Lightning and Panic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I swear I will write for other characters too... I'm just currently deep in Buck and Eddie brain rot.
Buddie x reader
Wc: 1300 ish
You pinched your arm, flinching at the sensation. There was no way this was real. This was your worst nightmare. You just needed to try harder and you were sure you would wake up.
Pinching the same spot once more, you realized that you were likely going to have a bruise soon.
Yet again, you were sitting in this awful waiting room. It felt like you had just been here waiting for news was after Eddie was shot.
Now, it was Buck.
It had been two days of waiting. Two days of worrying. Two days of desperately trying to convince yourself that he was going to be okay.
You knew they had a dangerous job. You thought you'd been prepared for that. You expected burns or maybe smoke inhalation. Not a sniper and a freak lightning strike.
Truthfully, you'd only prepared for minor injuries. Not near death experiences.
Suddenly, Eddie was kneeling in front of you. Why did he look so concerned? Something went wrong. Buck was gone.
He was talking. Why couldn't you hear him? Why are your ears ringing?
Eddie squeezed your hands almost too tight. He was trying to ground you. He took a slow exaggerated deep breath then finally, his words broke through your haze. “Breathe.”
It was then you finally realized you were barely wheezing air in and out and much too quickly. Your heart was racing. You gasped. “I-I–” more gasping. “C-c-can’t.”
Eddie moved your hands to his chest. “Yes, you can. Just follow me.” His fingers dug into the pulse point at your wrist as he took another slow beep breath and counted the pattern for you.
Tears rolled down your face as you desperately tried to calm down. You yanked your hands away from Eddie to pull at the collar of your shirt. It suddenly felt like it was strangling you.
Eddie turned toward Bobby and said something to him about a doctor. Had he whispered? Maybe. Your ears were also ringing more intensely again.
Now, you were grabbing at your chest. “H–hurts,” you panted out the word.
“I know, sweetheart,” Eddie soothed. “Just try to breathe.” He pulled your hands back down to your lap and once again pressed his fingers into your pulse point. You could see the worry in his eyes despite trying to stay calm for you.
You desperately tried to draw in more air but failed. Before long, black spots started to appear in front of your eyes. Then there was a doctor. He had to be there about Buck. You tried to back away, you couldn't handle any more bad news. “No.”
Eddie moved to the chair beside you and pulled you against his side. “It's okay, sweetheart. He's here to help you.” He pulled up your sleeve then nodded to the doctor.
There was something cold on your shoulder then a pinch and a burning sensation. You couldn't move away from it as Eddie had you held firmly in place.
Almost immediately, you felt calmer. You relaxed fully into Eddie and finally drew in a deep breath. A nurse you hadn't noticed placed an oxygen mask over your face.
You felt Eddie’s sigh of relief. “You're okay.” You weren't sure if he was talking to you or himself. “The doctor is going to run a few tests just to make sure that was a panic attack and nothing else, okay?”
You tried to snuggle further into him not wanting to leave his side. “‘m tired.”
“I know. Just relax. It's okay if you fall asleep,” Eddie soothed. He stood and lifted you into his arms bridal style. You dozed off with your head against his shoulder before he made it to the exam room.
When you opened your eyes, you were alone in a hospital room. As the grogginess started to lift, confusion set in. Why were you here? Why were you alone? There were no monitors or IV lines and aside for being tired, you felt okay.
Then the memory hit. Buck. You jerked upright. “Oh, no.” You would have stood to go find out how he was but you were suddenly dizzy. So instead, you pressed the nurse call button on the bed rail.
The dizziness mostly cleared and you were considering going to look for Eddie and check on Buck when the door swung open and a doctor entered. You vaguely remembered him from the waiting room earlier. “How’re you feeling?” he asked.
“How is Buck?” you asked, ignoring his question.
Before he could answer, Eddie came in and was by your side a moment later. “How are you?”
You huffed. “How’s Buck?”
Eddie smiled. “He's breathing on his own. He's getting better.”
Tears slid down your face as the relief washed over you. You finally felt like you could breathe again.
“Now, back to you,” Eddie redirected. “Are you feeling better?”
Shrugging one shoulder, you thought about it. “Honestly, I'm still tired. I was dizzy but that's passed. How long was I out?”
“Almost five hours,” said Eddie.
Your eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Holy crap. Wait, I thought I heard something about tests.”
“You did.” Eddie looked to the doctor to let him explain.
“We ran an EKG and blood tests because you were having some chest pain during your anxiety attack,” he explained. “Everything came back normal.”
“So then am I captive here or can I go see Buck?” you asked.
“You're free to leave,” the doctor said. Then he left the two of you alone.
“I'm sorry,” he started. “I should have been paying attention. I should have noticed you hadn't really slept or eaten. Or at least that you hadn't taken your meds.”
You just shook your head. “It's not your fault. We were both focused on Buck.”
“I still should have noticed.”
“You noticed when I was having an attack and got me help. That's all that matters.”
He just nodded, not seeming convinced.
“Can we go sit with Buck?” you asked.
“Maddie and their parents are in with him right now,” Eddie started. “How about we just go look through the window so you can see he's okay and then we go home so you can get some more rest?”
“I don't want to leave him. What if something happens?” You felt yourself spiraling. “What if something happens and– and we're not here?”
Eddie took your face between his hands and forced you to look at him. “Breathe.” He demonstrated a deep, calming breath for you. “He is stable. They don't expect anything to change overnight. And even if it did, we're not that far away. Okay?”
You took a few deep breaths. “Mmkay.”
“Besides, you know Buck would want you to rest and take care of yourself rather than sit around here.”
“Ugh. Fine,” you conceded. “Can we not tell him about my panic attack earlier?”
Eddie shook his head. “We can wait until he gets home. Unless he asks directly because I won't lie to him.”
You agreed and the two of you made your way towards the ICU. It really did help you to see him doing better. Leaning your head on Eddie’s shoulder, you were content to just stand I'm that hallway until Buck woke up but Eddie wouldn't go for that.
“Ready to go?” he asked.
“No,” you told him truthfully. “But we can anyway.”
A week later, Buck was finally coming home. You were practically vibrating with excitement.
Walking into the house, you tried to lead Buck towards the bedroom but he stopped you and attempted to head toward the couch. “You need to be resting,” you scolded him.
“Are you going to rest?” he asked.
“Me?” You asked, confused. “I'm fine. I didn't die a few days ago.”
Buck frowned. “The doctors ran tests to make sure you weren't having a heart attack because you nearly passed out from a panic attack.”
You scowled at Eddie. “When did you tell him?”
Eddie just shrugged. “He asked while you were loading up the car. I told you I wasn't going to lie to him.”
You sighed. “Regardless, I'm fine.”
Eddie shoved you and Buck towards the bedroom. “I think we could all use some rest. Let's all go take a nap and then we can watch a movie and eat take out in bed.”
“Sounds amazing. Except, when do we need to pick up Christopher?” you asked.
“Carla is keeping him overnight so we can get Buck settled in,” Eddie explained.
Buck nodded. “I vote pizza.”
“Deal,” you and Eddie agreed in unison.

Perfect Surprise | Buck
Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Pairing: Buck/Fem!Reader ♡ Genre: Fluff, Pregnancy, Surprise ♡ Word Count: 1k+ ♡ Warnings: Pregnancy, Negative Thoughts I suppose ♡ Summary: When you find out your pregnant, you decide to surprise Buck with the news. ♡ Beta: Thank you so much boo @theyarnmaidstale for reading this for me! you are the best <3 ♡ Note: I mean who doesn’t love Dad Buck? ♡ Request: hi! you are such an amazing writer truly one of my favorites on here <3 I was wondering if I could request a buck x reader where reader finds out she’s pregnant with bucks baby and it is essentially how she tells him and then how they tell the team? thank you!
Tumblr media
There was nervous excitement in the air as you sat on your living room couch, waiting patiently for your boyfriend to return home from work. Buck had already texted you that he would be home in a few minutes, which meant it was almost time for you to share the big news.
Everything was already in place for the surprise. You couldn’t wait to see the look on his face when he found out things were about to change in the most perfect way. It would be a moment the two of you would remember for the rest of your intertwined lives.
Without thinking, your hands moved to your stomach and caressed it lovingly, a soft smile on your face as you did so. It was much too early to feel anything, but still, your little nudger was in there.
You had no idea when you woke up this morning and kissed Buck goodbye before going your separate ways, that a routine checkup at the doctor's office would lead to finding out you were pregnant.
It was beyond unexpected, but certainly not unwelcomed. Or at least you hoped.
There was a tiny worry in your mind that he wouldn’t be happy, but you didn’t want to focus on that as you knew it was simply anxiety talking. Buck loved you, adored you, and had told you many times he wanted a future with you. A child with you.
Sure, the situation might not be exactly perfect. The two of you weren’t married, and the one-bedroom loft was less than ideal for your growing family, but the two of you had love and trust.
Together, you would figure everything out and be the happy family you had always dreamed of.
Your thoughts were interrupted as the front door opened and your boyfriend strode inside. Buck looked tired, as he always did after a long shift, but he brightened the moment he saw you.
“Welcome home, baby,” you said, standing up with a smile on your face.
“Sweetheart, you know you didn’t have to wait up,” Buck said, heading over to you and pulling you into a tight loving embrace.
“Of course I did, I needed to see you,” you murmured, pressing a soft kiss into his neck. “I missed you.”
“God, I missed you more. I am so glad to be home with you, today was one intense call after another. Tomorrow is my day off, thank fuck. Yours too right?”
Chuckling lightly at the hope and worry in his voice, you nodded. “Yes, we’ll be able to spend the whole day together. Promise.”
“Wonderful,” Buck said, visibly relieved. “Is it alright if we go ahead and get some rest then? We can sleep in late, then I’ll wake up and make us a big breakfast.”
“Sure, baby.”
You bit the inside of your mouth to keep yourself from smiling as the night was going exactly as you wanted. The time to surprise him was getting closer and closer, making it hard to contain your excitement.
Taking his hand, you led him into the bedroom, doing your best to avoid looking at your shared dresser. You sat down on the bed, letting go of his hand and watching as he drifted around the room.
You knew your boyfriend’s usual nightly routine by heart. He tended to shower at the station, so all he had to do was brush his teeth, put on some facial cream, and change into his pajamas, which were in his top drawer. There, he would find your hidden surprise.
It was hard, but you waited patiently until Buck was done in the bathroom and practically counted his steps as he headed over to the dresser. Your anticipation was ready to burst and he had no idea.
“God, I can’t wait to get in bed. I’m going to pass right out,” he yawned, pulling the drawer open before freezing in place.
Buck stood there for a good thirty seconds, you eyeing him with bated breath as you awaited his reaction. He turned around slowly, his blue eyes wide as he clutched the tiny green striped onesie that said “I love you.”
The moment you left the doctor's office, you headed right over to Target and bought it. It was how your mother told your father and so you knew it was the perfect way to tell Buck the news.
“___, does this mean what I think? I mean we’re p-pre…?” Buck seemed unable to get the final word out.
“Pregnant? Yes, we are,” you finished for him as you stood up slowly.
His reaction didn’t tell you much. He looked as if his entire world had come to a halt.
He’s upset. He isn’t happy and doesn’t want this.
The intrusive thought came on fast, but you pushed it away. All you wanted was to be in this moment with Buck. Whatever happened and however he felt, the two of you were in this together.
