For someone who struggled with this chapter for the longest time, I AM SO PROUD OF IT 🤣🤣
Big thanks to @welcometomyworld13 for editing 🫶

Jin’s house was… I guess functional would be the nicest way to put it. It didn’t really look lived in at all. No pictures, or wall décor, nothing cluttering the floors or furniture. Nothing unnecessary, you could say. But it was nice and clean. Which was more than I could say for my one room back in Aliya and I’s trailer. At least things weren’t terribly awkward between us and them. Jungkook kept the conversation relatively light, making sure it kept flowing even when he was the only one doing most of the talking.
When Jin proposed dinner, I kind of expected all of them to be there. But that wasn’t the case. Apart from him, Jimin, and Jungkook, the only other person in attendance was Taehyung. Jin having informed me that the other three had prior engagements and regrettably wouldn’t be joining us. Which was a bummer. Out of all of them, Yoongi was the one I was most at ease with, although Jungkook was a close second. But Yoongi was also the one I’d be living with and introducing him to Aliya and Yunho tonight would have been nice. That and a distraction from the way Taehyung kept staring at me would have been a good bonus.
I shifted for about the hundredth time since taking a seat on the end of the couch, Jungkook oblivious as he kept entertaining Yunho’s questions. Deciding anything was better than just sitting here, I stood, mumbling under my breath about seeing if Jin needed help with dinner as I ducked out of there.
“You know, you really didn’t have to go through all the trouble. If you had just ordered out, we would have been just as satisfied.” I told Jin as I entered the kitchen.
He looked over his shoulder, radiant smile taking over his features before he moved to the side to give me room to peek at his work. It didn’t take me long to deduce what he had decided to make. I gasped, looking up at him excitedly.
“Are you making chicken and waffles?”
He chuckled, nodding as he added the last bit of chicken he had into an air fryer.
“I am. I hope that’s okay.”
“Okay? Are you kidding! That’s literally my favorite meal!”
“Is it?” He hummed, managing the settings on the machine before hitting start. “What a coincidence.”
The idea of dinner was a thousand times more appealing now as I watched Jin whip up the batter for the waffles. My appetite returning full force while he cooked. Even more so as I began to smell the chicken in the fryer. A part of me was worried that I might have been bothering Jin by being in his kitchen while he was cooking. But any time he flashed a smile my direction those thoughts were quickly dashed. Surely if he wanted me gone, he would say something. Instead, he was more than happy to entertain my questions and let me help.
“You know what makes these even better?”
He cocked an eyebrow at me. Digging through his hoard of spices on the countertop, I found what I was looking for. Adding a generous amount of cinnamon to one of his waffles before he closed the lid. His nose scrunched, looking dubiously at my masterpiece before closing the maker for it to cook.
“Cinnamon?”
“And if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can put bananas in it too.”
“Now I know you’re making things up.”
I laughed, shaking my head. “No. Seriously. I’ll let you try mine sometime and you can see for yourself.”
He side-stepped closer to me, his arm brushing against mine.
“You’ll cook for me?”
“Sure. Why no-“ I lifted my face to his, cutting myself off.
He was much closer now. His face only a few inches from mine. He was handsome. I knew that from the get-go but admiring him from this close up was different. I found myself appreciating features I hadn’t really paid as much attention to before. Like the fullness of his eyebrows and the shape of his nose. And dark brown pools of his eyes. The way he looked at me was as if it was the first he had in a while. Like this wasn’t the first time we’d been in a kitchen together and he missed me. Unable to hold his gaze with that look, I dropped my own only to linger on his lips.
They were full and pink and looked unbelievably soft. A part of me wanted to feel them. Test their texture for myself. All I really had to do was tilt my face a little higher and I’d know.
The last thing I need is for Jin to kick my ass if he found out I was here.
My brows furrowed remembering the words my late-night visitor had spoken. I didn’t understand what Jin had to do with him, or why he’d be upset about what happened between us. But until I figured out who he was, I couldn’t very well ask Jin about it.
“You look like you’re thinking awfully hard.”
I looked up at him. Giving him a small smile.
“Not really.”
“Funny. You said the same thing last time too.”
If I wasn’t confused before, I sure as shit was now. Jin’s smile faded as he realized what he just said. Face visibly closing off as he leaned away and turned his attention back to our food.
“What?” I whispered, not about to let him off the hook.
A loud clap made me jump. My head turning to find Taehyung with his signature lollipop in mouth as he swapped looks between me and Jin.
“Is dinner ready?”
“Just about. Would you and Y/N mind setting the table? You can use those plates.” He nodded towards a stack of plates and utensils he already had out on the counter.
As much as I hated to leave the conversation where it ended, I didn’t really want to bring it up in front of Taehyung.
“Sure.” I agreed, not putting much effort into the half-hearted smile I gave him as I grabbed the pile of plates and silverware.
He didn’t spare me a glance. Finishing up his waffles and pulling the chicken out of the fryer as I turned around to do as he asked. I avoided Taehyung’s gaze. Something about him just made me antsy. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, and I felt terrible about it considering he hadn’t outright done anything to warrant such feelings on my part. But I couldn’t help it. Even as I ducked my head to pass him on my way to the dining area, I could feel his eyes on me.
