Once in awhile, you can get one over on The Man. Finally, after all these years of toiling under his rule, doing his dirty work, begging for his praise, he has well and truly fucked up. And, it turns out, your entire life has been building up to the moment that you can milk him for all he's worth.

Have you ever seen a Dodge Caliber? They're getting sort of uncommon now, but when they were new, they were pretty hateful cars. Cheap, buzzy, surprisingly uneconomical, steering that felt like telling a funeral home operator how to sign a birthday card over the phone by long distance. And they fell apart all the time. Most cars get repaired, but these things got gleefully shovelled into the junkyard at the first chance the owners got.

Not all of them, though. This is a story about one very special Dodge Caliber. You see, my aunt needed a car. And my aunt is very nervous about owning a car. The skills of shitbox repair never made it into her genes, you see, possibly because she is not related to me by blood. So, in order to get that car, she went to the Dodge dealership, and she asked them: can you do a lifetime warranty, unlimited mileage, no questions asked, cover everything? And they said: for you, ma'am, we absolutely can charge you an obscene, eye-watering amount of money.

Once I found out about this, I was mad. And then I figured it out. You see, what my aunt did have was being insanely cheap. That's why she was a part of my degenerate family. She still is, even though my Uncle Larry exploded that one night at Arecibo. Unlimited mileage. There has never been a sweeter phrase uttered in the English language.

Now, whenever anyone we know needs to go for a long trip, we tell them: take the Caliber. Rack those miles up. Punish those stupid motherfuckers for writing such a terrible, open-ended contract. My aunt runs a taxi service consisting entirely of this vehicle, a fleet of drivers constantly rotating in and out, the thing rolling virtually 24/7. I love driving this car, because every single mile that ticks up on the odometer is more salty tears from the low-wattage pig who thought he was a big-time wheeler and dealer down at Old Time Country Dodge.

To their credit, they figured out the enormous error that they had made fairly quickly. When Aunt Hilda rolled in the thing, smoking and wheezing, for its sixth transmission replacement at eight-hundred-and-fifty-thousand kilometers, they offered to buy it from her and give her a brand new luxury SUV, just for being such a great customer. She laughed, and told them to get started overhauling the Caliber, and don't forget to take a look at the squeaking sound it started making in the back.

When things got real bad during the recession, they tried to go bankrupt, thinking that might get them out from having to maintain this economy car until the sun burns out. Ha! Death won't save you, my friend. My attorney Max picked that one up pro bono, despite hating warranty law, just for the pleasure of watching their attorney read the purchase contract. Her eyes got so big that they stuck that way. The paramedics had to use the jaws of life on her eyelids so she could blink again.

Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 230 Thoughts.

I've been skipping my weekly thoughts posts on the last few chapters, because most of the chapters is explaining fight mechanics. However, Megumi showed up again and as someone with a severe case of Megumi-itis let's talk about him, what the possible consequences for taking Unlimited Void could be and where his character might go after this fight.

1. Megumi's Soul

The slow corruption of Megumi's soul has been a running theme ever since Sukuna took his body. The first thing he did after taking that body was descend and soak into a literal bath of evil in order to subemerge Megumi's soul further. Ura-me even describes it as "Being near evil."

Immediately afterwards, Sukuna uses Megumi's body to murder his sister. Making sure to only use Ten Shadows techniques the entire fight, so Megumi will feel that he killed his sister with his own hands. Megumi is someone helpless to watch as he experiences the same thing Sukuna does to Yuji in shibuya, taking his own body from him, using his hands to kill others, and leaving Yuji with the guilt of being a murderer because he was too weak to fight back.

Tsumiki is a character who when she is first mentioned in the manga, drawn with white lilies, the symbol of purity. She is also, in Megumi's eyes a character without flaws, who's only bad trait is worrying about him too much, his example of a good person he wants to save the only person besides that sharing that category being Yuji. (I stole this from @theanimepsychologist)

She's not just associated with purity through those flowers, she's a symbol of purity TO MEGUMI. She is the model example of a good person, Megumi even says his entire goal in life is to make the world more fair so good people such as his sister shouldn't have to suffer.

