#22nd tien I miss you

Chiaotzu’s villain arc starts with someone trying to teach him math
REAL REAL. I can imagine Tien dramatically suggesting he just clog his ears whenever someone starts saying numbers so he wouldnt need to be evil anymore

Krillin: Gave up training and is weak enough for bullets to hurt him. Literally weaker than he was in early Dragonball. Then he goes on one adventure with Goku and is super strong again. He even beats Gohan in a sparring match via ring out. Tien: Has never stopped training throughout his entire life and was always the strongest human in Dragonball and Dragonball Z. Is currently weaker than Roshi, an old man who retired from fighting in Dragonball. (cont.)
Tien has always been my favorite human character simply because he’s the most serious about being a fighter. What kind of message is that by making him weaker than Krillin and Roshi? Fuck hard work because either you’re lucky or you’re not?
I can understand some frustration here, but I feel like you may be missing the forest for the trees.First and foremost, you’re a bit off on some of your information.Krillin was not weaker than he was in early Dragon Ball. Krillin was hurt by a bullet for the same reason that Goku was hurt by a laser ring in Resurrection F. Despite being in a dangerous scenario, being aware of his surroundings, his body had been completely emptied of ki and thus left vulnerable. He was out of practice, but not “weaker than early Dragon Ball”.Secondly, Tien was not the strongest human in “Dragon Ball Z”. From the moment Tien first appeared through to Namek, Krillin was outpacing him in terms of gains made when they were all off training. Each time they gathered again, the gap between the two was comparatively smaller. Krillin finally surpassed Tien while on Namek, and this has been consistently stated and reinforced by both Toriyama, Shueisha, and Toei.THIRDLY, Tien has a life outside of training. The idea that all Tien does all day every day is train, is exclusively the product of anime filler. Tien actually has a small farm that he lived on with Chiaotzu, and then opened up his own dojo and became a teacher besides. He’s not out there on a Super Grind like Goku and Vegeta are, and people do have limitations.Roshi, for example, actually hit his peak power long ago. His most recent improvements were in gaining control of his more perverted nature, and in increasing his stamina so as to hold his full-power state longer. He is not, however, definitively stronger than Tien. By any means.Krillin also didn’t get stronger through “one adventure with Goku” He got stronger by overcoming his anxiety and PTSD, removing his mental blocks and getting control of his fear rather than letting it control him. Once he did that, once he learned to calm his mind and focus that, it removed many of his blockages, yes, but even then he still had to train intensely for nearly a year before he got to the level he was at for the ToP. Him besting Gohan was hardly a feat of strength either. It was strategy. It was him using his skills to his advantage to beat an opponent stronger than himself.Tien is in no way undermined by any of this. In fact, his contributions in the ToP were both important and quite heroic. (If you want something that REALLY undersells Tien, look no further than Toyotaro’s manga). His arc was never really about being the strongest though, but about redemption, forgiveness even for yourself, and taking on the responsibilities of helping the next generation avoid the path you started down and setting them on the proper one. Heck, Tien opening the dojo is actually a bit of fulfillment of Roshi’s words to him back when they fought at the 22nd Budokai.Tien’s not the strongest human, but he’s not necessarily meant to be. His arc is something else, and I’d say he’s fulfilled it quite well.

Dragon Ball Z 153
Tumblr media
Perfect Cell Saga!  Well, actually, that’s a misleading title, since Cell spends about half of the arc in his semiperfect state.   He absorbed Android 17 last episode, so now all he has to do is absorb 18, and he’s all set.    So why doesn’t he?   All he’s gotta do is climb out of that hole and grab her.
Tumblr media
Oh yeaaaaahhhhh...
Tumblr media
Basically, Piccolo was the world’s only hope of keeping Cell away from the androids, and when he fell, #16 stepped in to hold the line, and when he failed, Tien decided he had no choice but to do whatever he could to buy a little more time.   Tien was no match for Imperfect Cell, let alone Semiperfect Cell, but he does have the Ki Ko Ho, also known as the Tri-Beam.    We’ve only seen him use it a few times.
The first was when he destroyed the tournament ring while battling Goku in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai.   Tien’s reasoning was that if there was no ring, Goku would be forced to land out of bounds and lose the match.   The whole time he was setting it up, Chioatzu was horrified that he would go to such an extreme, and Master Roshi observed that it was the sort of technique that drains the life of the user.   As far as he was concerned, the fact that the Crane Hermit taught such a move to Tien was proof of how evil he had become.   The key point, though, is that the Ki Ko Ho was much, much stronger than the Dodonpa or the Kamehameha.
The second time Tien used it, it was in a desperate bid to kill Nappa.   By then, Chiaotzu had already died in his own suicide attack, and Tien was exhausted and missing an arm, so I’m pretty sure he figured he had nothing to lose.  He died from the strain, and Nappa survived, although he seemed to think he might have been in danger if he hadn’t noticed it coming at the last second.
Tumblr media
Now, we’re seeing Tien use the Ki Ko Ho repeatedly, against a live target.    I think this is important to note, because Tien’s been training throughout all of DBZ, but this is one of the few signs of the progress he’s made.   Before, his Ki Ko Ho didn’t eve faze Nappa, but now it’s got Cell flummoxed.   It doesn’t seem to be hurting Cell much, but it is impeding his progress.   Think about how badly Cell wants to absorb 18 and how long it’s taking him to move towards her.    That’s all Tien.
Tumblr media
At the Lookout, Goku can sense what Tien is doing, and he begs for him to stop.
Tumblr media
But what else can he do?   Piccolo’s down, 16 is down, and Vegeta and Trunks still haven’t come out of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.   Tien has to do this, and he’s determined to keep doing it until his body gives out.
Tumblr media
And for my money, this is what DBZ is all about.    Tien’s staring into the face of Doomsday and saying “over my dead body”.   He’s not going to win this, and he’s probably not going to survive, or even buy that much time, but he’s going to do whatever he can.
Tumblr media
At Kame House, Chiaotzu is just suddenly here for some reason.    He’s worried about Tien, of course, and Yamcha decides that they should head over to help him, but Roshi convinces them that there’s nothing they can do.    It’s painful, but they have to accept they would only add to the list of Cell’s victims.   Kind of weird how all four of the characters in this screenshot have been in the World Martial Arts Tournament, and now they’re basically reduced to civilians.
Tumblr media
At last, Tien’s body succumbs ot fatigue and he collapses onto the ground.    Cell floats out of his hole and considers how someone like Tien could have given him this much trouble.    By now 18 and 16 have flown too far for him to find easily.
Tumblr media
On the lookout, Goku... wait, where’d he go?
Tumblr media
Cell kicks Tien around a bit, then decides to finish him off, even though he looks like he’s about to die already.   But then--!
Tumblr media
Goku appears, placing himself between Cell and Tien.  He admits that he can’t beat him as he is now, but he promises Cell that he’ll be ready for him in just one short day.   Then Goku notices someone else...
Tumblr media
Turns out Piccolo’s still alive.    For that matter, he must be doing better than he looked before, because somehow he managed to drag himself back onto the shore.    Goku teleports over to pick him up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cell isn’t keen on just letting these three go, but Goku’s teleportation keeps surprising him.   When Goku finally leaves, he has no idea where he went.   At last, he decides to forget them and resume his search for 18.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Krillin’s on his way to fetch the remote control from Bulma.    Look how happy he is to see her in this shot.
Tumblr media
Bulma informs him that the remote only has a ten meter range, so Krillin will have to get pretty close in order to use it.    She also has fresh clothes for the Z-Fighters, but Krillin tells her that the Saiyans will be fighting next, and they’re all on the Lookout, so Bulma heads there next.
Tumblr media
On the Lookout, Piccolo and Tien have gotten senzu beans and are fully recovered, but Piccolo paints a grim picture of the situation.   Cell’s just too powerful, and he doesn’t think anyone can beat the guy.
Tumblr media
Then, Popo tells them that Vegeta and Trunks are finally coming out of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.   How does he know that, exactly?   Did they knock first?   Is there some sort of signal you use when you’re ready to leave?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, here they are!   I’m kind of amazed that their clothes are this much in tact after being stuck in there for a year with nothing else to wear.

Anime Update 47
Dragon Ball - Well, Goku has finally changed his clothes and the 22nd Budokai is finally getting underway. And...I’m honestly not that enthused for this saga. It’s always been pretty low on the totem pole for Dragon Ball sagas to me, since a Budokai arc with these same competitors (Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, and “Jackie Chun”) was already done with the 21st Budokai and this one doesn’t have the interesting angle that the 23rd Budokai would, making it seem weaker than both of them. The only new source of conflict is Master Roshi’s rival Shen, AKA Hermit Crane, and his pupils. Tienshinhan - or Tien as he’s often called in the dub and I will call him since it’s less of a mouthful to type out - is easily the strongest element of the saga. In DBZ he was always that one character I thought was cool and should’ve been interesting but was given next to nothing to work with, but in his earliest outings he is interesting and a very solid antagonist whose intimidation factor and willingness to fight in the most ruthless fashion that tournament rules could allow makes him a natural progression from the threat of Tao Pai Pai. Chiaotzu, on the other hand...I never really liked him in DBZ and seeing him here kind of reinforces why. Tien’s the only one he can show any semblance of humanity towards, but otherwise he’s this creepy looking, detached, vacant shell of a character. And Master Shen himself as an antagonist is bland at best, insufferable at worst, with Chuck Huber’s voice acting for him in the dub paling in comparison to his Pilaf. And I’m feeling no sense of excitement or stakes here. The last episode I watched ended on a cliffhanger that was so banal and forced that it was kind of insulting. Uh oh - this King Choppa guy is pretty strong! Can Goku possibly beat him in his fucking preliminary match? Stay tuned!