Even the sound of his footsteps behind me put me on edge. My back stiff as I started separating place settings. I tried to shove the uneasiness away by distracting myself with my task. That was until his hand snatched my wrist, pulling the plate out of my grasp.
“I’m here to help, aren’t I?” He drawled, tongue rolling the sucker in his mouth to one side.
Letting him take the stack of plates from me, I followed him around the table to place utensils next to every plate he laid down. The silence suffocating until he sighed.
“No need to be so tense. I won’t bite unless you ask.”
“I’m sorry?”
He scoffed, thrusting the last plate down roughly before turning to me. He propped his hip against the edge of the table, eyes roaming my face.
“It pisses me off you know? It seems like everyone has your attention except me.”
I shook my head, not understanding what he was getting at. He stepped closer. My first instinct was to back away. The sharpness in his blue eyes was predatory in a way, my fight or flight response flaring at the look.
“Tell me something. Why’d you pick Yoongi?”
“What?” The off-topic question startled me.
I wasn’t sure what I thought he was referring to, but it certainly wasn’t Yoongi.
“And Jin? What was that in the kitchen?”
“Were you watching us?”
He chuckled darkly, his body toe-to-toe with mine now. I lifted my head to keep eye contact. At least until he leaned down, letting his breath ghost across my ear.
“I’m always watching when it comes to you.” He whispered.
Swallowing the lump in my throat, I leaned away from him. Forcing our eyes together once more.
“Why is that?”
“Because I don’t trust them around you.”
I frowned. My eyes flickering in the direction of the others. What did that mean?
“Why?”
He took a deep breath, stepping away from me completely.
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
You’ll find out soon enough.
I froze, staring at him. Those words. I’d heard them before.
“What’s wrong? Did Tae get to you?”
The voice followed by the arm slung around my shoulders startled me. But Jungkook only smiled, bright eyes turned towards the man in question as he chuckled.
“Don’t worry about it. He always rubs someone the wrong way every once in a while. He can’t help himself.”
“Ironic. Coming from the one who can’t keep his emotions in check.” Taehyung muttered, rounding the table to take a seat in a chair as far away from me as he could.
Jungkook didn’t take to that too kindly. Smile slipping off his face as he squared off against Taehyung despite the man sitting down.
“Quiet. No fighting at the dinner table.” Jin scolded, entering with platters piled high with waffles and chicken.
Aliya and Yunho entered right after him, Jimin not too far behind. Jungkook and Taehyung looked away from one another. Jin’s words seeming to have done the trick. Jungkook was quick to recover though, big grin back in place as he pulled out a chair for me.
“Sit here.”
Not finding a good reason not to accept, I sat. He pushed me in, making sure I was settled before scrambling to grab a seat next to me. I didn’t miss the way Taehyung rolled his eyes from across the table, Jin shaking his head softly as he offered Aliya and Yunho a seat before claiming one of his own. Jimin seemed to be the only one not fazed by Jungkook’s demeanor. He silently took up an empty spot, refusing to meet anyone’s eyes as he waited for permission to start digging in. It was soon granted by Jin, ever the gentleman as he started filling up plates for his guests.
“Wow.” Yunho’s eyes were huge as he took in the food. “This looks amazing.”
“It really does. And you picked well. Chicken and waffles is one of Y/N’s favorite foods.” Aliya laughed. “She’d have it for every meal if she could.”
“Good to know.” Jin chuckled, easily slotting himself into a conversation of asking how long Aliya and I have known each other and what she did at the circus.
Yunho wasn’t left out, Jungkook sure to pull him into another conversation of his own. Video games, of all things. Right up Yunho’s alley and Jungkook’s too if the way he talked about them was any indication. I picked up my fork, making sure to take at least a few bites here and there so as to not offend Jin and all his hard work. But if I were being honest… not even my favorite meal could restore my appetite after tonight’s events. And especially not when I could feel heavy gazes fall on me all throughout dinner.
Tumblr media
“Jay!”
The boy turned at the call of his name. Pulling a pair of earbuds from his ears as he caught sight of me waving at him from the front entrance. He stopped in the crowd, bright smile splitting his features as he waited for me to catch up.
“Cutting it a little close today, aren’t we?” He chuckled.
“I woke up late and I couldn’t exactly skip breakfast, could I?”
He rolled his eyes, silently taking my backpack from me as we continued towards the school.
“You would if I refused to share my notes with you this time.”
“You would never.” I teased, bumping my shoulder into him. “Best friends would never let best friends fail.”
Tumblr media
“You’ll stay in contact over the summer, right?”
“Of course. Are you expecting me to ghost you?” Jay snorted, throwing his packed bag into the back of a taxi.
“It’s just… we’ve never spent a summer apart. Now you’re leaving all the sudden.”
His hands fell on my shoulders, squeezing until I looked up at him sadly.
“I’ll call at least once a week. And text you all the time. It’ll be like I’m not even gone.”
He pulled me into a hug. My arms wrapping around him tightly until I had to let go. With one last comforting smile, he left. And I stood there watching the taxi drive off until I couldn’t see it anymore. He promised to call and text. Everything would be fine, like he said. Except that it wasn’t. He never called and other than texting a couple of times, that eventually stopped too.
