How long has he been undercover? How long since they spoke???#(thinks about people whose loved ones died in episode one...thinks about them hearing that Voyager and some of its crew DID survive but#the person they loved did not - that there was never any chance of them returning)#Janeway's hair is so BRIGHT in this episode#'Harry - wait for me!' <- Tom in one line#I also love the creepy barn party 'don't look in there~! don't look in there~!' Voyager should have leaned way more into horror for REAL#Janeway's eyes widening when she sees Tuvok ~!! <3 she thought he could be dead!!! Bulgarian Music in Studio Ghibli films
”Myth has it that Orpheus was born in what is now Bulgaria. It seemed to be fact, not myth, that his daughters are still singing there”
These words were written by the New York Times in the remote 1963 — the year in which the largest Bulgarian folk ensemble crossed the Iron Curtain to conquer an entire continent with its cosmic art.
The 1975 release of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, a compilation album of modern arrangements of Bulgarian folk songs, further popularized Bulgarian music, and in 1977, a vinyl record featuring the folk song “Izlel ye Delyo Haydutin” (Eng: Come out rebel Delyo) began its journey aboard the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecrafts.
From this point on popularity from the West spread to the East, and Bulgarian folk music made it to the entertainment industry, including legendary Japanese anime films, like the cult cyberpunk “Ghost in the Shell” or the heartwarming Studio Ghibli features.
In this short article I write about two occasions of Bulgarian music playing in Studio Ghibli’s films.
The record that inspired the creation of “Only Yesterday”
“Only Yesterday” is a 1991 Japanese animated drama film written and directed by Isao Takahata, based on the 1982 manga of the same title by Hotaru Okamoto and Yuko Tone. Set in rural Japan, the film draws parallels with the peasant lifestyle present in Eastern Europe.
The original work is a compilation of short stories about 11-year-old Taeko’s daily life in 1966. Director Takahata had a hard time making it into a movie since the manga, told in the form of a memoir, has no plot to hold a feature. Together with producer Toshio Suzuki, they came up with the solution of bringing the narrator of the story, adult Taeko, into the movie. But there is a curious anecdote about how this idea came to mind.
Tumblr media

In a 2021 interview with students from Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, producer Suzuki recounts how a record of Bulgarian songs performed by the children choir “Bodra Smyana”, introduced to him by director Takahata, inspired the creation of the movie. Moved by the cosmic voices of the children, they decided to make “Only Yesterday” a musical. He also recalls what a tiring process it was to acquire the rights to the music, but if you’ve seen the movie, I am sure you will agree that it was worth it; the haunting, beautiful songs with the pastoral images of farmers picking flowers contribute to one of the greatest scenes created in cinema.

In “Only Yesterday”, we can hear two songs from the album Bulgarian Polyphony I by Philip Koutev Ensemble. The upbeat “Dilmano Dilbero” [Eng. beautiful Dilmana] sets a happy mood as the protagonist gets changed and ready to go on the field. As the scene shifts and Taeko starts narrating a sad story about the girls in the past picking safflower with their bare hands, the song and mood shift as well.
While the first song has a fast rhythm, with lyrics about pepper planting that can also be interpreted figuratively, the second one, “Malka Moma Dvori Mete” [Eng., a little girl sweeps the yard], is a ballad about a young girl who is forced into marriage but has never known true love.
Both compositions sing about life-cycle events like marriage and the regular coming of the harvests, with lyrics perfectly fitting the setting and plot of the movie, which makes me wonder if the filmmakers chose them by chance or if they had someone translate the words.
Bulgarian Cosmic Voices Enchanting Howl
“Howl’s Moving Castle” is a 2004 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, loosely based on the 1986 novel of the same name by British author Diana Wynne Jones. Set in a fictional kingdom the movie draws inspiration from various places in Europe. One of them being Bulgaria.
The story focuses on a young girl, named Sophie, magically transformed into an old woman, and a self-confident but emotionally unstable young wizard, Howl, living in a magical moving castle.

If you’ve seen the movie, you surely remember the scene when Madame Suliman ambushes Howl and tries to strip him of his magic powers. Star Children encircle him and his companions; their shadows grow big, dark and intimidating. They start dancing and chanting unintelligible magic words and are almost successful in their devilish act.
This scene, together with the music played in the background, have been a favourite of many fans of the film. Some even recount it giving them nightmares when they were children.

It turns out, however, that these aren’t any incantations, but the lyrics of a folk song. In Bulgarian. And a love song! Contrary to popular belief, the lyrics have nothing to do with magic and are actually about a boy taking his sweetheart, Dona, to the market to buy her new clothes. The excerpt used in the movie is very short and a bit altered from the original, but the words used go like this: Trendafilcheto, kalafercheto, Done mamino, translated as “the rose, the costmary, my darling Dona”.
I am planing a follow up article where I will post the translated lyrics together with a brief explanation on how they are related to the movies.
If you want to comment on or add something, I would love to hear!

This has been buggibg me for a while. What is the reason why Rachel dehumanizing nymphs?
Cause from what I'm seeing the nymphs getting the most screen time is Daphne, Minthe, Thetis, Psyche and a little bit of Leuce and Echo.
4 out of the 6 nymphs we see are very open in their sex appeal and flirty. Yet for some reason they get discriminated when Hera, Persophone, and Aphrodite do the same thing but get a pass because the are white coded rich people.
For my knowledge (but I could be wrong if so please correct me) nymphs are known to be seductive and sexy but they were well respected just like any other God. They were given given sacrifices to please them.
Is this just another case of Rachel being the so-called "folkorists" who has done the first Google link she see or could there just be how she interprets then but like the rest of her story misses the mark?
So there are a couple different and equally interesting theories on this.
Rachel has established it as canon that the nymphs are lower class. And there are a lot of stereotypes and prejudices against lower class women going into sex work, which we see in LO through characters like Minthe who work as car girls (notice how in the present story Thetis and Minthe are both personal assistants which is also a role that's commonly stereotyped as "the boss' sidepiece" as it's a role often occupied by women in service to men). Even Leuce isn't safe from this:
Tumblr media
Normally I'd just say "good for her" but it's clear with how much Leuce has been turned into the delusional girl who "manifests" her fantasies that Rachel is once again conflating sexuality with more negatively-associated character traits for any woman who isn't Persephone (because when it's Persephone it's sexual liberation always, she's not a "sugar baby", she's a "workaholic" who "earned her position and wealth", but when it's Leuce or Minthe or Thetis they're "homewreckers") And yeah, this is a common disconnect that happens between lower class and upper class people, where lower class people (especially women) are often judged and outcast for doing certain things or behaving a certain way which rich upper class people take and adopt and turn into something "trendy" and "empowering".
But there's... another theory that may explain why so many nymphs in the story are being pigeonholed into the "homewrecking sugar babies" stereotype. And you're gonna hate me for this, because I'm sure the gut reaction to reading this from many is gonna be "goddamit not Lolita again!" buuuttt yeah we're gonna talk about Lolita again.
CONTENT WARNING: We're talking about Lolita again, which means discussion surrounding the sexualization of minors is ahead.
There's a certain term the main character of the book Humbert Humbert uses to describe girls who are specifically, and I quote:
"Between the age limits of nine and fourteen there occur maidens who, to certain bewitched travellers, twice or many times older than they, reveal their true nature which is not human, but nymphic (that is, demoniac); and these chosen creatures I propose to designate as 'nymphets'." - Lolita, Chapter 5, Page 18, paragraph 5
It's also very clear from the way Nabokov specifies the definition of nymphet from Humbert Humbert's perspective that the use of the word 'nymphet' is intentionally referencing the root word of Greek origin:
"...I would have the reader see 'nine' and 'fourteen' as the boundaries - the mirrory beaches and rosy rocks - of an enchanted island haunted by those nymphets of mine and surrounded by a vast, misty sea. Between those age limits, are all girl-children nymphets? Of course not. Otherwise we who are in the know, we lone voyagers, we nympholepts, would have long gone insane."
Though Humbert Humbert is obviously not being literal here, the visual metaphor is strongly relying on the etymology of the word 'nymph', but twisting the depiction of nymphs in such a way to support his own fantasies.
And while I'm definitely not trying to accuse Rachel of having the same mindset of Humbert Humbert (seriously, I want to make it clear that I don't think Rachel is a pedophile, just horribly misled at best), it's interesting to me how this specific definition of a nymphet matches with that of Rachel's old descriptions of her own art:
Tumblr media
"You have to be an artist and a madman, a creature of infinite melancholy, with a bubble of hot poison in your loins and a super-voluptuous flame permanently aglow in your subtle spine (oh, how you have to cringe and hide!), in order to discern at once, by ineffable signs - the slightly feline outline of a cheekbone, the slenderness of a downy limb, and other indices which despair and shame and tears of tenderness forbid me to tabulate - the little deadly demon among the wholesome children; she stands unrecognized by them and unconscious herself of her fantastic power."
What's interesting is that I did dig up an old profile of Rachel's that actually acknowledged that what she's doing with her art shouldn't be conflated with, well... child porn.
Tumblr media
"It's not THAT kind of lolita" and yet the writing feels like it's been smeared all over the wall with shit. There are so many scenes and artistic choices throughout LO that scream "it is that kind of lolita".
Though it is still a theory, and I don't resort to using Rachel's old art of "proof" of LO's shortcomings, I don't think it should necessarily be ignored that the nymphs in LO seem to be characterized very similarly to Humbert Humbert's description of 'nymphets' - devious and promiscuous, and thus easier to blame when predatory men pursue them, rather than holding those predatory men accountable. And we see this in Persephone too, but unlike the nymphs, Persephone is rich, upper class, and of a "superior pedigree". So she becomes the desirable form of a 'nymphet' that's praised and celebrated by the narrative and characters like Hades, rather than the literal nymphs who are shamed and outcast for simply having sexual independence.
Whatever theory you roll with is on you, you can dismiss all this as just overthinking nonsense, but I do think it makes for interesting food for thought because at this point, LO is undeniably - intentionally or subconsciously - influenced by Rachel's relationship with Lolita, and whether or not that influence is aware at all of Lolita being originally written to be a precautionary tale, that remains to be seen.

