Alien Covenant

I liked Prometheus. I really did. 

I don’t like Alien Covenant. I don’t know if I’m more mature and more sensitive to the blunders in this one, or if the bad decisions in Covenant are just that much worse, but wow there were a lot of bad decisions in this movie. Why would you not wear environmentally-sealed suits when exploring an unknown planet. Why would your group split up on like three separate occasions to look for someone on a dangerous planet.

Like, in the previous Alien movies the fuckups the characters made had a kind of logic to them. Like, in Alien it’s because they’re space truckers who should never be expected to deal with this fuckery and that’s where the problems come from. In Covenant it feels more like the problems come from the characters just being incompetent. Like, the quarantine scene. That one really got under my skin (pun intended? you decide) because of how useless the characters involved came off. Which I guess is kind of unfair given how it’s probably more realistic for there to be a lot of screaming and panicking but it doesn’t make for very compelling viewing, you know?

The neomorph is cool though. I like them and want to be their friend. But they deserve a better movie.

Like Prometheus, watch Alien Covenant if you like morons getting horribly alienkilled.

Now on to the spoils.

We didn’t need more fucking David. Get out of this movie, David. I get that his presence plays into the movie’s theme of family, I get that. But David doesn’t add a whole lot to the Alien canon at this point. He should have been found dead in the Engineer city killed by his own experiments and the crew could have pieced everything together from his notes. And we certainly didn’t fucking need that twist at the end. David doesn’t deserve to be a recurring villain for the Alien series, we were done with him after Prometheus. We care about the xenomorphs, not the androids. And how come we never see exactly where that last xenomorph came from. Like, David brought it onto the ship but how. Why the fuck did the captain (who was more annoying than Gorman, by the way) touch the egg.

Speaking of which, I also have beef with the pathogen. I’m sorry but spores just aren’t as interesting as a facehugger. It’s cool that the spores cause something to start to grow inside you spontaneously like that, but they don’t have charisma of a facehugger, you know?

I’m gonna go angrily read some Alien novels.
