Something you might have noticed if you've ever looked at old joshi, particularly AJW in the 80s, is that nearly half of the wrestlers are either androgynous or outright masculine. I've heard the explanation for why we got the Beauty Pair, that they were casting Jackie Sato as the Takarazuka otokoyaku and Maki Ueda as the musumeyaku in order to sell CDs to teenage girls. This was queer-coded, obviously, but acceptable to mainstream society as Takarazuka is a transient and exaggerated performance. (Its purported goal is for girls to perform masculinity so they can empathize with their future husbands... lol and lmao.)

However, that clearly wasn't the formula they were following for the Crush Girls: they're both butches! And so I've looked at the idol culture at the time that AJW's rival JWP explicitly tried to emulate, which is very different from today. Girls groups actually tried to appeal to teenage girls and not just adult men, with a youthful girlishness that did by avoiding sexuality often seem fairly androgynous. At least, that's my impression from looking at them, and maybe I'm totally off base. So we could posit that to appeal to teenage girl fans, wrestlers similarly had to look accessible in spite of their muscles and scariness. The alternative is too crazy to think about. That being that they promoted so many fucking butches to appeal to the kinds of girls that grow up to be lesbians! Which is when I present exhibit A, "Boy".

AJW, what is this? Well, it's a photobook by a wrestler named Kanako Nagatomo, who wrestled at the same time as the Crush Gals and was apparently very popular. Here's another insanity inducing tidbit, a video of her in a suit holding flowers and looking like your highschool boyfriend about to pick you up for the school dance. It's kind of the ultimate expression of the contradiction here, a constructed package for us to buy into yet only really emphasizing the looks these wrestlers chose to adopt every day of their lives.

How else do we explain this? Genuinely? Because we know there's always going to be queer women interested in handsome butches. The peculiar thing is this being broadcast on mainstream television on a channel for mothers and their children. What strange historical factors gave us such mainstream queerness in a way we'll likely never have again? I know why we don't have it anymore. Rossy Ogawa, who climbed up the ranks of AJW management, and then started his own promotions after its demise, thought joshi could only grow by marketing to men and dropped all the show business meant to appeal to women. And now our big joshi promotions are Stardom and TJPW, where almost everyone is extremely feminine and we release sexy photobooks (which I do enjoy, don't get me wrong).

Anyway, this is what Nagatomo looks like now. (Sona and I both immediately thought "Blue hair and pronouns??") Still androgynous by choice, but married. Maybe the simplest explanation is the wrestlers saw their peers presenting a certain way and liked the look of it enough to copy it, without anything else in mind.

It's been multiple months since the mansion incident

The legal case lasted a good while, but no evidence was found against any of the survivors, so they are okay now.

The blood did not leave their clothes. They got new ones.

Oliver Beebo wakes up another day in his apartment. While a lot of his nights have bizarre nightmares, this one was calm.

Even though they are no longer on vacation, Ángel still stayed on Oliver's apartment, but they plan on staying some time in the capital, just to see what it's like.

He uses all types of products he can find to heal his scar. Beebo doesn't mind much. it's part of the job, he says.

They've been living a calm and domestic day to day life, with ups and down.

The downs are, very down indeed

But the ups are more often.

They got matching tattoos of a sunrise, it makes them feel better.

Oliver has started taking cases again, but he's going for simpler ones.

He has told his fellow detectives to keep an eye out for seemingly supernatural cases.

Ángel has declared that he will invite himself to any case that involves a haunted house. Oliver doesn't fight him on it

They both have gained new fears

Ángel gets very anxious when they're separated for too long. He's also terrible at guessing what time it is

Oliver makes a great effort in overcoming his fear of heights. It's a work on progress.

He's also afraid of developing any kind of memory affecting disease. He keeps an incredibly detailed diary

They are getting help. It's slow and nonlinear, but they can always go to a warm home with a cuddly cat and a tight hug.

Vivi invites Oliver for an exclusive 2-player session with Ángel, as a test for his dnd abilities, she says.

While he's not that good at the role playing, he's very good at strategy. He really enjoys lawful characters.

They have fun.

Marigold and Nina were also invited. It made for a very chaotic group.

Ángel wants to start a new game so he can upload it to his newly made youtube channel

He wasn't satisfied with a normal 9 to 5, so he decided for a more creative job.

He's slowly rising, with titles such as "Doing the 100 babies challenge in The sims 4," "RLcraft hardcore for 100 days", "Top 10 facts about Dominion the jewel thief", "Finishing Overcooked with all stars ft. Vivi", and his personal favorite, "Speedrunning Escape rooms with my bf ❤️"

He claims to be Dominion's number one fan and sells plushies of him. Oliver will never admit he bought one.