“Are you… happy?” You asked hesitantly, unconsciously wringing your hands together.
Buck let out a deep exhale and locked eyes with you. The deep emotion now smoldering in them caught you by surprise.
“Happy? There’s not a word to describe what I’m feeling… Sweetheart, we’re going to have a baby! We’re going to be parents!”
Before you could respond, Buck was pulling you into a bear hug and lifting you as he swung the two of you around. Before he suddenly froze and placed you down carefully.
“Oh god, you’re pregnant. I shouldn’t swing you. I’m sorry, fuck, are you dizzy?” He asked with genuine fear in his doe eyes.
You only laugh at his question. One, from utter relief, and two, from how adorable he was. Gosh, you were truly lucky.
“I’m just fine, Buck. Promise. I’m just so relieved that you’re happy,” you murmured, bringing your hand up to gently caress his cheek.
Buck's eyebrows furrowed. “Of course. Did you think I wouldn’t be?”
“It was just my anxiety talking. I mean I’ve never had to tell someone I was pregnant before so my brain was running through every possible response, ya know?”
“That makes sense, but darling I love you unconditionally. This is a surprise, but a welcomed one. We’re going to be a family,” Buck whispered, voice thick with heavy emotion as he placed a gentle hand on your stomach.
“We are and it sounds so scary, but at the same time like everything I’ve ever wanted.”
You gazed into his eyes as you said that and leaned in to meet his lips in a deep passionate kiss.
Whatever the future may hold, you no longer had any worries. Your new and growing family would face it together.

Headcanons: Taking care of each other when you are hurt (Evan Buckley)
Headcanon Prompts: 'Taking care of them when they are hurt.' + 'Them taking care of you when you are hurt.'
Pairing: Evan Buckley x Gn!Reader
Requested By: @spuffyfan394
Warnings: Mentions of injuries, bandages, scars and other related terminology.
Tumblr media
-
Taking care of him:
Evan gets hurt A LOT. I mean, this guy is the whump king at this point lol.
So, though you hate seeing him hurt and you worry about him a lot, you are used to his habits when you take care of him.
He tends to play down his injuries, insisting he can do things himself or insisting he is "fine".
"Fine? You can't even take three steps on your own, sit down."
But, at the same time, he does enjoy you taking care of him.
It feels very domestic to him, and he enjoys spending the time with you, though he doesn't like feeling helpless.
He has also learned that you get comfort when helping him after he's been hurt.
You worry so much, that helping him, no matter what with, reassures you that he is going to be okay.
When he is hurt, he acts different then when he is sick (meaning he doesn't act like a toddler who needs attention constantly).
Evan appreciates your gentle nature when you help him change any bandages he has, or when you need to apply some sort of cream to a wound.
Though he does not like being hurt, he does enjoy the moments that you are there for him.
Like when you help him wash his hair, or get dressed if he can't quite do it himself. When you massage sore muscles, or talk to him until he can comfortably fall asleep.
He is used to being injured, it comes with the job, but he hates worrying you. He apologizes a lot, though you always reassure him that you are just glad he will be okay.
If his injuries scar you have a tendency to run your fingers over them, tracing them, and remembering what the aftermath was like.
Evan reminds you that they are marks of survival, and that they also remind him of the times you were right by his side when he needed you.
You may chastise him for getting hurt, but it's always in a loving and joking tone. He knows you care deeply for him, and just want him to come home safely.
He always says he would do the same for you any time you are hurt.
"But don't get hurt, please."
Him taking care of you:
When you get hurt, Evan realizes why you act the way you do when he gets hurt.
The worry, and constant nagging feeling that he needed to do more, ate at him.
So, he would hover, usually a bit too much, but you knew the feeling well.
So, you let him help you, even if that meant him carrying you to the bathroom when you can walk perfectly fine.
It's cute, if not overbearing.
You would make fun of him and his "mothering" but he was just happy he could return the favor, though he would also chastise you for getting hurt, the same way you would do to him.
Evan discovered that he really enjoyed some of the more delicately intimate ways he could help you.
Brushing, washing or fixing up your hair if you couldn't reach it. Making you food and bringing it to you in bed.
Though the reason he was doing it came from something bad, he enjoyed the look on your face when he did these things for you.
It helped him to understand just why you insisted on helping him every time he got hurt as well.
If any of the others come by while you are hurt, he doesn't really let them help you in any way, he feels like it has to be him. If he doesn't do it, you wont get better.
He know's it doesn't make sense, but he doesn't it anyways.
You also learn what it's like to have someone worrying over you, and having to comfort their anxieties and remind them you are okay.
You both get to see and experience each side of taking care of your partner whether you want to or not.
You'd rather not have too, but it's a part of the job, and a part of your relationship.
xx
I know they aren't very long but I'm trying to come out of a serious case of writers block, so this is all I could get out. I hope you enjoy them anyways! And if you do please consider reblogging :)

A Favor
You and Eddie have been together a few months. He introduced you to his son after a couple dates when he knew you were something he wanted to keep forever.
You had just got off work when Eddie called you.
“Hey babe, everything ok?” You asked.
“Yeah, everything is fine, can you do me a huge favor?”
“Yeah, whats up?” You asked curious as to what he needed.
“Carla has a flat tire, can you go pick Christopher up from school?” He asked sounding desperate.
“Yeah, is there anything I need to be able to pick him up?” You responded cheerfully.
“Just your id, I will call the school and let them now”
“Ok, I’ll take him back to my place and wait for you to get off shift, then maybe we can do dinner”
“Ok that sounds great, make sure he finishes his homework”
“Will do”
“Alright, thanks” you heard him say, relief flooding his voice.
“see you later” you said, hearing the line click. You made your way to the school.
-
You had just finished helping Christopher with his homework. The two of you were now sitting on the couch. Y’all were playing a video game together. He was beating you badly. You hear Eddie come inside. He stops and watches y’all a second before saying anything.
“Hey guys!” He says.
“Dad!” Christopher yells, pausing the game and putting his controller down, running towards him.
“Hey bud, did you finish your homework?” He asks wrapping Christopher in a tight hug and kissing his head.
“Yes, Y/n helped me!” He said.
“Good, it looks like you guys had fun, Christopher why dint you go play video games while Y/n and I make dinner?” Eddie said now making his way to where you were at the counter. He wraps his arms around you.
Now that it was just the two of you he picks you up and sits you on the counter so you are face to face. He puts his forehead on yours.
“I love you, y/n” Eddie whispered. The two of you hadn’t told each other that yet but Eddie couldn’t wait.
“Eddie, I-“ you start to say before he cuts you off.
“I’m sorry, I know its too soon, I just saw you with him and it made me realize how much I feel.”
“Eddie, I love you too, I couldn’t imagine being with anyone else, you trusted me with your life today, I know you are afraid of getting hurt or worse Christopher getting hurt but I am not going anywhere” you say to him feeling him relax in your arms.
You hear Christopher come in the kitchen. You and Eddie separate.
“Whats for dinner?” He ask.
You and Eddie look at each other, “pizza” you say at the same time, causing you to laugh.
You spend the rest of the evening laughing and playing with your newly found family. The 3 of you curl up for a movie. Around 9 Eddie says he should probably take the asleep Christopher home.
“Thank you for everything today” he says in a whisper not wanting to wake the boy.
“Anytime, I love you” you reply kissing his lips and then Christopher’s head.
“I love you too” he says before walking out the door.

Part: 10/10
“I desperately wanted to hate what I could see growing before my eyes, whilst I felt the sting of bitterness deepening within the very depths of my soul.
I was being pushed but I just couldn’t hate such tender love, pure and healing those festering wounds within you both. I knew there was no way forward. This was my out and I had to take it before those dreaded dark seeds blossomed. I could not be the one to tear down love as beautiful as yours.”
The sound of silence was almost deafening in how all-consuming it was, as you stood straight ahead. You had brought the axe down hard, cutting the conversation dead in its tracks. What else could be said after such a heart-breaking confession left your cracked lips? Your mouth was dryer than the Sahara desert as you waited for the oppressive atmosphere to pass.
You would have regretted the moment those words crossed your lips if they had been a falsehood, a lie to distract from the truth. However this was your reality, this was how you truly felt. You watched as Bobby’s hope deflated as he began to disappear into himself once more. This cut deeper than anything else, as you witnessed his confidence and self-worth shattered into a million differently shaped pieces. This was now what you wanted but a by-product.
No matter how you phrased it, no carefully thought-through planned statement could have stopped the blunt force of agony that swiftly followed. It was a hard pill to swallow but you couldn’t skirt around what this was. This was the end of the road when hearts got broken, where feelings were pushed out of the way for the cold harsh light of day. This was a break-up, one that had been long coming. You had heard the deafening sirens in the distance but ignored them for as you as possible. You had wanted this to work, you had wanted them in your life as your romantic partners.
This was failure plain and simple, no matter how it was presented even neatly with a bow tied on top. This attempt at an unconventional relationship, a throuple had crashed and burnt in a way that you hadn’t given a second thought to. Yet here you were with an increasingly despondent Bobby. Athena had held steadfast to her second amendment rights, falling silent and staring anywhere to avoid your gaze.
You felt as if you had been caught with your hand in a cookie jar when you had been told no treats before dinner. At this moment, shame and guilt were the most prevalent emotions but shades of regret and the anguish of waking up alone tomorrow were starting to manifest, mixing in. The weight of this new dawn was unlike what you had experienced before. You had navigated through both messy and amicable breaks but this felt beyond different.
This would be a whole new scenario to manoeuvre through, the various twists and turns that encompassed the maze that you standing in with walls that stretched as far as the eye could see. Your reality had somewhat shifted, changing the illusionary location rapidly. In a blink of an eye, the interrogation room melted away. This was what your mind replaced it with. An inescapable maze, that you rushed through but constantly failed to find the correct path that would lead you out.
This was your anticipated worst-case scenario in one way but yet things were not playing out as you initially imagined. It was a hell of a lot worse than anything that your twisted mind would conjure up. You should feel relieved as the pressure on your chest was finally released as you spoke what had been lingering in the back of your mind. That dejected look in Athena’s eyes stung more than ever thought it might as if that knife you used to cut the thread connecting you to them had been turned around and thrust into your chest.
It twisted left then right, damaging just enough with each turn of the wrist knowingly to leave a mark behind. A reminder whenever you dared to glance into the mirror at your reflection. There it would be, a figurative wound, raw and never truly closing for all your days to come. A fractured heart, aching to be healed but the missing piece could never be reclaimed. This was the price too high that would be paid here and now. The piper was calling and this was your reply.
What else was there to be said? The ball was in their court, you just needed to be patient and wait to see what happened next. Bobby Nash, Fire Captain of Firehouse 118 stood off to one side contemplating how small his world had just become. In a few short minutes, his happy little world had frozen over as feelings of failure, inadequacy, confusion and grief overtook his peripheral vision. Sliding over him like the visor clicking down on his helmet.
This felt like a step to the side, not a step backwards into the darkness. He wasn’t alone in his despair this time. He had a partner along for the ride-sharing the load as he felt Athena slide along before placing her hand into his. An act of comfort, this was what he needed. Tears would come but not quite yet. He had cried enough for more than one lifetime. Athena barely contained the sorrow as it quelled beneath her simmering fury.