When Sukuna talks about his desire to destroy Tsumiki, those same white lilies are in the background ripped apart. Not only that, her body is shown to be naked in a compromising position. Gege's not the most subtle person in the world, so it's pretty clear symbolism when a man talks about how he wants to violently destroy a woman and she's drawn naked like this, like I don't think Sukuna intended that but symbolically it's the destruction of her purity.

Megumi doesn't see himself as good, he sees Tsumiki as a good person he wants to protect, and also basically the only family member / support in his life, and Sukuna rips her apart right in front of Megumi's eyes. Megumi's been exposed to evil, and had his closest loved one slaughtered. Not only that, his entire reason for being a sorcerer in the first place. Not to give himself a happy life or because he wanted to do it, but because if he didn't do it Tsumiki had no chance at being happy in the Zen'in Household.

It's not just Tsumiki that's crushed, it's his entire reason for living so far, it's the implied promise of protection that Gojo gave him that if he chose to follow him that Tsumiki would have a better life.

Even if Gojo manages to save Megumi from Sukuna's possession, mentally he's been pushed past the point of no return there's no way he's coming out of this alright.

That is, if Gojo is even making that much of an effort to save him.

Now, it may turn out that Gojo had a method planned of getting Megumi back from Sukuna all along. He does seem to imply he believes that if he does enough damage to Sukuna's body, the same way that Sukuna ripped Yuji's heart out and gained back control he'll force Sukuna to switch control again. But!

Even if that's his intention, I think there's some clear symbolism in how it was Megumi's "Soul" that was targeted by the Unlimited Void.

Forget Gojo's announcing to Sukuna that he has no compunctions about beating up Megumi because he looks like Toji. Forget the casual mention of crushing Megumi's entire body in the process of trying to finish the fight. Barring all of that, there's still a noticable lack of concern for how Megumi as Gojo is completely wrapped up in the fight against Sukuna. Because this is how Gojo's mind works, he is the strongest sorcerer so everything cn be solved with a battle of physical strength. Gojo is opposing Sukuna, and yet his philosophy is pretty much the same as Sukuna's.

Sukuna the person who stole Megumi's body, is fighting against Gojo the person who essentially stole Megumi's childhood, by taking him in to Jujutsu High under the guise of "Helping Him" but giving him little choice of what to do with his life. Either he becomes a sorcerer, or they give him no money and they starve, or they get sent to the Zen'in who will probably abuse Tsumiki.

There's something deeply ironic about Gojo bragging about how his students are watching him so he has to look cool, which shows the smiling faces of several of the Tokyo High kids, contrasted to how he's treated Megumi this entire fight and shown little concern for his well-being.

Megumi the person who he should really feel the most responsible for, because Gojo went out of his way to recruit him to Jujutsu High at like age five.

So, of course Gojo's strongest domain expansion attack hits Megumi instead of Sukuna, because the entire time Gojo's practically had no problem using Megumi as a punching bag, because he has to seize a more important objective which is defeating Sukuna for the safety of the world.

Now here's where the Megumi corruption arc truthers get excited. Do you think Megumi will really emerge from his possession okay after not only losing his body, bathing in evil, killing Tsumiki therefore breaking his promise of protection and Gojo's as well, and then being exposed to the unlimited void by Gojo which fills people's head with so much information it breaks their brain.

Megumi's clearly waking up after being hit with the void, but there's almost no chance of him waking up and going back to normal.

Megumi is a shadow character, much like Geto he's not only been shown on multiple occasions to repress his feelings over the entire course of the manga, (basically a long-form version of Geto's slow decline) he also on multiple ocasions as shown a more violent side.

Geto's arc even revolves around him questioning if weak people are even worth protecting, and then struggling against his inability to protect his fellow sorcerers who are continually sacrificed in protection of those weak people. Geto is overwhelmed by the weight of responsibility that sorcerers carry. Much like Megumi who has stated on multiple occasions, he doesn't want to be a hero, he doesn't feel obligated to save people. The two people he wants to save, Tsumiki and Yuji are however people he's failed to save. Riko is a clear parallel to Tsumiki. Tsumiki is even ripped away from Megumi the moment he thinks that he's saved her from the culling games, the same way that just as Geto promised that him and Gojo would be able to protect her, she's shot in the head by Toji.

