1 hour before the ceremony.

Rooster fixed his tie with less nervousness than when he got married, flip,tug, pull, it’s done. He takes a look at himself, then fixes his collar before he runs his fingers through his hair. Beatrice was getting done outside, letting him know she was checking on the kids while he busied himself.

He inhales, running his hands down his crisp white shirt and then exhaling once he was done looking at himself. It’d be fine. He knows that, it’s just another promotion in his life…a promotion that, honestly he always hoped for but now it was hard to imagine.

Lieutenant-Commander.

Fuck.

He clears his throat, tightening his belt around his waist as he tugs his white pants up. He just looks outside the bathroom window, seeing the loose leaves falling from the trees. It was October after all,seasons were changing…and he kept looking. He just stared at it, time went by so fast, he made peace with Mav, then met Bea, they dated then got married and now had three kids…and his oldest was one year old already.

He just flexes his hands, then looks back at his reflection. His tie was crooked…damn it.

Rooster let out a frustrated sigh as he reached up to straighten his tie once more, the fabric feeling unfamiliar and stiff against his fingertips. He couldn't shake the nerves that prickled at the back of his neck, the weight of the impending ceremony bearing down on him like a heavy burden.

Lieutenant-Commander.

The title still felt surreal, a dream he had always imagined coming true. And here he was, on the brink of achieving one of the highest ranks in the military.

But with the excitement came a wave of apprehension, the fear of the unknown creeping in as he stood there alone in the bathroom. What if he wasn't ready for this level of responsibility? What if he failed to live up to the expectations placed upon him?

Rooster shook his head, banishing the doubts that threatened to cloud his mind. He had worked too hard to let self-doubt derail him now. He had proven himself time and time again, rising through the ranks with enough determination and stubbornness it’d put a mule to shame.

As he stared at his reflection in the mirror, Rooster couldn't help but feel a swell of pride in his chest. He had come a long way from the young recruit who had first stepped foot into the Navy all those years ago. He had faced adversity head-on, overcoming obstacles and challenges with resilience and…well, enough perseverance he wouldn’t lose his mind.

And now, as he stood on the cusp of a new chapter in his career, Rooster knew that he was ready. Ready to lead, ready to inspire, ready to make a difference in the lives of those under his command.

And his tie was still crooked. “Fuck.”

“Roos.” Bea knocks on the door, “You okay in there?”

Rooster's heart skipped a beat at the sound of Beatrice's voice,and he took a deep breath, willing himself to push aside the lingering nerves as he turned to face the door.

"Yeah, babe, I'm okay," Rooster replied, "Just... struggling with this damn tie."

Beatrice's gentle laughter echoed through the bathroom door, her warmth seeping through the cracks as she spoke. "Let me help you with that," she offered, her tone filled with affection.

Rooster felt a rush of gratitude flood his chest at Beatrice's offer, the weight of his anxiety lifting slightly at the thought of her by his side. He quickly undid the knot of his tie and opened the door, stepping out into the hallway to find Beatrice waiting for him with a soft smile.

"Thanks, gorgeous–woah.," he widens his eyes, leaning back to see her full outfit. A beautiful,beautiful, dark red sheath dress that hugged her curves like a vice and went down to her feet,lace cap sleeves on her shoulders and her soft brown hair pulled up into an elegant bun with tiny little pearl pins keeping it together “...damn, look at you.”

Her cheeks reddened under the peach colored blush, and she gives a little turn, “Do I look nice?”

Rooster's breath caught in his throat as he took in the sight of Beatrice, his heart skipping a beat at her beauty. He couldn't tear his eyes away from her, the way the dress clung to her curves in all the right places, the way her hair was pulled up, the way her eyes sparkled with warmth and affection.

"You look absolutely stunning, Bea," Rooster breathed, his voice filled with awe. "Like a vision."

Beatrice's cheeks flushed even deeper at Rooster's words, a shy smile tugging at the corners of her lips. She fidgeted with the hem of her dress, suddenly feeling self-conscious under Rooster's intense gaze.

"Thank you," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "I wanted to look nice for you, for this...for your big day."

Rooster's heart swelled with love at Beatrice's words, his chest tight . He reached out to gently cup her cheek, his thumb brushing over her soft skin as he leaned in to press a tender kiss to her lips.

"You always look beautiful, Bea," Rooster whispered against her lips, his voice filled with love. "But tonight, you've outdone yourself. You take my breath away." he holds up his hand while clasping hers, “One more turn?”

She laughs but obliges, giggling as she turns and he immediately whistle quietly, furrowing his brows with an appreciative ‘woo’ under his breath, “Stop.” she playfully swats his chest, “I’m here to help you with your tie,LC.”