The storm had come and gone, brushed aside in the heat of the moment. A numbness soon followed, settling over the two of them as they took their first steps back into the world, their hearts bruised and cracked but holding firm. Knitting the threads that held them together tighter than before. This had tested them, pushing them to the edge, only to pull them back again.
One where things hadn’t worked out when they tried taking a different path, was by inviting one another in and opening up their cosy relationship. It had been one hell of a ride, where flames of passion smouldered. However, ultimately the spark dimmed as that once fierce blaze cooled down until three had disappeared right back to the beginning. Where a couple stood there, watching as the third left.
Had the right person stumbled in at the wrong time? This bizarre thought dared to cross his mind. Maybe this was simply poor timing and ill planning. He had nothing but time to run all the questions, the what-ifs and the rabbit holes that it might lead him down. Athena would be there to set him straight when he’d evitable delve too far into the depths of his mind, becoming lost in the dark. She would be the light to emulate the path hidden from his sight.
This was both the end and a new beginning. It would be an uphill battle, only this time he would have someone else along for the ride. “This was never the plan when Athena and I opened up our relationship, to invite you in you for a time and then to push you right back out into the cold” He started as he worked through his thoughts, trying to vocalize his rapidly shifting feelings.
He was everything all at once. A perfect storm locked away in a glass flask but the fierce winds were steadily calming. Athena was another story together as she had remained tight-lipped. All her words were locked away in a vault, under lock and key. There was no doubt that she would make one hell of a poker player, as she masked through each time she bluffed about the cards in her hand. Winning round after round with ease. Burning holes in various pockets and wallets like a seasoned pro. This was different, this was her vanishing beneath her mask and simply walking away.
Storm Athena had vanished in a blink of an eye but was it for the better? That would be the question you were battling with in the days to come. Overanalyzing all the little details of this moment, trying to find sense and logic in her actions. Trying to almost read what was happening within, to hear those precious few thoughts that indicate her next play, the steps that she would inevitably take.
Would things ever truly be amicable? You hoped that would in time but that’s all you could do. Hope that the day would crest over the horizon sooner rather than later but you wouldn’t push. They deserved all the time in the world as the walls sheltering their little piece of paradise began reconstruction. As their battered and bruised hearts started on the next stage of their healing journey without you. Athena, I know that you don’t want to talk to me. Hell, I don’t expect you to even respond or read this but please know that I never meant to hurt you or Bobby. I saw the door start to close.
I should have tried harder to reach out, to be heard but we are long past that. I don’t know if I’ll be back this way but please know that I did cherish the time that I was there standing toe to toe with you and Bobby. I would never want to stand in the way, have that loving affection turn sour and embittered by the very experience of having a front-row seat to a show that slowly capsizing.
You deserve better than this, you both do. The dear John letter was a stupid and careless idea that I never thought all the way through but please know that I will never freeze out the lines of communication if you ever think of me and want to reach out for that long overdue talk. I will say this one last thing,
I did deeply care about the pair of you, you meant the world to me but this was not our time. This was not ours around but it is yours and Bobby’s. I saw that secret smile whenever you locked eyes with him and vis versa. A love story in motion but I was grateful to have been a part of it. I wish you nothing but all the happiness in the world for all that is to come.
Clicking send hadn’t been the hardest part, as you sat in the seat of the Grey Hound bus heading out of town. The hospital had arranged transport to the bus station then the rest had been up to you. Your one-way ticket was tucked firmly between the pages of the cheesy romance book you had picked up in the little shop at the hospital on your way out. Something to keep your mind preoccupied.
You had let yourself chuckle softly when you had first pulled it out of your bag. You hadn’t even checked the title when choosing between the limited range and selection starting up from the shelves. The three different books to choose from, you had split down the middle and just gone for door room two which had turned out to be the only romance-heavy option. It was truly karma in action, a borderline cruel reminder of what once had been yours.
An epic love for ages, well it might have been if the fire hadn’t been blown out. You had been one to finish off those embers, never once giving them a chance to reignite. Now as you sat staring out of the window watching the world rush past. A sense of conflicted peace rolled over. This was a new beginning, a chapter closing as you started on a new adventure into pastures unknown.
Whether the grass was greener on the other side, you’d soon find out as the bus turned the corner and headed out onto the freeway. You had crossed the point of no return more than once in the last few hours. Or so it felt but there was no point in looking backwards, no matter how much it hurt to admit.
Silently you muttered a single word, finally cutting the tattered remains of the thread that held you in place.
Goodbye
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It had been a rollercoaster of ups and downs in the years since you had last dared to step foot in Los Angeles. Both professional and personal. You pushed any thoughts of those failed relationships and the dead-end jobs that landed at your feet when you had struggled to find a home.
Home had found you when an unmissable job opportunity crossed your desk one fine day three months back. It was almost impossible to stop your fingers from typing up and updating your resume. Before you had known it, you had completed the application and clicked the send button launching into the depths of the electronic superhighway that was the internet. Regret did not follow in its wake. You had anticipated some awkwardness resonating within you but nothing occurred.
You had expected nothing to come from it, it was almost a complete shot in the dark. Yes, you had the skills and the experience in a similar field but would that be enough? As you worked your shoes off day in and day out, you had pretty much forgotten about that one particular job application sent three weeks beforehand.
You had long since concluded that if you hadn’t heard by now then you were highly unlikely to hear anything at all. You pushed forward with the daily grind. Going to work and then back home. Rinse later and repeat.
Until that one notification last thing on Friday night shook things up. An interview then a second and a third soon followed after. Before long an offer of another job, a chance to spread your wings and take flight back to the City of Angels manifested. All that you needed to do was simply say yes, well that and find a place to set up shop. Apartment hunting pre-pandemic was hard enough but this was a whole new ball game. Virtual viewings were the done thing in the post-pandemic world.
Viewing a possible home through the screen of any available device, a tour at your fingertips allowed you to go from room to room as you tried to ascertain whether this one, the third tour of the day was the one. Whether it met all your basic requirements. Was it too far from your base of operations? Was it located in a reasonable neighbourhood? Were there good transportation links into the city itself?
Question after question arose as you continued to scroll into the next room. This seemed a lot harder than all the times before when you had needed to go apartment hunting. It was turning into a headache, they all could easily be made to look rather simpler with the click of a well-positioned camera lens.
As text came through lighting up your phone screen, you paused the video for a moment. The name displayed above the message knocked you for six. You hesitated opening it, for it could easily go one or two ways. For this moment in time, you were solely existing in Schrödinger's cat type of scenario.
It could both be a harmless conversation starter, cracking open what once had been slammed shut or yet it could be something that held steadfast to the notion of flogging a dead horse. Or it be both at the same time but until you dared to look inside that box, you wouldn’t know. Without a second more to mull it over, you clicked upon it. You held your breath as the message revealed itself to your increasingly growing anxiety that bubbled within.
After all this time, Athena responded and replied to your mammoth message sent. Your olive branch to do right by her, to have the chance to sit down and talk like adults. To see if it was truly possible to let sleeping dogs lie and move forward as friends. You hated the idea of completely burning that bridge and cutting her and Bobby out of life because of your mistakes. There had been the building blocks for a stable foundation which you have decided had been cracked.
In the time since then, you had searched through every avenue of what had been. Through rose-tinted glasses, you had viewed the long hours, the lapses in replies and the never-ending chain of cancellations and rearranged dates in haste. They were a part of the daily up and downs when dating two first responders. You had acted with the emotional range of a moody teenager. You hadn’t taken the time to consider what it meant for them, who you were at the end of the day.
You were meant to be their safe harbour, away from the multiple emergencies that lingered on the other side of that door. When it slammed shut, you could have their light in the dark leading through the long nights. Instead of salving to heal their wound, you had ripped them wide out, tearing out their hearts, watching as bled at your feet when you had penned that letter without giving each of them a second thought.
It had all about you. You had changed and grown as a person since then learning more about how to navigate a relationship. The many twists and turns that came and went day in and day out and learning from your past indiscretion when it came to communication lay at the heart of every relationship. Looking back, it hadn’t been your finest hour the last time you were even in the state. You had run away, tail tucked between your legs across several state lines under you found yourself darkening your brother’s door. He had been expecting you.
Only a few weeks later than initially planned. You had kept him updated from your hospital bed, your ear red raw from his worried rants stuck on repeat like a broken record. Each time you called, He softened his tone and inclination and by the time you arrived. The once bare-to-the-bone wire-like threads that had once connected you had begun to heal, deepened as that proud man opened his heart and mind to welcome home the sibling that had been pushed away. It had been a challenging climb but he had been by your side, walking in tandem.  He had grown as a man, as a brother and as a human being.
One relationship had flourished, whilst another faded away. However this message, oh how it made your heart skip a beat. Anxious laden but still hope began to flutter its paper-thin wings as it flicked back to life.
I will not deny that your action hurt, not only me but Bobby too. It has taken me years to come to terms with how things went down. I’m ready to talk, understand and move forward completely then we can go from there.
It had been frank and straight to the point like the woman behind those words but it was a chance. One that won’t waste this go around. It was hard not to smile, to fight back those feelings that you long since buried. Soon enough those dreaded butterflies would take up residence within your stomach but you won’t let them consume you. This was a fresh start, not a blank slate.
Athena, thank you for this. Let me know when you are free to speak. I am ready to answer all the questions you have. I’m sure that there are plenty, I will be nothing short of completely honest with you
You watched the screen, waiting for those two little ticks to appear. The sign that the message had been delivered then you’d have to kill time until the colour changed from grey to blue showing that Athena had read your message. You placed your phone down as you couldn’t be glued to that device like a lovesick fool. The ball was now in her court now.
When the message arrived, it was simple. Date and time staring up at you. A question then arose in the back of your mind, who would be the one to initiate the phone call in question? However, before you could even type out a response, another message appeared. She would be the one to call you. It felt damn near bizarre finding yourself in a situation such as this. However, you’d pushed on through if it meant salvaging a relationship from the wreckage. Even if it would be nothing but wholly platonic or not in the long run.
As you typed a quick reply, you smiled softly feeling happier than you had in months, as a sense of peace washed over you as you made your way of the room. A list as long as your arm began to form in your mind of all the possibly questions that might soon be coming your way.
“It’s a start, the best that I could have hoped for” You softly repeat like mantra as you considered the next steps. Whatever they might be. The bounce in your step would come in time but still each stride no longer felt like you were walking in treacle. Weighed down with the guilt that you had long since carried upon your shoulders.
Peace was just the beginning if things truly went well. This was only the first of hopefully upon this new trail off the beaten path.
New memories to be made once you had truly arrived but you shouldn’t get ahead of yourself. One foot in front of the other, never pushing forward unless the opportunity presented itself. You finally could let go of that aching sense of guilt that hung deftly around your neck. The hangman’s noose tightened of its own accord through the day, worsening when you were lying alone at night, clock-watching until sleep overtook you.
Pushing away the persistent thought of what if, what if you could go back and change the order that events had played out. You simply couldn’t but it was in the past, finally buried when Athena knew the truth behind your actions. The why, the how and the emotions that drove your hand when drawing the next card from the deck of life.
When you drew the next one, it would be the one that changed your tomorrow into bright light that you’d lovingly thrive to keep joyfully humming in all the days that came after. Through the many ups and downs as you rode through the hard and trying times, through the days were sun shone brightest as if it was only illuminated for you and the ones you loved.
