Hey, hope you're doing okay. I hope you don't mind me asking, but I am rather new to the mattdrai fandom and I couldn't help but wonder:
Was Matthew really as bad as a lot of fic lead to believe in his earlier hockey years in Calgary? And was he really disliked in the room - where there rumours like that? So many fics build on this premise, and seeing him now in Florida and hearing all the nice things his teammates say about him and seeing the things he does himself and the insane good hockey he plays... it's hard to believe.
It's so strange also that it's so rarely mentioned that Leon was the one to be sent down to the minors, not Matthew.
Plus what I don't get: matthew is a lot hotter than Leon? why is it always told like Leon is the hottest dude on earth while Matthew is nothing? comparing early pics and pics from now... it's just not true? Leon looks good, a bit bland IMO, but Matthew is and was just hot in a very unique and special way. maybe because he isn't that bland generic good looking Leon is? But good looking in a special way? so that got a lot longer than I thought it would, hope you don't mind the ask.
i don't mind you asking at all! this is basically my roman empire so MY apologies if this gets unwieldy but i have FEELINGS about matthew's early fic portrayal lmao
in his six years on the flames, matthew was always one of the top five scorers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
his rookie year, he was sixth in rookie scoring
Tumblr media
the season he was picked for his first ASG, the flames were 16th in the league at the time all star rosters were announced and matthew was their top scorer.
Tumblr media
so it's not like he was the best player from a bottom of the league team or going because he was the home town boy, he was a playoff team's best player (both at the asg break and when the season was eventually suspended because of covid).
and even in his career worst year (2020-2022), he ended the year as their third best scorer and only six points behind johnny (the leader). and as one of calgary's beat reporters said in his end of the year review, Matthew was "good, but not quite as good as the Flames needed him to be."
Tumblr media
so i've never really understood why people were portraying him like that either and still haven't figure out if most of it was unreliable narrator kind of stuff or if some authors actually thought he was bad before he had his breakout season, but it doesn't reflect reality.
as for him being disliked in calgary, that all stems from jake muzzin flipping the puck at him, and the subsequent players only meeting that took place after it, in which matthew allegedly told the team he was upset they didn't join him in the scrum after and he was then told him it can't be a riot every night.
before that there were never any rumors that i'm aware of that he was unliked in the room, and in 2019 gio, who most people tend to think is the one who told matthew to tone it down, said this about another players only meeting:
Tumblr media
so while the 2021 players only meeting was a story because matthew wasn't playing like his usual self afterward, i've never thought it was indicative of him not being liked by his teammates. and honestly, you have to take it all with a grain of salt anyway because while guys obviously bullshit the media, at the practice after the players only meeting guys talked about how there was a general lack of emotion, and how they came out there trying to have fun with each other and put it behind them, and in the postgame the next night, gio specifically sites getting into scrums and mixing it up when asked how much more emotion they played with in that win compared to earlier losses, so if mixing it up was good the very next night, the math doesn't quite add up, yk?
but johnny did confirm in his spittin chiclets appearance about two weeks after the muzzin incident that matthew was pissed after they left him out to dry that night, and when asked about matthew's struggles that season darryl sutter said matthew needed to, and would, get back to playing to his identity, so the whole cause and effect of the muzzin incident on matthew's play that season isn't completely unfounded, but i do think multiple guys saying the team needed to play with more emotion, johnny saying in the chiclets episode that the guys skating off didn't find out about the puck flip until they saw it on sportsnet and saying he felt bad about it, and the new coach coming in and getting matthew to play back to his style shows that it wasn't as personal as it was made out to be.
anyway, the flames may not have be as tight knit as the panthers are, but matthew had his people there. he's bffs with hanifin and his friendship with sam bennett is part of what drew him to florida. johnny always says great things about him, blake coleman called him the heartbeat of the team, and was such an important voice in the room that the flames suffered when he and gudbranson were no longer around to tell sutter to chill the fuck out when he was being too hard on guys in the room.
he probably wasn't close with every teammate, most people aren't friends with all their coworkers, but he wasn't some sort of loner in that locker room.
as for the looks, that's all down to personal preference. leon is definitely very conventionally attractive and while matthew has definitely glowed up in the last few seasons, he was by no means ugly. i wouldn't even say he's really unconventionally attractive either. he's got a good face and was a cute teen and people who are like "oh no i find matthew tkachuk attractive now" have literally never made sense to me. but again! personal preference and all that.
again, my apologies if you weren't looking for THIS MUCH of an answer to your question but this isn't even all the sources i pulled up when i first got this ask so i did TRY to keep it short lol