Rooster couldn't help but chuckle "Sorry, sorry," he said with a grin, "I just can't help myself when I see you looking so beautiful."

Beatrice rolled her eyes affectionately, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she reached up to adjust Rooster's crooked tie. She worked quickly and skillfully, her fingers nimble as she deftly straightened the fabric and tightened the knot.

"There," she said with satisfaction, stepping back to admire her handiwork. "Perfect."

Rooster smiled gratefully at Beatrice, feeling a rush of gratitude wash over him. "Thanks, babe," he said, his voice filled with appreciation. "You always know how to make everything better."

Beatrice's smile softened, her eyes shimmering with love as she gazed up at Rooster. "I just want everything to be perfect for you," she replied softly, her voice filled with warmth. "You deserve the world, Roos."

"I already have everything I need with you by my side," Rooster murmured against her skin, his voice filled with sincerity. "You're my guiding light. I couldn't do this without you."

Beatrice's eyes shimmered with tears at Rooster's heartfelt words, her heart overflowing with love for him. She wrapped her arms around him, pulling him close as she buried her face in his chest - thant god for setting spray or else his white shirt would be ruined -, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her fingertips.

"I love you, Roos," Beatrice whispered, her voice barely above a whisper. "More than words can express."

Rooster held Beatrice close, his arms wrapped protectively around her as he pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "I love you too, Bea," he whispered back, his voice filled with emotion. "More than you'll ever know."

“More than I’ll ever know?”

“Yes ma’am.”

She smiles, looking back at him and cupping his cheek, “The kids are alright, watching tv with Mav,right now. He got here early.” she says ‘And I came in to check on you…how are you feeling,Roos?”

He leaned into her touch, his eyes meeting hers as his brows furrow "I'm feeling... nervous," Rooster admitted, his voice tinged with uncertainty. "But also excited. This is a big moment for me, and I want to make sure I do everything right."

Beatrice's eyes softened with understanding, her fingers gently brushing against Rooster's cheek in a soothing gesture. "You'll do great, Roos," she reassured him, her voice filled with confidence. "You've worked so hard for this, and you deserve every success that comes your way,remember?"

“I know,gorgeous.”

“Good.” she smiles, smoothing his shirt a bit, “Now, remember, inhale,” she inhales for emphasis, “Exhale, smell the flower, blow the candle.”

Rooster chuckled softly at Beatrice's reminder, her calming presence helping to ease the tension that had settled in his chest. "Right, right," he replied, taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly. "Smell the flower, blow the candle."

Beatrice smiled, her eyes shining with pride as she looked at Rooster. "That's it," she said softly, her voice filled with encouragement. "You've got this, Roos. Just take it one step at a time."

“I know,Bea," Rooster said gratefully, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

Beatrice smiled, her heart swelling with love for her husband. "You'll never have to find out," she replied softly, her voice filled with warmth. "Now, we still have some time before we leave.” she says, “Is there anything else I should know? That my parents should know?”

Rooster leaned back slightly, back touching the sink, considering Beatrice's question. He appreciated her concern and attention to detail, knowing that she always had his best interests at heart. "Hmm, well," he began, tapping his chin thoughtfully, "I don't think there's anything else they need to know specifically. But if they have any questions or concerns, I'll make sure to address them."

Beatrice nodded in agreement, her expression thoughtful. "That sounds good," she replied, her voice soft. "I just want everything to go smoothly for you, Roos. You've worked so hard for this moment, and I want your special day to be perfect."

“It will, you’ll be there,right?” and he winks and her insides melt.

She just huffs softly, playing with the little necklace he gave her - the movement making his eyes lock on the shining pendant, “I’m kinda nervous myself.”

“You are?”

“Yeah,I mean,’ she shrugs, “I…just want everything to go well for you…and I want the kids to be okay too,I…I just don’t want to mess anything up.”

Rooster's smile softened albeit his brows were worried and he reached out to gently cup her face in his hands, his thumbs brushing against her cheeks as he looked into her eyes.

"Hey, it's okay," he murmured softly, “You’ll do fine.” she grumbles quietly, “Hey,gorgeous,you won’t be alone there, Mav will be there, as will Shells and the Daggers. You’ll be okay.”

“...what do I do if some…Admiral's wife comes to talk to me?”

Rooster's smile widened at Beatrice's question, touched by her vulnerability. He could see the apprehension in her eyes, and he wanted nothing more than to ease her worries.

"If an Admiral's wife comes to talk to you, just be yourself," Rooster reassured her, his voice gentle. "You're charming, witty, and intelligent. Just engage in conversation like you would with anyone else. And if you're unsure about anything, you can always lean on me or Mav for support."

