Because of REASONS, I remembered my Scooby-Doo character designs from a few years ago. I decided to touch-up the picture a bit and fix a few things. So, here they are again! If I were to totally make my own “dream version” of Scooby-Doo, this isn’t exactly the “style” I’d prefer them in (something a little closer to the classic), this is just a cute and simple style I use when I want to get an idea for basic body-types, hair, and outfits. As for the story, I’d toss together all my favorite things from every previous version, but the basic plot would go like this; the kids all originally met when they were very little, trick-or-treating on Halloween, and solving the mystery of some mean older kids who were stealing candy. During middle school, they wound up moving away from each other for various reasons... but all reunited in high school! They had a fairly normal time, solving mundane mysteries and such. After graduation, they decide to take a road trip together, and THAT is when they truly become Mystery Inc. A mixture of the old-school plots, some new adventures, and yes- sometimes the spooky things ARE real! I’d honestly aim for it to be PG-13, it doesn’t need to be turbo-edgey and grim-dark, but they can say swears. There would one F-bomb in the whole show, and Freddy gets to say it~
(some character notes below)
I drew Velma first because I’ve always wanted to update her outfit as sort of a sleeveless sweater-dress kind of thing. I gave her red shorts instead of a skirt, and I think it somehow made her look more sporty but still cute. Some orange high-tops sort of bring it together. I wanted her hair to have something like a flapper-girl style, and I kept classic style square glasses because she works them (and still can’t see without them). Velma is easily the most adorable. She’s still the “smart one”, but she doesn’t know EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING; history, science and chemistry, literature, and math are what she excels at. She also has a near photographic memory, and although she understands a lot about technology (in terms of software/programming/coding), she isn’t too great with machines. Some background for her; Velma is mixed Japanese/Mexican and Jewish. She’s also trans and a lesbian~
I knew I wanted Daphne to look really fashionable, but also in something simple and comfortable. I gave her a purple halter top/skirt with a leg-cut on one side, and loose lavender jeans. She almost never has pants in her main outfit, but I think it gives her a fun nostalgic look of the 60s and 70s. I moved her green scarf up to her hair, and gave her matching green earrings. I like the idea that because she’s a little clumsy (Danger-Prone-Daphne) she’s taken lots of athletic lessons to try and make up for it; she’s done ballet, gymnastics, Karate, boxing, archery, played different sports like soccer/basketball/baseball/tennis, swimming lessons, and equestrian classes. Basically, when she’s in “alert-mode”, she could probably handle just about anything… but when she’s not paying attention she tends to trip (though, she’s kinda of backwards-lucky by stumbling into clues this way). Daphne can speak several languages fluently, she’s got perfect pitch, is super sensitive to textures so she can recognize any material, and has a gift for being very charming and intuitive. Some background for her; her dad is Iranian, and her mom is Scottish. She’s also bi~
I always wanted to give Fred a blue jacket. I just think it suits him. He’s also got light-blue jeans, and a white long-sleeve shirt (with a red collar to replace the ascot haha). He’s got a little bit of a farm-boy vibe (hence the belt and work boots). He’s all about cars and other machines, a real  Mr. Fix-It, and he loves taking stuff apart to see how it works. As a result he’s pretty good at his other hobby besides mechanics… TRAPS. Fred also practices being an escape artist, so if he ever gets caught he’ll be able to get out of almost anything. Although he’s certainly not “stupid”, he has a tendency to be a bit oblivious and a little too headstrong. He’s got a heart if gold though, and everybody who knows him would agree that he’s endlessly kind. Some background for him; Fred’s parents went missing around when he younger, and so he’s had a few different foster families. He doesn’t get reunited with his folks until much later (learning more about his family, he finds out he’s mixed Italian/Norwegian). He’s also bi~
Shaggy doesn’t need much changing (if I altered too much, he just wouldn’t look like Shaggy anymore). I have him a white long-sleeved shirt under his classic green one, changed his brown pants into cargoes (all loose fitting, Shaggy likes it baggy), and gave him some black sneakers. He’s naturally still got long hair and a scruffy chin (plus some sideburns). Even though he’s a well known scardey-cat, Shaggy has a deep love for horror movies and fictional spooky stuff doesn’t seem to bother him. His various fears and phobias have actually made him a safety expert; not only does he usually carry a back-pack with a fully stocked first aid kit, he knows how rescue somebody who is drowning, all the safety procedures for different vehicles/aircraft, CPR, and survival tactics (he actually knows more medical facts than Velma). Despite being so thin and lanky, he is almost always eating, sometimes thinking with his stomach rather than his head. He’s always happy to share though, and he even cooks great meals for his friends (mindful of allergies and what-not). Some background for him; he’s Canadian First Nations and Jewish on his mother’s side. He’s also trans, bi and ace~
Scooby was maybe the most difficult to draw… he’s so iconic, and I wasn’t sure how to draw him in this style but still make him look like Scooby. I’m not sure if I succeeded, but I think the result isn’t too bad. Shaggy found Scoob as a pup, and they have been best friends ever since. Like Shaggy, Scooby loves to eat and hates to be afraid, but he’s only a coward when something threatens him; if a monster or villain is going to hurt one of his friends, Scooby always comes to their defense. People forget that he’s actually a very big strong dog because he’s usually so gentle and silly. Scoob knows all sorts of trick from the typical “sit/roll-over/shake” to more impressive stunts. Although he loves attention and praise, the best way to get him to do anything is to bribe him with a Scooby Snack! He’s a very smart animal, and the fact that he can communicate when he smells or hears something suspicious that people might miss is a real asset for solving mysteries. Like any good dog, Scooby is loyal and lovable~

F1 Driver's Championship winners who switched teams right after they won it
This post was inspired by a question asked by @vro0m the other day. Although they were asking about drivers who left WCC winning teams, i thought drivers champions who ditched their teams would be interesting as well.
