Library tour - Pratchett and Gaiman focused with some honourable mentions
Of course I've constantly had full bookshelves since I was a child, but I'd always wanted a room I could properly call a library. The house my husband and I now live in has 3 bedrooms, so as we're child free we've each taken one of the spare rooms to do with as we wish.
The majority of the furniture you see is thrifted (aside from the bookcases) and it was self decorated with a lot of cut corners-for example I decided instead of proper flooring it would be cheaper just to pull up the carpet and varnish the actual boards.
I spend more time in here than I do in our living room 😁
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gaiman stuff. Sandman alongside some Alan Moore, Preacher, Hellblazer, my signed copy of The Crow and one volume of Sin City. Two copies each of Ocean (one illustrated), and American Gods (original and authors preferred text). And of course one of my copies of Good Omens. Plus you can see the novelisation of Pan's Labyrinth sitting next to Neverwhere. Del Toro is another favourite fantasist of mine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pratchett stuff. Complete Discworld of course, and I'm slowly increasing my non Discworld Pratchett collection, my second copy of GO, the Paul Kidby illustrated edition (makes sense to have one living with the Gaiman books and the other with Pratchett). Soul Music and Hogfather are both signed, I met Pterry when I was 14 on the Hogfather signing tour.
The crocheted toy was actually from a pattern for a mimic I made (pattern by Complicated Knots on YouTube), but it's luggage-y enough that I put it with the Discworld books, Rob Wilkins' biography of Pterry, and a Librarian to look after everything, make sure the books don't get rowdy and take care of the L-space. I've had him since I was 18.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Specifically Good Omens stuff: a pair of felt plushies a friend made for me after S1 was released (@diedarlingsuk on Instagram), a pair of drawings I bought from a very talented 15 year old artist at a tiny comic con also after S1, (I'd credit her but I've no idea of her name or if she has an online presence), the script book, the TV companion, and an art book by the wonderful @mistysblueboxstuff, who I'm sure most of the fandom know and love. This contains all her GO art from S1 and S2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honourable mention stuff - I put above that I love Del Toro, so I've got to share the Angel of Death from Hellboy 2 as its one of my favourite things in this room. And its an angel, so that's kinda linked.
Made for me by another friend from clay on a doll's body and the wings on wire frames (@sids_workshop on Instagram).
Finally the Complete William Blake illuminated works, a guidebook to a Blake exhibition I went to, and Gustav Dore illustrated copies of Dante, Milton, Coleridge, Tennyson and Poe. I am a huge poetry nerd, and I think many GO fans would find a lot to interest them in some of these, particularly Blake and Milton.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I could go on, there's tons of other stuff I'd like to include but this post is fairly massive already and I wanted to try and stick to my theme.

May 2023 Book Club Picks
Tumblr media
Death and the Librarian and Other Stories by Esther Friesner: A mother trying to nurse her sick son finds that his illness allows him to influence reality. A woman celebrates a very important birthday. A mother and daughter move to a new town, only to discover the fantastical secret ingredients being used at the local diner. All this and more in this collection of short stories which range from the hilarious, to the horrifying, to the heartwarming.
Penelope Goes to Portsmouth by Marion Chesney: Hannah Pym is heading for Portsmouth, and along for the ride is her next matchmaking challenge - Miss Penelope Wilkins, the practical, no-nonsense daughter of a wealthy merchant, and Lord Augustus Railton, a rakish ne'er-do-well. When the traveling companions are roped into an intriguing mystery involving a kidnapped footman, Hannah sees it as the perfect opportunity to bring the chasm between the potential lovers.
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski: Johnny Truant is a unmotivated slacker whose biggest concern is his next one night stand. All that changes when he and his friend Lude explore the apartment of Zampano, a recently deceased blind recluse. In the old man's apartment, they find writing - pages and pages of it, on every blank surface - and scratches on the floor. Gathering up the pieces, Johnny realizes the writing comes together as a dissertation about the critically acclaimed documentary The Navidson Record, which follows the Navidson family as they realize their house is bigger inside than it is outside. And then they discover the hallway...
Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller: Willy Loman has been a salesman for thirty-four years, and wants nothing more than to make it big. But at age sixty, Willy is finally cast aside by the company, and must face reality without a dream to keep him afloat. As he watches his sons struggle to follow in his footsteps, Willy is faced with one burning question - is this all worth it?
Watchmen by Alan Moore: The time is 1985, and the world inches closer to WWIII every day. Costumed superheros once proliferated the scene to maintain truth, justice, and the American way, but have since been outlawed, forced into retirement, gangpressed into working for the government, or operating illegally. When one government-sponsored hero, the Comedian, is murdered in his apartment, fellow vigilante Rorschach enlists the help of his former colleagues to figure who and why the Comedian was killed.

