Writer's Life: Weekly Progress Update
Remember when I said that I hoped this week was better? Well, it was. This week, I started and finished a new fairy tale short story that I actually really like. I celebrated Halloween with my family and built a haunted house out of gingerbread and candy while watching movies. I got really good feedback on a story I'd submitted to my critique group --so that's always nice. And then I started NaNoWriMo. Very quickly into the process, I was reminded that I am working on a 2nd draft, which means I have to take more of an thoughtful approach when I add scenes or remove scenes than I would if I were just working on a 1st draft. But overall, I think it's going well so far.

Fire in the Highlands
There's a fire in the Highland.
Smoke, on the horizon.
Daddy's in his bed,
wee Scott beside him.
We don't own the land,
the hills we've been raised.
The sheep or our lives and
they need grass to graze
Daddy's in his bed,
smoke filling his lungs.
Scott's screaming beside him
come morn' both found dead
There's a fire in the Highland.
Smoke, on the horizon.
Ash stains my breath
and I wish for the highland

12,239 words into the second draft, and still a quarter of the second chapter to go. These chapters are getting longer than intended. I may want to split them up a bit once I’m done.

Writer's Life: Weekly Progress Update
This week was wonderful and amazing, and a lot more challenging than I thought it would be. Thanksgiving was so much fun. I may not have ended up writing or exercising as much as I wanted to, but I got to spend a lot of time with family and friends, and I got to learn quite a bit as well. I learned a lot from the podcast that I listened to about plotting, and I can feel my knowledge of the craft growing sharper.
While I'm learning a lot, the actual words on page part of my writing work is still flailing a bit. I fell even further behind on NaNoWriMo and there's no chance that I'll win at this point. Regardless, I'm still going to continue to write and try my best to muddle through this chapter to wrap up the week.
We are now firmly in the season, where the daylight hours dwindle and there's never enough time to work, write, exercise, and do all of the holiday activities. So we'll see how December goes.

I Go First • Nov. 2023
It is beyond our concept to recover.
The hole goes right through our exposed
nerves, and below it lies a thin layer
of ice that anesthetizes the wound.
Skin intrudes into skin. Cities topple
off of glaciers into the sea. For months we
fed on the damage as the melt threatened
total collapse.
We drill to the break. When the water arrives,
I go first. I melt into my suit and gloves,
take our last freezing hour, dive through
that unstoppable opening.
Poetry assembled from a National Geographic article on melting glaciers.