Juan Manuel Fangio, 1956->57; Ferrari->Maserati. (was known to drive for a different team after each of his championship wins up yo this point, but its important to note those times had to do with his teams leaving the sport. The only time it was his decision was 1956->57)
Alberto Ascari, 1953->1954; Ferrari->Lancia (Not paid enough, perhaps on the grounds that he was risking his life)
Denny Hulme, 1967->68; Brabham->McLaren (can't find a source on this one but he was extremely close to Bruce McLaren and had driven for him in other race series. To give an idea of why i think their closeness could have been a factor, he was considered a man of fewer words and emotions than Kimi Raikonen, but openly weeped at Bruces death in 1970 during a testing accident)
Jackie Stewart, 1969->70; Matra->Tyrell (this could be semantic. Matra International was a "privateer" team from 1968->69 which was actually a collab between Tyrell the man and the french company Matra. The name of Stewart's team changes from 69-70 because Tyrell the man prefered maintaining a working relationship with Ford whereas Matra was moving on to Chrysler. Wikipedia articles partially seem to think the Tyrell team is basically a continuation of the Matra International team the year prior since Tyrell the man was technically the team owner of each. Matra however enters a works team in 1970 that also ran one race in 1969 so its confusing. )
Jochen Rindt, Honorable mention; he died in the Italian GP practice in 1970. He had such a big lead he still won the championship in spite of his passing.
Nikki Lauda, 1977->78; Ferrari->Brabham (Nikki's huge accident that almost killed him in the 1976 season changed his outlook on racing in exceptionally poor weather conditions. As a result, he refused to race in the 1976 Japanese GP, and lost the championship to James Hunt in the process. Ferarri was pissed about this and it deteriorated his relationship with Ferrari severely for the 1977 season. After being treated so poorly (even in the driver lineup from his point of view) he decided to leave despite winning the championship. Its important to note however that he's believed to have won by consistency despite the car's outright slower pace, so he might have also had technical concerns)
Nelson Piquet, 1987->88; Williams->Lotus (in 86 and 87 Piquet was racing alongside Nigel Mansel in a WCC winning Williams. According to Piquet he had an agreement with team owner Frank Williams that he would be the number one driver for 86, an agreement he felt was neglected after Frank got in a car accident and left the team in the management of Mansel's race engineer. Specifically, he was upset that Mansel was not ordered to let him pass for the race win on two occasions that year, and had he been let through he would have been champion rather than Alain Prost. The relationship never recovered from that, but for some reason Piquet waited to leave. It is worth noting that he signed for Lotus before winning the 87 championship. Additionally Mansel finished first in more races than him that year but lost because of Piquet's podium consistency)
Alain Prost, 1989->1990; McLaren->Ferrari (ho boy. Long story partially short, Prost believed Honda (engine supplier) favored Senna, and therefore so did McLaren for the 1988-89 seasons, to the point of even giving Senna a better engine in the 1989 season. Supposedly for the 1988 season a Honda employee confirmed the suspicion while speaking to Prost in person, but promised he'd do his best to change that for 89. Prost did not believe this had occured, as he felt his car was underperforming Senna's in 89. His biggest piece of evidence was that while running a better straight-line-speed setup than Senna in Mexico, he still was not being able to pass Senna by engine power on the straight. For Honda's part, they had a major press event where they tried to explain technically why Senna's driving style suited the engine better, but the employee giving the interview kept referring to prost by his surname but not Senna, which is a sign of a stronger personal relationship in Japanese culture and was taken as a sign of bias)
Nigel Mansell, 1992->93; Williams->N/A (retired)
Michael Schumacher, 1995->96; Benneton->Ferrari (Schumacher's official statement is that he abandoned his contract with Benneton a year early due to "the teams damaging actions in 1994" to use wikipedias wording. The teams actions include: software shenanigans where the car was found to have the supposedly unused ability to correct bad manual starts, which would give the driver the ability to have perfect starts regardless of their affectiveness with the clutch; ignoring a black flag for a safety car overtake; and having a skidblock that was so worn down it suggested Benneton was ignoring aero regulations)
Damon Hill, 1996->97; Williams->Arrows (this one doesny count because it was outside of Hill's control, but it's really funny. Williams sacked him in favor of Heinz-Harald Frentzen, whom i have never heard of and apparently would only ever win 3 F1 races in his career. Hill chose Arrows not because they were the best team with an offer, but because they wanted to pay him the most. His career sucked after that)
Fernando Alonso, 2006->2007; Renault->McLaren (wikipedia straight up just doesnt explain this. A reddit thread gives a lot of uncited opinions as to why, but a significantly large number of their users cite that McLaren was seen as a consistently top team in this era while Renault was seen as volitale. With Alonso signing for 2007 as early as late 2005, heres some possible factors: Renault's bizzare lack of commitment to staying in the sport; McLaren winning more races in late 2005 than Renault; Renault's success was partially attributed to weird tire rules).
