We are not only plural online.
We Willows are the most common fronters, and we switch among us several times a day. Two of us, Crystal and I Sunni, are in therapy, and both of us discuss our mental health issues weekly with our therapist, who is also helping us Willows switch out more often with the rest of our system so we can avoid burnout.
Varyn fronts about half of our work day three days a week, and fronts a few hours a week at home to work on his music composition and to help us tidy up. He's also trying to make friends of his own. He also talks with our therapist sometimes, especially regarding his grief about his partner in our partner system being dormant for the past few years.
Aery fronts first thing in the morning several days a week to write out our to-do list and track our budget, then recedes to the back to nag us to drink more water and to stretch as needed.
Jas fronts at work a few hours a week, often works on our UI/UX Design coursework, and often edits our writing and helps with worldbuilding for our fiction.
Ameris fronts a few hours a week to help with our coursework and getting things done off our to-do list, and likes to play Stardew Valley and other cozy games. She's also studying Buddhism.
Aery and Varyn often hang out with our brother. Aery especially likes playing tennis with him, and Varyn is the little prince of music-sharing.
We watch movies and TV together as a big group. We're working on dividing up our 1000+ liked songs playlist on Spotify into smaller playlists based on mood and fronter.
We all suffer from depression, though it affects different ones of us differently. Most of us struggle with anxiety. Many of us have PTSD from childhood abuse and trauma that we experienced, and some from trauma that we experienced as an adult. We deal with triggers which affect different ones of us differently. We have physical health issues that affect us all.
We disagree on a lot, but we don't fight hardly ever. We work together to make big life decisions.
And we're always, 24/7/365, a plural system.

⸻ LEGACYWRAPPED ( 2023 )
Happy New Year, LGC! So, turns out I just hit BK's 1 year as a muse! And not only that, this is also the first time since joining Legacy that I've been able to hold onto a muse this long ( in fact, since I've been roleplaying I don't think I've been able to stick to one character for more than maybe... 6 months? if even that tbh #flaky ). So to kind of ~ commemorate ~ the day, I threw together this edit to highlight BK's top 5 activities in 2023. I'm pretty proud of the dude seeing as how neither one of us really thought he would make it this far lkasdgsdg. Anywho, thanks to everyone I've plotted and written with this past year for making this a fun 365 and can't wait to dive into more shenanigans in 2024!
So, why these in the top 5*?
LGC Spring Boys ➫ First official project as a Legacy trainee! The entire experience was still a bit surreal, but he's grateful to have been chosen for the lineup. From filming their variety show to performing original songs, it made all the practice leading up to it worth while. ( He's also spent quite a few Sunday afternoons playing laser tag to get his aim up after that brutal loss on the show. He refuses to face a repeat in 2024!!! )
Debut Bootcamp ➫ Although BK wasn't selected to join any of the senior groups this round, he had the chance to really improve his dancing skills during the training intensives and see what it truly takes to be considered debut-ready. And he enjoyed it SO much more than running around some boat with babes and sneaking into the waterbomb festival last summer. Honestly, he did. Seriously. Really -
LGC Family Concert 2K23 ➫ First family concert where he wasn't just another trainee in the crowd. Spring Boys' "Hot" performance was most definitely his favorite this year. Report and flag every video uploaded of him doing aegyo on stage during the finale please and thank you!
LGC Studios ➫ Appeared on @lgcxnoeul's Legacy Hall and @lgcseojin's Noraebattle! Variety is something he's grown to love over the past year, and there's nothing better than being able to goof off with your bros during work hours. He might even consider hosting his own show one day, who knows.
PASSION5 ➫ Who knew drawing some shades on a gingerbread house would lead to him ending the year with his first modeling contract? For the longest Byeongkwan was pretty vocal about his disinterest, but this collaboration has really helped warm him up to the idea of taking on more endorsements in the future - and loading up on those tasty pastries! That he... didn't taste test.. before filming - ( don't tell tell the staff @lgchayoung ).
2023 was fun! Same time next year?