The hours seemed to rush past waiting for the sun to slip beneath the horizon. As day seamlessly melted away as night took hold. You stood silent as a mouse, staring out at the night sky smiling to yourself as innocent enough thoughts overtook as you pictured a new dawn. This was only the beginning, to gain Athena’s forgiveness, trust and friendship was a road that needed to be walked. A journey that you had started, crossing the threshold when you had offered an olive branch.
You had gained ground but that conversation was all that mattered. You wanted to make good on your promise. Tomorrow was now more than just another day, one to toil through the hours until it was time to head home. Athena then maybe one day you could bring yourself to face Bobby.
As you rebuilt your world, one thread at a time. It would not be the same as before but still, it would be home.

For most people the global pandemic meant working from home and staying away from everyone and everything, trying not to get sick. But as a frontline worker and a first responder, that was never really an option for you. For you and the rest of the 118 it meant rapid tests every morning, face coverings at all times, and setting an example for everyone else.
To top off the complicated situation, over the time of your increased closed quarters at work you had developed somewhat of a situationship with your boss. The rest of your colleagues were unaware (thankfully) and you hoped through everything that would be the one part of your life that remained casual and uncomplicated. And it was until one fateful morning in May 2020.
“Here’s your test,” you passed a box over to Bobby while he walked up to the kitchen counter, a cup of coffee in hand.
“And here’s your tea.”
“Honestly, I’m not even convinced these work,” you noted while pouring the buffer fluid into the small tube. “I have never seen a positive COVID test, how are we supposed to know if these are the real deal?”
“Hopefully we’ll never have to see a positive one,” Bobby said.
You drank your tea and coffee and prepared something for breakfast while waiting for the time to be up so you could make sure you weren’t sick before you went in for work.
“Uh, Bobby…”
You looked down at your test while Bobby came and glanced over your shoulder. You looked back at each other with wide eyes.
“You can’t go to work,” he pointed to you when the realization dawned on him. “Wait, I can’t go to work. What are we going to tell them?”
“It’s fine we’ll just call separately, I’ll tell them I got sick you say that you went out to get groceries and got exposed, no big deal.”
“And you can’t go out so I guess you’ll just isolate here?”
“Oh God, this is going to end badly, I can feel it,” you pinched the bridge of your nose and shook your head. “One step at a time. I’m gonna go call the team.”
“At least we know the test works,” Bobby called as you walked to his bedroom and you rolled your eyes.
You both tried your best to deal with the team, Bobby having a bit of a harder time than you considering you called in first to tell everyone you were sick.
“I think I managed to convince everyone to stay away for a bit,” you said while putting on a mask, Bobby motioned for you to take the package with you and you nodded, thinking it was probably for the best considering he wasn’t sick…yet.
“Hopefully it’ll be a quick bug, right? Then things can go back to normal.”
“Yeah,” you agreed. “And are you sure you’re okay with me staying here? I don’t really wanna be a burden and take over your room or anything.”
“No it’s fine,” he insisted. “You’re already here and I have to be isolated anyways. Plus, it’s always nicer to have someone around when you’re sick right?”
You just gave him a small smile with your eyes before retreating into his bedroom and closing the door behind you.
As soon as it was shut, you could hear Bobby begin to clean up, washing the dishes and disinfecting everything with bleach and Lysol to avoid getting sick. You couldn’t blame him, it was an odd situation, maybe even a little awkward, you’d only ever come over after work and most days you left right after breakfast.
It had started as a casual companionship that just spiralled into something where everything was unsaid.
You looked at yourself in the mirror, only then realizing the clothes you had were not the best for being sick in bed.
“Hey Bobby,” you called from your room. “Can I borrow a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt or something?”
“Yeah, that should be okay, take whatever you’ll need and when you’re better we’ll just do a load of laundry.”
“Thank you,” you sighed. “And Bobby?”
“Mhmm?”
“I’m sorry…that you got caught up in all this and have to deal with me now…I just-,”
“Don’t mention it, like I said, no big deal.”
“Right,” you nodded to yourself. “No big deal.”
Two Days Later…
“Uh Bobby!” you called, your voice sounding congested and followed by a loud bronchial cough. “We’ve got a problem.”
“What’s the problem?” he asked.
“Buck wants to bring me food.”
“And?”
“I’m not at my house, what the hell am I supposed to tell him?” you groaned and flopped back onto the bed.
“Just call and explain that he shouldn’t risk it and you’ve already made something for lunch and dinner.”
That part wasn’t a lie, with all the spare time in his hands Bobby was cooking up a storm and you had the finest meals every day, but ate them in an awkward silence across from each other, a door between you.
“Alright, but if I can’t stop him then we’re going to have to deal with the consequences.”
Bobby didn’t respond so you picked up your phone and called Buck’s cell waiting for him to pick up.
“Hey, how’s Miss Rona?” he chuckled when he picked up on the other line.
“Not funny, Buckley,” you grumbled. “Look, even you can hear it, I sound terrible. I don't want you to risk it, Buck, don’t bring me food.”
“Come on, I’ll be safe! I’ll drop it off at your door and then we can talk on the phone while you eat so you aren’t alone.”
“No Buck,” you sighed. “I already made food for lunch and dinner, just stay as far away from my apartment as you can ok?”
“Ok, if you insist, but don’t come crying to me for McDonalds when you get sick of chicken noodle soup.” he chuckled.
“I won’t don’t worry,” you coughed. “Jesus, I gotta take some more Buckley’s, and please send my regards to whichever family member of yours made such a gag worthy cough syrup,”
“Not related, but it tastes awful and it works.”
“I hate how much I love that slogan,” you laughed a little, but it only sent you back into a coughing fit. “Alright, really I gotta go, tell everyone I say hi and that I’m not dead yet, okay?”
“Will do. You take care of yourself.”
“Thanks Buck, bye,” you hung up the phone and did exactly what you said you would. Poured yourself some cough syrup and gagged as soon as it went down your throat.
“You okay in there?” Bobby knocked on the door.
“Yeah, just the cough syrup,” you moaned a little and rubbed your head.
“You sure everything’s okay?” he pressed.
“I just…” you hesitated. “I feel like shit.”
“On a scale of 1-10 how shitty?” he asked.
You were silent for a moment before shrugging your shoulders and saying seven.
“I don’t think there’s much you can do, I have a whole army of medication here, I just have to be careful and rest.”
“Yeah,” he agreed, but his tone made him seem unconvinced.
You tried to lay down and get some rest and what felt like minutes later you discovered had actually been closer to sixteen hours and it was the next day and you felt ten times worse than the day before.
You looked down at the sheets that were soaked with sweat and when you tried to move your whole body ached like you had just run a 40K with zero training.
You tried to speak, but your throat was dry so you reached for the water first, chugging it before knocking on the wall, hoping Bobby was awake.
“Everything alright in there?” you could hear him get up and ask.
“I-I think I have a fever,” you said wearily. “Can…C-Could you come check?”
“Yeah of course, just let me grab a thermometer and a mask.”
Bobby was back a few moments later and opened the door to quite the sight.
“Bet you can’t even believe you slept with me huh,” you tried to tease to lighten the situation, but you could see Bobby had become so zeroed in on your state that it was no use.
He quickly felt the back of your forehead with his hand before confirming his suspicions with the thermometer.
“Wow, you’re burning up,” his hand cradled your cheek for a moment, feeling the heat radiate off your sticky and sweaty skin. “Let me go get you some Tylenol okay, and maybe an ice pack too. I’m not leaving you here by yourself.”
“But what about-,”
“I need to make sure you don’t take a turn for the worse. I don’t want to have to take you to the hospital,”
You nodded and quieted yourself, watching as he went to grab you some more medication and that ice pack.
The cold touch felt amazing against your skin, but it wasn’t long before you were shivering from the fever and wanted to huddle underneath the blankets.
“Y-You know, I haven’t b-been sick since before I w-was in the department,” you told Bobby. “S-Still sucks a-as bad as I remember.”
“I can imagine,” he brushed some hair out of your eyes. “If you can, you should try and get some sleep, it might make things a little better.”
You wanted to listen to his advice, but as much as you tried you could not fall asleep. Your fever continued to get worse, but not bad enough to merit taking you to the ER.
All the while, Bobby only left your side to bring you more food or something to drink. You wished he would stay far away from you, it was better he didn’t get what you had, but he seemed adamant on staying.
It was things like this that made it hard for you to separate what you had from a real relationship, which it wasn’t.
It was just an arrangement where you would meet from time to time and sleep together.
Sometimes you just wished you could be out with it, ask him out on a real date and go out for dinner because if you were being honest, a couple weeks into whatever it was you were doing, you had already realized you wanted more, but as usual you were too shy to speak up about it.
“Bobby, c-c-,” you were cut off by another coughing fit, at least you were wearing a mask, it was the least you could do to assure he didn’t get sick. “Sorry, can you pass me one of the cough drops?”
“Of course, but maybe you should eat a bit more first,” he suggested. “Let me help you sit up.”
He wrapped an arm around your back and placed you into a seated position before grabbing the bowl of soup for you.
“Bobby, I think I’m still well enough to feed myself,” you chuckled.
“It’s not everyday you get pampered, just eat the soup,” he encouraged and you didn’t have the energy to give in.
You ate about half the bowl before you got full (in your defence it was a pretty big bowl) and Bobby passed you the cough drop to help continue to soothe your throat as the soup had done.
“Hey, since I’ve already been with you in here, why don’t you come out to the living room and watch some TV with me. It’ll be a nice break from sleeping, trust me.”
“Sure, why not,” you pushed yourself up from the bed and with a little help from Bobby, walked to the living room and took a seat on the couch.
You both agreed on some random TV show you both hadn’t seen, but by episode three you were knocked out cold.
Bobby left you like that for a while, thinking it would be best to let you get as much rest as you could, but when you started to toss and turn and mumble things under your breath he had a feeling your fever was coming back and getting even worse.
“Hey, I think we should get you back in the bedroom where the Tylenol is,” he gently shook you awake, but the fever was making you a little delirious.
“Will you stay with me?” you mumbled. “Please?”
“Sure if that’s what you want,” he nodded, helping you up and letting you lean on him while you walked back to the room.
“Bobby,” you said groggily as you sat down on the bed. “Why aren’t we dating?”
Bobby certainly wasn’t expecting that kind of question to come from you, but you had a fever, you were barely controlling the temperature of your body, how could you control what you said.
“Well, I think when whatever this is started we didn’t really think about it…did we.”
You sighed and shook your head.
“I just think we’d make a good couple,” you said shyly. “Cause I like you, like really like you, and when you do stuff like give me soup and sit with me when I feel like seven shits out of ten shits, it’s just hard.”
While listening to you, Bobby had opened up the Tylenol and placed two in his hand which he was now handing to you with a glass of water.
“I know,” he responded. “We can talk about it more when you’re better, how’s that?”
You agreed and took the medication after which he helped you lay down on the bed. He glanced at you for a moment before lowering his mask and pressing a gentle kiss to your forehead.
“If it makes it any better, I was already yours from the start.”
He placed his mask back over his mouth and nose before sitting next to you, his back against the headrest.
You reached for his hand and he took it, holding it thinking if he squeezed too tight he might break you.
He really hoped you would get better soon.
