calm after the storm; alex walter

summary: a storm causes y/n to stay at the walter's house overnight. after trying to get comfortable in almost every brother's room, alex's room is the last one with the light on.

it was late at the walter's house. y/n was invited over by danny during rehearsal for their spring play. she stayed for dinner, and the lot was finishing cleaning the board game they played multiple rounds of.

it started raining heavily almost an hour ago. winds started picking up, and thunder crashed every so often.

she was quick to grab her things out of danny's room. she passed by some of the walter boys, and made her way to the front door where katherine and george were.

"hey sweetie, you ready to go?" katherine asked while slipping her jacket on. shr agreed to take y/n home, knowing the girl's parents were out of town this weekend.

the two were about to slip out of the house, when a loud crash of thunder echoes and the lights shut off.

"damnit, again!" george exclaims from the kitchen. katherine looks out one of the windows and gasps, making y/n join her. the rain picked up even more, the wind was blowing stronger and the roads were in no condition for driving. the thunder and lightning increased, which only made y/n's nerves grow. she wasn't the biggest fan of thunderstorms. if she was in her own home, she would've felt a little better, but going home was impossible tonight.

katherine started taking her jacket off, "why don't you stay here tonight, is that okay?"

y/n simply nods.

"alex," katherine calls into the living room. he was busy playing a video game with isaac. "can you grab y/n some pajamas?"

alex stands from the couch, "sure, come on y/n."

y/n follows alex upstairs and into his room. y/n notied the house was quiet, almost too quiet. she soon realized most of the family members were asleep.

alex finds a pair of shorts and old t-shirt for y/n, and hands them to her.

"thanks alex," she smiles. alex and y/n didn't talk usually. she was always over hanging out with danny, either helping him with lines for a play, or just watching a movie together.

"you can uh- change in here if you want," alex offers.

"thank you," you smile again, and watch as he walks out of his room to give you privacy. y/n can't help but slightly chuckle at how nervous alex seemed whenever she was around. granted, she does have a crush on the walter boy, she wonders if he's nervous like that around other girls.

katherine was sweet enough to offer the couch for you to sleep on, instead of sharing a room with one of the boys. after maybe an hour of y/n being downstairs, she feels a dip in the couch, and isn't surprised to see danny turning on the tv. y/n notices a few lights were on, she guessed the power was back on.

y/n sits up, and rubs her eyes due to the bright tv.

"did i wake you?" danny asks, "i swear i was trying to be quiet."

y/n shakes her head, "no, no danny it's okay."

"you can go sleep in my bed, i might be down here for the night."

y/n gladly takes up danny's offer. she grabs the blanket off the couch and says goodnight to him, before heading up the very creaky stairs.

y/n enters danny and cole's shared room. her eyes aren't even closed for ten minutes before cole starts to snore, possibly louder than the thunder outside.

y/n groans, knowing she'll get no sleep if she stays in this room. she grabs the blanket again, and quietly walks out of the room. the room right next to cole and danny's is isaac and lee's. she knocks, however can't even open the door fully, as she looks down and is met with the messist floor known to mankind. she definitely won't be sleeping in their room.

y/n then passed by nathan and jordan's room. she heard nathan's guitar from outside the door, and heard jordan muttering something. she was guessing jordan was filming something, and she didn't want to bother his process. she remembers the last time she interrupted one of his videos, never again.

y/n easily walks by parker and benny's shared room. she knew the two youngest siblings would be asleep, and didn't want to disturb them.

this only leaves one room left, alex's room.

she knew he wasn't asleep, as she sees a dull light coming from the bottom of the door. she knocks quietly, before hearing a confused 'come in'.

