DAY 12 AT THE VILLAGE, DAY 8 OF THE GAMES: MEN’S 200M BUTTERFLY FINALS
Four days after you won gold, the roles are reversed. This time, you are the one in the crowd, screaming until your lungs collapse, as you watch Johnny’s wide wing span take over his entire lane. You watch as Johnny comes up for a breath, mouth open wide and gasping for air, handsome face drenched in water and determined eyes covered by the black goggles. It’s the final lap and there’s only a short distance between him and the predicted runner up in this race.
You and the girls–Sooyoung, Yerim, Seungwan, Seulgi, and Joohyun–squeeze each other’s hands with such intensity. Jaehyun, who is not participating in any event that day, rests his hands on your shoulders, his grip tightening as Johnny’s opponent picks up the pace. The intensity of his hold doesn’t even phase you, not when your new boyfriend is so close to obtaining an Olympic gold medal for himself.
The small crowd with the Aquatic Center roars with excitement and adrenaline as Johnny and his competitor reach for the wall at the exact same time. None of you can determine the winner from that close call from your point of view, so you impatiently wait for the results to appear on the big screen.
Johnny’s large body is bobbing in the water, goggles already ripped from his head, and hands gripping tightly to the edge of the pool. Commotion erupts from all around you, with Jaehyun’s arms shaking your body and Yerim’s screams ringing in your ear. It’s then you realize that your man had done it–he earned the top spot on the podium. You’re crying at this point, so happy that he achieved his lifelong dream and that you were there to witness this historic moment.
You were there for him two days prior when the boys won Silver for their relay. You felt the disappointment dripping from Johnny’s features when he found out he was mere seconds behind first, just a hand width away, but you are sure this victory makes up for it.
“That’s your boy,” Jaehyun whispers into your ear and a surge of pride rushes through your veins. That is your boy–he is the light of your life, the shining sun in your darkest days, your greatest love, and now your one and only Olympic gold medalist. Your Eagle. Your Big Bird. Your Johnny.
Your ears are attuned to his voice, Johnny’s victorious yells carrying through the noise. You wish you are able to run down to the area but your team was already let out with a warning once. You do not want to take that risk again. Instead, you make your way down to where the interviews are held and park yourself behind where Tiffany Hwang, Team Korea’s swimming correspondent, records her bits.
As Johnny saunters over to the streaming area, he catches your eye, does a full scan of you draped in his swimming parka, and has the audacity to smirk and send a flirty wink in your direction. Everything romantic between the two of you is so new, meaning four days old, Johnny’s actions leave you weak in the knees. It makes you lose your balance for a second and you are embarrassed at how much your best friend, now boyfriend, can have such an effect on you. You wonder if anything you do would garner the same reaction. So as Johnny steps into position to start his post-swim interview, you start to formulate a little scheme.
“Congratulations on winning gold, John,” Tiffany greets with a bright smile. The reporter has always been pretty and a sight for sore eyes but there is a better view standing just a few meters away.
Johnny places himself in a way where he can see you in his sightlines. The two of you may not be public yet but he is so close to saying your full name into the microphone when asked who he dedicates his win to. “Thank you, Tiffany.”
“It’s so great to see another Korean-American such as yourself earn a grand title such as Olympic Gold Medalist. How does it feel to finally be a part of that small inspirational group of Asian Americans?”
“Amazing. A dream come true really. I just hope that people who look like me,” he pauses, takes a second, remembering that Tiffany is another Korean-American, “people like us continue to work hard to achieve our goals.”
Tiffany smiles and nods in agreement.
“We didn’t have many prominent Asian or AAPI athletes to look up to growing up. But we’re on the rise. Our time is here and now. Representation matters and I hope my achievement will inspire all the Asian greatness that is to come.”
Johnny steals a glance at you and finds you with a hand over your heart. “I love you,” you mouth, “I am so proud of you.”
Johnny wants to reply, to declare his love for you to the world, but you are still his little secret. He wants to keep you to himself before the rest of the world makes sense of your relationship. His eyes shine with the brightness of a million stars as he looks at you and he hopes you are able to read every emotion behind them. And you do.
The swimmer forgets the task at hand as he continues to stare into your eyes. You shake your head and gesture back to Tiffany, prompting your boyfriend to turn back to the camera.
“John?” Tiffany’s voice calls.
“Sorry, yes?”
“That’s alright. Still soaking in your victory?”
Johnny catches your eye again and you laugh. “Something like that, yeah. What were you saying?”
As Tiffany shoots out another question that goes in one ear and out the other, his gaze remains on you. He sees one of your hands, covered by his oversized sleeve, coming up to cup the side of your face. The expression you wear shifts almost immediately, the innocent and proud grin you wear turning into one that he’s seen behind closed doors. Your lids droop to mirror the eyes of a siren and your lips curve into a smile that drives him wild.
And just when Johnny thinks that is all, your tongue drags along your bottom lip before poking the inside of your cheek. It’s a lewd action to hint what is to come and his mind immediately comes up with a billion scenarios on how it will play out. His pupils dilate, his heart rate increases, and he feels something twitch below his torso. Quickly covering his lower half with the towel he was given, he fixes his stance and gives you a warning stare. The sound of your laughter reaches his ears and flares him up even more. No amount of laps in the cool down pool will help him out of this mess.
With his gaze zoned in on your lips, Johnny barely recognizes that the word you are mouthing is “focus” before Tiffany calls him back to reality once again.
“Sorry again,” he apologizes sheepishly.
“No worries. I was just asking how you are going to celebrate.”
Johnny gulps. A celebration is definitely in order. It’s just not one he’d like to reveal to the world at this very moment. “With my team, of course. A couple of beers in our room and games should do.”
“The usual suspects that are in your vlogs, I suppose?”
Johnny shoots her a grin. “How ever did you know?”
“A lucky guess,” she shrugs. Johnny likes how casual Tiffany is. Since she’s followed his career since he first started, interviews with her are like talking to an older sister. She’s on the younger side compared to other correspondents but her youthfulness is what makes her so likable. “Thank you for your time, Johnny, and congratulations again. Take your time to soak in this win–a moment like this is one to be celebrated.”
“No, thank you, Tiffany.”
The camera turns off and the crew begins to prepare for the next event. Just as Johnny turns to leave, the sportscaster calls him back.
“Yeah?” he answers.
