I didn't plan on writing a Christmas drabble this year, but then @babyjapril posted the most perfect gifset and it inspired this little Japril Christmas movie AU. Hope you'll enjoy, and happy holidays to you all!
___
Christmas in Bozeman, Montana, is always a treat, and even more since April moved away for med school and then for work. Seattle is not that far, and she tries to visit her family as often as she can, but there’s something special about the town during the Christmas season. She absolutely loves spotting the Christmas lights in the streets as she makes her way to her parents’ property, the snowy mountains offering a picture-perfect background for the season.
This year is no exception, meeting all her requirements for a perfect Christmas. At home, the lights in the Kepner’s Christmas tree are sparkling, there are so many wrapped gifts under the stockings that opening them on Christmas morning would surely take hours, and her mother spends most of the time in the kitchen, making treats and baked goods at the speed of light.
A few hours after she arrives, April finds herself already in the kitchen. As she helps her mother add a layer of white frosting on some cookies freshly out of the oven, Karen Kepner starts listing a few last-minute details about the festivities. “Oh, and you know Robert Avery, who owns the Jefferson grill in the city outskirts? Tall, blue eyes, makes the most perfect cup of coffee? Well, his son is visiting him for the holidays, for the first time in forever, apparently. He’s a doctor too, you know! Lives in New York, or Boston, or somewhere East. So I invited them both for Christmas Eve, because the man shouldn’t have to cook on Christmas, he already does it enough during the year, and he helped your dad once with the tractor, remember? So I thought–”, and at that point, April, used to tune her mother out when she starts rambling, offers a few “yeah” and “is that so?” now and then, and thinks no more of it.
The next day, she meets Jackson, Robert Avery’s prodigal son. At her mother’s insistence, she plays the part of the perfect tour guide and shows him everything Bozeman has to offer, she takes a few walks with him around town and laughs when he admits he’s not much of an outdoor man, they even sit down once in the cold, watching people skate on the ice rink and sharing stories about surgeries and their respective hospitals (Boston’s Mass Gen seems way more peaceful than Seattle Grace Mercy West) before she dutifully walks him back to the Jefferson Grill. Robert Avery is a sweetheart, so she’s not surprised that his son is as charming, and they hit it off as much as two big city outsiders in a small town can. His laugh when she offers him anecdotes about her years in Bozeman warm her heart, and she finds out she actually looks forward to Christmas Eve, even if it means her sisters taking a dig at her for daring to be a single, twenty-something surgeon living alone a few states away and her mother insisting she eats her weight in stuffing.
Christmas Eve is magical, Robert Avery regaling them with tales from his youth, Jackson complimenting her mother’s cooking skills and having a second helping of everything, her father looking at the whole family with a wide smile, and for a few perfect hours, she truly feels the Christmas cheer she always hopes to find when she comes back home.
And then her overactive imagination just has to ruin it.
After dinner, everyone gathers around the fireplace, swapping stories she must have heard a hundred times. She loves her family, she really does, but she needs a break, so she goes to the kitchen and sets out to get a head start on the dishes. Jackson volunteers to help out, drying the plates she washes, and they soon talk and laugh like they haven’t just met four short days ago. They only stop when she washes the last of the plates, and she doesn’t know what happens, but his fingers lightly brush her arm as he takes the plate from her hands, and she shivers. His touch is electric, and she raises her head, finding his eyes already on her. His hand find her again, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, and she can’t help but stare at him.
From the living room, she hears her parents exclaim that it’s time they get a move on or they’re going to be late for midnight mass, another cherished Kepner tradition, and the moment is gone. Jackson snaps out of his trance and steps backwards, shaking his head, and it’s not long before he and his father leave, his eyes avoiding her as he profusely thanks her mother for her generosity.
So much for a perfect Christmas holiday.
She goes to bed, feeling confused and, she’s adult enough to admit it, disappointed. And because she’s April Kepner, she soon starts to feel extremely annoyed with herself. She always does this, having huge expectations that don’t go well when confronted to reality, and she’s a fool for thinking that this time would be different. That a fancy, handsome surgeon would play his part in the Christmas movie she’s apparently written in her head, and act out cliché moments under the Christmas lights.
The next morning, waking up before everyone else, she quickly dresses up and goes for a short walk to try to clear her head. Still replaying the moment in the kitchen in her mind, she takes comfort in the fact that she’s due to go back to Seattle in a few days. She’s not going to let her delusional brain ruin what is otherwise a perfect Christmas, thank you very much, and she can easily avoid Jackson Avery until then and not make a fool of herself.
Well, it would be easier to avoid him if he wasn’t standing in her parents’ driveway as she comes back from her walk.
His eyes seem clearer than ever, and she manages a small smile, hoping he’ll credit the cold for her blushing cheeks. She stares at him a few seconds too long before she remembers her manners.
“Hi, um, did you forget anything yesterday?”
“Actually, I did,” he answers in the low voice he seems to use just for her, and she really wishes her body would stop reacting so strongly to his presence.
The snow starts to fall just then, but she barely registers it, because she can’t tear her gaze away from him. He gets closer to her, shakes his head with a soft smile on his lips, as if he can’t believe what he’s doing, and slowly raises his hand to hold her neck.
