When Someone Flirts with You! | Honkai Star Rail

Someone saw this coming and I'm very proud of you for figuring it out. Yeah, I've been getting into star rail and I thought I'd just write since I can't really think of genshin things to write right now lol this is barely edited, so have mercy <3 idk tags rn so please help me out :') ✧ Includes: Dan Heng, Welt, Sampo, Gepard, Jing Yuan, Luocha, Blade ✧ Extra: Luocha and Blade might be ooc, I'm not too familiar with them as of right now. ✧ Come one, come all! See what happens when someone flirts with you in front of your men!

Dan Heng

Dan Heng is a really private person, he’s not a fan of showing off everything. So he’s not one to flaunt you around, but it’s not hard to tell you’re both in a relationship. He’s around you like… all the time.

He’s not one to follow around like a helicopter boyfriend, but he’s got an eye on you. If he sees someone bothering you, he’s behind them in an instant.

0/10. Dan Heng’s not super scary so they could ignore him and continue flirting with you. For a moment, he’ll just stand there as he listens to some of the dumb things they’re gonna say. You two make fun of them later for it. But then he hears something along the lines of, “come on, i’ll treat you better.” he don’t like that. 

How is this creep better than him?! They couldn’t even tell you were uncomfortable. Dan Heng will usually place a hand on their shoulder and his grip gets tighter every second the creep is still in front of you. Paired with his glare…

10/10 the creep is gone. You sigh in relief and walk to Dan Heng quietly, wrapping your arms around his waist. He immediately hugs back, stroking your hair a little.

“Let’s go somewhere else. I don’t like it here anymore.” You agreed.

Welt

Well, he doesn’t hang around you 24/7, he’s a busy man. But it’s also not hard to tell you’re dating either. Welt isn’t crazy about PDA, but he’ll give you a quick kiss every now and then and often gives you hugs (per your request).

He believes you’re capable of taking care of yourself, so he’s often not paying attention. That doesn’t mean he won’t look over at you every now and then. This time, he just happened to see some creepy creep trying to creep up on you. 

“Are you ok, (y/n)?” Is the first thing he asks when he walks up to you. He will literally ignore the existence of the creep beside him. Usually what happens here is that you’ll nod and he’ll “accidentally” shove the creepy away and urge you to come talk with him and his friends. The creep is usually so confused they walk away. But sometimes- sometimes- they follow.

Welt does NOT like that. I mean it was one thing to not take the hint from your face, but then to stop you when you’re actively trying to leave?

Welt will turn around and just glare at them. Like that silent, “I will kill you” kinda glare. It’s a staring contest for a moment before the creepy creep just kinda turns away and leaves. Sometimes, Welt does have to smack them with his lil cane. Sometimes.

“Anyway, we’re over here. Would you like a drink?”

Sampo

Sampo is all over you, usually. He loves you and the world should know? Sometimes, he can go too far so just let him know. Anyway, since he’s always over you, people know you’re dating him.

Usually at parties and events, he’s hanging off your arm, but sometimes he’s gotta go talk to some of his other friends and acquaintances. He keeps an eye on you.

Here’s the thing, he’ll come up and flirt with you too but try to one up the creep. “You look fine, darling,” - the creep. “You look so beautiful, every star in the sky and the moons pale in comparison.” - Sampo.

0/10. Of course, the creep gets irritated and asks what the hell Sampo is doing. Sampo just gives him a condescending smile and says, “that’s my partner you’re talking to. I’m not gonna let you just creep up on them.” There’s… a glint in his eyes that’s unnerving. Even you can see it.

69/10. The creep runs off, making some excuse or whatever. Sampo watches them for a minute before turning to you and smiling. You rush to give him a hug and he happily returns it.

“Wanna go home? Seems like that idiot trashed your mood a little.”

Gepard

Gepard is a very shy guy and he’s not one to be all touchy-touchy without you doing it first. He gets all flustered and looks away… but he’ll lean into your touch.

He usually sticks around you, keeping your attention so no creepies come by, but sometimes he gets pulled away. He always lets you know he’ll be right back and leaves for just a few moments. Enough for a creepy to sneak in >:0

When Gepard notices the creep, he wastes no time walking over to you. “Is everything ok?” He asked, looking at you. If you shook your head, that was it. The captain of the silvermane’s came out!

The first glare is usually a 50/50. Sometimes, the creeps acted all annoyed and walk away, pretending they’re not scared but other times… they challenge him. Gepard just places a hand on their shoulder and shoves them back. It’s actually surprisingly strong- they’ll fall over sometimes.

10/10, that usually sends them running. On rare occasions there’s that ONE creepy who just stands up and tries to take him on lmao. You know to take a step back because Gepard kinda skips the arresting and just goes to ass kicking. And he’s the shy boyfriend.

“So… we should go now. Yeah, no, just leave the creep there.”

Jing Yuan

Jing Yuan isn't the most affectionate boyfriend, but he doesn’t mind letting people know you two are together. Depends on your comfort level.

He’s a busy man, so at that fancy event, he can’t always be at your side but he tries to keep you by him. Of course, you decided to go get a drink, he happily agreed. You went off and he kept greeting more officials. You didn’t return, so he looked over and he just saw you turning away from a creep who just grabbed your arm!

Jing Yuan elegantly excuses himself and basically sneaks up behind the guy. He’ll stand there which brings you tons of relief, enough to let the creep ramble and ramble and ramble. “I could take you out to dinner, (nickname you don’t like). I’ll buy you (food you don’t like).” “Actually, they don’t like that. And they don’t like being called that.” The creep jumps away and is standing beside you at that point.

5/10, honestly, some just get scared and leave. There’s the other half though that just kinda scoff and look at you. Before they can even say anything, Jing Yuan grabs them by the shirt and force them to look at him. “Do not speak to them like that. Do not look at them, and don’t even think about them. You leave now or I’ll drag you out myself.”

10/10!!!!!!!!! They are GONE. No sign of them for MILES. Jing Yuan huffs and looks down at you. At this point, everyone’s looking at you two, making you extremely uncomfortable. He’ll stand beside you and pull you close, using that half of his jacket thing to cover you.

“We can leave. I’ll deal with everything else later. Come on.”

Luocha

This man is unpredictable. Sometimes, he’s grabbing your hand to prove your dating, others are just a straight kiss. You don’t mind. Either way, the world knows you two are together.

Luocha doesn’t mind leaving you alone, he’s got confidence in himself and you. That doesn’t mean he’s not there as your backup. Creeps creep on a daily- he’s gotchu. He sees the creep and he’s already walking toward you.

“No!” You exclaimed with a frown, “I'm not interested. Leave me alone.” Luocha didn’t mind scaring the creep off… but it was when they grabbed you that kinda set him off. “Hey.” Is all he says as he grabs their wrist to shove their hand away. 3/10. SOMETIMES people do get scared off by his demeanor. But there’s always that one. Our favorite.

For those guys, he’ll just get physical. There’s just this switch that goes off when it comes to you. 10/10. They’re either gone or out like a light.

“Come, we should go somewhere else.”

Blade

Lol. First of all, people know you’re dating this dude because you’re still alive while hanging off his arm. He’s not affectionate in public other than some sweet words. “You look nice today.” “I think you did well.” Things like that.

Blade can… be a helicopter boyfriend because he just has a 6th sense for creepies. You can be doing your own thing and he’s just standing there. Menacingly. There are days where he’s away from you, but he keeps a sharp eye on you. Then he notices the creep.

“Go away.” You say with a huff as you turn away. “Stop!” You yell, trying to pull your hand away. Suddenly, the creep is silent and frozen. You probably know exactly what happened.

You feel your arm come loose and look behind you to see Blade pointing… well his blade at the creep. He doesn’t say anything and the creep can’t help but just feel the icy fear in their veins. 10/10, Blade doesn’t fail.

“Thank you.” You say with a sigh as you run and hug his arm, looking up at him. Blade sighs and looks down at you, feeling that relief in his chest knowing that you’re fine and right beside him where you should be.

“It’s because you look cute today. Let’s go somewhere else.”

would steve ever insist that eddie comes to basketball games with him just so they have an excuse to get those good seats right at the court that famous people and celebrities usually get?

Eddie is not Steve’s go-to person if he wants basketball tickets.

He goes to Lucas because every doctor knows a doctor that knows someone with season tickets they never use. And also, Steve kinda wants to go to the game with someone who, you know, will actually enjoy being there.

Eddie’s undying hatred of all things sports is, well…undying.

But Steve’s been a Pacers’ fan since the first time his dad shoved a basketball in his hands and taught him how to shoot. He has watched them lose in the playoffs every year that they make it to it, but he’s convinced. 2014 was going to be different.

He just can’t get tickets. He spent all day trying to buy them online and failed, and all the resale tickets are for seats that suck or way over his paygrade. Him and Eddie pay for their own hobbies out of their separate bank accounts, and Steve can’t afford the absolutely ridiculous price that’s being asked so…

“Please?” Steve asked, big puppy eyes and adorable little pout. He knew what he was doing and so did Eddie. “Pretty please? I never ask you for anything, Ed…Okay, fine, except for all the stuff I ask you for, but this is different. It’s a small price to pay to see my team win.”