Bobby didn’t want to bring up what you had said when you were feverish, fearful that you had said it while hazy from the sickness. He didn’t want to put any pressure on you to have a discussion while you were still recovering, so he thought unless you brought it up he’d wait for you to test negative.
In the meantime over the next few days as you slowly came out of the slump of fevers and your cough died down, you fell into an easy rhythm of things together. It was simple things, like FaceTiming while eating meals or chatting across from the door, but it felt safe and familiar, like you’d been doing it forever.
“Time for your test,” Bobby said, coming into the room with a mask and handing you the rapid test. It was just over a week and a half of being sick and even then you’d have to wait at least another week minimum to go back to work. Bobby had been planning on doing the same either way since he was constantly exposed to you. “I already took mine in the kitchen, I'm still negative.”
“Thank goodness. I'm kind of surprised though, we’ve been cautious but not like lock me in the room cautious,” you said. “How did you not get sick?”
“Just the Nash immune system,” he shrugged. “Let me know what the verdict is.”
You nodded your head and took off your mask once he left and began the process of testing yourself.
On cue, you sneezed when swabbing your nose and Bobby chuckled like he always did.
“Is there like a button or something in my nose that just makes me sneeze every single time I put this up there?” you asked and Bobby laughed. “Hey don’t laugh! One time I sneezed before I could pull it out and I think I poked my brain.”
That just made him laugh harder and you couldn’t help but smile as you swirled the buffer fluid and placed three drops on the rapid test.
After the agonizing fifteen minutes Bobby waited anxiously for the answer, but when you stepped out of the room without a mask and the test in your hands that spoke for you.
“It’s negative,” you almost sounded disbelieving. “I-Wow it’s actually negative.”
“Maybe you should take one more just to confirm,” Bobby suggested and you agreed, only to have the second test confirm your suspicions.
“This is great!” you grinned. “We can get this place cleaned up, relax and rest for one more week and then we’re back at it.”
You and Bobby high-fived and started by cleaning up the room you were staying in. A load of laundry hopefully got rid of any lingering sickness from your clothes and the sheets, a wipe down and vacuum took care of the other surfaces.
Once the sheets were out of the wash, you and Bobby began to put them back on the bed. He couldn’t stop thinking about how he was going to bring up the conversation he’d promised he’d have with you, but every time there was an opening it didn’t feel right to say anything.
Instead he decided it would be best to take the next week in isolation in stride and say something when the time felt right, not when you were trapped under the same roof.
When the day came when you were supposed to head back out to work you could both say with a certainty that you were done with being cooped up in the house and were ready to get down to business.
Chimney was more than happy to give up his responsibilities as acting fire Captain and as Hen so articulately put it, balance had been restored in the universe.
“You know it was really weird not having you around,” Buck told you when you sat for lunch together, distances slightly due to the restrictions.
“Awe so you missed me,” you made a cute squishing motion with your hands and Buck rolled his eyes.
“Yeah sure, I missed you the same way I miss Maddie for five minutes then she starts hovering and babying me and then I don’t miss her so much anymore.”
“Buck, be nice,” Bobby gave him a warning look.
“What come on, it's the truth, you’re like my sibling, it’s a compliment,” he insisted.
“I know it was but the words by themselves really didn’t sound like it,” you chuckled. “Don’t worry Bobby, if he knows what’s good for him he’ll stay on my good side.”
“And who’s on your bad side?” Chimney asked, coming to join you with his food.
“Currently just Eddie because he used the last of my sweetened condensed milk.”
“You didn’t label the milk, how was I supposed to know it wasn’t for grabs?”
“Eddie, you know I use it in my coffee when I need an extra kick in the morning, don’t make excuses,” you playfully rolled your eyes. “Anyways, Buck’s always on thin ice, you and Hen are safe,” you noted.
“What about Bobby?” Hen asked.
“Hmm,” you sent Bobby a knowing look and he tried to hide the smile that came across his face, after he spent two weeks taking care of you he was on a side the others didn’t even know existed. “Yeah, he’s a few steps above you and Chim,” you said truthfully. “No offence, but you guys don’t make me desserts every week.”
“Fair enough,” Hen agreed.
After you all finished eating you and Bobby cleared up the dishes so Eddie and Hen could wash them and he quietly asked if you could meet him in his office to talk.
You nodded your head, unaware of what was to come of it, but when the door closed behind you and you saw Bobby sitting at the edge of his desk with his arms crossed you knew something was up.
“Is it really just because of the desserts?” he asked.
“I’m sorry what?”
“Why I’m a few steps above Hen and Chim,” he clarified.
“I mean yeah,” you nodded slowly. “Bobby, what are you trying to get at?”
He sighed and rubbed his hand on the back of his neck.
“When you were sick,” he started. “Like very feverish, to the point I was almost going to bring you to the hospital, you said something to me. I promised we’d talk about it when you were better, it's just I could never seem to find a good time.”
“What did I say?” you asked, unable to remember this conversation.
“Something along the lines of why aren’t we dating. Actually dating, not just sleeping with each other every week.”
“I-I said that?” you frowned and he nodded, but he shifted slightly again, closing himself off to you and you tried to amend what you had said to make sure it didn’t sound like you hadn’t meant it. “I mean I just… I can’t remember.”
He nodded, “I’m sorry I shouldn’t have said anything.”
“No, um…what would you have said?” you asked. “If I asked you that now.”
He stayed silent before he eventually shrugged his shoulders, “Honestly, I don’t know,” he admitted. “I just think that if things go on they’re going to get more complicated. I think we should know where we stand.”
“And where do you stand, Bobby?” you asked, coming closer. “Am I on your good side? Or your bad side?”
You reached out your hand to take his and after running his thumb across your knuckles and giving your hand a light squeeze he said,
“You’ve always been on my good side,” he smiled. “And I know I’m a bit rusty, but I’d like to take you out on a date. If that’s something you’re up for.”
“Yeah, I think I’d be up for that,” you agreed and closed the gap between you even more, resting a hand on Bobby’s cheek. “I don’t think I ever thanked you for taking care of me.”
“It’s okay, good practice in case you ever get sick again,” he chuckled.
“I’m glad to know you’d be willing to take care of me again,” you smiled, you leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. “I hope that helps a little with the thank you.”
“Maybe just one more,” he said before meeting your lips again just as the door opened and Buck said,
“Hey Cap, I was just- WOAH,” he exclaimed. “You two?! I-How? Why?! What?!”
You and Bobby quickly pushed yourselves apart as Buck stared at you wide eyed while he was joined by his coworkers.
Bobby’s face was very red and you couldn’t look up from your feet.
“What happened?” Eddie asked once he ran into the room.
“They were kissing,” Buck said, like he couldn’t understand how that would ever be a possibility. You supposed in Buck’s eyes you were both perpetually single forever.
“What?” Hen asked with a chuckle. “When did this happen?”
“Um a couple months back,” Bobby said. “Do we really need to talk about this?”
“Yes, we really do,” Chimney nodded.
“You guys,” you looked up and saw they wouldn’t let go so you looked at Bobby to tell him you’d take the hit. “Look, this started a little while after everything got shut down. We both live alone and  it was hard not being able to see people so since we were in the same bubble we just…started to casually see each other,” you settled on.
“And it’s still casual?” Buck asked.
You pressed your lips in a thin line and Bobby shook his head.
“No, I think I’d say it’s getting serious.”
“It’s about damn time,” Hen grinned. “I have been rooting for you two ever since you got stuck in that elevator together.”
“Really?” you chuckled.
“Yeah, and plus now Chimney owes me five bucks.”
“Deals a deal,” Chimney groaned and placed the bill in his friend’s hand.
“So when you got sick?” Eddie asked.
“I was at Bobby’s, that’s why we both couldn’t come in and why you couldn't drop food off for me,” you explained.
“Hey, why don’t we leave these two lovebirds alone,” Hen suggested. “I think you interrupted something, Buck.”
She dragged the team out of Bobby’s office and closed the door only for you and Bobby to look at each other and laugh.
“At least we don’t have to sneak around anymore.”
“Yeah, but sneaking around was kind of fun,” you admitted. “But I’m glad they know. It just makes it more real.”
You held his hand and he gave it a squeeze.
“I should thank your fever,” he said. “I don’t think I would have ever had the courage to bring this up if it wasn’t for that.”
“Who would have thought, a small positive in a global pandemic,” you chuckled and leaned into his side. And as odd as it was to say, you were both thankful for the isolation.

Whumptober Day One - Alt Prompt - Whimpering
Fandom: 9-1-1 Word Count: 758 words Pairing: Buck x Reader Warnings: Mentions of nightmares.  Tagslist: @firemedicdiaz @fireladybuckley @winterreader-nowwriter @iamasimpingh0e @dayrin085 @hauntedmilkshakeghost @floralbuckleys @alexxavicry If you want to be added or taken off my tagslist please let me know! Buck isn’t sure of the time, but he knows it’s still early judging by the darkness of your shared bedroom, when he’s woken up by you tossing and turning next to him. A quick glance at the alarm clock on his bedside table shows you both still have a few hours before your shift. He’s about to turn over and get a few more hours when he hears soft whimpers coming from your side.
“No…God, no. Please…no,” you murmur quietly, but Buck can hear the distress in your voice.
Buck flicks on the lamp next to him, the soft yellow glow illuminating the bedroom allowing Buck to see you. Nightmares weren’t uncommon for either of you, but you hadn’t had one this bad for a while now.
“Y/N? Wake up for me sweetheart. It’s just a bad dream,” he soothes, gently shaking your shoulder in an attempt to rouse you.
He watches as you flinch away from his touch, only causing your panic and voice to rise further as the nightmare still has you in its clutches.
“No! Buck!” you scream again, this time more distressed, whatever you’re seeing in your dreams even terrifies Buck at this point, never having heard terror in your voice like this before. He watches helplessly as you toss and turn more, your back arching off the bed, tears rolling down your cheeks as your screams turn to more incoherent words and whimpers.
Buck sighs, getting up and moving to your side of the bed, perching beside you. “Y/N, wake up sweetheart,” he orders, more forcefully this time, shaking your shoulders a little more firmly this time.
Buck’s heart breaks as he watches helplessly, begging you once more to wake up so he can hold you, comfort you and let you know it was just a dream. You’re safe. You’re with him and not wherever your mind had been tricking you into thinking you were.
He places one hand on the side of your face, smoothing back your hair with the other as he speaks a little louder, hoping he’d finally be able to wake you. Buck sighs a breath of relief as you wake with a start a few seconds later, your chest heaving as you look around, realizing you’re in your bedroom and with him. Buck huffs as you practically collide with his body, shooting up and clutching him to you in a death grip. He feels your body shudder, hearing your soft muffled cries as you bury your head into his neck.
“Shhh, it’s okay. You’re alright. I’ve got you,” he soothes, rubbing his hand up and down your back.
You have him in such a death grip he can feel your heart beating furiously against his own chest, your breaths coming in quick as panic still has a hold of you. Buck evens out his breathing in an attempt to calm you down, “Let’s try and slow down your breathing a little, alright? Just follow me. I’ve got you.”
You eventually slow down, syncing your breaths with Buck’s and finally calming enough to pull away. Buck holds you at arms length, giving you a once over to make sure you’re okay. You can’t bring yourself to look at him, choosing to focus on your lap, fiddling with a stand of cotton on your pyjama pants. Buck dips his head, trying to get you to look at him, concern still plastered on his face. “Do you want to talk about it?”
