If Gideon could pick ideal partners for his siblings, who would he choose?

‘Ideally’ — Gideon would want partners for his siblings that are: 

Loving

Loyal

Ethical

... Among many other traits that he thinks his siblings deserve to be the recipients of, but that mostly fall under the same umbrella of the above three virtues. It’s difficult to answer this question with respect to taken characters on the dash, because most of them are mobsters, and while he could be convinced of such a relationship for his siblings given enough time, it’s not really what he wants for them as an ideal. 

... Even if I do bc drama

Adri: For example, it meant a lot to him that Aviv, a virtual stranger to him, took care of Adri at a time where his family was in a lot of danger, even though Gideon would strongly prefer she found a non-mobster. I think he wants a ‘Provider’ type especially for Adri because she tends to fend for herself and he wants her to be able to lean on someone else for a change. Not because she needs to — but to learn that it’s ok to let others do the caring, and to feel safe enough to allow that. Still, Aviv fulfilled some of the ‘protector’ criteria he’d want a prospective partner to have in relation to his siblings, so that his own stress about their wellbeing is lowered accordingly. So even though it wouldn’t be an ‘ideal’ partner, Aviv’s selflessness and care would’ve probably won over his support in the long-run.

Yvonne: Same could be said for Theo, who is the only one of Yvonne’s partners that he’s ever really known. Despite some degree of personality clash, in some AU where Theo and Yvonne stayed together + Theo chose to remain present in his daughter’s life, Gideon’s good opinion would’ve likely been earned in the long-run, bc he would’ve fulfilled the ‘loyalty’ criteria for Yvonne. Of course, that’d be canceled out if Theo either didn’t care about the rest of Yvonne’s family dying or actively sought to ensure it... So long as that was true, he obviously wouldn’t be supportive, because any such relationship would come at the expense of other loved ones. Equally, I think for Yvonne, because she is the least mob-affiliated among his siblings, it's especially important to Gid that she end up with someone who’s similarly outside that life of crime. He really respects her for making this choice and wants it to be permanent. Since he hasn’t met another person on the dash who fulfills this criteria and/or has any relationship currently to Yvonne (that he knows of), I think he’d feel her ideal partner is still waiting in the wings.

Lara: What he wants for Lara above all, is for her to ditch the family legacy and to heal as a person. It might be completely out of touch, but I don’t think Gideon will ever give up hope for her. Towards that end, athough he sees those three virtues in Henry, I think he hesitates to want them together because he doesn’t think Henry has the gumption or the interest to pull Lara out of the mob. This has been alluded to previously in a thread between them on the dash, so I won’t go into further detail. Suffice to say, because of that, he’d prob hedge his bets in favour of Jasper, currently, because (to my v. limited knowledge) he also cares about Lara, but isn’t in the mob. On ane emo note, I think he really rooted for Amir when the two were together bc he fulfilled a lot his criteria. But after the relationship broke down and (in his biased opinion) Amir broke Lara’s heart, he lost some of his taste for the man, and (unfairly) for his next girlfriend-turned-fiancée too.

Damon: In some ways, he considers Damon to be the luckiest among his siblings, because he’s landed a woman who fulfills all three criteria. Nora’s affectionate, protective of Damon, loyal to her loved ones, and finally, she doesn’t have any suspect ties to the mob. Given he wants the best for his sibs, realistically, Gideon would be a huge supporter of Nora as a romantic partner for his brother. Before Nora, his biggest frustration with Damon was the serial cheating, and what he wanted most was for Damon to find the sort of person who would challenge him into exploring a more ‘mature’, selfless love vs flings and hookups. He’s always felt Damon and the rest of his siblings have so much love to give in their own right — and that it’s just a matter of them finding the right person to bring those higher qualities out and lead to healthy, stable romances that have longevity.

The people who could be trusted to know, knew. Those who couldn’t, didn’t. 

When she’d first regained consciousness less than a day after the initial attack—a credit to her utterly spiteful will to go out on her own terms, and nobody else’s, it seemed—recalling the events that’d landed her there had been a terrifying shock to the system. It was the fourth time she’d been on death’s door. The third fucking time they’d picked bullets out of a woman who refused to do anything but survive. Only this time, despite the fact she’d made it out relatively unscathed, she’d lost someone.

As it turned out, being confined to a room that’d delivered her right into the pits of stir-crazy barely a week in, left plenty of time to revisit that feeling: hearing a man she’d only ever appreciated hitting the floor as a corpse instead of a protector. 

Nothing helped. There was no company. No comfort. No reprieve from her mind.