Beatrice nodded, her expression softening as she absorbed Rooster's words. "Okay, I can do that," she said with a small smile, "Thank you, Roos."

Rooster leaned in to press a tender kiss to Beatrice's forehead, his heart swelling with love for her. "Anytime, gorgeous," he murmured, his voice filled with warmth. "I'll always be here for you, no matter what."

“I know.” she sighs, then looks back at the window, “...do we need to be fashionably early?”

Oh she was still worrying.

She’s so cute.

Rooster couldn't help but chuckle at Beatrice's concern, finding her adorable in her worry. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close as he pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

"You're adorable when you worry, you know that?" he teased gently, his voice filled with affection. "But no, we don't need to be fashionably early. It's better to be on time than to rush and stress ourselves out."

Beatrice smiled up at Rooster, her worries easing at his reassurance. She leaned into his embrace, finding solace in his comforting presence. "Okay…if you say so LC.”

“I know so.” he smirks, “...it’ll be fine. it’ll be okay,Bea. If you feel uncomfortable, then we can leave as soon as my ceremony is done.”

“...I don’t want to do that though… I mean unless the kids want to go and–”

"Okay, then we'll stay for as long as you feel comfortable," he agreed, his voice soft and reassuring. "But just know that if you ever need to leave, we can do that too. Your comfort and well-being are my top priorities, always."

"Thank you, Roos," she murmured, her voice filled with emotion. "You always know how to make me feel better."

Rooster pressed a gentle kiss to Beatrice's forehead, his heart swelling with love for her. "That's what I'm here for," he whispered, his voice soft and tender. He looks back at their reflection in the mirror and for a brief second…he was sure he saw a speck of blonde hair moving on the glass.

-Embers, (they/them,) A Fox that is always on fire, is actively annoyed about it, as the ashes and Soot keep getting everywhere. It takes a bit of concentration to force the flames down, so they mostly wear clothes out of wool and other flame-resistant materials. Smells like fireworks. Tries their best to keep it together. Is the main OC I draw and the PFP :3

-Patch, (He/Him) A wolf, with an eye clawed out. He don't seem that bothered by it. He likes to wear a flower crown, simply because it smells nice. Likes to stop and smell the flowers. Is keeping it together.

-BT0Z-113, (She/Her) A Protogen. She worked as a mercenary for hire, doing odd jobs, until a mishap forced her into a much different world than she was used too. Smells like pennies.

Today in Black Excellence: Shirley Chisholm, the first African American—and the first woman—to seek nomination for President.

“I want history to remember me... not as the first black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of The United States, but as a black woman who lived in the 20th century and who dared to be herself. I want to be remembered as a catalyst for change in America.”

Chisholm wanted to be remembered as a “catalyst for change.” What did she do?

Shirley Anita Chisholm was a politician, educator, and writer. There would be no Barack Obama or Kamala Harris without her—she was a trailblazer in every sense of the word.

Citing her “double-handicap” of being a Black woman, Chisholm initially rejected a political career but became increasingly engaged in fighting racial and gender inequality. She eventually joined the Democratic Party in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, winning a seat in the United States Congress in 1968, and becoming the first Black woman to do so.

What did she achieve in politics?

With a seat at the table, “Fighting Shirley” introduced over 50 pieces of legislation on behalf of the poor, protesting racial and gender inequality. She became a fierce critic of the Vietnam War when opposition to the war was considered radical. Her outspoken assault on injustice earned her few friends in the white political establishment.

While campaigning for the 1972 primaries, Chisholm was allowed only one speech in televised debates and was otherwise blocked from participation. Despite this, students, women, and minorities proved loyal supporters: In 12 primaries, she garnered 152 (10%) of delegates’ votes, despite a poorly financed campaign and widespread political hostility.

The 1972 primaries also displayed her remarkable character, when she chose to visit racist and segregationist Governor George Wallace of Alabama in hospital after a failed assassination attempt.

After retiring from Congress in 1983, Chisholm taught at Mount Holyoke College and co-founded the National Political Congress of Black Women.

Today in Black Excellence: Maya Angelou—a literature titan whose 1969 memoir was the first nonfiction bestseller by an African American woman.

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” —Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

What was the early life of Maya Angelou?

She became a celebrated writer and Black icon, but it came from a childhood of tragedy. Born on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, Angelou was quickly exposed to racism as a child. Her parents split when she was young, and while visiting her mother, aged eight, she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend: her uncles killed the boyfriend in revenge. These horrors left Angelou mute for five years, as she discussed in an interview with Oprah, a close friend. At age 16, she gave birth and was forced to work grueling jobs to support her son—including fry cook, sex worker, and nightclub performer.