*Honorable mention to the legacy musical since "those knight costumes were fire."

Hi Cossette! I've been spending the last few days gathering some 2024 media releases that I hope to check out this year and I'm looking forward to (to name a few!):
Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett
A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal
The Mars House by Natasha Pulley
The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden
Faebound by Saara El-Arifi
and ooh! I'm also very intrigued about Allison Saft's upcoming adult debut!! I hope it will be good 🙏
I also prefer standalones! While there are times where I'd love to revisit my favourite worlduilding + characters, I tend to find the storytelling & character development more properly fleshed out within a standalone (comparing to books within a long series).
That's totally valid! It certainly took me some time to get into Alix E Harrow's writing - not that's it's poorly written (it's very artfully written), but it's pretty dense and the story pacing is on the slow side. Also as much as I enjoy taking notes / annotating beautifully written prose, I feel you effort required to analyse the writing 😅
Speaking of The Starless Sea, the aesthetic / vibes of the book reminds me of Taylor Swift's Midnights - very atmospheric and with a strong focus on storytelling. I've been meaning to make something showcasing parallels between songs from Midnights & sections of The Starless Sea since late 2022 (this was pushed back for various reasons), so I was very happy to post the edit today :D
If you could assign your favourite books as music albums (based on thematic / aesthetic similarities), how would you pair them up?
P.S. Yes!! I love the album & vinyl artwork for Kali Uchis' new album and I hope you have the chance to listen to Orquideas later this year! (and I hope you all the best with the 365 albums challenge 💖)
hi jennifer!!! i have an arc of a tempest of tea, but i don't know if i'll get around to it before publication date 😭 i'm really intrigued by the premise, but struggled a bit with the fantasy in we hunt the flame (i struggle a lot with fantasy/have to be in a very specific mood for it)! i haven't read any of katherine arden's stuff, but have seen a lot of it on the internet over the years; maybe i'll check it out!
i feel like a common question i see on bookstagram is "what's your favorite series" and i always struggle to answer this because i am just not a series girlie! i think the few favorite series that i love (that aren't duologies) are probably either the raven cycle, or series of romance books that are set in the same universe but follow different characters so they essentially operate as standalones! i wish i was a series girlie, but i just ... am not one. i actually just put alix harrow's ten thousand doors of january on hold on libby — it might work better for me as an audiobook! sometimes i do better with fantasy via audiobook than physically reading it, for some reason.
i saw your starless sea/midnights gifset and am obsessed. i know i've told you this before but i loveeeee your gifsets so much, especially the ones where you find parallels between things!
oh this is so hard! i feel like it's easier to assign specific songs for me, rather than entire albums to books, but here goes:
beach read: honorable mention to emails i can't send by sabrina carpenter (title track) for january's relationship with her father, but unsure of what album would fit january/gus best!
normal people: i think either sam fender's seventeen going under, or noah kahan's stick season? i think both albums have a similar theme of being homesick and also home sick, which i feel like plays a big role in the plot of normal people!
honey girl: i feel like paint my bedroom black by holly humberstone? like the themes of growing up / moving away / being lonely / figuring out your life?
the starless sea: maybeeeee evermore but this does not feel like a good fit to me still!
les miserables: ... going to cheat here and say the les mis cast recording
i'm still stuck on portrait of a thief, and book lovers though! what about you? what book/album pairings do you have in mind?

258: Nic Jones // The Noah's Ark Trap
Tumblr media
The Noah's Ark Trap Nic Jones 1977, Trailer
His performing career cut short in a traffic accident at age 35, his back catalogue entombed in legal wrangles, Nic Jones enjoys the legend of a musician more often spoken of than heard. Jones’s final album, 1980’s Penguin Eggs, is one of the small handful of true masterpieces of the English folk revival, a maritime journey through traditional song driven by Jones’s percussive, slapping fingerstyle guitar and curlicued vocal melodies. It’s also the only one of his records that’s stayed more or less in print since its release, meaning that it has completely overshadowed the rest of his catalogue (outside those collectors with the cash or pluck to track down the increasingly pricy original editions anyway).