Apparently, he is considered a cryptid in Ángel's channel, which he appreciates.

The now officially named Iraola family invites them to events quite often, it's very nice to have a friend group

Game nights are... quite extreme

Turns out teenagers can be very competitive and capable

Nadia and Ángel have a scoreboard set up. The winner gets decided at New years.

Oliver has managed to keep his throne as the master of any and all card games, but for how long?

He can't wait for Christmas, he plans on giving Simon a cool anti-eye contact hat.

Even though he's still terrified of the concept of fatherhood, he really enjoys being an uncle.

Speaking of such, Ángel had to meet his parents. It was awkward at first, but he managed to win them over with his knowledge of old cinema and pretty boy charm.

Oliver met the Ronald Mcdonald statue by Ángel's childhood house. He has a picture with it.

Ángel's mother was sweet, hardworking, and strict. She was not afraid of telling her son how he should be a better gentleman towards Oliver. It was... an eventful night. It's a good thing the lady enjoys mystery novels.

They celebrated Nadia's birthday in spring, cordially invited.

Everyone was sure Ángel would give her a gag gift, like a cd to a boy band she doesn't like or an ugly shirt.

He gave her a key code to an expensive editing software.

She was grateful but refused to say so. She plans on retaliating with an equally thoughtful gift.

They are slowly learning to get along, like a pair of cats that need to be separated by a door when they first meet.

In other news, Oliver recently received an autism diagnosis. He was very surprised. Ángel wasn't. He baked him a cake for the occasion.

The biggest event had to be the wedding

On a warm spring day, in the middle of a flower field, Marigold Iraola and Nina Coli got married.

There was some bad press about it, but a certain reporter was very enthusiastic about how beautiful of an union this was, unlike the previous one.

Marigold decided to disband Coli's company, making a new one herself.

It specializes in medical equipment.

They saw the newlyweds say their vows, Oliver couldn't help but yearn for a moment like that.

He and Ángel danced the evening away

Between the multiple friends of the wives waiting for the bouquet toss, there was a determined man in white

And like a cat to a shiny object

He jumped and got it

They decide spring is a great season for a wedding.

They don't decide which spring though

HI LOVELYYYYYYYYYY Um for some reason I can't use the enter key so here's everything in an ugly paragraph lol So, this has been on my mind for a bit, but what if the Phantom Troupe played like a "dangerous" version of Just Dance, like they can try and jeopardize each other. Or, randomly handing out wii remotes for the Tetris Dance from Just Dance and hoping that Uvo isn't the one person being carried. Idk if this made sense or not, but I was just wondering what you think!! I LOVE YOUUUUUUU

Hi! Thank you for the ask! Omg this sounds like so much fun but so chaotic 😭. For anyone who's pretty well-versed in Just Dance, you know how many songs there are in the series. However, I will be just smashing all the Just Dance releases into one CD, just pretend one exists haha

Phantom Troupe Attempt Just Dance

Someone stole a Wii system and a copy of Just Dance because why not. Now, the troupe has to figure out what to do with it, and the first suggestion made by Shalnark is to at least try it out before Chrollo sells it

They see why not, and now they're trying to point with the remotes on an old tv they were also planning to cell. There's a lot of songs and a lot of them, so they need to figure out how to do this in a fun way

"We could like...just throw someone in hot water," Machi suggests. it's a horrible idea, but she's only saying this thinking she won't be playing. However, everyone agrees and everyone HAS to play

Chrollo's in charge of throwing the remotes at anyone and they just randomly stop on a song. Turns out this is more chaotic than they expected

Feitan, for example, is tasked to do "You're The One That I Want" with Phinks and everyone can tell Feitan wants to punch Phinks for making fun of him while doing the whole thing. Also Feitan got a better score :/

Bonolenov had absolutely no trouble with "Rasputin" and honestly the entire Troupe was hyping him up

Tetris is done by Chrollo, Kortopi, Shizuku, and, well, Uvogin. Uvo ends up being the person they need to carry at the end and legit they all tell Kortopi not to worry about it haha

No one wants to do a duet with HIsoka, but poor Franklin :/

At some point Pakunoda and Machi end up doing one together and they're really good. Now everyone's getting competitive

They now make a bracket for competitive Just Dance. The songs are chosen by someone random and the person who wants to dance the least will be like the referee. Feitan says that he'll do it since he doesn't want to end up doing a dance ever again haha

Chrollo gets knocked out right away because he was against Hisoka. Change my mind Chrollo can't dance unless it's like a waltz or so haha

The winner ends up being Uvogin though, who was able to do splits, jumps, etc.