“Your team that has literally never won in the history of all time?”

“How many championships does Leg-less the loser elf have?” Steve asked.

“…It’s Legolas,” Eddie said. “And he was a part of the fellowship that kinda saved the world.”

“So was I,” Steve pointed out. “And I deserve this.”

Steve didn’t ask for courtside seats. He didn’t ask to be sat among the rich and famous. Hell, he didn’t even ask Eddie to go with him. He just wanted to see if Eddie had a connection that could get him a ticket for a seat that wasn’t in the nosebleeds.

Steve doesn’t really believe that the tickets Eddie showed him are real until they are sitting in their seats – their seats that are courtside and five feet away from Paul George warming up. Steve is so excited to be there that he pretty much misses Eddie shaking someone’s hand right in front of him until he’s nudged in the shoulder, “Babe, you know, Sandy, right?”

“Yeah, totally,” Steve says absently, sparing a glance in the direction Eddie was gesturing before looking back out at the court. It takes him a second for his brain to register who he was just looking at and then, “Holy shit, you’re Sandra Bullock.”

She is just as beautiful and as nice as Steve has always thought she was, and she’s amused by him which makes Steve blush. She holds out her hand to him, “And you are…”

“I’m…” Steve trails off, only picking back up his train of thought when Eddie laughs loudly beside him. “Steve. I’m Steve. Uh, Harrington. Eddie’s – I’m – we’re together, by law.”

“We’re married,” Eddie grinned, throwing his arm over Steve’s shoulder, and wiggling his wedding ring at her. “Still working on how to tell people, obviously.”

She congratulates them and talks to them a bit about the game (bring Steve out of his starstruck stupor), and even buys them champagne as a late little wedding gift. It’s a blast.

Eddie spends half the game flinching every time the ball bounces a little too close or a player nearly ends up in their lap, but Steve is loving all of it. The other half of the time, Eddie is having Steve explain what’s going on and who the players are, or he’s talking to the guy next to him.

It’s some square jawed model type that Steve doesn’t recognize and also, doesn’t like. He’s a little too friendly with his husband, especially when he curled a piece of Eddie’s hair around his finger. When the two of them end up on the kiss cam together, Eddie doesn’t even get a chance to register it before Steve pulls him nearly out of the camera frame and kisses him.

Later, fans will make jokes about the pictures of that night because it’s very clear that Steve and Eddie switched seats.

II. You Give Me Butterflies

summary: hotel rooms are becoming commonplace with the pair, however, getting to know each other at such a pace leads Nashae to tell Leati how she really feels about him touching her.

Coco sat in her home studio avoiding the eyes of her team of producers. She leaned forwards, her elbows resting on the desk space and her head in her hands. Her black hoodie was open, showing off a gift from Joe. The company that made the hoodie he gifted her, had a new maxi dress, and the fitted brown material molded to her skin. She knew he went above and beyond when her personal assistant remarked on how the item didn’t come out until the fall. Topped with the hoodie and tan sheepskin slippers, Coco was ready for bed more than she was for the studio. 

“Alright, what ideas do you have?” Gerrie, her main producetress, asked. “You said, new year, new ideas.” 

Though she kept to herself in the industry, her team was close and she trusted them, especially Gerrie. She had multiple songs where Gerrie’s heavy and soulful vocals were in the layering. It was rare the producer stepped up to the mic, but when she did, Coco was always grateful. There was something about the blend of their voices that always made Coco happy and excited to sing with Gerrie. However, when Gerrie was in her producer mode, she was all about keeping Coco moving forward with innovation and newness. 

“So, if I say I haven’t thought about it, would you all yell at me?” 

“No, but we’re side eyeing you girl.” Alicia, another close industry friend snickered. “We give you a damn deadline and you’ll drop a project ten minutes after agreeing to our plan.” 

Coco’s head shot up and she pursed her glossed lips. “That was one time and it worked!” 

Five years ago, Coco dropped her “self-titled” album, Yayha, on a Wednesday morning, with no promotion. This time she wanted a “self-titled” album, but with her real name attached to it. Everyone knew her as Yayha, when her fans were being funny they used Nashae. However, she hadn’t produced any music in her whole career where her real name was listed as the writer or producer. 

“I don’t want to do what I’ve already done,’ Coco hummed. 

Then it hit her. 

“I might not have thought about what the next project will be, but, there are some songs I have been creating and thinking about. It’s more pop based, though, however, I think I want to do small EP projects through out the year. Maybe four?” 

“Are we touring this?” Alicia asked. 

“Probably, but the tours would be small. Intimate. I’m not trying to go on a world tour right now.” 

“So, these four projects?” 

Coco opened up a document folder that had different songs saved. “I want to do a show four times. So, each set of songs get it’s own show.” 

“When do you want to start these?” Gerrie asked. She had her own notebook out and had begun jotting notes. 

“First show in March? Probably in Atlanta. The band, some dancers…’ 

“When are you going to drop the EP?” 

“Late February, the show is a surprise.” 

The creative juices began to flow. Ideas for stage, costumes, and all began to fill notebooks. She had already reached out to her choreographers and would bring them in for a meeting in a week. Coco felt her phone buzz and she saw Joe’s name and a text flash across her screen. 

Can you talk? 

Not at the moment, in the studio. 

You going to let me hear the new music? 

Maybe. 

“So you want to put out a new EP every three months?”

“Yeah,’ Coco replied. “After this year, I want to do a world tour and I mean, the world.” She put her phone down and faced her team.

She had plans of taking some time off to spend with her family. She felt like her career had taken her from them. She had nieces and nephews growing fast and she wanted to spend time with them. As well as her parents. 

“Well, we need to get started. Once you have a date, I will book the venue,’ Gerrie stood and gathered up her things. 

Alicia follow suit, already on the phone with the choreographers since Coco had given her a list of potential songs. The songs would be mixed, but they could get a gist of what the dancers should be doing. 

Jumping back into work, she knew this year was going to be crazy. Glancing down at her phone, she picked it up and sent Joe another text. His reply gave her butterflies. 

I’m always going to make time for my pretty girl. 

 January 11th, 2024, the night before Friday Night Smackdown

It was rare, but, when she could fly normally and under the radar she would. Having thwarted people by posting photos as if she was in another country, she booked the first flight that would take her to Lincoln, Nebraska. Grabbing her duffel bag, she slung it over her shoulder. It was a bit chilly when Coco stepped through the doors of the airport terminal. As soon as Joe said he would love for her to come to a show, she booked her flight ticket. It was a long flight of nervousness as they spent most of it talking. Her lips were still tingling from their last kiss and her dreams had been blessed with Joe and his mouth. 

She looked around and there he was, leaning against the hood of a Cadillac Escalade. Like her, he was in a mask and dark clothes, his hands folded in front of him. Even this far away, she could see his dark eyes had landed on her. 

Taking a deep breath she walked over, clutching the strap of her bag tightly. However, the closer she got to him, the bigger her smile grew behind her mask. Her feet shuffled a little faster until she was almost skipping into his arms. Those same thick arms she missed wrapped around her waist as she dropped her bag and fell into them. His head dropped to her shoulder, breathing in her scent while she wrapped her arms around his neck. 

His hands rubbed up and down her sides, pulling her as close as he could. 

“Wassup pretty girl,’ he whispered while pulling down her mask and his before sealing their lips in a kiss. 

He tried to pull back, but Coco grabbed his head and brought him back in for another kiss. He smiled against her lips.

“Na ou misia foi oe, Nashae.” (I missed you too, Nashae.)

“Ou te valaau atu ia te oe Leati?” (Do I get to call you Leati?) 

“As long as you are calling my name I don’t care.” He reached down and picked up her bag. “Come on, let’s get you warmed up.” 

She stepped aside as he opened up the passenger door for her. Behind her, on the backseat, he dropped her bag and slid into the driver seat before pulling off the curb. Lincoln night time wasn’t as vibrant as they bigger cities, but as they drove through downtown, the bars were full and music was blaring. Even on a Thursday night. 

“I hope I won’t be in the way or distracting,’ Nashae said, ‘I’m sure you need to focus.”

It was then he reached over and placed his hand on her thigh. His thumb rubbing small circles into the fabric of her jeans, but igniting a fire against her skin. He had saw them when she walked over, but the heels he’d gifted her for Christmas were on her feet. 

“Nah,’ he replied while turning onto another street, the hotel in the distance, ‘when you asked to come to work with me, I was more than happy to accommodate.”

“You hungry?” He asked, turning down the heat as she slipped out her jacket. 

“I could eat,’ she replied. 

He reached into the arm rest between them and pulled out a few restaurant menus. She flipped through them and settled on Whataburger, a place she hadn’t had in years due to her dieting for tours. He found the drive through and joined the line, glad to be able to focus a little more on the woman in his front seat. 

