isn’t an option for him.

“The camaraderie, the things that you share up there, and the frailties that you know you’re carrying with you quietly, the exposure of yourself to yourself, is something that I would hate to say goodbye to,” said Plant. “I can’t just sit back. Out there in the real world, people say to me, ‘What about the book?’ And I say, ‘Are you kidding? What? This is spectacular. Why think about it twice?’”
Plant added, “This is today. What happened in Schenectady in 1969 is another story. And for me, the continuum must keep going. Today, I was pulling all my lyric books out and going, ‘Gotta get the groove back. I’ve got something to say.’ So yeah, I’m going to keep going—as long as they’ve got effects machines that make me sound good [laughs]. Well, it worked for Elvis [Presley]. Listen to the compression on his voice on some of those big ballads in ’57.”
In October 2023, Plant performed three Led Zeppelin songs as a guest performer during a benefit concert at the Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire, England for The Cancer Platform, an initiative launched by the Cancer Awareness Trust.
Plant’s set included “Stairway to Heaven,” which he hadn’t performed in 16 years.
“It was cathartic,” said Plant about performing the 1971 Zeppelin classic. “People go, ‘Oh, that’s good. He never was going to do that.’ But I didn’t really do it. I just blurted it out, ’cause it’s such an important song to me for where I was at the time and where I was with Jimmy [Page] and with John [Paul Jones] and Bonzo.

"We have Donna Murphy as Dolly. We have Donna Murphy as Aurelia. What are we doing to get Donna Murphy in a Mame revival so she can hit the Jerry Herman trifecta? I need this woman back on a stage immediately and genuinely, I cannot tell you how much money I'd be realistically willing to shell out. And on a more personal note? What do I have to do to get Donna Murphy to look at me like she wants to devour me whole? The things I want to do to this woman... She has chemistry with every single person she crosses paths with. I need her carnally."

"Mary Beth Peil's hair deserves a Tony Award of its own. She started going grey almost twenty years ago and never looked back. A grey-haired octogenarian who's actively out here being hot and sexy and showing skin is quite possible one of the hottest things in the world. Let me reiterate: I want to fuck this old woman."

Ex-NIGHTWISH Members TARJA TURUNEN And MARKO HIETALA Announce September 2024 European Tour
Tumblr media
Following a triumphant series of performances in South America with several sold-out gigs where Marko Hietala joined Tarja Turunen as a special guest, the two former NIGHTWISH members are set to captivate European audiences with their enthralling collaboration.
The European trek, which will kick off in September in Germany, promises to be an unforgettable experience as these two familiar voices reunite on stage once again.
Tarja recently released her first greatest-hits album "Best Of Tarja - Living The Dream". Her live show will feature a selection of songs from her career, also found on "Best Of", including fan favorites and her own personal picks.
Adding to the excitement, Marko and Tarja recently collaborated on the duet single "Left On Mars", which received widespread acclaim.
Marko will perform his own songs with his band before joining Tarja on stage for a night that promises to be nothing short of memorable.
Expectations are high as the duo continues to delight fans with both old and new songs, building on the success of their South American tour.
Tarja and Marko's "Living The Dream Together Tour 2024" European dates:
Sep. 08 - DE Berlin - Huxleys Neue Welt Sep. 09 - DE Bremen - Aladin Music Hall Sep. 10 - DE Saarbrücken - Garage Sep. 12 - DE Leipzig - Hellraiser Sep. 13 - DE Hamburg - Grünspan Sep. 14 - DE Herford - Kulturwerk Sep. 16 - NL Groningen - De Oosterpoor Sep. 17 - NL Utrecht - Tivoli Vredenburg (Ronda) Sep. 18 - DE Bochum - Matrix Sep. 20 - DE Ulm - Roxy Sep. 21 - DE Obertraubling - Eventhall Airport Sep. 23 - DE Frankfurt - Batschkapp Sep. 24 - DE München - Backstage Sep. 25 - CH Pratteln - Z7
Earlier this month, Hietala was asked by El Planeta Del Rock if there is any chance of him and Turunen launching a new project together. He responded: "I won't close that option off. We haven't talked about it, putting up a group together or anything like that. But at the moment, it seems that we've got a different kind of connection than it was [in the] past. Because then the camps were really divided already when I stepped into [NIGHTWISH]. And it was hard to find the truth of things, because a lot of it was like a managerial turf war where we got told certain things by one side and told certain things by the other side and lots of confusion — blah, blah, blah — and in the end, yeah, what we already realized a few years back when we were all together there doing the Christmas shows in Finland that after all the hassle has died and the noise has died and everything, you still find out that you lost a friend. And that was the main [reason] why we are basically doing this together again."
In a recent interview with Thiago Rahal Mauro of Brazil's Metal Musikast, Tarja spoke about what it was like to team up with Marko to perform a cover of "The Phantom Of The Opera" during their special open-air concert in July 2023 at Z7 Summer Nights in Pratteln, Switzerland. Tarja and Marko both played individual sets at the event, with their rendition of the main theme from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical coming during Turunen's portion of the show.
