books I’ve read in 2023 📖 no. 010
The Good Lie by A.R. Torre
“We were a wrecked car, barreling down the highway without lights, our steering locked into place. I could put a seat belt on. I could reach out and jab the hazard lights on. But I couldn’t turn off the car, and I couldn’t seem to open the door and fling myself out.”

Recent books that I’ve read and would recommend🖤
Under The Blade by Matt Serafini. A really interesting twist on the slasher genre. Starts as a classic 90s slasher film, but has a fresh storyline and tons of twists.
Seed by Ania Ahlborn. An interesting take on demonic possession with a gut punching ending. Very creepy and bleak.
The Cotton Candy Massacre by Christopher Robertson. This book was SO much fun to read, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves horror and 80s slasher films. Gory, brutal, and a little bit cheesy in the best way.
House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland. A bizarre and creepy little book that reads like a dark fairy tale. Great ending.
What Lies Between Us by John Marrs. Unhinged and twisted, but a page turner. Takes toxic, dysfunctional mother-daughter relationships to another level.
The Vessel by Adam Nevill. A creepy, slow-burn folk horror with a great ending. This was a quick read and I finished it in one sitting.
The Good Lie by A.R. Torre. I finished this in one day. A great mystery/crime thriller, and I enjoyed the main characters.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes & Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty. An interesting read and gives a different perspective on death.

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant: In this suspense novel, Cooper and his young daughter Finch have been living an isolated life in the Appalachians for eight years, haunted by the ghosts of their past.
Dead Silence by S.A. Barne: In this novel, a spaceship crew boards a luxury spaceship that was reported lost 20 years ago, only to find the nightmare hasn’t ended. Goodreads describes this book as “Titanic meets The Shining,” and I feel like that’s enough to convince anyone to read this.
Adams 101 series: Adams 101 is a collection of 42 books that are a beginner’s guide to a variety of topics such as psychology, genetics, history, philosophy, etc.
1984 by George Orwell: A classic dystopian novel that follows Winston Smith, who works for the Ministry of Truth and is starting to question the system he works for.
The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson: Ted Severson meets Lily Kintner on a long flight to Boston and has an instant connection. While drinking, Ted confesses his marriage is failing and his wife is cheating. Ted jokes about killing his wife for what she’s done, and Lily makes an offer to help. Back in Boston, their twisted bond intensifies as they plot the death of his wife, but Lily is keeping some secrets.
Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau: A coming-of-age novel in 1970’s Baltimore that follows 14-year-old Mary Jane. She comes from a strict household where she cooks, cleans, goes to church, reads, and listens to Broadway show tunes with her family. During the summer, she takes a job as a nanny for a psychiatrist who is helping a rock star get clean. While working for the family, Mary Jane’s horizons are broadened and is thrown into a world of sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll.
The Selection by Kiera Cass: In this novel, 35 girls are given the chance to leave their hardships behind and compete to become the wife of Prince Maxon. America Singer is chosen, but she is reluctant to go because she just wants to be with her secret love, Aspen. Everything changes when she meets Prince Maxon. This is a series, and all the books are on Kindle Unlimited.
My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell: As allegations are made against the teacher Vanessa was involved with when she was 15, she is struggling to accept that she was sexually abused. Check trigger warnings before reading.
The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty: My absolute favorite series. Nahri is a con woman in 18th-century Egypt who doesn’t believe in magic. When she accidentally summons a djinn during a fake ceremony, she is swept away into a magical world where she is forced to face the reality that magic is real.
The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali: The night before Roya and Bahman’s marriage, chaos ensues as a coup d’etat takes place. Roya searches everywhere for Bahman but didn’t find him. 60 years have passed and Roya has finally found Bahman and can ask the questions that have weighed heavy on her heart.
Every Last Secret A.R. Torre: I love a good domestic thriller. Cat Winthorpe has it all. The perfect husband, a big home, and popularity. Everything was going as planned until a new couple moves next door and shakes things up. Neena Ryder isn’t like Cat. She’s rough around the edges, her husband could use work, and she itching to move up the ladder. As Cat and Neena become friends, Neena’s jealousy grows and she becomes fixated on Cat’s husband, William. She sees William as a way to get the life she wants and soon becomes obsessed.
Everything I know About Love by Dolly Alderton: A memoir about everything that encompasses growing up and navigating your 20s
Winter World by A.G. Riddle: The world is experiencing an Ice Age and humanity is facing extinction. Scientists, scrambling to find answers, discover an object near the Sun. NASA sends scientists to make contact with it. What is it? Is it causing the ice age? This whole series is on Kindle Unlimited.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Lewis Stevenson: This gothic novella takes place in London and follows the main protagonist named Gabriel John Utterson who is trying to figure out the strange relationship between his friend Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde.
Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney: Married couple Amelia and Adam win a weekend trip to Scotland and decide to go as a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. They didn’t win this trip though, it was planned. Someone is lying.

