I often find myself imagining a Wreck it Ralph 3 where they go all Spiderverse with each game world having its own distinct look and feel and I can't help but feel the early home computers would be a gold mine for unique and interesting art styles.

Look at this awesome timeline of the connections between video game history and paleontology themes.

okay if I'm being honest a top five silly farscape moment TO ME. is when John is like Oh Yeah one of my ex girlfriends is actually defined in my mind purely by the time we went to a mirror maze once. and they're in a maze and he yells Hey JULES is this making you HORNY!? like. john she just wanted to go to a maze once on a date I think. probably because you were teens and she just wanted a private place to be together. your ex girlfriend probably didn't have a fetish for mazes. maybe she did though. if she really did then I want a show about HER life.

dreaming up a syllabus for an imaginary course on metanarratives about gameplay, which i think would go something like:
unit 1: who do you think you are i am - auto-documentary & games
Vlogs and the Hyperreal, Folding Ideas
The Slow Death of Let's Play Videos, Meraki (to ~10:00)
World Record Progression: Mike Tyson, Summoning Salt
ROBLOX_OOF.mp3, hbomberguy
Life as a Bokoblin: A Zelda Nature Documentary, Monster Maze
optional: Braindump on the History of Let's Plays, slowbeef
unit 2: what like it's hard? - intro to challenge narratives
Chapter 26: Games as Narrative Play: Two Structures for Narrative Play, Rules of Play
A different kind of challenge run: Minimalist 100% (BOTW), Wolf Link
Surviving 100 Days on Just Dirt, Mogswamp
Can You Beat DARK SOULS III with Only Firebombs, the Backlogs
Is it Possible to Beat Super Mario 3D World while permanently crouching?, Ceave Gaming
The Pacifist Challenge - Beating Hollow Knight Without Collecting Soul [CHALLENGE] - Sample
optional: How to 100% Snowpeak Ruins in under 15 minutes, bewildebeest
unit 3: nelly you don't understand, i AM the narrative - form and function
The Future of Writing about Games, Jacob Geller
Can You Beat GRIME Without Weapons?, the Backlogs
Mushroom Kingdom Championships, Ceave Gaming
My Life as a Barber in Hitman 2, MinMax (Leo Vader)
MyHouse.WAD - Inside Doom's Most Terrifying Mod, PowerPak
optional: Mega Microvideos, Matthewmatosis
the theme and structure is mostly intended to introduce at least one critical or historically contextual work followed by examples of the type of narrative in question.
in unit 1, this is the idea of "How do people talk about their own experiences in the context of YouTube and playing video games?" across three rather different kinds of documentaries. unit 2 is intended to take that lens of who is telling what tale and dial in on challenge running, where i first noticed the way some videos turn the story of overcoming a challenge into its own narrative that is distinct from but related to the narrative events of the game itself. unit 3 circles back to the bigger picture with a variety of examples that, to me, are maximally metanarrative, the emergent story of the player-narrator now functionally replacing the game's embedded narrative.
bonus unit: broken narratives
Glitch & the Grotesque at the MLA, Sylvia Korman
Watching time loop movies to escape my time loop, Leo Vader
The Stanley Parable, Dark Souls, and Intended Play, Folding Ideas
Breaking Madden, Jon Bois
The TRUTH about the Pizzaplex in FNAF: Security Breach, AstralSpiff
this one is highly underdeveloped, but i'd love to work out something more robust building on randomizer challenges that produce intentionally bizarre, semi-ironic "lore," and bois-esque endeavors to break games so hard the story itself crumbles. but that's really out of scope so i'm just including the links to things i couldn't bear to get rid of. more rambling abt the challenge runs I chose under the cut.
Challenge runs represent one of the most obvious places to start, due to being extremely plentiful and having a hook that makes a "here's how I did X thing in Y video game" format almost unavoidable. Minimalist 100% is an underrated and sweet straightforward example that I mostly include as a baseline for reporting-out style narrative; here are the facts, here's what happened, this is the thing that it is. Mogswamp's 100 Days on Just Dirt is similar in style, but the physical measuring of days is a delightful and, more importantly, external narrative device.
Now oriented, we get a taste of Ceave Gaming's narrative approach to Mario challenges with the no-crouching run, and while we still aren't at the degree of player-characters being constructed for the narrative's sake, the spirited belief in crouching sets the stage for other rhetoric in more extreme cases we'll see later.
The Backlogs' entire body of work qualifies here, but GRIME is the strongest inspiration for putting this list together. I include the DS3 firebombs run because what was initially a factual description of how his wife's use of firebombs inspired him to play differently in the original DS1 firebombs run has developed into full-blown multi-game narrative arc with the Firebomb Goddess (his wife, who also voices the character) compelling his in-game character to achieve his destined quest. Grime takes that even further,
In-Game Documentaries
I include Life as a Bokoblin mostly as a contrast to My Life as a Barber - there is a level of fictionalization and roleplay involved in the Zelda in-game documentary that highlights exactly what I want to single out when I am talking about metanarrative, the story about a story.