They might not get rid of the game right away, but now Shalnark wants to steal more games. Who knows, they might get a round of Mario Party in the near future

I know I've talked about posting a Euronymous interview but I haven't had time to type out anything new and I apologize. I'm taking all the Pelle interviews I've published on different social medias and posting them here until I find the time to sit down and search for other ones. As usual, Pelle's words are in italic and the interviewers are bold!

"Hi! What'sup after the release of your EP "Deathcrush"? Is it selling well?

- Deathcrush is sold out since nearly a year! But DC's demo wich is not limited is still available and we don't intend to stop selling it at 5$. The record was produced & pressed by us! If we would have had a commercial record label on us, the songs would have been different as they are, and they would never have allowed that front cover and everyone who got one knows why... After Deathcrush we had a long time of no release and no gigs. We got our actual rehearsal place in April '89, a great equipment and fount at last a place to live and so on.. Now we can really begin the hard work for realizing all our band's future plans!

Why did you change the line-up?

- Well, in fact we never changed it.... only Manheim (ex drummer) and Maniac (ex vocalist) left the band after Deathcrush's recording! I began in spring '88 and Hellhammer joined a few weeks later! Now we are: Dead: vocals; Hellhammer: drums; Necrobutcher: bass and Euroymous guitars. 

What do you think now of your first demo: "Pure fucking armaggeddon"?

- It's the same extremely bad sound quality now as it was before! In '86, when it came out and I first heard it (I didn't sing on that one). it was the rawest and noisiest crushing black metal I'heard till then. The songs we'll use from PFA live are carnage & PFA. We'll print carnage in tha same version as before, and PFA on vinyl, maybe on CD..... What I can say for sure is that Deathcrush will come out again on vinyl, with another cover. Unfortunately, we can't use the name "posercorpse" anymore, as we started our own record label called "Deathlike silence productions" and all our future records will be on DSP. We'll press not only our own records, but also those of some other bands. The first one will be "the awakening", an LP from Merciless from Sweden.

How is life in Norway? Tell me about your country.

- In almost every country you'll find people who would prefer to live elsewhere. I wanna live in Transylvania! I'm not norvegian, maybe another of us should answer this question. I think everything here is too far expensive and the Death Metal scene isn't big enough. There aren't so many satanic covens, the blasphemes in christian churches aren't grim enough and Scandinavia has also a rotten weather. I think that France is more human and nearer other european countries (compared to Norway). I've also heard all about those many ancient castles, I'll have to check that out some days.

What are you listening to now? Death metal I suppose!!

- The bands I prefer are: Mantas and Old Death/Necrovore, Azagthoth, Matricide, Immolation, Autopsy, Damnation, Merciless (SWE), Casbah, Necrophile, Deathspeed, Nausea, Imperator, Panic, Slashing Death, Mercilles death, Tormentor, Mutilated, Agressor and the new stuff on Loudblast.

So you know Mutilated!! Yeah! I think they're awful, shit with big head. Do u think this too?

- Mutilated is OK musically, but as I don't know those guys I can't say much about them, only that someone wrote to us once telling that Mutilated doesn't answer letters. So don't ask me what might go on between them and French public.

You plan an LP. Please Dead, talk to me 'bout it.

- We hope to get a studio in March '90 for the recording of "De Mysteris Dom Sathanas" LP. Exactly when it'll be out and the time for the recording depend of any possible new gigs appearing. We hope go to Russia for about 20-30 gigs at this year's end and if nothing appears after that then we can record in March. The title "De Misteriis.." comes from a book with ghost stories; ghosts made of human flesh with forced far beyond human imagination. Unfortunately this book seems to exist in only 1 examplary, but I still try to find another. Just now I can tell you which songs we'll use: carnage, the dark of the freezing moon, buried by time & dust, funeral fog, de mysteriis dom sathanas and  song we could call "when the vultures left" and one more without title yet! That makes 7 songs, but as we have 10 on the LP, we have to make 3 more. We still have 4 songs on DeathCrush and all those we composed for the russian tour! There's of course a difference in new track and that of DC, but to me they're in the same vein as our old stuff, maybe longer, with more solo parts! We did all improve technically since then; but it will be the same Death on it!

Are your lyrics funny, or do you speak about reality?

- Let's talk about the new lyrics... They're mostly done by me, and I take it very seriously! I'e been mad of horror since my birth and I'm insane of ancient, nearly forgotten... covens of pure evil!! Lonely castles in carpatians, in transylvania... vulture legends wich are so ancient but still alive in Transylvania! Black metal!!!!

Any future plans?

