Thank Crunchie it’s Friday
PEOPLE from a certain era will know all about the Thank Crunchie it’s Friday phrase. If you’re unfamiliar with the phrase then here’s the explanation: it means being overwhelmed with excitement for making it to Friday… waking up with a Cheshire Cat smile, being filled with happiness that’s on par with celebrating a major birthday, the relief of making it through four whole days and now the…

Tim is part of the LAPD according to his detective badge (Los Angeles Police Department). His badge number appears to be either 2316 or 2516 when zoomed in, however the image is blurry to confirm either way 100%.
Tim is softly spoken with a grizzly cadence to his American accent.
Objects seen on Tim's desk include a small black bound notebook, evidence bags and photographs, his name plaque, a radio walkie-talkie, pencil pot, evidence numbers, keyboard and desk tidy, keys and a telephone
The total length of Pedro's seen screen time as Tim, across all 3 adverts, is approximately 48 seconds.
In late February 2024, the official Merge Mansion Youtube Channel & Instagram page, removed all of the adverts starring Pedro as Tim Rockford off their platforms. This is more than likely because his contract with Merge Mansion advertising has come to an end, and usually when this happens, the brand (the game in this case) will remove them ready for a new advertising campaign.
Tumblr media
Fashion/Outfits:
Outfits - Tim wears a white dress shirt with sleeves rolled up to his mid-arms, with dark brown slacks and a black leather belt with simple silver buckle design. He appears to be wearing a white tank top/vest undershirt/wifebeater under his shirt. He wears dark black shoes and a mid-length beige/tan trench coat. ..It's an uncharted sea, it's an unopened door, But you gotta reach out and you gotta explore...
For the very first time, by Robin Beck released in 1989 but I’m sure that many will remember it from the 1988 Coca-Cola Tv ad.
Every day in life is like exploring and  just like in the song you gotta reach out and try new things. Who else remembers the advert from back in the 80′s? I certainly do, I remember it being really popular and reaching no.1 in the charts for 3 weeks.
So... here’s another outfit from my stay in Olverston. I’m feeling like everything I buy at the moment is red but I just feel that red is MY colour haha. The dress is by Little Mistress and was lovely, I always think that one shoulder dresses might be a bit of a risk with my shoulders but I didn’t think it was too bad. I think I won it on ebay for £4.50... BARGAIN!
Hope you like the set....     Cassi   Xx.    :-)

The actor Peter Blake was born on December 8th 1948 in Selkirk.
Tumblr media
Unless you are a fan of the John Sullivan comedy, Dear John, you might not have heard of Peter Blake. Peter described himself as “the man who was nearly famous three times”, those occasions being for the sitcoms Dear John and Agony and a series of TV advertisements for Pepsi in the mid-1970s.
Born as John Beattie Dempsey his parents must have been proud Scots, they always referred to him as Ian. For those that are unaware Ian is the Scottish Gaelic term for John in return he termed them “a Border Maiden” and “a Scottish Soldier”.
Although the family moved south to Worcestershire when he was young, they returned home often on visits, most often during the Selkirk Common Riding in June.
After failing to make it as pop star Blake trained at what is now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in Glasgow, he made his debut in Frank Dunlop’s production of The Winter’s Tale at the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, in 1966). Three years later saw him as a “Stage Manager – not a part!” in strip clubs in Soho, before an Amsterdam production of Hair led to its West End version at the Shaftesbury. Pharaoh in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar, followed, he was however most well known on stage for playing Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show over a thousand times between 1975 and 1994.
Tumblr media
While his bread and butter was on the stage Peter made appearances in some well known shows through the years including, in the 70's Minder, Shoestring and Z Cars, he was also in all episodes of the Sitcom Agony as smarmy radio disc jockey Andy Evol. During the 80's he was in Murphy's Mob, Shine on Harvey Moon and Just Good Friends, it was also in the 80's he appeared in one of my fave sitcoms, Dear John as the resplendent Kirk St Moritz, dressed in white suit, big collars and golden medallion.
During the 90's he was in four episodes of the Scottish sitcom City Lights with the late great Gerard Kelly, as well as several episodes of Smith and Jones, in the new millenium, like every other self respected Scottish actor, he was in Taggart as well as the Bill and four episodes of Eastenders. Peter also appeared and sang in an advert for Pepsi Cola.
Peter Blake passed away on July 21st 2018 aged 69.