"oh, hey," alex sits up in his bed, "i figured you'd be asleep."

y/n shakes her head, "no, uh danny came downstairs, then i tried to sleep in his room but cole started snoring. and i didn't want to bother any of the others," she now stands there awkwardly, still holding the blanket she took from the couch.

alex scoots over in his bed, and pats the blanket, "you can join me," he smiles but his instantly starts stuttering, "unless you don't want to, of course. i figured i'd offer cause you said you couldn't sleep-"

y/n's laugh cuts him off, "i'd love to," she sends him a smile as she climbs besides alex.

she notices the book in his lap, with a bookmark placed halfway inside, "i'm guessing you can't sleep either?"

alex shakes his head, "just had some things on my mind. reading usually helps me clear my head," he gestures to the book.

the two sit in a comfortable silence for a few moments before y/n breaks it. "did you finish the history assignment for mr. norbit's class?"

alex shakes his head, "no not yet, i think i have a couple pages left."

y/n nods in response, before busying herself with her hands. she realized the two don't talk much outside of school, or their history work.

she also realized she's never been this nervous around alex before.

"what do you have on your mind?"

alex turns to the girl, his eyes break away from his book with confusion filling them.

y/n gestures to the book in his hands, "you said you reading helps you clear your head. do you want to talk about anything?"

alex knew he couldn't tell y/n what was on his mind. the very girl he couldn't stop thinking of was sitting right next to him. he couldn't remember a time where he didn't like y/n. he also couldn't help but get the feeling cole had liked her, and he didn't want a redo of what happened with paige.

alex simply shakes his head, "no, no it's kinda stupid."

"whatever it is, i won't think it's stupid."

alex tosses his book aside and faces y/n, "there's this girl, and i feel like she's falling for cole and his dumb cole effect. i mean every single girl i fall for, he has to show up and swoop her off her feet."

y/n doesn't say anything at first, which worries alex. she only leans forwards on her knees and wraps her arms around his shoulders. it doesn't take long for alex to hold onto the girl's waist.

y/n pulls away, making both her and alex's arms fall at their sides. she sits back against the headboard.

"so who's the girl you're head over heels for?"

alex laughs and shakes his head again, "i can't tell you that."

"what, why?" y/n groans with a smile, "how am i supposed to help you with girl trouble if i can't know what girl we're talking about?"

alex turns his head to avoids y/n's eyes, and his voice is much quieter than before. "it's you," he pauses, "the girl is you."

y/n's heart instantly warms, and she can't help but giggle, "you thought i fell for the cole effect?"

alex shrugs before running his hands over his face, "i- i don't know, every girl i like, cole ends up taking her from me."

y/n scoots over closer to alex, and rests her head on his shoulder. her voice is soft.

"cole could never take me away from you."

alex turns his body quickly, now facing y/n, "what do you mean?"

y/n giggles, "the cole effect hasn't worked on me, and it never will. now the alex effect, that hit me hard," she laughs more, only making alex laugh as well.

"the alex effect?" he recites.

"yeah," y/n smiles before playing with her chipped nail polish, "you make me nervous, and whenever someone walks into a room i'm hoping it's you. you're basically always on my mind."

a chuckle from alex cuts y/n off.

"what?" she asks.

"i make you nervous? i can't believe i was able to do that!" he laughs, and a blush appears on y/n's cheeks.

another comfortable silence feels alex's room, before alex reaches his hands out to hold onto y/n's. her eyes meet his, and she swore she felt her heart stopped. she watched as he looked between her eyes, and then down to her lips.

alex leans forward slightly. y/n gasps as she feels his breath over her parted lips. she takes her hands out of alex's to rest them on his cheeks, making her pull his face towards hers.

call it cheesy, but y/n felt fireworks once alex's lips were on hers. she's thought about kissing the boy before, but never imagined it like this. his lips were soft, and his hands were gentle as they moved to her waist.

alex turns his head to deepen the kiss, and pushes slightly, making y/n lean back onto his bed.

the kiss deepens a bit more, before the two pull away to take in a few deep breaths.

y/n plays with the hair at the base of his neck, "how long have you been waiting to do that?"

alex chuckles, "oh, only forever."

he leans back down to kiss her again and cuts off her intoxicating giggle in the process.

Just finished watching ‘My Life with the Walter Boys’ and I have some thoughts:

- I can tell I’m too old to watch this shit bc the weird love triangle with two brothers just gave me the ick.

- Jackie was edging on Bella Swan territory but she was nice and actually had some ambition beyond being obsessed with a boy so she was slightly better. Still like nearly every other character in the show more than her though.