"I got a call from a promoter to take part in one festival in Switzerland last year in a European summertime in July," Tarja said. "And then I got to know, when I had accepted to be the artist of the evening, then I saw that they had also invited Marko and Marko's band to perform in the same festival. So I thought, 'Hmm.' And I was actually sending a message that I wished to reach Marko, because I didn't have his contact any longer, to ask him to perform with me 'The Phantom Of The Opera' in my show. And he responded 'yes.' So, after 18 years [laughs], we were about to sing the song together. And it was super exciting. It was really beautiful. The people got very emotional about this.
"We had met already before — we had been singing on a few occasions in Finland a few years before — so we kind of cleaned the table on that occasion already," she explained. "So we were in good terms, so to say, but now singing 'The Phantom Of The Opera' together after all these years was amazing."
Tarja also elaborated on her friendship with Marko, saying: "It's a new relationship with him, because he's not the same person anymore than he was in the band. He has changed a lot, and many years have passed by. I've changed myself. Life has changed us. So it is a new relationship, let's say. And it had made me very happy to get to know him better after all these years."
Last November, Tarja admitted to Chaoszine that she was "nervous" before performing "The Phantom Of The Opera" with Marko at Z7 Summer Nights. "I believe that he was nervous as well to meet up with me, but we were both very excited to go back to the stage and to sing the song," she said. "We sang 'Phantom Of The Opera' in Switzerland for the first time. Then we went over to Finland to perform it again, did a show together there — he with his band and me with my own. Wow. It was pure emotion. I think it was really beautiful, but it made me kind of… I was, like, 'I'm in peace,' sort of. The feeling was great. I think it was even more for Marko, because I saw him standing there after my concert, when I finished my set, and he came like almost in tears, saying that this was important. We reconnected, and it's great."
Turunen was fired from NIGHTWISH at the end of the band's 2005 tour by being presented with an open letter which was published on the NIGHTWISH web site at the same time. In the letter, the other members of NIGHTWISH wrote: "To you, unfortunately, business, money, and things that have nothing to do with emotions have become much more important."
NIGHTWISH keyboardist and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen later called the decision to part ways with Turunen "the most difficult thing I ever had to do." For her part, Tarja said the way she was kicked out of the group proved that her former bandmates were not her friends. "Maybe one day I'll forgive, but I will never forget," she said.
In 2019, Turunen dismissed Internet chatter about her possible return to NIGHTWISH after her December 2017 onstage reunion with the band's then-bassist/vocalist Hietala during a "Raskasta Joulua" concert in Hämeenlinna, Finland.
"I know a lot of fans would love to see something happen, but it's a very long distance away," she told Kerrang! magazine. "Personally, I don't see anything happening with me and them, to be perfectly honest. Marko came a little later into the band; he wasn't there since the beginning. He was always a guy I was close to. Me and Tuomas Holopainen, however, haven't seen each other in a long time… but we have been in touch. It's not bad. The past is what it is; we can't change that. We can only change the future."
NIGHTWISH's authorized biography, "Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996-2006", was published in Finnish in 2006 and in English three years later.
Turunen's husband, Marcelo Cabuli, and his business partners later sued the parties behind the book for defamation. Named in the lawsuit were the publishing house Like Kustannus Oy and the author of the book, Marko "Mape" Ollila. Cabuli and his Brazilian business partners argued that the book includes false accusations and insinuations that have caused them suffering and financial problems.
The book blamed Cabuli for the events leading up to Turunen's dramatic expulsion from the band in late 2005.
In 2011, the Helsinki District Court dismissed Cabuli's lawsuit, ruling that the book — which criticized Cabuli on only a few of its 380 pages — did not detrimentally affect his work or reputation in South America. In addition, the court determined that Ollila did not maliciously portray Cabuli in a negative light.
Nearly two years ago, Tarja was asked in an interview with Top Link Music manager and concert promoter Paulo Baron and music critic Regis Tadeu if she would consider doing a tour with NIGHTWISH if all of her former bandmates apologized to her about how their split happened and invited her to share the stage with them again. She responded: "It is very, very hypothetical that all what you said will happen, first of all — it's very, very hypothetical.
"I'm living in a world, like we are all living in a world, that things happen without us noticing," she continued. "I mean, I can't really close any doors in that sense; I'm not that kind of person any longer. I learned so many things in this life already. I take them as they are.
"So I don't know. It would be very hypothetically possible," she added. "It would be unlikely to happen."
Hietala announced his departure from NIGHTWISH in January 2021, explaining in a statement that he hadn't "been able to feel validated by this life for a quite a few years now." He has since been replaced by session bassist Jukka Koskinen (WINTERSUN),who made his live debut with NIGHTWISH in May 2021 at the band's two interactive experiences.