Part One
You are to be wed to Niklaus of the Mikaelson clan, but when tragedy strikes and blood is shed in the snowy night, the true strength of family bonds and the power of love are put to the ultimate test.
♡♡ I'm back with another series, one I've wanted to write for a long time. This series explores the lives of the Mikaelsons as ordinary individuals in the Viking era, told from the reader's perspective but also Niklaus's. ♡♡
6k words - Warnings: Viking AU where the Mikaelsons are completely human (no magic, werewolves, vampires... etc) lots of death and violence, sprinkle of norse mythology... no smut in this part, {Spoiler: it will be eventually reader x Elijah}

"Gerda! Come help me with these flowers," you yelled from the back garden. You were gathering the best wildflowers you could find to make a wreath to wear for the feast that evening. It was still winter, but it had been mild for almost a whole moon, bringing the wildflowers early.
"Coming systir!" she replied. Gerda came out into the garden a few moments later, carrying a basket full of wildflowers and a smile on her face. "These will look so lovely in your hair tonight," she said holding up a bunch of lavender. "I'm sure Niklaus will be so happy to see you."
You blushed slightly at her words. Niklaus.
Your mother had told you that the feast tonight was to announce your marriage to the young Mikaelson. Your family was thrilled, having you marry one of the sons of the Karl increased your family's standing among the clan. However, you were still nervous. You had grown up with Niklaus, he was kind and had a sweet smile, but he was also quite wild and battle hungry. He had just returned from his first raiding voyage to the coast of the English lands, and the stories of his bravery were spreading.
“I'm sure he will, but he is not my betrothed yet," you said as you put some more flowers in your basket.
"That does not mean that he will not be soon, and you will have to kiss him eventually," Gerda replied.
"Gerda!" You threw a bunch of flowers at her. "Do not be so improper."
"Sorry systir," Gerda said laughing. "It's just exciting, you are getting married to a Mikaelson!"
"Let us hope that the gods smile on our union," you said, picking up your basket of flowers.
Gerda had only seen eleven summers yet she was eager to grow up, while you were less than eager. Your betrothal had been a long time coming and it was a good match for your family, but you didn't have the same excitement as your sister. You felt unprepared to be a wife.
You saw Niklaus coming over with his little brother Henrik and a small smile crossed your face.
You looked up at Niklaus. "Hello, Niklaus."
"My dear," Niklaus greeted, bowing his head. "You look beautiful as ever."
"Thank you," you replied.
Henrik stood beside his brother. "Nik, you promised we could spar today!"
"Henrik, patience," Niklaus said, placing a hand on his younger brother's shoulder. "How about you go with Gerda, she can watch while you practice."
"Come on Gerda, let's go," Henrik said excitedly, taking her hand and pulling her over to the field.
"Your brother seems enthusiastic," you remarked.
"It's what he was born to do," Niklaus said, watching his brother and your sister run off.
"They would make a good match, your Gerda and my Henrik," he suggested.
"Oh yes, Gerda is very fond of Henrik," you agreed. "But they are both so young, it's a bit too early to make a decision such as that."
"Of course, I would not wish to rush them," Niklaus said. "Besides, you are the one I'm here for today."
You looked away, a slight blush appearing on your cheeks. He was a true charmer and had seen many battles even at his young age, the ladies in the village loved him and were always fighting over his attention. But the truth was you didn't feel anything when you looked at him. There was no spark or tingle of love the way it was described in the fables, just a friendship that you wished would turn into something more.
But it was an honor for your family, to be marrying into such a noble household. And it wasn't like he was ugly, or cruel. He was a good man and would no doubt make a fine husband.
"I think it will be an early spring, with all of these flowers in bloom," Niklaus said, reaching down and picking a blue wildflower and handing it to you.
"I do too," you replied, smiling and putting the flower in your hair.
"Nik, I thought you were sparring with me!" Henrik yelled, trying to gain the attention of his older brother
"Very well!" He responded, giving you a wink before running after his little brother, he picked up Gerda and gave her a spin, making her laugh.
You laughed at the sight and watched the three of them. Niklaus, Henrik, and Gerda. Playing around and having fun, but soon the time would come for them to grow up, and you feared what that would bring.
Tumblr media
The sound of laughter and music filled the longhouse, you were sitting on a bench between your mother and father, enjoying the feast.
Henrik and Gerda were dancing and playing near the fire, laughing and smiling. They had been inseparable all day, both excited about the wedding to come.
Your eyes found Niklaus, sitting on the other side of the longhouse, chatting with his older brothers, Finn and Elijah.
Your engagement was to be announced tonight, in front of the whole clan, but you had already heard the news. You were going to be Niklaus' wife, and the next lady of the Mikaelson clan.
But you would be lying if you said that the thought didn't fill you with dread. You didn't feel ready to be a wife.
You saw beautiful Rebekah, Niklaus's sister, dancing with her friends. Her long blonde hair in a thick braid with ribbons and flowers. She was laughing and having a good time, while you sat alone and tried to hide how nervous you were.
She came over and took your hand. "Come dance,”
You smiled and joined her, spinning and twirling around.
"I've heard the news, congratulations," she said. "My brother is a very lucky man."
"Thank you," you replied.
Rebekah pulled you in close. "Soon you will be with child and I'll have a little niece or nephew to dote on," she said, her hand moving down to touch your belly.
You laughed, a blush spreading across your cheeks. "Yes, that is my hope."
"Well, the sooner the better," Rebekah replied. "Nik is getting antsy."
"What do you mean?" You asked.
"There has been word that the Blackthorne clan has been moving in this direction," she said. "Nik's been preparing for a battle, he says he will not let them pass our borders."
"I see," you replied. The Blackthorne clan were known to be ruthless and merciless. Their leader, a man named Einar, was notorious for his brutal raids and pillaging. It had been said that he once slaughtered an entire village just because they refused to give him one of their daughters.
"My father doesn't think they will make a move, but Niklaus is worried," Rebekah said. She gave you a searching look, "He lusts for war and glory."
You frowned, looking at her. "What if he's right? What if they attack? What will happen to us?"
"Don't worry sweet girl, you are apart of my family now, and the Mikaelsons will protect you," Rebekah promised.
As the night went on you feasted and danced with the people of the village. There was food and drink for everyone, and the mood was jovial.
You saw your father sitting next to Mikael, they were deep in conversation and your father was nodding along with whatever the elder Mikaelson was saying.
Mikael suddenly stood, raising his mug and the room fell silent.
"Tonight, we celebrate the engagement of my son Niklaus to the daughter of Erik," Mikael announced, looking over at the two of you.
"To a bright future, may they have many sons to lead us into battle and may their union bring great fortune to both families."
The clan erupted into cheers, banging on the table and lifting their mugs.
"A toast, to Niklaus and his bride!" Mikael called.
Everyone raised their mugs, cheering for the couple. Niklaus approached you and wrapped his arms around you. “It seems the gods have finally smiled upon us," he whispered.
You nodded and smiled at him, trying not to let him see the uncertainty in your eyes. He kissed your cheek and danced with you, the feast continuing on.
As the night wore on, you sat by yourself, watching the dancing and laughter. Rebekah and her friends were talking, Henrik and Gerda were still spinning around, and Niklaus was deep in conversation with Elijah.
Your parents had left, they were a bit older and didn't stay up late like the others. You wanted to leave as well, but Gerda was having so much fun, you didn't want to cut her night short.
Kol came over, sitting down beside you. "You should be out there having fun, not sulking here all alone."
"I'm not sulking," you replied.
"Yes you are," Kol said, grabbing a piece of bread from the table and stuffing it in his mouth. The two of you had grown up together, and he always knew when something was wrong.
"Well, the whole marriage thing has been weighing heavily on my mind," you confessed.
"Oh, come on, Nik's a fine warrior," Kol remarked. "My brother has always been taken with you, he will make a good husband... I think," he teased.
You laughed a bit, pushing him gently. "I know, I know, but I just wish to wait a bit longer. It seems like this has all happened so quickly."
Kol put his arm around you. "You will come to love him, and even if you don't, I am sure the bedding will be enjoyable."
"Kol, stop it!" You giggled, shoving him away.
He grinned and took another piece of bread, "You go home and rest, I'll watch Gerda."
"Are you sure?" You asked.
"Positive," he said. "You are both family now, I will protect her as if she were my own blood."
"Thank you, Kol," you replied, giving him a kiss on the cheek. "I will see you tomorrow."
You made your way out of the longhouse and back towards your home, the cold night air filling your lungs, you breathed out a plume of heat into the chilly air, perhaps winter was not quite done yet. As you walked you thought about Niklaus, he had been so kind and thoughtful lately, he was a good man, you had no reason not to marry him.