Love Live Sunshine! - The first episode of the two I watched, the one set at New Years’, was decent but it suffered from the problem I knew from the preview was coming - too much spotlight on the Third Year trio and not enough on the rest. Which has been a frequent flaw in this season especially in its back half now that the end of the series fast approaches. Despite Chika still being the lead character and still receiving development, I think the Second Years have ironically been the most overshadowed compared to what the First Years and Third Years have gotten up to. We’ve got enough dramatic stakes already, so was the “the three of us will go our separate ways after graduation” thing really needed here? And what the fuck was with that magical bus ride at the end? Did Aqours just get totally high at that point and we all missed it? But the second episode, simply titled “Uranohoshi High School For Girls”, was likely the best episode in the whole season and one of the best in all Love Live!. It gave equal focus to all the girls of Aqours even if the most prominence was given to Mari by the end. The backdrop of the school’s final festival was used for so many significant moments, even when a lot of them seemed like throwaway antics. You finally gets some good material! And the ending was beautiful - first the part with balloons spelling out the school’s name lifted into the sky and then the final scene at the bonfire, with the finishing touch coming after the ED Credits following a sudden wave bursting over Aqours’ name on the sand (SYMBOLISM!). It serves a purpose similar to the first series’ 24th episode - both focusing on how something will have to end forever after Love Live is done - but ends on a totally different feeling. That episode had µ's going through the five stages of grief and ended on a painfully bittersweet note following a huge tearjerker moment. This one carries a happy feeling throughout the episode and despite a tearful moment near the end, ends on a note of hope, joy, positivity and togetherness. The perfect beginning of the end.
My-Otome - Just before Arika can lose her grip on the collapsing tower and all of her clothes in the process (what the shit was that?), it’s Haruka to the rescue, as badass, egocentric and hyper emotional as always! And even in this reality, her relationships with Yukino and Shizuru have not changed a bit! Nagi and Sergey continue to be suspicious, as do these Black Valley worshipers and this one vaguely skeevy Otome, Mashiro continues to be a precious little jerk, and we finally get clarification on what exactly an Otome is and what being one entails. Basically, an Otome is a Super Maid sworn to the service of a master, and opposite of HiMEs whose lives and power were derived from their most cherished loved ones, to be an Otome is to encourage the abandonment of personal attachments and loving feelings for others, and an Otome would in fact lose all their power if they got intimately involved with another person. That’s actually fairly interesting, as it whatever relationship Nina and Nao seem to have.
Assassination Classroom - Wow. This might’ve been the strongest episode of this series to date. As super special awesome as Korosensei is in so many ways, as both a target and as a teacher, we’ve been repeatedly shown his weaknesses and times where he’s not as smart, strong, or self assured as he’d like to always be. But never did we see him getting so thoroughly outplayed and having the absolute shit beaten out of him like in his fight with Itona Horibe, his deranged “little brother”. It was especially effective for the mood whiplash - Itona is straight up a parody of arrogant, strength-obsessed edgelord rival characters in anime and manga when we first meet him and it’s hilarious, but then when his hair is revealed to be tentacles all along (oh my God, we actually paid THAT off!), he becomes a very real and serious threat to our main character. It’s clear that Itona’s seemingly friendly but truly sinister and abusive cloaked guardian, Shiro, is responsible for this and for Korosensei’s own current form (since it’s very obvious now that he’s a mutated human), but he left without giving any answers, so he’s going to be a constant lurking danger in this series from hereon out. I liked how unlike Ritsu, Itona did not get converted by Korosensei and has not joined the class, and how him nearly killing Korosensei really got all the students to realize how much they really need to shape up as assassins because they couldn’t bear the thought of their teacher dying by anyone else’s hands. I love it. This series is like the kind we’ve seen in Western Animation in recent years where its off-the-walls silly premise and light-hearted comedic tone are a veil for an ever-growing narrative with some surprisingly deeper, darker, more serious and more heartfelt material than you’d initially be ready for.
Nadja of Tomorrow - When one door closes, a new door of destiny opens up, and with that we close our door on another series that I’d been watching since these posts began. I recall always being iffy on this finale because after all the Hell that Nadja went through to meet her mother and be with her at last, it ends with her leaving her behind to go travel the world with her found family in the Dandelion Troupe some more. But now after having the whole series worth of context that led to this? This was a really, really strong end to the story, to the point of seeming almost perfect as a series finale. The way in which Nadja gets to Colette was totally characteristic for her and the ultimate testament to her unyielding determination and how strong and confident a person she’s grown into. The mother and daughter reunion itself was heartfelt and rewarding, but what got to me even more was the last talk between Nadja and the Halcourt twins. She brings to both brothers closure regarding their mother’s feelings prior to her passing and while she realizes she’s not yet at a point where she can conclusively choose which of them she loves more, the way the two of them have gotten so much closer together and the love they show for each other and for her makes that a total non-factor. Of course there still needed to be some conflict and Duke Preminger showed just why he is my most loathed character in this entire story with the shit he tried to pull here. And from start to finish, that final scene at the mansion party was perfectly done - from Nadja coming down dressed in her regular attire to the Duke springing his trap to take Nadja as his heir to all of Nadja’s nobleman friends she’s made fighting back for her sake (including Keith from a distance in full Tuxedo Mask glory) to Nadja finally calling her grandfather out for his many misdeeds and errors in thinking in front of everyone gathered there in that mansion, and delivering the ultimate blow to his face by telling him that not only will she decide her own destiny, but she’d rather be a travelling street performer again than live in privilege as the heiress to a noble dukedom. The gobsmacked look on his face when she said this was.pure cathartic bliss for me. With the theme song instrumental playing as literally the entire gathering takes Nadja’s side and sees her out the door, Nadja rejoining her Troupe family but vowing to get back in touch with her mother soon, the total defeat of the Duke, and the book literally being closed by who is likely an older Nadja, it feels exactly like where the story had been headed towards this whole time and where it was meant to end, which it does with one final “Que Sera Sera” ED Credits and a special message to signify this show’s long journey is indeed over.
Toei Animation had apparently planned to possibly make this only the first in a franchise of anthology shows set in this same world in different time periods, but it didn’t do well enough in the ratings, so they turned to making Pretty Cure into their next Cash Cow instead. Nadja at most has a cult following...but it honestly deserves more than that. This show was an exceptionally well done story told across 50 episodes and it holds up just as well now as it did back in its day. So thank you Nadja Preminger, for giving me such a fun ride into one tomorrow after another. A new tomorrow now lies somewhere else...
Mobile Fighter G Gundam - The “shit hits the fan” feeling is so palpable at this point in the show. We and Rain finally see her father, Dr. Mikamura, for the petty, hateful old bastard driven by envy and feelings of inadequacy next to Dr. Kasshu that he always was, we learn that the Neo Japan military were the true villains behind what happened to Domon’s family, why Kyoji had to flee to Earth inside the Ultimate Gundam, and how the Ultimate Gundam became the Dark Gundam (honestly not too surprising a reveal given how off that backstory was and how terrible the governing forces of Neo Japan are), we learn that Swhartz is some sort of Android replica of Kyoji with Kyoji’s memories and personality because the original Kyoji got corrupted while trying to keep the Dark Gundam out of Neo Japan and Neo Hong Kong’s clutches, and we watch Domon getting so pummeled in his fight with DG Zombie Michelo that he needs Argo and Sai Saici to come to his aid and then the two of them seemingly perish in order to end Michelo for good, all as the surviving support crew watch the island from a distance, concerned that their loved ones aren’t making it out alive. And then just as Domon vows to avenge his fallen comrades by fighting and defeating Undefeated of the East, Zombie Chapman gets sicced on him! It just doesn’t let up!
WataMote - This latest insane, fun-filled, honestly pretty dreary outing with Tomoko Kuroki once again lacked much in the way of solid plot. For half the episode it’s Tomoko griping about school, walking in the rain, losing her umbrella, and giving me so much secondhand embarrassment as she trips over every attempt to talk to some guys, but then it becomes about her attempting to catch her big brother’s cold (which she gave him in the first place) so that she wouldn’t have to attend school by staying with him in his room in all things she does. That goes about as well for her as you’d think - by the time she finally gets it, she’s already had Friday at school and has to stay at home sick over the weekend when there’s no school to skip out on anyway. Yeah, have fun social distancing now, Tomoko!
March Comes In Like A Lion - Started on this anime but as I’ve only done the first two episodes, I don’t have much to say on it other than the production value, atmosphere, settings and characters are all top notch so far, what Rei’s whole situation is and how he seems to be grappling with serious depression is interesting already, the opening and ending (and much of the first episode) is really unusual for anime, and I’d give the Kawamoto sisters everything I could if I was acquainted with them. But...seriously, what is with that title?
Angel Beats! - Set at some point after last week’s episode, it’s the noncanon special episode, “Stairway to Heaven!” Operation START!
- So you know how Episode 2 ended on a note that made Yurippe out to be a heroic figure only for Episode 3 (and the lost episode) to cast that into doubt, and for Episode 4 to then further make her look like a villain, penalty death game threats, evil laughter, and Yusa’s acknowledgment of how villainous she sounds and all? Well now they’re not even trying to disguise it. This one does everything Episode 4 did taken up to the extreme because High Tension and stuff. By this point Yurippe has transcended being just the ringleader of “a bunch of bullies with weapons” and is in full diabolical cartoon villainous mastermind mode in the opening briefing scene, scheming to use Angel’s “goody goody” nature against her and confuse her to the point where she’ll make contact with GOD HIMSELF, so Battlefront could then finally get their answers and their revenge on Him! And just to be extra dickish, she insists that her underlings maintain their High Tension in everything they do 24/7 but that she will be excluded from this, and that if this mission fails, they’ll all (except her) have to fast for an entire week, basically killing themselves from thirst and starvation. “Like a demon” indeed. It makes the episode all the more perfect for watching in between episodes 4 and 5 given the escalation of Yurippe’s villainy.
- A great joke with Otonashi gets lost upon the English dub. After Yurippe has detailed the operation, the dub has Otonashi thinking to himself “I wonder if I have to take part in this?” Which...makes absolutely no sense because he’s a member of Battlefront so of fucking course he’d have to take part in it. Originally he’s internally asking himself “Do even I have to take part in this?”, which is a joke on how utterly low tension Otonashi regularly is. That’s right, Seiji Kishi and Jun Maeda were flat out making fun of the fact that Otonashi is a bland Vanilla Protagonist who lacks the energy and zaniness of his friends, which makes the eventual payoff to Otonashi in this episode where he calls on the sports’ festival by screaming at the top of his lungs with High Tension that much funnier.
- Yui and Hinata’s first interaction shows how surprisingly close they’ve started to grow with each other following the baseball game, despite Yui screwing up Hinata’s big shot at victory and him claiming he’d never forgive her for that. It makes no sense yet makes too much sense at the same time.
