I would like to see the Doctor Who characters put on Macbeth please

short answer: Storytime: Macbeth by @john-amend-all

long answer, some of which you (animate-mush) probably already know, but which will provide essential context without which most people seeing this will be completely lost:

This is going to involve a lot of me explaining memes from corners of fandom I was never in, that happened long before I was reading fic, much less active in fandom. But I have backread every archive I can find so hopefully I won't get anything glaringly wrong. If I do... well, I've tagged some people who were there!

As I understand it, back in the days of Usenet, when fic writers used to hang out on alt.drwho.creative, they, as fic writers do, liked to go meta. The particular means of going meta fashionable at the time was to have a shared 'outside-universe' setting where all the characters hang out when they're not 'on assignment' in a story. In the case of adwc this was a pub called This Time Round, which eventually sprouted a town (imaginatively called Nameless) and various associated institutions.

One of these was a daycare in which child versions of all the characters (which, since people write fic where everybody gets turned into babies, have to exist somewhere) were looked after by, for some reason, Izzy Sinclair from the comics; I don't know why Izzy, particularly, but there she was.

(Sidebar: my favorite part of the TTR stories is actually the school stories--there have to be high-school-aged versions of the characters, because people write high school AUs--which were invented by @heroofthreefaces, who will probably see this, hello!)

Then somebody (I see it was BK Willis, who I don't know if they're still active or not) came up with the idea of 'Storytime.' Various characters--often, though not always, the Master--make Izzy's life harder by reading the children exciting tales. Unfortunately the creche is equipped with a magic Storybook that forces various Doctor Who characters (sometimes random, sometimes quite pointed selections) to act out the events of the story--while retaining full meta awareness and the ability to make snarky commentary. (I particularly recommend the Sherlock Holmes stories to get an idea of how Storytime works, and Gereint and Enid because it's adorable and hilarious.)

Murder at Mill Cottage by @thisbluespirit isn't Storytime but it's also a good 'in' to the TTR world, I think, but you can also read it as just a regular AU, and it's very fun (and cute Sarah/Harry shipping as well), although sort of more upsetting if you read it as just a regular AU, because people get murdered.

I have added all of this context because I tried to make @januarydivide read Storytime: Macbeth without it and she was just like, what is happening here, do the characters know what they're doing or not, if they can make snarky remarks how come they have to play along, I am so confused. (The best I can explain is that, for the characters acting out the story, it's like one of those dreams where you're in a play you've never rehearsed but somehow you keep going anyways. Jan does that help?)

Oh, I forgot to mention that one of the running jokes of TTR is that Nyssa has snapped (from the trauma, presumably) and now spends all her time trying to kill Adric. It's less funny when you just say it like that, I think. Anyway that comes up several times in Macbeth so you should know.

Anyway. So. Why should you care? In Storytime: Macbeth, everyone's favorite time-traveling Scot, Jamie MacCrimmon, and the girls of the Second Doctor era team up to read Shakespeare to the children, and the Storybook does its fell work. Turlough is a reluctant Macbeth, the murderous pawn of supernatural forces--again. Tegan is his Lady Macbeth, grimly determined to chivvy him through the story as fast as possible and get it all over with. The narrator has to fight the witches (as well as toddler!Zoe) for control of the story. It's wonderfully meta, and in the end I think it's a comic meditation on the nature of tragedy. Macbeth is a pawn of supernatural forces; Lady M does see it all coming (Tegan knows the play), and there really is no other way out for them but mouthing the words Shakespeare wrote for them. It's like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, but with Turlough in it. Oh, and King Yrcanos, did I mention Duncan is King Yrcanos? He doesn't take kindly to being murdered by a red-headed whippersnapper. He takes some killing....

Somehow none of the horror of the story goes away even in what is essentially a story about a horrifically ill-judged production of the Scottish Play. But it is, essentially and mainly, hilarious--I feel I need to emphasize that, because I'm being serious about it--it's a comedy piece and it is side-splittingly funny; but that's harder to explain in a post.

