Year-End Poll #60: 2009
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift, Flo Rida, Jason Mraz, Beyoncé, Kanye West, The All-American Rejects. End description]
More information about this blog here
Apparently something happened this year involving 3 of the artists on this poll...
Anyway, last poll I talked about the 2008 financial crisis and now more than ever we can see the effects the Great Recession were having on popular music. Upbeat party music provided listeners with a feeling of escape. The Black Eyed Peas shifted their style from hip-hop to a more electropop sound, leading to the groups commercial peak. Songs like Lady Gaga's Just Dance presented lyrics about having a good time despite everything falling apart. Musically, the latter half of the decade was defined by electropop. To quote James Oldham, the head of A&R at A&M Records at the time:
"All A&R departments have been saying to managers and lawyers: 'Don't give us any more bands because we're not going to sign them and they're not going to sell records.' So everything we've been put on to is electronic in nature." (x)
Even outside of pop music, the rising popularity of the electronic sound and online distribution allowed musicians easier access to production tools and audiences. According to Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit, the electronic sound allowed him to make music while still living in his dorm. While not obvious now, this small-scale "bedroom pop" sound will become even more prevalent in the following decade.
Another staple of this sound is the increasing popularity of Auto-Tune. We already discussed its use with artists like T-Pain, but Kanye West's use of the plugin on 808s & Heartbreak is also notable. Instead of using the vocal effect as the backbone for a party track, here Auto-Tune is used to convey the coldness of the lyrical content. While incredibly controversial, this album would be a huge influence over the genre. And when we look at the direction rap starts to head in the coming decades, the changes in the genre don't make sense without bringing up this album.
And with that, the 2000's have come to a close and we are finally reaching the next full decade of these polls.

Is your music all digitally composed or is it acoustic and you record? Curious about your process.
I use Ableton Live to mix and compose everything, but depending on the track I use both digital/virtual sounds and real instruments, either recorded through my microphone (connected to an usb interface), electric guitar and bass I sometimes recore directly by connecting through the input cable, and sometimes I just sample random phone recordings I do.
But yeah it depends on the song - like for "Amber Chamber Theme" it was mostly directly recording from a keyboard I had avaible at the moment, then using pitch shifted or otherwise manipulated vocals at some parts.
For "The Gal that fell out of da sun" I just mostly recorded everything with my microphone connected to a preamp and usb interface - so it was all acoustic guitar, vocals and just hitting random things for drums😂. On it I used the Guitarrig plugin to give it the sound of guitar pedals, but I actually like to use that on a lot of shit, can give audio tracks easy effects that sound good atleast to my own ears.
So yeah, dunno if this is coherent or just too rambely, but in short - it depends, but at the end I basically use Ableton either way - I think many years ago I tried Fruity Loops, didnt know what I was doing and quit😂 Then some classmate recomended Ableton and I sticked with that. Maybe I'll try something else in the future.
Oh, and if you ment my process in a more abstract way, like composing or the idea for a song - for the last few tracks it was mostly the idea of fitting with the whole desert/western theme, so I would either noodle with a guitar to find a sound I like, or think of a fitting genre that I could parody that would fit. Sometimes I kinda come up with some lyricsl Idea first but yeah. But other items I just fuck around in Ableton till I see something comes together, that maybe if everyone else thinks sounds horrible, I like😂
And yeah lyrics I'll admit was one factor were I'm kinda lazy on this "project" - sometimes I try to write down some, but mostly I go of the dome and even sometimes mumble in a way with it not even making sense (other times I know I said something but cant make it out anymore, like in the Phonk song I did, but I guess thats the point)
I justify it by saying that the orignal anime had a lot of broken english so its just fitting with the theme😂. But maybe I'm too harsh, some of the lyrics were pretty planned out and do have a lot of consious meaning. Like one of my older songs which was like a parody of one of Ye's tracks from "808's and heartbreaks" were it was supposed to be from Kids perspective in a pathetic emo rap autotune voice lamenting how "now even 8's I hate, two circles with no escape"😱💀
So yeah, dunno, wrote a lot more than anyone probably asked for. Could probably say more, but I'll leave that for other asks.