I attempted to call him, and he never answered. Weeks turned into months. Summer ended and high school started, but he never showed up like he was supposed to. Those months turned into years, and I never saw or heard from my best friend again.
Tumblr media
“See you at the recital this weekend!” I yelled over my shoulder as I exited the practice studio.
It was getting late. The light fading quickly into night with the storm obscuring most of the sky. The wind was freezing, and snow fell in little flakes everywhere. Littering the sidewalks and roads in a thin sheet of white. I shoved my hands into my pockets as I set off down the street. Only making it a handful of feet before I stopped in front of someone.
“Y/N…”
I stared at him. Not sure if what I was seeing was real or not. His hair was longer, brushing the tops of his shoulders. Curly strands hanging in his eyes as he took me in. It had been five years, but there was no way I could mistake him. Even with how… different he looked. He was no longer the scrawny middle schooler I had seen him as last. He was grown. Baby fat melted away and replaced with sharp features. His body was lean, and he was so much taller. But he was the same person. The usual warmth I found in his eyes were tinged with worry and sadness and the smile I was so used to seeing on him was gone. The same, but not.
“Jay?”
He looked relieved that I had recognized him. Feet taking a couple more steps toward me.
“Y/N, it’s so good to see you again.”
I shook my head. Still trying to wrap my mind around him being here. Here, in front of me. After five long years.
“Jay, what happened? Where did you go?”
He closed the rest of the distance between us. His head scanning the street around us, the fear in his eyes something I was not accustomed to seeing.
“Not here. I can explain everything, just not right now.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Come with me.” He urged.
“What? To where? Jay, where have you been?”
“Y/N, please. Please. I’ll answer everything. But we need to leave. Now. They’re coming.”
“Who? Are you in trouble?” I asked, my fear spiking as his panic began to take hold of him.
His eyes met mine, the anguish in his unsettling. In all the years I’d known him, he’s never looked at me this way.
“It’s my fault. I’m so sorry, Y/N. It’s all my fault.”
Tumblr media
I jolted awake. Shooting up in bed as I gasped trying to catch my breath. My consciousness lagged, everything around me slowly filtering through the haze of my dream. I tried to keep ahold of the last remnants of my dream as it faded. Bits and pieces coming through, but for the most part, I couldn’t remember exactly. The boy. I could remember the boy. And I could remember he was important to me. But he didn’t look familiar. I didn’t recognize him, and I didn’t know what he had to do with me. My body was covered in sweat, and I could feel the beginnings of a headache starting to take hold as I forced myself out of bed.
What the hell was that? Just a dream? Something about it felt like more than that. I tried to think back on it, remember it, but it was like a black void in my thoughts. I couldn’t. And the harder I tried, the worse my headache got. I pressed the heel of my hand to my eye, groaning at the sharp pain beginning to build there as I flicked my lamp on. It was still dark outside, the moon the only primary source of light. I checked my clock seeing that it was only 3 AM. I hadn’t been asleep for very long. Sighing, I fished through my bedside drawers for the bottle of pain killers I kept there. My actions halting as something outside the window caught my eye.
I stopped digging, focusing on the person walking from the direction of the Dark Circus tent towards the trailers across the lot. The long coat they wore brushing their calves with every step. I couldn’t make out features with the hood over their head. And being dressed in all black didn’t help me distinguish body type either.
I watched him walk. Stride long and confident up until he stopped altogether. I held my breath as he stood there. Facing straight ahead and still. My eyes roamed the immediate vicinity, wondering what he was looking at, but seeing nothing. I looked back to him. Still standing there, like a statue, face straight ahead. It was eerie. Chills beginning to run down my spine the longer I watched him. A part of me wishing he would move. Something about him being so still perturbed me. Finally, he did. But instead of continuing on his way, his body turned. Towards me. His head tilted down towards the ground.
I knew if he lifted his head, he’d be able to see me. My lamp was still on after all, and my curtains were wide open. But I was riveted in place. My body refusing to respond even though I knew I should be hiding, or at least looking away. But I didn’t. I continued to stare even as his head slowly lifted, slivers of moonlight invading the shadows his hood had been casting. But instead of a face, they cast an ethereal glow upon the white papier-mâché mask underneath. The eyes cut out and leaving black holes behind them in the darkness surrounding him. A white mask I had encountered before.

there should be a waffle-type device that creates a perfect over-easy friend egg with cooked white and runny yolk. i know fast food places have egg puck machines and thats fine but i want over easy. or is it over medium. whatever cooked white runny yolk is. i think you could probably make this easily it would just be a little iron with a closing lid that cooks the egg outside-in like w affle maker. would an air fryer work? sound off in the comments (i can flip an egg without rupturing it just fine thank you im just blogging)

Merry Christmas, Janus
Summary: After the gift exchange, Janus returns to the Dark Side of the Mindpalace to relax and reflect. As he picks up his new socks, he finds a second gift from Roman…maybe he really should have laid off of the wine.