Tiffany, in her hot pink suit and matching nails, gestures to him to come closer. When he is within reach, her manicured hand cups her mouth and she whispers in his ear, “If you want to keep your relationship hidden for a bit, stop being so obvious, Suh.”
Johnny chokes. “What?”
Tiffany raises her perfectly filled in brows at him. “It’s like you two want to get caught, I’m trying to save you from the publicity, you doof!” She moves to slap him and he winces.
Tiffany also motions to his lower body. “You need to keep it in your pants,” she scoffs with a hint of disgust.
“It’s her fault,” Johnny whines, bringing the towel closer to conceal his growing problem.
“Fly high, butterfly,” Tiffany mocks, mimicking your voice. “Ugh. You two are hopeless.”
“Jae says the exact same thing,” Johnny retorts.
Tiffany rolls her eyes. “Get outta here, I have interviews to conduct and you have–” her voice trails off, “–celebrations to attend to.” He takes that as his cue to leave.
Since his event was one of the last of the night, the medal ceremony arrives fairly quickly. And although taking his place on the podium is a moment he’s dreamed about his entire life, Johnny cannot help but think of what is to come after. His heart, mind, and soul are all clouded by thoughts of you. And unfortunately for him, so are other parts of his tall, endowed body.
The minute he’s out of camera focus and back in the ready room, Johnny finds you grinning in the back corner. You are the only thing he sees as he makes his way towards you. His big hands pry his unzipped parka apart and plant themselves at your sides. He gives you a tight squeeze before tugging your body to his front. His ears pick up on the smallest noise that escapes your pretty lips.
Johnny doesn’t care who else is in the room. He needs to set one thing straight with you.
“You’re a menace, Flip,” he practically groans into your ear, his head then dropping to your neck in defeat. Johnny’s wet hair drips onto your skin and the dry parka that dwarfs your body but it doesn’t phase you—you’re used to the way water feels.
You grin back up at him, fingers circling around the cold first place medal around his neck. The featherlight skims sends tingles down his spine and he shivers. Nothing compares to your touch. Nothing will ever compare to you.
“How so?”
Your coyness riles Johnny up even more. “You know what you did,” he almost whines, voice dipping low.
“What did I do?” Opposite of your lover, your voice raises in pitch.
“Y/N,” he warns.
“Johnny,” you reply cheekily in the same tone, fluttering your lashes at him.
Another groan escapes him because now that he has you—now that you are officially his—Johnny will never win. He steals a kiss, one not too long or intense, but just enough to preview what is to come before pulling away. His supple tongue quickly swipes against your pouting lip. “What are you doing to me?” He whispers into your mouth.
“Well, there are things I want to do. I just can’t do them here.”
A frustrated glare flashes in his eyes and you laugh at the words he is holding back. Johnny’s large hand engulfs yours as he drags you out of the area. “We’re leaving. Now.” Your giggles bounce off the hallways as you rush back to the housing complex. Something tells you it will be a night to remember.
(Jeno sees the two of you escape and he sighs. He turns to his roommates and the girls who are standing next to him. “Great. We’ve been sexiled.”
“Again?” Sooyoung whines.
“So…anyone down for getting shit faced tonight so we don’t have to deal with their noises?” Mark proposes.)

what if i wrote an IT competitive swimming AU... what then...
i have so many fic ideas and so little time... in the meantime... the losers as competitive swimmers (this is so niche oh my god)
lots of hyperspecific headcanons can be found under the cut lol
mike hanlon: he's a butterflyer mainly but also strong in backstroke. weirdly good at counting his strokes and has never hit his head going into the wall on backstroke. his favorite race is the 100 fly, but he's not the type to complain when his coach puts him in the 200 fly or an IM race (IM is individual medley, it means all the strokes back to back in one race). he brings snacks to share at competitions but doesn't let anyone eat on deck. got into competitive swimming fairly late (about 14) because he enjoyed doing the distance swim when he was getting his lifeguard qualifications. he's a strong swimmer and probably has the most endurance out of the group, but not in a long distance race kinda way, more in a "i could swim across the lake if push comes to shove" kinda way. he's the only one who can correctly keep track of what rep they're on during training, everyone else always turns to him when asked.
bill denbrough: he's been with the swim club since he was seven and has basically always been a freestyle (basically the same as frontcrawl, except you can technically do whatever you want. everyone does frontcrawl though) sprinter. excels at the 50m freestyle sprint and broke the club record for it when he was seventeen. he leads warmup and organizes everyone for cheers and travel competitions. dislikes breaststroke but is frustratingly good at it so his coach frequently makes him swim it. can't stop hitting his head on the wall on backstroke and has been banned from doing crossover turns (special turn between backstroke and breaststroke used in IM, your face gets very close to the wall) in races after an unfortunate incident involving his face and the wall. he's responsible for drawing mini heat sheets (packets of paper with all of the race information, including athlete names and lanes) on everyones arms, he does a little grid too, its all very professional. he is the keeper of the spare caps and goggles. when they were younger he kept track of everyone during warm-up to ensure no one got trampled in the mess of people.
stanley uris: backstroker through and through, wishes there was a 400m backstroke, once his coach put him in the 400m freestyle and he did backstroke out of spite. his best race is the 200 backstroke. he takes every opportunity presented to him to talk shit about butterfly. makes sure the losers don't miss their races and is the only person allowed to touch the heat sheet. you know he cares because he highlights all the losers names in colorcoded markers on his heat sheet. he's not here to be the best he's just here to humble richie at backstroke and have fun with his friends. he gets split times for the other losers and keeps track of everyones personal best and qualifying times. he complains his friends are the ones always nearly missing their races but he has been known to get distracted highlighting everyones names on the heat sheets when he really should be warming up.
beverly marsh: good at every stroke so mainly an IMer but she's a big fan of 200m races which disturbs everyone around her (200m races are detested by many for being an awkward distance between a sprint and long distance). is really good at dives and turns and has on more than one occasion gotten disqualified for going too far under water off the dive. has an extremely powerful kick but frequently forgets to put strength into her pulls. if richie's doing backstroke in an edge lane she will lean over the edge of the pool and mimic kicking with her arms ("kick faster!") because she knows he hates it. has planned 99% of team building exercises which always go terribly wrong in some way but she finds a way to save them from disaster. past team building activities have included: laser tag, bowling, and tracking down a ghost house in the middle of the woods. this last one was not well received but they did find the house so she won.