If you're a Megumi corruption arc truther, than it's been a long time coming. Let's look at the characters he parallels in the manga, Maki (became a mass murderer after her sister died), Geto (also became a mass murderer when he lost faith in the idea that sorcerers are duty bound to protect the weak, which started when he failed to save Riko), Toji (also a mass murderer).

Toji is the biggest example though, because despite Gege continually pushing the idea that Maki is the second coming of Toji (we get it already) Megumi is Toji's direct foil, Megumi's poor lot in life is a result of Toji abandoning him. Toji was rejected and abandoned by his family, and went on to do the same thing with Megumi.

As Megumi has received no support from the adults in his life, there's basically nothing stopping him from continuing that cycle. Megumi looks exactly like Toji, especially when coming out of the Evil Bath of Evil. In his more violent moments he's drawn to look like Toji with several art parallels between Megumi and the Toji in hidden inventory.

Toji's also famous for doing this to Gojo.

He's the first person to defeat the limitless and manage to put a scratch on him. Everyone said that Gojo and Megumi's drawing on the animation booklet is foreshadowing of his fight with Sukuna in Megumi's body, but what if it's not...

What if when Megumi regains control of his body and Sukuna is defeated, everything does not work out like Gojo expects it will with one epic battle. What if having been brought so close to evil, Megumi is finally corrupted all the way through. After all the Unlimited specifically hit Megumi's soul. Megumi's body might be physically saved, but his soul might be lost in the process.

We've seen multiple times that the thing which holds Megumi back from acting on his more violent impulses is the image of Tsumiki, but Tsumiki's not there anymore.

So, this is my wild theory for all the Megumi Corruption Arc conspiracy theorists out there. What if we do see Gojo win this fight against Sukuna, but when Megumi gets his body back he attacks Gojo. His body is saved but not his soul and he's finally been pushed off the edge and become his worst self.

After which, the task of saving Megumi will probably fall from Gojo to Yuji. The only person so far who's expressed any desire to save Megumi (Yuta too I guess, but him and Maki both put emphasis on saving Sukuna).

What if Megumi's line to Yuji, "Start by saving me" is actually the ultimate foreshadowing for one of the biggest fights in the series?

On occasion — once or twice a month — you return from a tiring day at work, met with a delicious and fragrant dinner at a candlelit table.

Sure, the majority of Osamu’s week is occupied by his culinary job, and of course, witnessing the smiles of satisfaction on his customers’ faces brings him joy. But seeing the way your face lights up and the twinkle in your eyes as you savor the meal he so carefully prepared… there’s nothing more precious than that.

At least it's new to me :) Very interesting to see the band described as a "psychedelic" group, and there's some nice bits here from Brian and Tim too!

Futuristic group

What will pop music be like in 1984? One group who thinks it has the answer to this question is based in Twickenham and called, of course, "1984".

The group comprises vocalist Tim Staffell, who lives in Teddington, bass man Dave Dilloway, from Whitton, lead guitar Brian (Brimi) May, from Feltham, rhythmist John Garnham, from Teddington, and drummer Richard Thompson, from Hounslow. They are all 19 years old except John, who is 20.

I talked the other evening to the boys about their group, their ideas and their plans for the future. "The psychedelic music is certainly here to stay," said Tim. "It makes more of music than mere sound, it makes it a whole and complete art form."

On stage

The boys told me about their stage performances. Dave said: "We use everything in our act, including things like shaving foam, and plastic bricks that we throw around." Dave, as well as playing bass, also rigs lighting to the group's requirements to provide the "psychedelic experiences".

Although the group have been playing for over a year - is [sic] was founded first at Hampton Grammar School - the boys have only recently had enough experience and equipment to become serious semi-professionals.

Last month the group won an area semi-final at Croydon in a national talent search, and it is now awaiting news of the national winners, who will have the chance of a test recording for a major record company.

There are problems that stand in the way of success though. Four of the group are students and in consequence they have not got unlimited time and money to give to group work. Brian stated his personal ambition as being "able to play well enough to respect ourselves," and while this sentiment is echoed by the rest of the group, it was obvious that big success is the wish of most members.