As a listener who has obsessed over Penguin Eggs for years, I was shocked to find an unpriced copy of 1977’s The Noah’s Ark Trap in a local shop and, after some haggling with the good-natured proprietor, walked out with it for a song. I’d heard it a few times back in my music blog .rar downloading days and I recall liking it, but since I’ve had an actual copy for my table it’s steadily grown in my estimation to the point I’d rank it the near-equal of its more celebrated younger sibling. The LP contains a similar mixture of lengthy story songs (“The Golden Glove”), bawdy cautionary tales (ode to cum “The Wanton Seed”), blazing fiddle reels (“Miles Weatherhill”), and aching ballads (“Ten Thousand Miles,” perhaps the most moving thing he ever recorded). As on Penguin Eggs, Jones plays with minimal accompaniment (six of ten tracks are solo endeavours), giving the music a lonely grandeur, like a bard narrating the sunset of an age. These are songs of ancient heritage, and while Jones’s style bears the marks of the contemporary revival (and particularly the influence of Martin Carthy) he makes no concessions to pop. There is only this man with his pure and earnest voice, the guitar he’s poured the work of a lifetime into mastering, and visions of forests and green pastures that will endure till the rocks melt and the seas burn.

get to know me! better! tag... thing!
i was tagged by @jinxddiaz (thank you!! 💖), and i did in fact already do this one, but it’s fun and i think i can drum up some different answers this time, so here we go again:
three ships: i’ll try for three different ones from last time, so - john/rodney (sga), hardison/parker/eliot (leverage), and uh. gonna sound very niche here, but billy tallent/joe dick, because they’ve been stuck in my brain since my last hard core logo rewatch.
first ever ship: i feel like i need to give a different answer for this too, and the only thing i can come up with right now is rosa/neuz from the hoe overleef ik (“how do i survive” - do not read hoe as hoe, my english speaking friends, these are books for kids) series by francine oomen. which. that’s digging deep.
last song: as of the time of writing this, 99 luftballons by nena! in general though (and in this case too), whatever was playing last in the top 2000, which makes me wonder, do... other countries... have a six day twenty-four hour a day music marathon of the democratically voted 2000 “best songs ever” on the public broadcast radio every year starting at christmas and ending right at midnight on new year’s eve, traditionally with bohemian rhapsody by queen playing as the #1 song right as the slightly too early fireworks are starting to go off all around you? or is that... not a thing?
last movie: woman they almost lynched!! which was a DELIGHTFUL surprise, in the sense that this is a movie from 1953 and i don’t think we’ve made many (if any) westerns with THIS MANY WOMEN in them in the almost 70 years since. it’s not perfect, and the overall message about gender roles is pretty messy and contradictory (especially by modern standards), but it’s FUN and very worth checking out if you’re curious about Ye Olde Western Movie: Women Are People Too Edition.
currently reading: these words i’m typing ha-ha ba-dum tsss. no, uh. still very slowly @redgoldblue’s advent calendar and also... a particular fic of mine in preparation for ?hopefully?? soon updating it with another chapter, and then maybe even another one after that. (i’m being vague about this as if i’ve written more than one multi-chapter fic on ao3 ever. i have not. the two year hiatus between chapters should tell you why, probably.)
currently watching: uh, well. two more movies, and then i’ll have reached my 365 goal for the year (though upon closer inspection, i have no clue how letterboxd is counting these) which i only recently set myself. (i’m thinking the last two will be arsenic and old lace & blazing saddles.)
currently consuming: nothing, but i had some of the chocolate my grandmother gave me for christmas earlier. <3
currently craving: the day i’ll finally stop coughing. it’s not covid, but it’s not fun either way.
i’m not tagging anyone, because i already did a round for this exact list of questions recently, but as always, if you think this might be fun, do it and tag me! i also think that would be fun!