In an August 2022 interview with Finland's Chaoszine, Hietala revealed that he went through a dark period in his life, which included depression, insomnia, anxiety and an eventual attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. Speaking about how he eventually came to the realization that exiting NIGHTWISH was the right thing to do, Marko said: "It was a long process. Of course, the COVID year that was there, where I had a lot of time for soul searching, it obviously gave me the last incentive that I need something else, that if I just continue with this I'm just gonna get sicker and sicker. But, of course, it's a process.
"I've been chronic depressive since 2010 [or] 2011, so I've been on a permanent medication ever since," he revealed. "Sometimes you get used to the meds [and] you will need more. We did raise [the dosage] during the years also, but it just didn't work. And now that I started to do… I had psychotherapy for over four years now, and then I also talked to psychiatrists and some doctors and did that also in Spain. Then my psychiatrist here in Finland said that I should do these ADHD neuropsychological tests, which I then did in Spain. And, okay, I got it."
Hietala reiterated that he "had been thinking about" leaving NIGHTWISH "for a while" before making the final decision. "Because I had a lot of weight. And I tend to… With the attention disorder, it tells me that when there are lots of trouble, then the disorder makes it into a real chaos," he explained. "There's a shitload of stuff coming and going and no peace anywhere. And for a year or two, I was already waking up every night at three o'clock to bad dreams and anxiety. So I'd say that the whole process probably started already with my former divorce [in 2016]. That was a very sad time when you think about your kids and your broken homes and all that. And then, when I started to get clear from that, then there were, well, all kinds of things. I don't really wanna go any deeper to what kind of things I'd gone through, but I'd gone through enough."
Acknowledging that making NIGHTWISH's latest studio album, 2020's "Human. :II: Nature.", was a "difficult" experience for him, Marko denied that his mental state at the time resulted in a diminished role for him on the final LP. "I think the original idea was to have that… we'll do a couple of [solo vocal appearances], or one solo for me and Troy [Donockley], and the rest Floor [Jansen], and then the harmonies; that was the idea originally for that," he said. "So I don't know if it affected. I think it was sort of as planned. But at that time I already had serious trouble with concentrating and serious trouble with a constant black cloud over my head."
In July 2022, Hietala told Finland's Iltalehti that he had not kept in touch with NIGHTWISH since his departure or followed the activities of his former band.
In May 2021, Holopainen said that Hietala's decision to leave NIGHTWISH "came as a bit of a surprise." He told Finland's Kaaos TV: "Marko informed us in December [of 2020 that he was leaving the band]. And even though he has been very open about his state and problems during the past years, it still came as a bit of a surprise for us. So it was a really tough pill to swallow. And for a few days, I was actually quite confident that there's no coming back, that this is it. I remember talking to Emppu [Vuorinen], the guitar player, and we were, like, 'You think this is it?' 'Yeah, I think this is it.' I mean, enough is enough. So much has happened in the past. Something that broke the camel's back, as they say. Then, after some time had passed — a few days — we started to think that it's been such a ride of 25 years, with so many ups also, that this is not the way to end it."
Tuomas elaborated on NIGHTWISH's reasons for carrying on, saying: "I think we still have something to give, and that's the main point. The music is still there. We felt that there's still so much music that needs to come out from this band that, 'Okay, let's give it one more shot.' And then finding the new bass player was really easy."
He added: "It's not like we do this just because we need to do it and there's nothing else to do. On a personal level, I feel that there's still so many stories and melodies that I want to share with the world with one lineup or another, so that's why you want to continue and keep on going.
"I've said this a million times, that a lineup change is the ultimate energy vampire, and that's how it really felt and still feels."
In June 2021, Jansen spoke about Hietala's exit from the band in an episode of her "Storytime" YouTube video series. She said: "That was a very sudden surprise that, of course, was not fun at all. But we understand — I understand — it was a necessary thing for him to do. And from there, we had to think of how to continue without him, and that also, in preparations towards the virtual show, that was a huge challenge."
In December 2020, Hietala was crowned the winner of the fall 2020 season of "Masked Singer Suomi" — the Finnish edition of the popular masked singing contest. He was disguised as Tohtori — the Doctor.

2016 VoicePlay summer fun — campers, cruises, costumes, charity, and… cops?
The excitement of the spring months rolled right into the summer. After he'd had a few weeks of concentrated new-dad time, the other guys gathered up Layne and headed to Ohio.
They first returned to Port Clinton for a show at the Lakeside Chautauqua Auditorium, and spent the night at a vintage (possibly haunted) hotel. From there, they scooted down to Dayton to be the featured artists at Camp A Cappella.

.