Also Macbeth is funny.

Anyway you should all read this, and I promise it doesn't really need all that orientation if you're willing to accept some random weirdness and kind of skim the 'Interludes' that don't have any Macbeth in them.

I said in the comment I left when I read it, and I stand by it: "Completely seriously, Turlough is my favorite Macbeth. And I own the Ian McKellen one on DVD."

Fic Writer Tag Game

I was tagged to do this by @allegoriesinmediasres but it had already gone round Dreamwidth this last week, so I did it there. I’ll try and c+p it over here, too!

1) How many works do you have on AO3? 620 (but I've been writing a lot of short things since around 2006-7, and there might even still be a couple of the 1994-98 fic from the newsgroups up). 2) What’s your total AO3 word count? 1,476,147 (but this does include about 300,000 words of origfic for RaTs and rainbowfic that are collected into three works, so it doesn't affect the works no too much, but it does affect the wordcount.) 3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? Too many to list here! A lot. *nods* 4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos? People, it's still Miss Marple. Maybe one day it won't be Miss Marple, but today is not that day. (ETA: whenever i do my top AO3 fic on these memes, it’s disproportionately Miss Marple. I am bemused.) Miss Marple: The Spirit of St Mary Mead So We Meet at Last Not Miss Marple: it's the rain that will strengthen your soul (SW Prequels) Five Times the Doctor Got in the Way of Captain Janeway (and One Time They Got Along Just Fine) (DW/ST) By the Book (Origfic) (Oh, wow, By the Book keeps moving up. It must get recced sometimes, somewhere, mustn't it? 0_o ♥) 5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not? Yes. Fanfic is a lot my way of being social, which is why I don't get along with the new push-button web much. Like, kudos is fine, ok, but I just wanted to talk to people, and via fic always seems to be one of the nicest ways to do it. 6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? Oh, I don't know. I like being bleak sometimes when I feel like it. It might be the EatD one with the two Generals, but honestly there were a few in my mid-illness old bleak telly watching years, and the Level 7 one or the one from Children of the Damned might be even more so? Or some S&S stuff, too? I mean, I wrote S&S plane crash fic and weird drabbles. (I blame my fandoms! It's not my fault! *innocent*) Also I keep doing Clara splinter fic, so I keep killing Clara and it's always sadder than I expect when I get there. You'd think I'd learn by now, or just not kill this splinter, but, nooo, hey, how about MORE Clara splinter death, self? /o\ Oh, no, wait: it's probably Spooks! Spooks is also bleak and how about my tiny ficlet of death, Litany of the Fallen? Oh, actually, if I listen to people who aren't me, it's that B7 Avon/Servalan one, which I was always a bit: BUT I WROTE ONE WHERE THEY WON about it and everyone else was all THIS IS THE WORST in the comments. Sorry? The Quality of Mercy (Is Most Definitely Strained) (I still think the ending of Compendium is more angsty! It has double death!) (Ok, it's me. I like being bleak and angsty when I'm doing it. I'm less sure when someone else is doing it at me, of course. ;-p) 7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? I honestly don't know. I'm usually kind of gen and happy and sometimes even humorous, and keep canon's tone, and DW is fairly light most of the time. I tried searching on Happy, but I have never tagged anything as happy. But probably it is an AAL! thing, because AAL! is happiness in b&w TV form basically. Maybe of Of Human Bondage (or Five Times Adam and His Friends Found Themselves All Tied Up)? But I like all the AAL! ones I wrote for Yuletide, because they were the ones where I tried to be closest to an episode, and that makes them the most fun to re-read. 8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? I have a crossover in my top 5, so yes. I'm a DW fan; crossovers are just far too obvious a temptation when you've got a TARDIS. What DW fic writer hasn't managed at least one once somewhere? And I might have, um, written a lot of them. (AO3 says 126). I did once, way back in newsnet times, when we were having a debate over what you could and couldn't cross DW over with (and I was on Team You Can Cross It With Anything You Cowards), write a DW/Rainbow drabble. But I don't think I put that on AO3. I think it might be on Teaspoon. In AO3 works, I think by far the silliest is the Baldrick/Steed one, which AstroGirl