Jenson Button 2009->10; Brawn->McLaren (Brawn was bought out to become mercedes, but was left to its Brawn leadership to still run the team. Jenson won the championship because of dominance at the beginning that was cut short by not developing the car enough. He still won overall, but Jenson asked for a larger focus on in-season developement for the next year as a condition for staying. Ultimately, he was spoked off when he discovered mercedes didnt have enough sponsors for their plan yet)
Nico Rosberg, 2016->17; Mercedes->N/A (retired)

What’s your favorite number?
Hm. Probably 2. 20 and 21 also have good vibes.
What is your job?
i'm a program coordinator at a little neighborhood community center for refugees and immigrants. i do a bit of everything, including substituting when any of the english teachers can't come. i really love it.
If you could go back to school, would you?
ugh i think about it, but there just isn't a degree program nearby that hits what i want to learn/do more than what i'm already doing. at this point it turns into a question of investment--will the time and money and annoyance turn directly into work that i want to do? it's tricky because the world of adult English/literacy/basic education, which is what i really love, doesn't have a lot of defined certifications/requirements in new york (unlike K-12 public education), so it's hard to say if any given master's program would really translate usefully into a clearer career path than i have now. there are certainly things i'd like to learn more about (many!) but also i'm lazy and going back to school a few years ago kind of sucked. i'm too old for homework. fuck homework.
Can you parallel park?
um. i mean. i have done it once or twice. i avoid it whenever possible.
A job you had that would surprise people?
i used to make tiny glass needles and poke cells to read their electrical currents! also i worked in a liquor store for a while, which sometimes makes people get a funny look
Do you think aliens are real?
is there, has there been, will there be, something that you can call life somewhere else in the universe? seems quite possible. are they zooming around looking at us right now? i doubt it.
Can you drive a manual car?
no. i've had a couple of sessions working on it in a parking lot.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
all pleasure is guilty, we must atone
Tattoos?
nah, there isn't anything i really want on me
Favorite color?
deep reds, all kinds of blue, earth tones
Favorite type of music?
my spotify playlist is really heavy on the 30s - 70s, mostly 60s. folk, rock, motown, johnny cash, linda ronstadt, blues, some gospel
Do you like puzzles?
i love jigsaw puzzles! i can't have them Because Cats
Any phobias?
no

20th century NISSAN MOTORSPORTS
1958-2000
'60~
The infancy of domestic racing.
R381 and R382 win consecutive Japanese Grand Prix victories
The dawn of full-fledged motorsports in Japan
The origin of the visit dates back to the late 1950s, when a two-wheeled Asama Volcano race was held. As the 1960s entered, domestic motorcycle manufacturers began to win on the world GP stage, and Japanese industry became a reality on the world stage.
I proved it. The Suzuka Circuit was completed in the fall of 1962, and Japan's first full-scale automobile race, the 1st Japan Grand Prix, was held the following year in May 1963. Each automobile manufacturer, taking note of its promotional effects, soon formed a works team. Nissan selected powerful riders one after another, such as Kenjiro Tanaka, Kunimitsu Takahashi, Gen Kitano, Motoharu Kurosawa, Masahiro Hasemi, Kenji Tohira, Seiichi Suzuki, and Kazuyoshi Hoshino, and many of them went on to become main players in the domestic four-wheel racing world. It will reign for a long time.
Funabashi Circuit in 1965 and Fuji Speedway opens in 1966. Kanto and all over Japan
The racing fever is increasing. Just in time for Tokyo Motor Show.
The automobile industry was in a period of high growth before and after the pick-up.
It was a time when it made great strides as Japan's core industry.
Then, in 1966, Nissan and Prince merged, and Japan's first racing sports car “Prince R380”
will further evolve under Nissan.
In 1968, a large displacement engine with a unique huge wing was introduced.
The R381, with its powerful engine, and the R382 the following year defeated strong rivals to win the Japanese Grand Prix. And formula car races are held in Japan.
Fairlady/Skyline/Bluebird GT cars and Touring cars.
Many car races, as well as endurance races that included these races, were held.
Nissan also actively participated in overseas rallies.
At a time when the World Rally Championship did not yet exist,
Monte Carlo and Safari became the main battlegrounds.