You finally glance up at him, shaking your head. Even the thought of telling him what had happened causing tears to prick at the corner of your eyes.
“You were calling out my name,” Buck questions softly, “are you sure you don’t want to talk about it?” he asks, not wanting to push you, but also not wanting you to keep something like that buried. He knows better than most how bad keeping stuff like this to yourself can be.
“Can we just go back to sleep? Please?”
Buck nods, giving your hands one more squeeze before getting up to move back to his side of the bed. He slips under the covers, holding his arms open for you, guiding your head to rest on his chest. “If you change your mind, I’m here. Try and get some rest. Whatever happened, it was just a nightmare. It can’t hurt you. I’ve got you.”
You close your eyes, allowing the soothing feeling of Buck running his hand through your hair and his slow heartbeat to lull you to sleep.

It's absolutely against the rules.
There's a strict no fraternisation policy in place in every firehouse. It's there for a reason, after all. The city can't have all of its firefighters totally distracted because they're in love with each other.
Buck has never been one to follow the rules.
The minute he saw you, he knew he was in trouble. You cruised into the 118 with your sun kissed skin and gentle eyes and he knew there was no turning back. You flashed that million dollar smile in his direction and he could have sworn his heart skipped a beat. Yeah, he was screwed.
Little did he know, the feelings were very mutual. The first time he laughed at one of your jokes, your knees almost gave way. He looks at you like you're the only girl in the world. You feel like it, when you're with him.
At the 118, they call you Hazard. No one knows the meaning of the nickname besides Buck. Your little secret.
It came about one Friday morning shift. You weren't supposed to be working that day, but Hen called in sick, so Bobby asked you to cover. You were actually planning on going to the farmer's market, but you diverted your journey and made your way to the firehouse.
You weren't exactly dressed for work. You were wearing a pale yellow floral sundress that fell mid thigh, paired with sneakers and sunglasses. Buck took one look at you and almost passed out.
"Thank you so much for coming at such short notice. You're the best," Bobby says as you walk across the floor.
"It's no problem," you smile, making your way upstairs to grab some water.
Everyone goes back to their tasks, but Buck's eyes are glued to you. You look at him through your lashes, and he abandons cleaning the truck to run after you.
"Hey, you," he grins.
"Hey! You're in a good mood today," you wink.
"Well a pretty girl just walked into the room, so."
"Really? Where?"
You look around while laughing, and he shoves you playfully.
"You're an idiot," he chuckles.
You look at each other for a moment, before you realise what you're wearing.
"Well, I guess I better change," you tell him, turning to leave.
"Wait!"
Buck grabs your wrist and spins you back around, pulling you into him.
"Can you just give me one more minute to admire you in this dress?"
You look down at your feet, slightly taken aback by his boldness. Buck is not one to ever hold back, but he seems to with you. If only you knew it's because he's worried he'll accidentally tell you how he feels - or worse.
He uses his thumb to tilt your chin up so you're looking at him.
"You're so beautiful," he whispers, aware of the other people on the level below. "Most beautiful girl in the world."
"In the entire world?" you tease.
"Are you kidding?" he asks sincerely. "I would choose you over anyone."
He leans in without hesitation and presses a kiss to your lips. It's sweet and chaste and a promise of so much more. When he pulls away, you're both grinning like idiots.
"I've been waiting to do that since the first day I met you," he confesses.
"Well I've been waiting for you to do that since the first day you met me," you giggle.
He kisses you again quickly, before grabbing a hold of your hand.
"Wear this dress again tomorrow night."
"Tomorrow night?"
"When I take you out on a real date."
You aim a beaming smile at him, and his heart skips a beat.
"Fine, since you asked so nicely," you wink. "I can't wait."
You lean up to kiss him softly. You both can't get enough.
"If I knew that this dress is all it would take for you to ask me out, I would have worn it months ago," you laugh.
"You walked in and I thought I was gonna burst into flames. You're a fire hazard, woman."
You shove at his arm jokingly, smiling as you do it.
"Well it's a good job I'm a firefighter, huh?" you tease.
No one needs to know how you got your nickname. It's your little secret.

Subconsciously baby proofing spaces like the home and car. Anything harmful or threatening to a baby must go. - Buck x reader
When Buck returned from work after a 24 hour shift at the station he was exhausted, they’d had a lot of call outs. When he got into the apartment and found that there was an extra lock on the door, he didn’t really think anything of it. But when he went into the kitchen to get a drink of water and found that there was a lock on the fridge and one of the cabinets and he began to get suspicious. He had a hunch having baby proofed Maddie and Chimney’s place when they moved in together when Maddie was pregnant but surely his girlfriend would’ve said something by now wouldn’t she? He checks the draws to ensure his hunch was on the right track and he nods upon seeing that the sharp knives have all been placed in their own protective draw.
“Y/N?” he calls out, knowing that she would be in the middle of her morning routine
“Yeah babe?” she calls back and he says
“Can you come here please?”. He waits for her to make her way into the kitchen and she looks up from her phone
“What is it Buck?” she asks and he points to the fridge, the cabinets and the drawers
“Do you want to explain all of this babe? Is there something you want to tell me?” he asks and she looks at you and says
“Oh I had Jee-Yun over last night and wanted to make sure that she was safe” she says and you shake your head knowing that’s not the full truth
“Y/N? Jee’s almost four years old, she’s out of needing those locks on the cupboards and the fridge. What’s really going on?” you ask and you hear your girlfriend sigh before she pulls out the pregnancy test from her back pocket and hands it to you
“We’re having a baby?” you ask when you see the positive sign
“We are” she says and you beam as you place it down on the counter and rush to pick up your girlfriend and spin her around and then kiss her
“I am so happy Y/N, so happy this is happening for us” you say and she smiles placing a kiss on your cheek
“I’m happy its happening for us too Buck” she says as she moves your hands from where their resting on her waist to her tummy.

"We should go out sometime." Eddie says one day. It was another day in 118, and Eddie was spending most of his days working put. Which wasn't unusual, but this week it has been.
Ever since Buck had kissed Tommy Kinard and gone on a date with him, Eddie had been increasingly more focused on working up a sweat than anything else. Which was strange, but no stranger than Eddie's question to Y/N when he decided to join him.
"Excuse me?" Y/N asked.
"Come on, Y/N. Think about it. When's the last time we hung out?"
"Never. I hate you, Diaz, remember? You and I are bitter enemies and rivals."
"Yeah, but enemies hang out, right?" Eddie asked, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
"You know you've been acting weird ever since Buck started seeing Tommy. Wait, a minute.... you're not jealous of them, are you?" Y/N grins.
"What? No." Eddie blushed.
"You are! Admit it, Edmundo."
Eddie growled and got closer to Y/N. "It's Eddie. Stop calling me what my mom calls me."
"You know...." Y/N traced a finger over Eddie's muscular frame. "We could skip past the date and go for the fun stuff?" Y/N smiled suggestively.
Eddie looks at a loss for words.

Tumblr media
It wasn’t that things were bad…okay things were bad. It’s just they could be so much worse, they could always be worse of course but right now just seemed…bad.
You laid in Bucks bed, staring at the ceiling, it really needed to be dusted. He wasn’t one to dust, in fact he hadn’t even opened the duster you’d bought him for Valentine’s Day. It was a gag gift, the watch you’d bought was the real gift. Where was that duster anyway…maybe he-
“Looking at how dusty my roof is again?” Buck asks as he walks up the stairs, stepping around his bed to grab a hoodie off the railing
“Yeah” Is all you say, there’s more you’d like to say, about how dusty the roof is…but what’s the point in talking about it?
“I did dust the tv the other day” He says, walking over his bed, stepping over you. “You’re right I need to dust more often..”
He looks at you, the way you’re laying like a little starfish in the middle of his bed, he leans against one of the wooden supports.
“So…dust bothering you today? He asks again, watching you. You shrug your shoulders, still staring at the ceiling
“Yeah”
Buck tosses his hoodie back to where it was, laying on the bed next to you, his legs hanging off the edge, his head on your arm
“Yeah dust bothers me too” He says quietly, his hands resting on his torso.
The two of you just…lay there together for a while…watching the dust settle on the ceiling, time doesn’t start moving again until the front door opens
“Guys? You home?” Eddie calls out, setting the McDonalds bags on the counter. He shrugs off his coat, walking up the stairs to Bucks bed
“Hey, I brought lunch if you two are hungry. It’s McDonalds, like, you know if that counts as lunch. I feel like it’s like a light lunch you know?”
“McDonald’s ain’t what it used to be” Buck agrees, looking over at him. He nudges you, a small smirk forming on your lips
“You guys sound old as shit…”
Eddie rolls his eyes and Buck snickers, turning to look at you
“You realize you’re not that much younger right? Like you’re literally not”
“Yeah, I know” You say, your eyes closing softly
Eddie motions to you, his eyebrow raised, Buck points to the ceiling mouthing “dust”
“I know you’re talking about me” You say, your voice cracking just a little at the end. Tears fall down the sides of your head, but you don’t bother wiping them away
“Buck still hasn’t dusted the ceiling?” Eddie asks, looking up at it with you.
“Nope” You say and Buck shrugs
“I’m a busy guy what can I say?”
“Do you want me to do it? I know where he put the duster” He backs down a step, watching you
“I don’t know” You tell him truthfully “I think, I have to”
“We can help, you know” Buck says, looking at you as Eddie goes downstairs to grab the duster
“No, I don’t think you can” You tell him, finally looking at him for the first time in hours. He’s laid on his back, staring at you as you finally sit up, propped on one hand. He reaches up and you lay your head on his hand as he caresses your face
“We’ll always help you dust the ceiling, Dollface, you don’t have to do it alone” He tells you, looking at you as he rubs his thumb over your cheek
Eddie comes back up, handing you the duster “You do it when you’re ready. We’ll help catch anything that falls”

Meeting the Firefam
Tumblr media
Eddie x reader
~1600 words
Warnings: epileptic reader. Hopefully accurately portrayed.
You parked in front of the station and turned off the ignition. Taking one final deep breath, you pushed the door open and stepped out. You didn't know why you were so nervous. Meeting Eddie’s coworkers shouldn't seem so frightening.
What if they hated you? What if they told him to break up with you? You knew they were more like family to him than just coworkers. Their opinions mattered a lot. You had only been dating him a little over a month but you had fallen hard. You really couldn't imagine your life without him and Chris and even Carla.
You needed them to like you.
Making your way inside, you quickly spotted Eddie as he approached. You greeted him with a kiss before he pulled you into a hug.
“Hey, you. How was traffic?” He asked.
You shrugged. “Normal. Slow.” Eddie knew it was your least favorite part about LA.
“I think lunch is almost ready. You ready to meet everyone?”
“No.” You wrapped your hands around his bicep as he started walking toward the trucks.
He leaned over and kissed your temple. “I told you they’re going to love you. You have nothing to worry about.” He pulled you along with him towards Buck and another firefighter beside the truck.
Buck smiled when he spotted you. “Hey, Y/N. Glad you finally decided to come have lunch with us.”
“Hi, Buck. Someone has been persistent.” You looked at Eddie just in time to catch his shrug.
“Y/N, this is Ravi.” Eddie introduced.
