Self Promo Sunday: “Broken for You”
(This was originally written back in 2018 for a Whumptober event, in answer to the prompt of “Bruised”. It got longer than I intended, and maybe isn’t quite as whumpy as I originally hoped, but there are bruises, and I think there’s some sweet hurt/comfort as well, so hopefully some of you will enjoy. It fits in right at the end of episode 6x08 “I’ll Be Your Mirror”, with some missing moments I truly wish we could have gotten.
Tumblr media
[Also on AO3, if that’s your preference - As part of my more whumpy one shot collection: “Bits and Pieces (Why Does it Hurt so Good?)” ]
by : @snowbellewells
By the time Emma, Killian, and Henry returned home from Regina’s vault, more than a little shaken from time spent trapped in the Evil Queen’s mirror and a fraught faceoff with the villainess herself eventually leading to Henry’s moms’ return, they trooped through the entryway and toward the stairs ready to drop.  It would seem that none of them even wanted to stop for a bite of supper or a little of Killian and Henry’s favored pastime of relaxing for a bit in front of the “magic box” with buttered popcorn and root beer when they could grab a chance.  Instead, all any of them wanted to do was hug each other, thankful they had made it back home together in one piece, and collapse onto their beds to sleep the trippily twisted day’s events away.
Henry did just that as they reached the bottom of the steps up to their second floor, but not before thanking Hook for having his back and helping him get ready for the dance and for his advice on girls and dating - to which the pointed tips of Killian’s ears reddened and Emma arched a curious brow, mentally reminding herself to revisit that bit of information later - and squeezing his mom tightly around her waist, holding on for longer than usual and suffering her affectionate ruffling of his hair and kiss to the crown of his head without his usual complaints.  He then plodded upward, telling them he needed to call Violet, she’d be worried about how things turned out, and then he was turning in.
Chuckling, Emma and Killian both agreed, adding that they were right behind him, before toeing off their own boots and glancing around the downstairs of their home, making sure all was in order for the night.  With a flick of her wrist, Emma ensured that the doors were locked and turned off the lights, then the two of them started up the stairs together, following their son’s recent path.
It wasn’t until they entered their bedroom, and Emma turned to lean against Killian gently, pressing him into the closed door and herself into his arms, that she noticed something was off with him.  Her hands trailed up his biceps to his shoulders, and he let out a tense breath of air that was nothing like the usual chuckle when one or the other of them got a bit handsy, and when her fingers slipped into his hair, tugging slightly to pull his face down to her lips, he couldn’t hide the wince of real pain that escaped, nor the way he flinched slightly at her playful touch.
Immediately on alert, Emma pulled back to study him more closely, brows furrowed and eyes serious as she took in the way Killian was now clearly holding himself gingerly, practically propped against the door, as if once they were home again in their safe space it simply hurt too much to hold himself straight anymore.
“What is it?” she asked, stepping closer so he couldn’t avoid her gaze, but not touching him.  “You’re hurt,” she stated without allowing for argument.  “Where is it?  Let me help.”
Killian sidestepped her, heading for the adjoining bathroom and already trying to make light of whatever still had him moving with tight care, his shoulders held high and tense with whatever was plaguing him.  “It’s nothing to worry about, Love.  Merely pulled a muscle as I hurried to the vault to reach Henry - and you, thankfully - in time.”
Emma watched him slip through the door, not at all sure what to make of his evasiveness, but knowing well he didn’t like to cause a fuss or trouble others with his own ills.  Shaking her head, she started after her pirate determinedly, having none of this suffering in silence routine when her True Love was injured and she could help.
When she stepped into the bathroom however, she was the one who gasped in pained surprise at the sight of her husband’s bare back before her as he leaned wearily against the sink. He had removed the dark shirt he’d been wearing, though the neat fiend that he usually was had not put it away in the hamper but dropped it on the floor haphazardly - that in itself telling Emma he was in pain.  The sight of his skin mottled a startling canvas of black and blue was what stole her breath.
“Killian...what?” She crossed the room in seconds to come up behind him, ghosting her hands over his shoulders uncertainly, wishing desperately to offer comfort, but afraid that any contact might hurt him even more. The muscles of his back rippled beneath her fingertips when she finally brushed over the marks as lightly as she could.
His head bowed, even as he sucked in air sharply through his teeth at her ginger touch.  As slowly and gently as possible, she ran water in the sink until it was warm enough for steam to rise and she slowly soothed it over the discolored skin, wincing along with him, but hoping the heat would relax the muscles what it could as well as clean anywhere his skin might have been broken.