-I don't like future as I'm obsessed by the past! Hard to talk about it as everything goes so slowly! What will happen after the LP? We've got many plans for then but the biggest is our tour and the way we planned it: Eastern Europe (in its whole), many places in the west (I can't for sure it willbe France, but I would rather think so), southern and  central america and maybe Canada and Asia! My own idea would be to play in the places which invite us. We only wanna play in so "sick" as possible places, communist, with closed borders and impossible to see for tourists. That's all I can say now.

- If one of you, Satanic true evil horror Nosferatu insaniacs of immortality finds per chance the book "De Miteriis Dom. Satanas" and survives its contact, please contact me, so I can die in peace!!"

Thoughts While Watching Gilmore Girls, 2/18, "Back In The Saddle" Part 3, The Chilton Boss Babe Meeting

Part 1 Part 2 Part 2½ (Dean's Phone Stalking) I just got home from a stressful vacation where I lost my phone and so I'm immediately jumping back into these, because wishing for Dean Forrester and Lorelai Gilmore to get barbequed makes me feel balanced again. I had to dedicate an entirely seperate post to the Dean's Phone Harrassment scene in this episode so click the link for Part 2½ above if you haven't already checked out that highly disturbing ish. Michel's Mom is visiting the Inn. Who cares.

Seeing 2002, the year I graduated high school, in large, stark naked writing like that shakes me to my core. "Style Aid Corporation, RX 2002: A First Aid Kit For High School Students" is so goofy, you can't help but love it. The price for a fully stocked first aid kit (with or without lunchbox housing) varies but they are mostly under $30.

Dear Amazon Seller: Does your Paw Patrol lunchbox come with a 10 cd holder and two secret compartments for hiding drugs? What? It only holds 9 cds? I bid good day to you, sir.

PLEASE! I want this MLM meeting to go on FOREVER. There is no room for pleasantries and hospitality and dare I say ICE CREAM at the cut throat Lunchbox Meeting. (peeps ahead to what's ahead after this) Oh GOD its THIS.

It's just that thing where Dean stalks Rory some more and pulls another highly disturbing stunt that would have Lorelai putting Jess Mariano's head on a pike in the same situation but instead I'm sure she's just going to kiss his forehead and give him milk and cookies and then make sweet love to him.

So Nasty Ratz played first, I already saw them last year and there were so few people in the audience again 💔💔 my Czech boys deserve better. They played some songs from their upcoming album of which I recorded some and I would post the clips but I don't know if I'm allowed to leak them before they're released, might have to check back. Lots of eye contact with the guitarist and singer, guitarist gave me the set list, after their set I got the beer the singer had promised me the day prior via text. THEY SOLD CONDOMS WITH THE BAND LOGO AT THEIR MERCH TABLE 😭😭 with the literal reasoning "if some of you get lucky tonight but don't want to get lucky in 9 months, we sell condoms"

Second band was Superhorror but I already told the whole story here

Third was Bai Bang from Sweden and the singer basically only spoke German and told some stories from his childhood with his German mom who told him not to speak English when he goes to Germany and about his strict grandma who told him to shut up when he was singing at home but now he sings all the time (which he used to introduce their song I Love What You Hate). He made up a wild story about him being good friends with Anni-Frid from ABBA and some other stuff, but I'm pretty sure it was just for fun and he seemed to be a bit drunk already when they came on. He was cool and had funny vibes! Kept making faces at me and putting on the "x-ray specs" (just his sunglasses) and going "hoooh I can see through you all" in reference to their song of the same name. Sad that most people were either outside or way in the back of the bar, but great music and fun stories! He was also talking about a guy who used to he a long haired hard rocker and had his own spot in their tour bus but now he's a famous house DJ and he wrote their song My Favorite Enemy for him, but again I'm not sure how much truth is in there or who he's even talking about

Fourth was Speed Stroke (also Italians) and they were really good like last time I saw them and I got to sing a bit in the mic and one of their hot guitarists kept looking at me and spat out beer into the audience and I got some on my face and shirt. I didn't get the set list because another girl snatched it first 🙄 At the end of the set, the whole band was kicking and fighting each other and it was so fucking funny but I didn't catch it on video

Last one was Sister!! Second time seeing them and they were fucking great again, lowkey better vibes than at the bigger venue last year and hhhhh I loved it and also was one of the loudest to yell along to Bullshit & Backstabbing specifically lol. They played their first gig outside of Sweden at this bar back in 2006 so they're always looking forward to playing here but the singer said they don't know when they'll be back in Germany 💔💔 so we were supposed to go off to the closing song Scream for Pleasure like it's the last time they ever play a show and now I have a sore throat