Ravi lifted his hand for you to shake. “Nice to finally meet you.”
“You too.”
Eddie pulled you away towards the stairs that led to the loft. You couldn't help but look around at everything. “This is a beautiful building.”
Eddie nodded. “I agree. It's my favorite station in the city.”
You had barely made it to the top of the stairs before you were being engulfed in hugs. “Oh, uh, hi.”
Eddie chuckled. “This is Hen and Chimney.”
“We are so excited to finally meet you. Eddie here won't shut up about you,” Chimney said.
You glanced at Eddie, catching him trying to hide his blush. “I don't talk about her that much,” he argued.
“Constantly,” Hen mouthed at you with a grin.
Next, Eddie led you over to the kitchen. “And this is Cap.”
The man in front of the stove wiped his hands on a dish towel before reaching out for a handshake. “It's Bobby.”
“Nice to meet you. It smells amazing in here.”
Bobby smiled. “Well, thank you. This will be done in a few minutes. Eddie, can you grab everyone down stairs?”
“On it.” Eddie pointed to the couches. “You can make yourself comfortable over there.”
Within ten minutes, everyone was getting settled at the table. Eddie took your hand to pull you up from the couch. As he pulled out a chair for you, you suddenly felt your left arm go numb.
“Oh no.” You mumbled. You reached out towards Eddie as your knees buckled and the world around you disappeared.
Eddie was quick to catch you before you could hit the ground. “Woah. Y/N?” When you didn't open your eyes he slowly lowered you to the floor. Seconds later you were convulsing violently. Eddie couldn't help but to just stare at you in shock.
Chim was on the floor beside Eddie a second later. “Eddie, we got her.”
“I'll grab a med kit,” Hen announced as she ran for the stairs.
Chimney kept you rolled on your side. Bobby stepped closer to pull Eddie away. “They need room to work.”
Eddie tried to resist. “I should help.”
Buck stepped beside his best friend to keep him out of the way.
Bobby stepped towards you and grabbed your foot, pulling off your shoe. “Medical alert. Epilepsy.” He pointed at the shoelace tag as he looked towards Eddie.
Eddie shook his head. “I didn't know. Why didn't she tell me?”
Hen returned with a monitor and med kit and Chim filled her in. “Epilepsy. Let's just give it a minute.”
Eddie pushes past Buck and sat down on the ground by your head. He whispered soft reassurances in case you could hear him.
Chim pulled a pulse ox monitor out of the med kit and clipped it on your finger.
“She's barely breathing,” Eddie pointed out. He knew that was common with seizures but still couldn't help the mild panic he felt.
“That's normal,” Hen reminded him. She started to attach an oxygen mask to the tank she’d carried upstairs just in case.
Next, Chim started to attach cardiac leads to your chest. Once he'd finished, they waited for the seizure to stop.
“That's five minutes,” Bobby pointed out.
Hen and Chim sighed as they locked eyes with each other. “Alright, let's push Ativan,” Chim said.
“I'll start an IV,” Hen announced. “Eddie can you hold her arm?” He did as asked, trying to hold your arm as still as possible without hurting you. “I'm in.”
Chim pushed the meds he'd drawn up as soon as IV was secured. It took about another twenty seconds for the seizure to finally stop.
Everyone let out a relieved breath. Eddie pushed some hair back behind your ear.
“Let's get her loaded up and to the hospital,” Chimney broke the momentary silence.
Hen nodded. “I'll go radio dispatch and get ready.”
Within five minutes you were loaded into the ambulance with Eddie and Chim beside you as Hen shifted into drive.
“Ugh.” You groaned a few minutes later. “N-no hospital,” you mumbled out fighting your grogginess.
Eddie ran his hand over your head. “Yes, hospital.”
You huffed, frustrated you can't get the words out to explain. “E-epi–”
“We know about your epilepsy, we found your alert tag,” Eddie interrupted. “Sweetheart, your seizure lasted almost six minutes. Hen and Chim had to push meds to stop it. You have to go in.”
Your eyebrows rose in surprise. Suddenly you were glad you'd been with them for lunch and not alone at home. You knew he was right and allowed yourself to relax. “Tired.”
Eddie pressed a kiss to your knuckles. “That's the medicine. You can sleep.”
You nodded as your eyes drifted closed. You weren't sure you could have stayed awake even if you'd tried.
A few hours later, you were finally settled into a room after being poked and prodded. They had run all kinds of tests trying to figure out what might have caused the long seizure.
“Anything I can get for you?” the nurse asked.
You shook your head as you shifted in an attempt to find a comfortable position. Every muscle was sore.
“Okay. I'll let your visitors know they can come in now, if that's alright with you,” the nurse says as she walks toward the door.
“Visitors? Plural?” You ask surprised.
“You have a whole herd of firefighters waiting out there for you,” she explains.
“Oh, wow. Could you just send Eddie in for now?”
She smiles kindly. “Of course, honey.”
Eddie pushes the door open not five minutes later. He pulls up a chair and takes your hand in his, careful to avoid your IV line.
“Hi,” you greeted
“Hi. How ya feeling?” He asked.
“Kinda like someone put me through a blender.”
He chuckled and nodded. “You scared me. I'm just glad Bobby noticed your medical alert tag.”
“I'm sorry,” you sighed. “This is definitely not how I planned to tell you about my epilepsy.”
He locks eyes with you. “So you were planning to tell me.” He looks annoyed or maybe hurt that you hadn't already told him.
“Eventually.” You drop your gaze to the bed. “It's not exactly an easy conversation. It's caused a few break ups over the years.”
“What do you mean?” He looks genuinely confused.
“I'm too much to deal with. No one wants to deal with seizures,” you try to explain. “And you already have to deal with sick people all day at work. I'm sure the last thing you want to do is deal with the same at home.” You sniffle. “I'll understand if you want out now.”
“Y/N,” Eddie said, placing a finger under your chin to make you look at him. “I love you. This could never change that. Any guy who dumped you because of this is an asshole.”
Tears rolled down your face before you were suddenly sobbing, relief washing over you in waves.
Eddie moved quickly to sit beside you on the bed. Pulling you into his side and shishing you softly.
You had been so worried about telling him for so long. “I-I'm sorry. I should have told you.” You sniffled harshly. “I should have known you'd accept this part of me.”
“You have nothing to apologize for. I know now. That's all that matters.”
Eventually you calmed down but you were beyond exhausted. “Hey, isn't everyone still out there waiting?”
“Yeah.” He pulled his phone out of his pocket. “I'll text them that you're okay and let them know they can head home.”
Placing a hand over his screen, you shook your head. “No. I want to see them.”
“You need to rest,” he argued. “They can come back tomorrow or we can go to the station if you're discharged.”
“Just a quick visit. Please? Fifteen minutes.”
Sighing, he stood from where he was still perched on the bed. “Ten.”
“Deal.”

Relationship Reveal | Buck
Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Pairing: Buck/Little Sister Diaz!Reader ♡ Genre: Relationship Reveal, Fluff ♡ Word Count: 1k ♡ Warnings: None ♡ Summary: You finally tell your big brother who you’ve been dating. ♡ Note: Day 8 of my 30 Day Writing Challenge!
Tumblr media
Buck shifted in the seat next to you, his fingers thrumming the white table cloth as he took another sip of his margarita with the other. He had ordered it the moment the waitress came over, saying he needed liquid courage.
Yet, since the two of you got here nearly ten minutes ago he hadn’t been able to relax at all. You hoped he would be more comfortable, especially since you picked his favorite place for lunch. It was a small Italian restaurant that the two of you loved having dinner at.
“Baby, take a breath, everything is going to be okay,” you reminded him, placing your hand on his leg reassuringly.
“You don’t know that,” Buck said with a sigh, looking back at you.
“I do, all we’re doing is meeting Eddie for lunch. You’ve had lunch with him hundreds of times,” you said as you took a sip of your water before placing it back down.
“Yeah, I’ve also never had to tell him that I’ve been dating his precious little sister behind his back over lunch.”
You rolled your eyes at that, “precious little sister? I’m a twenty-five-year-old woman. Eddie has no say over who I date or don’t. Besides, it hasn’t been behind his back. We just decided to wait and tell him till we knew this was serious.”
It was true. Buck and Eddie were close, so you hadn’t wanted to tell your brother until you were sure it was serious. It had been a whirlwind two months of romance between you and the blue-eyed firefighter, making you certain he was the one for you.
He meant the world to you. Nobody had ever treated you with such love, care, and concern. Which is why you were so relaxed about telling Eddie. Sure, he might find it awkward at first, but once he saw how happy Buck made you, it would be fine.
“I know, but what if he doesn’t see it like that? Ever since I met him he’s talked about you and how he loves you so much. He’s still your protective big brother.” He grumbled as he placed his hand over yours, caressing it softly.
You smiled at that, loving how worried Buck was being towards Eddie’s feelings. It showed you how considerate he was. You leaned forward, placing a chaste kiss on his lips and cupping his cheek.
“Listen, I know he’s going to be fine with it and if he’s not then we’ll go from there. Regardless, I want to be with you. So, trust me okay?”
Buck nodded, his eyes hooded as relaxed under your soft touch, “I love you so much.”
“I love you too. Now all you have to do is tell my brother that.”
Buck groaned at that, pulling away from you just as the restaurant door jingled.
He froze, knowing that meant Eddie had arrived, while you laughed, turning around in your seat to wave at your brother as he walked in.
Your brother looked relaxed, wearing a gray shirt with blue jeans as he came over and sat in the chair in front of you.
“Hey guys,” he said with a smile, his eyes flickering between the two of you. “Hope I didn’t keep you waiting long.”
“Of course not, we just got here,” you said easily, glancing at Buck who was looking anywhere but Eddie.
“Cool, so… why did y’all wanna have lunch?” Eddie wondered aloud, as he looked over the menu.
“No reason. Why would you think there was a reason?” Buck said, his voice much higher than normal.
Eddie raised an eyebrow. “Well, the text message said ‘we need to tell you something’, so I assumed?”
Buck opened his mouth to reply to that, then seemed to think better of it and looked over to you with a look that said please help me.
You shook your head, knowing Buck wouldn’t be able to relax until you spilled the beans. You just needed to tell Eddie. You took a deep breath and let it all out.
“Look Ed’s, we know this may come as a surprise to you, but Buck and I are together. We have been for a few months now and we decided now was the time to tell you.”
The silence that followed your confession was tense. Buck seemed ready to bolt out of his chair at any second whilst Eddie’s face was unreadable.
Neither of you were expecting what happened next.
Your brother let out a laugh as he leaned back in his chair, clapping his hands. “Congrats! It’s about damn time y’all told me. I was beginning to think you two would get married before I knew.”
Wait, what? Mentally, you racked your brain, trying to figure out he could have found out, but came up with nothing.
“You knew this entire time?” Buck said incredulously, his mouth agape, “How?”
Eddie shrugged. “I mean I’m not sure when exactly you two started seeing each other, but I’ve noticed things lately. The lovesick glances, the way you're always together, how much happier you both seem lately. It wasn’t hard to connect the dots.”
“And you’re not mad about it?” Buck pressed.
“Of course not, you are both adults and I know my sister can handle herself. I figured you would come to me when you were ready.”
“Oh Eddie, I really appreciate that,” you said with a warm smile with your brother returned.