- Also they gave my girl the most ugly boring name - Jackie Howard? Really?

- I wanted to see more of both Nathan and Danny, such sweethearts. Also if there is a season 2 - Danny and Erin pls!!!!

- WHY DIDN’T WE GET TO SEE THE PLAY?!

- Nathan and Skylar, adorable but how Skylar resisted those huge blue eyes for so long is anyone’s guess.

- Alex was a bit of a whiney little bitch but Cole was INSUFFERABLE. Why did he do literally anything he did? He was an asshole who nearly redeemed himself before stripping it all away at the end.

- Cole ruining his mums speech is what made him unforgivable for me, what a tool.

- Felt sorry for his friend too even though he was kind of an asshole, he was obviously just trying to cling onto their friendship and Cole just didn’t seem to care much.

- Basically Cole is a selfish asshole who isn’t nearly as deep as he thinks he is.

- Kiley deserves the world, Alex doesn’t deserve to even make direct eye contact with you sweetie, he has no taste. JUSTICE FOR KILEY!

- Tara also deserved better than that teacher guy.

- Loved Grace as well, she reminded me of myself at that age.

- If there’s a season 2 my girl Erin will become my favourite character I know it. She’s not quite the ‘bitchy cheerleader with a secret heart of gold’ character I love, but she was getting there.

- Love Katherine. And George is HOT!

2 weeks later...

I was on my way home. There was a kind of pumpkin- or autumn festival in the park, although it wasn't actually even really autumn? 🧐 Anyway! That's why I decided to go through the park today.

As I passed some autumn stands, I suddenly saw Daniel with a girl.😱 I quickly turned around/back, to hid somewhere on the side. Still, I risked another look because.... somehow I couldn’t believe it. But yea, there he was, with a girl!!😢 ... It hurt me sm to see him with her. I gotta get away, I thought!!! I felt really sick that moment.🤢 In RL, there was a Mc Donald's just a few steps away. So I rushed there to go to the toilet. But.... holly shit!! That damn Mc Donalds!!! I ran into a huge glass door!!! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️😄I thought it was open. Yup! SOO embarrassing!! However, after I peed, I got back out. As I was walking out the door, Daniel was standing there. With lowered eyes, I tried to pass him unnoticed but....

Daniel: Hi!... What are you doing here? Are you alone?

Me: Don't you remember? Today is Tuesday! I just had class. I'm going home. 😞

Daniel: Yea... Did you see me earlier? I felt like I was being watched.

Me: YES! I saw you! That sucks, yk?😫 .... Ugh, I- I wasn’t prepared to see you.... here today with your new.... crush. How about you sign the divorce papers? 😒😢

Daniel: Sorry..... I'm on it. Ok?... I gotta go.

Me: Wait!

Chapter 1: Everything's going to be all right

Summary: Merlin sighed as he hung his head. The organization was going to be a mess by the time he got back to sort things out. Arthur betrayed them and paid dearly for his arrogance. Galahad had died in a suicide mission, thanks to Arthur. He didn’t want to think about the number of people who were either dead or barely alive after Valentine's incident.

Received 13th of March at 16.43 “Hey, I hope you will call me back soon. I know you are working and probably not available, but my mother is driving me crazy and she doesn't want to take care of Alex while I'm at work and you perfectly know I can't bring him with me. And it's time you usually are at home so I hope you will be back soon. Love you babe.”

Received 18th of March at 12.32 “Hi daddy, Mom told me that I can call you Daddy. I drew a picture of us having a picnic and you are playing with me. Mummy said that you need time in your work and I don't need to worry about you because you will come home. I don't like Mrs. Lewinsky she smells funny and doesn't want to give me any sweets... “Who are you talking with?" “Daddy...” “Can I? Hamish? Hamish...? Received at 16.55 “Hamish? Could you please answer the phone? I don't know what is happening!? The town just went crazy! God damn it ... Get the fuck out of here or I'll rip your heart out of your chest! ...”