- Incidentally, there is virtually no difference between Noda and Yui acting with High Tension than how they act all the time. And when Matsushida the Fifth gets high with tension and shouts, I can definitely hear him sounding a little like Pedro from Excel Saga since Rob Mungle voiced both characters.
- Angel enters the episode by asking “What are you crazy boys up to?” in her usual deadpan tone and expressing mild confusion about why they’re going in a direction away from school when class is about to start. There is approximately zero menace to this girl at this point, she’s just a precious, awkward little dork who plays by the rules and wishes her peers could do the same.
- Seiji Kishi was really lampooning himself with all this High Tension screaming with wild body motions, contorted faces, and hamfisted reactions to everything, which tends to be his signature comedy style. In addition, Jun Maeda might’ve been lampooning his own style since he tends to go for a lot of repeated jokes, so here we have Battlefront literally repeating their same routine in class in two consecutive scenes, which actually works in the context of them needing to keep up their High Tension in all their school life activities.
- Angel again kills the Battlefront boys mood by asking them to clean up after class. Naturally, they take this with hammy, excited fervor and take the cleaning way beyond just the classrooms and out into the halls. Not only is this hysterical on its own, but Naoi shouting “What is WRONG with you people?” is icing on the cake.
- GlDeMo gets another great scene where Yui gets to interact well with Sekine, Irie, and Hisako, the latter even whacking her on the head with her guitar. Ouch!
- Yurippe has two great moments while the sports festival is going on. One where she’s prompted into acting like a sports’ announcement broadcaster by Yusa (followed by throwing down the mic she has and going “Why did you make me DO that?”), and then one that can only be described as her crowning moment of sheer delicious evilness, with the gag from her evil laugh in Episode 4 even getting repeated with Yusa this time asking “Are you a villain?” Which....technically, yes. Yes, she is.
- Naoi gets a second cameo pleading with Angel not to leave their important student council funds meeting. Another nice little moment of Naoi acting as the Vice President prior to his promotion next week.
- Sheena gets the highest tension score on the Tension Meter in the entire episode with her reaction to a cute stuffed puppy dog she’d sewed herself and was showing to Angel. Yurippe gives the natural Angel Beats! response to this: “She’s a moron.”
-  When Angel does her “How shall I report this?” fakeout, it is interesting that Yurippe immediately assumes she’s reporting to God not just due to their High Tension antics and refusal to move on despite immersing themselves in school life activities that they’re clearly enjoying, but due to the chaos brought about by the sports’ festival. Battlefront’s number one standard is the refusal to harm normal students, yet many normal students were injured in sports and by Sheena alone, so technically they’ve broken their one rule. Yurippe thus goes into the episode’s resolution feeling she’s got nothing left to lose.
- Yurippe and the others’ reactions to finding out Angel is just tending to a secret gardening club and the “cute” turnips she grows there rather than meeting with God are absolutely priceless, especially with Brittney Karbowski’s frantic, super pissy delivery in the dub and how the other half of Battlefront that hadn’t followed Yurippe’s lead at first just walk in with no problem, leading to the reveal that Angel had entered no secret password for entering that door and had just been using a calculator. But it takes a pretty dark turn when Yurippe’s rage causes a thread of sanity in her to snap and she declares her followers will pay the penalty of going a week without eating or drinking anything despite them following her orders and doing everything right as best as they could. That is just despicable and unfair...but in a darkly hilarious way.
- Speaking of, the ending is the show’s pinnacle of black comedy. Yui and the rest of GlDemo, looking all skeletal and wasting away from thirst and hunger, finally collapse dead and as a collapsed Yusa reports this back to Yurippe, we see everyone else in Battlefront lying dead...all except Yurippe herself, who chugs a bottle of water and is sitting at her desk, grinning and remarking “It’s not like they’ll die!” Yusa states “the role of the villain suits you perfectly, Yurippe...” and then she dies. Despite “Brave Song” playing, rather than the typical credits, we get one where all of Battlefront is there at the very start (similar to the the final credits in the series finale) but then in the blink of an eye, all of them vanish from behind Yurippe, leaving her standing alone as the camera pans in and her song plays on. Rather than “To Be Continued”, the words at the end are “Bad End.” There are two different interpretations for this: one is that Yurippe was wrong and everyone actually passed on and never came back, having lost the will to keep on living after this punishment, leaving her all alone without her followers. The other is that even if they did come back, none of them would readily follow Yurippe anymore or see her as their friend because clearly she isn’t their’s if she’d put them through something that horrible without any remorse, which means Yurippe crossed a moral line that puts her beyond the redemption she’d find later in the show since that redemption hinges on her coming to love and value her followers as friends, and them doing the same for her. Regardless of whether or not she could ultimately find a different redemption and pass on in peace later on, she ended up becoming the Satanic figure she avoided becoming in the story proper, and that’s what makes this the Bad End for that story.
For the most part, this episode doesn’t do anything other than be off-the-walls silliness from start to surprisingly disturbing finish, but it does its job correctly and its welcome to have more Angel Beats! content in this setting with these characters in any capacity beyond the 13 episode original story, so I love it. Next week things will get somehow even funnier and crazier...and then also pretty depressing.

10 Underrated Dragon Ball Fights That Changed The Series Forever
Let's not kid ourselves here: One of the main reasons we watch Dragon Ball is for the rad battles. Yes, we love Goku and the ultimately positive message he sends about training and working your hardest and fighting for what you believe in. But we also love when Goku slams his fist so hard into a bad guy's face that it turns the dude's brain into chili. And the biggest of these fights have become anime legend: Goku vs Vegeta, Goku vs Frieza, Goku vs Any Manga That Happened To Try To Compete With Dragon Ball In Weekly Shonen Jump, etc.
However, we shouldn't ignore some of the less famous fights. Because there's a lot of clashes in the various Dragon Ball series that don't get as much attention as they deserve, but manage to evolve the series in a lot of great ways. And I'm gonna cover ten of those here.
  1. Goku vs Yamcha
The first few episodes of Dragon Ball are basically a squash match. No antagonist, no matter their size or their personality, are really equipped to handle Goku, and Goku just mops the floor with them. This dude who can't legally ride rollercoasters yet is the most dangerous person in the world, apparently. And it's only when Goku meets Yamcha for the first time that he also kind of meets his match.
Nowadays, of course, it's common knowledge that Yamcha didn't exactly keep up with Goku's progress. But their first fight is surprisingly even and helped to move Goku past just being the equivalent of a pint-sized slasher villain.
  2. Goku vs Tao
Tao wasn't the first real villain that Goku encountered, but he's definitely the first really bloodthirsty one. He kills multiple times without mercy in the build-up to his fight with Goku and then easily bests Goku, too. It's such a change of pace that it almost feels like an entirely new story. Sorry, Goku. You're no longer the main character of Dragon Ball. It's now Tao, and the story will mostly be about him just murdering the whole world.
Not an exhibition fight between respectful opponents and not played for comedy in any way, Goku's first trial against Tao increases the stakes of the show. It also foreshadows other, more famous ruthless villains like Frieza and Cell. And lastly, the rematch (which Goku wins) gives Tao a chance to be reincarnated as a Cyborg, which in my opinion, has always been the storytelling equivalent of a hole-in-one.
  3. Master Roshi vs Tien
Under the guise of "Jackie Chun," Master Roshi wins the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament. However, Goku puts up such a good fight in the finals that he's like "Okay, kid. Ya got real promise." However, when he enters the 22nd Tournament, he does the exact opposite, stepping down right in the middle of his fight with Tien.
Early on in the series, starting with his first "Kamehameha" and the first time that he revealed that he could be absolutely jacked under his clothes, Roshi is seen as almost a mythic figure. However, by forfeiting his fight with Tien, Roshi allows the next generation of combatants to flourish. He no longer needs to test himself against the future, because with fighters like Goku and Tien, the martial arts world is in good hands (and fists).
  4. Goku vs Krillin
Everyone knows that poor, sweet Krillin probably won't win the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. He's facing Goku, and fighting Goku in the original Dragon Ball, no matter who you are, is like bringing a wet spaghetti noodle to a knife fight. But there's definitely a sense of camaraderie and respect among Krillin and Goku, and they promise not to take it easy on each other just because they're friends.
This would inform all relationships in Dragon Ball to come. These people are friends and training partners, and being able to spar with each other and trust that they're each giving their best is the only way to gain strength. It's a prototype for what will come later with Vegeta, even if Vegeta is a little less, umm, cordial than Krillin.
   5. Goku vs Drum
So everyone remembers when Goku used a Reverse Kamehameha and punched right through King Piccolo, starting a grand tradition of Dragon Ball warriors finding themselves missing about half their torso. Earlier, though, in an even more shocking display of violence, Goku kicks one of King Piccolo's henchmen in the head so hard that the skull puts in its two week's notice.
That poor henchman's name is Drum, and his demise is a great look at the brutality that will eventually become a staple of a ton of Dragon Ball fights. So thank you, Drum, for your service. And sorry about your face.
  6. Goku vs Raditz
Goku and Raditz's battle is pretty well known, but it's still often in the shadow of the upcoming fight between Goku and Vegeta. However, there's a very obvious difference between those two fights: In his clash with Piccolo against Raditz, Goku eats it. The dude dies. And this is in the fifth episode of Dragon Ball Z. That's like if the second episode of The Sopranos ended with Richie Aprile just shooting Tony in the head.
But Goku's death (and time spent training in the Underworld), allows for the other characters to shine. In fact, if you didn't watch Dragon Ball and started with Z, you're just now getting to know the cast at this point in the show. That's important, especially when it comes to making sure that Dragon Ball Z doesn't just turn into Goku And His Less Amazing Friends.
  7. Nappa vs Krillin, Gohan, Piccolo and Goku
Nappa doesn't look very promising. He's big, muscly and bald, like Bane without the dope coats. However, he tears apart various Z-Fighters in his battle with them, and probably would've just eaten Gohan if Goku hadn't come back and obliterated him. Then, begging for help, he gets destroyed by Vegeta. Like, come on, Vegeta. He wasn't that weak. He could've been a pretty good barista or something.