Ahoy, mateys
A week later, while the others took care of things at home, Geoff and Earl teamed up with three of their buddies from Echo — Erik Winger, Antonio Fernandez, and Deejay Young — for a quick cruise on the Royal Caribbean Allure to the Virgin Islands. During their time at sea, they crossed paths with Us the Duo, who had just finished opening for the North American and European legs of Pentatonix's world tour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
No rest for the ambitious
They arrived home to an exciting milestone: 100K likes on Facebook! In the meantime, Eli did some session recording work, while Layne and Tony prepped for their next PattyCake video, and Layne worked on an additional side project. (Paternity leave was supposed to be less busy, dude!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Runnin', runnin'
Once the guys were all together again, they got into production on projects for both PattyCake and VoicePlay for most of August. In between location shoots for "Will.of.Oz", they reunited with Emoni Wilkins to film their video for "I Love Me".

Cruisin'
At the end of the month, the guys grabbed Winger again, and boarded the Royal Caribbean Oasis for yet another voyage. Since they set sail on Geoff's birthday, they had a toast on board.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Almost as soon as they got home, they traded one guest for another, snagging Antonio for the middle leg of an eastbound Panama Canal trip on the Disney Wonder. (Though it seems that they were possibly getting weary from so much travel.) They also seem to have run afoul of the Mexican police on their way home, but I'm pretty sure the getting arrested part was just a joke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Hop, skip, and a jump
After a few days of rest, they embarked on a series of quick trips. First they flew up to New Hampshire for the UNH A Cappella Fest. Next came a show in Iowa, and then a charity fundraiser in Chicago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
All about those babes
During their next stint at home, they made time for a little hanging without working. Most of the guys let someone else do the singing for once when they attended a local Meghan Trainor concert. The group included Layne, Cyndi, and their older girls; Cyndi's sister Steph and her elder daughter; Earl and Nick; and Tony.
Meanwhile, Eli spent some time with his own family to celebrate his sister's birthday, and Geoff got his domesticity on at home with Kathy.
.
Back to woOOOork
As summer wound down, VoicePlay prepared for their favorite time of year by finally filming a music video for their arrangement of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" off of their 2012 album "Once Upon an Ever After".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
All eh-board
They closed out September with a cruise on the Disney Magic from Nova Scotia to NYC and back. Since Tony and Layne were deep in production for their next PattyCake project (and Layne understandably wanted some more time at home with the baby), the rest of the guys called on both Winger and Antonio to fill in again.

Bobby Carter is slowly changing the music industry, one genre-bending performance at a time. As the Senior Producer for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts, he’s brought on an increasingly-growing roster of emerging artists, big names, and icons to the company’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. to perform not only for the building’s employees, but for an audience of millions worldwide.
The St. Louis native’s journey has been long and arduous, but fulfilling, to say the least. “I’ve been at NPR for 23 years,” Carter tells ESSENCE. “But my route to where I am now was a bit unconventional; I started out as an intern in the summer of 2000. I was in the digital media space at the time, my job was to edit our content for the web stream. I spearheaded or managed our live streams – and this predated Tiny Desk.”
“I knew at some point I wanted to get involved with music at NPR, but that opportunity wasn’t there yet until NPR Music came along,” he continues. “I slowly started to drift over into the music space by writing pieces here and there, and contributing to our year-end content. In 2014, that’s when I produced my very first Tiny Desk concert, and three years later I was officially over with Tiny Desk in a formal role.”
Since his full transition to Tiny Desk in 2017, Carter has developed partnerships with Complexcon, and HBO’s Insecure, along with creating new initiatives to grow and diversify the program’s reach. He’s also known for further innovating the Tiny Desk Concert Series with artists such as Usher, H.E.R., Anderson.Paak, Jazmine Sullivan, Kirk Franklin, and more. The process of choosing musicians for the now-iconic performance platform has shifted from the time of its inception, but for Carter, he’s more hands on than ever.
“Well, early on it was a lot of us pursuing artists from our end and selling artists on what the concept is and getting them to come and play,” describes the Jackson State University graduate. “Fast-forward to now, it’s pretty much a two-way street. Tiny Desk, as you’re aware of, has become a phenomenon of sorts, where artists and labels know at this point that it’s a vehicle for promoting music and selling music.”
While many musicians feel that Tiny Desk is critical to promoting their music, Carter has found that the promotion of Black music has been equally as important. “I’m really passionate about helping to tell the story of Black music, because the story of Black music is the story of American music, if you ask me,” he says. With the month of June being Black Music Month, NPR has observed it by honoring Black music’s influence through various mediums, and highlighting its impact so that the story is told properly.
“You can’t tell the history of music without black people,” the veteran DJ says. “What we’re trying to do here at the Tiny Desk with Black Music Month is to really present that in a way that shows us in different lights. You have R&B, gospel, etc.; there’s just so many layers to black music that have made American music what it is today. It’s a story that isn’t told enough, it can never be told enough.”
Outside of jazz the only other true artform produced in the country is hip-hop, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. During his earlier days at the platform, Carter speaks about the “internal conflict” that he has dealt with to get people to recognize that hip-hop and artists like Gucci Mane also need to be heard in a space like NPR.