As for merch, I got both of Superhorror's CDs, a Nasty Ratz keychain (because I already bought their CDs and shirt last time), three Sister CDs, a Sister patch (for free somehow?) and a Sister shirt that I forgot to take a photo of before I put it in the laundry but it's the same print as the cover of the album above the patch. I wanted to get the two Speed Stroke CDs I didn't get last year and a shirt and a Bai Bang CD but every time I checked the stand there was nobody there 😔

THE VINYL PRESS WISH LIST

I'm all for the return of vinyl records. I'm not crazy about the prices they're charging for them, but my biggest complaint is that record labels are not pressing the right titles. They're overlooking some of the best vinyl compilations ever made, and because of the passage of time, these are records that are not likely to see a reissue ever again. But all 10 of the titles here deserve another look.

The Very Best of Bird - Charlie Parker. A 2 record compilation of Parker's work for Dial Records. Warners issued it originally, and it was, and remains the best distillation of the music of the greatest genius in the history of Jazz. There are countless Parker collections and box sets. But this is the best of them all.

Winwood - Various Artists. Originally on United Artists, this 2 record set featured The Spencer Davis Group, Powerhouse, Blind Faith, and Traffic - all bands that featured Steve Winwood. It only goes as far as Traffic's first breakup, but track for track, it's perfect.

Directions & Circle In The Round - Miles Davis. When Miles Davis retired in the mid-70s, his record label, Columbia decided to raid the vaults for some records that would keep Miles's name out there in case he ever decided to un-retire. These two titles - both double albums - span Davis's first two decades with the label, and are the best overview of his most influential period.

Weird Scenes Inside The Goldmine - The Doors. The quintessential Doors on 2 records. It finally got a CD pressing a few years ago. So, I'm not sure the vinyl isn't out there now. But, if it is, it should never be allowed to go out of print.

Time Peace - The Rascals Greatest Hits. Atlantic's only mistake in issuing this was that it came a bit early. The band had a few more hits in them. There are other, generic looking Rascals collections out there, but this one - with its classic cartoon style cover needs a repress, and the four extra tracks that charted after it came out could be added.

The Road Goes On Forever - The Allman Brothers Band. If I had a dollar for every Allman Brothers Band collection out there, I'd be rich enough to afford to date Taylor Swift. But this 2 record set has all the essentials, and a gorgeous cover as well.

Purple Passages - Deep Purple. Warners issued this 2 record set when it obtained the rights to the three LPs the band cut for the Tetragrammaton label. They distilled the best of those three for this collection, and it's the perfect set to represent the band's early years. Cool cover art, too.

The History of Eric Clapton - Various Artists. This 2 record set was issued when it looked as if Eric Clapton might not be with us much longer. He was holed up battling heroin addiction, and his record label kept the product flowing hoping to keep his name out there while the world awaited his return. (And if he didn't return, they had plenty of titles in the pipeline to sell when the demand came in the wake of his passing.) Of course, he did survive, and continued to make records for more than 50 years. But this set is the perfect overview of his first eight years, and includes his work with The Yardbirds, John Mayall, King Curtis, Delaney & Bonnie, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek & The Dominos along with some solo stuff, and some session work. As with Winwood, it's a great place to begin your collection of Clapton on record.

Michigan Rocks - Various. Originally on the Seeds & Stems label, this single LP captures the excitement, and the brilliance of the Michigan Rock scene of the late 60s, and early 70s. Seger, Nugent, Iggy & The Stooges, Mitch Ryder & Detroit, Frost, SRC, The Rationals, MC5, and Third Power - they're all here. This one cries out for an expanded edition. A second LP could add Grand Funk, Frijid Pink, Suzi Quatro, and many more. A hard rock classic.

Won't sugar coat anything since you don't like back handed things I'll say i agree with anon. some of the relies that you gave to these chart related things shows that you are not that much around the charts of these songs so you don't know much. Just like anon said Geffen is their company who restocks Albums for all the members so they shouldn't be picky about who's CDs they restock and who's don't. All memebrs should be given same level of support atleast act based on the demand? Cause i remember them not restocking LC from 7months till now and just yesterday Along with v, yg (idk if other members' CD were released or not) that too just 235 without any notice and that too got sold out within 5min. They have been restocking seven's CDs for so many times since it's released even tho the previous CDs were not sold out in the first place so how you gonna restock CDs of a song who's previous CDs are right there without moving sells but the fans are tagging and almost beginning you to restock LC but you didn't move your finger at all?? How does that makes sense to U? Then you say it makes sense this and that like if the demand is there why you as a company won't fullfil it???