ben hanscom: long distance swimming legend, he's a freestyler and his best race is the 1500m. incredible at knowing what pace to go and recognizing how much energy he has left so he doesn't go too slow off the start but doesn't die in the first half either. is strongest in the third quarter of a race and tends to overtake people during this period because he doesn't let the pressure get to him (the third quarter is typically the hardest and most stressful of the race, you are tired and likely in pain, but don't yet have the adrenaline rush from being in the final stretch). he used to crash and burn during the third quarter, but one day something just kind of clicked and he got it. he still gets nervous before races but when he's in the water he doesn't falter. he always gets the best spots at meets and the losers build bag forts in the bleachers to camp out in for the long stretches between races. he also always finds the best places to hangout outside the pool deck while the losers are waiting for finals to start.
richie tozier: mainly a flyer but he got really tall when he was sixteen and his coach started putting him in more backstroke races, he's pretty even between the two strokes at this point and does a lot of IM. number one breaststroke hater in the WORLD, it hurts his knees because he does it wrong but no matter what corrections people make he can't get it right. does not understand how people like breaststroke and isn't convinced it doesn't hurt for everybody. cheers a ridiculous amount. his voice is always hoarse for days after a competition because he cheers so loudly. he's always leading group cheers, even when he was a crackly-voiced 13 year old he was insisting he lead cheers. he's really loud because of it and is great at throwing his voice over the noise of the pool. they're always at races until the very end because ben is usually in the 1500 and richie will cheer for nearly 19 minutes until all the losers are rushing to the end of ben's lane to get him water and help him stay standing and richie can just give him a thumbs up because his voice is totally gone.
eddie kaspbrak: was a breaststroker for most of his life until one day his coach was like. yknow what. fuck you. butterfly time. and now he's a flyer. his best race is the 200IM though and he hates 200m fly. he gets really in his head about it and has on multiple occasions completely died in the third quarter because he's so anxious. he always gets out of the pool after 200m flys feeling like he's going to black out because he's so stressed about it. every once in a blue moon though he just doesn't stress for some unknown reason and does amazing. loses his mind at the losers when they don't wear flipflops on deck or in the showers. like do they know how gross pool decks are? no they want infections? if they're doing single length sprints during practice the other losers will walk his flip flops to the other end of the pool so he doesn't have to touch the deck with his bare feet. you would think swimming would be the most miserable sport in the world for him due to the general... disgustingness... of pools but he loves the sport so much that it manages to outweigh his neuroses most of the time. hates backstroke, its a stupid stroke and he keeps getting water up his nose and what if he hits his head, why do mike, stan, and richie even stand it?
also i did my best to explain anything that might be unintelligible if you weren't deep in the trenches of competitive swimming as a teenager but if anyone has questions, either about the AU, or just clarifications about swim racing in general, feel free to ask! i love talking about this stuff.

I knew reading Aubrey Gordon's book 'What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat' was going to bring up a lot of big feelings for me, but I wasn't expecting them to be about swimming.
See, I was a competitive swimmer as a kid. My sister and I were on one year round team and a second neighborhood team in the summers. My sister was a sprinter, but for me it was all about distance events, relays, and the 200m butterfly. Swimming made chubby little 13 year old me feel powerful and graceful, something even my 11 years of ballet hadn't granted.
In chapter 2 of her book, Aubrey Gordon talks about her own experiences as a competitive swimmer who specialized in butterfly, experiences nearly identical to my own. We aren't the only ones, as Aubrey goes on to say she's found many like us, fat kids who loved the way being in the water made them feel and loved swimming the butterfly despite its intense physical demands and higher difficulty.
I don't swim competitively anymore. I'm an adult with a business to run and too many demands on my time to spend much of it at the pool. Still, this connection with other fat kids, this shared experience, healed a little part of the fat kid in me. We found ways to love ourselves, to revel in our bodies and the way they moved, no matter how hard the rest of the world tried to tear us down.
I can't wait to see where else this book is going to take me

Secret Santa Fest 2023 - this moment right here
Tumblr media
Today's Secret Santa Fest 2023 fic "this moment right here" is a naughty take on the Olympic swimming with the wetness spreading out a little further than the pool.
Summary:
Draco Malfoy has just become Britain's newest record holder for the 200m Butterfly.
Hermione Granger thinks he deserves to be well-rewarded.
A Muggle AU including team bonding, shower sex, and a healthy dose of debauchery in a public changing room.
Deliciously naughty, but oh so nice.

i was going to post a snippet of the rockstar au.. but spontaneously decided that i hate that entire fic so here's my tk and owen fic <3
TK was ten when Owen first thought that he would lose his son.
When he had dragged his limp son out of the community swimming pool before the lifeguards could even think to move. It had been a meeting for the swim team, one TK had convinced his mother to let him join. His ex-wife never thought to mention it to him. He knew why, because he never would have said yes.
But TK had asked him so excitedly a week ago, if he would come and watch his race–the 200m butterfly. He’d agreed, he never could say no to his son, and in recent years he had been doing all he could to repair their damaged bond, so he had agreed.
Gwyn was on a business trip and TK was staying with him for a few days. Owen had picked him up from school yesterday, wondering when his son had gotten so tall as he passed a few jokes between his group of friends before walking up to his father and following him to the car.
TK who insisted by going that now, who glared at him whenever he dared utter the name “Tyler”. Some part of Owen was thankful for that, to no longer look in his son’s eyes and call him by his brother’s name, seeing only the kid he failed to save looking back at him.
Now water was dripping from Owen’s hair, chlorine soaked into his striped button down, making a home for itself in his shoes. He hadn’t hesitated, he never would again.
TK’s hair was darker now, plastered to his skin by the water, his eyes were closed, his lips and the tip of his nose going a jarring shade of blue. He hadn’t been under that long, Owen had been watching him like a hawk, still so anxious to be near water, to let his son swim more than an arm’s length away.
It had only taken him the time to run down the bleachers and leap into the water before he got to his son, pulling the small body to his chest and making quick work of swimming towards the nearest edge of the pool.
Owen knew he was strong, much stronger than he had been all those years ago, but he hadn’t realised it until he had scooped his son out of the water, placing him carefully on the wet concrete and pulled himself up after him.
“TK?”