hey! i know these take probably take a lot of work so dw abt getting to it, but i was wondering what your thoughts were on elias pettersson's skating? (also not sure if you've done this before, sorry) i love watching him play but i don't know anything about skating
lmao at one point our swedish friend said something like "why did his parents name him Generic Swedish Man" and that's truly how he skates imo
i think he's a fun example of a player who maybe isn't the most natural skater in the world, but was taught enough good mechanics that he can get around?
Tumblr media
his forward stride is just so fucking swedish lmao... i feel like most of the swedes tend to stay really low to the ice with their shoulders when they're striding, and you definitely see that with him. he also has that pretty typical cadence where he doesn't really move his feet just for the sake of moving them; he's efficient and generally gets a good amount of glide out of each stride.
he does have kind of a jerky motion sometimes that makes me wonder how much growth spurts have hit him? like he's getting his feet down in the right place for the most part, but there's kind of a like "uh oh" moment lol. it always looks like he's working with slightly more legs than his brain is prepared for
i've seen some nucks fans call his stride awkward or bad or whatever – which i think is interesting bc he is like. more technically sound than most nhl skaters imo? i feel like he's sort of been a victim of the thing where north american fans tend to interpret skating styles really differently and like. in general tend to react weird to european prospects who have generally sound technique but maybe don't look as """effortless""" as people are used to.
i do think he struggles a bit with his outside edges, and it sometimes makes his turns kind of strange.
like, when he did the fastest skater at the 2019 asg – he starts out pretty fast, and then bobbles the crossovers and loses the speed he had?
youtube
it's kind of hard to see, but his skating coach has posted a bunch of videos of him turning, and i feel like he has a lot of trademarks of someone who doesn't love the outside edge? he tends to rush his feet a lot more on turns – which tends to happen when people are insecure on one edge. when he glides turns, he picks up the inside foot & rides the other inside edge most of the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think he tends to kind of like lead the motion with his shoulders and get a little noncommittal with his hip alignment, which is probably why his outside edge feels unstable? (which is very like. you know. people in glass houses can't throw stones. which came first, the uglee crossovers or the hollering "THAT FEELS WEIRD!" at your coach. we are all in this together or whatever they say in high school musical 2)
also to be clear he's not a bad skater but he IS a victim of his coach constantly posting videos of him doing the same drill as jesper bratt. rip this man honestly. he is suffering worse than jesus due to daniel b's social media strategy. there are literally nucks fans being so mean to him in his skating coach's menchies.
this quirk DOES make me laugh tho because it truly cements him as The Most Generic Swede. he is the guy working his absolute hardest to be mediumaverage at skating and i love that about him.
also in one older video he mentions that his teenagehood blades are like. literally the flattest blades on earth outside of speed skating??? specs that mean nothing but apparently he rides a 7/8 hollow and a dual profile that's like a 13'/26' or something bizarrely long. and this was when he was a kid and weighed as much as a picture of himself?? truly like NO WONDER he straightlines fine and hates turning. man grew up skating on skis. in honor of this discovery here is a video from that era where he tries to turn and gets ejected so hard, it made me laugh:

long live Generic Guy honestly

Random thought right now is the fact after 4+ years nobody has ever figured where Nico and Nolan went to vacation during 2019 ASG break…
I remember people thinking that they went to places like the Bahamas, Europe, Canada. Though ASG is only a 3 day break hmmMmmm.

Since 2020, there has been a wave of former spooks, spies and mandarins appointed to influential positions within TikTok, particularly around content and policy – some of whom, on paper at least, appear unqualified for such roles.
For example, while simultaneously being the Content Policy Lead for TikTok Canada, Alexander Corbeil is also the vice president of the NATO Association of Canada, a NATO-funded organization chaired by former Canadian Minister of Defense David Collenette. In order to join TikTok, Corbeil left his job at the SecDev Foundation, a U.S. State Department-funded security think tank. Corbeil’s work focused on Middle Eastern security and in particular on the war in Syria and what NATO’s role should be.
Another NATO-linked new recruit is Ayse Koçak, a Global Product Policy manager at the company. Before joining TikTok last year, she spent three years at NATO. Like Corbeil, Koçak had special expertise in Middle Eastern politics, including a year’s tour in Iraq as the organization’s deputy senior civilian representative.
Foard Copeland, who works on TikTok’s trust and safety policy, is also an ex-NATO man. Copeland previously worked as a desk officer for NATO, as well as for the Department of Defense. Between 2011 and 2021, he also worked for U.S. contractor Development Alternatives Incorporated (DAI), spending much of that time in Afghanistan. DAI has long been accused of being a CIA front group, perhaps with some justification. In 2009, for example, DAI agent Alan Gross was arrested in Cuba and sentenced to 15 years in prison for spying, espionage, and his part in efforts to destabilize the government.
Perhaps the most worrying NATO alumnus, from a public perspective, is new Feature Policy Manager Greg Andersen. According to his own LinkedIn profile, until 2019, Andersen worked on “psychological operations” for NATO.
[...] NATO, however, is far from the only organization newly connected to TikTok. The company’s new Global Lead of Integrity and Authenticity, Chris Roberts, is a former senior director of Technology Policy at the Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG), a powerhouse strategy and consulting firm started by late-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. The ASG has been perhaps the major staffing source for President Biden’s administration, with at least 10 ASG employees appointed to key positions in national security, state and foreign policy positions.