She recounted her traumas to close friend James Baldwin—fellow writer and Black icon. He challenged Angelou to write about her experiences, and she published the wildly successful memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. It catapulted Angelou to international stardom and was nominated for a National Book Award in 1970. It remained on The New York Times’ paperback nonfiction bestseller list for two years—the longest record in history.

What made her such a Black icon?

Angelou was a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated on her birthday in 1968. Angelou stopped celebrating her birthday for years afterward. In 1964, Angelou helped another activist friend Malcolm X in founding the Organization of Afro-American Unity.

Spanning over 50 years, she published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, books of poetry, and plays. Her 1971 poetry collection, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ’Fore I Die, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Because of her tireless work in literature and political activism, Angelou became widely respected as a spokesperson for the Black experience, particularly of women. You can even find her legacy in your pocket—she recently became the first black woman to appear on a US quarter.

Today in Black Excellence: Dapper Dan—the underground fashion icon who made history as the first Black designer to receive CFDA’s lifetime achievement award.

“I don’t give a damn about failure. I was born part of failure. We are the phoenix—all of us here in America, every black man, woman, and child are part of the phoenix, still rising from those ashes. All my life is about getting knocked down and getting back up. I don’t care. It’s fun!”—Dapper Dan.

What’s Dapper Dan’s story?

Born Daniel Day on August 8, 1944, in Harlem, New York City, into a working-class family. By 13, he was making thousands a day after teaching himself gambling. By the 70s, Dan first sold items out of his car, and in 1982, the iconic Dapper Dan’s Boutique had its grand opening —open 24/7.

Dan is self-taught—from his fabrics and leather printing, to his creations of unique textiles featuring Louis Vuitton and Gucci logos. His designs became synonymous with 80s hip-hop—but Dan was neglected by the fashion world, and his illegal use of major label logos led to police raids. Local attention became Global; European luxury fashion companies like Fendi caught wind and promptly took legal action. Dapper Dan’s Boutique was shut down in 1992. Ever the hustler, he continued working underground.

How did he come to win the CFDA award?

Ironically, to say the least, and on his own terms in true Dapper Dan style. Fans were outraged when they noticed Gucci steal one of his classic designs for a major show. The coat was first made for Olympian Diane Dixon, and she posted on Instagram: “Give Dapper Dan his credit. He did it first in 1989!” Incredibly, Gucci accepted its wrongdoing and sparked his career into new life when it offered a partnership.

At age 77, he made history as the first Black fashion designer honored with the CFDA’s Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. He is also the first designer to receive the honor without ever doing a solo fashion show. Truly the epitome of Black excellence.

There’s a quote by Faith Cummings that says, “We still struggle to garner a seat at the table. Even though we’ve oft built the table ourselves.” As a Black Creative, this is a reality many of us face. And Dapper Dan is a modern representation of just that—Black Excellence. He exemplifies how and why our contributions to culture often define culture. Week 5; Digital Citizenship

Week 5 surrounded a discussion on what it means to be a digital citizen and the online interactions with political participation and discussions.

Social media and the digital communities that exist online can have powerful impacts on society and its politics. Choi, et. al (2021, p.366-367) notes that engaging in digital citizenship has promoted better democratic practices and political web-based activity establishes social circles that deliver information to those who may not otherwise be educated enough to access it. Furthermore the article highlights that engaging as a digital citizen helps individuals compare and collaborate with the exchanging and arguing of political discourse, events and ideas.

The rise in digital citizenship has led to an increase in political activism. Vromen, A (2017) argues the use of media platforms has reshaped the way citizens participate in politics. Media assets like hashtags, reblogs, retweets and GIFs are becoming increasingly influential in shaping public opinion and political discourse (p. 4).

Wilf, et. al, supports this argument and showcases the impact that media can have on disadvantaged individuals. By engaging with digital citizenship these immigrants have engaged with online political activism leading to a successful increase in eligible voters participating in western democratic societies like America particularly in the 2020 presidential campaign.

"Many young immigrants use social media to follow news in their local communities, as well as in their countries of origin. They also use it to organise protests and encourage others to vote" (Wilf, Castro, Quiles, 2022).

The article drew on the author's research papers which highlighted the significance of twitter advocating awareness for organisations such as 'United We Dream'. The organisation aims to connect US immigrant youths and spread awareness through online platforms. Trends found in their sample research shows that 18-23 year old voters engaged with politics almost entirely online.

Choi, et. al (2021) attributes digital citizenship to bettering intersectionality, with social media's ability to bring together marginalised and oppressed voices, that share commonalities of showcasing diversity and advocating for equality, to educate groups on ‘participatory democracy’ (p.363-364).