Their lips touch, hesitantly at first, then more insistently, and as they kiss for what seems like hours under the falling snow, she can honestly say that this Christmas is definitely a perfect one.

The part that I’m struggling with is somewhat circular logic because if Buddie doesn’t go canon then who do Buck and Eddie end up with romantically (if anyone) because at this stage with a show that has 2-3 seasons left (or actors that might only sign for 1-2 more seasons) how exactly do you create satisfying endgame arcs for both of them amongst an ensemble show especially with the both character’s histories. And if the answer is “we can’t do that” then shouldn’t it be Buddie canon….thus the circular logic 😭😭😭. Like if they could somehow introduce well acted and dynamic LIs for them then sure could make peace with platonic “family” Buddie. I just can’t handle another “meet cute” type LI that is “cookie cutter” with forced chemistry. Would prefer to have Buck and Eddie be alone in that sense than end up in a bland relationship with no substance. TBH if I was OS and RG would peace out at that point once my contract was up IF financial stability existed elsewhere. We all know how OS felt about BT and RG was vocal in earlier seasons about Eddie not being ready to date. So wonder what his thoughts are if this “dating storyline” is going to be a thing or not.
I understand the confusion over who Buck and Eddie would end up with if *not* each other, and because I've always left the door open for Buddie not going canon 'til the very end, I have also considered the possibility that Buck and Eddie don't end up with *anyone* in the end (if they're both still on the show at that time) and that would be the show's way of saying "We would've done it if not for the backlash." The GA would still view them as platonic dudebro besties, but having them in a family moment with Chris or whatever would be for the fandom to *know*. As much as I love(d) to talk about the "If not Buddie then why" aspect of their story (together and as individuals), there has consistently been that nagging feeling that I am (and we as a fandom are) giving the show too much credit. Just off the top of my head, I can think of four instances where a show went in a "romantic" direction that had longtime viewers cursing themselves for wasting so much time hoping for a happy ending: - That '70s Show (showing my age because I watched that finale in real time): Jackie (Mila Kunis) ended up with Fez (Wilmer Valderrama), who always had a crush on her, but she showed no interest in. The audience assumed she would get back with one of her exes. (And now that the show is being rebooted, the character is in fact with one of those exes again. LOL.) - Grey's Anatomy did it twice :) First with Japril getting divorced and April going back to the guy she left for Jackson right before Sarah Drew had to leave the show; then there was Alex running off to be with Izzie and their kids (kids nobody knew they had until then, lmao), leaving his then-wife a note in which he said he already signed divorce papers! - Listen. I never got into this show, but people sure were pissed at that HIMYM finale. Not the endgame couple anyone wanted. (Notice those are all het ships that got screwed over?)
It would not AT ALL be surprising for Buck and/or Eddie to end up in relationships last minute or without much development over a full season (again). It all depends on who's *really* in charge (Is Kristen still there? Is Tim still only offering his input from a distance?) and what message they want to send. And for what it's worth, the more showrunners take criticisms to heart (because "It's MY show and I do what I WANT!!") the more likely they are to do something that awards them the last laugh.

Let's talk about Sam Wilson, Grey’s Anatomy and (White) people’s weird relationship with tears...
If you have been following me for some time, then you know that I love Sam Wilson, and that I like making parrallels.
After watching the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, one thing that has bothered me is the way Sam's feelings are not taken into account by the fandom, whether we’re talking about his feelings for other people, his emotions, his pain, or even the way he’s often left out of edits talking about pain in Phase 4, when we have seen several times that Sam was hurting too.
What does this have to do with Grey's Anatomy, you ask me? Well, I want to talk about a specific character: Jackson Avery.
Just to give you some context, Grey's anatomy is a show about surgeons in Seattle and the show has a lot of drama. One of the characters, Jackson Avery, fell in love with shy April Kepder, and after a wild ride, they ended up together. I used to love their relationship, Japril was “relationship goals”. The way they finally got together was also epic. Jackson interrupted April's wedding to another man and gave us one of the most, if not the most, romantic scene in TV history.
So we have this great couple, they're married, April finds out she’s pregnant and they’re really happy about it. Unfortunately, things didn't go well for them, they find out the baby has a rare condition and their baby, Samuel, passes away a little after his birth.
After that, April and Jackson were in a dark place and April enrolled in the army and went on several tours as an army doctor, because she needed to get away from everything, the pain, the memories, which was understandable. Jackson stayed in Seattle and waited for her, but after she came back one year later she told him she was planning to go back. jackson was not expecting that April would go back after they enrolled that first time.
I lost my love for that couple around that time. Not because April left Jackson, I understand that sometimes the pain is unbearable and you need to get away from everything. I lost my love for her and their relationship because during a heart-to-heart talk they had about their loss, Jackson accused her of running away and April said that it’s because she was dying: after their son’s death, she was dying. Then this happened:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can’t think of something more cruel to say to a man who has lost his child that he seemed “ok” with it.
And I understand April leaving for one year, I don’t blame her character for that. Everybody grieves in their own way. But after she said those lines, I could never want the two of them to get back together.
This man had lost his baby and she thought he was fine, only because he was holding it together for her. Trying to hold it together doesn’t mean it’s fine.