CLEM: ...Not that I'm knocking the nacho cheese ones - I like the taste. It's just the texture I can't deal with. So gritty. Kinda hurts my tongue, so I'd give 'em... a seven. *Maybe* a seven-five and you think this is dumb, don't you? DAWN: No! No, as taste tests go, this is definitely one of the better ones I've been to. CLEM: I get it. No biggie. You wanna play cards? DAWN: Clem... CLEM: I can be a real boredom-buster, if you just give me half a chance.

2023 Postmortem: 10 Questions
Tumblr media
Phew, 2023 is almost over and I for one am glad to see it go. Considering I felt last year was one of my more difficult years, 2023 must have thought I was throwing down the gauntlet and decided to up the ante. Various points throughout the year saw me reach my breaking point. Somehow I was able to pull myself back from no return, but at a great cost to my mental and physical self.
This has been one of the hardest ten-question pieces I've written as I was trying to find a good balance of talking about the difficult parts while also making sure to find the positive points that happened - no matter how short it felt like.
Buckle up, it's going to be a ride of sorts.
Author’s Note: If you are new to this or want to take a look back at previous pieces, you can click on the links here: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.
What made up your body of work this year? Which parts are you most proud of?
95 percent of my work this year was for the day job. Whether was researching various specifications for vehicles, dealing with various issues from customers, or determining what we needed to be keeping an eye on down the road in terms of features. Most of the year has felt like a slog with a neverending list of vehicles coming in and a shrinking staff that felt like we couldn't keep up. I felt even more drained than last year.
Towards the end brought some much-needed good news. A few new people came to our team and brought down the workload by a large amount. At least it doesn't feel like we are playing catch-up anymore.
A bright spot for the year was being added to our internal news service editorial staff. This allows me to help in the process of publishing stories by doing copy edits and going over changes with co-workers. It also allows me to keep my writing skills somewhat sharp.
Speaking of writing, there was barely any of it for the year. This year's ten-question piece is the first thing I have really written for 2023. It comes down to me not having the spark or desire to write anything. I haven't been lacking ideas. The past year in the automotive has been fruitful with electric cars making inroads, questions about fuel economy and affordability, autonomous driving, Tesla, and more. Yet, I haven't any desire to take these ideas from the head and put them out there in the world.
What were your top 5 moments of the year? Being added to the editorial staff for our internal news service Seeing both of my parents retire Taking time off to help me recharge Spending a bit more time playing video games Making some inroads on finding a new job
(It was difficult trying to figure out the top five as it felt like a lot of the year was filled with so many negative things. Trying to scrounge up any good moments is quite hard).
What are you really glad is over?
I don't have a good answer to this as I have several things up in the air as 2023 comes to a close.
How are you different today than you were 365 days ago?
My mental health has been on a roller coaster of sorts. I'll have good days where it seems nothing could go wrong, and days where I find myself in the murky depths, wondering if I will be able to get out. I had many of these days throughout the year whether due to news, personal, financial, or other items. This explains why I spent a lot of my time in my apartment, sitting or lying down. Didn't want to have others experience the cloud of darkness. I know this is the opposite of what I should be doing - going out, visiting friends, and experiencing new things. But when you're caught between the rock and hard place, and no easy and quick way out - very difficult to get out.
If there is a bright spot, it is how much quicker I have been able to spot myself falling into the spiral and pausing it. I may do some journaling, go for a walk, listen to some music, or lie down to help reset myself. The more I catch myself going into a depression cycle, the easier it becomes to get out.
My usage of social media has gone down drastically throughout the year. A lot of this can attributed to Elon Musk's decisions on the service formally known as 'Twitter'. I have stopped posting there since late Spring after setting up accounts on BlueSky and Mastadon. I find myself using BlueSky more as there more people I follow from 'Twitter' who have come over. But it isn't the same as it once was and I cannot fully put my finger as to why.
Is there anything you achieved that you forgot to celebrate?
How much progress I have been making on the job hunt. I started this in earnest back in late Spring. While most of the opportunities I have applied for have either not gone anywhere or picked a different candidate, I have started to feel more at ease with writing out cover letters and presenting my best self during interviews. It still is quite stressful and takes a lot out of me. But with what I have learned throughout the year, I think the job hunt in 2024 will prove to be fruitful.