You were pulled from your thoughts by the sound of rustling in the bushes, you paused and listened. It was probably just a fox or some other woodland creature, but something didn't feel right.
Suddenly, you were knocked to the ground, a man pinning you down.
"Don't scream," he hissed.
You struggled beneath him, trying to push him off. He smelled of mead and sweat, his face was covered in dirt, his teeth rotted and bloody.
He pressed a blade to your throat, you stopped moving and let out a gasp.
"Do not fight, and I won't hurt you," the man growled.
He had black hair and was wearing a thick fur cloak, his body pressed against yours as he held you down. He pulled at your dress, ripping the fabric and exposing your skin.
"No!" You cried, struggling against him.
He moved his hand up and grabbed your face, his fingers digging into your jaw.
"You are a pretty one, will fetch a good price," he said, running his hand down your body and touching you roughly.
You heard the sound of a horn blowing, signaling a raid. Panic coursed through you.
The Blackthornes had come.
The man was distracted momentarily by the sound and you took the opportunity to grab a rock and smash it against his head. He grunted and fell back, letting you go. You scrambled away and stood up, running to your home.
You heard the shouts of the villagers as they prepared for battle, the sounds of swords clashing and people dying.
As you ran, you saw a group of warriors, led by Einar Blackthorne, storming through the village, killing and setting everything on fire. By the time you got to your house, it was in flames.
Your parents were nowhere to be seen and your heart dropped. You picked up the wood axe sitting on a stump and broke down the door, the heat and smoke burning your lungs.
"Faðir!" You shouted, coughing and looking around. "Móðir!"
"Y/N," a voice called. You saw your mother, kneeling on the floor and holding her hands over her chest.
"Móðir!" You cried, rushing over to her. "What happened, are you alright?"
"Dóttir," she said, reaching out to you, her breathing was labored and her hands were covered in blood.
Your father lay next to her, a wound in his stomach and a pool of blood surrounding him.
"Faðir," you gasped, looking at his lifeless body.
"Gerda," your mother croaked, clutching at your dress. "Go get Gerda,"
"I will," you assured her. "But first I must get you out of here."
You tried to help her stand, but her breathing became ragged and her eyes fluttered closed.
"Móðir?" You said, shaking her.
She didn't respond and her head slumped forward, her body limp in your arms.
"Móðir!" You screamed, tears streaming down your cheeks.
The smoke grew thicker, and the fire was getting closer. The wood beams above cracking and falling.
You laid her down gently, the smoke stinging your eyes, the heat of the flames singeing your hair and burning your skin.
You stumbled through the flames, making your way out of the house, you coughed and sputtered, trying to breathe in the clean air. Your village was engulfed in chaos and flames, you could see the invaders killing and stealing, their cries echoing through the night.
"Gerda," you whispered, trying to catch your breath.
A figure appeared in the darkness, a man wielding a sword, his body covered in blood and his face masked by the smoke. He was wearing the Blackthorne colors of gray and red. You raised your axe and struck him down, the blade slicing through his neck. Rage and adrenaline coursed through you, the fury of Tyr fueling you as you continued on, searching for Gerda.
Your family, your clan, your home had been destroyed. Everything you loved was burning, but you were determined to find your baby sister.
Your ran back to the longhouse, it was in flames, the heat radiating off of the building.
"Gerda!" You screamed out for her, trying to find her in the chaos.
You could hear the sound of fighting and screams, the smell of burning wood and blood filled the air.
Suddenly, a man emerged from the smoke, the same one who tried to rape you earlier, you raised your axe again, ready to strike.
But the man grabbed the blade, stopping the swing mid-air and pulling it from your grasp. He smirked and grabbed you by the hair, throwing you to the ground. You looked up at the longhouse, the place where you had spent so many nights with the Mikaelson family, the place where Gerda and Henrik were.
"You will make a good prize," he growled, running his hands over your body.
"No!" You screamed, thrashing around and he laughed and pinned you down, his hands tearing at your dress.
You could hear the cries of the villagers as they fought for their lives, the screams of the children and the clash of steel.
A hand grabbed the back of your attacker's neck and he was ripped away from you, you gasped, scrambling back. You watched the men fight viciously, exchanging blows.
Your savior was wearing the Mikaelson colors of green and blue, and you realized it was Niklaus.
You stood and grabbed your axe, raising it and attacking other raiders as they tried to approach, giving Niklaus the advantage.
"Y/n! systir!" You heard the sound of your name being called and you looked up, seeing Gerda and Henrik being hauled off by the raiders.
"Gerda!" You shouted, running after them.
You couldn't reach them, another raider jumped in front of you, swinging his sword. You ducked and avoided his blow, swinging your axe and catching him in the side.
He fell to the ground and you kept running, chasing after the raiders and your sister. You ran as fast as you could, dodging the raiders who were trying to stop you. But it was no use, they caught you and dragged you back.
Snow was starting to fall, and you could feel the cold biting at your skin. Two raiders had you by the arms, dragging you along the cold ground, you knew it wouldn't be long before you saw Valhalla. They threw you onto the back of a horse, the cold metal of a knife pressed to your throat.
"Don't struggle or we'll throw you into the fire," the man behind you growled.
You kicked him hard, and he struck you across the face, but you didn't care. Your family was dead, your home was gone, and Gerda was being taken away.
Suddenly, the men on the horse yelled, and the knife was pulled from your throat. You looked up to see a figure in armor, holding a Mikaelson shield in one hand and a sword in the other.
He struck down the Raiders, their bodies falling to the ground. You were disoriented from the blow, unable to see who had come to your rescue.
The figure grabbed the reins of the horse, and the beast whinnied, bucking wildly. He pulled you against him, the metal of his armor cold against your skin.
"Shhhh," he whispered, trying to calm the horse.
You recognized the voice, it was Elijah, Niklaus’ elder brother.
"We have to get out of here, can you ride?" He asked.
You nodded and he handed you the reins. You could see the bodies of the raiders scattered around, and the sounds of the battle were beginning to fade. Snow and ash fell from the sky, and the scent of death hung in the air.
"Come on," Elijah said, pulling himself up behind you.
He wrapped his arm around you, taking the reins back. "I will take you somewhere safe," he promised.
"What about your family? They took Gerda and Henrik," you asked, tears stinging your eyes.
The horse took off, galloping through the woods and away from the destruction. You looked back, seeing the flames and smoke rising into the night sky, and you wondered if Gerda was still alive.
"I saw Niklaus going after them, we have to hope he can save them," Elijah replied.
You held onto the horse tightly, the wind and sleet whipping against your face. The snow falling heavier now, the trees bare and the branches covered in a layer of ice.
Elijah's voice cut through the cold, "I know a place we can shelter from this storm,"
The wind howled and the snow fell heavily, obscuring your vision. You could barely see a thing, but you trusted Elijah.
You didn't know how long you'd been riding, but eventually, Elijah stopped the horse and helped you down.
He brushed away some snow to reveal a small cabin built into a overhang of rock. He tied the horse to a post under the eaves of the structure and opened the door, motioning for you to enter.
"It's not much, but it will keep us warm," he said.
The cabin was made of logs and stones, and there was a fireplace in the center. You shivered, your body numb from the cold.
Elijah started a fire with some wood that was already stacked inside the cabin, and soon the room was filled with warmth and light.
You sat on a bench, the flames from the fireplace flickering, casting shadows on the walls. Elijah sat beside you, and you could see the exhaustion and sorrow in his eyes.
"What of the rest of your family? Your parents? Rebekah? Kol? Finn?" You asked.
Elijah let out a sigh, "my parents and Finn were killed, I lost Kol and Rebekah, I don't know where they are or if they're even alive,"
He turned to look at you, his dark eyes full of sadness. "What about your parents?"
You looked away, a lump forming in your throat. "Dead as well."
You tried to stop the tears, to be strong, but the thought of your mother and father, and all those people, gone, was too much to bear. You buried your face in your hands and sobbed, the grief washing over you like a tidal wave.
Elijah placed his cloak around you and got up to stoke the fire. He added more wood, and the flames crackled and popped.
He sat back down and you moved closer, resting your head on his shoulder, his arm wrapping around you. You were both tired and hurt, and you knew that this might be the last night you ever spent alive. You were both silent for a moment, the weight of the night's events heavy on your minds.
"I am sorry about your family," Elijah whispered.
"As I am sorry about yours," you replied, looking up at him.
This was the first time you ever really spoke to him, as children you were always running around with Kol and Rebekah. Elijah was the stern older brother, the one who was always scolding you for being reckless. But now, he seemed so different.
He placed his hand on your cheek, his thumb gently wiping away the tears that were rolling down your cheeks.
"We will find them, and send every single one of those Blackthornes straight to Hel,"