Before she could speak, Leati cupped the side of her head, tilted it to the side, and laid one of the nastiest of kisses he could manage on her lips. Her hand came up and gripped the back of his head, pulling him closer as she leaned into it. He tasted like mint and she was sure it was from his gum. Regardless, she sighed into his mouth before a soft moan filled the car from her. 

“Mmmhm,’ he spoke against her lips, ‘my pretty girl.” 

A honk behind them made them separate and Leati pulled forward to the speaker box. He ordered a few patty melts, she skipped on fries, and two shakes. 

“Why do you call me that," she asked around her straw. “I mean I like it! Just wondering….”

Leati pulled to the next window and paid for their order. The car rolled up slowly to the next window. Once he had their food, he headed towards the hotel. 

“I like the way you grin and get all shy on me when I say it. Your nose gets all scrunched up like a bunny.” 

He slung her bag over his shoulder after parking while she fitted her mask to her face. Her hair was in it’s natural state, and she pulled out the band holding it in the bun she flew in. Her curls caught him off guard and he reached out, tugging on one of the curls. 

“You know what I want to say,’ he teased and just as he said, her nose scrunched up and she looked away with a soft giggle. “But I will say you are beautiful like this.” 

“You really had a crush on me, huh,’ she whispers, reaching out to tug on his beard. 

Suddenly called out, Leati laughed. “Jey?” 

Coco nodded. “You were inside helping get the fire wood and he came and told me. He thought you were being weird because of me so he told me about the crush.” 

“I’ll kill him,’ he cheesed. His pearly whites shining as he licked his lips. 

“You won’t!” She smacked his chest, stepping around him while holding her shake. 

Leati grabbed the rest of the food and she held his drink in her hand as well. When they stepped into the hotel, she walked on his left side which somewhat hid her from the front desk. Leati was grateful that the area was empty and so were the halls towards the elevators. It wasn’t rare for the roster to bring women or men back to their rooms, but he didn’t want anyone to know the woman that was with him. 

Behind him, his stride took off, Coco nearly skipping to keep up with the man in front of her. The halls were long, winding it seemed, and he kept stopping to make sure no one was around a corner. They had finally made it to the room when she leaned against the wall beside him, breathing just a bit too hard.

Leati looked down at her as he opened the door. 

“You okay?” 

“You,’ she panted suddenly, ‘have long legs!” 

He looked down at her flustered expression. When she allowed herself to relax around him, she was so cute and very expressive. She was comfortable and he wanted her to always be that way with him.

Playfully, he looked down at her and leaned forward so they were eye level. “Nah, that’s because you’re short.” 

He kissed her quickly before she could reply. Laughing, Leati opened the door but stepped aside so she could go in first. She dunked under his arm and was instantly smacked in the face by the scent of man. Heavy, strong, the hotel room smelled like him. That’s that pheromone shit folks were talking about. She thought. There was nothing artificial about what she was smelling. He came up behind her and kissed the side of her head. She had stopped just in front of the door way. 

“Shy?”

Leati placed her bag in his room of the suite. He had all intentions of letting her have his bed alone for the night. He was always wired the night for a show and would pay a gym to get a few hours in to blow off enough steam to get a few hours of sleep. 

When he came out of the bedroom, he stopped and watched Nashae stand and begin to eat. She swayed side to side, shoes gone, the patty melt in one hand and the shake in the other. The jacket was on the arm of the couch and he licked his lips at her outfit. The most simplest of outfits; black yoga pants with the matching jacket, cropped and fitted to her chest. Her hair fell to the middle of her back, the brown curls moving as she swayed. He gave her a long once over. From the top of her head to the heels of feet, she had his full attention and didn’t even know it. Well, until her hand started digging around the bag for what she knew was his fries. 

She had them in her hand, ready to bring them to her mouth when a hand curled around her wrist, turned her hand a bit and dropped them in Leati’s mouth. 

“Ms. I don’t want any fries.”  

“Yours looked good.” 

Nashae pulled out two more and quickly put them in her mouth before he could stop her. She swayed side to side again, stopping when she realized how close Leati was to her. Her back was pressed up against his chest.

“I don’t think I’m the only one that had a crush on you though.” 

Arms around her middle, Leati leaned down so his head was on her shoulder. He felt her tense at his closeness. She didn’t pull away, but he could tell she was still nervous. 

“You’re the only one that matters,’ Nashae replied. “It does come with the territory though.” 

“I guess I have to earn my keep. You have a lot of admirers.” 

Nashae shrugged, his lips right beside her ear. His beard rubbing against her cheek. 

As they finished up their food, she was sitting between his legs as they watched TV in the bed. Well, she was trying, he was kissing the back and sides of her neck. She leaned back, head rolled to the side as he tasted her skin. Her chest rose and fell very visibly. 

“You’re so sensitive,’ he remarked, nosing along the length of her neck as she shivered. “You get so worked up just from my touch.” 

To prove his point, he placed his hand on her stomach, his thumb right under her top. Her stomach fluttered and she grabbed his wrist. 

“Is it me?” He asked. 

“A little.” 

“Noted.” 

He pulled away with a smile and leaned back against the pillows, his hands behind his head. She sat up, miffed, and turned to look at him confused. 

“What-’

Nashae turned around and looked at him. He avoided her gaze, pretending to watch the movie. 

“Leati!”

“O le a?” He asked. 

“E le mafai ona e pa'i mai ia te a'u ona toso ese ai lea faapea.”

“Manaia tele le leo Samoa i ou laugutu.”

She folded her arms across her chest and pursed her lips. 

“E te mana'o ou te pa'i atu ia te oe?.”

“Ou te le iloa le mea ou te manao ai, ae ou te fiafia pe a e paʻi mai ia te aʻu.”

“You told me you were a virgin,’ he said, ‘and I’m not going to do anything that you aren’t ready for. So when you ask me to touch you, what do you mean?” 

The switch to English and the focus on her virginity made her grimace. She hated this talk. It was always the crucial moment in relationships and it determined whether they wanted to deal with a relationship or not. 

“Leati,’ she whispered, ‘I-’

“If I am going to be the one that takes you to bed, I want you to be ready for it. For me, you know?” 

“Yeah, I know I just, I don’t have much experience in this.” 

Standing up, Nashae rubbed her hands on her pants. They were suddenly clammy. 

“I’ll go as slow as you need me to, baby.” He watched her pace. 

“Yeah, there are moments when I don’t want you to go slow.” She admitted.

She wouldn’t say he made her feel so submissive, but she was sure he could pick up on it.

“I just know that I don’t know what I’m doing and would probably be a disappointment.”

LO RANT:

Because why not? I just don’t understand the way that fans think, on one hand we can’t associate or even compare Lore Olympus to the myths because they’ll say “well it’s her retelling she doesn’t have to do things exactly alike” but on the other hand when you’re talking about the story by itself they’ll then try to counter whatever argument against Lore Olympus by saying “this is what they did in the myths!! why are you guys mad at greek mythology??” so which one is it because it’s giving me a headache. I get so tired of seeing the exact same argument from fans it’s so redundant and I mean that in the nicest way possible, I’m sure a lot of you are great people but the things y’all say and do for this comic is insane.

Rachel is adding yet another sex scene and people are rightfully angry. We’re in the climax where the world is basically in an apocalyptic state and the gods are all in danger of having no mortals to worship them and give them any purpose and it’s all because of Persephone, no one is thinking “oh yeah this is the perfect time for intimacy” and if you wanted to give fan service to those who are craving it you should’ve did it in a more calmer setting?? No one is threatening Rachel and telling her that she needs to add these ridiculously high stakes to her comic which prevents her from smoothly writing NSFW of the main couple, she’s literally doing this herself which is one of the reasons why it gets so annoying whenever fans get mad at people for being upset or disappointed. She’s doing this to herself, am I saying harass the woman or cyber bully her? No but that’s not what a lot of these people are doing, in every single webtoon especially one as big as Lore Olympus you’re going to have people who view your content differently or disagree with the way you’ve written things. I’m not trying to encourage the idea of changing your entire story to bend to those people but a large majority of your fandom are starting to have the exact same complaints and it’s clear that your plots are not being fleshed out at all, these people are just asking (no, begging really) for a cohesive story not a masterpiece.

Which brings me to my next point, all of the criticisms and explanations many critics have been sharing are entirely valid. You cannot put a sex scene as a replacement to storytelling, it just never works since it adds virtually nothing to what’s happening. Especially right now when, like I said before, Rachel is starting to spiral the plot into chaos (I’m not being insulting by saying this it’s literally chaos it seems like all of the characters are in trouble) and introducing or welcoming back a lot of intriguing plot stories and characters that many people are excited to see. To make an odd and unnecessary shift to romance in the middle of absolute destruction is crazy, especially when none of it is earned. I’ve said this in my later rants but I’ll say it again because it’s true, the romance between Hades and Persephone has no stakes and it never will it seems since Rachel doesn’t even allow stuff like that to happen. Nothing about their romance keeps you straddled on for the ride or leaves you at the edge of your seat which is why so many people are bored with their dynamic if there even is one to begin with. Slow burns and other romances are all about the payoff that’s what everyone’s here to see, after chapters on chapters of wondering if their love will brave the dangers around them and between them we finally get our question solved with appropriate intimacy.