The boys show their many talents on stage. Brian made his own guitar (the product is amazing. It is in many ways superior to the mass-produced instruments, and has a wiring system that Brian has built and designed). All stage electronics are handled by Dave.

New ideas are always formulating in Tim's mind, although he is keeping quiet about some which he calls "the most revolutionary."

After we had finished chatting, the boys went back to their instruments and gave vent to several numbers.

Treatments

Standards like "Heatwave," receive a very original treatment, mostly due to the sounds that Brian coaxes out of his guitar. Jazz chords and electronic sounds add feeling and nuance to numbers that are often churned out wholesale.

Using two bass drums for a fuller sound, Richard's drumming, combined with the full bass riffs and the steady work of John, provides a firm basis for experiments in sound - an opportunity which is not wasted.

Whatever does happen to pop music in 1984, I hope that the teenagers then will have the chance to hear excitement of the type that is generated by "1984", one of the most forward looking groups today.

the horny hours convo we had (in april??? maybe lol) with dom!eddie was quite possibly the most successful and most interacted horny hours we’ve ever had. so with that being said, i’m opening up the prompts to be rewritten in your version. so there was three big ones: “don’t make me pull this car over” aka car troubles, “go pick a switch” aka switching it up, and the bath brush aka dripping down. rewrite it, make it your own, make new drama, if you’re not a brat make it non-bratty lol, make it slutty is all i ask.

All About Your Path!

Hello and happy full moon!! Hope everyone reading this is doing well 🧡 I finally uploaded a new pac cause it's been a while since I've done one and I hope you like it! This PAC will be split into two parts, what's holding you back from moving towards your path and what your path looks like

Pile 1

What is holding you back from charging towards your path :

First is little habits that create this stagnation, little things that become major like waking up late with no energy, being distracted and always mindlessly scrolling through Instagram or TikTok, telling yourself you'll do it tomorrow and never actually getting it done or choosing to play a game instead. All these things may seem so small but they actually do lots of damage. I'm going through it myself and It's really easy to dismiss it and just be like it's not that deep but it actually affects the entire plan you have for yourself and it dulls your energy more, especially when we keep saying "just this once" cause it becomes twice and thrice and four times. There is a need for self discipline and/ or creating an organized plan and sticking to it, even though I know how difficult it can be no matter how many times you can try but starting small and trying what you can really makes the difference over time. If you have ADHD then I strongly feel for you and I know how especially difficult this can be, but also trying is enough and doing it the way it works for you, being patient with yourself is also important 💖

The second is some of you seem to be gaslighting yourselves regarding this path of yours. Whatever you're dreaming of and trying to achieve, there's the energy of not trying because you have this belief that this is too big for you and that you're incapable of achieving it and seeing it through. It's as if you're saying "ay universe thanks for giving me this opportunity but take it back cause it's not mine" but it is! Just the fact you can imagine it and day dream about it means that you've already done it in the 4D and that it's yours. Each one of us is meant to do great things and create legacies If that person desires that kind of life and if they were to believe they have what it takes to do it and that they're like everyone else

Third is some are taking this way too seriously and being very logical or even firm about it that it's making them exhausted. Spirit advises you to be like a child and have the enthusiasm of a child. If a child wants to fly, all they know is they want to fly and that they will, they don't let anything or anyone get in their way even if flying isn't exactly possible but they believe so much of what fills their heart and it lights them up. You're asked to dream like a child and embrace this path of yours so enthusiastically without so much logic and seriousness and this light spirit will take you places cause it'll fill you with so much excitement and energy 🧡

What's this path about / what does it look like :

It's full of unlimited possibilities, it's more than you have ever envisioned and dreamed of. It's this door that has a door inside it, there's just so much you can do , so much that you wouldn't think is possible for you or that you could even do or that could be presented to you. It could also be something linked to your childhood. For some, it's something you loved doing as a child and something that lit you up but you simply just left it there in childhood after you grew up, this could still be something that your soul wants to do. For others, it's something you're meant to do in this world, something that was handed to you since you were a child but you might have not understood it then cause it was bigger than you, yet now it could take you places if you were to cultivate it. Lastly , there's something about you dreaming so much of things but never actually pursuing them, like you having so many day dreams or even seeing things in dreams and the message is if you could just take action on what you see yourself doing , you could be this person with so many talents and skills that can almost do anything