And I feel like this is how people treat Sam Wilson...They haven’t seen him cry, so they just assume he is fine, when they have seen at several moments that he wasn’t. The real problem is that when it comes to White characters, the fandom is able to imagine/see their pain even without the tears, but for Black characters it’s turns into Mission Impossible.
And they might be fictional characters, but it makes me wonder how those fandom people treat their Black friends when they are hurting...?
How come you’re able to write a million headcanons about Bucky being heartbroken after Steve’s departure, but fail to think about how Sam was hurting too?  Sam was Steve’s friend too, and contrary to Bucky... he didn’t get a heads up.
There are so many reasons people in pain don’t cry.
Some people refuse to cry because if the let the tears fall, they afraid they will break down and never recover. They think not crying is the last barrier preventing them from a total breakdown, and some people refuse to do it because they think that their family will breakdown as well.
Some people are unable to cry. Trauma affects people in different ways, and some people are so traumitized that they are unable to cry even if they wanted to.
Some people want to be strong and hold it together for their family.
Is it healthy? I’m not sure it is. Does it happen? Yes, and it happens a lot.
You cannot just assume someone is ok just because they’re not crying or they not sensitive. You have to pay attention to other signs as well...What they say...What they went through.
But no, people just ignore the pain if they don’t see tears, at least they do when the character is not White. How I know that? This is Bucky’s face when he said goodbye to Steve. See? No tears, and even a smile. But the fandom  is always talking about how Bucky was devasted after Steve’s departure. I’m not saying he wasn’t, btw, I’m saying why do you notice it for Bucky but fail to mention Sam?
Tumblr media
How come the fandom is able to see Bucky’s pain and not Sam’s?
Sam didn't cry but we saw his pain, we heard it, not only about Steve, but about Isaiah, his responsibilities,.... It wasn't subtle, it wasn't subtext. It was right there, it was text:
This is what he said the first time he sees Bucky:
Tumblr media
When Bucky asks if he's ok in the plane back from Madripoor, this is what Sam says:
Tumblr media
But Bucky ignored what Sam was saying because he was too focused on himself and so did the fandom.
At least Bucky has an excuse because he was written that way, and he was supposed to be portrayed as self-centered and clueless because it was a setup for the apology scene in episode 5, but what’s the fandom’s excuse? At least Bucky saw the errors of his ways at the end, but the fandom didn't.
This obsession with tears has to stop because tears are not the only expression of pain. Have you never heard people talk about how when they were at they lowest, no one noticed it? Yes, he’s not crying and having breakdown on screen, but we did see his pain on screen.
It's as if you considered that someone was hurt only when they were bleeding, but sometimes the bleeding is internal, sometimes you can't see the damage until it’s too late. If someone lived through a major loss and seems "fine", most probably they're not. I don't think that the fact that Sam didn't have a breakdown is bad writing. It is realistic writing. Would it have been good to see him cry, scream, or loose it ? Yes. Is it realistic that he didn’t? Also yes.
The fandom's weird obsession with tears is just another excuse to exclude Sam’s feelings again and again.

My Grey’s Anatomy top 25ish Update
fNoble
25. Winston Ndugu: I don’t know who he really is but if he makes Maggie happy I’m down to see him bit more.
Tumblr media
24. Nathan Riggs: Nathan didn’t do anything memorable, he was decent character who was Meredith loved since Derek.
Tumblr media
23. Cormac Hayes: Mac is awesome, I’m kinda sad that his wife died, I’m happy that he got sent by Cristina too. Mainly like him because his name and the fact he’s irish, like the accent too probably the first main character to have one.
Tumblr media
22. Derek Shepherd: He’s kinda of dick, but truly loves Meredith, children, and Amelia.
Tumblr media
21. Carina Deluca: The way I describe Carina Deluca she’s fun person and I’m glad she got to Maya. I don’t like Station 19 but she and Maya interesting me into watching it.
Tumblr media
20. Andrew Deluca: Nice day, loyal friend/love interest and or overall person. Him dying the way did is so random.
Tumblr media
19. Stephanie Edwards: Stephanie was been one  of most loyal and commit doctor and friend.
Tumblr media
18. Ben Warren: Ben is cool, he’s kinda reckless, but a partner that as busy Bailey is a good partner for her.
Tumblr media
Warriors
17. Link: Link is a sweetheart, so why are they making him like Owen, why does he want a kid so badly, and wants to marry Amelia when she’s not ready.
Tumblr media
16. Maggie Pierce/Ndugu?: Maggie isn’t the most interesting, a good sister and friends. She doesn’t remind me of my goddess Lexie.
Tumblr media
15. Jo Wilson: Jo is one of the strongest characters on the show, went through, I hope does the best OB/GYN and raising Luna.
Tumblr media
14. Levi Schmitt/Nico Kim: Here’s the thing is Levi is emotional person but Nico is a reserved person. Both Levi and Nico made mistake but some fans believe is Nico’s is the worst but, he’s just like any other Grey’s Anatomy character. I hope the  actor gets promoted to series regular  so we can see more of this adorable nerd and his sexy, beefy boyfriend.
Tumblr media
13. Amelia Shepherd: Amelia shown that struggle alot but has redeemed herself and to she to be good and badass person and surgeon.