This fight, where a relatively large cast fights a bad guy all at the same time, or one after another, shines a light on one of the most exciting parts of Dragon Ball. Yeah, it usually all comes down to Goku staring down some Warlord in a one-on-one deathmatch, but these fights are dynamic and surprising, and were a welcome treat whenever they occurred.
  8. Goku vs Future Trunks
There's a time when every hero kind has to step up and be the unflappable leader of their group. And when Future Trunks swings a sword at Goku and Goku doesn't even flinch, it shows Goku's evolution. After his fight with Frieza, he's not really the underdog anymore. I mean, his fight ended with Frieza in multiple pieces. Hard to give Goku the Rudy treatment after that.
So here, Goku proves just why everything seems to revolve around him. He's GOKU and he's gonna DEFLECT YOUR BLADE WITH HIS FINGER and that is  ACTUALLY PRETTY DANGEROUS SO DON'T TRY IT AT HOME but it's okay here because IT'S GOKU.
  9. Goku vs Beerus
Dragon Ball Super saw clashes between gods, and its first arc ended with the long, desperate fight between Goku and Beerus. And despite this series being Goku's grand return, Goku...loses.
But considering how powerful Goku had gotten at the end of Dragon Ball Z, is there really another way to kick things off? Goku might not be the underdog anymore, but if his power gets too overwhelming and he just wins everything, all of the stakes in the show are squandered. Losing to Beerus means resetting the tone of the show and makes it worth watching. Goku now has a place to go and a bar to hurdle.
  10. Goku vs Vegeta
Ending a show is tough. On one hand, you could have all of the characters together, Return of the Jedi style, smiling at the camera and showing the audience that everything is gonna be okay for now. On the other, you could go for something with a little more depth.
Dragon Ball Super concludes with Vegeta and Goku briefly sparring with each other, and is there a more fitting way to end the show? Two former enemies that love to fight and have grown to respect one another dueling each other just to improve. It's just about every theme of the show rolled into one, and assures us that, no matter what, Dragon Ball is forever.
What is your favorite fight in Dragon Ball? What would you have put on this list? Let us know in the comments!

Have you gotten Yamcha for the ask game yet? Or Tien? 😊
i have received Neither Chaps !!! So I will now do them both :) Pause on that :) gonna put this under a Read More since This Will Be Long <3
Yamcha:
Give Me A Character and I Will Answer:
Why I like them:
Uhhhh A Lot Of Reasons. Like. A lot. BUT I will be brief and say I like him because as a kid I always thought he looked cool and I always thought his first fight with Goku was radical. With My Big Man Brain Now I love him for just how sincere of a guy he is? And how loving and friendly and supportive? And I make fun of him for it but the wolf aesthetic genuinely is really cool- not to mention how he loves to change up his outfits and hairstyles!
Why I don’t:
I have no reason to hate this man. Like none exists. In The Most Platonic Way Ever he’s literally the perfect man and I would take him home to meet my mom and even then she would be happy with me dating a man if it was Yamcha Dragon Ball.
Favorite episode (scene if movie):
I have so many favorite Yamcha moments and ergo episodes good god help me BUT I will name ONE off the top of my head so I’m not stuck here forever and I really love the baseball scene in Z for Many Reasons it’s just so good it plays on loop in my brain 24/7 so I Will Say episode 10 of DBZ :)
Favorite season/movie:
The Tien Saga.... legendary.... yes he did get his leg broken but everything before AND after that??? Immaculate. Perfect. Astounding. No The Tien Saga Is Not Therapy But I Will Use It As Such
Favorite line:
Anything Yamcha says is music to my ears and is pure gold, and aside from The Iconic “Looking good, Tien!” quote from Budokai 3, I gotta say my actual favorite quote??
“No big deal. Bones heal, just like everything else.” -Yamcha to Tien in reference to his broken leg after the 22nd World Tournament
Like. It’s SUCH a simple line but it’s SO telling of Yamcha’s character?? Tien literally broke his leg with no concern of the long-lasting effects of doing so, not to mention his dickish behavior beforehand towards Yamcha beforehand. So for Yamcha to just be ready to forgive him at the drop of a hat when he sees Tien’s seem sincerely apologetic? Dude no one talk to me I’m going to write an essay again.
Favorite outfit:
I Mean This In The Most Platonic Way Part II but Yamcha can make Literally Any outfit and hairstyle look good it should be illegal. However I am legally required to choose One (1) outfit and at this point we should all know how much I adore the desert bandit fit of his. It’s just such a classic and cute look to him (not to mention The Sword <3)
OTP:
Oh You Know :) but if you don’t it’s Yamcha and Tien- even as just Friends They’re So Good I’m Going To Write An Essay like god I want what they have so badly.
Brotp:
I love his relationship with Puar, like I genuinely would love a small arc dedicated to how they even became friends in the first place since their origin together is so mysterious yet intriguing? But aside from The Obvious answer I love his brotherly relationship with Goku and Krillin! Unfortunately that relationship wanes as they all get older but I’ll always cherish the moments where he radiated such Big Bro energy.
Head Canon:
I’ve got a dumb amount of headcanons it’s terrible BUT I think my favorite headcanon is that Yamcha’s leg never properly heals after the 22nd Tournament.
Unpopular opinion:
I. Have a lot. Of unpopular opinions. Just genuinely loving Yamcha’s an unpopular opinion in of itself BUT One of my unpopular opinions is that Yamcha’s a flirt, a cheater, and promiscuous. If he’s ever portrayed as a flirt towards women, I can give it the smallest pass in the world that he’s trying to cope but even then that’s such a stretch in my opinion- and I guess this is on top of being a headcanon but Frankly I don’t think Yamcha’s ever even kissed anyone- he’s playing the long game everyone he’ll get his kiss on his wedding day btw that’s like. Partially a joke; I joke around a lot that Yamcha’s Super dedicated to the whole Nothing Until Marriage idea lmao.
A wish:
For the love of God Yamcha pack up your shit and Puar and just move in with Tien your apartment’s shit.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen:
Honestly? I kind of don’t want Yamcha to get a girlfriend? But I also DO because he wants that the most in life and it’d be great to see SOMETHING nice happen to him!
My only gripe with him getting a girlfriend (and hopefully then a wife) would be that his girlfriend wouldn’t be that well defined of a character and she’d just be said in Passing Mentions.
5 words to best describe them:
Perfect, immaculate, loyal, courageous, lovely
My nickname for them:
Furry, Dumpy, and Wolfie!
Tien
Give Me A Character and I Will Answer:
Why I like them:
Again I Have A Lot Of Reasons BUT I love how like. Deceiving he is as a character. Like ask anyone and 90% of the time people will say Tien’s smart and serious and No Bullshit but no he is exactly the opposite he’s dumb as shit in any department outside of farming and fighting and he’s such a lil’ jackass when breathing next to Yamcha.
Sincerely though, I absolutely love his character development- it’s one of my favorite arcs in Dragon Ball to be honest but That’s An Essay For Another Time. I also love how funny he can be, intentionally or not, and he’s surprisingly really relatable at times? And just his dedication to fighting’s really neat too; at this point he MUST know he can never be stronger than Goku but he still tries nevertheless and that’s really indicative of his bullheaded personality.
Why I don’t:
You could not pay me to dislike him I’d sell my kidneys for Tenshinhan.
Favorite episode (scene if movie):
Any episode from the gang’s escapades on King Kai’s planet good lord save me. That’s where Tien’s existence shines the best it’s so good.
Favorite season/movie:
His own saga man like. As much as I LOVE Redeemed Tenshinhan I also love how much of a jackass he was like why was he like that LMAO
Favorite line:
Again, aside from The Iconic x2 “Looking good, Yamcha!” quote, I gotta say it’s:
“Yes... sir! <3″ -Tien preparing to strike Goku with the volleyball fist during the 22nd World Tournament.
Also “I left Chiaotzu and Yamcha behind. This seems too dangerous for them.” -Tien to Gohan during the Resurrection F saga
Favorite outfit:
Like Yamcha, Tien’s outfits always hit. Not a SINGLE one misses. BUT I gotta say I love his classic tits-out look- more so for the fact I like how he shows off his scar as a kind of way to say he’s moved on from the Crane School like Damn Son you love to see it :,) Deep reasons aside, my second-favorite outfit’s got to be the Buu Saga listen man everyone just had the Hottest outfits in the Buu Saga you can’t blame me.
OTP:
Oh You Know :)
Brotp:
Tien has Two (2) friends in his life man the pool’s small but even if it WAS larger I would say Chiaotzu anyway LMAO. Love them dudes man.
Head Canon:
Tien is just. Terribly academically and socially stupid. The Social Ineptitude isn’t even a headcanon that’s just fact but when I said he’s stupid in every department But Fighting And Farming I meant it. Flirting with Tien is a nightmare. If you’re not Yamcha or Chiaotzu joking with him is a headache. He’s only smart in the vocabulary department other than that he couldn’t tell you how many planets are in the solar system. He’s dumb as rocks but is smart enough to convince everyone around him he’s smart because he knows what picayune means.
Unpopular opinion:
I have nothing but love and respect for Krillin, but it makes like. No sense to insist Krillin’s the strongest human on earth. Tien does not go hard on that grind 24/7 just for everyone- writers included- to reduce him to such trash when fighting. But why pit two kings against each other you know?
A wish:
Please just give him one good sexy fight that’s all I’m asking for. Also Tien PLEASE use the solar flare you dumb motherfucker YOU INVENTED IT??? Actually all of my wishes are fighting related but yeah Tien for God’s Sake acknowledge how crazy your move kit is and fuck it UP MY GUY.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen:
Tien please don’t get a random wife I fortunately cannot see that happening but for the love of God Toei if you make that happen I will actually commit arson. Any other fear I could have either has come true or cannot happen.
5 words to best describe them:
Deceivingly smart dumbass I love
My nickname for them:
Headass, Slap Head, My Man/s, Bald Motherfucker, Polyphemus Headass (I know Polyphemus is a cyclops but shush), Four Arms, Machamp, Stitch, Roach, King, and Ikea Dresser

Dragon Ball Z 027
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really dig these establishing shots of Yamcha and Tien’s bodies to open the episode.   A grim reminder that no matter when Goku arrives, he’s already too late.
Tumblr media
The Saiyans have written off Goku as a no-show, so Nappa’s getting set to wipe out the last three Z-Fighters.   Before he does, though, Piccolo has a last ditch plan to stop him.