Owen wrapped his hand around the top of TK's shoulder, where it met the base of his neck. He tried to ignore how cold TK felt to the touch, blaming it on the water, but the temperature of his skin had anxiety curling in Owen’s gut. It had been an indoor pool, heated, why did his son feel so cold? "TK? Tyler, can you hear me?”
He couldn’t help but think that he had cursed his son by giving him that name.

college catradora au part one
applying for a03 because somehow i haven't gotten one yet, but for now here is the first chapter.
Watching Adora participate in sports was Catra’s favorite pastime. Even since elementary school when she would rough up the other kids in tag or two-hand touch football, she was mesmerized. Even as a senior at Frightview High School, Catra couldn’t take her eyes off of her girlfriend as she set up to high jump. This was the third jump at 5’8”, Adora’s last shot. It was just her and a girl from a school up north who had already failed out at this height. A trophy and a state ring were on the line.
The spectators began to clap. A nice, slow rhythm that slowly sped up until her feet could follow. Adora would love that. The state competition would be the only meet that there would be such a crowd.
This was Catra’s favorite part to watch. Adora pushed off, soaring over the bar, then snap, she folded. The bar was left untouched.
She rolled off the mat with her usual swagger as the spectators clapped. She was the state champion in the high jump, but she wouldn’t show her excitement. Catra clapped the loudest, waiting for Adora to come close enough to the fence. After grinning and getting a hug from her teammate, Lonnie, she ran to her girlfriend.
Much to the disapproval of the race officials, Catra hopped over the fence and threw her arms around Adora. “Oh my God! Oh my God!”
Adora laughed and hugged her tighter. “Yes!”
“Only athletes on the track!” the race official yelled. “Get off the track or you will be disqualified!”
“Oh, shit,” Adora laughed. “Catra, you gotta go. I’ll be over to the tent as soon as I can.”
“I love you! Oh my God I love you,” Catra yelled as she jumped back over the fence.
The high jump podium was announced with Adora at the top. She bit down on her medal, folding her arms and puffing her chest out. Catra focused her camera and clicked. She was more of a gymnast than a runner, so the only way that she was able to worm her way onto the bus and into the hotel with the track team was with her camera. Head Coach Spinner had made her promise that she would take good pictures of everyone. Catra took everyone to mean Adora with a few pictures of other people sprinkled in between.
Adora ran around the fence and jumped into Catra’s waiting arms. This was what she had been waiting for. Although she also did the 200m and 400m, the high jump was her specialty. There wasn’t much time for rejoicing, however. The 4x400m, the last event of the last high school meet, was set to begin soon. “I have to go warm up. Take some good pictures of me.” Adora kissed Catra and gave her the medal from around her neck. “Hold onto it for me.” She winked and saluted, half joking, as she walked away.
Laughing and trying to dispel the butterflies, Catra jogged back to her spot at the fence and refocused her camera on the 800m runners. Even though she was seeing her peers through the lens, all she could think about was Adora’s 4x4. She had been talking about it for weeks, analyzing every hand off, which teams would be the biggest threat, and which girl she would need to hang with.
Catra watched as Coach Spinner approached Adora. She knew that Coach would be totally kissing her ass (which she totally deserved) and talking her through the race. She would never give that same help to any of her athletes other than Adora. She exacerbated that point as she walked straight past the runner who had just gotten a 2:10 800m and was going in for a hug.
There were more events to be photographed as everyone excitedly waited for the last event. The girl’s team was neck and neck with their biggest rival: Bright Moon (usually shortened to “B-Moon”). As expected, the 4x4 was to be the determining event.
Adora’s teammates were on the edges of their seats as the gun went off. Lonnie was the first runner. She was fast, but tended to burn out by the last fifty meters. The hand off went well, but in those few steps, B-Moon’s first runner was able to get a small gain. The second girl took off like a shot, chasing the first place runner down. She had caught her rival, giving the third runner a good shot.
Then the time came. Adora was the anchor; the final leg. The third leg entered the last twenty-five meters, slowing down significantly. She shouldn’t be slowing down, not yet! Catra screamed for her to go! go! go! The handoff was finally made, but her lead had been lost. As soon as the metal of the baton hit her palm, Adora took off. She had her target and was gaining on her significantly through the second turn. The B-Moon runner must have felt the heat because she started to speed up. After a second, Adora followed suit, moving her arms faster and lengthening her stride.
The last hundred meters was upon them. Adora was side by side with the girl, and they were hauling. Catra’s screams could barely be heard among the voices of everyone else. As they neared the finish line, it was clear who would win. Adora leaned over the line, then fell to the ground.
“And it looks like Frightview High School has won! Amazing performances from all of our athletes in these last two days.” The announcer’s voice came as a surprise, as they had been silent for the last three races. However, nobody cared, because this victory meant that FVHS were the state champions for the first time in school history.
Athletes from every school rushed the track. Hugs and congratulations were exchanged for every participant, but the biggest group had formed around the four-woman team that had carried them. Catra pushed her way through. “That was crazy!” she yelled, hugging her girlfriend. Adora laughed and fell into her arms.
“I know! I thought she had me for a second there.”
“No way! You totally had her that whole time.”
Officials attempted to usher people to the sidelines so that the boy’s 4x400m could begin. “Carry me!” Adora said as she flopped helplessly into Catra’s arms.
“Ew!” Catra squealed. “You’re all sweaty!”
The announcer continued. “We need the 4x4 teams for Valor, Bright Moon, and Frightview to please report to the podium.”
Adora kept walking with Catra, still petitioning to be carried. “You idiot, go stand up there!”
“Oh! Right.” Adora straightened up, fixed her ponytail, and put the baton into her sports bra strap. “Get some good pictures of me.”
To be fair, Catra got good pictures of everyone on that team…. because Adora stood in the center of them. The excitement became more intense as it was announced that Frightview was the state champion on the boy’s side as well. Even on the six hour bus ride home, screaming and singing was all there was. Adora, exhausted from her events, eventually dozed off with the trophy in her arms. Catra laughed at the sight of her cradling the trophy like a stuffed animal. She did not disturb her, however, just guided her girlfriend’s head to her own chest to be used as a pillow.

It was supposed to be 50m butterfly (and then 200m free i think) and he had the 5th best time for butterfly in the series and was set to be in the best finale session. So i checked the results and surprise he is NOT here, a dude from the second finale took his place and twitter doesn’t give infos, website doesn’t give infos.
