Kaiju Week in Review (October 22-28, 2023)
youtube
Another Godzilla Day, another short from Kazuhiro Nakagawa to keep the series' tokusatsu roots alive. Fest Godzilla 4: Operation Jet Jaguar will see the grinning robot battle the King of the Monsters in live-action for the first time ever. I think that's why seeing the Final Wars Godzilla opposite a replica Jet Jaguar suit is even more surreal than his bout against the Showa Gigan last year. When the short drops on November 3, be sure to download it ASAP, because Toho doesn't like to keep them up for long.
Tumblr media
I already posted about the unbelievable Movie Monster Series Bagan figure revealed last night, but it was accompanied by four more new figures: a glittery MinusGoji, an 8-inch black Kiryu, a quadrupedal Landing Stage Hedorah, and this year's fan poll winner, Flower Beast Form Biollante. The Kiryu is a homage to a theater-exclusive figure from Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, though it actually has more paint apps. They're all Godzilla Store exclusives.
Tumblr media
TOHO Visual Entertainment has released Godzilla (1954) and Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) on 4K, the first of a flurry of Godzilla titles debuting in 4K this year. (There's also a Blu-ray for each that uses the same 4K restoration.) The people I turn to for judgment on these things (@spacehunter-m, @tohocompanylimited-blog, and a few others) aren't thrilled, especially with Mothra vs. Godzilla, which compares unfavorably with the HD version of the shorter Toho Champion Festival cut. Both are improvements over what was previously available on home video, but that's not saying much.
Mothra vs. Godzilla unfortunately does not include the Frontier Missile scene as a bonus feature. (Don't know what all those nice-looking screenshots of it from the recent Mothra vs. Godzilla Completion book were about then.) It does offer eight-and-a-half minutes of unused effects footage, some of it making its home video debut, as well as four more minutes of set footage and a theater showing the film. Both films offer a ton of trailers, the most interesting of which is an export trailer for G54. Some of the ballyhoo ("incredible titan of terror!") would later be used for the U.S. release, and @biorante discovered that the subtitles are a near-exact match with the old BFI DVD. So it's possible to almost exactly recreate what the film would have looked like when it screened in, say, Honolulu in 1955.
Tumblr media
This is strictly local news, but I know some of you are fellow upstate New Yorkers, so I'm throwing it in anyway. Rochester's Little Theatre will be showing Destroy All Monsters on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This'll be the first Godzilla film I've seen there since Rialto distributed the original in 2004. The runtime and release date match the AIP version, so fingers crossed they landed the same 35mm print that screened at the Mahoning this summer.
Big week coming up, though even bigger if you live in Japan. For the Americans reading this, a reminder that Godzilla 2000 is in theaters the night of November 1.

Mi-17 4K-15214 of doomsday cult and terrorist organization Aum Shinrikyo.
In 1992, Aum Shinrikyo established a foothold in Russia with the assistance of Oleg Lobov, a politician in the newly formed Russian government who sought assistance from Aum's leader Shoko Asahara for the funding of a new Japanese school in Russia. Kiyohide Hayakawa, with the help of Lobov, was able to make connections within the Russian defense apparatus. He, along with a delegation of other Aum members, received training from Spetsnaz units, acquired a number of Soviet military manuals that had been translated into Japanese and managed to procure a brand new AK-74 assault rifle. The rifle was successfully smuggled back to Japan and was used as a model for Aum's own production of the AK-74 at a secret Aum weapons factory in Kanazawa.
Tumblr media
Kiyohide's group also returned with 4K-15214, a 1992 manufacture Azerbaijani Mi-17 military transport helicopter painted in flash white. Kiyohide's group carefully documented their exploits in Russia, and a recording of their expedition eventually fell into the hands of Japanese police officials. It is viewable (in part) in this Japanese TV documentary: https://youtu.be/bFwpKPNdLCM
Originally manufactured for the Soviet armed forces under the registration number CCCP-152, the helicopter was transferred to Azerbaijan Air following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Re-registered as 4K-15214 in civilian service in Azerbaijan, Aum legally imported the helicopter to Japan in 1994.
4K-15214 was intended to be used as a delivery system for chemical weapons over Tokyo, presumably using modified crop dusting equipment. Aum also purchased two radio-controlled helicopters (apparently under the codename "Hercules") with the goal of using them to remotely spread Sarin or other chemical agents. After both of the Hercules helicopters crashed during testing, Aum appears to have given up on the aerial spraying of chemical weapons entirely, instead opting for less complex methods.
Early attempts to spray Sarin utilized pesticide sprayers, but these proved unreliable. Aum eventually used a modified refrigeration truck to spread poison gas, but when this also failed to have the desired effect, individual cult members were selected to deliver the agents by hand. On March 20, 1995, members of Aum entered the Tokyo Metro carrying liquid Sarin in plastic bags wrapped with newspaper. Each Aum member laid their pouches in predetermined locations before puncturing them with the tip of an umbrella. The poison gas flooded the cramped train cars and subway tunnels killing 14 people and injuring hundreds more. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Japan's history and the deadliest act of chemical terrorism ever.
Investigators immediately suspected Aum Shinrikyo was behind the attack. Shortly thereafter, members of the Japanese police and Self Defense Forces (including members of the JGSDF's 1st Airborne Brigade) personnel raided Aum's headquarters in Kamikuishiki, where they unearthed not only Aum's weapons-of-mass destruction production facility, but 4K-15214 as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Mi-17 was seized by police, partially disassembled and left in storage outdoors for some time while the trials against Aum progressed. In 1998, 4K-15214 was sold (at a low price) by the Japanese government to Djibouti and reregistered as J2-MAW. It entered service with the Djibouti Air Force (DAF) in 2001. It was repainted in a dark green at some point after the transfer, and now bears a desert scheme.