Tumblr media
First, Krillin goes after Nappa, but it’s all a big diversion...
Tumblr media
...so that he won’t notice Piccolo sneaking up from behind to grab Nappa’s tail.  This worked wonders on Raditz last year, or it would have if Goku hadn’t let him go like a jerk.  Piccolo’s not nearly as gullible, though, so as long as he’s got a tight grip, Nappa will lose all his strength, setting him up for Gohan to...
Tumblr media
Oh.   Huh.
Tumblr media
Vegeta laughs at their plan.   Yeah, the tail is the Saiyans’ weak spot, but if anyone knows that, it’s the Saiyans themselves, which is why they train their tails to overcome that problem.
What I don’t understand is why Krillin never pointed this out, since he ran into the exact same trouble when he fought Goku way back at the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai.    He knew about the tail weakness, went for it, and then Goku revealed that it no longer worked, because he’d strengthened his tail.   So really, the anomaly here is Raditz, who seems to be the only Saiyan who never got around to whipping his tail into shape.
That sort of makes me wonder why Goku went for Raditz’s tail, since he of all people would know what a gamble that would be.   But maybe Goku wasn’t just guessing.    Maybe he sized up Raditz, and decided that, superior as he was that day, he was the sort of guy who would ignore a fatal weakness.
Tumblr media
With Piccolo down, Nappa decides to amuse himself by picking on Gohan.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, as if sensing her son’s peril, Chi-Chi has found all of Launch’s guns and ammo, and she plans to go to the battlefield and rescue Gohan herself.
Tumblr media
Well, you don’t have to worry about your son, Chi-Chi, because Krillin’s here.    Nappa was so busy attacking that he forgot about him, and Krillin blindsides him with a kick to the face.    Take that, you big bald creep.
Tumblr media
Then Krillin sets up a move he had been saving.    No, seriously, what was he saving this for?   In case things got desperate?   We passed that stage five episodes ago.
Tumblr media
Nappa stubbornly stands his ground, thinking he can just block this attack like everything else the Earth has thrown at him so far, but Vegeta warns him to dodge before it’s too late.
Tumblr media
Turns out, Krillin’s technique was no ordinary ki blast, but one designed to be so thin and sharp that it can slice through just about anything.    If Nappa had tried to take it head-on, he would have gotten killed.
Incidentally, I’m really learning to admire the choice of scenery for this battle.    All of these buttes are just small enough not to get int the way, but they’re big enough and plentiful enough that we can see a bunch of them get destroyed whenever a big attack misses.
Tumblr media
Vegeta grumbles over Nappa’s carelessness.   He should have recognized the danger himself, but he’s completely lost his focus.
Tumblr media
I suppose this is the main feature of Nappa’s character, at least where this battle is concerned.    He started out thinking this was all fun and games, but then Vegeta told him to hold off for three hours, and now he’s getting frustrated because he’s not winning as easily as he’d like.   All three of those moods have made him sloppy.    If he could just start over and approach this battle more professionally, he could win easily, but he’s gotten too emotional.
It’s sort of like Vegeta said about the scouters.   The Earth fighters can raise their power levels at will, so the scouter readings are misleading at best.  But even without the scouter, Nappa still let himself underestimate his opponents, and he took their fear and desperation for helplessness.    Now, he’s getting a taste of what they can do when they’re pushed far enough.   I like to think that if Tien, Chiaotzu and Yamcha had survived this late into the battle, the six of them might have managed to turn the tide.
Tumblr media
Nappa goes to beat up Krillin, but then he gets blasted from behind by...
Tumblr media
...Piccolo, who managed to recover from the blow to the head from before.
Tumblr media
Vegeta’s loving this.   Nappa went in thinking these guys were pushovers, and now they’re finally using the numbers game to close the gap a little.
Tumblr media
Then the good guys sense Goku approaching, and Vegeta puts on his scouter to check, and he picks up a bogie with a power level of 5000.    This is high enough to make him worry a little.   Goku or not, there’s a good chance that this guy can increase his power level just like all the other Earthlings, so if he’s starting out at 5000, then there’s no telling how much higher he could go.
Just to be on the safe side, he orders Nappa to kill the others immediately, so they won’t have a chance to team up with the newcomer.    This seems surprisingly rational for Vegeta, but I guess he’s finally starting to recognize that there’s more to the Earth’s defenders than meets the eye.
Tumblr media
Nappa is confused, because earlier Vegeta wanted Piccolo kept alive so they could interrogate him about the Dragon Balls.    But Vegeta’s had time to consider that, and he’s realized that if the Dragon Balls were made by a Namekian, then it stands to reason that there must be other Dragon Balls on the Namekian homeworld.
Tumblr media
Gohan pleads with Piccolo to get away while he still can.    He promises to hold the line until Goku can arrive.
Tumblr media
Nappa takes offense at this.   I can’t say as I blame him.    Gohan’s barely fought so far, and no he’s talking like he can handle Nappa by himself.
Tumblr media
So he turns away from Piccolo to go after Gohan, and then Gohan squares up and kicks him in the face.   This is pretty awesome.   As cool as Krillin’s kick was, Gohan didn’t even sneak up on him.    He just jumped right up and nailed him before he knew what was happening.
Tumblr media
And that’s the last straw.   Nappa becomes completely enraged, so he launches a big energy blast at Gohan to finish him off once and for all.
Tumblr media
Piccolo see this happening, and he starts having a flashback.
Tumblr media
Apparently one time he reached over and patted Gohan’s li’l head while he was asleep.   Awwwwww...
Tumblr media
So then he rushes over and puts himself in the path of Nappa’s attack!
Tumblr media
And then...

Dragon Ball 101 :(
Tumblr media
This is it!  The finale of the Tien Shinhan Saga and the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai!  We got a lot to cover, so let’s get moving.
Tumblr media
Tien’s final gambit to win the tournament was to destroy the entire ring.   Since he can fly and Goku can’t, Goku will have no choice but to land out of bounds, thus giving Tien the victory.   Unless Goku was destroyed along with the ring, of course.  No one can find the li’l guy.
Which is why I love Chiaotzu’s ominous “He’s alive...”, accompanied by the bead of sweat on his face.   Sometimes, Goku is like this movie monster in the form of a little kid.  You can run, you can hide, you can beat the crap out of him, you can kill him, but then he keeps coming back for more.
Tumblr media
Tien’s mistake was in thinking that Goku would only jump high enough to avoid the destruction of the ring.   It didn’t occur to him that he would jump even higher than Tien was floating.   So he flies up to meet him.
Tumblr media
You gotta hand it to the tournament announcer.  He came prepared.   There were a few midair battles in the last tournament, but I don’t think any of them required binoculars.   Even so, he brought a pair with him just in case.
Tumblr media
Tien is ecstatic to find Goku survived the destruction of the ring.   This might be the happiest he’s been, probably because he’s starting to think ahead to the day he can Goku can fight again.
Tumblr media
As for this fight, the only thing Goku can do is fall, and as soon as he hits the ground it’s all over.   And yet, Goku insists that he has one more attack to secure a victory.
Tumblr media
Goku starts charging up a Kamehameha, putting everything he has into it.   Tien doesn’t see what good that will do, since it won’t save Goku from getting eliminated from the match.    Master Roshi takes that reasoning one step further.   When Krillin suggests that maybe Goku can make a really BIG Kamehameha, Roshi says that it won’t matter, because Kamehameha waves simply don’t work on Tien, regardless of size or potency.
I’m not sure I understand that.    The only time Tien took a Kamehameha was when Yamcha tried it on him in the first round, and he deflected it, sure, but that’s no different from anyone else blocking any other energy attack.   If Yamcha had been stronger, or if Tien had been tired, things might have gone differently.    At least, that’s what I always assumed.
Roshi seems to be suggesting that you could shoot a Kamehameha at Tien while he’s asleep and it still wouldn’t hurt him.   If this is true, then Goku seems to have intuited this as well, since he never actually tried it.   The only Kamehameha he’s deployed in this match was to save himself from a ringout a couple of episodes back.
The reason I bring all of this up is because there’s a power-up item in the Xenoverse games called “Haaaaaaaaah!” that just makes your character immune to any Kamehameha moves from any opponents.   It’s especially handy in this one bullshit stage where you have to fight Goku, Gohan, and Goten, and all they do is spam Kamehamehas over and over.   But it’s a Tien thing, and I never understood why it was a Tien thing until now.    I think whoever came up with the item must have been referencing Roshi’s dialogue here.
Tumblr media
In any event, Goku doesn’t use the Kamehameha to attack Tien directly.   Instead, he points it the other way, which drives him head-first into Tien’s gut, which knocks the wind out of him and sends them both falling to the ground.
Tumblr media
So now it’s just a question of which one of them will hit the ground first.  Tien was exhausted from destroying the ring, and he only had enough power left to stay aloft, so taking that headbutt has left him in the same predicament he planned for Goku.    Once again, the World Tournament Announcer came prepared, and he has a little air-cycle that allows him to follow the boys and track their descent.
For a moment, Goku’s actually at a slight disadvantage, but he fires one last Kamehameha, and it’s incredibly weak because he used up all his power on the last one, but it’s just enough to give him a bit of altitude
Tumblr media
But that all gets shot to hell about six feet before they hit the ground.   The boys fall over a road, and a truck just happens to crash into Goku, which changes his trajectory enough to knock him to the ground a split second before Tien.
Tumblr media
So there it is.   Your winner and World Champion of Martial Arts, Number One Under the Heavens, Tien Shinhan.   Give him a minute, folks, he’s still kinda groggy.
Tumblr media
Everyone at the arena goes nuts and rushes out into the street to find the fighters.
Tumblr media
Huuuuuuge babyface pop for Tien when they find him.   The spectators congratulate both Tien and Goku for putting on such an awesome match, but Tien has no idea how to process this.   Then he sees Master Roshi nod to him and it starts to come together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tien would probably have gotten a very different reaction if he had cheated and killed Goku as Crane Hermit had wanted.   But by repudiating the Crane School and embracing his own fighting spirit, Tien has won over the people.   Instead of fearing him, they respect and admire him, and he’s overwhelmed by it.