said I couldn't write. (It was an Unconventional Courtship summary, not that they randomly dared me to write Baldrick/Steed. I mean, some of my flist totally would have done if they'd thought of it, but not in this case.) 9) Have you ever received hate on a fic? Not really. I've had some weird comments, but the nearest I've come to hate was one of the comments that time I tried to write Swan Queen fic and it wasn't happy enough for people. (I wrote a happy one after, but the ifrst one was set quite early, Regina was still kind of evil!) 10) Do you write smut? If so what kind? Alas, no. Although, ish, if we count my experimental elemental shipping phase, which included The Cornfield (Silver/Steel/(Sapphire)), which is the only time anyone called any of my fic sexy. I would totally have that comment made into a medal or something. 11) Have you ever had a fic stolen? Other than the random scraping things that have gone round over the years, no. 12) Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! Several people have been kind enough to do this, usually into Russian, and usually (but not always!) Miss Marple. 13) Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, and no - in adwc days we all co-authored round robins, which were a blast and highly frustrating. I think it'd be fun, but barring the odd bit of drabble tennis with various flisters back in the day, it's not really something that's worked out. (I'm thinking, I could have all the ideas, they could do all the writing, I could criticise?? XD) 14) What’s your all time favorite ship? My Relationships count is very misleading here, because I think it actually is (including in terms of things written for it), Sapphire/Silver/Steel, but it's a weird thing, so sometimes I tag it platonically, and sometimes I don't necessarily tag it at all for that reason, and also I think it puts people off unnecessarily. (But it's a Lie when I don't tag it. All my Sapphire & Silver & Steel is inherently OT3 even if no one else can see it.) 15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? None. I have unposted WIPs, but I do hope to finish those, and the only posted WIP is a very old one only on Teaspoon that was begun before I was ill and I can't even really say at this point that I would want to finish it. 16) What are your writing strengths? Character/dialogue, I think? I am actually not that bad at plot, but currently I lack the stamina for long things. I like to think I can be quite funny when I'm in the mood. 17) What are your writing weaknesses? Description, action. Argh. Yes, let's just talk some more, okay? 18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I was going to say I would never, but actually I did! I wrote Y Gwyll | Hinterland fic, and it wouldn't be right not to have some Welsh in that. However, while I may be a 1/4 Welsh and know some Welsh words, I don't actually speak it, so I had to turn to Llywela who was very kind and translated the sentences I needed. (I added the English translation in the footnote.) This was the fic, but basically language is important in canon (ironically maybe even more so in the Eng-lang version I watched than the original Welsh), and so it was also important in the fic. So, probably if it was a canon where it was required, then I would do what I could to get help to get it right? The good thing about the internet is that you can usually find someone, although usefully for me, I already knew someone. 19) What was the first fandom you wrote for? Doctor Who! 20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? I'm going to wimp out on this along with everyone else. Although... if any of you have a fave fic of mine, that would be very cool to hear! (But I don't expect anyone to.) Sometimes I'm pleased enough with the latest to feel it's that, but that's not always the case, and it isn't currently. (No, offence, Latest Works! I like you, it just only happens once in a while, usually when I've managed something I've wanted to do for years.)

I won’t tag anyone, because I know lots of people also did this on Dreamwidth, but it’s always VERY cool to see people’s answers to these things and memes are for stealing.

“A Deal With Cupid”: James Fleamont Potter: PS Reader: Chapter 11

(A/N: Reader has a very cute/kawaii aesthetic to her and is all about the pampering. I was originally gonna make her an oc but I know a lot of you have been missing reader content so I figured this would be a good compromise. A reader insert with all that that entails but with a little bit of a theme, lol)

James was positively buzzing with excitement.