“I think that there is a struggle to be sure that every single perspective is heard, and understand that whether or not a they’re a street MC or a trap artist or a neo soul artist, that they all belong, their perspective deserves to be heard at the Tiny Desk, as long as the performance is right,” he says. There were people who were uncomfortable with a Gucci Mane at the Tiny Desk, given his history and whatnot. But he served his time for his wrongs, and he has been the ultimate redemption story.”
The Atlanta rapper’s appearance on Tiny Desk altered the trajectory of what the concert series was, helping to catapult it to the successful platform that it ultimately became. “I think that Gucci Mane, that Tiny Desk was a big, big game changer for the Tiny Desk in terms of hip hop, because it showed other artists in his lane that, ‘We can come and we can do our thing here too,’” Carter states, before pausing briefly.
He continues by saying, “There is an internal fight, because a lot of times people want to feel comfortable, they don’t want to feel threatened by hip hop. But if you’re a little uncomfortable, that’s okay – maybe it’s just not for you, but it is for somebody.” After Gucci’s performance in 2016, Tiny Desk featured Chance the Rapper, Big K.R.I.T., Rakim, Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion, and Trina, among others; bolstering the fact that the genre is still strong, and is here to stay.
Throughout the years, many legendary performances have taken place behind the desk of the All Songs Considered’s host Bob Boilen. Tiny Desk has risen to the heights of popularity, and is now a staple in today’s culture. Carter, who helped build it to what it is today, understands the task at hand, and knows how special this platform is. “I feel like it’s part of my duty to continue to do this,” he says. Not only continuing to push current stars and rising artists to the forefront, but also giving flowers to legends like El Debarge, Patti LaBelle, Charlie Wilson, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, and more.
“I think that it helps to bridge that gap and it helps to bring the youth over to these legendary legacy artists, and to remind them of their greatness,” Carter explains. “I think a lot of times  when I bring some of the artists that I bring to the Tiny Desk, this should serve as a reminder of their status in music.”
“So, I feel the ultimate responsibility, from a cultural standpoint, is to show people and use our huge audience to spread awareness about these artists,” he continues. “To grow and continue to be a voice for black culture, and for diversity as a whole.”

Bryon Hayes’ 2022: Bleak, Uncertain, Beautiful…
Tumblr media
Ayal Senior
It’s been a tumultuous year. Need I say more?
The best part of the year for me was the return of live music. With mask on, I ventured out to see a handful of shows, beginning with Phil Elverum’s live rendition of The Microphones in 2020. I was frightened the entire time, as the unmasked throng of concert-goers around me seemed not to care about the on-going pandemic, but I emerged unscathed and with a smile on my face (hidden by my mask). Little did I know that I’d catch COVID a month later following the abolishment of the mask mandate in Ontario’s schools. I’m thankful that, unlike countless others, I survived the ordeal without any long-term health effects.
Another thing that brought me joy this year was the series of collective deep dives executed by the Dusted staff under the Listening Post banner. For me, these exercises in conversational scrutiny led to the rediscovery of artists I enjoy (The Clean, Wire, Tall Dwarfs, Broadcast) and the discovery of those I hadn’t yet investigated (Les Rallizes Dénudés, Masayuki Takayanagi, Wadada Leo Smith). It’s always pleasurable to witness my well-educated peers eloquently discuss the music that they love, and it’s a plus when I’m able to engage in the process with a comment or two of my own.
If I had to call out a single artist that I feel had a particularly fruitful year in 2022, I’d have to pick Oren Ambarchi. Starting with the 10-year anniversary reissue of his Saggitarian Domain piece, and culminating with Shebang, Ambarchi seemed to be everywhere this year. He, Keiji Haino and Jim O’Rourke released what must be their most eclectic trio record to date, which is also their eleventh thus far. Ghosted, in which he joined up with Fire! Trio’s Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin might just be my favorite of the bunch. And of course, we mustn’t forget Ambarchi’s Black Truffle label, which put out a number of essential releases this year.
Last year, I listed a bunch of Canadian records that filled my bucket, but for 2022 I want to focus on one LP that I kept turning to in the latter half of the year: Ayal Senior’s Az Yashir. Senior assembled the record from tunes he worked up with Matthew “Doc” Dunn, and these acoustic 12-string meditations really enswathed my soul with their warmth. Additional embellishments include pedal steel, percussion, and a few electronic adornments, all of which come together to plant these songs in the furrowed fields first harvested by lunar raga enthusiasts MV and EE. This is unsurprising considering the pedigree of all involved.