The 1960s was the infancy of domestic racing.
It was a time of rapid evolution and growth. However, the issue of automobile exhaust gas became apparent in the 70s.
In early summer of 1969(?) , Nissan announced that it would be absent from the Japanese GP, and at that moment,
Domestic motor sports had only been growing until then.
The world was forced to seek a new direction.

The Rise and Fall of the Golden Era of Japanese Sports Cars
Name: Manav Anand
Student ID: 55378875
I love cars. Particularly Japanese sports cars from the late 80’s and early 90’s. As I learned more and more about economics, I began to learn how heavily the economy was responsible for the rise and fall of the sports cars I love so much. Here I will describe the economic events which had a cascading effect on the Japanese car industry from the early ‘70s to late ‘90s, and car culture today. The story begins with underdog Japanese automakers competing against the oligopoly of the "Big 3" American car companies and dominating in the midst of a global gas crisis. Flush with cash, alongside a strong domestic economy, Japanese carmakers poured their heart and soul into engineering exciting sports cars and insane race cars, pioneering new technology and facing off against European racing legends. Finally, a decline in the Japanese economy and changes in import law led automakers to end sports car development, marking the end of a “golden era” of Japanese sports cars.
Tumblr media
Part 1: Oil crisis
The 1973 oil crisis was caused by the total embargo of oil to the United States (among other countries) which caused significantly higher gas prices and gasoline shortages. Due to a price ceiling on oil imposed in 1971, it was more profitable to import cheap oil to secure a larger profit. Subsequently, By 1972, more than 80% of the oil in the United States was imported, leading to a devastating reduction in supply when the embargo came. The quantity sold became extremely low, and the equilibrium price of gasoline shot up. A second oil crisis (different cause, similar effect) also happened in 1979, and famous pictures from this time show how severe gas shortages had become throughout the late 70s.
These repeated gas crises caused a demand for more fuel efficient cars, and small, efficient Japanese imports were the solution to the demand. Combined with a better perception of the quality of Japanese vehicles, the efficient, practical imports had begun to dominate the existing oligopoly of “Big Three” American car manufacturers Ford, Chrysler and GM. The Big 3 struggled to match the quality and efficiency of Japanese cars, and spent the next few years playing catch-up to win back their share in the overall US car market. These firms were engaged in monopolistic competition, and Japanese firms had entered and began securing short-run profits. The Big 3 companies had actually set up their financial downturn, as they had spent their money on marketing and production of big cars while ignoring the market's desire for compact cars. The Japanese automakers focused on what the market wanted, making cars which provided maximum utility to US consumers. Comparing car advertisements from the 1970s clearly shows this ideology difference. The American companies inability to satisfy the demands of US consumers led to them being outsold by firms that could, showing how even massive corporations must abide by economic fundamentals, or face massive failure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As if there weren’t enough things going well for the Japanese in the ‘70s and ‘80s, the dollar-to-yen ratio allowed the Japanese imports to be profitably sold at much lower prices than Domestic vehicles, further increasing the competitiveness of Japanese Imports in America. Even the Japanese government played a hand, identifying how critical the automobile industry was to the economy, and taking measures to financially support its growth. The extreme success of the 70’s, along with a booming Japanese economy due to smart governmental decisions, leads us to the golden era of Japanese sports cars.
Part 2: The Golden Era
Flush with cash, consumer demand for luxury goods in Japan skyrocketed, and automakers were happy to spend their extra money on expensive R&D for sports cars, leading to the introduction of turbochargers for increased power, electronically adjustable suspension, Adjustable aerodynamics and more. It is often said that the easiest way to make a small fortune in racing, is to start with a large fortune. It is also often said "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday" Referring to how even if automakers lost money by racing, racing success would be powerful marketing for the firm. We can see in the RX-7 advertisement how directly Mazda used their racing pedigree to market their vehicles. Racing is expensive, and Japanese automakers had the resources to race in the big leagues. Japanese automakers succeeded in the racing world, with not just good performances, but dominating ones.
Tumblr media
The Calsonic Nissan R32 Skyline, entered in the Australian Touring Car Championship won every race it was entered in for 3 seasons. Its performance was so unbelievable, it permanently earned the Skyline GTR the nickname “Godzilla”. Consumers could purchase street-going versions of these cars, and enjoy the racing technology for themselves. The all wheel drive system was so advanced for its time, that even today, car enthusiasts continue to modify and use this system in their custom, high performance vehicles.
Tumblr media
Honda had devoted its resources towards Formula 1, and from the years of 1987-1991, won 5 consecutive constructor and driver’s championships alongside the Mclaren and Williams Racing Teams. Developing just one Formula one race engine costs extraordinary amounts of money. Interviews with Nigel Mansell, who drove Honda-powered Williams cars from 1985 to 1987, revealed that Honda were making and developing 4 to 6 totally different engines in a single season during this time.