Niklaus was smiling as he feasted and celebrated his engagement. The scent of meat and ale mingled with the smell of pine and fire, the flickering candles casting a warm glow on the room.
He sat with his brother, Elijah, watching as the members of the clan drank and danced. The atmosphere was festive, and everyone seemed to be having a good time, Niklaus loved a good party, especially one that was about him.
"Isn't she a beauty, brother?" He remarked, watching you from across the table.
"She will be a fine wife for you," Elijah replied, sipping his mead.
"Do you think she will let me bed her before the wedding? I do wish to know what pleasures await me," he grinned.
"Niklaus," Elijah sighed, "You cannot speak of your betrothed in such a manner, have some respect."
"Relax brother, it is just the two of us," he shrugged.
"Still, a woman's virtue is not a subject to be jested about,"
"Oh come on, 'Lijah, I'm only joking. Even the gods would agree that the wedding cannot come soon enough." He said, taking a sip of his mead.
The men were sitting around the table, feasting and drinking. Niklaus watched his little brother Henrik playing with Gerda, they were dancing and spinning in circles.
"I'm surprised Kol is not joining in on the festivities," Niklaus said, nodding to where Kol was sitting alone at the end of the table.
"He's been moody lately," Elijah remarked. "His courting of the Blackthorne girl did not go well, he returned with an arrow in his thigh."
"He was lucky to come back at all," Niklaus muttered. "Father won't listen to reason when it comes to the Blackthornes."
"What would you have him do Niklaus? Wage a war we cannot win?" Elijah replied, his eyes flickering over to where you were talking to some of the women.
"This is how I see it. We either bring the fight to the Blackthornes or wait for them to bring the fight to us," Niklaus stated.
"You two talk of politics like wise old men," Finn piped up. "But you're nothing more than fools, unprepared for battle. The Blackthornes are a mighty clan, and if we were to attack, we would lose everything we've built here."
"When have you seen battle Finn? When you put your trousers on in the morning? Or when you wipe your ass?" Niklaus laughed, grinning at Finn maliciously.
Finn rolled his eyes and ignored the insult, "This is a peaceful village. The only bloodshed we've seen is at the hands of wolves and bears. Father is right to avoid conflict."
"I stopped listening after you said 'father is right', that means nothing to me," Niklaus remarked, downing his drink.
"Well, then I shall take my leave and continue this conversation with someone who actually has the capacity to understand it," Finn huffed, getting up from his seat.
Elijah shook his head, "He does have a point Niklaus. War is not something we can take lightly, the consequences could be dire."
Niklaus watched as Finn went over to you and offered his hand, no doubt asking you for a dance. He watched as you politely rejected Finn. He smiled to himself, you really were the perfect wife.
"We can't avoid the Blackthornes forever. Eventually, we will have to make a move," Niklaus stated.
"Not today, Niklaus, not tonight. Tonight is a night of celebration," Elijah said. "You cannot lust after war on the night of your engagement."
"Fine," Niklaus sighed. "We will discuss this tomorrow,"
"Very well," Elijah agreed.
"I'll hold you to that," Niklaus said, downing the rest of his mead, he watched as you danced with Rebekah, he loved the way you smiled and laughed.
He felt a sense of peace and happiness, knowing that soon, you would be his wife. He looked to his father, who raised his mug and toasted to the union, a gesture that surprised Niklaus, but also put him at ease.
The music began to play, and the men started dancing with their wives. He came over to you, and told you how the gods were smiling down at your union. You looked so beautiful, and he could barely take his eyes off of you.
He danced with you for a while, before Elijah approached and asked for a private word. The brothers found a quiet corner, away from the crowds and music.
"What is it?" He asked.
"I've gotten word from a scout that the Blackthornes are near. Their numbers are great, and they are preparing to attack," Elijah informed him.
"When will they be here?" Niklaus asked, his mind already racing with possible scenarios and outcomes.
"On the morrow, if the scouts are correct," Elijah replied, his voice tense.
"Then we must prepare. I'll rally the men, and we'll set a trap. We'll lead the Blackthornes into the woods, and ambush them," Niklaus said, his eyes flashing with excitement.
"Father has it well in hand, enjoy the celebrations Niklaus," Elijah said. "And be careful not to drink too much, I will need your help in the morning."
Niklaus nodded, but couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that had settled in the pit of his stomach. He glanced over to where you were sitting, chatting and laughing with Kol. You were so happy and carefree, and he wanted to protect that, even if it meant risking his life.
Niklaus spent the rest of the evening drinking and dancing, trying to push aside his worries. You left not long after, and he went to follow, but Kol stopped him, "Let her be Niklaus. She's tired, and I'm sure she has a lot on her mind."
He begrudgingly agreed and stayed, dancing with Henrik on his shoulders as Gerda did on Kol's. It was late, and he could feel the effects of the mead and ale taking hold.
"Off to bed now little Henrik. I'll walk you home sweet Gerda," Kol said softly, setting her down and kissing her cheek.
Suddenly the sound of a horn rang through the night air, and they froze, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end.
"To arms!" Mikael shouted, his voice echoing through the longhouse.
The room erupted into chaos, the men rushing to grab their weapons and armor. Niklaus laughed, rushing to grab his sword, "So much for a peaceful night!"
He grabbed his shield and rushed outside, joining the fray of battle.
The smell of blood and sweat filled his nostrils as he swung his sword, cutting down raider after raider. Glory and honor filled his heart as he fought, but the thought of you was never far from his mind.
He had promised you that he would keep you safe, and he intended to keep that promise. Your father was old and you had no brothers to defend you, tonight it was his duty. He headed towards your home, but stopped at the sound of his sister screaming, he turned to see Finn swinging wildly at Einar Blackthorne.
His eldest brother was standing in front of Rebekah, she was holding a sword with shaking hands.
"Finn, don't!" Rebekah pleaded, watching him try to fight Einar, but it was an uneven match, Einar struck Finn across the torso with his axe and he crumpled to the ground.
Rebekah fell to her knees at his side, "No! Finn, no!" She cried, clutching to his body.
Einar grabbed Rebekah by the hair and dragged her away.
Niklaus roared and chased after them, but was cut off by a group of raiders, and he slashed and hacked his way through them, searching for where his sister had been taken in the chaos.
Kol was fighting nearby, the young warrior was up against a beast of a man, he stabbed Kol in the arm and he collapsed to the ground.
He heard the sounds of Kol's screams, the boy was fighting for his life. The sight of Kol, bloody and beaten, snapped something inside Niklaus.
He ran towards the man who had stabbed his brother, his eyes full of rage and fury. The man was large and strong, but Niklaus was faster, he plunged his sword into the man's chest and twisted, watching as the life drained from his eyes.
Niklaus could almost hear the drum beats of war, as though the gates of Valhalla had opened, and his ancestors were cheering him on.
The scent of blood and death was thick in the air, and the sounds of clashing metal and screams filled the night. The ground was covered in the bodies of the dead and wounded, and the snow was stained crimson.
He pulled Kol to his feet, and saw Elijah fighting off a group of raiders, his movements a blur as he sliced and cut.
"I can't find Rebekah, they've taken her!" Niklaus cried out.
"We will find her, brother. I promise," Elijah replied, his gaze fierce and determined.
Niklaus could see the fires from the longhouse, the smoke rising into the sky. His family's home was burning, and the village was being pillaged and raided.
Elijah pulled his younger brothers into an embrace, his hands on their shoulders, "our father and mother have been stuck down, I could not save them,"
"Finn?" Kol asked, his eyes darting around, looking for the eldest brother.
"Gone," Niklaus replied.
The three brothers looked at each other, the weight of their losses settling over them. Elijah pulled his younger brothers into an embrace, their foreheads touching.
"I will find Rebekah, I promise. Niklaus, find Y/N, get her to safety," Elijah instructed.
"But brother-" Niklaus began.
"Now!" Elijah roared.
Niklaus and Kol exchanged a glance and nodded, and Elijah took off in one direction.
Niklaus and Kol began to search the village, but all they found were the bodies of their people, dead and dying.
The sound of your screams caught Niklaus' attention, and he rushed towards the noise, Kol close behind.
They found you, being held by a raider, he was ripping at your clothes, and you were fighting him with all your might.
Kol saw Rebekah being loaded onto a cart and he rushed after it.
Niklaus' vision turned red, and he charged at the raider, pulling him off of you and tackling him to the ground. His blood was boiling, and he couldn't stop his rage.
He slammed his fist into the raider's face, again and again. The sound of bones crunching and the taste of blood filled his senses. He attacked him like a rabid beast and he watched you get to your feet and lunge at another raider, cutting him down with just a wood axe. He smiled and laughed at the sight, the goddess Freja possessed you, beautiful and deadly.
He heard the sounds of Gerda's screams and watched you chase after her. He went to follow but was knocked over by a blow to the head.
He rolled over, the world spinning around him. He tried to stand, but he stumbled and his vision blurred. It was like everything was moving in slow motion, and silence fell.
He saw you being dragged away, kicking and screaming. He saw Kol, fighting a few paces away, his movements becoming slower and sloppier as his wounds took their toll. But he had saved Rebekah, she was helping him stay upright, the two of them fighting back to back.
He saw a raider raise his axe to strike Kol, and he saw Rebekah push him out of the way. Blood burst from her face as the blade made contact. She fell to the ground, clutching her head.
It was as if Thor himself had struck him with lightning, he forced himself to stand, roaring with pure rage. He grabbed a spear from the ground. He hurled it, watching as it impaled the raider, a look of surprise and pain on his face as he fell to the ground, dead.
Niklaus rushed towards his siblings, grabbing them and dragging them to their feet.
"Go!" He shouted, picking up Rebekah and dragging her towards the tree line, Kol close behind.
He looked back, trying to see you, but you were gone.
They stumbled into the woods, the sounds of the raid fading into the distance.
"Where's Elijah? Henrik, Gerda, Y/n?" Kol asked, panic in his voice.
Niklaus didn't reply, the weight of his sister and the wound in his side making it difficult to breathe.
"Niklaus, where are they?" Kol repeated.
"I- I don't know," Niklaus panted, stumbling over a branch.
The trees loomed above them, the darkness of the forest threatening to swallow them whole.
They continued to run, the sounds of the battle growing distant.
"We will find them. But first we must get Rebekah to a healer, she will die if we do not," Niklaus stated, his voice low and determined.
"We can't just leave them," Kol protested, his voice cracking.
"You don't think I know that!" Niklaus yelled, louder and angrier than he meant to.
Kol was quiet, the only sounds were their labored breathing and the crunching of leaves beneath their feet.
They walked for what felt like an eternity, the pain in Niklaus' side growing worse with every step. The rapidly falling snow making it hard to see.
Niklaus could hear Kol sniffling and muttering to himself, his younger brother was barely holding on.
He was struggling too, the guilt and pain eating away at him.
He had failed you.