Maybe she didn’t deserve it. 

A few had gotten the chance to visit; mostly those who could make their way to Launceston on business without it appearing suspicious. If Lara had believed in a god, she’d have thanked her for letting Damon be one of them. Not being able to see her family through any means but uncomfortable video calls was beginning to drain an already perilously empty tank. But her brother was there again, and she had never appreciated his company more than in that moment. Physically, she was fine now; that much was obvious as she jumped off the bed to greet him as he subtly slipped into the very private, very secure hospital room. 

“Please tell me you brought the bottle of vodka. The fun nurse stopped sneaking it in because apparently I have a bad attitude. I don’t know why she’d say that?”

'The Oppenheimer movie has inevitably ignited interest in one of the most contentious episodes of modern history - the birth of a nuclear weapon which unleashed unprecedented destruction.

While the film focuses on the eponymous American physicist spearheading Allied efforts to make the atomic bomb, the team also involved British Nobel Prize winner James Chadwick.

Yet little is known about Chadwick when compared to his peers, whose names read like a who's who of school science lessons.

The shy but steely scientist is credited with discovering the neutron, before going on to lead the British contingent in the Manhattan Project, that was set up to build the atomic bomb.

As World War Two drew to a close, American bombers would drop the devices over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, instantaneously killing more than 100,000 people.

During their development, Chadwick was the only non-American with access to all of the group's research and production plants, according to experts.

He famously admitted his "only remedy" on realising the inevitability of the nuclear bomb was to take sleeping pills, which he ended up doing every night for more than 28 years.

Before his tenure at Los Alamos, Chadwick's career had developed in Manchester, often described as the birthplace of nuclear physics.

The city had become a hub of science and engineering from the onset of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-18th Century.

But Chadwick's origins 20 miles away never indicated what he would later achieve.

"He was not from any kind of wealthy background," says Dr James Sumner, a historian of technology at the University of Manchester.

"He was certainly not from a traditional academic background."

Born in the Cheshire village of Bollington in 1891, Chadwick himself described his family as poor, with his father failing to set up a business in Manchester.

During an interview later in life, he admitted losing contact with a younger brother, adding: "I'm afraid I don't have a great family feeling."

He "didn't take school very seriously" and recalled playing truant one day with his friend - the headmaster's son - "to go bird-nesting".

"I have quite a vivid memory of being caned very severely for it."

Despite this less than promising start, he later moved to a school in Manchester where he benefited from "extremely good" teaching and gained a university scholarship.

"Manchester then, as now, is a very progressive city indeed," Chadwick recalled, saying he wanted to study mathematics with "no intention whatever of reading physics".

But a mix-up, which involved sitting on the wrong interview bench and being "too shy" to ask for a subject change, inadvertently led to a successful career in physics.

He studied under Prof Ernest Rutherford, the Nobel Prize-winning New Zealander whose model of the atom is still used in schools worldwide.

"You don't let undergraduate students near the monumental, partly because the professors want all the relevant glory for themselves," says Dr Sumner.

"At that time, there were just far fewer physicists and there was more glory to go around, so people like Chadwick could make a difference very early on."

Manchester had been steadily attracting scientific prestige after John Dalton pioneered studies in atomic theory and colour blindness, while fellow student James Joule became a household name after his work in energy conservation.

"Once you've got a big name there, everyone else goes in and makes more discoveries," says Dr William Bodel, who researches nuclear technology at the university in Manchester.

Others to pass through the university included J.J. Thomson - who is credited with discovering the electron - quantum physicist Neils Bohr and Hans Geiger, co-inventor of the radiation counter.

"Chadwick was one of several who did forefront cutting edge research," says Dr Sumner.

"He is publishing forefront discoveries in the hot new science of atomic physics and that's really when his career took off."

He met Albert Einstein on occasions at a Berlin laboratory, where Chadwick was undertaking research with Geiger.

But after World War One broke out, he was imprisoned at a camp when all Englishmen were interned. He still managed to pursue his scientific interests, making a magnet as the German officers - whom he described as "extremely lenient" - turned a blind eye.

On returning to Manchester much weakened and poorer after the war, he was offered work by Rutherford and the pair soon took up opportunities at the University of Cambridge.

His life underwent another change in 1925, when he married Aileen Stewart-Brown in Liverpool and two years later, the couple had twin daughters.

As the science of physics continued to develop, Chadwick proved the existence of the neutron in the early 1930s after some speculative - or "quite silly" as he called it - experiments, following years of believing it was a main constituent of the nucleus.

"When I did the experiments, as I did off and on, they were done at odd moments and sometimes when nobody was about," he said.