What doesn't make sense is the idea that Geffen is showing preferential treatment. If they are, it's from a business perspective. I don't even know the point of this post. I mean, not restocking albums impacts charting, right? I didn't consider that, because, like you said, I don't know much about charts and don't keep up with stuff like this when it comes to BTS. I occasionally see these types of posts but not often.

However, you don't have to restock an album only when it sells out. If you have a huge hit, or a song with huge potential, like Seven, you restock it so it never sells out and you keep making a profit.

Obviously, there is demand for Layover and Face so I don't know why the CDs weren't restocked. Are the suppliers the same? I don't know about these things, but if the company chose to only restock Seven because they had to prioritize it, then it also makes sense because Seven was literally one of the biggest songs of the year. But they should be able to restock all their biggest artists. I don't know. But the thing is, there are also things you don't know, on Geffen's side?

Like, yeah, Jungkook is being promoted a lot more and on a bigger scale, and from the remixes to discounted albums, etc. they're going all out on every level to support him. But SB and Bang PD are using him as a pilot for their US expansion so there's that. However, all of this is business? Businesses can be terribly incompetent and Hybe for sure is sometimes but these people know how to make money so it's weird that everyone's making it seem like the members aren't being given a chance to best Jungkook because Jungkook is getting preferential treatment. If they thought Jimin could do better than JK, they would've promoted him more, but I doubt Jimin wanted to do everything Jungkook has been doing or releasing an English pop album, and without that...

Okay, I'm done with these posts because I keep saying the same things over and over again and don't even understand what I'm defending anymore. I'm also unsure of my own opinion. I don't even know what's right or wrong right now.

listening (podcast): making my way through the Gundam Wing episodes of Great Gundam Project. love to hear queer leftists talk about Gundam. it's fun to listen to now that I know more about Gundam, because when I watched Wing myself I knew literally nothing, and it's cool to get extra context but also cool to hear that some of my initial analysis still holds up. has the (un?)fortunate side effect of constantly making me wish I were watching Gundam

also obligatory shout out to Media Club Plus, a Hunter x Hunter rewatch podcast just started by some of the Friends at the Table folks, which I'm also enjoying a lot (this *is* a recommendation. please listen to Media Club Plus)

listening (music): so turns out I mostly listen to music when I'm driving these days, and right now the cd in my car's cd player is Avril Lavigne's Let Go, which is causing me to think a lot about a world in which Fire Emblem 3 Houses was an anime and there could be a sylvix+dimilix amv set to Complicated. also I've been fondly remembering that one wangxian sk8er boi amv that makes me cry every time I watch it

reading: recently finished The Archive Undying by Emma Mieko Candon. lots of divine-mechanical body horror and also a big win for fans of body sharing. very tasty, lots to chew on. I think I would have more to say about this one if I'd read it more quickly, but it was the book that I read a chapter or two every night before bed because that's a load-bearing part of my routine, and I think that meant that I sometimes lost track of some of the plot threads and shifting allegiances & motivations

currently reading The Water Outlaws by S.L. Huang, which I'm not far into but it's fun so far, and. sighs. Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo. unfortunately because I couldn't remember exactly what happened in the books to properly compare it to the second season of Shadow & Bone I committed to rereading the whole series and, well, this could be compelling political intrigue except that's not where the focus is (it feels like there's a lot of words wasted on reiterating who the main characters are but not in particularly interesting ways or ways that show them changing very much, at least so far) so it's just simply not compelling to me

watching: rewatching Hunter x Hunter (2011) along with the Media Club Plus coverage. only on episode 6 so far but man what a good show

with my roommate, we've been slowly making our way through Elementary, because it's good to have on in the background while working on other things, and I do enjoy a competently written mystery. we also watched. uh. the Bionicle movies. those sure are movies that exist to sell toys to children. like, there's stuff in there that could be really interesting. as a kid I probably would've been obsessed. I'm glad I've seen them. they're not ""good movies""

now, this past weekend, instead of making any progress in any of the shows I was already watching, or fic I was writing, or anything like that, I saw a tumblr post that made a very compelling argument for spending the entire weekend watching all 16 episodes of 2021 k-drama The Devil Judge. this is a show for people who watched Tiger & Bunny and wanted Yuri (you know, everyone's favorite T&B side character, the guy who's a vigilante murderer and also a judge and also very sad) to be the main character (it's me. I wanted that.) anyway. this one's gonna be rattling around in my brain for a while. it's a dystopian legal drama with a significant helping of the gothic (gothic is here defined as when you're forced by circumstance to stay at the mysterious big house of an older wealthy man with secrets). it's about, among other things, corporate greed, the rise of fascism, systemic judicial inequality, the self-destructive catharsis of revenge, whether justice is possible in an unjust society, and having an intense homoerotic bond with your hot morally dubious coworker