Tumblr media
Outside of racing, Honda was developing the Honda NSX (Also known as the Acura NSX, as the NSX was used to launch the Acura Brand). The Honda NSX was a mid engined sports car intended to compete against automakers like Ferrari and Lamborghini. The desire for a lightweight chassis led to the development of the aluminum chassis, which paved the path for aluminum manufacturing in automobiles for years to come. The famous racing driver Ayrton Senna, who was driving for McLaren/Honda in F1 at this time, was consulted for input on the handling and chassis.

Until the NSX, consumers were forced to put up with temperamental Italian exotics if they wanted a super car; They were hot, noisy, and cramped, with a plethora of mechanical issues and oversights. The Honda NSX, in contrast, was reliable, comfortable, and practical. The Honda NSX was a newcomer to the supercar scene, and completely shifted the market; If Honda could do it, why didn't all the other manufacturers do it? The Honda NSX went on to sell well, and gain celebrity status, being regarded as one of the greatest sports cars to ever exist due to its practicality combined with amazing handling. Even as the NSX aged, its accomplishments were so great, that It stood as the benchmark for another one of the greatest sports cars to ever be made. The Mclaren F1 was the first "hyper car", a car that truly had no limits or constraints, other than to be the very best. It held the automoblie top speed record for 24 years. Its designer, Gordan Murray said: "The moment I drove the 'little' NSX, all the benchmark cars–Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini–I had been using as references in the development of my car vanished from my mind,"

Mazda had been competing in endurance racing, slowly trying to win Le Mans in a car powered by their signature Wankel Rotary Engine. In 1991, the team drivers were told to drive all-out, forgoing the usual conservative racing strategy employed by teams to ensure that the cars would survive to cross the finish line after 24 hours of racing. The car’s superior fuel efficiency meant the car could stop for fuel less often over the course of the race, and the superior reliability of the engine displayed in earlier racing meant that drivers could push the engine to its limits. The engine was so reliable, that after winning the race, covering 3,000 miles at an average speed of 128 mph, Mazda engineers said that the engine was in condition to complete another race with nothing more than an oil change. The money spent on R&D during this time allowed for innovation of technologies in the harshest conditions an automobile could be subject to, and these technologies would slowly be developed into the technology we have today.
Part 3: Where Did it All go?
Tumblr media
The golden era of sports cars, fueled by the success of efficient, practical and reliable Japanese cars would have to come to an end eventually. Economic conditions began to decline in Japan, meaning that cars had to be sold at much higher prices abroad for profits to be made. Domestically in Japan, consumers did not have expendable income to spend on sports cars. The increase in the price of imports led to a decline in the units sold overseas, and changes to import law made this decline even more severe. Automakers would have to spend additional resources to comply with different US safety and emissions standards. Automotive manufacturers finished development of one final generation of sports cars in the late 90’s, and took their focus away from sports car development.
Although the era is now long in the past, the cultural influence of these cars is undeniable. The children who grew up watching Fast and Furious are finally old enough to buy the sports cars they saw on the big screen. Automakers are now once again developing fun, sports cars, but for many people, they simply do not scratch the same itch. New cars cannot replicate the analogue feeling, as modern technology trades driving experience for electronic convenience. Gone are the days where a teenager could work part time and buy a new sports car for themselves, and instead younger generations are scooping up old Japanese cars instead. Despite 30+ years of advancement, many car enthusiasts consider modern sports cars as inferior to the classics, and demand has skyrocketed accordingly. Legendary sports cars such as the Nissan Z, Mazda Miata, Toyota Supra, Honda Civic Type R and Acura Integra have all made a comeback with new, modern interpretations of the sports car formula, but are still often overshadowed by their older counterparts at car meets and shows. The famous 25-year import rule means that the dwindling supply of cars domestically cannot be replenished with cars from abroad.
The economic forces which guide the capitalistic world we live in are strong and relentless. While countless firms have collapsed into financial ruin, Japanese auto firms made a series of extremely wise economic decisions which allowed them to experience massive growth and the ability to show the world what they were capable of. Japanese automakers didn’t simply succeed as firms in this time period, they established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. They took on almost every other auto manufacturer across all types of vehicles, and showed them that they had fallen complacent in creating products that consumers actually demanded. Their achievements and design still stand strong today, delivering experiences yet to be replicated.

'70s Harajuku (Part 1)
The Harajuku district in Shibuya has gained international acclaim as a hub of Tokyo's youth culture and fashion scene. Its streets are lined with cafes, boutiques, and well-known fast fashion stores, drawing a constant stream of tourists, fashionistas, and teenagers. However, before the arrival of billionaire retailers, foreigners, and media attention, this area's early inhabitants were the ones who truly shaped its unique character.
Tumblr media
Several factors contributed to Harajuku evolving into a valuable and fashionable destination. Firstly, its location, accessible via the Yamanote Line and situated within the Shibuya ward, played a pivotal role. The vicinity surrounding Shibuya Station, located about 1.3 km north, has been a focal point for youth culture since the 1950s. Moreover, Minato-Aoyama, which borders Omotesando Avenue, has been developed as a fashionable place since VAN made it a hub for Ivy fashion, scattering its boutiques and facilities around the area in the '60s.