he is the bastard prince after all.
nikolai lantsov in love
warnings : none
for more : masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
nikolai lantsov became an unspoken tragedy the moment he was born. he loved stories as a kid, stories about lands far far away, of beasts and princesses, tales of voyages and sunken ships, of mermaids luring unsuspecting fools to their deaths, and of course stories about true love. he wanted to live the stories he couldn't write but he knew they weren't for him, he is the bastard prince after all.
nikolai lantsov believes falling in love is like lying naked in a field of roses. love makes you vulnerable, pricks your skin and bleeds your heart dry and then maybe, just maybe, you can seek comfort in the gentle caress of the blood red petals.
nikolai lantsov is not weak because nikolai lantsov craves love, he is one of the few who dare.
nikolai lantsov is falling for the saint with the golden light and only hopes there's someone to save him.

The Secret Exchange Diary of the Beauty and the Tyrant (His POV)
These translations are not intended as a replacement for the game. Please support Cybird by buying their stories. Expect grammatical errors. Not 100% accurate.
CW: Slightly Suggestive
Tumblr media
Emma: “Prince Silvio, would you like to exchange diaries?”
Silvio: “Ha?”
We were chillin’ out in bed after taking a bath together when Emma suddenly proposed an unexpected idea.
Emma: “We’ll show each other our diaries.”
Silvio: “Who would do something so embarrassing? I ain’t gonna do it.”
Emma: “You really think it’s embarrassing? Your voyage log is in a book, you know?”
Tumblr media
Silvio: “Those two are different things. I won’t do it even if you ask me to.”
(Her head is really full of such fantasies.)
Emma: “Fine.”
Not expecting me to disagree, she easily backed down.
Emma: “Then, it’s okay if I send you my diary alone, right?”
Silvio: “What’s your goal here?”
Emma: “It’s a secret.”
(I don’t get it.)
I could tell she was up to something, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
(Never mind. If she’s satisfied with it, fine.)
Silvio: “You’re going to send it anyway, aren’t you? Fine, I'll go along with it.”
Emma: “Thank you!”
She giggled and hugged me around the waist.
Tumblr media
(I don’t really get how women think.)
Just like what she said, from that day on, she really did send me her diary.
Today I holed up in the castle's library to learn about the history and transition of Benitoite.
I've always known that the country is famous for its sea and trade. However, it was Prince Silvio's voyages that gave Benitoite the edge over other countries.
He had three major voyages in the past.
All of them were his greatest achievements that had already been compiled in history books.
My fiancée was really cool. I couldn't help but fall in love with him even more as I read about him in history books.
But what he achieved so far was not limited to voyages.
I'd like to know everything about him.
I might fall in love with him each time and suddenly want to hug him, but I hope he forgives me then.
(........)
(How can you write something so cringy?)
After reading her diary during my break, I closed it, and for some reason, my face wouldn't stop blushing.
It was so embarrassing that I almost jumped into the water but resisted and just ruffled my hair.
Tumblr media
(But what's in it for her by giving it to me?)
(It's not like she has anything special to tell me. If anything, it just makes me feel good.)
(This is like a love letter now. Ah, damn it.)
It was sickening as a trader to benefit from the diary alone because the principle in business is fair trade.
Receiving Emma’s diary alone wasn’t fair.
(If she's only giving this to make me write a diary, then that's quite impressive.)
She might be a sassy woman, but I didn’t think she would use this kind of tactic.
(No point dwelling on it. I just have to ask her.)
Tumblr media
Silvio: “Why do you want to exchange diaries?”
As soon as I finished my official duties, I stormed into her room and blurted out these words.
She was apparently studying hard, with a stack of history books on her desk.
She widened her eyes at my sudden visit, but stopped writing.
Emma: “I heard a rumor that you might be going on a voyage soon.”
Tumblr media
(You already heard about it, huh?)
It was just a minor voyage一one that would leave the castle empty for a few days. But despite knowing this, Emma didn’t look too happy.
Emma: “This is the first time I’m going to be separated from you here in Benitoite.”
Emma: "I know you often go sailing, and there'll be times when we won't be able to see each other in the future, so I thought if I wrote a diary, I'd miss you a little less."
Silvio: "I see..."
I ended up clutching my head and grunting.
(If that's the case, you should've said so from the start. Why can't you do something as cute as this?)
Silvio: "It wouldn't make sense if you were the only one writing the diary."
Emma: "That's not true."
Emma: "Just having my diary will make you remember me when you go on your voyage. Pretty wicked, huh?"
(What's so wicked about it, you idiot?)
I ruffled her hair messily in annoyance at her overwhelming cuteness.
Emma: "Are you mad?"
Silvio: "Why would I be mad?"
Emma: "Because it was pretty selfish."
Silvio: "*sigh* It's not even close to being selfish."
(To be honest, I was planning to take your diary without telling you.)
Emma: "Then why did you mess up my hair?"
Silvio: "I just feel like it."
Emma: "Don't mess it up just because you feel like it!"
Tumblr media
Silvio: "Shut up. I'm in the mood for this."
Now that I'd heard the reason, I couldn't bring myself to be embarrassed.
As I continued to mess up Emma's hair, I remembered again that no Benitoite businessman should ever break the most basic and important principle.
(It ain't my style, though.)
(Tch, I guess I don't have a choice.)
Tumblr media
A few nights later, I returned to my room after finishing my work and heard the sound of lively footsteps thumping from the corridor.
Emma: "Prince Silvio!"
Silvio: "!?”
The door swung open with a bang, and Emma jumped into my chest like a rabbit.
Without giving me a chance to react, she suddenly hugged me, causing my body to freeze in surprise.
Silvio: "How many times do I have to tell you not to startle me?"
Emma: "This is not the time for that!"
She moved away from me and held up a diary.
It was the diary I purposely left in her room when she wasn't there.
(I left it there because I couldn't stand to see it being read in front of me.)
Emma: "I didn't expect you to write it."
Emma: "The content一"
Tumblr media
Silvio: "Don't say it! Don't say it out loud!"
Emma: "I can't?"
Silvio: "You can't, you idiot."
(I want to get the hell out of here right now.)
Anticipating this, she blocked my way.
Emma: "Then let me tell you what I think of一"
Silvio: "I don't want any feedback!"
Emma: "I'll only say one short phrase."
I tried to cut off her words, but she quickly covered my mouth.
(This bitch...)
Emma: "I love you!"
I gulped, and my heart thumped loudly in my chest as I saw her face up close, beaming with delight.
Silvio: "You're getting carried away."
Emma: "Of course, I'd get carried away if I read that. It was like a love letter一"
This time, I put my lips on hers and took the words I couldn't bear to hear.
Silvio: "Don't say anything else."
Tumblr media
(I don't want to remember it.)
Every time she tried to speak, I kissed her lips and entwined my breath with hers.
I held her hips and felt a slight tremor in my palms as I deepened the exchange of our tongues.
(I won't let you say anything cheeky for a while.)
Just to be sure, I kissed her more deeply, and lewd wet noises echoed around the room.
I knew that if I did this, she'd be even more embarrassed than I was.
When I took everything away from her, Emma turned her teary eyes upward, her breath uneven.
Emma: "Are you embarrassed?"
Silvio: "So what if I am?"
Emma: "Nothing."
She only grinned and said nothing about what I did, which would normally make her blush and complain.
Silvio: "Are you sure you want to be smiling like that?"
(Is my diary really making you that happy?)
I pushed her against a nearby wall and put my knee between her legs.
When I forcefully shook her, I could see from her expression that her composure had vanished.
Emma: "W-What do you think you're doing!?"
Silvio: "If you humiliated me, it's only fair that you should be humiliated as well."
Emma: "Ngh…I didn't humiliate you."
Silvio: "You ain't convincing me."
I unbuttoned her blouse and forcefully pulled down her upper garments.
Tumblr media
As I mercilessly squeezed her exposed breasts, she began to moan.
(I was trying to keep you quiet, but if you keep making that kind of face, I wouldn't be able to hold back either.)
I lifted her skirt and continued to stimulate her directly with my knee.
When I smirked at the faint wetness I felt through my clothes, she noticed and looked away, blushing.
Emma: "Did you really hate the diary so much?"
Silvio: "If I really didn't like it, I wouldn't have done it."
I let out a small laugh, and despite her becoming somewhat disheveled, she laughed as well.
Emma: "Then, please stay with me for a little longer."
Silvio: "Ha?"
Emma: "Is that a no?"
(.........)
There was no way I could resist her request, seeing how she carefully held the diary.
Tumblr media
Silvio: "I'll go along with you as much as you want if this makes you that happy. Damn it."
Swearing, I hold Emma in my arms and lay her on the bed.
As I sank her into the bed, the diary slipped from her hands, its pages flipping open.
I'm off to the shipyard today for a meeting to discuss the new voyage.
I'd most likely be sailing in a few weeks at this rate.
I plan to return in a few days, but I kinda feel bad leaving you alone.
We'll use an unknown route this time, so the danger is uncertain. This is why I can't take you with me.
I'll be back as soon as I can because you seem to be more lonely than I thought.
As you know, I'm a businessman before I'm royalty.
I will probably go on less risky voyages as I take over the throne, but I don't intend to stop because Benitoite has made rapid progress by crossing rough seas and creating new trade routes.
My way of doing things is different from my old man's.
Tumblr media
I may make you lonely and worried, but I will spoil you when I can be with you.
I'll keep up with the diary, and if there's anything else you want me to do, just let me know.
I'll even do a few outlandish things for you.
I can't help but fall in love with you, too, every single day.
Fin.