Last message received at 16.59 “... I am fucking bleeding... Uh... Alex sweetheart everything is fine but you need to go to your room and close the door with a key all right?” “Yes Mummy, what is that?” “Nothing darling it's juice. Mommy split her juice. Go to your room now, all right? Max please if this happens again... Hamish, I can't control myself what if I hurt Alex? Good Lord... I need you I'm so scared... If I don't call again... Hamish, I love you, I love you so so much...”

He sat in silence for a few moments, looking at the monitor thoughtlessly. Once again he listened to the record hoping that another message would appear but it didn’t.

“Oh for fuck's sake... “, he mumbled angrily, dialling the number. First attempt, no one answered. He tried once again. “Oh, come on! Please pick up the phone. Do it, do it!”, but the phone continued to ring. Seconds before he decided to disconnect he heard something, ”Hello? Is anyone there?”

“Daddy?” Hearing his voice was the biggest relief in his life.

“Alex, yes it's Daddy. Can you give the phone to Mom? I need to speak to her...”

“Mummy is sleeping on the floor. She doesn't want to wake up Dad.” He froze for a moment at those words, suddenly feeling numb.

“Alex, listen to me very carefully. I'm calling for an ambulance and you need to try to wake up Mummy - is that clear?” he asked, trying to sound calm.

“I called for help before your call.”

“Good work son, I'll be home soon. Just try to wake her up, please.” He heard sniffling on the other end and knew his son was close to tears. He could even see his son’s trembling chin, which always came before the flood of tears.

“I'm scared Dad...”

He's about to cry , he thought. The thought crossed his mind several times during that conversation. Why am I surprised? He's only five, for love of God.

“I know Alex; you’re a very brave boy,” his voice trembled a little at the thought of his wife lying on the ground, bleeding out, and a five-year-old child trying to help her. “Mom needs you son, you must wake her up at any cost. Spill water on her or try to pinch her. All right?”

“Are they coming again? The people? They were angry,” Alex sniffed loudly, trying to hold back his tears.

Max heard some muffled movements and moans in the background. He just hoped that his wife was still there and that she would make it.

“No, they're not coming back. Is over now. Alex?”

“Yes, Dad,” the little boy replied.

“I would give up everything to be there with you. Give you a big hug for being so brave, baby son. Everything is going to be all right. I can hear the ambulance from here. Can you see it?”

“Alex, baby?’ a faint voice called from the floor.

“Mom! It's Dad! He's fine.” Small gasp escape from his mouth when he heard it – she was alive.

“Hamish? Is that really you?” she asked weakly.

“Yes darling it's me...” he sighed in relief, “How bad it is?”

“Shot in the arm and leg and I think I was stabbed but it's nothing compared to what I'm going to do to you, you bald fool!” she said vigorously. He laughed quietly; it couldn’t be that bad if she had the strength to threaten him like that.

“I love when you talk like that to me but for now, you need to go to the hospital with Alex. I'll see you two soon. I love you.”

That was the last thing she heard before she lost her consciousness again.

She groaned as she pried her eyes open. The room was rather dark, which didn’t help with trying to remember what happened. She frowned, trying to see if something would come back to her – any memory about what happened before she woke up here – and then it hit her: that strange attack. There was a man who appeared out of the blue with a gun pointed at her and one with a knife. In that exact moment she felt an overpowering urge to kill them, actually anyone in that moment. She closed her eyes as she recalled snapping out of the strange trance, surrounded by two bloody corpses. She killed them – she had to – no she wanted to, oh dear Lord, she wanted to do it. She felt such satisfaction when she stabbed that stranger. In that moment, she swore that holding that knife in her hand was the best thing she ever felt. She felt united with it and she wanted to kill someone else. She went out and joined the mess of people were fighting in the streets. She got shot by someone but didn’t care much about it, as she threw the knife into her shooter’s chest.

I did it. I killed all those people, she thought, horrified. It was… a darker part of my soul. Dear Lord have mercy on me – I wanted to do it. I wanted to kill. She opened her eyes, which were starting to fill with tears. What have I done?

She couldn’t move her right arm which was bandaged and resting on the blanket. Despite the medications she was probably given, the pain was excruciating. Not to mention she also felt pain in her back and left leg. She tried to move but the pain became more unbearable, making her cry out.