Lore Olympus as a whole rarely wants to develop actual relationships in real time, it only skips to “the good bits” while completely ignoring the fact that the entire bonding experience between your ships and your fans rely heavily on us actually witnessing their chemistry/bond and being shown why they should be together, not being told by forces outside of the relationship.

All in all the potential sex scene is just terrible timing on Rachel’s part and it should’ve been done while literally nothing was happening to avoid all of the backlash that it’s getting now.

Been meaning to discuss this for a while; time to talk about how Toga’s still afraid of heroes and thinks they’d kill her even after her battle/girl talk with Uraraka, and ramble about all the ways I think that’s still a problem & why Uraraka will still need to address that in the future if she ever wants to actually save Toga. (Which I think it’s safe to say she hasn’t done yet, what with Toga dying ‘n all.)

Because yeah, for as much as Uraraka’s done for her in these last few chapters, Toga’s opinions of heroes as a whole is still less than nuclear waste. She still thinks the other heroes will kill her or lock her up for life. Y’know, half her character motive. And with how loosey goosey the heroes have been playing with their morals since Jin’s death, we don’t have much reason to think she’s wrong. Heck for as much as she thinks she’s different, Toga still thinks Uraraka was gonna lock her up and just give her blood in jail and we never really got a reason to think she’s wrong about that either, besides just assuming Uraraka wouldn’t do that anyway.

“Eliminating the freaks from the world” that’s what Toga thinks a ‘plain ol hero’ would do at this moment. (Or “Kill the deviant” if you prefer the slightly more upfront fan translations.)

And Toga cites this frightened opinion of heroes is a contributing factor to trying to off herself, in addition to wanting to save Ochako. It makes sense after all, if her only fates are death or life in Tartarus 2.0 then even if she’s given up fighting for her life and is ready to die; why flip that coin? And while I don’t want to take away from Toga’s love motivating her sacrifice to save Uraraka; this fear gets no such pass for motivating Toga to remove all of her blood. Even if I don’t expect the death to stick; if this issue nearly robs Uraraka of saving Toga, then someone should probably address it in the text at some point.

On that note, is this not proof that Toga hasn’t been saved if the heroes she’s been afraid of since middle school are still executioners to fear in her eyes? And the way that like 99.9% of the heroes over at UA were trying to kill Tomura just proves her right. So I think this one’s a systemic issue where the heroes need to change, instead of an internal issue Toga needs to get talked through. Because look, I know some readers I don’t much respect will say Toga deserves whatever’s coming to her; but if a teenage girl is killing herself so heroes can’t catch her, there’s an extent to which we’ve got to acknowledged those heroes having an image problem.

Man, stuff like this is why I keep hoping for a My Hero part 2. You obviously can’t resolve this kind of story line with Toga dead and being right to kill herself because that’s a messed up note to end on; but I’m sorry, you also can’t have her wake up in a villain hospital to see some hero tell her “What, of course you’re alive, why would you think we would kill you? By the way we still think we were right to kill your friend, we’re not sorry about it, and we’ll do it again the next time we face a threat with a quirk we deem too strong”. There’s no quick and easy resolution to half of Toga’s entire character motive, even less than there is for Dabi’s suicidal ideation; but that’s just where we’re left with this plot thread as it stands.

Also if I may go on a tangent unrelated to Toga just to get some more stuff off my chest:

Man remember when it was publicly unthinkable for heroes to kill people, to the point that the closest Ending could find to such a hero was the guy who killed a Nomu zombie? I mean I know the HC had heroes assassinate people but at least that was discrete because it was expected heroes shouldn’t kill and was probably even illigal. It didn’t have public/hero support that gave the impression heroes killing people will become more common. How come every aspect of hero society looks like it’ll stagnate or get worse with this arc? I mean we’ve got the corruption, the heteromorphobia, the war crimes, the treatment of those labelled villains, all on top of this murder stuff. Is this not all embarrassing for the heroes who’re supposed to be symbols of hope and goodness? What is going on with these hero society plot points these past few arcs?

The hideout was completely packed tonight. You were super stoked about the crowd for Corroded Coffin, but you were also feeling overwhelmed. At first, you were fine. Big crowds weren’t really your thing, but when Eddie came out on stage, you were one hundred percent focused on him and drowned everything else out.

Now, you have Eddie standing next to you with his arm around your shoulder while he’s talking to a group of people. You’re pressed up next to him with absolutely no space, and while you love being this close to him, you have no other choice because of all the bodies surrounding you and leaving you no choice.

You feel like you’re trapped and the exit is a thousand miles away.

The room begins to grow hotter and louder.

You feel yourself begin to zone out. Your heart is pounding in your chest and your vision is blurry. The sounds surrounding you being to drown out, like you’re in a different world, but you’re stuck in the same spot.

“Isn’t that right, baby?” you hear Eddie say to you but you can’t respond or react. “Baby?” Eddie asks, concerned. He grows worried when he sees the look on your face and the sweat on your forehead.

“Fuck, let’s get you outside, okay?” You give a small nod and close your eyes.

Eddie grabs your hand and plows through the crowd to get you outside into the fresh air. After what feels like hours, you’re finally outside.

You start to sob and you can’t catch your breath.

“Hey, hey, listen to my voice. Deep breaths, okay? In and out, can you do that for me?”

Eddie starts to take deep breaths with you and you feel yourself calm down a little, but you’re still shaken up.

“There ya go, you’re okay. Can I touch you?”

You nod and his hands rest on your shoulders. He wants nothing more than to pull you into him for a hug, but he knows that might make things worse.

Once your breathing is normal and you feel more cooled off, you look at him. “I’m so sorry. I ruined your night and-”

“You didn’t ruin anything, babe. I’m sorry that I didn’t notice sooner. I know big crowds can stress you out sometimes and I should’ve thought about that.”

“I was fine, but then everything hit me all at once and I’m so happy that you guys got a big crowd tonight. I just wish I was able to handle it better and support you.”

“You do support me. Always. Even when there were only two other people in the crowd, you were there. You’re there at band practices and even when I’m just in my room forcing you to listen to whatever shitty lyrics I write, you’re sitting on my bed with the biggest smile on your face.”

Both of you laugh and Steve walks outside, trying to find you.

You hold each other and you realize you’d go through just about anything to be able to hug him.

“Feeling better?” He asks and you hum as a yes.

“Think I might need a kiss, though”

Eddie chuckles and captures you in a kiss. The kiss is sweet and slow and everything you need.

“I love you” You say as soon as you break apart.

“I love you, more. You know who I don’t love? Harrington. I mean how hard is it to get a glass of water”

You laugh and wrap yourself around him again. “Maybe we can just get some water at home?” you suggest.

“Anything for my one and only groupie” he jokes.

You groan and he leads you to his van, stopping to kiss you every few seconds.

“Guys! y/n I have your water!” you hear Steve shout, making the two of you giggle

“Hurry, before he sees us”

SUGA: “That’s how people think of us. They think we show our lives without filtering anything, but we hide a lot of things. I tried really hard so that my weaknesses don’t show. We should get rid of all of that and show them the raw side.”

SE3OUL: “I think from their perspective, it would also help them. Because online – you know, people are always showing their best side, but if they know that there are moments where things aren’t as perfect, it’ll feel more real.”

RM: “When we’re under pressure, for example, we get annoyed at each other. We get sensitive. I think we need to show them some of that, too.”

SUGA: “During our performances or preparations, we always show…”

RM: “What I’ve always emphasised ever since we made our debut is that we want to interact man to man. I struggle internally every day. I actually have these kinds of thoughts and have these other sides. But if I let them see it, they might worry and they might not like me. But I really want to break out of that.”

SE3OUL: “There’s this sort of uneasy feeling lurking a lot of the time. As artists, let’s say you do something. If someone has a negative view of it, it looks bad. But then if you see the positive, it can be good. It tends to depend on a person individually.”

SUGA: “To our fans, at least, we try really hard to show them everything honestly. I want them to think, ‘Oh, I didn’t know they had that side.’ It’ll be an opportunity to show them more by filtering less.”

RM: “Our biggest strength is that human touch and we can show them more of it. So they think, ‘they’re just like me.’ They get irritated under pressure and they also cry.”

SE3OUL: “That’s right. I want them to be able to relate to us, to see us as their equal and not to put us above them or on a pedestal. We’re simple humans at the end of the day. We laugh, we cry, we argue.”

RM: “Honestly, I was only lucky to find what I wanted to do earlier in life. I was lucky to find good friends and that’s how I made it here. If I get frustrated during work, I just read webtoons for five hours. And some days I don’t want to work.”