Tumblr media
12. April Kepner: Didn’t like her in season 6 and 7 but evolve into hot and badass. Her season 17 appearance was disappointing.

Tumblr media
Callie Torres: I loved Callie, she’s friend, surgeon, partner, she’s good  even though she’s very whine and selfish sometimes.
Tumblr media
8. Arizona Robbins: Like Nico Kim, fan Arizona responsible for happened in her relationship Callie. They only hold her responsible for cheating and Japril baby. Them going to Africa to saved poor kids that can’t get a doctor was righteous but Callie kept whining. Treating badly after the plane crash, she’s loss her leg and her trust in Callie.
Tumblr media
7. Meredith Grey: Meredith is a strong person went through a lot and but came out bright and shiny.

Review of 17x14 “Look Up Child”
It has been three years since I wrote my last review of a Grey’s Anatomy episode.  After Sarah left, I stepped away from my fan accounts and did not plan on ever looking back.  Somehow though, through the dedication of our captains and the strength of the Japril fandom, we got one more episode that confirmed what we have known all along – Japril is forever.
The episode opens to Jackson driving through a storm and we can see in his eyes that he is fighting an internal storm as well.  He winces at his injured hand while his mind flashes through thoughts of holding Harriet with April for the first time, the pain of watching April marry Matthew, and meeting his dad.  These moments, along with many others have led Jackson yearning for more out of life, and so he returns to Montana hopeful he will find answers there.
The last thing Robert Avery expects, for a second time, is to find the son he left behind standing in the doorway of his restaurant.
“Everybody alive?” Robert asks.
Jackson making this journey again, after the way they left things before, could only be for one reason in Robert’s mind.  Jackson reassures him that is not the reason he came, and Robert relaxes easily into his friendly charm, offering coffee and a place for Jackson to “take a load off.”  He has no idea of the “load” Jackson truly bears.
Robert is awaiting the arrival of his co-worker so they can deliver pre-packaged meals to families in need in their community.  This gesture may seem small, but to Jackson, this is a subtle sign that he on the right path.  There is more he can do than what he has found within the walls of Grey-Sloan Memorial. Their small talk is awkward, and Jackson wants to get right to what he came for – answers.  Robert has other ideas.  There are sandwiches to be made and they can talk while they work.
After following Robert to the porch, Jackson realizes this sandwich-making process is going to be more time-consuming than he thought.  And so is getting the answers he came for.  He reiterates to Robert that he doesn’t want anything from him – not turkey, not coffee – just answers.
Jackson presses his dad for information about why he left the foundation, the problems he saw with it, and Catherine’s perspective on it all while Robert deflects the questions with vague answers and praise of the ham and turkey sandwich.  Robert is not ready to answer these questions because answering them would mean dealing with the memories of the past and the regret he carries.  So instead, he smiles kindly and puts Jackson in charge of the meat slicer, which leads to the first moment in Jackson’s life where his dad taught him how to do something. (Although we all know he didn’t teach him well!) This interaction allows Jackson to let his guard down just slightly and they find they have some common views on the Avery name, money, and pressure that comes with it all.  Jackson tries some of Robert’s “best in the state” turkey and Robert opens up about his own shame and abandonment by his father. It seems pain runs through generations of Avery men.
Maybe it is that realization, or the cup of Robert’s coffee in his hand, that makes Jackson relax enough to begin opening up.  He shares his desire to do more to change the system has seen fail so many people.  He isn’t even sure if he can, but he knows he feels compelled to try.  Robert agrees that people should do what makes them happy.  He did and he “never looks back.”
But Jackson does.  He can’t stop looking back and wondering why his dad was absent from every moment that mattered.
“I realize that it’s really messed me up…pretty badly. And, um, it just made it hard to maintain relationships and stuff.  Having this inclination to run away all the time.  And I know, I know, running away doesn’t actually solve anything.  I know that. So…and I’ve tried.  I’ve tried really hard to rid myself of the shame and the pain that comes with all that, and uh, you know just kind of doubled-down on being the best at everything – the best father I could possibly be.  I probably stayed in my marriage longer than I should have, went along with foundation business longer than I should have, but no matter what, when it gets rough I just end up right there, running into the woods trying to fight the you in me.”
What begins as a tearful explanation builds to all of Jackson’s pent-up emotions overflowing at his dad.  He is distracted and emotional, cutting his hand on the slicer with blood pouring out, while his heart pours out at the same time.
Robert tends to Jackson’s injury, and they both feel it is a simple gesture that holds more weight than they know what to do with.  Robert tries to make light of the situation by joking about a family practice, but it is the idea of them as family that sends Jackson to find fresh air on the porch. It is here where Robert finally answers Jackson’s question of “Why?”
Running is what Robert does when things get too difficult, and that is what makes Jackson so afraid. He feels the same pull.  Just before he cut his hand, he was running down the long list of things he feels he has done wrong. Does he truly believe he stayed in his marriage too long?  No. But to Jackson that is just one more way he is like his dad.  He is so messed up by the fear of turning into Robert that he breaks things off before they get too difficult, before he gets to the point Robert did.  If he can maintain a safe distance to the important things in his life, he won’t lose them and he won’t be like Robert.  “My divorce…maybe that would have been a good time for you to step in and share some wisdom.”  This isn’t who Jackson wants to be, but he is too scared of moving in either direction – scared of moving both toward or away from the things that matter, like April.  So instead, he suffers in an ambiguous middle ground.  One where he hasn’t completely abandoned anyone or anything and one where he hasn’t fully committed to anything either.  It is a balance he has tried to find for years, but it is also what is breaking him now.