february writing update
i made a post like this in november thinking it could be a monthly thing, then forgot. ah well, nevertheless,
currently writing
bear bear au: fic where morgan is cursed to be a bear. he befriends josh, who is a hunter living alone in the woods, but josh has no way of knowing that he’s really a human… or does he…. just over 5k words of this atm.
wanting to write
connors asg fic: something to do with the fact that both connors went to the asg. obviously. probably smut. this should not take long once i get around to finding An Idea.
rcaf au: wwii fighter pilots au during the BoB. the rcaf centennial is in april, the jets have jerseys inspired by them, and my great grandpa was in the rcaf during the war. it’s like it was cooked up for ME! this would be a joshmorgan au and almost certainly have character deaths past and present. if you have suggestions for which current jets you think i should kill off for maximum emotional impact lmk (not gonna kill of josh or morgan) (this time…)
asoiaf au: maaaan i wanna get back to my jets asoiaf au wips.. one of them at least. my kcscheifs night’s watch mark x wildling kc au lives ever in my heart. and in my google docs.
kaiju au: technically this concept has been around since 2019, but i’ve been back on my goji kick again this year. basically, scientist (or civilian) x ex-soldier in a post apocalyptic world where the big monsters have destroyed human civilization. reluctant allies forced to work together to survive -> lovers. this used to be a nikpate concept but i’m retired. mayhaps niky nino…

i mean if you’re gonna put that in the tags already: too 5 sidnate stories you wanna write, lol
1. the sequels to can't stop won't stop where Sid mates Nate during the COVID pause, and then Nate shows up to the bubble not realizing he's pregnant...
2. the other SidNate A/B/O story, 75k of slow burn where Sid makes Nate wait until the ASG in 2019 in order to start sleeping together even though they imprinted on each other right after Nate got drafted
3. the Tim Horton's barista/donutier AU where Sid is a customer and Nate is pretty mature for his age, actually
4. the PWP where Sid takes the adorably intense fuckboy rookie he's picked up like an adoring puppy and offers him up to Mario for some threesomes
5. the Sidbot AU where Nate, Gabe, and EJ work in a machine repair shop in a dystopian future, all three of them playing beer league hockey (although Gabe also has an OnlyFans), and then one day Mario Lemieux comes into the shop to get Nate to come help train the Penguins' newest hockeybot, who has a whole new software system and needs special care because his hardware is unusual (look. sexbots are cheaper than custom-made hockeybots. S1D is going to be great on the ice, he just needs to have a personal assistant to make sure his prior subroutines don't become a distraction.)

Wip/Last Line Wip tag game.
Oi! Hello Yall! i Have been tagged by my Buddies and Besties @cowandcalf @merlin-wolfgang-trades-hale @ellena-asg @mayberrycryptid
For the Wip Tag Game and the Last Line Wip Tag game. So I've decided to answer them all in one. This is a segment for the for the current Pokemon Prompts I'm writing, (While I struggle with the Prompts from the, now outdated, 2019 Inktober List (that I am DETERMINED TO FINISH), In this case an H50/McDanno fic!
This is less of a "last line" and more of a last few paragraphs. It is nearly done. I hope yall enjoy it!
" Steve had told him all about the deal he had made with CHarizard, about finding Charizard a place he could be safe and taken care of. Danny knew Steve had been relentlessly searching for just such a place. Danny knew the current two front runners were the Charicific Valley or one of the Lental Islands. Danny knew that Steve preferred these areas because CHarizard could live free. In the valley he’d be surrounded by his own kind and since the Lental Islands were No-Catch zones he’d never have to worry about humans again. He knew Steve had put out feelers to certain Professors and Researchers about trustworthy trainers, incase Charizard didn’t want to live wild.
Much to Danny’s upset Steve had, apparently, never considered that Charizard was already in a safe place with a trainer that could take care of him."
I hope this doesn't give away too much of the story!
As to tagging. It seems like everyone I know has been tagged, multiple times, lately lol. So If you see this I want you to consider yourself tagged. Whether we're friends, followers, or mutuals, or none of the above. Feel free to share!!!