What is holding you back from charging towards your path :

The universe :))) the message kept repeating and it's very straightforward that this is divine intervention. What's interesting is that you're actually trying so hard to charge forward,but what's happening is the universe is giving you a big ' STOP' and the reason seems to be that 1. It's simply not time 2. You need to retreat and take a break as soon as possible because it's either that your energy is gonna crash or it crashed already. You're not ready to move forward because you need to take care of yourself first and give yourself the treatment and time you deserve. If you will ignore the universe's message, it will only try to stop you in different ways until you can't move. For some of you , because of your energy you're either not able to see the path ahead ,or you're stuck between two different paths or it's just everything seems so stuck and confusing. Same message applies, you need to step back and take care of yourself so that you can get your energy back and be in a clear state where you can think properly. Lastly, some of you are giving your energy to others or absorbing from others and there's also the message to pause and take your energy back to yourself. If you know how to protect or cleanse, please do so and set clear boundaries with the people around you

What's this path about / what does it look like :

Another interesting answer that I didn't expect :)) the universe is not willing to tell you or let you know yet because it wants you to 💫rest💫 but instead it's giving you messages. First is to cleanse your social circle , if anyone is making your energy fluctuate or giving you mixed signals or the bare minimum then they're not for you and you deserve a peace of mind instead of chaos. If there's anyone you don't have a good feeling about then that's definitely a sign they're not meant to be in your life

Second is you're asked to be in an energy of tranquility where you offer some self love and compassion for yourself, where you listen to your body and mind when they need something without judging, where you accept when you simply can't keep going longer and that everything happens in the right time and that we won't lose something if we try to rush, we will only affect ourselves.

Lastly is- this pile seems to be the pile with a lot of masculine energy, the pile that likes to be preoccupied all the time and be on the go . There's the energy of "what's next" all the time and you're asked to learn to pause , that it's okay to just chill on your couch and watch something and be 'lazy' cause it's not bad , it's okay to just lie in bed and rest for a bit or have nothing to do, it's okay to order food and just binge watch some show if you feel like it or to go out and just sit in nature or somewhere you enjoy. You will always have work but you will not always have your health and it's important to take care of it 🧡

Pile 3

What's holding you back from charging towards your path :

I want to say nothing really is holding you back because you're simply not ready. This pile seems to be exactly where they need to be. Basically you're not ready because you have things you need to heal first regarding your confidence, you're not able to see the full potential of your path because you're still not able to see the full potential of yourself and you're not expected to because there are certain things that need to be released and transformed first and the good part is you're already doing it, you're healing yourself and your heart and it's slowly opening up. You're in your cocoon but you're slowly getting out of it. Basically you're taking your time and that's exactly what you need to be doing. After this healing process, you will start to see life differently and you'll also start to realize that you have the right to living a great life, that you're deserving to live the life of your dreams where you pamper yourself and give yourself whatever you desire . It only takes some time and it's okay 🧡

What's this path about/ what does it look like :

The transformation is incredible, I'm already so proud of you :(( because you're going from someone who's in their shell and who isn't confident in themselves to someone who's at the top of their game. You're going to create the life you desire all by yourself, you'll be putting all the effort, taking all the steps, doing whatever it is you need to do and all of your effort will pay and multiply. This is the kind of life where you're satisfied with what you have, the kind of life where you can provide whatever you need for yourself and the kind of life where you're feeling good in your own skin and feeling good about yourself. I see you sharing with the world how you got there to the top, sharing all the difficulties you had to go through and all those times you thought you could never get something right, you'll share how you climbed all those mountains and how it's possible though you thought it wasn't. Your mental health :(( First and foremost, I send you my love, my prayers and I share my hope and positive energy with you , you're not alone

You guys seem to be going through a heavy state and I feel for you. For some it's depression and it's really making it difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel and to be in an optimistic state. I can see how difficult it is to see the path ahead when you can barely bear to get up in the morning. I also see a disconnection with the self and with the universe, all there is is this racing mind and those dark thoughts and I really wish I could send some protective energy your way