Pairings: None, background prinxiety if you squint
Warnings: WINE/ALCOHOL MENTION, NO COMFORT, I GUESS?
(A/N: So I'm posting this really, REALLY late because I had no energy to finish this but I finally do!)
When Logan had invited him and Remus to this year’s gift exchange with the whole Fam-ILY, Janus hadn’t expected things to go the way they did. Yes, he might have downed a few glasses as he refused to show up sober. He didn’t want to have to remember such a warm and soft event. He didn’t to have to hear all the sappy shit coming from those Light side dorks. Especially from Patton. Janus especially did NOT want to deal with Virgil and Roman while he was sober.
Speaking of the prince, Janus finds himself glancing over at the Creative side. Roman was currently curled up on the couch with Virgil, babbling away as he showed the anxious side his twenty-dollar bill with his face on it. Virgil chuckled, lounging against Roman’s side, and saying something Janus could care less about. Though…something twists in Janus’ stomach as he watches the two of them get cozy, Roman wrapping an arm around Virgil who nuzzles him. Gross.
Janus watches them a little longer before turning away. He finishes his remaining wine and makes the mug vanish as he tries to ignore his still throbbing cheek from the bitch-slap earlier. Yeah, he probably deserved it though. The lying side then glances at Roman and Virgil again, glancing away when Virgil suddenly glares at him. Janus doesn’t know when, but Virgil has been acting like the prince’s guard dog and hardly ever leaves his side. Huffing, Janus turns to Remus.
“Remus, get up. We’re going home.” Janus hisses.
Remus looks up from where he’s sitting on the floor with his air-fryer. Somehow, Remus has managed to put several substances and a stick of deodorant in it.
“Already?” he whines. “But I wanna stay! I’m making dinner!”
Janus cringes at the chunky slop in the air-fryer bucket.
“We already had dinner. You can bring that home and play with it all you want there.”
Remus pouts and unplugs his appliance, tucking the bucket back in.
“Boo, you’re no fun, you Scrooge.”
“I don’t care. I don’t want to be here. It’s getting too sappy for my liking.”
“Fiiine.” Remus then turns to the rest of the room. “Hey, dorks! We’re dipping out. Snakey here is getting grouchy.”
Janus huffs.
“Thanksss, Remusss…” he hisses.
After what felt like an hour of goodbyes, thank yous, and Christmas wishes as well as a good riddance from Roman and Virgil, Janus and Remus finally sank out and returned home. As soon as they popped up into the dark and cold common room, Janus beelined towards his office while Remus scurried off somewhere with the air-fryer. Janus didn’t care and entered his office, locking the door behind him. Usually, this is where he starts chugging a bottle of wine but for once he’s trying to sober up so he can sort out his mind. Maybe he’ll thank Roman for slapping him somewhat awake.
Roman…
Of all the sides…Roman had to be the one to have his name.
Janus sighs and stares at the box on his desk. Despite everything he’d done to the prince, Roman still put in the effort to make his gift look nice. Roman was even thoughtful, giving him a gift he could make use of rather than giving him some fancy trinket. The snake side picks up the box and opens it. Luckily, the bitch-slap-in-a-box was a one-time thing. Setting the lid aside, Janus picks up the mustard yellow socks inside and gazes at them. Sure, they’re just socks and usually they’re not a gift you want to receive on Christmas, but part of Janus couldn’t be upset. Roman gave him an actual gift rather than just leaving him with nothing.
Trying to ignore his heavy thoughts, the deceitful side discards his gloves and runs his fingers over the fabric of the sock. They’re quite soft, much to his surprise. He at least expected it to be some god-awful fabric that would try to rip the scales off of his feet. Janus then picks up the other sock and feels it only to pause when he feels something crinkly in the sock. He winces and prays it’s not another prank from the prince. Bracing himself, Janus reaches in, and his fingertips pluck a folded and now crumpled piece of stationery. Of course. There in black ink and written in cursive is his own name. Oh. Janus then opens the paper, a very long and cursive message waiting inside.
Dear Sna  Dec  Janus,
I apologize if my gift to you isn’t anything fancy. And I’m not talking about the bitch slap. Sorry for that by the way. I wasn’t going to do it at first but I thought it’d be funny. Honestly, I’m glad I got to see it in person. I really wanted to slap you, but I didn’t want to look like the jerk of all jerks. Again. Now, why am I writing this letter to you? Well…I have a lot to say to you and I don’t think you’d understand if I tried to say it in person. Despite your role, you’d never believe me. You’d probably think I was sucking up to our dear old dad or even Thomas. So, I’m doing it in letter form. Writing always helped me free my mind of the things I don’t want to think about.
I just wanted to know, why do you hate me? Forgive me if you’re still bitter about the hat stealing and the name calling. Everything. To be truly honest, I had no idea what to do. When we were in the courtroom, everything was flipped outside down and all around. They said to trust you and then they said not to. When I tried to follow, they didn’t like it. Like I walked down the wrong path despite them giving me the map. Funny, isn’t it? Trying to do what you thought was right only to hurt yourself and someone else. That’s probably why you hate me.
