Sean flashed that cheeky grin of his. “Arthur started it.”

Enemies and Neighbours by Ian Black - very topical. A well-balanced, objective history of the Israel-Palestine conflict. There's a reason its the most complex conflict in the world; because the history is so complex.

Rebel Hearts by Kevin Toolis - the best book on the Troubles in northern Ireland that i've read. Told in five stories; it makes the human elements come alive. Fantastic investigative journalism.

Currently Craving: Adventure! Got a bit of adventure coming up, I will be MIA trekking for three weeks and cannot wait to be in the mountains.

so i finished the show the other night and my sentiments from the first episode pretty much stayed the same: there was a lot i liked, there was also a lot i disliked. major spoilers will be under the cut, but what i can say is that from an aesthetic viewpoint it’s a very, very beautiful show! lots of wide landscape shots, interesting camera angles, great costumes (btw there’s an interesting article about the costumes here). i also loved the way the flashbacks were edited – extremely desaturated colors, except for red. i know that sounds a lot like the editing of myspace selfies in 2012, but it genuinely looked good on the show :D

plotwise it felt very dense, which makes sense considering it’s only 7 episodes. it never felt rushed, though, and i especially liked how the main romance was built up reeeaally slowly, it felt very genuine and wholesome (the whole situation on alice's homestead did! i could have easily watched two episodes of just roy and truckee hanging out). i think they could have easily stretched the show to 8 episodes, the last one especially was a bit packed. over the course of the show, a lot of parallels to rdr2 appeared, and i could actually see a lot of dutch in the main antagonist.

most characters were great, although some felt a bit flat. unfortunately the main cast was far from diverse. there would have been an easy way to change that (see spoilery section), but the writers simply said "no❤" for some reason. mary agnes, truckee and iyovi especially were an absolute delight though, and i found myself surprisingly rooting for bill (actually, not that surprising – show me a lonely man with sad brown eyes and my last two brain cells log off immediately lol). i already said about the first episode that the women of La Belle were pushed a bit to the margins and sadly that didn’t really change. i would have loved to see more of them.

oh and omg, the soundtrack is so, so good!!

spoilers ahead!

that being said, i HATE what they did to the town of Blackdom. slaughtering the whole community like this, and for what? it was stupid and pointless and made me genuinely angry. if it had happened earlier than in the last episode, i would have probably stopped watching then and there. at this point it was already well-established that griffin’s gang is ~evil~, there was zero need to further prove that. the only reason i can imagine is that the final shootout at La Belle would have been over too quick, had the people of Blackdom decided to help them. but yeah, there was a lot of potential wasted here (and a lot of foreahdowing simply thrown out of the window - why??), and that left a really bitter taste and kind of ruined the show for me.

and a very minor complaint compared to that, but i didn’t really like how it was implied that bill and alice ended up together in the end? she never showed the slightest bit of interest toward him, and the way it was framed made it seem like she ‘owed’ him for saving her all those years ago. hm.

so yeah, mixed feelings, but overall a solid and very pretty show!

So let's start with my personal favourite, Mission: Ineffable:

The bag over his head was itchy and thick, but that wasn’t the worst of it. The barrel of a gun was pressed into his temple, but that wasn’t the worst of it, either. No, the worst of it was knowing that if this didn’t pay off, he had no other ideas left to try. “I thought I was going to see J?” he tried.  “Perhaps I misunderstood.” A pause, and the bag was lifted with unforgiving speed.  He blinked, letting his eyes adjust to sudden daylight.  The glare resolved into a figure dressed in black, draped over the seat and arm of a wingback chair like a discarded scarf.  Long lines of arms and legs in studied relaxation, except for the chin propped forward onto a hand, and the unreal focus of a pair of – Aziraphale blinked again – bright golden eyes, framed by a tousled auburn bob.  This had to be J.  Good Lord. “Who are you and what are you doing here?” To the point, then.  “Ah, hello.  I need one point five million dollars.”

From my Regency human AU, Morningstar Abbey:

The General found his anger once again.  “Then you may leave, sir; the hospitality of my house is withdrawn from you.  I will not have Anthony wasting his time on someone so beneath him.  The carriage will be waiting for you in an hour to take you as far as Oxford; you may find your own way home from there.” The shock, the disappointment, the offence warred in Aziraphale’s breast as he heard Crowley and Adam both exclaim at their father, with entreaties and curses.  There was no purpose to fighting this moment; he had dared to harbour a fragile bud of hope that something might be done, that he might at least get to stay until the New Year, but this was only confirmation of what he had already known; the General would never accept this match.  He summoned his dignity against the storm of emotion and took two steps towards the General, who was glaring at him, ignoring the rushed words of his sons. Aziraphale pulled himself to his full height.  “I would not stay another minute if you begged me.”  The door slammed heavy behind him.

And from my latest, The Serpent of the Loch:

His mind wandered briefly to that easily-offended nemesis, with his dignified huffs of disapproval, and his rather less dignified flouncing.  Crowley’s mind had been wandering in that direction quite a bit lately.  It was the greenery, he was sure; that and the free time to sit and philosophise about Good and Evil.  It was just so much more interesting to do that with the angel around to argue with him.  Argue, and share a drink, and maybe even, by the end of the night, a smile.

Last Line Tag: Blackwater

Time could be measured by the cases piling up on his desk, growing higher and higher as the days bled into weeks. Never one to shirk his responsibilities, Arthur did the work but according to Tilly without the same heart. Maybe that’s why he couldn’t keep up. How could he care though about philandering husbands, stolen heirlooms, blackmail, or anything that crawled out of the darkest corners of the city when John, Abigail, and Jack were missing? Over a month had gone by and they had vanished from the headlines too but Arthur kept at it, chasing every lead that came his way. Hosea’s unwavering confidence that Dutch would, in fact, return had him desperate to find something, anything that would send him in the right direction before their inevitable clash. It was all dead ends and dashed hopes though and Arthur left standing there covered in the mud of his own spinning wheels.