Found this mid-year book questionnaire on the youtubes, and felt like playing along... but didn't want to make a video. So here ya go. Play along if you feel like it.
1. Best book you’ve read so far this year. The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett
2. Best sequel you've read so far this year. Not counting Discworld books, Tales from Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin.
3. New release you haven't read yet, but want to. I don't really keep up with new releases. Honestly I'm a bit suspicious of most of the current 'trendy' books.
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year. Terry Pratchett: A Life with Footnotes, the official biography by Rob Wilkins.
5. Biggest disappointment. Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro. The Remains of the Day was wonderful and broke my heart, so I had high hopes for this... and I hated it. It didn't operate like good literary fiction or good sci-fi. However I try to make sense of it, nothing adds up. Hated it hated it hated it.
6. Biggest surprise. Probably just how much I hated Never Let Me Go.
7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you.) New to me: Connie Willis. I read To Say Nothing of the Dog early in the year, and a collection of her award-winning short stories more recently. I'm very eager to read more — though the length of most of her novels is a bit daunting, and one of them is a time travel novel about the Black Death, so... it might take me a while to feel brave enough to read more of her work.
8. Newest fictional crush. Several of the Wayfarer crew in The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. I didn't find the plot very engaging so overall I didn't LOVE the book, but the characters were super cute and endearing.
9. Newest favourite character. Probably Tiffany Aching from The Wee Free Men. I'm excited to read the following books in her series.
10. Book that made you cry. At the risk of being repetitive, The Wee Free Men and The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett. Also Tehanu and Tales from Earthsea by Le Guin.
11. Book that made you happy. Look it's all Pratchett, okay? Now I've caught the Pratchett bug, that's the main thing that excites me right now.
12. Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received) Either the Folio Society edition of A Midsummer Night's Dream with illustrations by W. Heath Robinson, or the box set of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with Alan Lee artwork.
13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year? I hope to finish The Lord of the Rings before the year is out. I'm 3/4 through the first book so far, though I plan to take breaks and read other books because it's a LOT to read straight through.

Aca Top 10: Broadway — VoicePlay music video
youtube
VoicePlay have a reputation as the theater kids of the a cappella world. So it should come as no surprise that the second entry in their "Aca Top 10" series is a countdown of songs from Broadway musicals, and that they made it entertaining as all get-out.
Details:
title: Aca Top 10 – Broadway
original songs: "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" from Avenue Q; [0:27] "Sherry" from Jersey Boys; [0:45] "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast; [1:07] "Seasons of Love" from Rent; [1:26] "Master of the House" from Les Miserables; [1:43] "All That Jazz" from Chicago; [2:03] "He Lives In You" from The Lion King; [2:19] "Popular" from Wicked; [2:43] gentle mockery of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark; [2:45] "Phantom of the Opera" from Phantom of the Opera; [3:10] "Hello!" from The Book of Mormon
written by: "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx; "Sherry" by Bob Gaudio; "Belle" by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, & Tim Rice; "Seasons of Love" by Jonathan Larson; "Master of the House" by Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, & Jean-Marc Natel; "All That Jazz" by John Kander & Fred Ebb; "He Lives In You" by Lebohang "Lebo M" Morake, Mark Mancina, & Jay Rifkin; "Popular" by Stephen Schwartz; "Phantom of the Opera" by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Hart, Richard Stilgoe, & Mike Batt; "Hello!" by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, & Robert Lopez
arranged by: Layne Stein & Geoff Castellucci
release date: 17 September 2014
My favorite bits:
starting with just Geoff and Layne, then revealing the others by raising dropping the curtain
Puppets! And puppet violence!
Geoff lowkey doing the "Sherry" choreography from their boy bands medley, and Tony playing to the camera
Earl's adorable cartoon-y giggle
singing Belle's name on a bell chord, nice
getting double duty from the Book of Mormon by using it as Belle's ♫ "a-MAAA-zing" ♫ book
✨ ::jazz hands:: ✨
the sudden ~drama~ when they start "Phantom"
and the sudden lack of drama when they jump into "Hello!"
Layne's utter delight at getting to poke his finger through the doorbell drawing on the sign
the bloopers from Earl's outro spiel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
○ Several of these songs have appeared in later VoicePlay videos:
Based on feedback to this video, they recorded a full version of "Phantom of the Opera" with Rachel Potter just over a year later.
They partnered with L.A.-based singer AJ Rafael for a beautiful rendition of "Seasons of Love" in early 2017.
"Popular" was, of course, included in their epic 2022 Wicked medley with Emoni WIlkins and Rachel Potter.
○ Friend and frequent collaborator Rachel Potter had understudied Glinda in the second national tour of Wicked.
○ They have since done a few collaborations with John Pinto Jr., a longtime cast member in The Book of Mormon both on Broadway and in the touring company.
○ This medley was included in their setlist for the 2015 Sing-Off tour.
○ The video got a nice feature article on Broadway World.
○ It also received several nice responses from friends and some of the shows.

Deep Cut: Thunderbirds
youtube
September 30 1965-December 25 1966. 32 Episodes, ITV
Figured I'd look back at the shows I've discussed before but here it'd be a bit more detailed.
In the far future, International Rescue, led by the Tracy family, safegaurds the world from disasters both natural and man-made.
Father Jeff (Peter Dyneley) oversees the operation. His sons pilot or command each Thunderbird vehicle.
Scott (Shane Rimmer) flies Thunderbird 1
Virgil (David Holliday/Jerry Wilkin) pilots Thunderbird 2
Alan (Ray Barrett), the youngest. He also flies Thunderbird 3 and on occasion commands Thunderbird 5
Gordon (David Graham) is the undersea expert and drives Thunderbird 4
John (Ray Barrett) doesn't really do a whole lot, mostly monitors radio communication in Thunderbird 5.
There's also Brains (David Graham), the inventor of their gear and Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward (Sylvia Anderson) their London based agent.
The main problem facing IR was disasters but every so often they tangled with foes looking to steal their equipment.
Wonderfully done via marionets but a pinch too episodic. Even with that, it's still a good series with some amazing visuals and music.