Another noteworthy aspect is the absence of certain establishments like sex shops, dingy bars, pachinko parlors, cabaret clubs, and love hotels. This is due to the city's designation of the area as an Education District, owing to the presence of the Jingumae Elementary School. Consequently, Harajuku maintains a safer and considerably less seedy atmosphere than other popular fashion and entertainment districts like Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and the central part of Shibuya.
Despite this, Harajuku didn't become a famous, trendy area overnight. For decades, the district remained a quiet residential neighborhood with minimal activity, except for the annual influx of New Year's Day visitors who assembled at the Meiji Shrine. Yet, one distinguishing feature would set it apart: its international vibe.
In 1947, the construction of the Washington Heights complex, a vast housing facility for the US Armed Forces, transformed the landscape, prompting the emergence of local shops catering to international families, exemplified by the enduring Kiddy Land toy store. Kiddy Land, which still thrives today, became a beloved destination for the children of American soldiers and was the first shop in Japan to offer Barbie dolls.
Tumblr media

In 1964, Japanese authorities took back control of the land occupied by Washington Heights. The government repurposed the area and built Olympic facilities and athlete accommodations, further fueling investments in Harajuku. By 1966, the local nightlife began flourishing, primarily due to affluent teenagers cruising the streets in flashy American sports cars. They were drawn to cosmopolitan restaurants that kept their doors open late into the night, with Route 5, a drive-in eatery, being a notable hotspot. Right across the street from Route 5 stood an Adventist church, contributing to the area's foreign allure.
Around that time, Harajuku garnered significant media attention with the completion of Olympia Co-Op, Japan's first luxury condominium development. But it was another residential building that shaped Harajuku's spirit...
Harajuku Central Apartments
Occupations like stylist, copywriter, designer, fashion photographer, and illustrator didn't gain recognition until the post-war period. They were referred to as the "katakana professions" due to their foreign origin and the fact their Japanese translations are loanwords, usually written in the Katakana syllabary. It wasn't until the 1980s, thanks to articles in magazines like AnAn and other fashion publications, that these professions became widely known among the Japanese public. However, starting in the '60s, more than a decade before becoming widespread, these creative individuals—already molding Japanese pop culture, fashion, and advertising—gathered in the Harajuku Central Apartments opposite the Jingumae crossing.
Central Apartments featured seven floors that accommodated offices, boutiques, and a café. The café that occupied part of the ground floor, Leon, achieved legendary status and was immortalized in fashion magazines as a meeting place for Japan's creative elite.

With the launch of magazines like AnAn, Non-no, and Popeye, which reported on Tokyo's fashionable districts, boutiques, and individuals, Harajuku gained recognition among trend-conscious individuals across Japan, and so did Leon, the trendiest coffee shop in Harajuku.
Unlike Chianti, the upscale Italian restaurant frequented by celebrities in the posh Nishiazabu area, Leon was accessible, unpretentious, and affordable. In fact, you could enjoy multiple cups of coffee for a fixed price, a rarity in Tokyo at the time. Nevertheless, its reputation as the haunt of Harajuku's most notable professionals made it an intimidating spot where few dared to venture.
The recurring theme in stories from young visitors to the area was, "I was just a kid from the countryside; there was no way I could summon the courage to enter." Even Tokyoites who weren't part of the inner circle kept their distance. However, Leon's large glass windows attracted the attention of passersby, who craned their necks and tried to catch a glimpse of celebrities and industry figures featured in magazines and on TV.
Tumblr media

Inside Leon, despite its no-frills décor and menu, it felt like entering a new world where only the most stylish individuals were welcomed. Everyone in the café dressed in the latest European and American fashion trends, and the music playing was the latest hits from London, New York City, or California. Since the café also served as an office for its customers, you could overhear Japan's most prominent fashion, music, and advertising professionals openly discussing their latest projects and loudly taking calls on the venue's pink telephone.
While the coffee shop served as Central Apartment's meeting place, it wasn't its only commercial facility. Harajuku's first boutique, Madame Nonnon, by legendary designer Taro Aramaki, opened in the building in 1964. It sold casual Parisian fashion, and its border (stripped) shirts were a big trend. (Even today, striped shirts remain a cherished staple of Parisian casual style in Japan, with trend-conscious women often sourcing them from the British brand St. James.).
Madame Nonnon, considered by many as Japan's first boutique, shaped the exclusive aura of Central Apartments. Taro Aramaki was discerning in his clientele, only selling to those who matched the store's style. Prices were exceedingly high, and except for the striped shirts and a few select items, everything was either tailor-made or imported directly from Paris. Additionally, sizing was limited to XS, adding to the exclusivity.
Later, other retailers started occupying space in Harajuku Central Apartments, and the basement floor became a small shopping mall with stalls selling food and fashion items. But the biggest success story emerging out of the Central Apartments' shops is probably MILK.