Eventually, Killian’s tightened muscles seemed to release, and his voice murmured lowly, explaining how he had called and called her, knowing she would not have left town, but that something wasn’t right. He’d then been thrown against the rocks along the shore, lost consciousness, and woken up to find himself battered and bruised, and still lying right where he had landed.  He’d found them then, and she knew the rest.
Looking sad and guilty, Emma turned him, though he was almost boneless in her arms with the exhaustion of the day and its fading adrenaline, and cupped his scruffy cheeks in her hands to hold his gaze.  “I’m sorry, Killian.  So sorry.  I hate that you were hurt because of me.”
He shook his head gently, a weak smile quirking his lips.  “I’m not, Lass.  Not at all.  I’d bear anything for you.”
She shook her head right back at him, but bit down on her immediate retort.  She didn’t want him doing anything of the sort, but she also knew it was a battle she couldn’t win.  Killian would do anything and pay any price for her; he had long ago convinced her of that truth. Taking his hand instead, she led him back over to their bed and helped him to lie down on his stomach before crawling up onto the mattress beside him, leaning over him to painstakingly rub a healing liniment into his tender muscles from neck and shoulders down to waist.
If eventually the massage dissolved into more pleasurable activities, a sigh of satisfaction leaving him as he rolled over to turn the tables and trap her beneath him, well...that was just a happy bonus.
The bruises took a few days to fade from Killian’s skin completely, but they were marks he bore proudly.  And after that night together, knowing his pain had mostly faded, Emma couldn’t look at them without an echo of shivering pleasure and a secret smile.

The mideseason finale makes me think that knowing who writes/directs an episode does not really factor into whether the episode will be good or bad anymore, except for those who are notoriously bad at their job (*cough*NADIA*cough*). When you (gen.) prioritize making false incentives rather than thinking up a plot, you know your own work is bad. Now I'm not sure if Juan and Bradley being here around midseason premiere will be anything worth celebrating if they're given bad materials from their superiors because let's not mice the words, Andrew's work at 6x08 is terrible.
NGL I'm still mad over KR saying she'd write a musical episode so that she doesn't have to work. This and the clearly deceptive promo picture releases they have been doing is so infuriating. For the record, I'm still blaming Tim for leaving the show under KR's "care," but whether she has always been meant to be a scapegoat from the start or not, it doesn't diminish the fact that she's done an increasingly terrible job.
First, Nadia may not be my favorite writer, but I still think she showed promise in her early episodes.
Pinned had Michael pondering a future where he isn't around for his kids, especially Harry, who was only 10 when Michael's tumor was discovered. Eddie told Chim "Tomorrow isn't promised...so if you love [Maddie], tell her." Which Chimney did. Then Madney were able to work together to save the woman at the restaurant during their date. The ending set up the hostage situation at dispatch, which Nadia also wrote. I don't think many had complaints about that episode unless they don't care for dispatch-centric plots. 9-1-1, What's Your Grievance? had great work all around during the Buckley family "reunion". A mother people wanted to cuss out. A worried sister. A heartbroken son. And there was a bit of humor to be found re: Chim knowing the secret about Daniel and struggling to keep it to himself. Once it got to 4x11 and having to put TayKay front and center...idk, man. The quality went downhill. (Maybe because her strength is writing for Maddie?) The "Josh Begins" story wasn't awful, IMO, but was received poorly because Josh is a secondary character - as in, 'why are we spending time on this guy's background?' - that is *not* loved by everyone. If it was a story about Linda...probably a different reaction because fandom finds her more likeable. (Let's not forget that Kristen helped co-write that one! So she was on board with, if not suggested, Josh getting the spotlight!) The fact that it happened during an episode where BT was unavoidable...not helpful. People focused on that more than anything no matter whether they were applauding TayKay's "good looks" or cursing the show for bringing her back again. (Now that I've got that out of the way...) IA with you that knowing who the writer is/writers are doesn't hold as much weight as in previous seasons. We might be able to get an idea of what an episode will involve, but since Kristen's visions and the fandom's are miles apart, there's no guarantee that the final product will resonate. TBH, though I enjoyed the Eddie and Athena "detective work" the week before in Cursed, having an entire episode dedicated to one character that has no relation to anybody took me out of the story during the original airing. Taylor should have been given more to work with. (Sometimes running an expensive show is the opposite of a good thing. Gotta cut corners whenever possible.)

The Kettlemans are a ticking time bomb [aka, Kim's final dark turn?]
I came up with a theory yesterday about what the next couple of episodes might have in store, so I thought I'd jot it down for future reference. I think the key in the next episodes could very well be The Kettlemans. Speculation under the cut.