Above is a local newspaper article / advert for a live version of the Muppet Show, which ran in late 1986 at the now-demolished Wembley Conference Centre in London. Whether the venue was chosen due to the way its name reminded people of Fraggle Rock is unknown. (/s)
Anyway, I attended this on one of the dates listed - I have a feeling it might have been before Christmas. My dad only took me along - my younger sister was still too young at the time to attend. We went as part of a special booked party for the employees (and employee's children) of Rank Xerox, which was based in Uxbridge in North London.
Tumblr media
That's a photo of the front of Wembley Conference Centre there, taken at an unknown date. (I took it from Wikipedia.) I have a memory of all of us (employees and other kids) gathering in the car park in the sodium-lit winter evening dusk before we went in.
I remember there was a party beforehand held for us Rank Xerox people in one of the smaller conference rooms, and one of the pre-show "entertainments" laid on for us was a clown. I did not like the clown, but not because of the usual obvious reason. I've always viewed clowns more as tiresome nuisances rather than Brothers Of Pennywise.
Rather, I didn't like him because this clown's makeup reminded me too much of a clown I saw in an episode of The Avengers - not the Marvel Comics one, but this entirely different thing from 60s / 70s UK TV that everyone's forgotten - where both that clown and everyone else at a party died of bizarro germ warfare due to some James Bond-esque megalomaniac or something. I was faintly concerned that I was going to die of every disease ever, like in that episode, but there was a child-friendly buffet available so I quickly pushed it out of my mind. Incidentally, in that Avengers episode I think the scene afterwards went something like:
STEED: So, Doctor, what did the guests die of? SCIENTIST: Everything. STEED: What? That's impossible! How could they have died of everything? SCIENTIST: They died of measles, the common cold, typhoid, malaria, smallpox... and every other disease known to man. As I said, everything.
...Yes, us 80s kids really did see some mad shit on TV, even if it was from the 60s.
During this party we got to have our photos taken with one of the Muppets. As you might have figured out from the top picture, these were full sized costumes worn by actors. They sort of mimed to specially pre-recorded dialogue from Jim Henson, Frank Oz, etc, while on stage. The one Muppet who didn't have to talk was this janitor character who I can't remember the name of, and I assume that was the Muppet they chose for the photo op, as so not to break the illusion. For years we had a big framed picture of a grinning young me sat on the lap of this giant Muppet, next to my school photos. It's since vanished and I have no idea where it's gone. Maybe Oscar The Grouch nicked it.
As part of the merch we picked up at the show, my Dad bought me one of these things, which I think were relatively new at the time. I also got a felt flag thing of Kermit.
...And that's what Auntie Michelle did in London, about 36 years ago.
(The newspaper cutting came from the British Newspaper Archive, and the paper it was taken from was the Harrow & Northwood Informer, October 30th 1986.)

CKBW-FM
Tumblr media
"The sound of the South Shore"
Moving onto a larger station which nonetheless carries on the tradition established so far on this blog of radio stations not chasing after "popular" music or trends, this is CKBW-FM. (This trend will be broken in due time). Getting right into things across the ocean, as I learned when listening live, CKBW is a commercial radio station owned and operated as part of a network by Acadia Broadcasting. It's located and broadcasts in Nova Scotia, Canada, but also broadcasts on different frequencies to Bridgewater and Shelburne nearby. Its formatting is that of a classic hits-dedicated adult station, aimed at a target audience likely to be 50+, especially with how old some of the songs played can be (as will be detailed later). CKBW brands itself as playing classic hits from the 70's, 80's and 90's, further supporting this. It was established all the way back in 1947 and is still running today, hinting at a loyal following and a level of success codified by their 19K following on Facebook.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CKBW has an online presence with their own website, as well as accounts on Twitter and Facebook, though they do not post especially often on either. The website updates with local news from the Nova Scotia area pretty often, showing that the radio station's scope extends beyond just their radio broadcasts.
This focus on Nova Scotia exists within the actual show itself, so let's get into show structure. I listened to CKBW on Tuesday 26 December 2023, between 2-3PM AST, and was treated to the drivetime show with "Drive Home with John Wiles". Presenter John Wiles had several links sprinkled throughout the show about a minute long each, but he had a way of packing a lot of info or content into each link despite the shortened time. These links were either conversational, posing various questions to viewers that could be answered by texting in, or featured talk about whatever is topical at the time- in this instance, of course, subjects surrounding Christmas and the upcoming new year. The branding of the show as a classic hits station comes through quite effectively- every tune I listened to, be it Take on Me by A-ha (1985), Doesn't really matter by Platinum Blonde (1983), Dream On by Aerosmith (1973) or Two Princes by Spin Doctors (1991) were hit tunes that came out between 1970 and 2000, exactly as advertised by the station itself. It stays true to its principles without variation, and does have some Canadian music artists (like aforementioned Platinum Blonde) included.
Despite not all the artists played on the station being Canadian, CKBW still manages to retain a local feel due to regularly featuring weather updates for the Nova Scotia area quarterly across the hour, and advertisements on the station regularly feature businesses in the area as well such as Nova Scotia Building Supplies.
Tumblr media
Given CKBW is, according to its slogan, The Sound of the South Shore, it's good to see that despite sticking to the classic hits format, it still finds time to live up to that slogan and be helpful to the locals of the South Shore area (of which Nova Scotia is a part). I personally found the show to be engaging, with the presenter's banter between links to be entertaining, helping to keep the show going without monotony, and I find the station's music selection is very good at recalling a sense of nostalgia for older songs, no doubt a deliberate effect CKBW wishes to invoke from its stated adult audiences.
So all this in mind, it's clear to me why CKBW has lasted as long as it has. Its music selection, focus on local content for adverts and weather and fun short-but-sweet links between songs all combine to create a perfect formula for success. If you want to try this formula for yourself, you can find CKBW and listen via their website here:

vpn-s sounds like smth that should get villified by mainstream media: openly advertized as a tool to "exploit" streaming services and hide your data. yet neither streaming services nor companies that rely on your data seem to care. what do you mean every antivirus company makes their own version??
is it just how it was with the introduction of plastic recycling in the 70-80s? that the ease of guilt of consumption lead to an increased rate of it? did the introduction of vpn-s increase our reliance on streaming services by turning the problem of impermanence into a question of convenience, essencially

The Lion (Pacific Heights), San Francisco opened in 1968.
A famous gay fern bar that went through many changes, finally effectively ceasing to be gay (though still LGBTQ owned) in around 2006. It closed in 2016.
During it's predominantly LGBTQ years it went from preppie, to hippie, to dance, to leather and back again.
It had a long series of eye catching, infamous adverts during the 1970s:
Tumblr media
“An iconic fern bar on Divisadero, which for about 30 years was a neighborhood gay bar before becoming more of a straight-people hang in the last decade, has closed following the death of its longtime owner."
"Like many bars around the city, especially those in business as long as this one, the crowd and character of The Lion Pub morphed and changed over the years. Its heyday as a gay fern bar in the early 1970's, after opening around 1968, gave way to periods of both more preppy, and more leather-y clientele, as Ellis told the Bay Area Reporter back in 1989. "The Lion has gone through a lot of changes since its opening 20 years ago," Ellis said at the time. "We've gone from preppy bar to a dance bar to a hippie bar to leather and back to preppy." And throughout all that, Ellis kept the eclectic, semi-tropical aesthetic in the place, with big leafy plants practically obscuring the entrance, and a couple of carved lions inside, possibly salvaged from an amusement park ride, with saddles for humans to ride them.
The bar had a particular kind of local notoriety in the late 70's and early 80's for its racy illustrated ads, perhaps in its leather period, which the BAR determined were done by late local artist Richard Roesener, who used the pseudonym Dale Hall.” …"
Source:
This long term community bar, with two apartments, was "repurposed" as an ugly grey soulless $6 MILLION single-family "home" by 2018.

It's been two days since I started watching the original He-Man cartoon and I'm still amazed by how much I'm enjoying it. Something about watching something new while knowing there aren't any real stakes and everything will be resolved in 20 minutes is really helping my mental health stop being on fire. I will also explode if I don't ramble about it, so this is your warning and #motu is the tag you can block to avoid it.
This is that rare and special think - a kids' cartoon where I like the heroes as much as the villains.
I wish they'd gone more into some things like He-Man actually dealing with someone getting hurt because of him in a way that wasn't just an "okay, everything's fine now, it wasn't even really his fault anyway"
But also I'm aware that that's asking too much of an 80's cartoon made to sell toys.
Engaging with it on its own terms it's dumb, fun fluff that I unironically love.
Outfits so weird and terrible they circle right back to being iconic. Bonus points for not being weirdly sexualised even when everyone on screen is wearing a bikini or hotpants.
So gay. So, so, so gay. I cannot overstate how queer this show is.
And how Adam is a perfect example of non-toxic masculinity. Definitely succeeded in their obvious goal of Setting A Good Example For The Kiddies.
The lip synch is terrible but the animation is surprisingly good.
I have really mixed feelings on the voice acting
On one hand I love that everyone speaks clearly enough that my auditory processing difficulties aren't an issue. I don't have to concentrate just to get words from the syllables spoken which means I can a) do crafts while watching and b) don't have to rely on youtube's auto-subtitles.
On the other, clarity takes precedence over actual, well, acting. This means that tense, dramatic moments are utterly ruined by a flat "nooo" from Adam. Sometimes funny, sometimes just annoying.
That one advert with He-Man and Skeletor dancing understood the series like no one else.