If they planing on working on the story mode for that’s not my neighbor, I thought that once you done doing your doorman work or finish you’re playthrough, you get to the rpg section when you can freely move around and explore some places like you’re own house, the apartment when you work at, the outside world, the D.D.D buildings and etc. and you can talk to people in the rpg section and sometimes they can give quest at some point? Probably not tho. Maybe there’s some events and parts when there’s a doppelganger out of nowhere that you have to kill or some kind? something like the resident evil series with the monsters and uninspected monsters that try to kills your?
I have a thought that it might be a Maze game first person pov like for example smile for me or burrito galaxy 64? Maybe the human characters can be 2D while the doppelgangers are 3D or not?
Just a little personal idea I have in mind about the story mode

Ok here we go, because I want more pressure I guess? I make no promises, no guarantees on anything, but I am open to trying.
My fic meme tag
I love writing final girls, slashers, monsters, unhealthy dynamics, femslash, character studies, monster romance, and sometimes even just random little crack drabbles/minifics. I don’t feel comfortable with OCs/reader stories, and I won’t write Caleb/Rachel from Skinwalkers. Also no Nick from The Mummy.
Skinwalkers
See No Evil
Hellraiser (original or remake continuity)
Nightmare on Elm Street (ditto)
Friday the 13th (again ditto)
Freddy vs. Jason
Candyman
The Haunting of Hill House series
The Fall of the House of Usher series
The Howling (specifically the first or the fifth)
Don’t Breathe
The Invitation (vampire movie)
Saw
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Platinum Dunes or 3D)
Thir13en Ghosts
Ghost Ship
Hell Fest
I know What You Did Last Summer
Trick ‘r Treat
The Mummy (honestly...any of the mummy movies with that title)
Dracula Untold
The Bride of Frankenstein (or something based on the Bride's HHH maze at Universal)
If there are other horror fandoms you’d be interested in prompting me you can always reply/send me an ask and I’ll let you know if I think I could give it a go!

Scarab of Ra
Scarab of Ra seems like the quintessential 3D roguelike…at first. Sure, it’s a randomized trek through blocky, mostly-featureless hallways, and yes, permadeath is almost a certainty. However, the game rejects one of the key components that the genre has come to expect: combat. To create a greater emphasis on inventory-based problem solving, there are no traditional RPG stats, nor is there an experience system. Playing like a marriage of Rogue, 3D Monster Maze, and a point-and-click adventure, Scarab of RA takes a decidedly western approach to adventuring: perseverance won’t make you stronger, it’ll only wear you down until you can’t go on.

i think i was so lucky in the 3ds version of rf4, i triggered memories instantaneously after the ending and found a lvl 80 or so staff and hammer in sharace maze by just entering, looking for the closest chest room and teleporting out, i wiped the post game with those two >∆<
seriously you can get great stuff in the first chest room of sharance maze (or even in random chests if you get locked in a monster room), it's kinda broken, you just gotta know how to doge attacks and bail when it gets bad

I've got 170 hours in Rune Factory 4 on Steam (on top of my playthough hours on the original 3DS release and Switch port) and by golly I WILL 100% this game eventually. ...even if I will continue to play it inefficiently.
Already had to learn the depths of the weapon upgrade mechanics but it hasn't been enough to get me through the Sharance Maze so I GUESS it's time for me to delve into the depths of monster taming and stat upgrading them.

VESSELED IS OUT
https://electrodev.itch.io/vesseled
VESSELED is a 3D first person horror game where you can either see your surroundings or move completely blind, only being able to see a faint memory of what you last saw
The game consists of 3 mazes where you have to collect various jammers and get out as soon as possible, all while a cryptic monster roams and follows anything it hears