RM: “People think I always work hard, but sometimes I just lie down and sleep. Things like that.”

SUGA: “They said that we’ll cry if we watch this 10 or 20 years later. After I heard that, I could imagine myself watching this in 10 or 20 years. When I see this camera, I feel like I’m going to cry. It feels strange. I think it’s going to be a life…”

RM: “Stigma comes last in the second part.” *also checking the cue sheet* “Taehyung, come with me.”

J-HOPE: “All we have to do is make them sing along.” *talking to seongie beside him + laughing*

SE3OUL: *side eyeing him tbh*

JIMIN: *laughing + leaning into seongie from his other side* “Hyung, he looks like he wants to kill you.” *talking to hobi*

SUGA: “The total number of concerts during THE WINGS TOUR is as many as the number of concerts that we gave so far, I was told.”

JIMIN: “Throughout this tour, first of all, we’ll go to many different countries though we can’t go to every country. We have fans that support us from afar so it’s nice that we can go and meet them. I believe they expect something from us – something that they can’t usually see. Like the performances that they only saw on TV from afar. I want to show them as is.”

SE3OUL: “From an outsider’s perspective, this tour… it can look like a big leap. All of a sudden? Since when? These kinds of reactions may be common, but it’s also a new experience for us to learn about ourselves. Right now we’re doing thirteen countries, but with time, I want to meet fans from everywhere at least once. I think our perseverance has always been our biggest strength.”

STAFF: “Yes, thank you.” *calling a cut to the practice now*

JIMIN: *bowing to the staff* “Yes, Jimin of BTS.” *now jumping off stage*

STAFF: “We can place it on the dancers if you want to stick to just vocals.”

SE3OUL: *trying to practice the move again* “Ah, seriously…” *annoyed at himself + grabbing a towel to wipe off his sweat* “No, let’s switch to a walk. Staying stagnant isn’t an option for me.”

STAFF: “We can try a walk with the dancers running on either side. It’ll create a better focal point.” *discussing ideas*

The video then cuts to Taehyung as Hoseong continues to practice with the staff watching.

V: *drinking water + on stage* “We’re not practicing live, are we?” *proceeds to walk around and do vocal exercises*

V: “Can’t be removed~” *practicing his song*

The video continues into showing Taehyung and Jeongguk both practicing for the upcoming concerts individually.

JUNGKOOK: *lying down* “No… I didn’t plan well.” *wiping sweat off his face* “I slept too early and woke up too early. I didn’t get to sleep before the rehearsal.” *now sitting up* “But the live performance was good.”

RM: “Every member has a keyword. For example, Jeongguk, just like you saw on the stage, his keyword is Begin. He joined BTS when he knew nothing and he grew up here. It’s the story of the beginning of his life. And I think about myself a lot. So they said that could be my keyword.”

RM: *writing on a board* “It’s my life. The graph of my life. That’s right. Life has ups and downs.” *arms crossed*

STAFF: “We spent a lot of money on this scene.”

JIN: “Oh, really?” *asking into the mic*

STAFF: “Yes.”

JIN: “It has to be more money than Hobi’s.”

STAFF: “The most money went into the resources.”

The video cuts to Jin now practicing his song for his stage before we switch to Hoseok who is being helped into a jacket on stage.

J-HOPE: “Oh, this is hard.” *talking about putting on the jacket in time*

INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEWS

J-HOPE: “The BTS that I thought… ‘The BTS that I saw on social media is not this.’ We don’t want to deliver that. We want to make sure they feel our energy.”

RM: “It’s a show. A performance. We don’t want the audience to come and say, ‘I wasted two and a half hours of my life.’ We want them to get more value, show them everything we prepared and see how they react to it.”

The video cuts to Yoongi with Hoseok and Hoseong (who are seemingly always together).

SUGA: *as hobi holds onto both of his shoulders* “He’s the man of THE WINGS TOUR.” *pointing*

SE3OUL: *shoving hobi aside and walking up close to the camera* “That’s not right. ARMY, you’ll keep your eyes on me at the concert, won’t you?” *rizzing up the camera*

SUGA: “Yah,” *trying to pull him away* “They won’t even see this until after the tour’s finished. Stop wasting your breath.”

J-HOPE: “No, no. The real man of THE WINGS TOUR is Hoseong-ah.” *grabbing seongie’s shoulders now*

SE3OUL: *grabbing his face in a jokingly aggressive way* “Is this your way of confessing to me?” *now pretending to lean in*

SUGA: “Yah! What’s wrong with you guys?” *shoving them both away*

Hoseok and Hoseong burst out laughing as Yoongi walks up closer to the camera.

SUGA: “You see… this- this is something I have to go through every so often in this group. They start acting like wild animals without supervision.” *disappointed shake of the head*

The video cuts to Jin.

JIN: “It’s been a long time since I sang so many songs. My legs are shaking.” *laughing* “I’d better work harder.”

JIMIN: “Your legs are shaking already?” *walking past onto the stage*

JIN: *pointing* “He has to say that.”

JIMIN: “It’s because you’re old.”

JIN: *pointing again as he talks to the camera* “There’s always one person that will diss you. It’s usually the younger ones together, Seongie included. This is the one time he’s with the maknaes. If you’re so good, you do it.” *complaining*

JUNGKOOK: *overheard* “What’s wrong? My Jin hyung is handsome.”

JIN: “Yah… there. Isn’t he an uptight friend?” *pointing at jk and laughing, satisfied*

SE3OUL: *the man who is everywhere joins the duo, wrapping his arm around jk’s shoulders* “Oho, our maknae. Aren’t you trying too hard to get into our hyung’s good books?” *leading him away and leaving jinnie behind dumbstruck*

JIN: “Did you see that? This is what I meant. He’s getting in with the younger members, this guy born in ‘94. Ah, he’s sharp. I’ll show him.” *following the rest onto the stage*

INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEWS

JIMIN: “It’s going to be a long journey. I hope that there is something at the end of this journey. I’m doing this tour with that in mind. It’s not that I’m already thinking about the end, but I think I hope I see a better me at the end of it.”

JIN: “What BTS tries to accomplish is… actually, we accomplished everything we planned. We made most of our dreams come true. Now we have to move on towards a new dream. And I want to be in it. That’s my dream.”

The video cuts to Jimin, Jin and Namjoon practicing.

JIMIN: *dancing + singing spring day* “From the beginning. Snow comes down. And it comes down slowly again.”

The trio are slowly joined by the rest of the members. Hoseong joins in on the little dance.

SE3OUL: “Everybody I miss… yeah!” *silly lil dance*

JIN: *laughing* “That was a good one.”

RM: *amused leader* “One more time! I miss… yeah!” *following the younger members’ lead*

JIMIN: “Do the dab. You need to come forward for the second part.” *talking into his mic*

INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEWS

JIMIN: “The members are my motivation. They’re one of my biggest motivations. I enjoy it when I do things with these people. They make me think that we can do so many things. And that motivates me more. Just having them by my side encourages me as well. Really, these guys make me move.”

SE3OUL: *long silence + pondering* “Well… when I first joined BTS, I don’t think I had too much passion for myself. My focus was always on my parents, and I don’t regret that, but I really started living for myself because of these guys. They showed me a new purpose. They gave me a dream, a reason to look forward to each new day.”

JIN: “We want to be the number one song on Billboard. Give a concert in a really big concert hall. That’s also part of my dream, but if I must share something more personal, my dream is to perform with these guys for a long time.”

The video cuts to the members practicing together now and getting a feel of the stage.

INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEWS

SUGA: “I also wonder how much more I will have grown after one year.”

SE3OUL: “I always wonder about these things. A day, a month, a year… have I changed from the me that I used to be? Can people notice a difference? So I think this will help me find an answer. Seong-ah, let me speak to you casually. You better be working hard, huh? Don’t get lazy just because you’ve made an achievement or two.” *threatening + laughing*

JIMIN: “I don’t know how much time it will take to fulfill it, but I hope you become a good singer.”

JUNGKOOK: “Jeongguk, big bro. You’re 22 now, so I’ll call you big bro. I only have goals, I don’t really put things into action. I hope you’re putting your utmost effort into practice by that time.”

V: *pursing lips* “Hello, I’m the V from last year. I’m trying to do my best to grow a bit more each day. I’m trying to focus a lot. If there’s anything I hope is that you don’t get injured. I hope the tour ends safely.”

RM: “You’re not really that smart. And you’re not so selfless either. I hope you know your limits well. But don’t stay within those limits. Overcome the limits each day.”

SUGA: “I hope we don’t become stagnant. Neither BTS nor I. It could be slow and difficult, or we might enjoy it, but we can go on slowly experiencing all of that.”

IN HIS SECOND SEASON with Haas F1 Team, Mick Schumacher seems more comfortable driving out from under his dad’s enormous shadow [fig. 1].

           ROAD & TRACK: This is your second season of F1, and you have thrived in the second season of every series you’ve raced. You’ve scored your first points; the car is great.          