Y/N has finally overcome her sickness...and period...with the help of the four of them mother henning over her.

And, of course, with the help of Madame Pompfrey's potions.

And just some good old fashioned rest and relaxation.

James discovered something about himself during the whole process.

And that something was that when Y/N got sick... he turned into the biggest sap in the world.

He hated it that she was sick.

Absolutely hated it.

But also...he kind of loved how needy she was and how she wanted him to hold her constantly.

Which he was more than happy to do, honestly.

The only time it was particularly gut wrenching was when he had to leave for classes or quidditch.

And of course, the absolute misery that was when McGonagall came to investigate about the sick girl and found them curled up in his bed.

To say that James panicked would've been the understatement of the century.

But the professor simply gave him a stern look and reminded him of the rules that she was sure he'd no doubt break before telling him to inform her that she is to return to her dorm when she wakes up.

James had whined incessantly but relayed the information none the less.

He walked her as far as he could before she simply pecked his cheek and went to bed.

He didn't even see her for two days but it would seem that bit of of uninterrupted rest was exactly what she needed.

That morning, he was up with the first rays of sunshine and on the Quidditch pitch for practice.

They'd spent the early hours running drills and preparing to absolutely slaughter Ravenclaw next weekend.

So he fully intended on having a shower and collapsing in his bed for a quick nap before tracking down his girlfriend to check on her.

When low and behold, he opened his dorm room and the scent of orange and cream filled his senses.

Music was coming from the door to his lav and he could smell the familiar scent of that vanilla candle.

Y/N was here and taking her bubble bath it would seem.

"Love?" James called out to her gently, as not to startle her.

"In here, James!" she called back. "I'm in the tub!"

"Oh alright, love. I'll be out here when you get out!" he called back.

He was fighting with himself because he missed her and wanted to snatch her into his arms but he also wanted to give her her space and be respectful.

"Ok, but I mean, you can come in her, babe. It's fine. I'm covered by the bubbles anyway." she said and James went rigid.

"Bubbles pop, love." he chuckled nervously.

"Not these." she giggled. "They're my own invention. I'm a frickin genius."

"And so modest." he teased poking his head in the door to see her sitting there in a tub almost overflowing with bubbles.

She shrugged and grinned mischeviously, "Even if they do pop I think we're past that stage. You held my hair while I puked for the past week and literally cleaned snot out of my nose."

"Yeah, that was gross." he said finally stepping into the lav and taking a seat on the edge of the tub.

Her head was wrapped up in a pink scarf, protection her hair from getting wet and there was a purple face mask covering her skin.

James couldn't help it as a soft smile crawled onto his face.

"What?" she asked furrowing her brows at him, making the mask crack a bit in places.

"Nothing." he said with a chuckle.

She splashed some water at him, "Tell me."

"Nothing." he said reaching in and splashing him back. "It's just, I love how comfortable we are with each other. We haven't even had our first kiss yet and here we are. I'm covered in mud and I stink from Quidditch and you're literally sitting in a bubble bath. You don't seem concerned with that at all."

She shrugged, "It's cause I know you won't hurt me and I know I can be myself with you."

"Me too." he smiled. "Mud and all."

"Eh." she shrugged again and pointed at her face. "You have your mud and I have mine."

"I guess that's true." he said.

"Do you want to get in?" she asked and James nearly fell in the floor.

She giggled wildly, "I just meant because you need a bath, James. You've been to practice. It doesn't have to be weird if we don't make it weird. It's just a bath."

"Yeah, but we'll be.."

"Naked. Yes." she said. "But again, it's a bath. If you're not comfortable that's ok. It was just an offer anyway."

"No, no, I'm ok with that. I just don't wanna- what I mean is- I don't want to ever make you feel like- ugh, fuck- I can't - I just don't want to-" he stammered.

"James, I'm the one that brought it up." she said pointedly. "If I had a problem with it, then I wouldn't have said anything."

He nodded with a gulp.

"Er, uh, ok?" he said.