“Don’t move. You were shot in the arm and you twisted your ankle. Try to relax, okay? Everything’s going to be all right,” a voice informed her. She looked at her left and smiled, relieved to see it was her husband.

“Oh darling, I thought you were dead,” she whispered. “You weren’t answering my calls and I was so scared that…”

“I thought I almost lost you,” he said as he moved closer. “I nearly had a heart attack when Alex told me you were lying on the floor unconscious.”

“Where is he? Is he all right?” the woman asked. She tried to look for her son without straining herself but couldn’t see him anywhere.

“Yes, he’s in company of one of my colleagues, relax!” Hamish replied as he stroked her hand. “Nothing is going to happen to him, Cissy.”

“One of your colleagues,” she snorted, “I hope it won’t end up like the last time… But do you have something to tell me? My dearest?” She looked at him firecefully with tighten lips. He was surprised at first but then he realized.

“Cecilia, love, you know how my work is,” Hamish sighed as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I don’t always have an opportunity to call and speak with you even if I wanted to.” He paused and looked up at her, well aware by her expression that she wasn’t convinced. “I know you are mad at me.”

“Mad? Are you fucking kidding me? Hamish, for fuck’s sake I nearly died! Alex could have been harmed too and you think I’m just mad? God, I swear I want to beat living shit out of you for not being there when I needed you!” Cecilia snapped as she slipped her hand out of his. “You have a lot of nerve for suggesting that I’m just mad at you! It’s been nearly two weeks since I last heard from you! I didn’t know what to think when you never returned my calls. I even thought you were dead!”

He remained silent, listening to her berate him for the lack of communication, for not being there for her or Alex. He had no excuses for this one and he couldn’t tell her the truth for his silence because despite Cecilia being injured, she could have killed him. Plus it wouldn’t make any sense to her – even if he was allowed to tell her his real occupation, she would think he had gone completely mad and would have taken Alex away from him. He observed her carefully as she tried to hold back tears and her concerns about his lack of communication.

“Cecilia, I promise it won’t happen again. I swear it. You and Alexander are everything to me and I don’t know how could I survive if I had ever lost you. Look at me,” he said as he caught her chin. He gently tilted it so he was able to look into her teary eyes. “I’d die if I had lost you, my dearest.”

“You are an imbecile.”

His shoulders sagged at that comment. Judging from her tone, he assumed that she was now highly offended by his actions and not satisfied with the answers he gave her. He knew the best thing to do was just take it like a man and hope that once she got it out of her system, she might find something in her heart to forgive him for not being there.

“I know,” he said as he waited for the next one.

“You are the stupidest man on the planet that I have ever met!”

“That is true, darling.”

“You’re a bald little shit, Hamish and I swear, when I’m better, I’m going to kill you.”

“Anything you say, darling. Are you feeling better?” he asked.

Cecilia saw the little grin on his face and she couldn’t believe it. “You think this is funny?”

“No, my love,” he replied before he kissed her forehead. “I’m dead serious and if reviling will help you then do it because I deserve it.”

“Good, glad you can admit it. Now shut up and kiss me,” she ordered him.

“As my lady commands.”

This time she smiled until he kissed her gently at first, then he deepened the kiss. With her left hand, she grabbed his white shirt and pulled him closer.

“Don’t you ever do that again or I want a divorce,” she whispered between kisses.

“Understood,” he promised her as he ruffled her hair tenderly. He leaned in to plant another kiss on her lips.

“You are the most evil, perverse and wretched man I have ever met. I love you but still I want to kill you, so don’t act too confident around me,” Cecilia warned before she stole one more kiss. She looked past her husband and noticed a jacked draped over the chair near her. “What’s that?”

“What do you mean?” he asked surprised by this rapid change of topic.

“That nice jacket on the chair which looks like a very nice piece of a pilot’s uniform, my dear. Am I right?” she asked. Her voice was as sweet as her little smile, which he loved from the first time they met.

“Yes, indeed you’re right. What about it?”