Spoiler-Heavy Review/Thoughts on "The Last Voyage of the Demeter"
The crowd at the theater grew to about 15, so still pretty quiet.
Short version is that I enjoyed this movie thoroughly, but it is truly gruesome. The entry will start below the cut with spoilery warnings, because even having read the book, there were some things that caught me off guard.
Warnings for this film include:
trafficking of a young woman as a blood bag/bride for Dracula
Use of racial slurs against both a Black and a Romani character
deaths of all animals on board, including livestock and a young boy's beloved dog - shown with full gore
death of three crew members by burning in the sun after vampiric possession, including the young boy (the captain's grandson)
One of those three choosing sunlight as their method of suicide rather than allowing themselves to fully turn into a beat.
In fact, no one dies peacefully - this version of Dracula is emphasized as truly beastly, relishing the fear of his victims.
I know we've all been rooting for the Captain (named Captain Elliot in this version), but the true protagonist is Mr. Clemens, played by Corey Hawkins. We never get his first name, but we learn that he's a Black English doctor making his way home from Bulgaria/Romania, and he offers his services to Captain Elliot when a previously hired hand refuses to touch anything marked with Dracula's symbol - the stamp of a black dragon.
Other characters include: Captain Elliot and his young grandson Toby, Anna, the young woman given to Dracula as a captive by her village, and the men of the crew, all of whom have sailed with Captain Elliot before.
Then of course, there's Dracula himself. I saw some reviews saying he's shown far too early in the movie - but it worked for me. We find out that Anna was locked in his coffin with him and was meant to sustain him for the whole voyage - so when we see Dracula, he's weak and wracked with hunger for losing his food supply when Clemens finds Anna and starts treating her. Since we see him like that early, there's room for him to grow to almost full power as he burns through the animals and then the crew.
I enjoyed just about every performance in the film, but Corey Hawkins (Clemens), Javier Botet (Dracula), and Woody Norman (Toby) were particular highlights. Clemens is your classic cynical scientist with a heart of gold, Dracula speaks less than you would expect but still has that taunting air, and Toby doesn't read as older than he's supposed to be.
As story beats go, I think I appreciated Anna's the most. I've said in my reread of Dracula that I wish modern adaptations did more with the people of Transylvania hating Dracula, and this version presented that in Anna's character. She's lived under Dracula's shadow as long as she can remember, even before her village elders handed her over, and once she's freed and recovered some of her strength, she's finally able to fight back. I'm a sucker for a character who knows they're doomed but still tries to do the right thing, and Anna is that in spades.
THE LIGHTING IN THIS MOVIE WAS ACTUALLY EFFECTIVE!!!! The daytime scenes were vibrant, and all the nights scenes are lit by an enormous full moon and several stars. It makes the shadow work less muddied than you might see in a more modern-style horror movie.
The movie ends with Clemens technically surviving, but still deeply traumatized and literally scarred - he and Anna scuttle the ship and jump overboard, but not until after Dracula has drunk enough from Anna to curse her and he's badly hurt Clemens' neck. Anna gives herself over to the sun so that Clemens can get to shore, and the closing scene is clearly a sequel hook as he hunts for Dracula in London - or perhaps the Count has already realized that Clemens is on his tail. This worked for me because the film stuck with Clemens. I kept expecting him to run into one of the core Dracula characters, and I'm not sure I would have liked that.
This is all a very long-winded way of saying that this was a film I truly enjoyed, and it is a LOVE LETTER to the book's thesis - the supernatural may have come out of hiding, but if we band together, evil may be halted - even for a little while.
Rating: 8.5/10

The Supernatural fandom has this term, the Ghostfacers Effect, named after the episode Ghostfacers, which is presented as though it is an episode of the in universe Ghostfacers webseries where some dweebs do your average real life ghost hunting bullshit. In the episode Sam and Dean are both swearing up a storm using real swear words, not the "frig" they typically otherwise use, and are bleeped out with the Ghostfacers logo covering their mouths the way they do in reality TV. The Ghostfacers Effect then refers to the idea that we the audience do not see the true story of what is happening in universe but instead an unreliable recounting of the true story, which is why we typically hear "frig" despite knowing the characters actually say "fuck."
Which, ignoring the concept of a story "really" happening in a way disconnected from the canon because that's a can of worms I do not want to touch right now, is generally a good explanation for why characters who you would reasonably expect to swear don't. And you can of course apply this to any character and say that even if they don't swear in canon, you know they do really.
You could say Captain Kirk always swears as much as he does in The Voyage Home, we the audience just aren't being told the truth about it usually. But I reject this notion. The point of this post, why I explained the Ghostfacers Effect, is to say I refuse to believe it in relation to Captain Kirk. The Voyage Home is an outlier which should not be counted and 99% of the time the most scathing insult Captain Kirk will level you with genuinely is "go climb a tree."

♡ "My Angel.." ♡
♡ Buggy x Fem!Reader ♡
♡ ~10k words ♡
! Warning: Drunken arguing, yelling, overall angst !
Buggy sat at a table at the bar with his crew, eating lots of food and drinking alcohol by the mug. You, Buggy’s wife and the mime in his circus, sit at the table, as Buggy talks about his adventures with his crew. You watch and listen in as he drunkenly rambles to his crew, a drunken blush painting his cheeks.
He finished eating his food, letting out a big burp as he did so.
"Well, you see, lads, that's exactly what happened when we went and fought that evil warlord on the Grand Line! And, well-  we did it easily, too. We defeated his entire crew all by ourselves. And, well- I defeated him in a one-on-one duel with my bare hands and feet. Yeah! That's how it went down!" You giggle at his grossness and listen to his story that was clearly exaggerated for shock value. He smirked and burped again. "And then, after wiping the floor with that punk of a leader, I went on and defeated every single one of his followers all by myself. Just one-on-one combat against all of them. So it's true, lads. I am the fastest and strongest man the Grand Line has ever seen! Ha!” You stifle a laugh and roll your eyes at your husband's antics. He began laughing as well, drunkenly as he continued his story. "And then, I did what any self-respecting man like myself, would do after defeating all those tough opponents! I, uh... I took the beautiful, young lady they had as their captive, and we had a night we would both never forget” That comment caught your attention as you finally joined the conversation: “Good lord, for the last time I wasn't a captive!” You say laughing, rolling your eyes. He laughed. "Hehe, oh, that's right... that's right. But the part about how we had an amazing night after is true, right? Heh. Hehe...." You pause, thinking. “Yeah Yeah, sure we did.” "Heh, you know it, my little angel! What a night that was, right? Eh?" Buggy said drunkenly laughing again. “...” You remained silent, blushing a bit at his oversharing habits. "Oh come on now, honey! Don't you want people to know just how amazing we had it that night? Hehe..." “You're so gross…” you say, quietly laughing and looking away. "Hehehe - hic - I know I am, but I'm *your* gross husband, aren't I?"
“I guess you are..” You roll your eyes and laugh. "And I suppose you’re my gross, and rather annoying wife, eh?" He says teasingly as he laughs again. “Wooooow.. I see how it is Cap'. I guess you won't get any physicality from me tonight.” You say sarcastically teasing him.
Buggy laughed and pretended to pout. "Oh nooo.. What would I do without my little wife's cuddles on a night like this? Eh? What a tragedy....." You thought of another teasing comment, but you didn’t realize where it would take the night. “I mean I wouldn't be shocked if you didn't care. I've heard tales of you being a manwhore.”Buggy's drunken face instantly looked angry, and he narrowed his eyes and pointed at you as if he were looking for a fight.
"Hey, watch what you're saying, lady! That's just false rumors started by my enemies because I am such a great pirate. A manwhore?? Yeah right. I only have eyes for you, my little angel, haha... Heh...." You roll your eyes teasingly, letting out a sarcastic “Mhmmmm.” His face softened and he laughed. "Hehe, yeah... yeah, you're right, honey. I would never lay eyes on another woman other than you. Even if I was out and about searching for treasure and I came across a gorgeous, young woman who looked absolutely delicious...." Your eyes widen as you begin to overthink about his comment. Throughout the night, he continues to make “jokes” about finding another prettier woman on his voyages. Eventually, you sigh, getting up from the table begin to walk away looking slightly panicked and hurt. Buggy suddenly stood up from his seat and came up behind you. He wrapped his arms around your waist and laughed as he spoke again. "Hehe, why you…! Are you jealous? Heh, why would you be jealous over my eyes for another woman, hmm? You know I would never have my eyes on anyone other than you, right? Heh..." You yank away and keep walking, ignoring him. He followed after you, holding your arm tightly as he began talking again and laughing in an annoying manner. "Oooo, oooo... you're so upset! That's hilarious! You're jealous, aren't you? Well, don't worry about it. I just want to tease you a little bit. But, rest assured. I could never love anyone as much as I love you, little angel...." The drunk clown didn’t realize that his comment earlier had heavily impacted you. You let out a quiet, “Don't touch me.” as you pause in your tracks, saying sternly. Buggy scoffs and laughs drunkenly as he pulls you into an embrace and holds you tightly against him. "Ooh, are you getting so angry at me that you don't want me to touch you? Hehe, but... why? I'm just trying to flirt with my wife. Is she getting jealous at the possibility of another woman stealing my eyes away from her?” You push him off, refusing to turn around to face him. “Don't. Touch me.” You said slightly louder as you began to briskly begin walking away. Buggy follows behind you.
"Hehe, why not? Are my husbandly gestures too much for you, little angel? Perhaps I am getting a little too affectionate, aren't I? Heh.... hmph.. I'll just go back to my buddies then. They'll appreciate me better than you do..." You sigh, losing your patience. “Cool. I really don't give a shit. I'm sleeping on the balcony tonight. Sleep by yourself, or the other women you claim to have.” Buggy scoffs, pretending to look hurt by your words as he sighs. "Oh... Oh, is this how it's gonna be? After all the lovely words I've said to you just now and you're gonna reject me like that? Heh, well fine. You can go sleep on the balcony. I don't care. I'll just find someone else that may appreciate me better..." You snap. “You know what” You grab your bag and look at him. “I'm going home.” Because the ship is stopped somewhere on land, you begin to walk towards the exit of the ship. Buggy's face turned red and he looked pissed. "What?! Do you think that bothers me or something?! Why would I care if you go home, huh? There are plenty of other girls that would love to see me and my amazing self! Yeah..." He took a step towards you and smirked. "But you wouldn't wanna be missing out on all the fun activities I have planned for the rest of the time on land.. Right?” You start to become blinded by your rage. “This! This is my fucking reason, Buggy! I can't do this shit with you anymore. You never fucking care cause you "never do any wrong". Go find another fucking woman 'cause I quit,” and you walk off the ship. As you walk away, tears form in your eyes from the pent-up emotion being held in. Buggy froze where he was standing. His breath hitched as he took a couple of deep breaths, and he stood there for a moment, processing what had just happened. Then, in a drunken and angry rage, he burst out laughing and followed behind you. "Haha... Haha - you don't really think you can leave me without me coming for you, right? My baby... my little angel... where are you going?"
“I'm not yours anymore.” You said stoicly. “‘There's plenty of other girls that would love to see me and my amazing self’ is what you said, right? ...Go fuck yourself, clown.” Buggy suddenly grew upset and enraged, and he rushed up to you to grab you as he began yelling at you. "You can't just leave me like this! You hear me!? I don't care what we've been through! I'm still your husband and you're still my wife! We're married and we're gonna make a family together! Remember..?" You ignore him, not moving from the spot you’re standing. His grip on your arm tightened as he spoke again, with more fury and anger in his voice. "So you're just going to abandon me like this!? After all we've been through together?! What about all the years we've been together and all the adventures we've shared?? I've given everything for this ship and for you and for our crew, and you just abandon me like this and you don't even care at all?!" “I DON'T FUCKING CARE? YOU TOLD ME YOU WOULD FIND ANOTHER GIRL ‘BETTER THAN ME’ AS SOON AS I STOOD UP FOR MYSELF.” you yelled back as the situation became more intense and heated. "WELL, THAT WAS JUST A BLUFF! I DIDN'T MEAN IT, OKAY?! I ONLY SAID THAT TO GET A RUSH OUT OF YOU! I WOULD NEVER REPLACE MY LITTLE ANGEL FOR ANYONE ELSE!" You finally turn around to meet eyes with him, your eyes full of tears and your face makeup running down your cheeks. “..Well, you still said it.” Buggy looked back and saw your beautiful, tear-streaked face, and he couldn't help but feel some empathy for you in this moment. His expression softened as he suddenly realized how much he hurt you. "I'm... I know you're right. I did say that... but, honey.. baby.. just know that I would never, ever, replace you for another woman. You will always be my beloved angel. You drop to your knees and start to sob. “I don't want to leave.” you sobbed out. The drunkenness and anger left him as he saw how much you were sobbing. Buggy immediately dropped to his knees next to you as he moved his arm around you, holding you tightly against him, and put his forehead against yours.. "Shhh... It's okay, baby. I'm here. I'm here. I'm sorry for everything. I- ... I'm sorry for what I said.. I just spoke out of anger. Please, just shh... please, angel.." As you process his words, you mutter out “I want to forgive you.. but I shouldn't. I can't.” "But... I'm really sorry! I'll never say I don't love you again! I swear! I'll stop being such a drunk. I'll stop letting the alcohol control me like this! I promise! And- and I will change my flirtatious ways, too. Please, I'll change! I promise you! Just... Just don't leave me... I don't want to live without you... I can't stand this life without you... who'll brush my hair? Or.. Or make me brush my teeth? Or nag me to clean my cabin? Or.. love me?” You sigh. “Buggy..” He rubbed your back as he felt your heartbeat calm down, and he sighed warmly.
"Hmm... I don't know what I'd do without my little angel. Come on, let's go back to the cabin, and I'll give you a proper apology. Yeah? I'll be fully sober in the morning, I promise..." You decide that maybe.. He deserves one more chance. “..Alright.” You say, letting out a sigh, standing up and looking up to the taller man. Buggy also stood up and wrapped his arm around you as he began guiding you up the stairs and back inside the ship. "See? All better now. I'll never let anything happen to you. I won't let anything get between us ever again. I love you, my angel."
..”I love you too, Captain.”