Part of me thinks he knew he wouldn’t win and decided to preserve himself for 200m freestyle happening in 30 minutes BUT NOBODY IS SAYING ANYTHING AUSBSKSJ im already missing rugby tonight i cant do this rn
Shooot! That does make sense but it feels annoying right? We expected to see him on an event and he doesn’t show? :( he better bring IT for freestyle.

Kosuke Hagino's record is too amazingKosuke Hagino won bronze medal in the 400m individual medley at the 2012 London Olympics.Kosuke Hagino is the first high school student to participate in the Olympic Games in men's competitive swimming since Kosuke Kitajima at the Sydney Olympics, whom Kosuke Hagino respects. Then, in the long-awaited swimming competition at the London Olympics, he set a record of 1st place in the preliminaries and advanced to the finals. In the finals, he significantly improved his record and set a new Japanese record, beating Michael Phelps and coming in 3rd place. I did.

The records held by Ogino to date are as follows. He holds four Japanese records. 100m freestyle: 48.75 seconds (September 5, 2014)200m freestyle: 1 minute 45.23 seconds (September 21, 2014) Japanese record400m freestyle: 3 minutes 43.90 seconds (April 12, 2014) Japanese record1500m freestyle: 15 minutes 05.35 seconds (May 22, 2015)100m backstroke: 52.78 seconds (September 6, 2014)200m backstroke: 1 minute 54.23 seconds (April 13, 2014)100m butterfly: 52.11 seconds (June 22, 2014)200m butterfly: 1 minute 56.57 seconds (June 21, 2014)200m individual medley: 1 minute 55.07 seconds (April 9, 2016) Japanese record400m individual medley: 4:06.05 (August 6, 2016) Japanese record
However, since 2017, the Japanese record has not been broken and it has been in a slump.
Many people are curious about Kosuke Hagino's eyelids! What is its true identity?
Tumblr media
Kosuke Hagino has a very noticeable lump or protrusion on his eyelid, right? Honestly, it seems like a lot of people are concerned about it. Are athletes who use their eyes, especially competitive swimmers, undergoing surgery for eye diseases? When I did some research, I discovered something unexpected!Apparently, the protrusion on your eyelids is actually a callus caused by your goggles.
Tumblr media
I had to wear goggles all the time for practice, so when I put them on and take them off, they rubbed against me, and hard calluses formed on my eyelids. This means that it has nothing to do with illness or injury.
Is Kosuke Hagino's ex-girlfriend Yuko Oshima from AKB? Jurina Matsui?
Tumblr media
Is Yuko Oshima her girlfriend?Rumors about Kosuke Hagino's love life have frequently appeared and disappeared on the internet.
Up until now, there have been rumors of a love affair between the two, who are both main members of AKB! Apparently, the first member of the rumored group, Yuko Oshima, has graduated. Kosuke Hagino has publicly stated that he is a passionate supporter of Yuko Oshima.
Tumblr media
Former AKB48 member Yuko Oshima
Ogino professes to be a fan of Yuko Oshima After all, Yuko Oshima and Kosuke Hagino are also from Tochigi Prefecture, so if they could get tickets to a concert in Tochigi, they would definitely go, even if they had to skip practice! It seems that he was saying this to those around him. And, perhaps because they were able to secure live tickets, they were also seen participating in a live concert in Tochigi where Yuko Oshima came.
Tumblr media
It's difficult to get tickets for the live show, but it seems that he regularly goes to Yuko Oshima's handshake event, so it can be said that he is a very enthusiastic fan. Furthermore, it seems that one of the motivations when practicing swimming is that if you become successful and become famous as a swimmer, you will be able to meet AKB members someday! Unfortunately, or rather, I'm relieved, in the end, I wasn't in a relationship with Yuko Oshima.
Is Kosuke Hagino's ex-girlfriend Jurina Matsui?
However, in the case of SKE48's Jurina Matsui, who has been mentioned as the second rumored partner, there is footage of her getting even closer. What's more, it's a prank where Jurina Matsui asks Kosuke Hagino to bring her food to his mouth.
Tumblr media
The plan was to surprise Kosuke Hagino with a home-cooked meal prepared by Jurina Matsui on the athlete support program called "Honotai TV."
Due to the age difference between the two and the awkwardness and naiveté about love, it seemed like a romantic image, but since it was a TV project, it seems that the suspicion of a romantic relationship was just a rumor.
Kosuke Hagino's girlfriend is revealed to be miwa [height difference 28cm]In September 2018, Kosuke Hagino was first reported to be dating. My partner is singer-songwriter miwa. Kosuke Hagino's height is 177cm and miwa's height is 149cm, so there is a height difference of 28cm.
Tumblr media
Kosuke Hagino is in love with miwaKosuke Hagino and miwa met at work in October 2016.After that, they hit it off when they co-starred on TV in March 2017, and their romantic relationship began around September. It was revealed on the 8th that Kosuke Hagino (24), Bridgestone's gold medalist in the men's 400m individual medley at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and popular singer-songwriter miwa (28) are in a serious relationship. The two met at work in October of the year before last, and hit it off when they co-starred on TV last March. According to multiple sources, the two started dating in groups, including going out for meals with friends, and began a romantic relationship about a year ago.
Hagino-kun is not feeling well this season. On the other hand, Seto-kun is doing really well after having a girlfriend. Seto-kun's wife seems to be a really good cook.On the other hand, miwa. I can't shred it. Still living at home. Hey, Hagino-kun, are you okay? That's what I thought as a swimmer. pic.twitter.com/4XosDlyNxS— Akkuso (@akkuso38) September 8, 20Emiwa@yaneura_no_oto·to I felt happy that miwa was happy, and sad that miwa was taken away, but I found out that Hagino had posted a photo of her with her head cut off to match miwa's height, even though it was on her own Instagram, and I wanted to support her. My feelings won
Tumblr media
My prayer for miwa now is・I hope this relationship goes well.・I want you to take this opportunity to stop retiring.Quit living at home and master housework to the point where you can support Hagino's career as an athlete!— Kenken ~Next Hiroshima🎸~ (@miwa3839kenken) September 8, 2018
Kosuke Hagino's current situation ① Married to miwa and has a childOn September 1, 2019, Kosuke Hagino's girlfriend miwa announced that she is pregnant and will get married in the fall. It was announced on August 31st that Kosuke Hagino (25, Bridgestone), gold medalist in the men's 400m individual medley at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, will marry singer-songwriter Miwa (29). Hagino met miwa in October 2016, and they started dating seriously two years ago. Hagino took a break for about three months this spring due to a slump, but with miwa's dedicated support, he made a comeback. miwa is currently pregnant and scheduled to give birth this winter.