Lil Shine - Lovesick
(PluggnB, Pop Rap, Trap)
On his latest EP, Lil Shine’s candied cloud rap throws in more rock guitars and lush orchestration, his melodic flow given a little more space to breathe. Lovesick’s playful PluggnB hasn’t changed much from his debut, but it’s the little things that make all the difference.
☆☆☆☆
Underground trap’s idiosyncrasies often make for some of the wildest listens, and that’s especially the case for Minneapolis’ Lil Shine. With dozens of singles and his SH!NE and Heavenly Ascension mixtapes establishing his presence prior to his debut album Losing Myself, his nasally vocals and sugary plugg beats had already found their sweet spot, making the album one of last year’s strangest and loveliest listens. But, like before, his music had to continue expanding, his latest mixtape Lovesick throwing rock guitars and lush orchestration, his melodic flows given a little more space to breathe while the music stays as energetic and boastful as ever. It shares all its main characteristics with Shine’s previous releases, and Lovesick is all the better for it, a second helping of Losing Myself addictive PluggnB with just enough new flavors thrown in to make it distinct and exciting to hear.
Fitting to its name, Lovesick features more romantic arrangements replete with swooning strings and warm piano leads, distorted drum programming and synth chord progressions still here but driven by a softer spirit. Mistakes opens up with a grand piano progression and gentle strings before the beat kicks in, Shine’s midtempo flow letting him slowly work out tangled feelings towards a breakup, while the title track interpolates its melody from Paramore’s Stop This Song (Lovesick Melody) (even playing a bit of the song as the song fades out) to harness some of that bitter, heartbroken pop rock energy into a hazy cloud rap cut. The obvious heavy hitter is Jeans Soaked, a massive second half highlight pushed by a winding electric guitar and triumphant horns for one of his best hooks to date (I haven’t stopped humming “I spilled wockhardt on my jeans, now my jeans soaked!” for weeks now), but the surrounding song’s lighter presence makes for a good balance, Too Much’s 8-bit synth leads and the smooth guitar solo in One Last Time subtle but lovely changes to Shine’s sound that don’t mess with the form of his songs. It’s some of the best rap this year, and all of its weirdness only makes it better. Lovesick’s playful PluggnB hasn’t changed much from his debut, but it’s the little things that make all the difference. Leaner and more diverse in its sound, it makes a wonderful follow-up to Losing Myself with some new twists, taking on the sharper edges of rock and pop punk and sprinkling it around the usual bassy 808’s and synth leads. Still tapping into the possibilities of PluggnB and how far he can stretch its limits, Lil Shine’s music continues to be as fun as ever with all the weirdness and creativity those early Soundcloud releases got so much traction from. Lovesick may be about heartbreak, but it’s the most lovable and exciting music from Lil Shine yet, bittersweet alt-rap in all the right ways.

A Better Kanye West?
Kanye has always been known to stick with a Kanye type beat but with this album he decided to change all that. With the album being called “808’s & Heartbreaks” he dedicated the whole album to be a 808 beat.

In my personal opinion I really saw what Kanye West tried to do with the album, and by no means I think it’s a bad album but compared to a lot of his albums it was mid. I think the execution just wasn’t there on a Kanye West level.

for the music ask thing, how about 13 & 20 :)
13. One of your favorite 80's songs
Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane
I thank guitar hero for this ✌️😁
20. A song that has many meanings to you
Don't Say You Will
I hate Kanye West for obvious reasons, but 808's and Heartbreak helped me get through a rough break up when I was younger. But now I have Charli XCX instead so that album is just mixed feelings. I still like it though just not as much.

Drake find your love lyrics song
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below, find our picks for the most sensitive Drake lyrics. 4 2 The song received positive reviews, with critics commending Drakes attempt at moving into the singing lane, and comparing it to its producer, Kanye West s work on 808s & Heartbreak. Sidebar: Drake says Find Your Love is a huge risk. 'Find Your Love' is a dancehall-leaning R&B song that contains a 'traditional soulful R&B vibe' with 'a Jamaican beat'. Post midnight leaks are bad for business. It’s produced by Kanye West and second single off his debut Thank Me Later, which by the way, is finished. This Kanye West-produced track finds the rapper singing about what he describes as. Through it all, the 6 God let his heart lead the way. New Music: Drake Find Your Love (CDQ) This is the song Drake shot a video for in Jamaica. Find Your Love is the second single from his debut album, Thank Me Later. Wheelchair spokes gave way to barbells the walking meme became the best rapper alive through sheer force of will and internet savvy. Over the last ten years, the Degrassi alum has transformed hip-hop and R&B into a Toronto-sized soap opera. See all 7 versions of the song Find Your Love 2010 debut album from the Canadian Hip Hop sensation and Lil Wayne protg. What happens when rap’s resident man-child is thrust into fatherhood-and can the absence of one type of love ever be filled by another? Finally, Scorpion presented a new question and narrative arc. By the time If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and Views came along, the emoting became colder Drizzy’s heart was shielded by inches of muscle fiber and creatine. On Take Care, he’d hone the melancholy into a sharper, petty edge. Starting with 2009’s So Far Gone, Drake built a world of a consistent heartbreak cut by momentary bliss. Within the OVO head honcho, humanity sees its modern reflection.ĭrake albums are time capsules of failed relationships that were never our fault. Listeners don’t come to Drizzy for emotional maturity and promises of blissful marriage they want Drake to make their shortcomings seem mundane.

Every move has a machine-like precision and intent. He raps the way we tweet, curating his image as if it’s a second language he’s been fluid in since birth. The best Drake songs have a unique brand of narcissism, jealousy, and emotive longing. For the last decade, the Toronto rapper has simplified the intricacies of the human condition in a world constantly shifting with the ebbs and flow of new technologies. Aubrey Graham is merely an average man blessed with an extraordinary gift. Drake isn’t overly emotional, hypersensitive, or uniquely fragile.