Hey, Jem, merry Christmas/happy holidays! I just had a KrisErik brainwave out of nowhere, do with it what you will.
So, what if Kris and Erik got together at the 2011 All Star Game (they were team mates too!), and were together for six years, Erik breaking things off in the heat of the moment after the 2017 Eastern Final, leading to mutual heartbreak for a while.
Then, they get back together casually at the 2019 ASG, having to negotiate the distance, but nothing is serious. However, Erik is doing all he can to get back east somehow.
When Erik finally arrives in Pittsburgh, he's desperate to get back into Sid and Geno's good books, hence the overtures. But, like, him and Kris have been lowkey back together for years now. But, no one on the team knows yet.
Sid and Geno find out when they go to Kris' place, and find Erik there with him, seemingly moved in. Bonus points if Sid and Geno are the last ones to figure it out.
Oh my godd this ask has been on my mind all day in the best way ! I really want to write a fic about this and I’m gonna, but I write really slowly 😭 so I’m gonna post this now so other kriserik club friends can maybe get inspired too 💙💙💙 let’s do our part for the fics !!!
Also merry Christmas, lovely !! I hope you had the best day 🩷💘💞 thank you for sending me your kriserik thoughts, I want to hear everything kriserik, always 🩷

pray tell what is your headcannon for mattdrai secretly dating during the asg based off of leon's media post game
ohhhh my god okay so please understand that this is probably closer to "wouldn't it be funny if" than a headcanon but that media scrum after, where leon is really insistent that the "fuck you" was just a joke ... it just made me think like, what if it was ALL an inside joke. what if they started hooking up in like 2018 or 2019 and were well along the progression of hooking up to falling in love by the time that matthew went into his peak friendship tour antics era in 2019-20
which is obviously deeply annoying to leon for real but also, it's definitely really funny for both of them to pretend they can't stand each other when they're actually fucking each other's brains out at every possible opportunity
that's the concept

Pens Twitter is really toxic right now, just a warning for all. I came across a tweet by a fan account saying that our current 5-game losing streak is unacceptable when everyone else in the East is winning right now and we we are falling behind fast. And that the game we should've only lost was the Isles game. First of all, again any team can beat anyone at a single night as you'd always say. Last I checked a lot of winning streaks have been snapped recently? Like are they aware things can change really fast in the NHL? Plus it's only January, all teams have not played at least 1 team yet, no major trades yet? We haven't even made it to the All Star break where momentum can significantly change with the mega long break. Wordspill inconing.
The way they talk about the Pens, you'd think all Metro teams are on simultaneous 7-game winning streaks (spoiler: they are not). Even I am frustrated but come to think about it: it is easy to be loud about the your own team's struggles when you just look at the out of town scoreboard every time ignoring other factors like games in hand, strength of schedule, team health. Injuries can't be predicted, so can slumps and hot streaks. For proof momentum matters and nothing is sustainable: remember in the shortened 2019-20 season, the Flyers were on a roll with a 9-game W streak, quickly took 1st seed then the league pause happened? When the bubble playoffs happened 4 months later they were not the same team anymore and were eliminated in R2 by an Isles team that lost 7 straight heading to the pause. The Blues and Bruins both had high odds of a SCF rematch as they were leading the league in March, then things went south at the playoff bubble. As much as we rag on the Oilers, they had a massive losing streak in January 2022 that prompted them to fire their coach and five months later they made it to the WCF.
The Pens won't be losing for this long. We'll be playing some West teams and non-divisional opponents next, our low momentum now can quickly go up. Once we get a few players back for a compressed schedule from January onwards, it can change the way we're playing. All the bounces that didn't go our way now will come soon when we need it the most. After the ASG break, there'll be a lot of team and player movements guaranteed that can change the whole makeup of the league standings. I'm open to the Pens trading for someone to hopefully fill our current needs - but again we have to wait for Sully to make either the right adjustments. Nobody, just no team can only do so well or bad for long. No team will get all the bounces all the time, neither will be this unlucky either. The comeback wins now could quickly become blown leads later. Even the players themselves have already said it's an 82-game season with ups and downs, why not listen to the very people who play the game?
I quickly came to realize there are quite a few types of fans in sports:
Bandwagon or Fair-weather
Ones That Know Everything™
Haters
Fans of the game
No real way to distinguish between them consistently, nor do I really care most of the time. The Haters over on twitter will continue to do what they do, Sports Social Media much like any other form of interaction comes with the caveat that so long as you don't interact with or consume the hateful stuff you can mostly stay away from it. Block what you need to or take a break from there if needed.
Nothing anyone says right now other than the people in that room matters. We cannot fix them as fans, no matter how we wish we could at times. Its all about staying positive and riding the waves the sport throws at you. I know we're all varying levels of upset about this winless streak, but I am firmly in the know as a Jacksonville Jaguars(NFL) and Arizona Coyotes(NHL) fan that the wins will come, sometimes even at the most unexpected of times. You can't always be good, but you won't always be bad. Its the life cycle of a sports team