Tumblr media
The entrance of MILK's first boutique (left) and a glimpse inside Mademoiselle Nonnon, including its iconic border pieces, as part of an AnAn 1972 editorial (top right).
Under the direction of Hitomi Okawa, MILK initially sold women's clothes, mixing playfulness with the London punk aesthetic admired by the young designer. Eventually, the brand became a staple of Harajuku kawaii fashion with its girly designs and celebrity admirers. MILK influenced the rise of fashion tribes like the Gothic Lolitas and gained prominence, expanding nationwide. A men's line, MILKBOY, was launched in 1975.
MILK's flagship store is still in Harajuku, but not at Central Apartments. As a testament to how much the area has evolved and how things have drastically changed, the building met its demise in 1998. The place is now the site of the Tokyu Plaza shopping center. However, Harajuku owes a lot of its fashionable, creative cred to the existence of the legendary building, which brought some of the most avant-garde professionals to the area.
The Evolution of Harajuku
Harajuku has become so renowned that every facet of the district is well-known. There's Ura-Harajuku, the charming backstreets teeming with cafes and independent shops. There's the heart of Harajuku itself, which typically includes Cat Street and Takeshita Dori—lively thoroughfares packed with stores and food stalls catering to teenagers. You'll also find the bustling Meiji Dori and the iconic Jingumae Crossing, which doubles as the intersection of Omotesando. And, of course, there's Omotesando itself, the grand avenue lined with zelkova trees, home to the flagship stores of luxury brands that extend from the Meiji Shrine to the entrance of the stylish and equally lavish Aoyama-dori in the Minato ward.
In the '60s, however, there was no Ura-Harajuku, and Omotesando was just a tranquil and beautiful avenue with almost no buildings. Harajuku was a quiet, relaxing area of central Tokyo, catering mainly to its residents. While a few trend-savvy people gravitated towards the area due to its cosmopolitan air, it was a well-kept secret among them.
Tumblr media
A fashionable girl walks in front of the Kiddy Land toy shop in Harajuku Kiddy Land in 1974/Alao Yokogi.
However, as the 1970s rolled in, AnAn magazine changed everything. The magazine frequently featured Harajuku alongside well-known Tokyo districts like Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Ginza. During this era, Harajuku hadn't yet embraced the youthful, inclusive vibrancy it enjoys today. Instead, it was an elegant adult enclave characterized by its upscale, intimidating boutiques, the accomplished creative professionals at Central Apartment, and the opulent Co-op Olympia and its wealthy residents.
After Mademoiselle Non-non, a wave of boutiques began to emerge. Model Mako opened the trendy MAKO BIS. London underground fashion, favored by the style-savvy, was available at Help and Suzuroku. Meanwhile, for those who preferred folk and boho-inspired garments, also trendy at the time, there was Violon and Hitotsume Kozou.
In 1970, BIGI, a women's ready-to-wear clothing brand founded by the husband and wife team of Takeo Kikuchi and Yoshie Inaba, opened its first store in Harajuku. Three years later, Rei Kawakubo inaugurated the first boutique of her now internationally renowned label, COMME des GARÇONS, in the same area. BIGI and COMME des GARÇONS, along with other brands created by emerging Japanese designers, set off the "DC Brand Boom," which would shape the domestic fashion scene in the following decade, a theme we will revisit later.
BEAMS, now one of Japan's largest retailers with stores nationwide, started in Harajuku in 1976 as a modest import store modeled after a UCLA dorm room. It quickly drew crowds searching for American brands featured in the MADE IN USA Catalog and Popeye magazine. During the same year, teenagers flocked to the neighborhood to shop at Cream Soda, a second-hand boutique known for its '50s-inspired rockabilly fashion, sparking a youth fashion craze. By 1977, a significant portion of Harajuku had been closed to vehicular traffic, transforming the area into what the Japanese refer to as a "pedestrian paradise." Stylish young people began congregating in the area to dance and flaunt their eye-catching outfits, mostly bought from the local Boutique Takenoko.
In 1978, a fashion building aimed at the youth market, LaForet Harajuku, opened at the Jingumae Crossing, just across from the Central Apartments. LaForet quickly gained fame as one of Tokyo's premier shopping destinations and continues to be a beloved fixture in the area today. Harajuku's transformation into a central hub for fashion was complete.

The Millennium Falcon
Tumblr media
Princess Leia with The Millennium Falcon on The Isle of Skye in August 2020.
How It All Began
In 2018 we bought a well maintained low mileage Nissan X-Trail T31 with several aims in mind:
Be a daily driver, though we live in town, walk most places & have little need to drive far or often.
Take us, plus the piles of equipment we use, up to Scotland, hopefully every year, to climb Munros, canoe lochs, camp both via water & walks & generally enjoy the outdoors north of the border. We didn’t want to be beaten by rough terrain.
Be a platform for camping - from or in depending on circumstances.
Move our possessions around the country when needed.
Be a reliable mode of transport for all the above. Having been sold on Japanese reliability by countless AA patrolmen over many decades, plus our own experience with a Honda Civic which was a stopgap for a year that turned into nine, Nissan was an obvious option.