She tilted her head, "James, if you're not comfortable it's ok. There's not pressure. I'm cool either way."

"No, no." he said. "I'll have a bath with you. I just have to."

"Oh right." she said closing her eyes and creating a shield with her hands. "Ok, go ahead. I can't see anything."

James chuckled as he undressed, "I wasn't really worried about that but thanks for the thought."

"What do you take me for?" she teased. "Someone who would take advantage of you in your vulnerable state?"

"And what state is that?" he asked dipping into the hot water of the tub opposite of her.

"Exhausted from Quidditch, of course." she giggled.

James snorted as he moved some of the bubbles around to cover him.

"Alright, I'm covered." he said and she moved her hands to reveal her grin.

"Helloooo." she said impishly.

"Hello." he said.

"Want some face mask?" she asked holding out the purple tube to him.

"Maybe later." he said leaning his head back on the edge of the tub. "You know, I'd planned on a shower but I think this is much better."

"Well a soak is usually great for aching muscles. A massage is too. Come here and I'll rub your shoulders." she said.

James' eyes snapped open and he went rigid again.

"Uh, what?" he squeaked.

"Oh, James relax." she laughed. "I was just gonna rub your shoulders. I know you hold a lot of tension there."

"Are you sure?" he asked, searching her eyes for any speck of hesitation.

"I won't bite." she grinned. "Unless you ask me too that is."

James narrowed his eyes at her.

"Don't you start." he said before slowly making his way over to her.

He checked her face once more for any sign of discomfort but she only smiled at him.

He turned around and she slowly pulled him back into her.

He had to work to ignore the way his skin felt against hers.

"See there." she said, placing a kiss to his jawline. "And you were scared for nothing."

"I wasn't scared, love." he admitted, relaxing as he felt her fingers gently massage his shoulders. "I just don't want to ever do anything that hurts you or makes you uncomfortable. You mean way too much to me. I'd never do anything to-"

"I know, James." she said, kissing his cheek and running her fingers through his hair.

He sighed and continued to relax until he was leaning against her heavily.

She soaped up the wash rag and gently washed his chest, letting the bits of dirt slide down into the bubbles concealing them.

James continued to let her wash his hair and rub his shoulders for a bit before he leaned back to look at her.

"Thanks, babygirl." he said. "I didn't realize I needed that but I did."

"I got you." she said. "Just like you've always got me."

He nodded, "Couldn't get rid of me if you tried."

"A week ago I might not have believed you if you said that to me but you did put up with me while I was sick AND on my period. I'm a terror when I'm like that." she admitted, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and placing her cheek into his wet hair.

"You just felt bad, love." he said, kissing the back of her hand. "You couldn't help it."

"Still." she shrugged.

"You weren't that bad, honestly." he said. "You just wanted a lot of cuddles. But I'm always more than happy to provide that service."

She giggled behind him and he couldn't help but grin softly.

"Hey James?" she said and he leaned his head back to look at her again.

She was looking at him differently and he was mesmerized by the twinkle in her eyes.

"Yeah, love?" he asked.

She didn't say anything as she leaned in to connect their lips.

James' stomach turned and flipped as they melded together.

He never would've imagined it to happen this way but it couldn't have been more perfect.

They finally seperated and James opened his eyes to see her looking at him oddly.

It was only when she started giggling when he noticed the mask on her face was smeared everywhere.

"There's purple all over my mouth isn't there?" he asked but her giggle told him everything he needed to know.

He splashed his own face with water to wash it off before a mischevious glint took over his features.

"James Fleamont Potter, don't you dare!"

"Too late." he said and send a tidal wave of water crashing into her.

The purple mask leaked off her face and her hair wrap was soaked to her head ... but she was smiling.

She pounced on him, trying to drown him in the bath water.

It was in that moment, when she was laughing wildly and simulataneously trying to murder him that James wondered how he'd ever gotten by so long without her.

She was the love of his life and he never wanted to spend another moment without her.