oh yeah I'm also keeping up with the Ahsoka show because I was cursed at birth to care about Star Wars. I wish I liked it because I love Ahsoka and Sabine as characters but it's just simply not a well-made television show. really suffers from over-reliance on their Volume soundstage and various other issues that seem to stem from uninspired direction, but I've been especially disappointed with so many of the blocking choices

playing: finally getting back into playing Ace Attorney 5, which I paused literally three months ago and didn't pick up again until this week. there are parts of the game I've enjoyed (Athena is a cool character even if I dislike her mood matrix thing both mechanically and thematically; the mock trial conceit of 5-3 is fun; I like Blackquill & his bird) but other parts I do not enjoy (the transphobia oh my god I hoped I was free after getting past the homophobia & transmisogyny in 5-2 and then got hit with whatever the fuck they were doing with Robin in 5-3 please Ace Attorney be normal about trans people I am begging you)

making: we recently got B. Dylan Hollis's cookbook Baking Yesteryear, and made some maple-squash gems from the 1920s. not too much to say about these, they're nice muffins, tasty, not too hard to make. I think I would probably double the amount of cinnamon next time though

drinking: it's nog season which means it's time for the return of one of my favorite seasonal mixed drinks: eggnog (pumpkin, since that felt the Most seasonal) with a splash of Kraken spiced rum

writing: picking away at editing my t4t yurivain fic that was originally meant to be for Fire Emblem Trans Week, which was like a month and a half ago now. it's fine. everything is fine. anyway here's some lines:

- au makima is still the leader of shit she has special teams? idk. al haitham is the Glue Team Leader. don't remember who else is on glue team. there are a couple others that come to mind too , but they're all technically getting dissolved or smth due to either massive danger or hugely foreseen deaths or something idk. she's nicer in this au. if she was a real person that cares about her subordinates rather than being the way that she is.

- an old lady comes onto the back of the bus through the door she's not to be trusted. - anyway she dissolved glue team. the facial expression he made when she said that was interesting so I kept trying to drag the bar back to see it again but I was on a tiny touchpad which made it difficult. she gave him a kiss onnthr cheek which scared him really bad bc she never acted like this before so obviously we were on the way to somw kind of great danger? but he smiled anyway.

- anyway the the roof of the bus was ripped off. we were driving on a road that resembled roller coaster tracks and were travelleing at a brisk 45mph on a 70 degree angle slope that went down for a veeylong time into a mess of other roads thatmore lookee like some tangled up yarn. thebsky was blue! great weather! disbanded glue team & at least 1 maybe 2 of the other special teams all jumped out.

- then I was on the bus waiting for it to get to my stop. i was peeking in on the rich bald man's stuff in(he has a nice laptop and a lot of paperwork) and then suddenly I was autosorted into his seat I apologized to him (he was now forced across the aisle) & he went hmm & ignored me, so at the next stop I jumped back t 5th seat on the left and got back. it made the rigt turn onto the street by my house but I became aware that raiden's E now places electro traps on the ground so my sister & I would have to dodge those to get off the bus

Alice Cooper / Brutal Planet - Cold Machines (probably not my favorite song by him generally speaking but probably my favorite song on that particular album on which I like every single one of the songs. The only singer on this list I've seen live on stage - twice - and intend to see again, fingers crossed. He means so much to me and my obsession with Your Dad's Music™ is entirely his fault because he started it when I heard Poison for the first time in 2008)

3. Limpbizkit / Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water - My Way (listen, if the music sounds like something that would be played at a small independent skateboard store that sells oversized hoodies it's very likely right up my alley, no matter if it's rap, rock or reggae or a mix of all of these genres)

4. Linkin Park / Meteora - Somewhere I Belong (I'd say I like Hybrid Theory just the same, maybe even more, but it's harder to pick a favorite song on there. One of the bands that means the most to me but that I hardly ever actually listen to anymore)

5. HIM / Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights - Beautiful (I remember so clearly the first time listening to this album in 2005~ish, I got the CD from the library and kept returning it just to immediately borrow it again until I finally bought it from the local record store. Feels like a melancholic summer night just after sundown)

6. Led Zeppelin / Mothership - When The Levee Breaks (yeah that's a Best Of Album, so what. It has all the good shit. Feels like late summer to me and I always listen to it in the car throughout September)

7. Metallica / Black Album - Wherever I May Roam (that's probably a controversial opinion, I know the black album is a breaking point in the band history for some fans. also, I don't necessarily consider myself a die hard fan despite literally owning a t-shirt lol. I do like this album though and have a lot of memories connected to it.)