MICK SCHUMACHER: My second year has been pretty good most of the time. But I would say that usually my first years haven’t been awful.

           R&T: No one’s saying they were awful!          

MS: Unfortunately, I was sometimes unlucky [in the first season], and that made it look like the second year was extremely good. Last year was quite special. We had a bad car and still managed to get into Q2. We got close to points at times, and obviously this year is very different in terms of the overall situation. It’s very hard to compare them. Imagine how the third year will look!

           R&T: There’s more interest in F1 now than ever. What do you think of how the sport has grown?          

MS: The demand is huge at the moment, the biggest it’s been in a long time. Partly I would say it’s because of Netflix making it much more of a fan-friendly environment for people who maybe don’t understand the sport or haven’t been in the sport for long. They are now able to watch the sport without having to wonder what we are doing. I think we’re on a very good wave, and hopefully we’ll be able to stay there for a long time. I think everything comes to a moment where it changes. And I think we’re set to anticipate that moment, to keep growing, and keep making it interesting—and maybe not overkill it by throwing 40 races at it—and try to make it enjoyable for people to watch and bring a suspenseful moment to it. Formula usually has that by nature, because you have humans racing in machines against each other.

           R&T: Have you watched Drive to Survive?          

MS: Every episode I wasn’t in.

           R&T: Why’s that?          

MS: Well, most of my friends that watched it said I wasn’t in it much. That’s all right. I don’t like seeing myself on-screen. I don’t see myself as a celebrity or whatever. I feel like I’m still 12 at times.

R&T: F1’s regulations are going to change in 2026. With free and full control over what the next car is, what’s your dream machine?

MS: Don’t do that. It’s going to be completely different. It’s going to bring my hopes up. I’d probably make it as light as I could. So, early-2000s-type weight, which is like 250 kilos lighter compared to right now. And make it still a ground-effect car. Probably put a V-10 into it or a V-8, depending which one’s more efficient. And I’d try to get more tire manufacturers on board—at least three—and try to have more engine manufacturers as well.

           R&T: So you want a 2004 car with ground effects?          

MS: Something like that.

           R&T: With second-generation drivers, fans naturally want to judge the current driver by the standards set by their father. How do you keep comparisons with your dad in perspective?          

MS: I invite it. I am more than happy to get compared to my dad. He’s obviously the best, and he will always be the best. I always want to be compared to the best. I’m fortunate to be able to be compared to him. So yeah, I definitely take it onboard, cherish it, and take it as a huge compliment and something that motivates me. ■

hi! what do you make of ai art? im conflicted cause i see how its great for disabled people in many ways, but then i look back at the work people put into becoming artists and mastering the craft and feel many things lol i wish i could look at it similarly like i look at producers for example, where you have a vision and tools and you know how to use it well so you dont need the musical training background to be creative, but i cant help but feel like its more complicated with visual art? that theres a whole other side besides having a vision and good understanding of a shortcut tool. im very very torn and also sorry for all that on your succession blog but knowing youre a fantastic artist whos recently been dealing with this sort of impossibility to make art i wonder if you have some insight in this area.

i appreciate u wanting to know my opinion on a Hot Topic such as this! i dunno man i have an aversion to any definition of art of any kind that requires effort or skill as essential features that make the art “real”. i think a lot of what is happening with AI discourse is that people are appropriately appalled by the way capitalism mangles creative output and even what kind of relationships artists can have with their work and with the rest of the world. i do not have a problem with a machine that digests and reconfigures information — a machine is just a machine. if one copied the way i make texture with colored pencil and produced an approximation of a new original work by me, i would be fascinated by what reactions i might have to it. would i feel threatened by it? would i be flattered? what might it open up for me, to see my work broken into a particular machine’s data? this is just a dream, though. i see many artists understandably frightened by what the exploiter class may choose to do with their new toys (and what they are already doing to us with them). it just sucks to see that very plain class antagonism passed over with arguments about the “purity” of human-made art, how it is somehow apparent to any observer when a work is truly endowed with a “soul” (if these arguments sound eerily like fascist aesthetic principles, it’s because they are fascistic).

and then to see people cheering for their own doom with this thing of mr. game of thrones & co suing chatGPT, complete with condescending explanations of how it’s not going to hurt fanfic writers because the problem these multimillionaires have is actually with people monetizing their work, and the true humble Fan would ne’er ask a but penny. do people really not see how this is making the divide between the “artist” and the “common person” greater? it is so goddamn expensive to survive right now, and the wealthy are using fear of technology as a tool to prevent you from making money, and yes, making art at all. only those with enough capital to protect their intellectual property with the force of the law are allowed to express themselves through art. yes, i think it should be well within your rights to bind and sell (for money, yes, money) your game of thrones fanfiction. so many of us are living in poverty right now, bombarded by entertainment but prevented from ever chewing it up or spitting it out. ed roth’s rat fink character had it right. fuck mickey mouse. like, we’re actually back to saying “fuck mickey mouse” being really cool. put him in a blender full of data, have it put him into a beach scene with BBW anime versions of lara croft and princess peach. intellectual property is a historically recent phenomenon. it is a tool to make the rich richer and get you well and squarely fucked. theoretically, yeah, it sounds good to have your work and livelihood honored and protected, but just like they’re trying to replace artists and actors and writers with AI, every single tool becomes a weapon in the hands of the rich. the hell people are worried they need more punishing copyright law to fix is already here. the woman who designed care bears & strawberry shortcake never saw a penny from it. AI art is only a threat in the hands of the corporations that happily do these things in the first place.

anyways. lol. i’m not very technologically minded in my own art practice — i’m not naturally drawn to new technology as a part of my work, and find many of the results i’ve seen from current AI art tech to be kind of aesthetically unpleasant. artwork contains unpleasantness, though. i’m not really interested in arguments over what artwork “should” contain, only what it does. i think the best AI art i’ve seen (ie: the stuff i’ve enjoyed the most) has been from alan resnick:

it is so terrifically disquieting. it leans into what makes AI-generated BBW lara croft kind of difficult to actually jack off to. the overlapping lines of bodies, the nonsense text. but then, if this work has merit, is that because alan resnick is uniquely special, thus proving the point that the technology is only valid in the hands of a “real artist”? can mr. resnick be said to be the “artist” of these images at all, because he trained a program to his own style and input interesting ides? does he deserve lots of money for his work creating iconic adult swim shorts like this house has people in it? well sure

or would this art only have value if somebody put a tremendous amount of labor into it? you know. my mother used to tell me, “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work”. she said she should nail the phrase to my forehead, like martin luther at the church doors. having very recently become disabled & chronically ill, i don’t believe it anymore. i believe we should be able to use technology to make ourselves more free. we should not be so financially insecure that we are threatened by anyone expressing themselves with something we made. the ultra-wealthy are threatened by infringement because they need everybody else to stay poor, and the poor are threatened because they do not want to be poor any longer. it’s got nothing to do with strange scrambled pictures. if i could take pictures of every work of art i’ve ever loved and put it into a machine that mixes it up and turns it into a monster, i would do it just for a bittersweet laugh at it.

hey so i see that you’re a fan of pjo and i had questions about what you thought of percy’s characterization in the show.

to be upfront, i’ve only watched the first 3 episodes so far and while i’ve enjoyed it, i found percy to be a lot angrier than I remembered in the books and when I reread The Lightning Thief i thought “yeah, see? he wasn’t this angry”

do you have thoughts? i do like the fact that the fatal flaws are being made a more “in your face” thing instead of a thing that gets brought up every now and again. but i do feel like they sacrificed some of the silly middle-grade vibes in favor of the heavier themes that, while showcased, didn’t really become prevalent until later.

i hope this made sense, but i love your analyses and was wondering if you had any ideas

You’re very kind to ask! I don’t get to talk about Percy Jackson often, and it was one of the songs making up the medley of my childhood, not to be dramatic!

I think you nailed it. I don’t have much to add. Percy wasn’t as angry in the first series because, as you said, Rick Riordan’s writing style kept the books pretty light. I also think that’s what contributed to why we all like Percy Jackson; he is angry and he is rebellious, but Rick Riordan doesn’t just outright say all that. Those are characteristics that, if they were just said outright, would make you think of less-appealing characters that try too hard to be broody. Like Nico Di Angelo or Shadow the Hedgehog or something. He says it with lines like:

“His face had that same brooding look that had always gotten me branded a rebel.“ (When Percy sees Poseidon for the first time.) But that’s the thing. Percy looks brooding, but we’re inside his head, so we know he doesn’t think of himself that way. He doesn’t take himself that seriously. He’s pretty upbeat, in his own head. But yeah, of course he’s also got a lot of anger and the snark is coming from actual resentment, etc.