And finally, I know that everyone loves a list, so I shall abide. Like last year, this isn’t a “top 10” list exactly, but the following ten records feature some of the music that made this year more than bearable for me:
Pan*American — The Patience Fader (Kranky)
Winged Wheel — No Island (12XU)
Cate Le Bon — Pompeii (Drag City)
Julia Reidy — World in World (Black Truffle)
Horsegirl — Versions of Modern Performance (Matador)
The Reds, Pinks, and Purples — Summer at Land's End (Slumberland)
Ayal Senior — Az Yashir (Medusa Editions)
Ambarchi/Berthling/Werliin — Ghosted (Drag City)
Pulse Emitter — Dusk (Hausu Mountain)
Family Ravine — Away and Instinct (Round Bale)

LACUNA COIL Kicks Off Summer/Fall 2022 North American Tour In Harrisburg
Italian heavy rockers LACUNA COIL kicked off their summer/fall 2022 North American tour last night (Thursday, September 8) at HMAC in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Fan-filmed video of the performance is available below.
As previously reported, "Comalies XX", a "deconstructed" and "transported" version of LACUNA COIL's third album, "Comalies", will be made available on October 14 via Century Media Records.
Back in 2002, LACUNA COIL released an album which is now undeniably an anthem-laden millennial classic that established them as a band with the stamina to go the distance. Now, 20 years later, the current lineup of LACUNA COIL decided to revisit the songs, but not to just re-record them as they were but deconstruct and transport them into 2022.
"This is not a reboot or a spin-off or anything like that," said LACUNA COIL vocalist Cristina Scabbia. "We just wanted to give these songs a 2022 dress and see how this guy or girl who was born 20 years ago would still look fucking slick in 2022."
"Comalies XX" track listing:
CD 1:
01. Swamped XX 02. Heaven's A Lie XX 03. Daylight Dancer XX 04. Humane XX 05. Self Deception XX 06. Aeon XX 07. Tight Rope XX 08. The Ghost Woman And The Hunter XX 09. Unspoken XX 10. Entwined XX 11. The Prophet Said XX 12. Angel's Punishment XX 13. Comalies XX
CD 2:
01. Swamped 02. Heaven's A Lie 03. Daylight Dancer 04. Humane 05. Self Deception 06. Aeon 07. Tight Rope 08. The Ghost Woman And The Hunter 09. Unspoken 10. Entwined 11. The Prophet Said 12. Angel's Punishment 13. Comalies
LACUNA COIL will celebrate the 20th anniversary of "Comalies", by performing it in its entirety at a one-night-only concert on Saturday, October 15 at Fabrique in Milano.
"Comalies" was originally released on October 29, 2002 through Century Media Records. The LP, which featured the band's breakthrough single "Heaven's A Lie", has reportedly gone on to sell over 300,000 copies in the United States alone.
Regarding the "Comalies" title, Scabbia said: "[During the album's recording], we had a sort of creative explosion. We were working in a coma, sort of like in a different dimension. First of all we just wanted to use the word 'coma' but there was something missing so we played with the two words coma and lies."
The "Comalies" song "Swamped" is available as a downloadable track for the music video game series "Rock Band" and also appeared in the 2004 video game "Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines".
LACUNA COIL played its first show in front of an audience in more than two years on April 7 as the support act for APOCALYPTICA at the Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia.
Prior to the Atlanta concert, the last time LACUNA COIL played together was at the group's special September 2020 livestream event where the bandmembers performed their latest album, "Black Anima", in its entirety with no audience in attendance at the Alcatraz Club in Milan, Italy. That show was released as a live album, "Live From The Apocalypse", via Century Media.
LACUNA COIL hadn't played in front of a crowd since the completion of the band's South American tour in February 2020.
Last June, Scabbia told Revolver that she and her bandmates didn't use the coronavirus downtime to work on new music. "We didn't want to force the fact that because we were home, we had to write music," she explained. "We always thought that to write music, you need to be inspired. And inspiration comes from the outside, comes from experiences that you have, things that you live. At least this is valid for us.
"Everything we do in a regular life, in a normal life enriches us and gives us input that we can put in our music," she said. "And also we like to write together. So, if Marco [Coti Zelati, bass] creates the basis of the music together with the other musicians in the band, then Andrea [Ferro, vocals] and I jump in with the lyrics and vocal lines. But we do that together. We need to enter in songwriting mode. So we didn't really like the fact that we had to write separately just because we have to put a record [together] because it's quarantine. Now we are starting to collect ideas 'cause we feel a little bit happier."
Scabbia continued: "We didn't want anything connected to the negativity of the pandemic… That's why I used my time to do something completely different. Because I know that what I did that it's completely different from what I usually do will make me start again to do what I did before with passion — with the same passion. I was just afraid that if I would have used all the downtime making music when I didn't really want to, it would have had a negative influence on me. And it would have been, like, 'I really don't want to do that.' And I also wanted to prove to myself that, yeah, music is main passion. I love what I do for a living, and I hope that I can do it until the day I die. But I also wanted to show myself that I can be capable of doing something else as well."