8. Mötley Crüe (derogatory) (I have been listening to their music A LOT lately while literally thinking they're trash but not being able to fucking stop? I don't know which new mental illness I have discovered in me) / Theater of Pain - Home Sweet Home (here's the thing: Mötley Crüe is not even remotely in my top ten of favorite bands and theater of pain itself is okay I guess? However this fucking song? This FUCKING song?? Yes I DO take you to my heart. Yes I DO feel you in my bones. No I REALLY never feel left all alone when I just take this song. 😭❤️😭❤️✊😔❤️️ I love this song so much I've been considering getting a fucking tattoo of it for well over ten years now, that's how much it means to me. That's long enough to decide about a tattoo, right?? I should do it. Easily in my top five of favorite songs of all times EVER. Play this at my funeral I'm not even kidding)

We have absolutely no indicators I'm going out from these people about what's going on that's what a weird. Just kind of sitting here walking around in circles doing the regular thing and that not much is happening. Cleaning out the pots!

My preamp is 40 ish years old. Works fine and better than my previous 50 ish year old preamp. I had noticed some noise and strange behavior at some of the quieter volume settings. Scrrrtch Squeeek. My wife is always saying "turn it down." Classic dirt or corrosion in the potentiometers. (pots) (AKA volume controls)

The standard fix is contact cleaner. The only one I could find that was tried and true for electronics was Deoxit. Many blogs claimed many things about stuff from hardware and autoparts stores. Excuse me if I don't believe everything I see online.

Deoxit comes in several flavors and eBay or amazon will sell it to me for stupid money and free shipping (not including tax and duty). I found a real live local brick and mortar store that had it. It was a professional supply store as it only was open during the week and business hours.

I was able to get there over lunch hour and buy a can of Deoxit D5. Not cheap, but half what the online thieves wanted.

Next step was to pull the SP14 out of the rack and undo 8 machine screws on the top. Audio Research really builds things nicely. Neat cable runs, and almost pretty circuit boards. (SAE had the lock on really pretty circuit boards back in the day).

BUT

They did not build it with spray cleaning the pots and switches in mind. First thing is all the knob controls are soldered directly to a narrow PC board mounted upside down. Then the pots were very high end ALPS which are nice small SEALED boxes. They had some very small openings in a few almost impossible to get to places.

This is not going to be easy. It wasn't. I started with the top off and tried to maneuver the spray tube into what holes I could find. This aint working! Then I put the front facing down resting on those handles. (OH, that's what they're for!) The rotary selectors were pretty open so they got a good blast. Spray and twiddle the knobs for 20 or 30 seconds. Repeat.

I assumed (hoped) the holes in the ALPS pots (volume and balance) went into their guts and gave them a blast and twiddle and came back to repeat.

During this I observed something. There are some brass contact strips on the selectors that were brown. Dirt? So I got a Qtip and gave it a shot of cleaner and rubbed the strips. They were bright brass again. The Qtip was black. WTF? This was not corrosion. I cleaned them all off I could get to. I also rubbed a bit on a metal plate holding the power transformer to the side panel it was filthy too.

About the only thing I can figure is one of the previous owners was a smoker. Hey my mom smoked a bit and lived to her 90s. I have never taken up the habit nor my wife or our kids. I thought about how I could give the whole device a bath. Then no lets just do another round of blast and twiddle and hope those holes actually do go into the guts of the pots.

I also gave the rear RCA plugs a shot and worked at the insides with a cut off Qtip stick. There was a bit of stuff in there.

I put it back together and let it sit for an hour. I set all the knobs and selectors to where they had been and turned it back on. No smoke that's good. Fire up the Iphone through the CD player and let it run.

Now even though the IPhone was set to lossless and high resolution or whatever they call it, it is only fairly good, about the same as a CD. But only as good as a good CD. (I am a vinyl guy remember?) I heard a difference.

I try to always qualify my judgements between better and different. Things are often different, but not better. Better is always different. This was different, and I think significantly better. There was gunk on my controls and the cleaner cleaned it. It sounded smoother nicer cleaner, it was better.

So glad I did not hurt anything.

I really should zap the Amplifier input and the speaker wire connectors. Though I did give the binding posts a bit of a twist.

One of those "Ask Paul" things on PS audio mentioned that sometimes when people swap speaker cables they are better because working the binding posts at each end actually clears corrosion from the wires. Bare copper (or silver for "those guys") will corrode out in the air and normal humidity. I bought some new speaker wire some time ago. Heavier gauge but still just two conductor. It is a bit of a pain to run. Maybe I should do that and hit it with the cleaner at the same time.

Conclusion: If you have some old equipment with knobs and selectors giving it a clean really helps.