You guys seem to possess sharp mental energy, some calculating skills and skills with planning or management but it's being used in the opposite way as overthinking and getting lost in negative thinking so of course even though the path is in front of you, it's really difficult to see it. You're asked to be more gentle with yourself cause you might be pitying yourself for the way you feel. Don't , please, it's definitely okay to go through such a state and though it's extremely difficult and painful, trust me it passes in the end. You're not pitiful for feeling this way, you're tired and you need so much love and care and if you can't give it to yourself, don't feel afraid to ask your loved ones or reach out on the internet even, there are many people (including me) that would want to talk to you and help you through this. There's also a message that words are powerful, they multiply so whatever we tell ourselves we start to believe and attract at times. Though it's difficult to see light in this state, saying things like "even darkness ends" or "the sun shines each morning after a dark night" can help even if you will not believe it at first, the mind works with habit so whatever you tell it, it starts to adapt to it

This path seems like it's not very far from you, something like it's happening soon. Are you manifesting having someone in your life? So what I’m getting from Mumbo’s most recent episode is “Grian gives Mumbo about half of the land he’d already marked off for his big base (including possibly the land above The Rift?) and in return he gets unlimited chances to break into Mumbo’s vault and acquire all his diamonds, potentially including some he put there himself.”

This actually sounds incredibly on-brand for everyone involved, tbh. I wonder what Mumbo might find in The Rift…

I am honestly just so fascinated with how JJK is going to end because it’s gotten to a point where I truly don’t know. I could see anything at this point.

When it ends I actually hope to just completely reread it. Because I think the weekly (with the occasional break) release format definitely effects how people view and read manga. But I think if read as just one continuous story with none of the breaks, some of its flaws definitely…show. At least that was my experience when I read it! (I started reading when the Gojo vs Sukuna fight was nearing its end).

Reading the whole story or even just volumes or arcs can definitely change the impression of the story a lot. The Culling Game for example really benefits from reading it in one go instead of weekly. Although I have to say that even on rereads or when looking up specific events in a chapter I always get shocked by how aggravatingly long the Gojo vs Sukuna fight is...otherwise I would say jjk generally benefits from being read in one go, especially the fights.

The current events definitely threw my predictions for a loop (mainly because I expected the main villain who so far has pushed the story forward to actively be involved in it), but I think the further we get, the clearer the end becomes, simply because more eventualities can be counted out. I wouldn't say it's clear cut what's gonna happen or that I know exactly how it's gonna end, but I think you can make some educated guesses at this point.

For example, I think there's a good chance Yuuji either survives as the only one of the original four people team or he dies to save Megumi. You could make good arguments for both like Yuuji having to carry on the deaths of all his comerades, but always being denied to sacrifice himself for them like he so desperately wants. He will save people by killing Sukuna, but he won't be able to help the people he cares most about. Maybe you could include a moment of Yuuji being able to give Megumi a proper death. Sukuna is gone, but Megumi has been hurt to much mentally (remember he suffered through five unlimited voids and the brain damage Sukuna suffered is his too) and physically by Sukuna taking over and reshaping his body to survive. But Yuuji is there to see him off and able to give him piece of mind after he was manipulated for so long. Other option would be, Yuuji gets his wish and is able to sacrifice himself to save Megumi, Megumi possibly even taking over his body through soul swap and Yuuji dies together with Sukuna. I don't like it as much because it seems like the "easy way out" and Yuuji wanted to kill himself from the start of the series, so that feels like an unsatisfying message, but you could bring in Yuuji fulfilling Wasuke's words and dying a "proper" death killing Sukuna like he always wanted to and saving a friend through it as well. He will die surrounded by the sorcerers who helped him get this far and that lifts Wasuke's curse on him.

The other thing I'm relatively sure about is that the merger will happen in some way or at the very least Tengen is freed and runs amok. This plot point has been teased so much and it's what everything has been building on that it would feel anti-climactic for it simply never happen and it all ends with Sukuna dying and that's it. Sukuna's death being the end of everything without any other major consequences feels too neat of an end and too underwhelming. I don't think it will happen the way Kenjaku imagined by the Culling Game ending with all players dying and then all of the Japanese population gets merged with Tengen. That would mean the entire protagonist team has to be killed by Sukuna and I just don't see that happen. The ending will be a downer, but I don't think it will be straight up "the villain(s) win". Because otherwise what's the point? What do we learn from that? How would that bring the change in the jujutsu system that gets emphasized so much? So that is unlikely, but I think Sukuna could still set Tengen free, either as herself or by merging her with part of the population that has already been prepared for merging through the barrier that travelled across Japan.