Truth be told, even Robert cannot fully run from what matters.  From his cabin in the woods, he admits that everyday he regrets leaving, and he buys gifts for a little girl he has never met in hopes that one day he will.
“You’re not a runner. If you were, you’d have been long gone by now…you have it in your soul to do the right thing.  To makes things right.  And you didn’t just fix a disaster, you made it better…on your worst day, you are ten times the man I am.”
And it is with those words Jackson makes his decision.  He is going to do the right thing.  He is going to take what seems like a disaster and make it better.
Arriving back in Seattle, Jackson goes straight to the people who matter most.
Catherine is his first stop. He needs her blessing to take over the foundation.  Their money and influence can make life better for all people by bringing justice and equity to medicine and build a better future for Harriet.  Catherine’s Mama-heart breaks a little to see him go, but she cannot deny how proud of him she is.
With the rain still coming down, Jackson rings April’s doorbell and stresses over how he is going to approach asking her to move across the country for him.  How can he explain to her that this is not impulsive, this is not something he is doing on a whim?
Yet, when the door opens, all his insecurities are quickly forgotten because seeing April only reminds him of why they have always been each other’s person and how she has always trusted him no matter what.  She trusted him the night of the boards with her heart and virginity, she trusted him with the decision to induce her pregnancy with Samuel to stop his pain, and she trusted him to run away from her wedding and the life she thought she was supposed to have.  But this is different.  So much has changed in the past few years.  Would she trust him now?
Jackson will have to wait to find out, though, because April is frantic.  Harriet is sick and April cannot get her fever down.  Jackson sees how stressed she is and immediately gives April what she needs.  He takes Harriet into her arms, both consoling her and helping April calm down and have a moment to breathe.  They fall into their usual banter and affectionate teasing.
Their conversations and interactions throughout the episode give us small glimpses of what we should have had the past several years had their story been written they way it should have been.  They naturally fall into their place as the loving, concerned parents unable to sleep while caring for their daughter.  They move through the house and around each other as if this is a familiar dance that they have done hundred times before.
Harriet’s sickness doesn’t seem to be the only thing April is stressed about.  Her living room is strewn with laundry and she quickly tries to clean it up while Jackson reassures her in his “bank voice” that it is fine. Too many pillows, but otherwise, fine. Jackson continues Daddy Duty by dancing with his daughter and April gets a chance to take a much-needed shower…until the storm knocks the power out.
Jackson and April alone at night in a storm, surrounded by candles, is the perfect set-up for an epic reunion, and while they may not have utilized the kitchen counter like we wanted them, too, they did reconnect on a level of clarity and maturity that shows how much they have grown.
There is also that not-so-little issue of Matthew.  Japril fans spotted early on that April was missing a particularly important ring, but it was even more telling when Jackson asked her directly if her and Matthew are happy, and she responded with simply, “We are busy.”  For a marriage that the terrible writing of season 14 wanted us to believe was ordained by God, how sad that you can’t even pretend to be happy. That one line conveyed so much more than what was stated.  It was clear from that point that Matthew and April’s marriage was over.
April is not the only one beating around the bush.  She quickly calls Jackson out on his “cagey” behavior of commenting on her exposed brick instead of saying why he actually showed up at her house late at night in the middle of a storm.  She can read him so well she knows there is something more, which is when we finally find out his plan – he is going to take over the Avery Foundation. The catch is, that means Jackson, as well as April and her family, have to move to Boston.
April responds by questioning if this is what Jackson actually wants because it never was before.  Is he going to move to Boston and then fail or regret his decision?  And while this seems unsupportive and harsh, April has to ask these questions because, as we find out later, that is exactly what happened to her.  She thought she was choosing the right path by marrying Matthew, but not only has their marriage failed, she regrets that they even tried. But Jackson doesn’t know this yet, so to defend his decision he uses Matthew proposing to April as an example of how he unconditionally supported her which not only hints at Jackson’s jealousy, but reinforces April’s fear that making a decision this big may not be the best choice.  She sees happiness for Jackson in the safe choice.  He can continue to rebuild faces, give little boy’s hands, and help people breathe again.  Maybe if she can convince him to stay with what he knows he won’t feel the hurt she is feeling right now. “Why would you want to give all that up?”
Jackson knows he can do all of that and more in Boston.  He can make a positive change in medicine, April can continue her work with the homeless, and Matthew will just follow because it is April, and that is the one reason Jackson likes him.  “He is gonna want to follow you anywhere.”  Jackson understands the urge to follow April anywhere.  The night continues with wine, snacks, and comfortable conversation but they don’t come to an agreement on what their future holds.
The storm breaks and morning comes.  Jackson, recognizing that April has been overwhelmed lets her sleep in, and she wakes up to the sounds of Harriet and Jackson happily eating breakfast and we get a glimpse of their happy, family mornings that we all know Boston will bring.  The three of them laugh and talk over pancakes, orange juice, and throw pillows and April admits that she should have been more supportive of Jackson’s plans.  If only they could get their timing right.