People have praised Nosferatu, Renfield 2023, The Last Voyage Of The Demeter, The Hammer films, Pink's Dracula Ballet, Dracula A Comedy Of Terrors etc vs one or two who might have said they are not good because they diverge from the story, and it's not true that the latter is supposedly A Sweeping Phenomenon We Must Adress.
It's kinda odd to go "we must make a stand for hugely popular media that ultimately affects the public's perception of the characters against (checks notes) a few randos on tumblr.com" Most of the criticized media is for example why the general public thinks Dracula is about a girl having no agency because she loves hot rapey vamp bf due to destiny (which is why I never got into it at first), let's get a bit of a perspective here.

❝ And who will give me courage? ❞
❝ So this is what death sounds like. ❞
❝ I would offer you my sword, but I seem to have mislaid it. ❞
❝ It is not your sword I want, ser. ❞
❝ He . . . he killed them . . . ❞
❝ If they hadn’t tried to stop him — ❞
❝ Your men did what they were sworn to do. ❞
❝ Grieve for them. Honor them for their valor. But not now. You have no time for grief. ❞
❝ Your grief is mine. ❞
❝ I swear it, you will have your vengeance. ❞
❝ Will that bring him back to me? ❞
❝ I prayed to know what to do, but the gods did not answer. ❞
❝ I shared his bed and bore his children. Do you think I love him any less than you? ❞
❝ I will mourn for him until the end of my days, but I must think of the living. ❞
❝ I want you to live your life, to kiss a girl and wed a woman and father a son. ❞
❝ I want to write an end to this. I want to go home. ❞
❝ Why shouldn’t we rule ourselves again? ❞
❝ It was the dragons we married, and the dragons are all dead! ❞
❝ There sits the only king I mean to bow my knee to. ❞

Japanese Q Speedround: Google Is Right There
Hi, it’s mod Rina. It’s time to speedrun some asks.
@troublsomeidiots asked:
I'm writing a character who is both black and Japanese and lives in japan in a primarily Japanese area and wanted some help in writing a person who is biracial who lives in primarily homogenous society? Like what kind of struggles she would face, especially as a person who has never met anyone who is black other than in passing?
Open Youtube. Hit search bar on Youtube. "being black in japan" "half black half japanese in japan" "black hafu in japan". Try different combinations of keywords. Bon voyage.
(neither Marika nor I are Black. We will not be speaking to experiences we do not have.) (we can outsource to some of our friends if you ask a specific question. These are not specific questions.)
(Black Japanese readers--please feel free to comment if there’s something you want OP to know!)
@layzeal asked:
Hello! I have a question regarding family/last names in Edo period Japan. My story takes place in 1816, my character was born in 1796 from a commoner family (that she gets separated from a few years later, and in a different country).
I've read that regular people in Japan didn't adopt the use of family names until Meiji restoration, but I'm not sure how true that is. Would a family of commoners in that period carry a family name, or would they only use their first names? And any idea if that family would have to present a last name when moving/passing by a different country that does use them?
It's important for me to know, since the existence of a last name or not would quite heavily influence how hard it'd be for the family to meet again, and which means would be used. Thanks in advance!
When I gave Google some keywords from your query, the second result explained how pre-Meiji commoners without family/clan names used bynames to distinguish themselves, and gives additional data on them. Maybe give it another Google?
@weavefeather asked:
Hello, I am a writer and I really need some advice. I am wotking on my book since a few years, maybe 2 or 3, and I finally got the points together how it could begin. My plan is that my MC (named Nanami Kudo) is an lawyer of the FBI and has to go to her homecountry Japan, beacuse they send her to foreign investigations about a syndicate of people.....  And the some things happen, like her brother who still lives in jp doesn't really welcomes her, some complications with the police and so on...
But thats not the point! Im really struggling to take in words how she gets to the other country, leaving her home behind and her partner she worked with. Do you have any advice on it, maybe how to structure it, some words or scenarios that fit?
How she gets to the other country: …..She flies there.
How US government agents/workers relocate and what the experience is like: That's your job to google. We are not government agents. Try anecdata on reddit, reddit AMAs, and Quora.
It’s unclear what her relationship/proximity to Japan is. What kind of nikkei is she? Is she mixed race or monoracial? How much Japanese can she speak? So many unknowns. Go read our Japanese tag and appreciate just how many ways one can be a Japanese person. Until then, you are nowhere near close to being able to write a nikkei homecoming plot.
Lastly, you are the author. Give us scenarios yourself and come back to us.
In Conclusion
Guys, you all gots to google some more. It’s beneficial to both of us: not only do we get to help with more specific things and have enough info to do so, but you don’t have to wait months until your ask comes through the backlog only to receive an answer you could have researched in anywhere from a couple days to 3 minutes.
~ Rina
“But Rina, I don’t know how!”
You’re in luck!
First, try one of our own post on Google shortcuts.
Second, stay tuned for some very relevant posts...