The limitations on the vehicle we chose were that it needed to fit our narrow allocated parking space in the garage beneath our 70′s apartment block but maximise load space both inside & on the roof. (Headroom 1.9m!)
The car we bought has fitted the bill perfectly. We named it The Millennium Falcon, because everything’s better with Star Wars.
As I understand the X-Trail’s development, it was designed for snowboarders in Japan, which is pretty niche, but that gave it a mix of off-road ability and load capacity which worked for us. The first generation came in for some criticism, such as exhaust placement, but these were addressed & this iteration seems to have hit a sweet spot for us. Newer versions look over-designed so curvy, which is fine on a sports car, but that compromises its load space and the width of roof bars it can take. Because of its rear camera as standard, which may seem a frivolous luxury, we can easily park it in our restricted garage. The roof is low enough to get our canoes onto & it will be a capable towing machine when we don’t have the strength to do that & need a trailer. The leather seats & comfortable driving position make it a pleasant place to be on long journeys.
We don’t need to undertake heavy off-road modifications (there is plenty of guidance on the internet) as it’s as capable as we need it to be. I’ve done plenty of gnarly off-roading around the world - that’s not how we roll any more.
Here I’ll try to share some of the things we’ve added & how we’ve used it over the last 5 years, & continue to use it, to help other would-be adventurers.

Mike Savage New Canaan The Future of the Muscular Tissue Vehicle
In the last few years, the US automakers have actually made a return to classic style muscular tissue automobiles. These automobiles have been made to look timeless as well as really comparable to their very early 1970s equivalents. Ford started this new pattern with the new Mustang in 2005. Snappy really evocative the 60s Mustangs, the automobile was an instant hit. Ford had the marketplace caught given that GM had stopped the Camaro in 2002 and also with Chrysler doing not have a V8 back wheel drive muscle mass cars and truck also. In the last year, this has changed with the intro of the new Challenger and afterwards just lately, with the introduction of the brand-new Camaro. Car lovers more than happy to see these cars back and the concern comes to be, for how long will they last?
In the previous three months, GM and also Chrysler have actually both sought bankruptcy security to help reduce financial obligation as well as enable them to proceed developing automobiles. GM has actually liquidated most of its brands consisting of Saturn, Hummer and also Saab. The federal government is now the key shareholder in both business. The federal government plans to place new management into place to alter the schedule of cars and trucks both business are creating to focus on small automobiles and also less large engine cars as well as trucks. It will certainly interest see how consumers react to this modification.
Mike Savage New Canaan
The location where American automakers have been most effective in the last twenty years has actually been trucks, SUVs, as well as sports cars as well as sedans with bigger engines. No muscle mass auto enthusiast is mosting likely to wish to change his Mustang with a Honda Civic. Ford attempted that in the late 70s with the Mustang II and it was a calamity.
To me, the body and soul of the American vehicle market hinges on performance vehicles and also trucks. This is where the American vehicle firms have actually had the ability to dominate the market. Honda, Nissan and Toyota have all released new complete size vehicles in the last 5 years and the sales of these automobiles still pale in comparison to the sales of the Silverado, Sierra as well as F150.
A year ago with gas prices at the greatest they had actually ever before been, industry analysts were criticizing American automakers for not having better offerings of tiny autos to take on the Japanese and also European automakers. I would have to agree with that belief. As long as the gas prices have transformed over the last 6 or seven years, it seems as if American business have actually attempted to move away from small 4 cyndrical tube autos and generate even more V6 and V8 powered automobiles, which in knowledge was not the right choice. By doing this, they have actually permitted Toyota, Honda and also others to gain more market share in a very competitive market. Both GM and also Chrysler do need to existing more powerful offerings in these markets.
However, because gas prices went down dramatically late in 2008, the sales of trucks and SUVs have actually increased significantly. Toyota, which had a long wait to get a Prius a year back, can not provide those cars and trucks away despite big incentives today. The point is clear: Americans desire their big engine automobiles and also vehicles as long as gas is affordable. When gas increases, the market changes in the direction of smaller sized more fuel reliable autos.
Mike Savage New Canaan
At this point, it does not make sense for American auto makers to make a dramatic change away from the automobiles and vehicles that have actually kept them active over the last few years into little cars that no one has actually proven they can offer. We understand they can sell efficiency vehicles and also vehicles. Attempt mosting likely to a local dealership today to purchase a Challenger or Camaro. Many suppliers do not even have any kind of and if they do, they will certainly not be there for greater than a day or two.
In light of everything that has actually happened in the auto sector in the in 2015, it will interest see what the future holds for the muscular tissue cars and truck. Are we repeating the 1970s where high gas costs and emissions will aid exterminate the muscle mass automobile once more? Or are we seeing a regeneration of the muscle mass car that will endure because of the present economic condition? Only time will tell.

In the last couple of years, the US automakers have actually made a return to traditional design muscle mass vehicles.