The morning has brought with it clarity for April and she tells Jackson her answer is yes.  Yes, she believes he is “that guy.” Yes, she believes this could work.  Yes, they are going to Boston.  Shocked and surprised, Jackson offers to help talk to Matthew, but we find out that won’t be necessary.  As most of us suspected, the marriage that should have never happened is over.  One of the best lines of the episode is the slight dig that the writers (Sarah/Jesse?) took at the ridiculous story of April marrying Matthew.  “We kept trying to tell ourselves that our whole winding road was God’s plan to bring us back together.  But he was still so angry and hurt.  I mean, I left him at the altar and his wife died.  You know, you don’t just stop feeling hurt ‘cause it’s a better story if God brought us together in our pain.”  Enough said. And as much as we are not sad to see Matthew go, April is hurting, and Jackson recognizes that.  He takes her hand in a small gesture of comfort because he never wants to see her in pain.  (Thank you, Jesse, for improvising that.)  He gave her a reason to smile again.  Their family has a fresh start ahead in Boston.
The episode closes with Harriet calling out for “Mommy and Daddy” as Jackson pulls April into a hug before leaving to prepare for their move, and April folds perfectly into his arms where she is supposed to be.  Fingers crossed for new horizons.  Maybe they finally did get their timing right.

Lots of people thought japril apperared too platonic in the episode but personally i felt it made sense character and story wise i mean april has been married for about three years and i think jackson has tried really hard to accept that fact and move on plus she's probably going through a divorce rn they've both had to bury their feelings especially for the sake of their daughter and i think that was necessary to be able to successfully co-parent so imo it wouldn't have made sense for them to show any attraction towards each other at that point now dont get me wrong i dont think those feelings are gone they just need some time to come back to the surface (i give them 3 months tops😂) so, as a first step, the fact that we were shown how well they work together, that they're still each other's person, that they still know each other better than anyone else, that there's definitely still love there plus the hug is enough for me also i still dont think april's agreement after one (1) night of taking care of their daughter together is coincidental i think she felt that that's the way things are supposed to be and the fact that she agreed so quickly felt exactly them bc when it comes to each other they've always gone with their gut dont know if that's the wisest choice obviously but when you know you know🤷‍♀️ now ideally i'd love a spin-off (that's a whole other post btw) but i could settle for a time-jump in the farewell episode where the three of them are a happy family living their best lives in Boston both personally and professionally it's the happy ending all of us deserve

Here's a little Christmas japril drabble✨ Wishing all of you a happy Christmas and a wonderful holiday season! x
___
Jackson is bouncing up and down.
Jackson doesn't bounce. He paces, and he strides, but Averys don't bounce. Well, Harriet does, but she's 6, and a Kepner-Avery, and from his experience, Kepners definitely bounce up and down.
Coming down the stairs and into the living-room after getting Harriet to bed, April soon discovers the reason for the bouncing. The space around their Christmas tree is completely filled with gifts. Lots of gifts. Waaay too many gifts for a household of three. And she was never the best at maths – biology was her star subject in high-school –, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the ratio of gifts to persons is heavily imbalanced.
"You didn't."
"Didn't what?"
He can act coy all he wants, his smile betrays him.
"This is way too much. She's six! She doesn't need that many things!"
"Okay, first of all, some of these are from my mom. Have you tried telling my mom that she can't spoil her grandchild? If so, how are you still alive?"
"Right, so your mom bought... okay, I stopped counting after twelve boxes. Are you trying to bribe Hattie because she's mad at you for not taking her to Seattle to see Catherine last month?"
"No?"
He observes her as she scans the living-room, brows furrowed, muttering under her breath, knowing she's not really mad but loving that she plays the part.
And it's not like he can fault her for being disconcerted, because just as Jackson Avery doesn't bounce up and down, he also usually doesn't really do Christmas. He'll buy presents, and dress up, and celebrate, but that's usually the extent of his contribution to the holiday season. But this year, he's gone all in and has insisted they do everything. So in the past weeks, they've taken a picture dressed in Christmas pajamas (and he would never admit it, but these things are quite comfortable), they've gone to the Christmas fair down the bloc so Harriet could see Santa, they've been to winter festivals and Christmas markets and even the Fox foundation Christmas party.
Of course, they'd done some of it last year together. But last year, it had been Jackson Avery and April Kepner, separate entities, who had taken Hattie to these activities, and it had left him wanting more than that. Wanting the whole damn thing.
This year, they've been doing these things as the Kepner-Averys, family of three, and he's so grateful he had to do something. He doesn't even care he went overboard.
"She doesn't need that many things! She's going to grow up to be entitled and spoiled and expecting–"
He takes April in his arms, and the way she nestles against his chest tells him everything. That she doesn't believe a word she's saying because she knows what the presents mean. How happy he feels to have his family back. To be able to be woken up by Hattie at dawn so she can open her presents with both of her parents watching. She knows, because she shares the same sentiment.
"I guess I should be glad you didn't buy her a pony like she wanted."
"Well..."
Her glare is so April he can't help laughing.
"No pony, I swear. Didn't fit under the tree anyway."
"You know, you going all out for Christmas like this... You're becoming more and more lik–"
"Don't say I'm like my mom."
