#Act of Succession

Text
The Queen was also acutely aware of her vulnerability on the international stage. According to the leaders of Catholic Europe, she was not the rightful ruler of England, but the bastard child of an invalid union that had subsequently been recognised as such by her own father. (Although Henry VIII named Elizabeth in the 1544 Act of Succession, and in his last will, he never formally repealed the Act of 1536 that had declared her illegitimate.)

shiv was not being altruistic nor intellectually self-interested when she voted against kendall. that was pure raw visceral desperation to maintain some semblance of dignity that she felt kendall being ceo would shred her of. sometimes people do not act in other people’s best interests or their own best interests. sometimes people do the wrong thing for the wrong reasons just because it feels like the right, the only, thing to do. shiv could not let kendall be ceo. she just couldn’t. not because she wanted to sacrifice herself to “stop the cycle,” not because she made a calculation and decided tom was her best interest — because the thought of kendall being ceo and acting like That the rest of their lives when shiv earned that job, she fucking earned it, that was too much to fucking bear. watching him sit in dad’s chair, conduct that vote, grin with entitlement and cockiness and certainty — seeing that elicited a visceral painful all-consuming sensation not dissimilar to overwhelming nausea that, summed up in two words, would simply be: fuck. no. she couldn’t live with that. she just couldn’t. it’s not kind. it’s not smart. it’s just human. painfully, destructively human. because sometimes, that’s all there is to it. not just for shiv, but for everyone. god knows roman and kendall have had those same feelings, made those same self-destructing yet necessary-feeling decisions throughout the show. why does it have to be different for shiv? why can’t she be painfully destructively human, prone to impulsive ill-conceived viscerally felt actions, like everyone else? why are we incapable of allotting her the same nuance and humanity (the good and the bad), the same trauma-informed self-destructive life-ruining hamartias, as we do her brothers? why can’t we fit a whole woman in our heads?

There's just something about the earnestness and commitment to the inherent silliness of acting when it comes to Jeremy Strong...

nothing you ever see about succession will prepare you for the way jeremy strong’s acting will gradually then irrevocably grab hold of your heart and soul and evoke emotions in you that you didn’t even know were there

It's kind of funny that Kendall and Shiv are both equally delusional about their ability to charm people for business and somehow think they can do it even though they choke almost every single time, whereas it's like the one thing Roman is consistently good at despite being the "least legitimate" option.
I think part of this comes down to the fact that Shiv and Kendall both have very clear ideas of the versions of themselves they're trying to be and the images they're trying to project, and they're trying so hard to be seen that way that they end up coming off as a little desperate and off-putting. Meanwhile Roman "knows" that there's something wrong with him and he's worthless, so he doesn't get sucked into the trap of trying to force people to see his idea of himself and instead molds himself into whatever he thinks the other person wants from him because that's the only way he can compensate for "being him," which works very well in the short term but also means he's the least capable of maintaining any relationship for very long because he has no sense of self.

Also like. This idea that romcoms are some uniquely feminine form of entertainment made by and for women, when >90% of romcoms and basically 100% of the most famous/successful ones are made by men and are about how women MUST have a man to be fulfilled in their lives and relentlessly and creepily pursuing women will ultimately be rewarded in the end because eventually she'll "give in"... stop it!

i think there's an interesting connective thread between sarah snook saying she thinks shiv just reads whatever's currently popular and got people talking ("everyone's reading this? all right, fine."), and alan ruck saying he thinks connor only reads books that are very old and considered classics - that way he doesn't have to decide if it has literary merit, because everyone else has already decided it's a seminal work. like, it takes them in the opposite direction when looking for materials, but in both cases they're being driven by a desire to not have to have original artistic tastes or opinions and just defer to someone else's judgements. which is just so telling?
shiv can be a bit of a black sheep politically, but she arrived there by just trying to define herself in opposition to her family; it's an indirect way of having someone else decide for you to keep trying to do the opposite of what's expected. it requires little in the way of genuine beliefs, which is why she flips very easily when it's convenient. connor meanwhile just wants any scrap of attention he can get, which is why he brings up random trivia or collects bizarre historical items. he likes to be able to just say or have something that gets people's attention, without having to provide any real explanation or show understanding. and i think it's interesting how that carries over into things like entertainment or art - the lack of self conception makes it hard to do things like pick up a random book you've never heard of because it looks interesting.