10, 11, and 12 for the ask game!
for this ask game <333
10. what band were you obsessed with as a child? do you still like them?
oh gosh my memory's really not the best i could not tell you for the life of me what music i was listening to before the age of 10... probably whatever was on the pop radio stations my mom liked... but the first band i really remember being obsessed with was the beach boys!! i saw them at a baseball game as part of some summer concert series when i was in elementary school and i wouldn't shut up about it for weeks to the point my uncle burned me a CD of what he considered to be their best tracks and it made my fucking year (this is the most american sentence i have ever typed omg)... i can't say the obsession lasted all that long, but yknow what the beach boys fucking rock!!! like wouldn't it be nice?? god only knows?? good vibrations????? all bangers the beach boys are awesome they knew the right vibes before "the right vibes" was even a phrase <3
11. what is the best live music show you've ever been to?
AHHH WHAT A GREAT QUESTION I LOVE LIVE SHOWS SO MUCH!!!!!! this might surprise some irls but the best live shows i've been to are not in fact any of the bts concerts, those mean a lot to me for other reasons and i think bangtan are some of the best performers like ever, they really know how to do a live show right
but i think the best experience i've ever had at a live show was this past summer when my flatmate invited me out to see her friend's band perform, they haven't recorded any of their music professionally yet so i can't link to any spotify, but they had a fucking phenomenal sound it was super unique, like rock but with jazz instruments, and the crowd was incredible as well i've never danced so much in my life
i think what makes live music so great is two fold, obvs the music should be good, but the importance of a good crowd should not be underestimated, and as i get older and i have the opportunity to explore local scenes more, i find that smaller live shows tend to leave me... happier? more fulfilled?? the sense of connection i think is stronger in smaller settings, and i've made some good friends by showing up to concerts in rec centres and dive bars - if you are so inclined, i highly recommend looking into what's going on in your local music scene, it's typically a lot more accessible than you'd think (or, it was more accessible than i thought it would be when i started looking around a few years back)
12. who is a band or artist that you've never seen that you're dying to see?
so after everything i just said lol... there's a really easy answer to this: my chemical romance. i had tickets to their 2020 concert, but it kept getting pushed back bc of the pandemic, and by the time they actually performed i didn't live anywhere near where the concert i had tickets for was and i thought it would be impossible to get there.
i should have just gone. i really regret not finding a way there mcr are just truly exceptional, and i've been obsessed with them since i was 12, the next time they go on tour (there will be a next time!!!!! i just have to believe it) i will move heaven and earth if i have to to attend xx

"Bernadette Peters: Broadway's Hottest GILF. Seventy-six years old and still performing sold-out concerts in gorgeous Bob Mackie gowns with her titties on display. Broadway Barks is the best charity event of the summer, and I dread the day I won't be able to watch her parade around with a bevy of the sweetest shelter animals you've ever seen."

Visit the City of Nin, Croatia.
Along the coastal region of Croatia in the Mediterranean region of Eastern Europe, lies a small seaside city called Nin. An once capital city of Croatia during the Medieval Times and the first city of royalty with King Branimir (see statue below) standing on the front entrance of the city's port. Now, here is where I get a bit nepotistic about Nin and I'll be honest, I don't get any money from the city of Nin for writing this post too. My father was born in this city and raised here since the age of 21, when he left the former Yugoslavia to head to America for better opportunities. After the Balkan Wars in the early to mid-90s, Croatia, now its own country, began rebuilding the country into a mecca tourist attraction from the current capital city of Zagreb to Dubrovnik at King's Landing, based on the hit TV series, A Game of Thrones.
Tumblr media
A statue of King Branimir 879 A.D.-892 A.D.
Many tourists that come to Croatia from all over the world, have visited the hot spots such as Split, Dubrovnik, Reikija, Hvar and the Island of Pag. Nin may not be a hot spot for young tourists who want to party all through the night, but Nin has many attractions to offer its tourists. The city is labeling itself as "Romantic City", where older tourists with a spouse can visit the city and have a great time at bars, restaurants, cafes, and other attractions with its magnificent sunsets over the lagoon that even appeases photographers capturing the beauty of Nin.
Tumblr media
A lagoon in Nin.
Tourists have heard about Nin from many travel agencies in Europe and of course, locals from other parts of Croatia. Advent photographers and videographers, such as I, have photographed many parts of Nin to capture its rustic look and ancient architecture that dates back to Roman Times.
Tumblr media
The Roman Temple built in the 1st Century A.D. in Nin.
The city offers a vast shopping center inside the island city for souvenirs, food, toys, and rental apartments for tourist to stay. In addition, the city offers an abundance of tourist information for out of towners by visiting the Tourist Board Nin office. Every summer, the circus is in town for children who seek fun and excitement while vacationing with their parents during the holiday school break. Kids can also swim at Queen's Beach, which is filled with activities such as kite surfing and boating.
Strole through the city and see many of the old churches such as the Church of the Holy Cross and the Church of St. Anselm. The churches have been there for centuries, including St. Nicolas Church, which is outside the city's walls.
Tumblr media
St. Nicolas Church in Nin.