I suppose I should also apologize for my growing ego. Better it grew rather than let it fall apart and ruin Thomas, right? Then again, what do you care? I’m just a bumbling, arrogant prince who cares for no one but himself. Is that what you wanted to hear?
I also miss you. When we were up on that stage and I had no clue you had taken Patton’s form, I had fun acting on stage and having, well, ‘you’ to direct me. It was fun and you seemed to like drama and theater. I had hoped we could work together again but now I’m scared I wouldn’t be able to tell when you’re acting and when you’re not. It’s a shame, really. After we were formally introduced, I thought we were friends. I wanted to be friends, believe me, but I’m scared. I don’t want you to lie to me again and make me believe you care. For Thomas’ sake I’m willing to be as civil as I can so we can work together but outside of that, I don’t think I’m ready to face you. Maybe in the future, we could talk but not right now. Not until I feel ready.
I suppose I should end this letter now. If you’re still reading this, Janus, then thank you, I guess. Thank you for not trashing this letter. I mean, you can once you’re done reading if you want. You probably still don’t care. I’ll see you around the Mindpalace or something. Take care of Remus for me. He seems to like you more. I really wish we could’ve been friends. I hope you enjoy the rest of your Christmas evening. I mean, you won right? You beat the mighty prince and his massive ego. Congratulations. Merry Christmas, Janus.
Roman
Janus stares at the letter, rereading it once more before putting it down on the desk with shaky hands. He rubs at his face, ignoring the fact that his cheeks were wet now. He leans back in his chair, hanging in his head guilt. God, Roman…what had he done? He just…the prince wanted to be friends…Janus licks his lips, the taste of salt and bitter grapes mixing. He stares at the letter sitting on his desk, regret and something heavy pooling in his gut. Janus hadn’t realized how much he’d hurt the prince has was supposed to protect.
He really should lay off of the wine…

To anyone who ever moves, there are 3 essentials you MUST have in your home. that you will THINK you can live without if you go too long without owning one:
Microwave
Self explanatory, you need a microwave. I spent 2 months without a microwave in my apartment because i convinced myself the stove and air fryer were all i needed. And then when my roommate moved in, she immediately bought us a microwave and I felt like a FOOL for forgetting.
Bucket
Bucket from home depot or lowes. They’re like $5 for the bucket and lid, and you may not use it often, but if you need a bucket and dont have one, you will suffer.
Milk Crate
Its a makeshift table, its a single step ladder, storage container, it is the most sturdy box on the planet, it will never give up on you. I use a milk crate for all my groceries. For a month, two milk crates stacked on top of eachother was a makeshift 2 compartment cube organizer for shoes. For 6 months, it was the table i put my router and modem on top of. My milk crates are my best friends.

THURSDAY THINGS
It's bingo night again. The kitchen began serving food to the players for the first time last week and it went well. Sliders, tater skins, wings, and grilled chicken skewers with a delicious spicy peanut sauce. Fries, onion rings, tater tots. Good stuff.
I figured we wouldn't sell many of our wieners but we did about twice what I expected. We'll see if that continues this week. I have to admit the steamed dogs are pretty darn good.
Digging through the freezer I found a giant pack of country style ribs. They took forever to thaw but I was ready to cook them yesterday. They were way too big for the air fryer so I went old school and used the cast iron pan.
I gave them a good sear and them baked them with some seasoning. After an hour and 45 minutes I took them out and was going to add barbecue sauce but discovered we were out so I improvised and used teriyaki sauce and some hoisin sauce. Another 30 minutes without the lid and they came out perfect. Tender and delicious.
I have enough for sandwiches for lunch. And probably more sandwiches tomorrow.
This has been a post about food, hasn't it? Now if you'll excuse me, I've made myself hungry.
I love you, baby. You are the tastiest dish. YUM!
Y'all have a delicious day.

korean fried chicken bento
recipe/ info below the cut :)
a slightly altered kfc recipe, this one is more suited towards making ahead / meal prepping. because of the cornflakes in the batter, it stays crispier for longer. on top of this, it works better with an air fryer than other recipes as it doesn’t have as much of a floury residue after cooking even without deep frying. I like to serve this one with my pickled cucumbers (recipe) and rice. of course normal rules apply for storing rice. this one can also be done with tofu or traditional batter so let me know if you’d like a recipe for that.
recipe :
cut up the chicken into bite size pieces and put in a bowl with buttermilk, paprika, garlic powder and mixed herbs (dried). you can’t really over season this so go wild. marinade for as long as possible, minimum 30 mins.
in a tupperware box with a (leakproof) lid, combine equal parts flour, cornflour and smashed cornflakes. also add equal (but obviously smaller) parts paprika, garlic powder and mixed herbs again.
about 5 at a time, drop a piece of chicken into the pot and shake with the lid on. this method gets all the scraggly bits and makes it super crispy.
once all coated, leave them for a few minutes. this allows some of the flour to get wet and reduce chance of a floury residue after cooking.
in an airfryer or oven, cook until golden brown and it is at least 75ºc or 165ºf. for deep frying, the process is pretty much the same but with the option of a second fry.
for the sauce, combine equal parts gochujang, honey, soy sauce and vinegar, plus a smaller part of sesame oil.
heat in a pan until thick then coat the chicken.
serve with rice and pickled cucumbers.
enjoy :)

Cook Khoresh Gheymeh with Me!