Yet Dr Bodel describes the discovery as "fundamental enough to teach to school children".

"Before him, it was known there was an extra particle, but it was difficult to detect."

Chadwick said "it hadn't crossed my mind" that the breakthrough would earn him the 1935 Nobel Prize for Physics but, in his typically succinct way, he said he was "naturally, extremely pleased".

The prize came at a parting of the ways with his mentor Rutherford, as they differed about new equipment to advance their research.

Chadwick took up the offer as chair of physics at the University of Liverpool, saying he also wanted "more contact with other people with different interests".

Following the outbreak of another world war, his expertise saw him join a British working group to study the possibility of developing a nuclear weapon.

A destructive legacy

In 1943, Chadwick travelled as head of the British mission to Los Alamos in the US, where scientists were developing the first atomic bomb.

But he felt "much more needed in Washington to keep in touch with our people there and to see what was happening in different places".

He worked closely with project chief Lt General Leslie Groves, played in the film by Matt Damon, and spoke rarely about laboratory director Oppenheimer or "Oppie" as he called him.

However, there were concerns "other countries would take up the business", according to Chadwick.

"I was quite sure, you see, that the Russians could not be far behind in knowing about the project."

Chadwick believed British participation was "helpful", even though "perhaps we had not many contributions to make".

The explosions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed more than 100,000 people, with more dying from the impact by the end of 1945.

"It completely changed the way we operate," says Dr Bodel. "The world was not the same after the Hiroshima bomb. We can't underestimate their contribution."

Despite Chadwick's discomfort at the devastating impact, he went on to lobby for the UK to have its own nuclear arsenal after the war.

"I don't have any doubts that the bomb had to be used. And I don't feel any guilt in having taken part in producing it. Why should I? Far worse things happened than that — perhaps not many," he said.'

Location: The Berkeley Estate, Guildford. (ignore the Christmas theme, but just so you can get an idea of the place they're spending the night.) Hosts: Nora Berkeley. Date: Friday 22nd March, 2024. (roleplaying will start now.) Dress Code: Formal. Dress to impress. Short dresses are now fine.

EVENT SUMMARY:

And now it's time for the after party. If you weren't smart enough to send your attire ahead of time, better make sure you grab it before the fleet of cars leaves without you. You've got forty five minutes before anybody who's anybody is whisked away from Central London, and off to the expansive Berkeley Estate nestled in the ever idyllic Guildford. Don't worry, nobody needs to worry about disturbing the neighbours. The 120+ rooms means that everybody is more than welcome to stay the night. Some might have to share rooms, or shack up on an antique sofa worth more than their existence, but that's part of the fun...no? There will be plenty of food on offer upon arrival to line stomachs before the real party begins, and breakfast will be provided to all those who survive the night. There will be several bars scattered across the property, including the conservatory and pool room. Said pool will be open and welcoming visitors, so if you feel like taking a dip? Get wild... (Not that any of you need a excuse to take your clothes off, obviously.) Each of the formal dining rooms will be transformed into mini-night clubs, all hosting its own genre specific DJ, as well as a handful of tables for bottle service. Just because one room doesn't suit you, doesn't mean another won't. Find your vibe. If you prefer to take things at a slower pace, the impressive wine cellar will offer some respite; a string quartet, a huge selection of cigars to choose from, and a calmer atmosphere in which to mull over the night's events. The conservatory will also be spared the blaring music, and instead play host to a pop-up bar and casino courtesy of Damon Rutherford and The Empire Hotel.

ATTENDANCE & IMPORTANT NOTES:

Everyone can attend this event, regardless of their affiliation or whether they attended the ceremony itself. That said, if you feel you character wouldn’t participate, then there’s no pressure to. Take note that there will canonically be a lot of important members of London’s social scene present, so the party will be pretty jam-packed with the city’s self-proclaimed finest and most famous. This will be considered a monumental social event this year, so people will be looking to go wild and make the most of it. TWI will be paying attention. It is not a private event.

“You’re lurking.”

“I’m not lurking, I’m ogling.” Even from the staircase Yvonne could see Félix rolling his eyes at her without looking away from his tablet. She finished her descent and crossed the room to sit on the arm of the chair beside him. Félix looked up from his tablet to pull her down into a soft kiss and Yvonne could see the news app pulled up, just as she expected. “You know, your reading glasses work a lot better if you actually wear them,” she chided as she poked the glasses sitting on top of his head.

“I can see just fine,” he grumbled.

“If you say so.” Yvonne kissed him one more time and moved to sit beside him on the couch, tucking her legs under her as she leaned her head against his shoulder and looked at the story on the tablet.