What have you changed your perspective on this year?
That it is ok to take a break from the news. Considering how this year has felt like a raging waterfall of news seemingly breaking every hour of each day, I had to significantly cut back on the news. I may read a summary of what happened during the day or just go dark, depending on my mood. I may not be as up-to-date as other people, but it does make me feel less like impending doom is coming.
This year has also brought forth how lonely I'm been since COVID-19 made its way to the U.S. It oddly stemmed from me binging many Unsolved Mysteries hosted by Robert Stack. The music and Robert Stack's presentation sent chills down my spine as they did when I was a young kid. I needed somebody to bring me back down to earth and comfort me. It's a ridiculous way to find out you're still dealing with loneliness, but it helped put it into perspective. I've only seen my co-workers only a few times this year, and have only talked with a close friend of mine throughout the year. The remaining friends haven't heard a peep from me since last year or more.
There is something you are taught when you start off in computer security; finding a balance between security and convenience. It boils down to determining the right amount of lockdown and ease of entry into a given environment. For example, requiring only one key to enter a vault full of gold makes it very convenient for a person to get in, but it also makes it very tempting for someone to rob. On the opposite, having seven different locks requiring a different way to open a house makes it very secure. But it also makes a pain in the butt when you're trying to escape a rain storm or worse.
I've realized that I have been focusing a bit too much on security for myself while negating the convenience aspect of being around people. I had good reasons as to why, but it also made me feel more lonely as time went on. Figuring out how I can best protect myself while trying to be more personable is a goal for next year.
The last thing I have learned throughout this year is that I cannot force myself to write. This was something I did a lot when I did freelance writing. No words being put on a digital sheet of paper meant no money to keep living. The downside to this was a major loss in quality and originality, something I would attribute to why I lost many assignments and gigs throughout my freelancing life.
Despite wanting to write as I mentioned earlier, I had no motivation or desire to force myself to pull words out of thin air. I realized that I still haven't fully recovered my writing skills to a point where I felt like I could start posting stuff regularly again. I don't know if writing will become a part of me as it once was years back, but I still have that desire to get my thoughts out there in the world. Maybe some writing rehabilitation through practice prompts and journals will help in the new year.
Who are the people that came through for you this year?
I have to give a big thank you to my family who helped me through some difficult times throughout the year. Also worthy of thanks are my therapist, the people who I talk to on BlueSky and Mastodon, and some close friends.
What were some pieces of media that defined your year?
Super Mario RPG
I remember playing the Super Nintendo version of Super Mario RPG and being charmed by its story, characters, and music. The recent remaster for the Switch only amps the charm. I spent a good couple of weeks playing and growing attached to the characters and wanting to see how the story went. When the 'the end' screen came up, I almost started a new playthrough. I may pick this game back in 2024 just to experience the joy again.
Unpacking
A game about unpacking various items and placing them throughout various rooms? Seem a bit tedious for a game, but it works so well. You're being told a story of a person through various moves during their and items. The varying locations and amount of items to place give you an idea of where this person is in their life and dreams and hopes. An idea that seems crazy when you read the description, but works so well when you play it.
Satisfied Mind by Jon Regan
youtube
When this song came up during my Discover Weekly on Spotify back in the Summer, it hit me in such a way that I cannot fully express. The lyrics of the song are a guide to what I hope to accomplish down the road.
Honorable Mentions: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom; The Case of the Golden Idol; Amen by The Heavy; Ancient DOS Games on YouTube; the Unf*ck series of books by Dr Faith G Harper; The Honjin Murders by Seishi Yokomizo.
What will you be leaving behind in 2023?
I don't have a really good answer for this prompt. A lot of the issues that came up in 2023 are going to continue into the coming year. At least I have some ideas to make them more bearable as I hope to leave them in 2024.
What do you hope to accomplish in 2023?
Originally, I was going to put [REDACTED] for the various items I hope to accomplish. This allows me to claim whatever I do in the coming year as one of the items on the list. Ultimately, I decided to scrap this idea for the time being. Instead, here is a small list of items I hope to work on in 2024.