I don't get it, isn't PreCure supposed to be a show aimed at children? Why would you want them to touch upon these mature topics?
Yes, it is aimed for children. However, children aren't dumb and entertainment aimed at them shouldn't be taken so lightly.
I would've expected all of that p*do bullshit to happen in a seinen Magical Girl series, like Prisma Illya or something... not on a standard Magical Girl series from a recognizable company. Toei should at least have some decency.
"Chill out, it's just an anime!", you may say, but Toei Animation was the one who paired up minor-aged girls with older men, so I suggest that you direct your complaints at the company, not me. If this is the path we're taking, these mature topics should be addressed with the nuance and seriousness that they deserve, for they aren't your average crisis of the day/week that can be easily solved with the Power of Love & Friendship. Things like p*dophilia and power imbalance cannot and should not be romanticized. Don't sugarcoat that shit.
Just because Sailor Moon has done it and was a success, that doesn't mean it'll work now. These are different times, and people know better now.
Hell, even Tokyo MewMew New seems to acknowledge how unhealthy Ichigo and Quiche are as a couple.
Tumblr media
Look at how poor Ichigo struggles when she's at his mercy. Quiche's gestures are clearly unwanted. I sincerely hope to see Zakuro obliterate his twinky elvish-alien ass in Full 4k HD 1080p when Season Two airs.
If you want a better alternative, I strongly recommend @rockybloo's Glitter & Guilt. At least the heroine and the bad boy have a history together, and are on the same page about their relationship (though it's hella ironic, since the author was heavily inspired by Ichigo and Quiche...)
And the thing is that PreCure has the capacity to touch upon these things. Mind you, the first season of the new decade, Healin' Good PreCure, involves a chronically ill pink lead prioritizing her well-being and outright refusing to help a villain who has done nothing but gaslight her and take advantage of her kindness. She says "no", sticks to her word, defeats the villain, and the narrative doesn't paint her as any less of a hero for it.
Imagine the many possibilities that can be explored with a PreCure season aimed for adults. Adult animation is often reduced to either sensacionalistic violence or doom 'n gloom, often paired up with mediocre designs, subpar animation and tropes that have aged like milk. Its audience is rarely allowed to have fun with something colorful and vibrant.
Not to mention that the IP is now 20 years old, its audience has grown with it. If Ojamajo Doremi could have an OVA with adult protagonists, then why not Pretty Cure*?
Personally, I highly doubt that they'll ever change the endings for these problematic seasons (I mean, Japan has a deep-rooted problem with l*licon/sh*tacon), so this is all wishful thinking. I'd prefer an animated adaptation of MagiLumiere instead of an existing IP that isn't popular on the West, but we all can't have whatever we want unfortunately.
The Pretty Cure will have to do for now, I guess. And I'll have no other choice but to keep my expectations low, to avoid being disappointed in the long run. I can't handle any more disappointments in my life...
*I mean, Sailor Moon's reaching its endgame in June of this year; Toei should start focusing on their other Magical Girl IPs and advertise them properly to the West.

Heroine's Welcome
Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.
An event consisting everything about idols. From the very music that was playing in the background, the rhythm games involving their music, several special performances, vendors consisting of items centered around the idol nature, and.. a multitude of meet-and-greets of popular idols wishing to meet their fans.
But one thing seems to be out of the odd there. One person wasn't even an idol, not anymore. With her voice stolen, they were now the Champion of Japan, a top-caliber hero or heroine with a ton of faith carrying on their shoulders, defeating the forces of the international evil known as the Desolation.
Fumiko Arai, formerly the number one idol, stood by a stand and a wall consisting of her name and beautiful aesthetic, with many of her merchandise, including special ones such as her "ultimate shine!" ultra-HD DVD, one of her finest performances amongst all hers performing on the biggest stages in the country, recorded in 4K and 60 frames per second. Many who attended the event were very eager to see her. Cameras flashing towards her, people taking pictures with Fumiko with her signature angelic grin, quick chats with the likes of her, and the purchasing of merchandise.
Tumblr media
There was an extensive line right in front of her stand, with groups of other people surrounding it. The former idol and now Champion did her best to greet fans as much as she could.