Tumblr media
Two huge dudes carry Goku and Tien over to each other, and they do the whole mutual respect thing, and Krillin gets all verklempt.
Tumblr media
So does Puar, but he’ll cry over anything really.
Tumblr media
Yamcha starts doing the slow clap, and everyone joins in and applauds.   Man, how much would it suck if you did this in real life and no one joined in?  I saw a TV show where that happened and I thought it was funny, but it also filled me with dread.   I’d never dare do the slow clap in real life.   The risk of it backfiring is too great.
Tumblr media
Goku doesn’t even mind losing, even though it was so close.
Tumblr media
Goku’s clothes are all wrecked from the fighting, so Krillin gives him his own Turtle Uniform to wear, just like the last tournament.   Tien shows up and offers to split the prize money with Goku, because as far as he’s concerned, their match was a tie.   But Goku doesn’t know how to spend money, so he declines the offer.   What a guy.
Tumblr media
Then Yamcha shows up and congratulates Tien on winning the title.  Tien apologizes for breaking Yamcha’s leg, and Yamcha’s like “No worries, bro.”   Yamcha’s a class act all the way.
Roshi asks Tien and Chiaotzu where they’ll go next, and invites them to stay with him, which leads to this moment:
Tumblr media
So yeah, Launch (the blonde one anyway) is in love with Tien.   This is not a filler scene.   She says this in the manga too.  But here’s the funny thing I learned.
Tumblr media
I had fallen behind on the manga, but I went back and checked to see how things played out with Bulma and Launch, because in the comics, the tournament was done in a single day, while the anime stretched it out into four.  So in the anime, it made sense for Bulma, Launch, and Puar to eventually go back to the stadium to watch the rest of the matches.    In the manga, there wouldn’t have been time for that.   So whenever they show Goku’s friends in the audience, it’s just Oolong and Turtle, because they were the only ones who didn’t go with Yamcha to the hospital.
That means all the scenes of Launch watching Tien fight after the Yamcha match were filler scenes.   She was in the hospital the entire time, although we do have these panels from the comics showing them listening to the tournament on the radio.   Launch apparently sneezed at some point, since she was Blue during the Tien/Yamcha match, and Blonde here.
I guess what I’m driving at is that, if you go by the manga, Blonde Launch never actually witnessed Tien’s character arc.   She only got to hear play-by-play of Tien vs. Goku, and maybe Tien vs. Jackie Chun.    At first I wondered if she admired the way Tien broke Yamcha’s leg, except she was Blue Launch when she saw that fight.
So I’m not entirely sure what Lanch is referring to when she says she’s fallen in love with him.   We in the audience have seen Tien’s “wildness”, so when I first watched this episode, it didn’t surprise me at all.  But in the original story, Blonde Launch missed most of it.
You know, maybe I’m looking at this all wrong.    Maybe what really got Launch’s attention was Tien’s contrition in the aftermath of the tournament.   She sees him offer Goku half of the purse, and she sees him apologize to Yamcha, and she sees Roshi invite him into his home, and maybe it reminds her of how she got accepted into this group.    She knows of his savagery, but mostly indirectly, and what she sees in person is the other side of his savagery.   Maybe that’s what she connects to.   I’ll have to think about that some more.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Tien says that he and Chiaotzu cannot join the Turtle Hermit, although I don’t understand why not.    They’ve already betrayed the Crane Hermit, and I get why that’s a big deal, but that line has already been crossed.   I guess Tien feels that turning against the Crane Hermit was necessary, but dishonoring him further would not be, so he won’t.
Tumblr media
Tien doesn’t say no to being pen pals with Launch, though (sly goku face).
Tumblr media
So with all that out of the way, Roshi suggest they all go to dinner, and Tien offers to pay for it.   The only trouble is that Goku left his Nyoibo and Four Star Dragon Ball back at the arena.   Krillin offers to fetch them for him, since he knows Goku’s exhausted and hungry.
Tumblr media
Then there’s this super weird lull where Goku watches Krillin run off, and he calls out to him, and we pause on every character’s face while they wait for Goku to say whatever it is he’s going to say, and then he admits that he forgot, and they all sort of laugh it off.   This whole sequence is still ominous to me, after all these years.
Tumblr media
But Krillin is late getting back, and everyone’s tired of waiting for him, so they agree to start without him.   Look at Turtle’s little kiddie table, that’s great.   How’s he gonna use those tiny salt and pepper shakers?    That’s adorable.
Tumblr media
Goku gets this weird feeling, and he bolts out of the restaurant without even touching his plate.    He gets to the arena and finds Krillin and the World Tournament Announcer down on the ground.   The Announcer is dazed, but okay.   Krillin, on the other hand...
Tumblr media
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU---
Tumblr media
This image of Dead Krillin still haunts me.   I watched Z first, and I’d seen Krillin die on that show.   I even half-expected Krilln to die in this show, because in DBZ Goku said that Krillin couldn’t be wished back since he had died once before.  But I never knew when or how, or why it happened in Dragon Ball.
I’m just imagining what a crappy 4k!ds style dub would be like for this scene.
GOKU: Kevin!  What happened to you, friend?
KRILLIN: (without moving) Land’s sakes, Goku!   Ah was just mindin’ mah own beeswax, when alla sudden this monster moseys on in and grabbed yer Four Star Dragon Ball!   Ah tried to fight the low down dirty varmint, but he was tougher’n a Mississippi mule!  He even spilled some ketchup on me!
GOKU: It’s okay, Kevin.  The important thing is that you weren’t hurt.
Tumblr media
Well, this ain’t no 4!kids production.   Krillin’s dead, and someone’s got to pay...

Dragon Ball 083
Tumblr media
This screencap doesn’t have much to do with anything, I just wanted to post it because it looks really awesome.   This is such a good cartoon, guys.
Tumblr media
By the way, Goku wants to eat that bird.
Tumblr media
While that’s going on, there’s also a cool car chase happening nearby.    This green fox dude in a compact is running from three tough guys in a yellow muscle car.    They both run off the road, but somehow the three guys still think they’ve got their quarry right where they want him.   Even the bit players in Dragon Ball are extra.
Tumblr media
So we’ve got a tiger-man, a gorilla-man, and a boar-man.   They work over fox-dude for a bit, when suddenly...
Tumblr media
Looks like these guys made one mistake: They took a wrong turn and ended up in Goku Town.   Population: Whoop-ass.   Sister City: Clobberopolis.   Mayor: The Hon. Fightson McBeatemup.   I’ll stop now.
Tumblr media
Green fox dude’s name is Konkichi, and he’s so grateful that he gives Goku a ride to the airport, since he’s got to be at Papaya Island for the World Tournament the day after tomorrow.   Goku was planning to run the whole way, so using an airport never even crossed his mind, but Konkichi explains to him that Papaya Island is on the opposite side of the planet, so he’s pretty much gotta fly.    Also, Konkichi gives Goku his stash of canned food, and starts calling him “bro”.
Tumblr media
I should point out here that we’re now in the “three years later” part of this arc.   I’m not sure what the chronology is with these last five episodes, but when Goku left it was still Age 750, and now it’s Age 753, so we’re definitely looking at the 15-year-old model of Goku now.   It’s a little tricky to tell him apart from 12-year-old Goku, but his neck’s a little more prominent than in the early episodes, and his arms and legs are longer and more defined.   I’m surprised that Shu’s ninja gear still fits him, but it was kind of loose anyway, and it does sort of look like Goku’s sleeves aren’t quite long enough anymore.
Tumblr media
The Yahhoy Airport, Konkichi learns that the next flight to Papaya leaves at 3pm today, and the one after that won’t be for another week.   But Goku doesn’t have money to pay for a ticket, because he was never planning to fly in the first place.  Konkichi promises to find another way, but his scheme to pickpocket a pair of travelers misfires, so he takes Goku out of the airport to come up with another plan.
Tumblr media
And that plan is to hustle a carny.   If you can ring the bell on this strongman game, you win 30,000 zeni, enough to buy two tickets to Papaya Island (Konkichi has invited himself along too).   Goku forgoes the hammer and wins the game with his fist.   Well, that was easy.
Tumblr media
Then they run into Fortuneteller Baba, who’s apparently just cruising around Yahhoy for fun.    Treat yo self, says Baba.    Konkichi chats with Baba, but then he gets all nervous, like she can see right through him.   He excuses himself to get some juice, but...
Tumblr media
He runs into the same three guys he was running from when the episode started.   Long story short, Konkichi owed them some gambling debts, to the tune of 50,000 zeni.   They take the 30 thou he’s got on him, and tell him he can work off the balance by helping them with a little job...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the rest of the gang is preparing for their own trip to Papaya Island.   All right, let’s do a fashion check here.  Roshi’s wearing the exact same suit he wore to the last tourney, but he seems really anxious about it because he want to look cool.   Bulma asks him what the point is in an old man trying to look cool.   Hey, up yours, Bulma.   Your raincoat and socks look dumb.    I don’t like this outfit, but at least she finally ditched that pink romper looking thing.   She looked like a toddler in that.
Puar and Turtle are nude, as usual, very classy.   Oolong’s sporting a pink shirt.  Daring choice for a pig-man, but okay.  Yamcha and Krillin are in their blue World Tournament suits, so no problem there, and finally Launch...
Tumblr media
Yeah, Launch is wearing what I like to call the Best Launch Outfit Ever.   Black shirt, some sort of army surplus pants, combat boots.    It suits Blonde Launch to a tee, and Blue Launch looks really cute in it too.   Launch isn’t coming along to the tournament because the city air is bad for her skin...
Tumblr media
Wait, nvm she’s coming along after all.   Slay, Launch, slay.
Tumblr media
Back at Yahhoy, Konkichi got arrested for robbing a bank.   He tries to explain this to Goku.   Okay, so he’s really a sneak thief, sure, and he owed those three guys money, but they only made him take the fall for robbing the bank.   He never actually robbed it.   I’m not sure the law makes much of a distinction there, but okay.   Anyway, he swears to Goku that he never had a friend before, and meeting Goku made him sincerely want to change his ways.
And you know what, Goku believes him.   So he asks Baba where those three guys are now.   Baba doesn’t do psychic stuff for free, but Goku asks her to be a pal, and she agrees to take an IOU.   I wonder if Goku ever dropped by to clobber Baba’s five warriors again after this to pay the debt?