They stay embraced for a while, lightly swaying to imaginary music, and he wants to bottle up this moment, this simple, routine, absolutely wonderful moment.
"This is nice, but this is still too much."
"If you think so, then you're really going to hate me when you see how many of these are for you."
"Jackson!!"
Later that night, Harriet joins them in bed, snuggling between them. She explains she's way too excited to sleep, and as he tightens his grasp around his two girls, his grin is so wide his jaw almost hurts.

Right?! Like okay, he may not have actually said it to April and she may not be aware of it after everything, but dude straight up all but admitted twice that he still loves April. He said it to Maggie, he said so much. Like it just spilled out. And, he said things to Richard. He knows. He does. He just didn't say it, to her. I like that it appears they have a long road back and they can ease into being happy, and safe with the other. Let's say April isn't getting married again anytime soon.
Exactly anon! Like, I saw that some people are a little disappointed that the ultimate endgame will be taking place off screen and that we’ll just have to imagine it, but this was honestly the very best outcome I could have hoped for. I thought there was a chance Jesse would leave the last few years so I’ve been prepared for him to be written out for a while, the fact that they gave us a japril set-up along with his exit is beyond perfect and I will not be looking that gift horse in the mouth.
Honestly, I don’t think this episode would have worked if japril had gone ahead and gotten back together (unless they were doing the ep in the same speed style run as japril the movie with past interactions we didn’t know about being shown). Rather, this episode was all about reopening the door to the possibility of japril. April’s marriage to Matthew never made sense and was a horrible send off to that character but it was still a significant relationship in her life and she can’t be expected to just get over its failure. Additionally, neither her or Jackson want to risk their friendship and successful co-parenting of Harriet. It took them a long time to get to such a healthy point and they both obviously have reservations about what adding romance to the mix again could do. So there will be a necessary, and no doubt arduous, build up to their reconciliation. Something they slowly fall back into while building new lives for themselves and their family in Boston. Something that appears over more shared meals with Harriet and day trips to the park as they watch and realize what it would mean to all three of them if their family was united once more.

Japril (Jackson Avery and April Kepner) 🤍🤍
First impression: really cute. I was so happy when they finally got together and even though I say I'm not fond of the best friends-to-lovers trope, when done right it's beautiful
Impression now: japril endgame in boston! it better get confirmed later this season or else istg.
Favorite moment: do not hate me for this, but i rewatch the scene in 9x24 where april is so overcome with emotion about possibly losing jackson that she punches him a few times, that scene just makes me feel so many things and honestly, it showed how distraught april was and that she was always going to love jackson. i think he remembered that moment a lot when he was watching her get engaged/preparing to marry Matthew, too
Idea for a story: still classified lol. i swear i'll share the story one day soon, hopefully by January of 2022
Unpopular opinion: japril separating after the death of their son is actually very common for couples and I think it made them stronger as co-parents to Harriet.
Favorite relationship: other than the obvious, i like japril's dynamic with the rest of MAJAC
Favorite headcanon: japril celebrates samuel's birthday every year and harriet draws samuel in all her "family pics"

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 17X14
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
So, if you read my review from the previous episode you know I turned out to be mostly wrong about this one. That being said, I really enjoyed the episode. I was never a ride or die japril shipper so I don't think this episode was as emotional for me as it was for other fans, but I enjoyed it. It was nice to see Jackson and April back on screen together! They always had great chemistry and I really enjoyed their scenes. And how cute was Harriet in this episode? She was SO adorable! I like that Jackson went to go visit his father to try and figure out what his Mom was talking about and I'm glad he got some closure there. That was nice to see. The scene where Robert tells Jackson why he left was super emotional and the acting was sublime!
I'm glad that Robert is giving lunches to people who need them in the community and is helping in his own way. It doesn't make up for what he did, but it's nice to know that he's making a go of the life he has with the diner and his coffee blend. It did bug me a bit that they played with time so much because it was difficult for me to figure out in the beginning what order the events went in which kind of took me out of the episode a little bit.
My biggest pet peeve with this episode was the whole thing with the meat slicer. Let me explain. It would have taken Robert a few minutes maximum to teach Jackson how to use it, but instead Jackson acts like the entitled pretty boy that he is and says he can operate it no problem. It's because of attitudes like this that people get hurt in workplace accidents because they assume that because it looks easy that it is. Anyone CAN operate a meat slicer, but you shouldn't without proper training.
Attitudes like that perpetuate the idea that people who work in hospitality, retail, construction, and other such fields are "simple" and that anyone can do it. It devalues the important work that so many people do, and it often results in untrained people getting hurt. So yeah as someone whose worked in both hospitality and retail and whose family works in construction I could have done without the harmful stereotype that we are all simpletons and Jackson's BS elitist attitude and him cutting himself on the meat slicer. Jackson's clearly never worked a day in his life outside of being a doctor and it shows.
I too was surprised when April agreed so suddenly to go with Jackson to Boston. I didn't think it was fair for her to agree without talking to Matthew first, but then she revealed that they split up. Going into this episode I really thought they were faking us out because April, a deeply religious woman, leaving her husband and step-daughter for Jackson didn't make any sense to me. But finding out that April and Matthew split up changes that. At first, I thought that would be impossible because getting a divorce in the early months of the pandemic was pretty difficult but the fact that they've separated but not officially divorced makes more sense.