The Good Lie | A.R. Torre | Published 2021 | *SPOILERS*
Tumblr media
Six teenagers dead. Finally, the killer behind bars. But are the games just beginning?
Psychiatrist Dr. Gwen Moore is an expert on killers. She's spent a decade treating California's most depraved predators and unlocking thier motives - predators much like the notorious Bloody Heart serial killer, whose latest teenage victim escaped and then identified local high school teacher Randall Thompson as his captor. The case against Thompson as the BH Killer is damning - and closed, as far as Gwen and the media are concerned. If not for one new development...
Defense attorney Robert Kavin is a still-traumatized father whose own son fell prey to the BH Killer. Convinced of Thompson's innocence, he steps in to represent him. Now Robert wants Gwen to interview the accused, create a psych profile of the killer and his victims, and help clear his client's name.
As Gwen and Robert grow closer and she dives deeper into the investigation, grave questions arise. So does Gwen's suspicions that Robert is hiding something - and that he might not be the only one with a secret.
Gwen is a psychiatrist who specializes in the especially depraved clients. Dealing mostly with individuals with violent tendencies, she sees a variety of clients ranging from a pharmacist who has violent tendencies toward his wife, whom he suspects of cheating, to a housewife who is hellbent on violence toward her sister-in-law for reasons unknown.
When John, the pharmarcist and his wife, Brooke, are found dead in an apparent heart attack (Brooke) and suicide (John), Gwen believes it is only a matter of time before the police are knocking on her door, wanting to subponea her records detailing her sessions with John that occurred over the last year. Simultaneously, a young boy named Scott has escaped from LA's most notorious serial killer in a decade, known as the Bloody Heart Killer.
The BH Killer has already claimed six victims, all kidnapped from public places, held for 6-8 weeks at a time, before they are murdered, their genitals cut off and a heart carved into their chests, all several digits including the pinky fingers always missing. These victims are all good-looking, rich, 17-year-old males with their lives fully ahead of them.
Scott positively identifies a teacher at his school, Beverly High, as the BH Killer: Randall Thompson. Thompson is arrested immediately and Scott goes into full celebrity status, claiming that he was able to escape by keeping a fork given to him with dinner, and using it to remove the handcuffs that kept him bound, allowing him to leave his captive home and return to his home.
Scott's mother knows that something is off and that her son is lying, though she can't figure out why. She watches his every move, and eventually, Scott comes out and tells the police that he was lying, that he didn't escape but was actually let go, though his mother knows that this was also a lie, and can't figure out what Scott is hiding.
Gwen begins working with a defense attorney named Robert Kavin. Robert has opted to represent Randall Thompson in hopes of proving his innocence, stating that he knows that Mr. Thompson is innocent and just needs to prove it, doing so pro bono through his law firm. Gwen and Robert shared one passionate night together, and when Robert was caught snooping inside her home office, where the file she had on John was left open, she thinks that any sort of relationship with him is over.
But instead, he hires her to a psychological profile on the BH Killer in hopes of either proving that Randall Thompson IS or ISN'T the killer in question. Gwen begins working fervently on her profile, and in the end, determines that Mr. Thompson does not fit the profile that she has put together. While yes, Mr. Thompson is a sexual predator, it isn't toward males as he despies any sort of homosexuality. Instead, his focus is on young teenage girls, having been accused of sexual misconduct with several of his students, though according to records, those findings were not founded.
While giving a house tour for John and Brooke Abbott's home, the potential sellers find quite the find in the attic of the home, a particular thing that the buyer was interested in seeing as a home inspector. Inside, they find the mattress, covered in blood, along with the pinky fingers of the six victims.
The news is released to the public, and Gwen is shocked. She cannot believe that John and Brooke were the BH Killers. She returns home quickly, opening up her files on John and the profile she created and realizes that they fit perfectly, although John never showed any of these tendencies while in the office with her. His only concern was that Brooke was potentially cheating on him, and that he thought he would be violent toward her.
While putting together a timeline, she understands now that the men he was fearful were sleeping with his wife were actually the victims, more notably, that of Gabe Kavin, Robert Kavin's 17-year-old son. During this revelation, Robert enters her home office and begins threatening Gwen, believing that she knew of John's involvement as the BH Killer the entirety of their relationship.
Gwen reassures him that she never got the vibes from John, and that she truly believed that everything he discussed during their sessions was because of Brooke. Robert believes her, and after a discussion with the detective on the case of John and Brooke's suspicious deaths, leaves and disappears.
A month goes by, and Randall Thompson is let out of jail, though Scott Harden wants to end his life. He was devastated to learn that Brooke was dead at the hands of her husband after planning to meet with him a few months after his release, of which she was responsible for. The two of them had fallen in love, though this was the case with the other male victims, but she really fell for Scott during his time in captivity, even caring for the wounds that John would give him.
But, despite his violent tendencies toward the wronged individual, his mother, along with the other mothers of the victims of the BH Killer put together a foundation in order to help the true victims of Randall Thompson.
Gwen continues her practice, having become more popular after it got out that she had been one of the BH Killer's psychiatrists, and in the end, Robert reaches out to her and the two of them begin a sort of relationship with each other despite his initial misgivings to her, even going so far as to apologize to her for misunderstanding her role in John's life.