Tumblr media
It doesn’t take long for Goku to track down the crooks.  They thought they made a clean getaway, but their GPS must have been malfunctioning, because they got all turned around and ended up back in Goku Town!
Tumblr media
Incorporated Ninteen Eighty Backflip!
Tumblr media
Home of the famous white squirrels!  Also car-lifting!
Tumblr media
Your destinaton for outdoor wreck-reation!
Tumblr media
So that takes care of that.   Konkichi is truly sorry about betraying Goku’s trust, even if everything turned out okay in the end.    Then this kid he gave a lollipop to earlier at the carnival shows up and gives him a lollipop back.   He even calls Konkichi “bro.”  So it turns out Konkichi can make friends just fine!
Tumblr media
But Goku’s gotta jet.   He missed his flight, so he’ll just have to swim all the way to Papaya Island.   Now, in the dub, this whole episode focused on Konkichi calling Goku “brother”, and it was a bigger deal there.   When Goku learns the truth about Konkichi, he tells him to stop calling him “brother”, and then when after Konkichi repents, Goku calls him “brother” as he says his goodbyes.   It’s kind of sweet, especially since Goku’s actual brother turned out to be a real shitpiece.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Tien and Chiaotzu are on their way to Papaya Island, apparently on a ship full of karate guys, sort of like that ferry they used for the Dark Tournament on YuYu Hakusho.    This is a great cartoon.   It really is.
And that’s the Fortuneteller Baba Saga!   Next up, the waiting is over; here comes the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai.

Dragon Ball 140
Tumblr media
Goku’s still fighting Tien in their rematch from the 22nd Budokai Championship.   Tien kicks him into the wall on the side of the ring.    They keep rebuilding this ring, and they keep putting that wall there, and it always gets broken.
Tumblr media
Goku observes that Tien’s head is really hard (he headbutted him into the wall), and Tien says he hardened every part of himself.    Uh-huh-huh-huh... hard.
Tumblr media
I forgot why Goku did this but it’s pretty cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then they just start... chain wrestling?   In my Dragon Ball?  It’s more likely than you think.
Tumblr media
Is Goku going for a German suplex here?    Tien sort of fights it like this is just a matter of shifting his center of gravity, but Goku’s strong enough to lift a hundred Tiens, and Tien can fly, so this whole exchange seems kind of meaningless.
Tumblr media
It still looks cool though.  Tien finally breaks Goku’s hold with some sort of anime explosion thing, which is the most Dragon Ball counterhold I can imagine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tien is genuinely impressed.   The last time he saw Goku, he was nothing short of miraculous, and now he’s gotten even more amazing, and yet Tien thinks he’s found a weak point.   Well, more accurately, Tien’s found one aspect that Goku hasn’t improved upon in three years.
Tumblr media
And that’s speed.   I have to figure that training in this world is a real gamble.   Even if you have the natural talent to get stronger, you have no idea what the other guy will be able to do by the time you face him.   All Tien knew was how strong Goku was when he fought King Piccolo, and that he went on to train with Kami.   So the only thing Tien could do was to focus on surpassing Goku’s level when he fought King Piccolo, and then try to improve beyond his best guess of whatever Kami did for Goku.
Tumblr media
Based on the opening minutes of their fight, Tien seems to think that Goku’s a lot stronger and more skillful, but his speed’s about the same as it was against King Piccolo.   Does he really think Kami slacked off on that attribute?   Maybe not, but Tien seems to think that maybe he found a way to get faster that Goku must have overlooked.
Tumblr media
Of course, Goku’s still plenty fast, but Tien thinks that he’s faster, and that his superior vision powers will help him corner Goku in the end.   Goku spends the next part of the fight on the defensive, and that’s why Launch is so happy.
Tumblr media
Eventually, Tien sets up Goku for a ring-out, but Goku starts spinning like a top and this somehow lets him fly back into the ring.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goku gives Tien his due, and Tien declares victory.   Goku can follow Tien’s movements, but he’s not fast enough to beat him, so it’s just a matter of time until Goku loses.
Tumblr media
But Goku doesn’t seem too worried about it.
Tumblr media
Neither does Chi-Chi, although I think Chi-Chi isn’t really analyzing the fights so much as she’s admiring her man.
Tumblr media
Either way, Goku’s gonna take off some clothes.    Wait, what?
Tumblr media
This ends up taking a while, and everyone wonders what his problem is.
Tumblr media
When Goku finally gets his T-shirt off, it lands on the ground with a thud.
Tumblr media
Tien checks it out while Goku works on his boots and wristbands.   Turns out the shirt weighs fifty pounds.   What could it possibly be made of?
I did some quick calculations, because I’m a super nerd.   I estimate that you could ball up Goku’s shirt and stuff it in a 1 liter container, so we’ll go with that just to make the math easier.    50 pounds is about  22.7kg, so his shirt has a density of about 22.7 kg/L, or 22.7 g/mL.
The density of gold is 19.32 g/mL, so it’s not implausible, I guess, that Kami made a shirt out of pure gold, covered in some sort of durable cloth.   It’d have to have a volume a little bigger than 1L to weight fifty pounds, but maybe it’s a thicker weave than it looks.   There are denser materials, but not many.   Osmium and iridium are the densest elements of all, and they’re around 22.5 to 22.6g/mL.
Tumblr media
But the wristbands and boots all weigh fifty pounds too.   Good luck explaining the wristbands.   This is why power scaling is bullshit, by the way.    That stupid Death Battle video about Goku vs. Superman spent a lot of time crunching numbers that don’t make any sense to begin with, because none of this crap makes any sense in the real world.   Goku’s wristbands defy the laws of physics.    Don’t even bother trying to explain the man himself.   The same goes for Superman’s clothes, which are either indestructible because they’re from Krypton, or simply by clinging to Superman’s aura of invincibility.   He folds his Clark Kent clothes up and puts them in a tiny pocket in his cape, which is dumb because it would mean he has a huge lump of laundry swinging around on his cape, but he doesn’t.
Tumblr media
So you see fans jump on this stuff like “See!   He said his wristbands weighed fifty pounds in this episode!   That’s a real number!  We can do calculations with it!   They never bother to consider that there’s no real-world material dense enough to make a wristband that heavy.  There’s plenty of fictional materials in Dragon Ball that would explain it, but if we’re getting into that territory, then fifty pounds becomes meaningless, because it’s surrounded by concepts that cannot exist.
There’s also a lot of plot holes that come with these kinds of reveals.   Okay, so Goku’s been fighting all day today while wearing 250 pounds of weighted training clothes.    He’s probably at least 200 pounds himself.   Shouldn’t Tien have noticed before now that Goku’s a lot heavier than he should be?
Tumblr media
So with the weights off, Goku just sort of jumps around and does some “warm up” exercises, like he hasn’t been fighting this whole time.    I think at some point you’re just warmed up, and you’re good for a while.
Tumblr media
Tien admits that Goku’s faster, but he’s not that much faster, so he isn’t worried.
Tumblr media
Then Goku reveals that he swiped Tien’s belt while he wasn’t looking.
Tumblr media
Everyone has a chuckle at Tien’s pants falling down...
Tumblr media
Except Launch, who’s completely gobsmacked.   I like the whole “Oh, I’m covering my eyes because it’s too embarrassing to watch (buuuuut I’m gonna peek through my fingers...)
Tumblr media
Tien admits that he underestimated Goku’s speed, but he still isn’t licked, because he’s got a technique that’ll fix Goku’s wagon no matter how fast he is.   He’s just gotta get his pants back on.
Tumblr media
Goku thinks it might be the Ki-Ko-Ho, which Tien used to destroy the ring last time, but Tien refuses to use that again, since it’s dangerous for both of them, and Goku’s so fast that it’d probably miss anyway.   Yeah, but Tien could try blowing up the ring like he did before, right?   Or is that a bad strat in a semifinal match, since there’d be no ring for the finals?
Tumblr media
We don’t find out what it is in this episode, but Tien teases that if his three eyes missed Goku’s movements before, he’ll just have to go up to twelve.

Variations on a Theme
My fanfic is long enough that I start to worry that I may be repeating myself in places.   In particular, I feel like the villains sort of run together, although that’s arguably true for any long-running story.   Lots of people get the Joker and the Riddler mixed up, for example.   Your standard Batman villains are all going to play off the same themes: fear, chaos, power, dual-identity, genius, etc.   Some of them are bound to overlap eventually.
I thought about how this works with Dragon Ball’s villains.   In general, I feel like the major bad guys manage to be pretty distinct from each other, even though they’re basically all doing the same things.  I guess I should make a list.  Note that I don’t really have a firm definition of “major bad guy,” so if your fave didn’t make the cut, I wouldn’t read too much into that.
Emperor Pilaf: Wants to use the Dragon Balls to wish for world domination.   He seems kind of lazy and unfocused at first glance, but when you think about it, he puts a lot of time and effort into his goals.   It’s like he thinks Dragon Ball hunting is the quickest, easiest way to get what he wants, but it never actually works out that way, and he never seems to notice.
Red Ribbon Army: I’m sort of lumping General Blue and the other RR officers into this one.   They’re all cruel and ruthless in their search for the Dragon Balls, but they’re only doing it in service to a larger cause.   For most of the Red Ribbon Saga, it’s assumed that the Army wants to wish for world domination, just like Pilaf, because what else could they possibly want?    But you have to figure that a guy like General White wouldn’t be much better off before or after that kind of a wish.    He’d still be assigned to some Red Ribbon outpost, carrying out the will of his superiors.   He’d probably be richer and more powerful in a world ruled by the Red Ribbon Army, but in the end he’s doing it all for espirit de corps.
Mercenary Tao: He’s just in it for the money, and I suspect the money is really just a way for him to keep score, since his rates are so high that he’s he’s probably already a rich man.   Besides, he never pays for anything, so what does he need with money anyway?  Tao’s the first bad guy who’s so strong that he can just do whatever he wants.    He’s like a one-man Red Ribbon Army in that sense.   As an individual, he doesn’t have to worry about angry superiors or unruly subordinates.   I suppose his only real overriding motivation is his pride, as he refuses to accept defeat at the hands of Goku, even though he has no particular reason to keep fighting him.