Jackson says in the first half of the season that Matthew is spending more time with Harriet than he or April are because they've both been taking so many COVID shifts which at the time came across as them being a happy family. But taken in context with what April says in this episode it makes it sound like Matthew was spending time with Harriet because Jackson and April were working all the time and that put strain on their marriage. What Jackson is talking about would have happened in March or early April and this episode takes place sometime in June. Sadly, a lot of couples have split up during the pandemic in the way that April describes so while sad it was realistic.
While it would obviously be sad and confusing for the kids April makes it clear that Matthew and Ruby have the support of his sister and mother and her and Harriet have Jackson. I’m sad that April and Matthew’s relationship didn’t work out. I really liked them together. I do think it was nice though that they had Jackson ride off into the sunset with April and Harriet having left the door open for reconciliation the way they did with Arizona and Callie when Arizona moved to New York with Sofia.
Also let’s talk about the big elephant in the room. I get that this is Jackson's send off, but I still don't understand why Jackson couldn't run the Foundation from Seattle. That's what Catherine has been doing on and off for the last few years. Tom and Richard the previous and current Chief Medical Officers of the Catherine Fox Foundation are both based in Seattle. Why is moving to Boston necessary? It's their foundation can't they just move the Headquarters? Also were in a pandemic wouldn’t Jackson be working remotely anyway? Why do they have to move to Boston? What’s in Boston that they need so badly?
That being said, I'm glad that Jackson is getting a proper send off and will have time to say goodbye to everybody and have some heart to hearts and do it properly. We don't get that with every character. What in the heckity heck is Jo going to do next season? She doesn't have anyone to sleep with or date and she's leaving general surgery for OBGYN. That doesn't leave a whole lot of story for her. What is she going to do? Talk to Levi about his relationship problems and deliver babies? You could make a reoccurring character out of that sure but not a main character which is what Jo is currently billed as.
I'd like to see Jo adopt Luna and I think that could be really interesting so if they go that route, I could get on board but if not, I don't know what she's going to do. To be honest Jo isn't my favourite character, but I still feel bad for her. She has serious abandonment issues and every time she heals someone else leaves her! Jo's mother left her at a fire station as a baby. She wanted nothing to do with her as an adult. She did the work to get all whole and healed and was finally ready to have kids with Alex when finds out about the twins and leaves her for Izzie.
Jo does the work to get better and work on her issues and begins a friends with benefits relationship with Jackson only for him to disappear to the woods after Jo called him out on it at the beginning of their relationship and has now decided to move to Boston with April and Harriet to head up the Foundation. Girl can't win. Also does April know that Jackson has been sleeping with Jo? I mean she didn’t tell him that her and Matthew separated so I guess she can’t be too mad at him, but still. Awkward.
I think Jackson loves camping more than anyone else ever loves camping. His departure means he won't be attending Maggie's wedding. I have to admit I was looking forward to the awkwardness. I’m curious to see what Catherine is going to do now. Will she retire? Will she go back to being an attending surgeon full time? Does this mean they are going to have to find someone new to head up Plastics? Are they going to introduce a new character for Season 18?
I feel like finding a replacement for Jackson could go either way. Because I didn't think I would like Hayes when he took over Peds but now I love him and he's one of my favourite characters! I still miss Alex, but Hayes has been a great addition. I root for him and Meredith so hard and he was one of my favourite parts of Season 16.
Also, poor Bailey! This woman is just trying to keep the hospital afloat and she's losing surgeons and doctors left, right, and centre. Alex moved to Kansas. DeLuca died. Jackson is moving to Boston. Jo is switching specialties. Meredith's out with COVID! And let's not forget that Bailey lost her Mom to COVID not that long after she suffered a miscarriage after having a heart attack way too young and she deals with OCD which the pandemic is doing nothing to help! This poor woman!
Onto next week’s promo, I'm glad that they are doing a proper send off with Jackson. I'm also super excited that Meredith is up and talking and moving around! I've missed her! Although I am mad we have to wait another two weeks!!! I mean come on! We waited two whole months for the show to come back and then we waited for two weeks between episodes 13 and 14 and now we have to wait another two weeks for episode 15. Come on! Meredith and Hayes better rise as a couple when the show returns because if they don’t I will be so disappointed.
Until next time!

What if Jackson is going to see April because he is trying to move but doesn’t want to leave Harriet. Like maybe he wants to take over the foundation or something. And April is all for moving her family to support Jackson’s dreams so she brings it up to Matthew. Then, he freaks out at her for always putting Jackson before him and that is what breaks them up. ( just saying there is NO WAY Matthew doesn’t have some open wounds from their first wedding and Jackson). So April moves anyway to be with Jackson since Mathew isn’t keeping her in Seattle anymore. Then, they can just do an entire spinoff with the two of them and Harriet starting their new lives somewhere. And obviously they would get back together because they are each other’s person!
Obviously I know the odds of something like this being even remotely close to the cannon storyline is extremely unlikely. Just saying it’s a good idea and I would be so flippin happy if we got a Japril spin off. I feel like they are trying to find a way to end the show without actually ending it.