The Kettlemans are the biggest loose end in the whole plan to pass off Howard’s death as suicide. They are the only ones who know that Jimmy and Kim came up with the cocaine scam to ruin Howard. I find it highly suspect that they were brought back this season only to fail to fit in the McWexler’s scam, but still know enough to be dangerous. While Jimmy and Kim managed to shut them down and buy them out at first, I wonder if this will still hold up in the face of Howard’s “suicide”. I don’t think they would go to the authorities themselves about it; after all, why would they care? But there is someone who might go sniff around them: Cliff Main.
The Kettlemans went to Cliff to see if there could be a case with regards to Howard being under the influence during their legal troubles. Cliff must remember this, and, also, he always seemed at least a tiny little bit unconvinced that Howard could truly be an addict. Again, just as with the Kettlemans above, I don’t think Cliff would randomly decide to start poking around the Kettlemans of his own initiative. BUT… I think there could be a perfect storm of coincidences that might spur him into action at Howard’s funeral.
We know this is very likely to happen in the next episode: there is a promo photo of Jimmy in what looks like his funeral suit, and Howard’s wife (to whom Howard had said that basically all she hears about him is Jimmy's fault)  is supposed to be in the next episode. Cliff Main (who also knows Kim missed the meeting of a lifetime the same day as Howard’s death, and who was meeting with Kim during the Jag play of the scam) would undoubtedly be at the funeral, as well as Jimmy and Kim (officially the last people to see Howard alive), trying their best to hold it together and keep up the facade. All these characters converging is a recipe for disaster. I could very well envision a moment where someone (likely Kim, given her psychological state) slips up and says something suspicious, similar to Jimmy calling Jorge DeGuzman “Lalo” in court. THIS is what might spur Cliff (on behalf of Howard’s wife) to look into the Kettlemans.
And this is where I think things are going to turn dark: Cliff won’t make it to the Kettlemans, because Jimmy and Kim will get to them first and off them.** And this will spell Jimmy and Kim’s ultimate dark turn.
There is a lot of speculation right now about the events of 6x07 and 6x08 being the ones that spell the end of the relationship between Jimmy and Kim, so that Kim can drop off the radar and explain her absence in Breaking Bad, while Jimmy fully becomes Saul to cope with the pain. But I am starting to wonder whether that speculation is looking in the wrong direction. The interviews saying that “there is still room for Kim to fall”, that the final episodes are “provocative and psychologically disturbing”, that there was something about the moment where Kim realized she was going to gun down a complete stranger that you can’t come back from, seem to imply that the real direction of the story is Kim shedding the last of her moral compass, rather than realizing that their relationship is too dangerous and leaving for her own good. And this final dark turn could very well come about via Kim being the one who calls the shots on having the Kettlemans “taken care of” ***, in order to salvage the results of the scheme that cost her and Jimmy so much trauma (I can imagine the Kettlemans to be just small potatoes at this point for her, after all she endured): “You think you’ve lost everything? You have no idea.”
This can also explain a number of other things, like why Saul’s office has the inflatable Lady Liberty from the Kettlemans, and why Saul in Breaking Bad is not adverse to suggesting that witnesses who know too much could be “sent to Belize”, despite Jimmy having shown literally no inclination of being ok with murdering witnesses up until now. We would end up in a situation where these two have basically built a life from blood money, with a string of dead people to go along with it. And who knows if this is even the end? Will this turn into an endless domino? The Kettlemans deaths might silence the last witnesses, but, on top of Cliff’s pre-existing doubts, would look incredibly suspicious (not to mention, orphan two kids, who will weigh on Jimmy and Kim’s conscience too). Will there be more deaths? Will Jimmy and Kim have to constantly look over their shoulders to hold onto the fragile reality they created for themselves? Is this going to just lead to a train-wreck situation that will eventually force Kim to run?
This could also explain the quotes looking at the ending in terms of what Jimmy/Saul (and Kim) “deserve”, and why it might be a satisfying and hopeful ending, but not a happy one. This is not something they could redeem themselves from in one final episode; the road of atonement would be LONG, and probably never fully repair all the damage. (but one can still hope for a “El Camino” type movie someday - I do think they’ll both be alive in the end, and as long as there's life, anything can happen after all).
**I don't think they'd do the job themselves, of course. Mike would probably carry it out - he definitely would not be happy to have a loose end like that dangling around, because if the suicide play falls apart, then that will inevitably bring attention to Gus and the cartel.