2023 - Week 20 - A book with a cover or title that includes a route of travel
My Pick: A Fatal Affair - A.R. Torre
My only complaint about this book is it took so long to get into. Usually with Torre’s books I’m invested in the first chapter. I actually thought about adding this to my DNF list. However, several chapters in she finally got me and I was hooked on the story. You learn to love/hate/sympathize with the characters through the book.
My Rating: 4 out of 5

MERCADERES, UN CUENTO PARA MI VIEJO.
Tumblr media

Hybrid Douglas-Fir Trees Hold the Key to Climate Change Adaptation
Hybrid Douglas-Fir Trees Hold the Key to Climate Change Adaptation https://ift.tt/3sOnB5Q As the world faces the unprecedented challenges of climate change, scientists are searching for ways to help forests adapt to the new normal. A recent study by Compton and colleagues, published in AoB PLANTS, sheds light on how hybrid Douglas-fir trees could be more resilient to climate change and better suited for reforestation efforts. Douglas-fir trees are a crucial species for timber production and ecosystem services in North America. They provide habitat for wildlife, stabilize soil, and sequester carbon. However, as the climate warms, these trees are threatened by increasing drought and heat stress. In response, researchers have been exploring the genetic variation within the species to identify the best trees for planting in the face of an increasingly challenging environment. Image: Canva The study’s authors focused on the relationship between growth, water use efficiency, and heat tolerance in different varieties of Douglas-fir trees. Their results revealed a trade-off between growth and heat tolerance. In other words, faster-growing trees from warmer climates are less able to withstand heat stress than their slower-growing counterparts from colder climates. The researchers also discovered that intervarietal hybrid families, with mixed ancestry from coastal and interior varieties, had higher water use efficiency and greater heat tolerance than pure coastal families. This suggests hybridization might be a source of pre-adapted alleles to extreme heat events and drought in an increasingly warming climate. The study further revealed significant genetic variation in water use efficiency, photosynthetic capacity, growth, and tolerance of leaves to heat stress among Douglas-fir families and varieties. In their article, Compton and colleagues write: Warmer climates bring significant challenges to the survival of Douglas fir populations. While coastal varieties are widely planted due to their fast growth, their low water use efficiency (a trait of mesic-adapted plants) and low tolerance to heat might predispose them to maladaptation to future climate conditions, as suggested by trade-offs between growth, water use efficiency and heat tolerance found in this study. Our study indicates significant genetic variation in water use efficiency (inferred from carbon isotope discrimination), photosynthetic capacity (inferred from %N), growth and tolerance of leaves to heat stress among Douglas-fir families and varieties. High elevation families had higher water-use efficiency and photosynthetic capacity than low elevation families. In addition, families with greater heat tolerance had slower growth and higher water-use efficiency. Intervarietal hybrids, with mixed ancestry from coastal and interior varieties, had higher water use efficiency and higher heat tolerance than coastal families, suggesting hybridization might be a source of pre-adapted alleles to extreme heat events and drought in increasingly warming climate conditions. Book Review: The Good Lie by A.R. Torre
Book Length: 255 pages
My Review: This is my first time reading a book by this author and I was very impressed by her writing. It was a very twisty, engaging, and cohesive storyline. While the subject matter was very emotionally heavy, I think that for a crime drama such as this, she hit the mark.
⚠️ Trigger Warning: Talk of a rape; murder/suicide; mutilation⚠️