Exercise: I was able to do a bit of exercise for a fair chunk of 2023 and it made me feel better both in terms of physical and mental health. Then I stopped doing it for various reasons, and my health has taken a bit of a tumble. Getting an Apple Watch for Christmas has reignited my desire to get back into exercising. Going to start slow to get myself back into it before I start to ratch it up.
Money Stuff: I made some headway on this at the start of the year by monitoring how money was being spent. That's all I got to without starting to set up a plan and I just ended up not monitoring it. This would prove to be a bad idea as unexpected issues came up such as replacing the front suspension on my car and draining my bank account. I'm going to start back monitoring my money, along with figuring out a plan to where I can cut back on some spending items and start stashing more money.
A new gaming computer: I was able to finally replace my old MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Air. It is really nice in terms of size, performance, and quietness. Now, I need to figure out a replacement for my current gaming PC. It is getting up there in age and will shut off when playing newer games. Whether I decide to build one or do a pre-built from somewhere is up in the air at the moment.
There are some other goals I would to accomplish like finding some time to travel and working towards a new car, but these depend on various factors like trying to find a new job to jump-start them.
I thought 2023 would be the year where I would be able to make some progress in various areas. But it turned it to be one of the toughest years to date. There are many things I haven't mentioned either because they were too personal or I am still working out how to talk about them. I find it tough to be hopeful at the end of this year and to look forward to the next considering what lies ahead - the next presidential election being a key item.
But I do know that I want 2024 to be an improvement over 2023, and to get there, I need to put in a fair amount of work. But also give myself time to rest and comprehend. The Christmas break for me has been spending a lot of time sleeping to try and regain some sort of energy,
Fingers crossed that 2024 works out.

Hi Cossette! Happy 2024 and I hope you're having an enjoyable year so far 🎉
Speaking of 2024 albums, Kali Uchis' Orquideas came out today & I found it very refreshing - normally I listen less to R&B / Latin Pop albums in full but Kali's new LP is very cohesive! As of upcoming music releases, because most of my favourite artists released new albums last year, I find the 2024 release schedule considerably more quiet. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to new albums from: Bleachers, Faye Webster, Allie X, and Madi Diaz!
Also fingers crossed that we'll also get new music from Sabrina Carpenter 🙏
As of fantasy books, I currently have two physical books with me: Starling House (Alix E Harrow) and The Tethered Mage (Melissa Caruso). It's been a challenging time for me to read books electronically (the only device I electronically read on is the same device that I use for academia), so I really like being able to unplug & read something physically 💖
And ahh The Starless Sea is a perfect winter read ❄️ I rarely re-read books myself, but this is one of the few books that I revisit from time to time! My copy isn't with me right now as I'm still abroad, but I'm working on an edit inspired by this book so I've been slowly re-reading it on my computer.
Amongst the upcoming book releases, which new books / series are you most looking forward to reading? And do you tend to prefer standalones or series?
P.S. I'm looking forward to hearing Laufey performing Haunted & Letter To My 13 Year Old Self live!
hi jennifer!! happy 2024! i hope your year has been off to a great start 🤍
i haven't listened to kali uchis' new album yet, but i keep seeing these stunning vinyl pressings for it in one of the vinyl groups i'm in! i'll probably listen to it at some point for my 365 albums in 365 days challenge. i didn't realize allie x has a new album coming out; i'm so excited! and new bleachers so soon. i'm really hoping we'll get new sabrina music, although i'm not looking forward to fighting for tickets if she does another tour.
i read and didn't love 10 thousand doors of january, but i've heard really good things about alix harrow / a lot of my friends like her stuff, so maybe i'll give her another shot! i've also been struggling with reading books electronically as of late (although i don't read on the same device i use for work), which is why a bunch of my arcs have piled up 😵‍💫 i haven't actually touched the starless sea in a few days; i feel like annotating takes so much more time / effort / energy (which ... makes sense) but i'm hoping to get back to it soon 🤍 i can't wait to see your edit!!!