***The other option is them using the Sandpiper money to buy the Kettlemans out. However, I think it would be unlikely as it’s 1) too repetitive of 6x02 and 2) I believe that money is what will be used to fully build up Saul Goodman and Associates to its final glory (house included, which I suspect will be originally purchased as Jimmy and Kim’s new home, before turning into the Saul mansion).

So, mid-season finale [SG 6x07]
Tumblr media
They basically made a bottle episode for a mid-season finale. Ambitious..?
Didn't quite work, imo... :| C'mon, people it's the last season! As much as I enjoy myself a nice character-study, sadly, personally, I feel even with Brainy and J’onn unaffected, it stretched itself too thin and missed the mark a bit...
Harry Potter / Dementor reference for the Phantoms was long overdue (sucking souls, bringing up fears, it even gets colder when they are near)
What was the point of the shield-meter protecting them from the outside Phantoms going down drastically into yellow after the 3rd(?) turbulence / the flash / in the beginning of Alex' and Kelly's parts (detail: it didn't go down on the main-screen) when the nightmares came from the Phantom in the containment unit?
...I really liked Lena making (only) Nia part of her vision ^.^ They made a good combo! (Although, the loss of the others was a deep-cut for her fear of losing people she cares about / ending up alone) - Oh, and Lena was the only of the four who figured out it was a vision / nightmare and applied Kelly's advice. Smart cookie.
Also, Lena facing the water-monster like Ellen Ripley the xenomorph queen; difference being who turned be the mother (I did think it looked like Kara still with her bangs at first, tho...)
Kelly sorta applied her own advice by reminding herself of everything real about Alex and their relationship
So, with the Phantom locked back up, only Kelly and Lena faced their fears. With Lena by actually looking at her fear come to life (and it transforming into the underlying memory of her mother) and Kelly overcoming her passiveness and using a shield and being kick-ass (future female Guardian?). Alex learned a lesson of sorts, still, and went through with the self-sacrifice. Nia mostly self-confirmed her already existing issues of failing in the most horrible ways...
I'm thinking, the picture on the thimble was meant to show the white flash striking the Tower-Ship, and the thimble itself how Dreamer still can't interpret things right ('a desired result not being met' according to online dream-analysis, which sounds much more fitting than Nia's interpretation and failed attempt at sewing with her powers) - that said, sadly no new revelation on that end... Her powers work just fine, and maybe instead of fearing to fail, she should try find ways to learn the skill.
...balloons ARE scary. Don't you want a balloon, Georgie?
Kara had like 4 minutes screen-time in the episode about her return... (Didn’t actually clock it, but sounds about right)
The Tower-Space-Ship is bigger on the inside :)
The Tower-Ship needs a name. SIDRAT? BigBen? Spotlight? Headliner? Huh, I like headliner... >.>
So, I guess Zor-El was Kara's touch-stone? (Eh, did he do another "until you came along" speech? Supercorp shippers will know what I mean. Now it's awkward...)
Gotta love the detail, that Kara's scratches on her neck are immediately healed after the yellow-sun bomb ^.^
While Kara super-speeding to Alex was awesome, I feel deprived of a group-hug :(
After having spent a larger amount of time in the Phantom Zone (yes, time may “not pass” there, but it’s still duration, since ppl inside are moving; meantime, several days passed on Earth) the promo for 6x08 shows Kara jumps right back to work? ...let’s hope, there are some repercussions. You know, just a tad of realism? Our girl’s been horribly traumatized 20 times and some in her life... She could book out Kelly for life.
If this episode had happened at any other spot during the season, I would maybe have given it a 6/10. But it being a mid-season finale kinda makes it rather disappointing. I am not even taking into account anything Supercorp, because I 100% did not expect anything on that front to happen anyways. Even with the episode plot being wrapped up nicely, this arc's plot ending felt rushed and like a side-note... no emotional pay-out.
--> And THAT is why I am disappointed with the episode. Not because of shipping. But because, objectively (or at least in my best objectiveness), this episode was not what it should/could have been. Stretched too thin, a misplaced bottle-episode (which are a skill to master), a filler-episode even (a whole different episode-filling plot squeezed in the middle of the rescue-Kara arc - anyplace else can be a good/interesting idea, but is disconnecting at the finale of an arc). Maybe the original script was much better? But, taste differs. I hope, others enjoyed it much more than I did.
I still love the characters and the actors are doing a great job. And while I have some misgivings on Kara jumping back right in after everything that happened, I do LOVE the show for the fun stuff (uncle Archie?) and Kara supering :) So, after one and a half third season of drama, I can’t help but look forward to what the promo promised! \^o^/