Thursday night I cooked one of my favorite Persian dishes, khoresh gheymeh. This is one of the many dishes my grandmother would cook us back home every Monday night. A few years ago, I asked to watch her in the kitchen and learned how to make this dish. Cooking Persian food helps me connect with and honor my culture, which can be challenging at times as my father’s side of the family is not Persian. I made this meal with an American friend, and I loved sharing the Persian culture with him. I taught him how to prepare Persian rice by boiling it in excess salty water, straining and rinsing it, adding more salt to taste, and then putting it back into the pot with a layer of oil at the bottom. I have cooked Persian rice many times before, but this was the first time I was able to get perfect tahdig that flipped right out of the pot! The night was a success when he asked to get seconds and take the leftovers home. My experience did not really challenge my preconceptions as I’m familiar with the Persian cooking process, but I certainly thought twice about the hefty amount of oil required for the tahdig and French fries. The oil used in Persian cuisine is one of the only similarities it shares with American cuisine, where Persian dishes have a tart flavor that can be created by citrus or other tart fruits such as pomegranate and sour cherries. While not present in gheymeh, the use of herbs is also very prevalent.
هاله
Below is the recipe I used along with step by step pictures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we have added the stew beef and diced onions to a pot with olive oil. I seasoned them and browned all sides of the beef without fully cooking it.
Tumblr media
Next, I added the tomato sauce and previously boiled yellow split peas to the pot. The beef will finish cooking in the tomato sauce which will prevent it from becoming tough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I seasoned with the salt, pepper, cinnamon, and turmeric (I am not fancy enough to have saffron). I also added one lime's worth of juice (way more than the recipe calls for, but this is personal preference) and dried lime powder (which can be purchased on Amazon)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I have dried limes which can also be purchased on Amazon. I am using the sharp inner part of my kitchen scissors to puncture holes in the skin to allow the sauce to soak in. Any tool that can puncture holes without shattering the entire lime will work.
Tumblr media
This is completely optional, but I roasted some eggplant to add to the stew. I cut the eggplant into thin slices, brushed with olive oil, seasoned with salt and pepper, and put it into the air fryer at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.
Tumblr media
Here I am straining the white basmati rice I cooked until al-dente.
Tumblr media
I have then lined the bottom of the pot with peanut oil and put the rice back inside with the heat on low and the lid on to steam the rice until completely cooked and the tahdig has formed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are the final results from the cooking! I served with plain yogurt on the side.

Incouod make some chicken nuggets on my aorfryr rn but I don't like using my air fryer bc it's like. Falling apart. The metal basquet thing is like detached from the plastic handle cover thing so like u have to take out the handle lid and then fish out the metal basquet that goes inside with like a fork or something and even though I always make sure to unplug it I still feel like I'm gonna get electrocuted

RL Post Alert - The Kitchen
I interrupt our usual scheduled programming of fandom for the necessary interruption of RL.
Don't worry, it's nothing bad.
In RL, I am often asked (it's the most popular "FAQ" I hear) about my kitchen and the rest of my life. You see, Cassandra (my character) and I share something - we're both sailors. I even used to live on my boat because it was cheaper to live on my boat and pay the more expensive marina fee for a liveaboard than it was to live in a cramped apartment in a not so great area of town rife with crawling things someone shouldn't have to live with but, hey, sometimes that's the landlord you end up with. So, I bought a 50 year old boat and I lived on that for four years in Toronto.
I digress (again, I'm bad for that).
So, I learned a few things about what a house/home/apartment really needs and still be completely and totally operational.
If this helps in any way, and if in my limited knowledge because what I know is a drop in the ocean compared to what my grandmother and mother knew, then by all means ask. The kitchen isn't the only home front I'm familiar with running... just don't ask me about children. I don't have any by choice so not the best to ask.
Heads up - over 90% of the gizmos and gadgets the kitchen stores try to shove off on you may be only half useful but are a giant waste of space and money. You don't need them. Save your money and your space with limiting what you have to the following.
Appliances
Stove
Oven
Fridge
immersion Blender (hand held)
Slow cooker
Basic toaster
(optional) Microwave. I have a 3-in-1 that is also a toaster oven and air fryer but it was pricey. However, it does mean that I have one appliance that does three things. All else fails, none of these are all that necessary.
(optional) Electric Hand mixer. You can get away with using a whisk for most of what this calls for but that's a shite ton of whisking sometimes.
(optional) Rice cooker. If you do get one, make sure it doubles as a steamer. Also, don't spend a fortune on these. A good one isn't expensive. I bought a decent one for $10, just as a point.
Pots & Pans
Larger size pot for soups or even stock with a lid.
Medium size pot
Smaller pot. For these three, make sure they nest to save space.
Large pan that can also double as a sauce pan. Make sure this pan can also use the large pot's lid. Trust me.
Medium pan that is the same size to share the medium pot lid.
Small "skillet" pan that is the same size as the pot to share the lid.
Three lids that fit those pots & pans so you don't need six different lids.