“Hand on to it - it’ll be useful in the second part of your apology,” she replied. Her innocent smile had turned into a very devilish one and Hamish blinked.

“Who are you and what have you done to my wife?” he asked with wide eyes.

Cecilia laughed quietly, still upset with him. She had plans to keep him on his toes, which made her feel powerful as she watched him react. “By your actions, you’re turning me into a monster, sweetie. Now could you please fetch Lexie? I want to make sure he’s all right.”

Without a word he went into the hospital’s corridor and smiled as his colleague Percival walked over with Alexander in tow. The young boy let go of the agent’s hand as he ran towards his father.

“Mom wants to see you, son,” he said as he held the door open. He watched the boy run into the room happily reaching for her and yelling how happy he was to see her awake. Hamish turned his attention to his colleague and nodded.

“Thank you for coming here so quickly and taking care of him. I’m afraid the shortest time I could make it from Valentine’s bunker to London was three hours,” he sighed. “I would have liked it to have been sooner but… well, I don’t need to get into messy details.”

“Merlin I know you would have done the same for me. It’s never a problem. Anyway…” Percival paused as two nurses passed by them. He smiled at them with a polite greeting before waiting until they were out of earshot. “I’m afraid we lost another one during this incident.”

Merlin sighed as he hung his head. The organization was going to be a mess by the time he got back to sort things out. Arthur betrayed them and paid dearly for his arrogance. Now’s not the best time to talk or do anything. For now, I have enough problems with my wife…”

“About that, I believe that her brother is coming towards us and he doesn’t look happy,” Percival murmured with a slight move of his head. Merlin turned just in time to avoid the fist of his brother-in-law punching past him, missing his face.

“Matthew, it’s always nice to see you,” he said in a calm voice. “ I do believe it’s not the best place to start a fight, especially when Cecilia can see everything through the door.”

“This time you’re lucky she’s here but next time – “

“Next time I’ll tell her about your dirty secrets, which I’m really curious how she will react,” Merlin replied as he pushed his glasses up.

He watched as Matthew closed his mouth, shocked.

“Oh yes, I know that and trust me I know much more about you and your friends. If I were you, I would go to your sister because, at the moment, she’s who we should be focused on,” Merlin added after a while of enjoying his victory over his uncouth brother-in-law. “Off you go.” He watched as Matthew gaped at him for a moment before yanking open the door to Cecilia's room and entering it without looking back.

“Is he always like that?” Percival asked when Matthew had left.

“Not really… it started a while ago. Well, from the beginning I had a feeling that her father wasn’t fond of me,” he sighed wearily. “It’s quite obvious that my father-in-law must have encouraged him to make up his current attitude towards me. Never mind that. Thank you again for watching over them and see you shortly at the shop.”

“The pleasure is all mine. Alexander is an adorable kid, Merlin. Quite a curious mind – wonder where he got that from,” he replied. He smiled at Merlin and shook hands with him before departing.

Merlin stood alone in the corridor, trying to pull his thoughts together and organize them in a logical manner. Until they selected a new person to take over as Arthur, he realized that he was the one who had to restore Kingsman to its former state. The thought of the long, hard months he had ahead of him, made him feel worn and old. He wasn’t a young man anymore, shooting targets and enjoying a drink or two with Harry when they were recently inducted into the organization. He sighed before pushing all thoughts of rebuilding and restructuring out of his mind, he entered the room with a small smile on his face.

Alex’s eyes were so heavy he felt as if he had suitcases underneath them rather than bags. His main patient of the day had been a four-year-old kid who had coded out of the blue on the table during a basic operation. They had tried for over an hour to bring her back but they had failed. Alex had had to leave the OR and tell a mother she was never going to hold her baby again. It had broken him. He had spent a lot of the evening in a supply closet trying to stem the tears that kept flowing for long enough so he could check up on his other patients. He had managed just barely before he grabbed his things from the locker room and then left for home without seeing anyone he knew.