On January 2, 2020, Kosuke Hagino announced the birth of his first child. The child's gender and birth date have not been disclosed. The exact date of her marriage has also not been revealed. Last fall, Hagino married popular singer-songwriter miwa (29). He revealed that he had given birth to his first child last year, and said, ``There's something reassuring about having a child. It's made me want to work even harder.''
Kosuke Hagino's current situation ② Signs of revival?Kosuke Hagino has been in a slump since 2017, but recently there are signs of a comeback.
Kosuke Hagino makes a comeback ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, even his rivals congratulate him and say “welcome back” Kosuke Hagino won the second medley event at the Japan Championship last December (Jiji Press Photo)The postponement of the Olympics by one year from 2020 to 2021 has given some athletes some time to recover from their slump. Kosuke Hagino (26), gold medalist in the men's 400m individual medley at the Rio Olympics, has become a fish out of water during the coronavirus pandemic. His condition hasn't improved since the Rio Olympics, and there was talk of ``yips,'' which prevents him from moving his body as he would like during competitions. The representative for the Tokyo Olympics will be determined at the Japan Championships in April, but Hagino won the two medley events at the Japan Championships last December. Kyoko Iwasaki, gold medalist at the Barcelona Olympics, speaks.``Even before the Japan Championship, he participated in an international tournament, and it seems that the players he once competed with said, ``Welcome back!'' (lol). It's a big thing that he has become more positive emotionally. I can't compete against the world.''If the Tokyo Olympics had been held as scheduled, I don't think I would have been able to compete against the world.''
However, it seems that he has not yet recovered to the level where he can compete on the world stage. I have high hopes for the future.
summary- Kosuke Hagino's height is 177cm.Kosuke Hagino won a bronze medal in the men's 400m individual medley at the London Olympics and a gold medal in the men's 400m individual medley at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.・The protrusion above Kosuke Hagino's eyelids is an octopus caused by his goggles.・Kousuke Hagino is a big fan of former AKB48 member Yuko Oshima.- Kosuke Hagino married miwa and is currently living a happy married life.・Kosuke Hagino has been in a slump since 2017, and is currently not at the level to compete on the world stage.
How was it? The rumors about top athlete Kosuke Hagino were really nonsense. This is probably all caused by the psychology of fans wanting to know about the private lives and information of top athletes, who are often mysterious, and to put it simply, being a top athlete is really difficult. When you think about it, it's amazing that the reason your eyelids protrude is because of the friction caused by constantly putting on and taking off goggles. This will improve your ability. He is still young in terms of age, and I hope he continues to strive for even greater heights, aiming for a second or third consecutive Olympic gold medal. We are rooting for Kosuke Hagino from the bottom of his heart so that he can become a super athlete known as the world's Hagino, just like Phelps and Kosuke Kitajima, who he admired!

DAY 9 AT THE VILLAGE, DAY 4 OF THE GAMES:  WOMEN'S 200M FLY FINALS, MEN'S 1X400 FREE RELAY SEMIFINALS
After the air between the two of you cleared, Johnny’s drive for winning returned to him. You told him to spread his wings and so he did. Johnny’s long arms allowed him to soar through the water, barely coming up for breaths. His goal should’ve been to be first in the semifinals heat but that wasn’t the only thing on his mind. The faster he was out of the pool, the faster he could watch you swim, and the faster he could get to you. As the timer continued ticking, as the line on the screen showcased the Olympic Record he was about to beat, all Johnny Suh could think of was you.
The conversation between you two had a hint of something more. Your words and actions leaned towards returned feelings and a love much larger than this historical event.
You were his driving force. You were his motivation. You were the love of his whole entire life.
And with his title of being your number one supporter, Johnny kicked his legs harder than ever before to reach the touch-mat at the end of the pool.
As his head broke through the surface of the water, Johnny’s hands blindly reached for the lane divider. He pulled his body over it, legs straddling the hard plastic as he awaited the times and scores to be unveiled.
Johnny saw the time first: 3:26.78. Then the placement: first. And finally, the two capital letters: OR. Ripping his swim caps off his head, he yelled in victory and slapped the material against the water. Above him, Mark jumped into Jeno’s strong hold and Jaehyun shoved all three of their eggheads together in celebration. Wanting to join in on the festivities, Johnny hauled himself out of the pool and joined the three of them in their hug.
When the excitement of winning the semifinal heat wore off after taking some cool down laps, Johnny quickly grabbed his gear and a towel to dry himself off. With one of your coaches in the lead, they led him straight to the interview area where an eager sportscaster, Tiffany Hwang, waited. Johnny knew he should’ve participated in this interview as the last swimmer who solidified their spot in the finals but the Olympian had other priorities–your 200M Butterfly Final event was up next. Plus, there were three other eager athletes willing to take the microphone; he was sure Tiffany would understand.
As Jeno and Mark switched off feeding Tiffany answers, Johnny and Jaehyun stood with their bodies facing the closest screen, arms crossed over their bare and damp chests, waiting for your event to begin.
“Take your mark.” Beep. Off the buzzer and into the water you went.
Johnny refused to take his eyes off of you as you bobbed in and out of the water. His fingers were curled into his fists, nails digging into his palm as Johnny watched the rhythmic rise and fall of your perfect form. So into your laps, he almost felt like he was in the pool with you, right by your side cheering you on like he did all those years ago, when you first learned how to do your signature stroke. You used to struggle with synching your propelling dolphin kicks to the stroke of your arms. Johnny remembered how you refused to perform this stroke, calling it a method of torture to swimmers around the globe, and how you had grown since that lesson a long time ago.
His quiet cheers grew in volume as you made your final split, Johnny’s voice mixing in with Jaehyun’s as they yelled with a ferocity only competitive athletes could possess. Their spirit drew Jeno and Mark’s attention away from Tiffany’s questioning, the whole team of men now glued together to watch the last seconds of your swim. The anticipation bit at him as you and your rivals reached for the wall at the same time.