revival of hearts.
synopsis. ever since jason formed the outlaws, he thought his love for you slowly slipped away, especially in artemis' presence, but then he realized something that's because of you.
꒰ pairing ꒱ — jason todd x fem! reader.
꒰ genre ꒱ — angst with a happy ending.
Tumblr media
Should you truly act as if everything is fine? You genuinely don't know.
Those many months he spent apart from you felt like ages, since it had almost been a year for him without your touch. It lingers, the way his thumb would brush against the back of your hand so delicately. You missed it, dearly.
You couldn't utter his name without disbelief. Only his face, with some long-lasting war scars. Jason, it merely comes an expression of incredulity, just like the day he told you you were trapped in another's loving hand.
Until now, your heart had been unable to bear the weight of the anguish struck in your chest, caught in the liberation of a broken heart, that he had found another, just right when he had said it right to your face on that meet up. He did fine without you. Artemis must've been a great company to him.
Is he actually to blame? He is, after all, a vigilante, which means he gets a lot of chances to meet fresh faces. You'd always assumed that the two of you shouldn't be in proximity, that a vigilante and a regular citizen couldn't prevail, and the uncomfortable truth became a reality.
It had been a year since you haven't seen him, though such a thought would linger in the most random moments. Since you failed to let him escape your mind— his image still haunts you, his name still spoken amongst the stories from the underworld and in the dark alleyways.
Because you blocked his number, the plethora of missed calls and text messages couldn't reach you, blinded by your pride and anguish, you didn't know. and he merely abandoned what the two of you shared.
Though, toward the end of Jason's journey with the Outlaws, an unconfirmed connection he had with Artemis, eventually came to a finality too. Their hearts were linked, but for a brief time, they thought everything about them was platonic.
Artemis bid goodbye to Jason with an epiphany realization of their tie on the eve of their departure, imploring him to return to you no matter what, telling him that perhaps his true home was in your psyche. They parted ways after that. It is unknown when fate will bring them back together.
But, for the time being, Jason allowed himself to bask in the afterglow with his erstwhile comrades before attempting to discover and stand in your path once more.
He spent a week separating himself from you and gathered ideas for ways to get you in touch with him again.
As the sun shone brightly, you stood out among the golden daytime crowd, with strands of light falling on your hair and eyes. A few feet away, he had seen you with both of his eyes and was suddenly caught by the actualization that he too missed you.
He was drawing nearer to you gradually as you followed closely behind the crowd. His feet were betraying him; he isn't quite ready yet, but this will be the turning point.
A hand abruptly made contact with your shoulder, causing you to be frozen in your steps. Your curiosity was piqued by the lovely parole of your name, prompting you to turn around as your eyes met those softened gazes of piercing pupils cast in your way, which was a bit close to you.
You stayed motionless for a nanosecond until you recognized the person in front of you—the one who was there in your voyage of amorous reverie, which you thought had ended. It caught you off guard since your heart was bursting out of your throat and dropping out of your chest at the same time.
In front of you, he stood tall yet his heart was weak. "I'm sorry for all those months I couldn't get to you," he continued, regretting in tone and eyes that he never returned. He can imagine the content look on your face when there hasn't been conflict between the two of you in those earlier times.
Despite the fact that it failed to convince you to forgive, doubts still remained as evident in your trembling voice when you questioned, "and I waited for nothing. Were you happy with her?" Your uneasy sigh accompanied the inquiry.   Witnessing you in such a state, where your heart visibly sank due to the distressing memory of his departure, caused him distress as well.
He hesitated upon being asked that question sincerely. Despite the lingering emotions within him, Jason felt compelled to respond truthfully, confessing that he still holds deep affection for you. "Yeah," he murmured softly. Anxious, you await his subsequent answers, desperately attempting to prevent tears from blurring your vision.
"But I realized," he mused wistfully, tugging at his lips with a hint of bitterness, as he delved into memories of his encounters with Artemis. Despite the passing of several months, thoughts of you lingered in his mind, yet articulating them seemed unattainable at present; the elusive words he sought eluded him still.
"She was just a companion, a friend, a sister..." He let out a long breath, acknowledging his defeat with a firm expression. With deeper exhalation, he confessed, "Even if I was with her, I still think about you." His words continued to reveal the truth, and the heavy feeling on his chest disspated, providing a slight sense of comfort, albeit he remained conscious of your startled response. He knows, it was a lot for you to take in.
You stayed hesitant, both of you fortifying for yourself against your apparent sudden outbursts. "I know I made a mistake but will you give me a chance to make it up to you?" This question, you've yearned to listen to, although your gaze betrayed you as tears of warmth streamed down your cheeks, you quietly sniffed. You were still angry with him, but you couldn't reject the fact that your affection for Jason still existed.
He feels pain witnessing your current state, especially when he is the cause of your tears. Unsure of how to help, he scooped you into his arms tenderly while you continue to weep, releasing all your whirl of emotions with each teardrop. He remains steadfast, ensuring that you won't slip from his warm and safe grasp.
Jason displayed patience as he awaited your calmness, gently stroking your back in an attempt to bring you comfort.   His heartache for you slightly diminished when the tears in your eyes dried off.
"Are you okay?" Was all he could manage was to witness your attempt at regaining composure, yet you remained entangled in a state of fragility, you hastily nodded. He sighed in a slight relief.
"I promise, I'll make it up to you no matter what." He added, as he hadn't allowed his arms branch out, but was still securely curled about you, as you buried your face in his chest, allowing yourself to be alleviated by his tender touch. This causes his lips to curve into a contented smile, and because you seek solace in his touch, he is more than happy to oblige.

which fandom has it the worst when it comes into missing the point of the media they consume?
I can't really think of one, because I'm struggling to determine where "missing the point" ends and "ignoring the point" begins.
Actually shit, I have a scratchpad here about that somewhere.
What is media literacy? It's your ability to comprehend a work. That's all it is. It's when a work presents a theme, and that theme actually registers with you. So an example of bad media literacy is when Star Trek fans complain about newer shows "injecting politics" into Star Trek when Star Trek was always so political it bordered on straight-up communist.
But I'd go as far as to say that even that isn't their fault, because before Deep Space Nine came out and ruined Star Trek with the plague of serialization, it was always really good at balancing those really insightful episodes with episodes where Kirk punches another green alien, or Riker's beard seduces a woman, or the Doctor learns how to daydream and fantasizes about being his own self-insert fanfiction character.
Star Trek is just as goofy as it is political. So it's possible in the reality that is broadcast TV for someone to just not see those episodes. This is also true when Deep Space Nine comes around and just has less of those episodes because it's focused on chasing the trend of serialized Science Fiction about the Space Navy.
Voyager had way more of those episodes, but Voyager was the undeserved black sheep of the franchise for a long time. So it's not even that they didn't get it, they have always applauded Star Trek doing things other than being "Fully Automatic Luxury Space Communism: The Series."
And for several entries in the franchise, it was doing that. So even the best example of bad media literacy is way more complicated than Twitter would have you believe.
Fallout is probably the second best example, as it has tons of right wing fans in spite of the fact that the franchise as a whole has always been deeply critical of American jingiositic nationalism.
And yeah that's a deep paradox right there…
Until you factor in that the most popular entries in the franchise are the ones that don't do that. When you remember that, you realize it's suddenly very easy to be a right wing, jingoistic Fallout fan. You just have to not play the games that told you to your face that you're an idiot.
Which is a whole... two of them.
To give a less politically charged example, Baldur's Gate 3 has an origin character called The Dark Urge, which is a Bhaalspawn whose story is about resisting the impulses of their tainted blood. This goes hand in hand with another character, Orin the Red, which is both a second and third generation Bhaalspawn, being the daughter and granddaughter of Sarevok (no you didn't hear that wrong).
A lot of people who play Dark Urge save it for an evil murderhobo run, but I've heard many people claim they love the idea of a good-aligned Dark Urge that resists Bhaal's taint in stark contrast to their sister.
What most people who have played this game are unaware of is that this idea is literally the entire plot of the previous games. Gorion's Ward and Imoen's conflicts with their brother Sarevok, and the rest of their siblings among the Five, and how they resist Bhaal's essence and strive to do good is the entire plot of the best series of RPGs ever made.
Yes Good-Aligned Dark Urge players, this story would be compelling. I would know, because I played it twenty years ago.
And if I were a weaker human being, I could call this Bad Media Literacy, but I know better. Most people who have played Baldur's Gate 3 flat out haven't played the older games. They might vaguely know the story, but the level to which the story is about Nature versus Nurture would fly over their heads. This is partly why I often say that Baldur's Gate 3 is a better game if you haven't played the originals, because it often steals storylines and plotlines directly from the original games wholesale and repackaged them with more preservatives and lube.
I haven't found an instance of poor media literacy that has not been able to be explained away by the simple reality of personal preference or the reality that no human being can consume every last piece of art on the planet.
Most people don't have time to see everything, and honestly it isn't a crime to be dumb. What I have seen is this technical sounding term be thrown around by fandoms angry about discourse they don't like, because the worse a work is the more adversarial and abusive the fanbase is.
In the eyes of fandom, the themes of a work are self-evident of it's quality. It's impossible to both understand a work's themes and still think it isn't good. So if someone thinks their favourite thing is bad, they must not have understood it. This is an offshoot of the way fandom treat's a trope's mere presence as quality itself regardless of execution.
Fandom is full of self-protective bullshit arguments like this.

Why I Still Love J/C
Okay, I just really have to get this off my chest. There are people who don't like Chakotay, or won't ship him with Janeway because of the actor or the bad way Native American representation is shown. Now if you just plain don't want to mess with the character, don't like him, whatever, fine. But please don't let something an actor said or did keep you from loving a character or a work he was in. And don't ignore bad representation - try to improve on it.
I love J/C because I look at what is on screen. Their chemistry and caring relationship is incredible and inspiring to me. Everyone is welcome to their own ships, but that's the only one I have because it just seems so obvious to me. But I keep hearing people gripe about Beltran, or the representation. You can fix that, or read work that is fixed. It's called fanfic. If you're into the fandom at all you can see that fanfic Chakotay is not just like Chakotay on screen and definitely nothing like the actor.
The actor who played Icheb did some very bad stuff, but I hardly hear anyone say they won't use Icheb in a story because of this. So why Beltran? Why can't we just ignore these people instead of calling attention to them over and over? I'm not saying justify what they did, but remember they are real people with their own faults. They played a role, and even the most enthusiastic Star Trek actors are not as in love with the show as its fans are. It's hard to understand it, but it's true. I've watched podcasts with Tom and Harry's actors. They had forgotten many episodes, and didn't even know people didn't like Threshold. Why? Because this was a job for them. Maybe they enjoyed it, but it was still a job.
As far as representation goes, yeah they did an unbelievably horrible job, it's there from the beginning when Paris says racist stuff about "Indians". So I try to research, find stuff that is more accurate hopefully, or at least more respectful. It's a challenge, but worth it because there isn't enough good literature about Native Americans. And as far as Chakotay's character goes, there was, like so much of Voyager, wasted potential. So I try to add in that potential. Many fanfic writers do this wonderfully. I can recommend so many. His background in the Maquis, his faith, etc. We have that power.
TL;DR: If there is a ship you love, or a character, I really hope you don't let actors or bad writing turn you away.