When he got home Izzie and George were in the kitchen, chatting and giggling, which made Alex’s stomach turn. He could hear Meredith and Derek coming through into the living room so he darted upstairs determined not to see anyone. He went into the bathroom and stripped down to nothing and then climbed into the shower, hoping to wash the day away. He dumped his clothes in the laundry basket after he had done and made his way into his room. Y/N was there sleeping soundly, so much so there was drool on the pillow. He chuckled, it was a comforting sight after the day he had just left behind. He climbed in and sidled up next to Y/N who rolled over and allowed him to mould into them.

Alex inhaled. The smell of shampoo and strawberry shower gel filled his nose. It was heavenly. He didn’t think, he didn’t allow the day to take over him but instead focused on Y/N’s breathing. The exhaustion of the day pulled him under almost immediately.

He woke violently. He came to in a daze and for a moment he was unsure where he was but he could hear screaming. Loud screaming. There was a thud and he looked up to see Izzie standing at his door. As Meredith came up behind her looking concerned Alex turned to look at Y/N who was violently thrashing in the bed next to him with a scream that could pierce an eardrum.

Izzie and Meredith started rabbiting in his ear but Alex paid them no attention as he gently tried to shake Y/N awake.

‘Don’t wake-’ Meredith said

‘Of course, he should wake Y/N!’ Izzie scolded.

‘You should just make sure they’re safe. Like a seizure.’

‘Are you crazy?’ Izzie said.

‘No, Izzie’s right,’ Derek said appearing at the door. Alex ignored them all.

‘Y/N,’ he whispered, ‘wake up, it’s okay. I’m here.’

‘Shake harder Alex!’

‘Flash a light!’

‘Will you all get out!?’ Alex yelled, ‘I know what I’m doing okay?!’

‘Alex,’ Y/N mumbled. Bright eyes shone at him through the dark as Y/N came to. Alex could hear the troops retreating and mumbling to one another about Alex’s bad temper but he didn’t care.

‘What happened?!’ Y/N said sitting up confused.

‘You had a night terror,’ Alex said, ‘well I think.’

‘Did I?’ Y/N said. Their chest was heaving and there was fear written all over their face.

‘Yeah, you don’t remember?’

‘No…’

‘Well, that’s good right?’

‘I don’t know. I don’t think so. I don’t feel right. Something’s wrong.’

‘Like what?’

‘I don’t know. I just-’ Y/N started though their expression changed halfway through.

‘Are you okay?’ Alex asked. Without warning, Y/N burst into tears and couldn’t stop. Y/N’s body racked with sobs as Alex held them close to him whispering anything reassuring he could think of.

‘It’s okay,’ Alex said putting his arm around Y/N. Y/N nodded They sat there like that for a good twenty minutes before Y/N pulled back with a sniffle, ‘I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I don’t know why I am so upset. I don’t even remember what happened in my dream.’

‘Well it was a night terror they’re a bit more physical than a bad dream,’ Alex said, ‘my mom used to have them when I was little.’

‘Oh, Alex,’ Y/N said sadly, ‘I’m sorry. I had no idea.’

‘It’s not your fault,’ Alex said, ‘they’re not something that you can help.’

‘No, but sometimes you might like not having to look after everyone.’

‘It’s okay,’ he said with a smile pulling Y/N in for another hug.

When they stopped embracing Y/N looked up at Alex with a gasp.

‘Alex, you’re crying,’ Y/N said. Alex looked at Y/N before dabbing his eyes and seeing that he was in fact crying as well. He hadn’t realised and like Y/N he didn’t know why.

‘I am. I guess it’s been a long day,’ Alex said.

‘Yeah,’ Y/N said. They took a hand and wiped it gently along Alex’s cheek and then leant up and kissed him.

‘Well, at least I’m not the only one.’

‘Only one what?’ Y/N asked.

‘Who looks after people. We’ve got each other.’

‘Yeah… come on let’s get some sleep,’ Y/N said pulling back to lay down on the bed. Alex followed suit.

They were just about to settle down when the door swung open and George appeared.

‘What O’Malley?’ Alex said.

‘I heard screaming,’ George said with a yawn, ‘but I was in the bathroom.’

‘Go back to bed George,’ Y/N said with a smile, ‘Alex has taken care of everything.’