When your name claimed the top spot on the scoreboard, Johnny’s heart soared to the sky. His loud voice followed after, the only words leaving his pink lips were cheers of your name. There was an overwhelming rush of pride, one that was caught on camera, and he didn’t care who saw.
His best friend–his little Flipper–was now an Olympic Gold Medalist. Who wouldn’t rejoice over that brand new title?
Tiffany’s statement cut through the rambunctious rallies of your teammates, acting as a reminder that they were on live television. “It’s always nice to see athletes supporting one another and I’m glad we were able to capture this moment with you all. How do you feel seeing the first of your teammates win gold?”
Jaehyun nudged Johnny’s side, urging him to talk. The other three had done their time already, plus this was Flipper’s win, it was only right that he spoke.
Johnny broke out into the widest grin, heart thrashing in between his ribs. “It’s a dream she’s always wanted to achieve and as a fellow athlete and her”–he hesitated, not really knowing where they stood–“friend, I’m just glad I was able to witness this pivotal moment in her career. No questions asked, I’m extremely proud of her. She’s an inspiration to me and I’m sure to many others out there as well.” The words flowed out of him, the respect Johnny harbored for you coming through, and it was obvious how close the two of you were.
But those who truly knew Johnny–his teammates, the sportscaster that followed him throughout the entirety of his career, and his longtime coaches–could sense the deeper, hidden meaning behind his answer.
With a satisfied hum, Tiffany concluded the interview, “Well done to you and to your teammates, John. I hope to see you on the winner’s podium in the near future.”
As the group of four made their way back to the ready room, Jeno, Mark, and Jaehyun poked fun at Johnny’s replies.
“Dude, you are sooooooo in love with her. You’re so fucking whipped, man,” Mark said, giggling like a teenage girl. It was as if Johnny’s situation with you was more thrilling than participating in the Olympics themselves.
“It’s actually disgusting,” Jeno added swiftly. The youngest’s remark was met with a light chokehold that lasted the short walk behind camera focus. “I can’t breathe,” he struggled as Johnny’s arm tightened around his neck.
“You’re a swimmer, you’ll survive,” Johnny retorted, finally letting Jeno go.
Once in the room, Johnny settled in away from the crowd of athletes, taking up space in the back corner. He had the perfect view of the large flat screen TV that was currently projecting your face.
“Congratulations!” Tiffany's bubbly voice rang throughout the speakers. The room hushed to hear the interview. Johnny watched as the microphone was thrusted into your beautiful face. “How does it feel to now hold the title of Olympic Gold Medalist?”
“Oh my gosh, Tiffany, I honestly don’t think it’s hit me yet,” you blabbered out in between harbored breaths.
“Well, it’ll hit you during the ceremony, I’m sure,” she laughed. “Was there anything that was on your mind while you swam that last lap?”
Johnny watched with a smile on his lips as you paused, taking a sip of your cold bottled water to probably calm your heart rate. “I—uh, wow. Sorry, this is all just so crazy.” You were too precious to him in your post-swim haze.
“No, no. Take your time, you just hopped out of the pool!”
“I honestly do what I always do: pretend a shark’s after me.” Johnny let out a boisterous laugh, recalling all the times he played that game in the lanes with you. When the two of you were younger, Johnny would swim in the same lane as you, just barely behind your kicking feet. Your goal was to reach the other end of the pool before he caught you. At first, he let you off easy but as you grew stronger and swifter, it was harder to grab hold of you.
“Really?” Tiffany perked up.
Your nervous giggle charmed Johnny’s heart. “No—I just, sorry. Wanted to throw in a joke there, the nerves are just everywhere right now. I honestly thought of all the people I was swimming for.”
“Good answer. And speaking of those people—” Tiffany replied with her signature eye-smile. She motioned to the screen behind her that showed your family back home watching the interview via Zoom. “—is there anything you would like to say to your family back home or to any of your supporters watching?”
Johnny grinned as you happily greeted your grand support system. Their cheers and praises were drowned out by the lag of the online call but he felt the sentiment just the same. He was sure you did too. A small chuckle and a shake of the head followed as you cutely addressed your mother with a, “Hey look, ma, I made it!”
But the next few sentences you uttered made Johnny stop in his tracks and stare at the screen with his mouth agape.
“I can’t believe this is actually real and I hope I made you all proud. Umm—I don’t really know what to say right now, my mind is reeling but”—you gulped, the nervousness manifesting in the slight tremble of your voice—“to the person who told me to ‘fly high, butterfly,’ I did it for you. I love you.”
The three words repeated on a loop in his head as he processed exactly what happened. You said that you loved him on a live stream, for the whole entire world to see. His breath caught in his throat, heart fighting the barrier that kept it within. Johnny let out a laugh of disbelief, running his finger through his hair. Did that really just happen?
When he met Jaehyun’s unabashed grin that confirmed your actions, Johnny realized that he wasn’t dreaming.
God, how Johnny loved you. And that love was mutual, returned. An impossible dream came true and Johnny needed to make you his.
The minute you arrived, you were showered in endless praise. Athletes you knew well and some you had just met congratulated you on your achievement. And while you were in the limelight, Johnny stood back; after all, he was going to make sure to spend the rest of the night with you. He also stood back to calm down his nerves. Yes, feelings were returned and were in the open. But what now? This was a ginormous shift. Was he ready for it? Were you ready for it? He’d always seen you as home but with a change in dynamics, would that feeling of comfort remain?
Johnny took his time to take you in, fondly watching as your friends greeted you. Your voice was filled with joyful surprise as Mark jumped on your back, your arms immediately reaching behind to grab hold of his built body. The glee turned into a minuscule whine when Jeno squished your cheeks with his large palms. Johnny wasn’t able to hear the entire exchange between you and Jaehyun but his ears were so attuned to your voice, he picked up your last statement.
“I’m going. I’m going,” you said with a light chuckle. To Johnny, your voice was a siren’s song. No matter where it would lead him, Johnny would follow it.
As you approached him with careful steps and eyes aimed towards the ground, Johnny felt his heart running to reach its lifeline. If his heart had hands, they would extend them towards you, ready to take you in and never let you go. He felt the heaviness of your gaze as you worked your way up from his exposed form to his face. As much as Johnny wanted to bite back his smugness, a tiny smile that resembled a smirk revealed just how much he enjoyed you taking him all in. After all, it’s always nice to be admired and to be admired by the one and only you was the best feeling of all.