“Why don’t you ever talk about your family?” The question broke the easy silence hanging between them and it took Yvonne a moment to process it. She looked at her boyfriend, a frown spreading across her lips.

“That came out of nowhere.”

Félix set his tablet to the side and turned to focus his attention solely on Yvonne. “My mamí just told you every story about my childhood over dinner, and I know almost nothing about yours.”

Félix had a point. He’d met Adriana (and Lara, as she’d learned later) at the Halloween party and she’d told him the bare bones facts about the family, but any other time her childhood came up, Yvonne found a convenient excuse or distraction to change the subject. And meeting the Rodriguez family only solidified her commitment to running away from her own. There was no resentment, hostility, passive aggressiveness. It was everything she wished for as a child.

“It’s not a fun story. Especially compared to your mother’s stories about your escapades.”

Her boyfriend didn’t say a word, but continued fixing her with what Yvonne deemed his “politician stare”. She still didn’t know how he could slip past all of her defenses with a pointed look, but in this moment, she didn’t appreciate it. Yvonne sighed and sank even further into the couch.

“So, you know that there’s a gap between my siblings and I. And they’re really my half siblings, even though they’re adopted…” A finger under her chin tilted it up  so that she was staring directly into Félix’s eyes.

“Breathe. And just start from the beginning, princesa.” He leaned in and pressed a tender kiss to her lips and stroked her cheek with his thumb.

“Right. Dad was married before he met Mom. Her name was Cerys and I’m pretty sure she was the love of his life. They adopted my older siblings, Damon and Gideon together and then Lara. Then Cerys got sick. And after she died Dad moved them to Porto Velho. That’s where he met Mom.” God, she wanted a drink to get through this. Félix’s thumb hadn’t stopped, still holding her so that she couldn’t look away or hide.

“I was born less than a year after they married. People don’t think twice about gossiping in front of kids, especially when they’re already expected to be seen and not heard. It didn’t take long to figure out that most people thought I was just Mom’s ticket to staying connected to the Rutherford family. Especially with how fast they got married.” Once upon a time, she truly believed that thought herself.

“That just confirmed to me that I was an outsider in my own family. I mean, Gideon and Damon always had each other to cling to, and Adriana’s been Lara’s ride or die for as long as they’ve known each other.”

“And who did you have?”

Yvonne blinked slowly, her fingers tightening into a fist. “I had myself.”

“That sounds incredibly lonely.”

“It was. I was still young when my brothers moved out of the house. Damon came back to Porto, but Gideon never did. And everything always seemed to revolve around Lara. Dad never hid that she was his favorite, the boys would hang the moon for her. Even my mom spent her time trying to win her over to be accepted fully into the family.” And most days it felt like not much changed. “I saw green every time she was even mentioned. All I ever wanted was to get a fraction of the love she did and to outshine her for even a moment.” Félix opened his mouth to respond but Yvonne held her hand up to pause him. “I know you grew up in a family that expresses love normally and always has enough to go around, but that’s not the Rutherford family. Love is a limiting resource and they finished dividing up the family share when Lara was adopted. There wasn’t any left when I was born and I committed the cardinal sin of being Constance, not Cerys Rutherford’s daughter.”

She squeezed her eyes shut, not wanting to see Felix’s reaction to her admission. Days like today reinforced just how different their pasts were. Yvonne grew up with every material luxury, but none of the warmth and love she still craved to this day. Félix grew up in Brixton, the son of Cuban immigrants and still gave them money every month. And yet, his family opened their table and their arms up to Yvonne and Maddie without hesitation.

Soft lips pressed against hers and she heard a whispered “Look at me.” Yvonne opened her eyes and saw Félix staring at her with a mix of affection and what she chose to believe was love. “Thank you. None of that was your fault, you know that right?”

“I’m slowly learning that. But, do you really want to talk about my tragic backstory all night, or do you want to take advantage of the fact that Maddie is upstairs, fast asleep?” She closed the gap between them once again, this kiss decidedly unchaste.

His trademark smirk spread across his lips and Yvonne rolled her eyes as he pushed her back onto the couch and climbed over her. “It would be a shame to waste that opportunity.”

The man hadn’t stepped foot on this thing in years. Cue the memories of when he and Damon hadn’t a care in the world, taking it out down to the French Riviera for weeks that neither of them could recall; partly because of the alcohol, partly because some things were best left...forgotten. Amir had gotten a laugh out of the trip down memory lane, at least. Things were different now, admittedly too much to ever hope to repair, but it was a time in his life he would treasure always.