Commander Red: The big twist of the Red Ribbon arc is when Staff Officer Black finds out that Red only wanted the Dragon Balls to become taller.   You’d think he’d rather have his right eye healed, but nope.   This is where we find out all the RR guys have been fighting for a completely meaningless objective.   The Army is already rich and powerful, and one could argue that they practically rule the world anyway, since they can more or less do as they please.   I think Red’s quest to become taller demonstrates that they’ve already peaked as a world power.   With nothing else to accomplish, Red’s applying his accumulated power on selfish desires.
Tien Shinhan: Essentially, he’s just a patsy for the Crane Hermit, who in turn is out to avenge the death of Mercenary Tao, who in fact isn’t even dead.   I suppose Tien’s character arc in the 22nd Budokai is really just him waking up to the fact that his whole life is pointless.    He’s just stealing and killing for other people’s benefit, not unlike Tao’s mercenary career.    His power was impressive, but his victories over Yamcha and Jackie Chun were empty, and his victory over Goku would have been empty as well if he hadn’t repudiated the Crane school during the fight.
King Piccolo/Piccolo Junior: I guess the big difference with King Piccolo is that he already ruled the world fifty years ago, and now that he’s been unsealed, he’s going to pick up where he left off.   Also, we eventually learn that he’s the evil side of Kami, and if one dies the other will cease to exist.   That puts an interesting spin on his villainy, since his greatest enemy can never truly be defeated.  Not unlike the Biblical Satan, his plan is to just to defile creation as much as he can until his inevitable end.   Like Tien, there’s a certain pointlessness to his brand of evil, which probably contributed to his reform.   I like to think that when Piccolo Junior became a martial artist, he began to appreciate the discipline and sportsmanship of it, to the point where he began to think of Goku an company as peers to be respected, instead of enemies to be destroyed.   And, as Kami observed, training Gohan was a way for Piccolo to leave a legacy behind, something he could never do as a Demon King.
Raditz: Really, Raditz only came to Earth to recruit Goku for a battle on some other planet.  What sets the DBZ villains apart is that they don’t even care about the Earth at all, and only see it as a stepping stone to some larger goal.  Upon learning about the Dragon Balls, he believed that his comrades would use them to bring him back to life.
Nappa: Not unlike Raditz, in the sense that he probably would have used the Dragon Balls to wish him back to life.  Nappa’s thought of breeding a race of Saiyan-Earthling hybrids suggests that he had some lofty dreams of his own for the future, but he was happy to put them aside when Vegeta suggested something more selfish.
Vegeta: The first guy to think of wishing for immortality.   The key difference between Vegeta and past villains is that he’s not just looking for a way to conquer a particular empire, or to kill lots of people.   He’s thinking ahead to battles he wants to fight in the future (i.e. Frieza), and he wants to keep conquering and killing forever.   I don’t think Vegeta ever truly wanted to be immortal for its own sake, but he saw it as a way to hedge his bets, in case he ever bit off more than he could chew.
All of Frieza’s henchmen: In a nutshell, they serve Frieza because they see that as the only way forward in a universe where Frieza is the strongest mortal in it.   There’s no freedom from Frieza, only freedom through Frieza, and your Zarbons and Captain Ginyus thrive in the organization by doing their jobs very well.  They think the universe is an extremely simple equation because of this, and they’re always shocked and horrified to learn that they’re mistaken.
Frieza: Basically all of the previous bad guys rolled into one.   He already rules the universe, by virtue of being the strongest guy in it, so he’s a lot like Red, Tao, and Piccolo on Earth.  He seeks immortality like Vegeta, but it almost feels like Red’s wish to become taller.    Frieza doesn’t really have anything else to wish for, you know?   He also planned to destroy Namek after getting his wish, just as Piccolo did when he got his youth restored, and he became a revenge-obsessed cyborg like Tao.
Garlic Junior:  Okay, he’s filler, but I still think he’s cool.    Garlic sort of doubled down on the whole “evil-for-evil’s-sake” gimmick that King Piccolo represented.   Unlike Piccolo, he’s not the evil half of anybody, and he’s not just looking to torment everyone on Earth.   Instead, his plan is to convert everyone on Earth to his cause, using the Black Water Mist.   I get the sense that none of this was really headed anywhere specific.    He spoke of resurrecting his dead father, but I have no idea what the purpose of that would be when he had already conquered the Earth and overthrown his enemies.   He reminds me a lot of Pilaf, and I almost wonder if Garlic is supposed to represent what Pilaf could have become if he’d tried a little harder, or stooped a little lower.
Dr. Gero: Revenge personified.    Akira Toriyama later established that Gero lost his son in the destruction of the Red Ribbon HQ, and that’s why he wanted revenge on Goku so badly, and that’s fine and all, though I liked the original implication that he just really, really liked the Red Ribbon Army as a concept, like a middle-aged wrestling fan who really misses WCW.   You could argue that Gero is the most nihilistic villain of the set, as his revenge plot involves multiple long term schemes, some of them arranged beyond his expected lifespan, and none of them were particularly concerned about the fate of the Earth.
Androids 17, 18, and 19: I’m assuming that 19 had some semblance of free will here.   None of these three had any stake in Gero’s plot, but they didn’t really have anything else going for them either.   I’m pretty sure 19 stuck with Gero because he wanted to be on the winning side, and maybe because Gero was the more powerful of the two.    By contrast, 17 and 18 turned on him at the first opportunity, and wandered around for a while before turning good.   Their counterparts in the Future Trunks timeline never reformed, which I always assumed was they were driven mad by boredom.    Of course, they were always designed to be fodder for Cell, so in a sense they were trapped in Gero’s vendetta whether they wanted to be or not.
Cell (The Best Villain): He’s a lot like Frieza if he had actually wished for immortality.   What would Frieza have done next?   Well, he’d probably sip wine and gloat for another hundred million years, so maybe this analogy doesn’t hold up.   The point is that Cell was designed to fulfil a very specific set of objectives, making him stronger than everyone, and then he just sort of had nothing else to do.    It’s very similar to Tien and Mercenary Tao’s lack of purpose, but since Cell is an inhuman monster, there’s no guarantee that he’d eventually  get sick of killing and destroying everything.
Babidi: He’s a lot like Commander Red, Frieza, Garlic, and Dr. Gero, in that he relies on others to do his dirty work.   You know, that’s actually a pretty long list.  All five of these dudes use different forms of manipulation to control their underlings.    Babidi uses mind control, and I suppose Garlic does too, though the Black Water Mist isn’t quite so well-defined.   Gero seems to be able to program his cyborgs to varying degrees of complaince.   Frieza uses on intimidation and cult of personality, and Commander Red seems to rely on military hierarchy and a sense of “we’re all in this together”.       Babidi is more direct about it.   If he wants someone on his team, he just uses his magic and makes them join his team, whether they would have shared his objectives or not.  He also wants revenge like Dr. Gero, and he has dreams of ruling the universe like several other past villains, but all of that seems to take a back seat to reviving Majin Buu.    That seems to be what makes him stand out.   Mind control is a bit cliche, but the real hook to Babidi is what he’s trying to use it to accomplish.   Each guy he brings to his side is just cannon fodder for winning the next guy, until he can finally get Buu on his team.   I’m pretty sure he could conquer the universe and kill the Supreme Kai with Dabura and Vegeta alone, but he can’t stand the thought of not having Buu on his team.  Except Majin Buu’s the one bad guy he can’t control.   If he had just left that one go, he would have been unstoppable.  Instead, he pushed too far and lost it all.
Majin Buu: This guy gets a lot of criticism for being short on personality, but I think that’s the point.   He’s a weapon, like Cell, and he’s even more devoid of purpose than the Crane School guys, King Piccolo, or the Androids.   He’s basically a walking natural disaster, practically begging the universe to stop him.   I never really thought about it before, but he’s a lot like Tien’s run as a villain.  Like, Tien met Majin Buu in the middle of that arc, and you’d never make that connection during that encounter, but it really is a similar kind of situation.  They both needed somebody to slap some sense into ‘em.
I thought about moving on to the villains from GT and Super, but this is pretty long already, so I’ll just call it here.  I think I’ve seen what I needed to see anyway.   A lot of these guys have similar power-sets and motivations.   Babidi and Dr. Gero are very similar in the sense that their revenge plans end up summoning an unstoppable weapon and unleashing it upon a defenseless Earth.
But the difference lies in the details.   For Gero, Perfect Cell was Plan C or D, a failsafe he never expected to live long enough to see in action.    Plan A was to tackle Goku in person by becoming an android himself, and everything else that happened was because of his initial failure to accomplish this.    Majin Buu, on the other hand, was Babidi’s first and only goal.    As much as he wanted to get revenge on the Surpreme Kai, he seemed much more fixated on Buu.   Killing the Kai was just a way to clear a path to Buu, or a fun thing to do with Buu once he got him.
This also puts some parallels in stark contrast.   When 17 kills Dr. Gero, it’s superficially similar to Buu killing Babidi.   The difference, though, is that Gero never trusted 17, and he was only activating him out of desperation.    Babidi really thought he had Buu figured out, and then he lowered his guard for just a moment and paid the ultimate price.    Which is ironic when you think about it, because we don’t usually think of Buu as being treacherous or sneaky.    17 comes across that way sometimes, but he’s pretty up front about his intentions.   Gero wasn’t exactly surprised when 17 turned on him.
And this is why I get pissed off when people who don’t watch the show try to dismiss it as the same thing over and over.   It’s not the same thing over and over, but the only way to be convinced of that is to take the time to sit down and experience Dragon Ball in depth.    I don’t like football, but I’m not gonna buy into the tired old joke of it being a bunch of guys running around in tight pants.   I have no idea how football works, but I’m not gonna pretend that there isn’t some deeper appeal, or that there’s no tactical or athletic contest going on, simply because I don’t like it.  A lot of people enjoy it, so there must be something to it, even if it’s not for me.   I just haven’t taken the time to study it.
Anyway, I’m concluding from this that I should probably take the time to study my own work, and maybe that would help me to shake some of these confidence issues.    I can talk myself into believing that my writing is better than I think it is, but maybe I need to analyze that in detail, and actually write the analysis down instead of letting it swirl around endlessly in my head.    I’ve always resisted this sort of thing because it feels like an ego trip, but maybe it’s been the opposite all along...