i tend to prefer standalones — or duologies! what about you? i'm really excited for the new ashley poston (a novel love story), a banh mi for two by trinity nguyen (a bit biased! i read an early draft of it), a dark and downing tide by allison saft (love allison saft! very excited for her adult debut!), a witch's guide to magical innkeeping by sangu mandanna, anatomy of a betrayal by grace d. li (loved portrait of a thief/her debut + have been eagerly awaiting her next book), the dark we know by wen yi lee (also biased! read an early version of this! but it's loosely inspired by spring awakening <3), and of course, emily henry's funny story (although i read an arc of it already so it feels like cheating!). what about you?
speaking of laufey, i finally bought bewitched on vinyl yesterday! it should be here sometime next week; i'm so excited to listen to it on vinyl :")

44: Fates Warning // Perfect Symmetry
Tumblr media
Perfect Symmetry Fates Warning 1989, Metal Blade (Bandcamp)
As a teenager I almost certainly would’ve called prog metal or thrash my favourite genre of music, and I spent a lot of time listening to icily produced chops demonstrations in the vein of Fates Warning’s Perfect Symmetry (though, even as a head, I never cared much for this record in particular). I’ll pause here to play a game of Remember Some Guys.
Remember Some Guys (Prog Metal Edition)
Remember Watchtower?
Remember Anacrusis?
Remember Mekong Delta?
Remember Crimson Glory?
Remember Flotsam & Jetsam?
Remember Thought Industry?
I remember those guys! Anyway, Fates Warning at one time were considered one of the “Big Three” of ‘80s/‘90s prog metal, alongside Queensrÿche and Dream Theater, but the years have rendered them much more of a cult act (see: FW’s 26,000 Spotify listeners versus over a million each for DT and the ‘Ryche). I can think of a couple of reasons for this. Their early albums sound like straight up and down ‘80s traditional metal, if a group of guys had broken all its limbs with a set of golf clubs. The songs have huge, starry-eyed choruses, flashy solos, and some timeless riffs, but they jerk around at odd angles, thwarting the simple headbanger who just wants to gallop. As they moved through the ‘80s and ‘90s they reinvented themselves multiple times as first ur-technical Guitar Center porn (see: Perfect Symmetry), then mellow Queensrÿche-adjacent crossover hopefuls, and finally into a darker-hued sound influenced by latter-day King Crimson, Tool, and Peter Gabriel. A lot of their back catalogue is actually pretty good, but this restlessness (and leader Jim Matheos’ increasing taste for grey moods and flat melodies) soon saw them fall behind their peers in sales and influence.
youtube
Back to Perfect Symmetry. As you’ve probably gathered, I think this album sucks. Even when they were singing about giants and sorceresses, ‘80s Fates Warning never met a simple pleasure they weren’t compelled to complicate with bonkers time signature and tempo shifts. Sometimes those bait and switches and hairpin turns could be thrilling, as on the thrash-influenced numbers on No Exit, their previous album. Here though, you can practically see the band screwing up their faces (and their songs) into expressions of intense, tortured profundity. Everything fun about the band goes out the window in favour of plodding tempos, groaning pseudo-philosophy (sample: “Men of grandeur / blinding, numbing / with winsome wiles in specious styles”), and pointlessly busy playing that sounds like they arranged it using a circuit diagram. This also was not a good look for vocalist Ray Alder, who often gambles with the key when he shouldn’t.
I picked this album out of a dollar bin a few years ago out of old loyalty to the band and, given that it now fetches a decent little sum, I’m sure I’ll part with it eventually. But I’ll close with some words of praise for a band I’ve enjoyed a lot over the years: after Perfect Symmetry, Fates got this particular bug out of their system, and they never really returned to this style. Matheos in particular had a cool renaissance in the 2000s, and I’m very fond of his collaborations with Chroma Key’s Kevin Moore as OSI and his initial reunion with original Fates vocalist John Arch in 2003. Eh, in a 40-year career, they won’t all be winners right?