That didn’t stop him putting on a very serious face for her, though: 

“So, I adore you, and I am fully here in support of your hosting duties tonight, but this yacht is giving me trauma flashbacks, so please know it’s a sacrifice.”

❖ Timeline ❖

April 16th 1984 — Born to Natan & Mikaela Weiss, of Israeli and Irish origin, respectively. Both parents are doctors, living in Yeovil (Somerset) UK, and raise their son with warmth and stability in a happy home.

1990 — Parents die in a car crash when he’s 6 years old. Grief-stricken and unable to cope, his aunt abandons him in a London orphanage where he meets wee lil Damon (@damon-rutherford​), who’s only 4. Takes him under his wing, and a few months later they get adopted by Andrew and Cerys Rutherford. 

 1994 — Cerys falls ill and dies, the boys ( aged 10 & 8) are broken-hearted. Lara (@lararutherford​), who’d been adopted before that, is still too baby to remember much of it. Andrew uproots the family (+ Adriana @amaroadriana who’s basically a foster sister at this point + her mother, who continues on as the family’s nanny) to Porto Velho in America. Connie (@constance-rutherford) enters the picture shortly (contentiously so) thereafter, and Yvonne (@yvonne-rutherford) is born. 

 1997/8 — Aged 13/14, discovers the truth about Andrew’s line of work. Fractures his relationship with his father and Johnathan (@johnathan-parsons​), who was something of an uncle figure to him. Partially motivated by this event, partially by his dislike of PV, he sets his sights on Med School in Oxford, to get as far away from his father, and follow in the footsteps of his biological parents before him. 

2002 — Graduates highschool at 18, accepted into Oxford University’s School of Medicine, moves back to England. 

2002-2008 — Med school days, these years give rise to Team Posh, giving rise to his long-standing friendships with people like Spencer @spencerberkeley​, Harrison (☠️), and Cassandra @cassandra-acton​​, among others. Also meets his first steady girlfriend, before moving on to Diana (@diana-sehgal), and then Mila (@milaxkorshunova) during these years no more dates bc fuck that i’m confused.

2009 — Some time after graduating med school, he (aged 25) heads to the US to start his long-ass surgical residency. This is followed by an amicable, mutual decision to split with then-girlfriend, Mila, due to the pressures of being long-distance, and some meddling by her v. Russian father.

2011 — On one of many sporadic visits back to the UK, Damon introduces him to publicly adored British actress Katherine Mayfair, and a whirlwind romance ensues, devotedly followed by the press.

2014 — Marries Katherine (aged 30), partway through residency, prompting a transfer back to England to complete his surgical training in London. Despite indulging a hidden drug habit, Katherine promises to stay clean.

2017 — After three years’ worth of a struggling marriage and multiple lies, the dam finally breaks when he finds out that Katherine’s still using drugs while pregnant with their child. This is the same year as he completes his surgical residency and becomes a fully licensed neurosurgeon/consultant (aged 33).

2018 — As soon as his son is born (June 6), Gideon (aged 34) files for divorce. Katherine punishes him in the worst way possible for this decision, and paints him as a cheating scumbag to the media to cover up her own infidelities and continued drug use. This poisons the public’s opinion against him and a bitter custody battle ensues. Easily the worst year of his life, the results of which have lingered through the ensuing years.

Some time in between idk bear w me ok — Befriends his apartment neighbour, Elene Dadiani. The lines blur between friendship and something more, but before it can flourish she’s gunned down outside the apartment one horrible night. The event scars him and puts him off the prospect of romance for a few more years. Also there are many attacks on his family in between and mob life is pervasive as shit and the Ruthas are constant drama rip, but y’all know this already

2024 (Present day) — Gid is 39 going on 40, and still goin’ thru it. Felix is 5 going on 6, and goin’ thru it somewhat less. He is currently in a bid to launch another appeal against his ex for full custody of their child.

Especially when the drinks were free and she had no problem rinsing Damon Rutherford for all he was worth. The politician had found herself in the pool, because why the fuck not? Silas was roaming around the place shirtless somewhere all so she could take a dip without ruining a dress that was little more than underwear, anyway. The man was a certifiable keeper, and she loved him with her entire fucking soul.

"Open up," she urged, lifting the freshly opened bottle of champagne ready to pour directly into her company's mouth. They'd put a couple of tables in the shallow end of the pool which mean the party wasn't resigned to dipping one's feet, and what better place to wash away the scum of Rutherford money than in a Berkeley pool? Cassie waded forward to get closer. "It's only the best stuff, I promise."
