Ranting time

So weird how Anakin is always seen as hating women in the fandom when literally the people he respects and love the most are all the women in his life: Shmi, Padmé and Ahsoka. Even with the other female Jedi, Anakin obviously respected them and never tried to cross them like look at his friendship with Aayla in legends, he was friendly with Adi Gallia and Shaak Ti. Even though he didn’t agreed with Luminara’s methods he never tried to put her down. With Yaddle’s death in legends he was heartbroken and guilt ridden. It’s obvious Shmi raised him to respect women.

But you could argue Anakin had his worst issues with the male figures in his life (besides the clones of course). But that is a topic for another post.

So i was thinking about the ahsoka show (again) and it reminded me of the AMAZING costumes in the Star wars movies.

Luminara Unduli’s markings, skin color and outfit is beautiful and perfect.

Shaak Ti’s lekku and Montrals are as big as they should be, and her skin color and the phenotypes on her face are done amazingly.

Plo Koon is just perfect. like, how do you even do that?? its so good.

Adi Gallia’s skullcaps are perfect. Done so well and the casting is good too ngl

I'm thinking about the Jedi and Anakin, like you do, and it just cracks me up so much to see any variation of 'they always looked at him with suspicion, like they were waiting for him to mess up.'

Sure, in TPM they're unsure about him because Qui-Gon is dropping a nine year old with a lot of previous issues onto their laps and telling them they really should give him a laser sword and train him in the ways of the supernatural universe bending empathic powers that let you blow things up with your mind and that go haywire if you're emotionally unbalanced. Nobody's thrilled about the prospect.

But after that, honestly, the only Jedi who can ever be said to look at Anakin somewhat like that is Mace, which can be forgiven because 1) the man is Stressed and the people he doesn't expect to mess up are far and few in between, and 2) he and Anakin still have a rather cordial relationship overall, even if they aren't bffs.

But Luminara? Constantly smiles at Anakin. Jocasta? Same. Aayla? Calls him Master Skywalker (respectful, considering they're the same rank in the Order, if maybe not in the Army), is very caring and nice to him. Shaak Ti? Never changes that soft expression of hers. Adi? Big smirk when he shows off, like "aw, would you look at this kid." Plo? You can't even tell how he looks at people. Kit? Biggest grin. Even Piell? He's a grumpy bastard but he's not judgmental. Ki-Adi? Yeah, I guess it does happen once in a while - but he does it with Yoda as well they think he might be under attack from the Dark Side, so really it's him having a suspicious nature, not him targeting Anakin specifically. Seriously, Obi-Wan is more critical of Anakin than Ki-Adi is, and Obi-Wan has an Anakin-shaped blind spot in his soul.

Speaking of Obi-Wan - when he leaves for Utapau in RotS, he has the sparkly eyes of someone so overflowing with love that the gravitational pull of his affection for Anakin is warping the very light around them both.

Jedi freaking like Anakin is what I'm saying.

This section was one of my favorites and one of the reasons I fell in love with this novel, because it's such a great example of walking the fine line the Republic was asking of the Jedi and how, through seemingly innocuous but constant requests for the Jedi to step just a little outside their purpose. They're there to help negotiate peaceful resolutions that the people of the galaxy have, whatever that situation might call for. There's unrest in a local strike that might turn dangers, okay, the Jedi can go help negotiate. Oh, no, we just want you to be security because the government is refusing to negotiate. That's not our job. Oh, no, we don't actually mean corporate security, just a quick visit would keep people from getting hurt. Maybe just stage a training mission there, you do that a lot, don't you? Then it's on to, well, you don't want to be rude and refuse this gift and help spread the good works of the Republic, right? You can see how it would help the galaxy to get the word out, yes? You see that it's a death of a thousand cuts situation where the Jedi are desperately trying to maintain their purpose but real lives and real work are being leveraged against them and they're asked again and again and again to do something that would flatten who they are, because those real people do need help. And they do refuse to endorse a product! They do refuse to actually wear the boots! But that's not going to be the end of the requests, this is just one drop in an ocean requests, which the Jedi can't just say, nah, we're going to separate ourselves from the Republic, because the people behind those requests genuinely need help. Maybe not the boots request, but the people of Chamble could certainly use the help. It's putting the Jedi under a tremendous strain--some of the requests are easy to say no to, but they still have to have a conversation about why not and it's like none of that penetrates the people making the requests, because they'll turn around and make the exact same one, please be our police force (we're not police), please be our corporate security (we're not corporate security), please represent our merch deal (we're not influencers). Every. Single. Day. They can't just walk away because then they're also walking away from the people who need them, the good we see them do in this very book, but also we see the constant attempts to chip away at who the Jedi are, despite how hard they work to maintain it and like. That's it, that's the story there! Good people who are still human, who can still be worn down when the galaxy fails to meet them in good faith about who they are and what they actually do.

What a question to strike right at my tendency to go for Mace whenever Obi-Wan isn't available lmao

I think there's something really interesting in fics about Dooku not Falling, and since he's still a Jedi, taking over for Qui-Gon when it comes to Anakin, sort of in pursuit of making up for his failures with Komari, maybe? Also just sort of playing into "adopted by the grandparents after Dad dies" type of thing, for all that Anakin only knew Qui-Gon for a week or two. It also provides some really cool opportunities for Obi-Wan to stay involved and in contact with Anakin, while building bridges with someone who knew a completely different side of Qui-Gon than Obi-Wan himself did.

A similar argument would work for having Anakin taken in by Feemor.

I'm open to AUs where Anakin is taught by Plo or Kit, but I don't think they necessarily open up a wide range of opportunities that I would personally want to explore as a writer.

Adi Gallia, maybe? She stands out as a good, interesting option. She's very specifically a political Jedi, way more involved in the Senate than most. I think learning under her would put Anakin in a position to become much more versed in political structure and bureaucracy and logistics than with Obi-Wan, who was more generally a diplomat and negotiator (treaties) than a political expert (working within a system). It would put Anakin closer to Palpatine, in terms of place and duration, while also making him much harder to manipulate, and I think there's a lot of opportunity with that. (This could also be said of Dooku, probably.)