Truthful, you were a bit worried he wouldn’t take it well, so this was a weight off your shoulders. The last thing you would want would be to upset him.
“Oh thank god,” Buck muttered, his shoulders slumping in relief. “I was so worried you would be mad.”
Eddie simply chuckled, “no man, you’re good. Just treat her right and we won’t have any issues. Treat her badly and that’ll be another story.”
“I respect that,” Buck said with a nod. “Well, now that’s over with… Can we eat? I need to eat something after all this worrying.”
“Yeah, let’s do it,” and with that, the two of them started chatting about what to get.
Nothing seemed different between them at all.
All you could do was smile and watch them, happy that your boyfriend and your brother got along so well.

"I can't believe you actually talked us into this." Eddie said with a sigh and shake of his head.
"Come on it'll be fun." Buck said cheerfully as he pulled flashlights out of his backpack and began passing them out.
"I don't know if I would classify walking around an old abandoned hospital as fun." Hen said as she leaned against the car.
"You all said you weren't really feeling the holiday spirit right? This'll help."
"Yeah, it'll help me have nightmares." You mumbled from beside Eddie, who smiled down at you in amusement.
You looked around the area, eyeing the tall trees scattered around. You had driven nearly thirty minutes out of the city to get here, and the sun was setting quicker than you liked.
"And you're certain we're not trespassing Buck?" Athena said with a pointed look at him.
You were surprised she even showed up, but you had an underlying feeling it was because she was worried something bad might happen.
He nodded his head "A friend owns the property, trust me, he said it was fine we were here tonight."
"Maybe Buck's right, we all need a little holiday spirit." Bobby spoke.
He was the obvious skeptic, but man, did that man love a team bonding exercise.
"Don't people usually say that about Christmas?" Chimney asked
Buck handed him a flashlight "You need Halloween spirit too. Okay, come on."
Turning on the flashlight Buck gave you as you all headed into the large building, you looped your arm through Eddie's.
Looking around the lobby of the building, it gave off an eerie feeling. Old chairs littered the room, some toppled over, some broken. It was cold, and dark, and every footstep echoed down the nearby hall.
"Creepy." You muttered as a chill ran down your spine.
As you walked past the lobby and into the old emergency room, you eyed an old hospital bed, sheet's still present, but covered in a dark rusty stain.
"Why did this place shut down again?" You asked softly, feeling goosebumps cover your arms.
"And when? This place looks ancient." Hen added on.
"It was shut down in the 50's due to a bunch of patients dying in odd circumstances. Also a lot of patients went missing."
"Excuse me?" Athena asked with raised interest "There better me more to that story."
"Oh yeah. Three doctors ended up confessing to murdering a bunch of patients. They did experiments on them and everything."
"What the-"
Hen's sentence was cut off as a loud bang sounded from the floor above you. You flinched, gripping your flashlight tightly in one hand, and Eddie's arm in the other.
"Okay guys, be careful, there could be squatters here." Bobby said, voice filled with concern.
"Or ghosts." Buck added.
"Don't worry, I've got my taser on me." Athena said
"How would that help with ghosts?" Buck looked over at her.
She rose her brow at him, and he shrugged "Seriously?"
"What?"
"It may not help with ghosts, but it'll sure as hell, help with some real madman who might attack us." She said with a tone that already said she was done with Buck.
"Oh, yeah. Right."
You scoffed in amusement, as you looked around. As your eyes cast over a nearby room, you jumped as you thought you saw something dart away from the door.
"What?" Eddie asked, causing the others to look over.
"I thought I saw something in there." You pointed your flashlight into the door, while speaking softly.
Athena walked over, quickly pushing open and the door and peaking in.
She looked at you and shook her head "Nothing."
"Or something." Evan said.
Yours and Athena's head snapped towards him as she shrugged "What? Could be!"
"You okay?" Eddie whispered to you.
You nodded as you tore our eyes away from the empty room, your heart pounding. "Yeah, it was probably just my shadow."
Eddie could hear the doubt in your tone, he squeezed your arm lightly as you continued to walk through the hospital.
Your whole group came to a sudden halt when you heard the clear sound of conversation coming from down the hall. As you stopped and listened the voices ceased.
"Those were definitely voices."
"Are you sure there aren't homeless people here?" Chimney asked as he and Hen clung to one another.
"My friend said they never get people in here anymore. It's too scary for even homeless people to stay in."
"That's comforting" You muttered.
Creeping closer, you approached the cafeteria, the room the voices came from.
As Buck peaked in, he looked back at you, clearly shaken. Pushing open the door, he spoke "There's no one in here."
As you all entered into the room, you looked around. A few tables and chairs remained, some papers and trash scattered on the floor.
"This is definitley where the voices were coming from." Bobby said, and you noted the uneasiness of his tone.
"Is anyone here with us?" Buck asked aloud.
"What are you doing?!" Hen asked with bewilderment.
Buck looked over at her and raised his arms "What? I'm communicating."
"Could you not?" Chimney said in a monotone voice.
"It's why we're here dude."
"You said we were gonna check out a creepy hospital, not go ghost hunting Buck." Eddie said.
Hearing shuffling footsteps coming from the hall, you all turned with surprise. Your breath hitched in your throat as you and Eddie stepped back, further away from the doors.
Athena stepped forward, shining her light through the window.
The footsteps got louder and louder before they stopped just outside the cafeteria doors. As Bobby and Athena pushed the doors open and looked down the hall they stared with clearly shocked faces.
"There's no one, right?" Buck asked, a small amount of smugness in his tone.
Athena and Bobby looked in at you all and you could tell from their faces, that Buck was right.
"I hate this." You said sotly.
Eddie nodded "Me too." He leaned down a bit "But I got you, okay?"
You nodded softly as he pressed a soft kiss to your temple.
"Okay, let's go." Buck said as he headed towards the hall.
"Where are you going now?" Eddie asked with obvious exasperation.
"Upstairs?"
You all sang out a chorus of no's, and no way's, and Buck pouted. "Come on guys! We came all the way out here."
Chimney sighed and shook his head "Fine, I'll go, but just because I know if no one does, you'll go by yourself."
"Yeah, okay, you two go have fun, we'll stay down here." Hen said with a determined voice.
"I'll go too, who knows what trouble you two might get into up there." Bobby said as he followed Chimney and Buck towards the staircase.
"Yeah, I'm staying right here." Hen said as she sat down at one of the tables.
You let out a along breath as you looked around the dark and creepy cafeteria.
"Come on." Eddie said as he lead you to sit down as well.
"What could lead doctors to do such horrible things to their patients?" You asked after a few moments of eerie silence.
Hen shook her head "Evil people who think they can become Gods."
Hearing a thud from the furthest side of the cafeteria, you all flinched, shining your lights around. Seeing nothing, you all let out breaths. You weren't sure if it was better to see something, or nothing, neither option was great.
You held onto Eddie's arm a little bit tighter as your eyes darted around the room.
After nearly twenty minutes, and too many unexplained noises, you all began to grow antsy.
"Alright, I'm gong to go get them, it's been too damn long." Athena said as she stood.
You all stood as well, knowing it was best you all went together. As you walked out into the hallway, you stopped and listening, hearing nothing.
"Its way too quiet in here." Hen mumbled.
As you all walked towards the staircase, your hand was tight in Eddie's. You felt your chest clenched tightly as your heart refused to slow down.
"AHHH"
You all yelled out in fear and surprise as Buck and Chimney jumped down from the staircase yelling.
After a chorus of insults and yelling, Buck and Chimney chuckled and rose up their hands "Sorry, sorry, couldn't help it."
Bobby came down from behind them, shaking his head, but clearly repressing a laugh. Athena have him a pointed look and he raised his hands up and shrugged.
"You guys wont believe what happened up there." Buck began.
"Oh my God, honestly it was so creepy."
"And I got it all on camera! Voices, banging, a door opened by itself. Even Bobby couldn't explain any of it."
You all looked at Bobby who shrugged "I honestly can't."
"That's great, I'm so happy for you, you had an experience. Can we leave now?" Hen said, with clear frustration.
"Aw come on, just a little longer" Buck asked.
As you all opened your mouths to protest, you all froze, hearing a loud squeaking coming from further down the hall. As all your heads turned, you looked down the darkened hallway, as the squeaking got louder.
From an open doorway, you all watched with bated breaths as an empty wheelchair rolled out into the hallway, turning to face you all, before stopping. All your mouths were agape, as your hearts were beating heavy and fast.
"Aw, hell no." Athena muttered. "What the fu-" Chimney began. "Nope." You said as you tugged Eddies arm.
Getting exactly what you wanted, he began backing away. Patting Buck on the arm, he nodded "Sorry Buck, you can stay if you want, but we're leaving."
"I second that."
"Yeah, screw this."
Buck watched as all of you began quickly rushing to leave before he glanced at the wheelchair one more time, before turning to follow all of you, yelling out "That was awesome!"

What type of bf do you think Buck would be?
Boyfriend
In short, a sweet, carings, romantic man who goes above and beyond to make sure you know how much he loves you because he is afraid of being left. He likes to make it known you are his.
In long:
It had been a long day at work. You turn the key to the apartment you and Buck share. As you open the door you see the table set with candles. The lights are dimmed and you can hear music playing. You walk in with a smile. Buck turns from the stove and smiles at you.
“Whats all this?” You ask.
“Well when we talked earlier I could tell you we’re having a tough day so I figured this would help” he said wrapping his arms around you, then leaning in for a kiss.
“Now go get comfortable and Ill finish up here” he said sending you in the direction of the stairs.
You take a nice hot shower. You throw on a nice maxi dress that hugs you in all the right places that you know Buck loves. You throw your hair up into a perfect “messy bun”. You make your way downstairs just as Buck is setting the table with food.
“Wow you look” he said grabbing you by the waist and kissing you, “beautiful”
He pulls out your chair and helps you scoot in. He takes his seat.
“Buck this is all so perfect” you said.
The two of you discussed you day as you ate. Buck just watched as you told him everything. The way he looked at you made you feel like you were the only girl in the world.
“I was shopping today and saw this and I just knew you would love it.” He said, coming back to the table with a bag.
You take the bag and open it. Its a beautiful soft blanket.
“Oh Buck this is so beautiful and soft” you said hugging the blanket and squealing, “thank you”
“Theres more” he grinned
In the bottom of the bag was a small box. You pulled it out and opened it. You gasped.
“Oh Evan it’s beautiful” you pull out a charm bracelet with 3 charms on it, a firefighter hat with two axes, a heart that has your initals and a E for Evan, and a apples since you are a teacher.
“I’m glad you like it” he said helping you put it on.
He slowly pushes the hair out of your face. You kiss his hand as his lowers it.
You stand up and motion to upstairs.
“I’ve got to clean all this up” he says. You grab his hand and pull him.
“We can get it later. Right now some thing else needs to be done” you say.
Another instance of Buck being an amazing boyfriend.
You got home from work late which meant Buck had already left for his over night shift. You hated it when you two missed each other.
You drop you bags at the door and kick off your shoes. You see a note on the counter. You smile a little. You walk over and read it.
“Hey babe, I’m sorry I missed you. I hope you had a great day, I love you” you smiled as you read it.
You went upstairs to take a shower. Thats when you spotted a box on the bed. You open it to find a beautiful red dress and with a note saying “I saw this and thought of you”