Every summer both the Tourist Board and the city put on many concert events featuring performances from musicians, theater performers and bands from all over Europe. Now as much as I would like to display the many events that are upcoming, just visit the Tourist Board Nin's website at this address: Calendar of events - Tourist board Nin Croatia.
Now for food and dining, I am particular with mostly American food such as pizza, burgers, and grilled barbeque, but Croatia's food is to me and I am being a bit favorable me being a Croat, but the food is really good. Try heading on over to Pizzeria Peperoni, in which, Tripadvisor.com gave the restaurant a high ranking on their website. If you're craving for a burger, head on over to Mad Duck restaurant where a charbroiled burger with melted mozzarella cheese melted into the burger, reminds me of back home in America.
As far as apartment renting, expect to pay around 800 Euros to 1,500 Euros a month, pending on the number of guests staying in the apartment. Car rental is found in Zadar and don't forget that many tourists can also camp with their trailers in the area of Zaton while viewing the beautiful beaches of Zaton.
To come to Nin, Croatia this summer or next, visit your nearest travel agency or go online to some of the top travel sites on the web. All photos were done by the author of this post. To follow the author, please visit the following social media sites.

Boston Sports Championships Drought
Tumblr media
It’s been five soul-crushing years since any professional team in the Boston area has won a sports championship.
Since the turn of the millennium, Boston teams have won 12 sports championships
2001 New England Patriots won the Super Bowl
2003 Patriots won the Super Bowl
2004 Patriots won the Super Bowl
2004 Boston Red Sox won the World Series (first time in 86 years)
2007 Red Sox won the World Series
2008 Boston Celtics won the National Basketball Association championship
2011 Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup
2013 Red Sox won the World Series
2014 Patriots won the Super Bowl
2016 Patriots won the Super Bowl
2018 Patriots won the Super Bowl
2018 Red Sox won the World Series
Until 2018, we in the Boston area never went more than three years between sports championship celebrations. Now it’s beginning to feel an awful lot like the late 20th century around here.
Baseball was the first sport I learned to follow as a kid. One of my teachers was into it, and he’d frequently wheel a big TV into the classroom to watch the Red Sox during important games. They had last won a championship in 1918, but every decade or so they’d tease the local populace with a promising season — and reliably, they’d lose in gut-wrenching fashion.
In 1986 they took a 2-0 lead in the World Series, and things were looking good. Could this be the year?
Don’t be silly.
As any student of baseball history will tell you, the Red Sox went on to lose, again ripping out their fans’ hearts. The infamously emblematic play of that series was when a routine ground ball went through the first-baseman’s legs, allowing the New York Mets to win the game.
That disappointment was the final straw in my fandom. I was so soured that, even when the Sox were poised to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 World Series, I was at a Sarah Brightman concert instead. I was that sure that somehow they’d find a way to screw it up.
Given all of the Boston fandom’s travails of the 20th century, who in their right mind would’ve predicted the turnaround of fortunes in the new millennium. Sports championships galore!
Oddly, it started with a team that had been the laughingstock of the National Football League: the New England Patriots. Ever heard of Bill Belichick? Tom Brady? They instituted a culture of winning. They were the anti-Sox.
And then miracle of miracles happened: after 86 years of futility and misery, the Red Sox  won the World Series in 2004. I was out in western Canada for part of that playoff run. An article in the local paper there proclaimed that if the Red Sox actually won, the end of the world must be nigh.
And oh, how they won! They had been down three games to none to the hated New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. No team in baseball’s long history had ever come back from such a deficit.
What made it all the more dispiriting is that the so-called rivalry between the Yankees and the Red Sox was like the rivalry between a hammer and a nail, with the Sox as the nail.
So the Sox’s playoff run was as good as over, right?
Wrong!
I shed tears of joy when they completed their historic comeback over the Yankees. As far as I was concerned, they could lose the World Series after that, and I’d still be happy. But the Cardinals were little more than a speed bump as the Sox swept their way to destiny, winning their first World Series since 1918.
Things sure had changed on the Boston sports scene. See the list above.
Now the bad old days seem to have returned. So far in 2023
the Bruins entered the playoffs with the best regular season record in the National Hockey League’s history. And then they promptly got eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, after leading the series three games to one.
the Celtics were touted to have the most-talented team in the National Basketball Association. At least they outlasted the Bruins, waiting for the semifinals before starting their summer vacation.
the Red Sox are struggling to win as many games as they lose, but given they’ve opted out of practicing defense, that’s not too bad.
the Patriots have begun this season’s training camp after a shockingly bad offensive showing last year. Rumors are that their offensive personnel are woefully inadequate, with the possible exception of the new offensive coach.
So as they say, all good things must come to an end.
I just hope we don’t have to repeat the late-1900s.
Author’s note: Because I’m not a huge follower of basketball, I probably unfairly omitted the story of the invincible Celtics of the 1960s and their successes in the ’70s and ’80s.
The End