Baking
I prefer either ceramic and/or cast iron bakeware because you can move it from the oven to the table and it still looks presentable. The nice part about cast iron is that you can also take it camping and throw it back into the kitchen and it looks nice too. Also, less to clean after... and less space in the cupboard, except for cake pans but unless you're cooking a shite ton of cakes and decorating them too... not really necessary. If you are, then you already know what you need here, lol.
9in square pan.
12in rectangle pan
9in round pan
Mixing bowls: One large and one smaller one (that is ideally larger than what you eat out of otherwise there's no point to having the smaller bowl, lol!). Make sure they nest to save space.
dutch oven with lid... actually, it could be argued here that technically all you need is the dutch oven and if it's cast iron you'll need nothing else whether in the kitchen or to take camping.
Cookie sheet
(optional) muffin pan for making cupcakes or muffins.
Knives
Chef's knife
Cleaver
Serrated knife (aka: bread knife)
Paring knife
Basic Cooking Utensils
2 rubber spatulas
Tongs
Kitchen scissors
Colander (aka: the Strainer)
A good cutting board... the biggest you can feasibly use in your kitchen. Going small here will not help you but you still have enough room to work around it a bit. Alternatively, just use it as your work surface if you buy a big enough board. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that but make sure you clean it very well especially if you cook with meat, sometimes even take breaks while cooking to clean it in between tasks. Never cross contaminate between uncooked meat and cooked food... ever.
Can opener
A wooden spoon or two. Not to many of these though.
A good whisk
Cheese grater
Soup ladle
Noodle/slotted spoon
Measuring
one set of measuring spoons
one measuring cup... maybe two. If you get two, I suggest a 2-cup measuring cup and a 1-cup measuring cup.
(optional) "dry" measuring scoops/cups. They often match the measuring spoons but they aren't strictly necessary but like the measuring spoons they should nest together to save space.
Eating & Serving utensils
Get enough of these so that you have enough to eat with but also so any guests have them too. I find a set of 6 more than enough unless you have a partner and kids.
Forks - large and small
Butter knives
Spoons - large and small
Steak knives
For serving food, you still kind of what to avoid cross contamination. Some people don't like mixing their food because perhaps of texture or taste. Having things to serve with helps with this.
2 larger serving spoons (sometimes called baking spoons) that still fit in the regular silverware drawer.
a larger serving fork (that still fits neatly into the silverware drawer)
Dishes, Cups, Glasses, etc.
Like the silverware, get enough to eat with and for any unexpected (or even expected) guests. You don't need a 12 piece service, though.... unless you do and then you already know what you need, lol. Most households only need six of each of these. My personal advice is to not mix and match the set. It isn't for show or looks, but a matched set nests and takes up less space in a cupboard and are easier to clean.
Dinner plates, and these don't have to be huge. Big plates, unless you're over 6ft and 200lbs and are very physically active, are actually almost too much food on a plate for a typical person. 8in from one side to the other is a large enough plate in most cases.
Smaller "dessert"/sandwich plates.
Cereal/soup bowls.
Cups & glasses
... and that's it. If you bought the baking ware that goes from kitchen to table, there's no need to move food from the cooking pan to a different bowl/plate to serve. You just eliminated half of what's in most people's kitchens. Pick the right dish set and you also don't need a second "fancy" dish set... unless you really want this. Some do but it's not necessary.
Food storage/containers
If it's a dry good, store it in a sealing/unbreakable container. These come in multiple sizes. I'll make another post about what goes in your pantry and how to store it later.
Don't go crazy with plastic containers for leftovers. Just keep what you think you will use for your work lunch and maybe two others for leftovers.
What about coffee and/or tea?
This is a matter of personal preferance. If you drink either, then of course think about a coffee maker and/or kettle and add that to your list of what goes in your kitchen. If you don't, don't feel obligated to buy it.
How to store it all
Except for the fridge, stove, and (if you bought one) microwave oven, what I do is store everything in a cupboard or a drawer. This comes from living on the boat but even off of the boat and in a house means the counters are BARE. Zero clutter... which is nice.
The reason I got into this habit is because a boat moves. It rocks, it rolls... if you leave anything out in the open that's going to slide around or even fall to the floor and break.
Now, though, it makes for a tidier kitchen. The small appliances go under the counter. Same with pots, pans, baking bowls, and the baking ware, the cheese grater, and colander.
Most kitchens have at least two drawers. One drawer can store the eating utensils and the serving utensils (that's why I suggest making sure these matched and fit in with the silverware) to save space. Store the steak knives and kitchen scissors here too. In the second drawer, in what's called a knife dock, store your sharp knives. Beside them you can fit the rest of your flatter utensils. If you have a third drawer (most kitchens do), store the larger items on their own, including the immersion blender. A bottom drawer, if one exists, can be for the storage containers because usually this drawer is a deeper drawer. Failing that, pick a cupboard by where you'll have your plates, cups, etc.
Do not, whatever you do, keep your knives in the knife block. It's actually the worst place to keep them because of dust, germs, etc and you can't clean it. If you really can't see yourself keeping them in a drawer, get a magnetic strip and mount this to the wall by your stove and keep them on the magnetic strip. Even a drawer knife dock can be cleaned far easier than those blocks can be. I tend to not do this because of the habit ingrained from living on the boat. Yes, even magnetic knife storage isn't advisable.