Anyway, you nailed it. The show is definitely going for a more serious vibe. But the problem with that is, Walker Scobell and Percy himself are more suited to something that doesn’t take itself too seriously. So that when serious moments happen, they’re that much more impactful. You’re used to seeing Percy and Annabeth save each other from getting turned into Guinea pigs or stuck on sleazy salesmen’s stretching mattress sales, so when they do more serious things, like choose to jump into Tartarus rather than be separated, or he holds her back from a vision of everything she wants with the sirens, it hits harder.

You’re so used to seeing these characters make light and find quirky solutions to zany dangers that it engages your feelings when something truly horrible happens to them, or they really worry about something that’s relatable and real, like whether or not their parents value them.

So I think this show loses a lot of that..l don’t know what to call it…emotional pacing?

Specifically with Percy’s characterizations, so far the best moments of the show (and we all know it) have been when Percy is petting a lizard and dancing in the forest or making Annabeth and Grover laugh with the song or the jokes. The only serious moment I think they’ve gotten right, with his characterization, so far, is when he shoves Annabeth down the stairs and takes her place fighting Echidna.

But those are just moments. I think some of the new stuff they’re doing with Percy that I don’t remember being in the books—AT ALL—I like that whole “the gods and demigods are all about glory and one-upping each other, but Percy actually cares about people, he’s built different” thing—are really good. Because you can look at Percy from the books and get there. You can say, “well yeah, his fatal flaw is that he’d sacrifice the world to save his friends. Of course he taught everybody to care more about each other as people in the first series—he gave up being a god when he had the chance, for that reason.”

So that’s basically my take, not just on Percy’s characterization, but the whole show so far. “You can look at the books and get to the show.” It’s different, darker, and the focus is different…but it’s not contrary to the books. And there are enough little touches in there that we think of Book Percy when we see Walker Scobell’s portrayal, anyway. Is it confirmation bias? Are we seeing what we want to see? Maybe a little.

(P.S. - As a side note, I will say there is one character who is totally out-of-character with very little remaining of his original self—and it’s Grover. The Grover in the show is not the Grover in the books, even if you tilt your head and squint. If Percy seems too troubled, Grover seems way, way too troubled. It’s fine, whatever, cool character named Grover, but that’s not the Real Grover.)

Mark Henn, loooong time Disney animator who was still with the studio in the recent years, has spoken recently...

He's pretty much kind of done with Walt Disney Animation Studios, feeling that the minimal 2D work he had been doing lately (alongside veterans Eric Goldberg and Randy Haycock) wasn't very "meaningful". He is open to going back to finish a short of his own, that he was working with producer Clark Spencer on, but that's just about it. As the Brew notes, his full-time career there is over. He started on THE FOX AND THE HOUND, which released in 1981, to give you an idea of how long he's been there.

It's quite telling how many of the greats departed or were laid off under both John Lasseter and Jennifer Lee's leaderships. Glen Keane, Chris Sanders, Nik Ranieri, Ron Clements, John Musker, the list goes on... I know a lot of animation fans desperately want Disney to do 2D features again, but I don't see it happening. I haven't seen it happening in years. Whenever a piece of 2D for a short or a promo or a commercial surfaces, twitter goes gaga and says "See Disney?? You can do 2D! No excuses!"

It's not about excuses, they simply DO NOT WANT TO. For whatever reason, no matter how silly it may seem to us.

Henn said it best:

"Since then, I think it’s just too difficult for the studio to justify essentially creating a second studio within this current studio in order to do 2D, which is what you had when we had Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh. We essentially had literally two smaller studios under one roof, and I just think that that became too much of a financial risk. Right now, we’re barely able to house everybody that we have on staff. So, I mean, there’s all kinds of logistical things from where you’re going to put people to taking that risk."

I've talked about it, exhaustively, myself. It's just, the larger Disney company isn't too interested in being - to quote former Disney storyman Steve Hulett - a "Renaissance art factory". In addition to 2D really not being conducive to editorial and a one-a-year assembly line model, WDAS management are simply making movies that they think the public wants to see. They spend upward $135m+ on them, and they try to get one out every year. They're lucky to even be making movies, since they've been nearly shut down far too many times to name... As recently as 2006, even, because one Steve Jobs felt they didn't need to be a thing anymore now that the company owned Pixar. I see them as a "legacy brand" at this point. Still alive, still kicking, probably by virtue of being the thing that created the whole company in the first place... But that's just it. It's very "Disney, the way you always liked it" these days. I think that's part of why STRANGE WORLD and WISH had trouble theatrically, among many other things. Pixar had one miss with LIGHTYEAR, but a leggy sensation with ELEMENTAL. It remains to be seen how ELIO does a year and a half from now. Universal on the other hand is somehow keeping audiences coming back for both DreamWorks and Illumination's movies. With the rare miss every now and then. (SPIRIT: UNTAMED, RUBY GILLMAN, etc.)

But yeah, I've kind of made peace with it. Disney Animation is currently not in the business of making movies for people who can spot a Milt Kahl head swaggle from a mile away, they're making movies for the folks who put on Disney+, and then put on ENCANTO and such as background noise. It just... Is what is. 2D is still there in some way or another, like in short films and small bits of animated effects and whatnot, but... It's a crapshoot to think that they'll do a full feature like that this decade, I feel. If anything, they'll just keep tinkering with the art style of WISH, which... Didn't work on a lot of folks. So... Do they go back to the tried-and-true TANGLED/FROZEN/MOANA house style? I don't know, I don't have a crystal ball. I don't even know if they'll have a movie by Thanksgiving of this year. That new Disney+ series they made that's coming out next month, IWAJU, looks like a slightly upscaled Disney Junior show.

I still look for something I'll like in the upcoming stuff, because... Well, even though Disney Animation is merely a cog in the massive Disney machine at this point with little of an identity left (much like the live-action/CG tech demo end of things), this studio's output... Decades and decades of it, has been formative for me. At least one WDAS movie was someone's gateway to the wider world of animation, methinks. It was certainly my VHS tapes of BAMBI, THE JUNGLE BOOK, and THE LION KING, among many others in my library at age 8, that's for sure. I even *liked* the recent films, I have yet to see WISH all the way through, but I did enjoy STRANGE WORLD enough, and liked ENCANTO, RAYA, FROZEN II, etc. a good deal. It's just, a lot of it is nothing really special to me in the end. Just fine at best, with some impressive stuff here and there. Like, say, some of the directing in ENCANTO. Just fine, adequate. I don't think that of the Disney animated features made before this decade. Even my least favorite animated Disney work of the '70s, '80s, '90s, and '00s still has something very unique and influential to it. I don't intend for this to be a knock on the crews' hard work, it's only my personal feelings on what I've seen. It's what they seem to want to be making, or what the management is approving of... I can kick and scream, but, that won't do anything. I'll just see what's next and say "Well, let's see... What will I get out of this one?"

I've long accepted that the ship sailed on 2D features at WDAS, and most of the other big theatrical studios for that matter. Many of whom never even MADE a 2D feature. Pixar never made one, Illumination didn't, Sony Animation didn't until FIXED, you get the idea. The only other one that's still chugging is DreamWorks, and they made their final 2D feature back in 2003. Twenty-one years ago. I look elsewhere for that kind of thing, and I found just that... KLAUS, WOLFWALKERS, you get the idea. The best you'll get in theaters is an adaptation of a 2D animated show or pre-existing franchise, like THE BOB'S BURGERS MOVIE. I doubt that pending-theatrical release Looney Tunes movie, THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP, will be the great decider of the future of 2D animated movies in theaters. Ditto FIXED, *if* that's still aiming for theaters. (It got its rating from the MPA a long while ago. It's done. It's in the can... and there's no release date for it.)

So... Yeah... Is what it is. WDAS seems to refuse to do a 2D feature, and have been refusing for over a decade (I really think PRINCESS AND THE FROG and WINNIE shut the door permanently, like an encore that they fought to make happen), and the kind of movie that they're making now may just not be for me and others for the foreseeable future. We'll see where their next path takes them... As long as they come out whatever happens still making movies...

I’m trying not to focus on shipping war nonsense because I have learned that my world is so much more peaceful when I mind my own business and stay in the little corner of fandom that agrees with me. But with that said…I am absolutely about to rehash old season 1 & 2 arguments, because some of y’all can’t seem to let anything GO and I am sick to death of hearing about it! (sorry for the length of this in advance. I really need to get this all out of my system at once so that I can go back to nicely shutting up about it.)

1) As for what inspired this post… I do find it interesting that there are still people trying to insist that Steve didn’t walk out on a blackout drunk Nancy at that party and instead claim “he asked Jonathan to take her home first.” It’s just that…no he didn’t? There is literally a scene of Steve shoving angrily past Jonathan and other partygoers and out the door? In fact, this is presumably what tips Jonathan off to go look for Nancy in the first place. Yes, Jonathan later tells Nancy that Steve asked him to drive her, but it’s pretty clear that he’s lying. He’s saying it because he doesn’t want Nancy to be more upset than she already is re: Steve. He’s just trying to be a good friend and to comfort her.