Not really a prediction, but I would also like it if the protagonists (or whoever else) ends up destroying Tengen's barriers. It would mean an increase in curses, but it would also diffuse Japan's monopoly on sorcerers and huge amounts of cursed energy. It would symbolize a complete break from the old system set in place by her and the beginning of something new. Otherwise it would feel too much like the protagonists are just rebuilding status quo and will eventually repeat the mistakes of the past if the wrong people come into power. There would need to be new protections set in place, but that is a good opportunity to whipe the slate clean and start new and hopefully better.

Finished Star Trek TAS today and I got contemplative about the science fiction genre in movies and tv

For the record, tas was fine overall. You know it’s fun to laugh at the animation errors I did plenty of that. But it’s decent 70s kids fair. I wouldn’t put it on for kids today mind you, I’d just show Star Trek prodigy, but still. It very much is a product of its time. However at the same time it demonstrates the biggest hurdle sci fi has faced throughout the ages. The obsession with scale over characters.

There’s a tendency in sci fi where when the people working on a given story get seemingly unlimited resources to make a thing look as epic and grand of scale as possible, they focus on that over making the characters interesting and worth caring about. Not always, but generally it happens a lot. You see it with the big three, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Doctor Who. To pick on Doctor who for a minute, they pour buckets of money on explosions and guest stars and having a golem Doctor show up in their season 3 grand finale but the episode that season that’s regarded as peak fiction is the one where the monsters don’t even move on screen. They’re literally just statues.

Star Wars has both the prequel and and sequel trilogies for me to point to as evidence of this. For the prequels it was look at our awesome special effects and fight scenes. Oh shit we forgot make the overarching story understandable and matter to the cast before the third movie. And the case of the sequels also have consistent character development and themes. Oops.”

And lastly Star Trek. While my favorite episode is conscience of the king, my second is the empath. The most cash strapped episode of the show. It was filmed almost entirely on a black stage ffs. And yet I felt more emotion watching Kirk, Spock, and McCoy risk their lives and be willing to die for each other than I did watching agent seven and his cat hack a spaceship in 1968 Florida while Kirk and Spock stalk them.

The reason completing tas brought on this thought process was there were many writers who jumped at the chance to work on this show because of the lack of limitations of live action. Their only limit was their imagination and the 24 minute runtime. And as a result they got so caught up in the spectacle of “look at this cool new alien threat/concept,” that most of the time they forgot or didn’t have time to give the characters anything to do besides solve the problem. Or just rehash old episode ideas. But listen, they could’ve had good character interactions within 24 minutes. Doctor who is the easy one to point at but honestly if we jump forward a couple decades, (and genres) Batman and Superman tas managed to have self contained 20ish minute episodes with heart for the recurring cast. It’s not impossible to do.

Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Star Wars, were not successful just because they had cool sci fi ideas, costumes, and special effects that could be merchandised into eternity. They have endured for so long because people are invested in these characters. And if you cannot convince people to care about the characters outside of pop culture recognizability, then you will not retain an audience through the weaker stories, regardless of how much money you sank into how nice the ship looks. Instead it is doomed to fizzle out. For a contemporary example outside of movies, look at Netflix’s Voltron.

Last example and then I’m done. Netflix’s voltron perfectly displayed how you can get an audience invested in a cast of characters and then squander it because the producers/writers didn’t care about character development. After season 2 stuff stopped being character driven and started going “well the writers wanted to tell a gritty, depressing war story.” And in the end what was once one of the most popular Netflix shows is now only ever discussed in the same vain as game of thrones. Just wasted potential and missed opportunities.

I’ll end this rambling blog by repeating that imo low budget character driven sci fi is better than high budget sci fi focused on worldbuilding and cool shit you can do because of special effects or the fact it’s a cartoon. Limitations help make some of the best stories out there because they force you to think outside the box.

And it pains me that after so long a lot of the people who write this stuff don’t get that.