If you're particularly lucky to have a spot to keep a microwave in a cupboard built for it, do it. Store the chopping block beside the pots and pans, vertically up against the wall of the cupboard just inside. Keep the toaster clean and free of crumbs (they do come apart on the bottom to help with this!) and store in a cupboard with the small appliances. Most people leave their coffee maker out. I don't... and in fact I don't even have an electric coffee maker because... boat. What I do have is one of those "pour over" coffee makers and a stove top kettle for boiling water. My kitchen and dining room look bare but the sailor in me twitches if anything is left out.
Why is this a "FAQ" in your life?
I think it's because it is so bare and I cook so much that people expect someone my age and with what I cook to have all the gizmos and doodads and whatsits and are shook when they realize I don't have as much as they thought I would.
I do have some extras now that I didn't before. I like to bake (understatement of the century) so I do have more baking stuff and one more appliance not listed here.
In addition to this (COMPLETELY OPTIONAL) I do have a base that has attachments for a stand up mixer (and bowl), blender, and food processor and a bread maker. I also have a few more baking bowls. I have two large stainless steel mixing bowls, a very large ceramic "proofing" bowl for bread, two middle size ceramic mixing bowls that probably count as large in a normal house, and three small mixing bowls and one of those is stainless steel. I also have more cake pans, but not as many as you'd think. I have two 9in steel round pans, a 9in square steel pan, and two muffin pans for normal size cupcake/muffins that cook a dozen cupcakes plus a mini cupcake pan. I also have two flat cookie sheets and two pizza pans. I also have a full cake decorating kit with specialty spatulas and a cupcake storage container for both minis and normal size ones and a cake container for a layer cake.
Does the normal person need that? No. But some people like painting, and other hobbies. I just happen to like cakes and making bread. A lot... which probably explains why I look more like Dulia-Chai than my character, lol.
I also think people ask me for advice when it comes to running a house and domestic things because I grew up being in charge of my house and having to at least try to have it together. I grew up in an era and place in rural North America (and a farm) where that was the woman's job and it was expected. Also, when I went to school home economics was necessary to learn for three years starting in grade seven.
I bucked most of the traditional roles, but part of me also likes eating better and not spending a fortune so I paid attention to my grandmother and mother on this one. From what I'm seeing and because I get asked this a lot from those who were raised more in a city and/or wasn't taught because home economics isn't even taught in school anymore and I was one of the last to have experienced that.

Mostly posting this so ppl can keep an eye out in their cities for sales like this (this was at the end of the two day sale and items when from individually priced to fill-a-box, except for the suitcase and dollhouse which were half price, so your mileage may vary.) And there were tons of nice things I don’t currently have storage room for like set of ramekins, more plates & bowls & wineglass sets etc & more appliances i just couldn’t buy right now. But holy shit…I’m flabbergasted, this is a huge leg up for me

Crispy, Sticky Korean Chicken
Tumblr media
I saw this video at the beginning of December and couldn’t stop thinking about the gochujang chicken bit (start at the halfway point for this one but tbh you’re going to want to make all of them anyway).
I’ve since made double quantities of my version of it twice and I still can’t stop thinking about it. You will want to eat this every day istg, and the tasty part is all pantry stuff that lasts for ages so you’re ALWAYS READY.
I don’t have process pics but there’s a video up there! It looks like they sprinkle crushed almonds on the top at the end, but that’s a bit spendy so sesame seeds are my sprinkle of choice. Obv you can fry it like in the video but I air fried mine because I hate standing there frying stuff. And maybe it’s lower fat, I dunno, hard to tell when I’ve sprayed oil all over the air fryer.
Tumblr media
Basically, what I do is:
a) use two big packets of boneless, skinless thighs, since you’re going to want to eat this at least three times once you’ve made it and it reheats really well, and chop them quite little so it’s Extra Crispy like popcorn chicken. Toss them in flour.
b) Air fry the chicken in batches, I use the Instant Pot with the air-fryer lid. The trick to them not sticking is to oil spray the frying tray/basket thing quite well and pre-heat the air fryer by turning it on empty until it’s up to heat. I know, revolutionary. Honestly when I realised that doing that stopped nugs and fish fingers sticking my life was changed.
I put some of the fried chicken aside for the kids since the sauce for this one is spicy. They had it with Heinz curry sauce because it tastes a bit like Japanese curry. Next time I’m going to try doing a batch without gochujang then adding it to the pan once theirs is done. I’ll update here once I do!
c) The sauce is gochujang, sugar (I’ve used stevia and I’m going to try it with honey too), ketchup, garlic and soy sauce, with some water added so it makes a nice layer in the pan.
d) Chuck the chicken in the bubbling sauce as it finishes cooking and make sure it’s all coated and sticky, then make a huge bloody pile of it. Then try not to eat all of it at once because you will want to. We’ve had it with rice, noodles, with stir-fry leftovers, on ramen, on its own and in lettuce wraps with kimchi, all of which were perfect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s it, just make it.