This misconception alone might not piss me off so much if it wasn’t for many of the same fans then insisting that jancy shippers or even just Nancy fans are delusional for holding true to the belief that Nancy never cheated and that she and Steve were broken up when she and Jonathan got together. Somehow we’re supposed to believe that Steve walking back into the party, seeking out Jonathan, and asking him to take Nancy home is all “implied”—despite a direct scene pointing to the contrary—but: “Well then tell me.” “Tell you what?” “That you love me.” “…Really?” *cue a long moment in which Nancy is unable to say it because it clearly isn’t true, and Steve clearly realizes it.* “I think that you’re bullshit.” *Steve walks away. Nancy says nothing and does not go after him*…is not a ‘clear enough’ breakup? Yeah, because they totally would have come back from that one if only *checks notes* big bad Nancy hadn’t gone off and ~cheated~ on poor Steve with creepy Jonathan. Right.

(It’s the needing to be spoon fed the breakup but then making up ridiculous justifications for Steve’s behavior to try to either absolve him or worse, to demonize Nancy and/or Jonathan, for me….)

2) Comparing Steve and Jonathan’s past mistakes is just dumb to begin with because they have both grown from their season one arcs. Still, if I have to see one more post about how Jonathan is completely irredeemable for taking that photo of Nancy, I might actually lose my mind. “Why have people suddenly forgotten Jonathan being a CREEP and STALKING Nancy in season one!!!” Listen. I can guarantee you that no one has forgotten it because y’all insist on bringing it up every. two. seconds. Please be serious.

•though you’d think otherwise from the way people talk about it, funnily enough I have never seen a single jancy or Jonathan enjoyer claim this was anything less than a horrific violation of privacy and yes, creepy and disrespectful behavior on Jonathan’s part. 

•Jonathan gives a sincere apology, which Nancy then accepts. He never repeats the behavior and he never tries to justify his actions.

•that’s all there is to it. You can like him or not, of course, but it’s ridiculous to go on and ON about this years later, often while, at the same time, jumping through hoops to claim Steve’s myriad of wrongs aren’t ‘nearly as bad’ as Jonathan’s photos. Steve calls Nancy a slut, lets his friends declare it on the theater billboard to the whole town. He pressures her about sex. He insults Jonathan’s family, including his missing kid brother, and calls him a slur. He definitely leaves Nancy alone at that party. I like Steve (though damn, do his stans work hard at getting me not to) and I obviously like Jonathan, but that’s because I can acknowledge that they’ve both grown, and I also don’t selectively pick and choose what parts of their arcs I care to remember.

3) which brings me to…season four. Honestly most of the st*ncy flirtations were pretty harmless (if forced, imo) and I firmly believe that people are allowed to have ‘moments’ with other people even when one or both of those people are in a relationship without either one being immediately crucified for it. Obviously Nancy and Jonathan had some similar moments between them in season one/two when she was still with Steve. I didn’t think she was ~emotionally cheating~ then and believe me, I don’t think she is with Steve now, either. I also don’t think Steve was being like, wildly disrespectful to Nancy and Jonathan’s relationship for most of the season (for instance, his comment about the three of them and Robin hanging out after all this is over felt sincere)

That said…it definitely got a little squirmy there by the end and I have no idea why the writers had to push it so far even if they wanted to resurrect the stupid love triangle for season five. Telling an ex who’s in a relationship that you’re dreaming about having six kids with her is…yeahhh…totally out-of-pocket, lol. Even if she wasn’t in a relationship it’d be totally weird, but it makes it worse that she is, because it means Steve’s not only disrespecting Nancy, he’s also disrespecting Jonathan. (It was a bizarre writing choice, so believe me I’m mad for Steve’s character arc at this point, too.)

Yet, what do st*ncy and Steve fans choose to go on and on about? An off-the-cuff joke from Jonathan about how Steve isn’t much of a leader like Nancy is. It’s so not even that serious, lmao. I mean, what?? Jonathan and Steve haven’t spoken in years, and have cordially spoken pretty much never. I think Jonathan’s allowed to get a small barb in (note: I think this was a weird writing choice too, because why would Jonathan even be thinking about Steve? It’s out of left field. But again. Love triangle drama. Sigh.)

At this point it’s just getting ridiculous. At the end of the day ship whatever you want to ship, but maybe find a way to do so that doesn’t revolve around repeatedly trying to trash the other side using the same stale, nonsensical arguments. Or at least keep it out of the jancy and Jonathan tags, Jesus Christ.

It was Friday night, and DJ and Courtney were sitting in Geoff’s basement. It was a bit of a tradition for the five friends to come over and hang out. Sometimes they’d have a game night, but tonight was specifically dedicated to movies.

“I’m getting really tired of showing up first.” Courtney said in frustration. She was known for being punctual, and even let her friends get away with being late for a few minutes, but tonight was getting irritating.

“They’ll be here soon.” DJ reassured her. In truth, he had no idea when the rest of the group would arrive. He knew Duncan would show up last minute, but Geoff and Bridgette should have been here a few minutes ago.

“DJ, it’s Geoff’s house and we’re here before him. I’m leaving.”

As Courtney got up from the couch DJ reached his hand out and tugged her back down. He understood her patience was wearing thin, but he also knew she’d get over it the minute everyone walked in.

“Come on, look on the bright side. At least we get first dibs on what to watch.”

Courtney thought for a minute before sighing, and sinking back into a comfortable position, “I guess.”

She looked around the room. It was in decent shape to say the least. Geoff had a habit of being messy, but it looked as if he had cleaned up, or at least tried to. Courtney spotted a glass dish on the coffee table, it wasn’t there last week but she distinctly remembered giving Geoff some pointers on how to be a proper host. She smiled, he had finally listened to something worthwhile.

“At least he listened to some of my advice, and left some candies on the table.” She said and pointed. DJ nodded in agreement. They did not hesitate to indulge in a few pieces.

45 minutes later

The duo was still waiting for their friends. On the inside Courtney was ready to start a war with whoever dared walk in first, but she was also feeling a bit off. Somehow, she felt all the particles in her body tingling with every movement. Oddly enough, she found the sensation hilarious. She held in her own laugh as DJ began saying something.

“Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?”

He was staring at the ceiling fan, his head slowly moving in conjunction with the blades. Courtney watched him in disbelief. Katy Perry? Seriously?

“DJ, I love you, but please shut up… and yes.”

They both laughed at the reference of the throwback. Courtney then got up abruptly, gasping as if she found out all of life’s secrets, “You know what would be really fun?!”

“Buying a pet bunny?” He said as he stared off into space.

“Yes! But also, a walk.” DJ gasped. A walk sounded like the best thing in the world, right after getting a bunny of course.

“Oh my gosh, Courtney. You read my mind! AND maybe something to eat or drink?”

The two practically jumped in excitement and headed toward the back door.

Literally 15 minutes later

The remaining three friends walked into Geoff’s basement. Geoff would be lying if he said he wasn’t just a little scared as they were almost an hour late. To his surprise his two friends were nowhere to be found.

“Where are DJ and Courtney?” He asked.

Duncan shrugged and slumped onto the couch. Geoff looked over at Bridgette who just pulled her phone out, and stepped into the other room. It was probably one of them saying they left, he wouldn’t blame them. Geoff felt bad for not even letting them know he was running behind.

He sat next to Duncan and reached for the glass dish, he needed to try his buddy’s edibles. His face turned to confusion as he noticed the dish was empty.

“Wait, where are my edibles?”

“Where you left them.” Duncan said without looking over. He was busy texting whoever he had met the previous night. It seemed as though the night was over before it began at this point, and if he was lucky he’d be able to sneak away and have some fun.

“I may be high for the majority of the day, but I know when something isn’t really there.”

Bridgette ran in before the two could continue their conversation, “Guys, I just got off the phone with Noah.”

“And we care because?” Duncan asked. He rolled his eyes as Geoff nudged him to listen.

“Because…” Bridgette bagan, “…he has DJ and Courtney, who are currently causing some problems at the Starbucks he works at.”

“Did he get the Princess’s order wrong again?”

Bridgette glared at Duncan. Was there ever a time his brain didn’t immediately go to sarcasm? She knew he meant well, Courtney had only mentioned a few things before, but she definitely could not bring them up. Either way, Duncan’s facade was seriously starting to get old.

“No, they apparently ordered the whole menu. Noah yelled for DJ to put the fake coffee cup standee down because it’s not real before hanging up too.”

“I told you standees are creepily realistic!” Duncan exclaimed.

Geoff thought about what Bridgette was saying. He wondered what was going on with his friends. It was unlike them to leave without a proper scolding, and it was odd for them to have Noah of all people calling them for help. Geoff looked around the room and noticed his back door was slightly ajar, then he looked at the bowl in his hand. The wheels were slowly turning in his head before he looked at Duncan and Bridgette.

They too had noticed what Geoff came to realize, just a few seconds beforehand.

“Shit.” Geoff said as he and Duncan shot up from the couch. Bridgette grabbed Geoff’s keys and tossed them to him, “Let’s go.”