“Hey,” you said, holding up a hand in greeting.
Johnny read the tiny twitch in your brow, knowing that you were beating yourself up for that awkward conversation starter. Anything you did was so endearing to him, he just wanted to kiss that spot that moved in annoyance. He wanted to kiss you everywhere–to show you how much he truly cared for you–but he needed to wait a few minutes more. Words first. Actions later.
“Hey yourself, champ,” Johnny smiled fondly at you. The praise that poured out of his mouth was genuine. “Congratulations. You were amazing out there, sweetheart.”
Instead of taking the compliments in, you ignored them, your attention entirely focused on fiddling with the silver bracelet Johnny gave you years ago. He put an end to your nervous tick by taking your hand in his and intertwining your fingers together. He heard your breath hitch as he began to rub little circles onto your skin that was still freezing from the water. Johnny hoped that the warmth he exuded was enough to calm you down. “Why are you nervous, Flipper?”
“Because I feel like I did a stupid,” you replied, unraveling your fingers and grabbing his large palm. Your fingertips traced invisible shapes into his skin and Johnny was glad you still found comfort in his proximity.
Chuckling, the boy said, “I don’t think winning gold counts as a stupid, love.” Johnny would never grow tired of calling you his love.
“No, not that.”
Johnny knew you were just avoiding the topic at this point and although he was in love with you, it was still his job as your best friend to tease you. Pulling you closer, he asked with a playful tone, “Then what?”
“I confessed that I loved someone on live TV and I’m hoping he heard me so I don’t have to say it again,” you mumbled.
To reassure you, Johnny placed a warm hand on your hip. Having you in his arms was like heaven on earth, he cursed himself for waiting this long for the opportunity to love you wholeheartedly. Looking down at you with a sparkle that was reserved just for you, he said, “He heard you loud and clear but he would love to hear it again in person.”
“Johnny,” you whined. His heart clenched at the call of his name. “Must you really do this to me?”
“I’ve made it my life’s goal to tease you until the end of time, sweetheart,” Johnny teased, circling his arms around your waist. When you leaned into his touch, ear pressing against his rapidly beating heart, he swore to never let you out of his sight. Not when you sighed and relaxed against his form. Not when your eyes that were solely aimed at him held the universe and more in them.
You were everything to Johnny. In all phases of his life, you were a constant. All other things and people were just moving pieces he’d encountered throughout the years.
You were one of his first friends when he enrolled in swimming lessons. You were the one who pushed him to study when his grades slipped and he was on the verge of losing his athletic scholarships. The person he ran to when dealing with all sorts of heartbreaks throughout the years, just the mere vision of you made Johnny feel alright again. The face he searched for after swimming each and every event. Oblivious to his feelings before, he wanted to laugh at his cluelessness. Johnny had been in love with you since the beginning and it took him a stupid little challenge for him to realize it.
Challenges have always been you and Johnny’s thing but this one, although straying from its original motive, was probably the most memorable of them all.
And sure, transitioning from friends to lovers would be somewhat of a challenge to work through but Johnny Suh would willingly navigate through uncharted waters just to be with you. No distance nor form of competition could keep Johnny away from you–not after that stunt you pulled. It took a lot of courage for you to confess your feelings on a livestream–though you used a codename that a select few understood–it meant the entire world to him. But before Johnny could share you with the world, he still needed uninterrupted time with you for himself.
“You know, you’re absolutely infuriating at times—”
“So I’ve been told,” he laughed affectionately, his smile bursting at the seams.
“—but I can’t help but love you anyway.” And suddenly your grin, brighter than the lights in the Aquatic Center and shinier than the medals presented at the famed podium, was all Johnny saw. The words Johnny wanted to hear were said to him and only him.
Johnny loved you, he loved you, he loved you. There was only one way to fully encapsulate his overbearing love that took over his entire being, from his wet mop of a head all the way down to the toes tucked into his sponsored slides. Fuck all the people around them; Johnny was too in love to care. “Flipper?”
“Yes?” you replied, voice hopeful and breathless from the way Johnny said your name.
Johnny released you from his hold to grab the towel hanging off his shoulders. Grabbing both sides of the cloth with his hands, confidence surged through him as he warned you, “I’m going to kiss you now.”
Seconds after the towel slipped over your head and wrapped around your form, his body pressed against yours. Your shy expression was the last thing Johnny saw before channeling all his love for you into the kiss he pressed to your lips. Letting go of the towel that brought you two together, one palm clutched your side as the other cupped your flushed face in his large hand. His thumbs drew little, intimate circles into your exposed skin and it made you sink a little more into his hold. Johnny felt your hands dance their way up to his neck, fingers tugging gently at his damp hair, and sighed at your featherlight touch.
Even when you separated from him to catch your breath, Johnny’s eyes stayed closed to savor the moment. He bit his swollen lip to hide his smile but nothing could conceal his overwhelming happiness. “I love you,” he muttered into your lips before capturing them for one last act of adoration.
Johnny rested his forehead against yours and affectionately nuzzled his nose against yours.
“You just kissed yourself a gold medalist,” you laughed in disbelief, running your fingers through his locks to push the stray hairs that tickled his forehead. To him, you looked just like starlight.
Johnny leaned down to whisper in your ear. “Oh, trust me. I’m gonna do more than just that in a bit.”
“Is that so?” As you ran your hand across the sensitive part of his neck, Johnny shuttered. You were testing him and sucked air through his teeth to show how much that small action affected him. He pushed his hips into your front, using a strong calf as a hook to keep the two of you connected. He guessed by the slight wiggle of your body and almost-too-quiet to hear moaning, you felt just how eager Johnny was. The tight spandex you both wore were just thin boundaries; the friction between the material and your aching bodies made everything much more enticing.
“I wouldn’t lie about that, pretty girl.” Johnny’s head dipped to kiss your pulse point and his mouth remained on your weak spot. He could feel your pulse increase as he focused on the area.  The swimmer, always centered and determined, could have gone on leaving marks for minutes on end if you didn’t pull away. He groaned at the loss of contact but the words that escaped you ignited a fire within him–a flame so hot that could only be extinguished by you.
“Then if that’s the case, darling, do your worst.”

The First Winner of 200m Butterfly
The swimmer who won the first 200m Butterfly was labelled a ‘water risk’ (drowning risk) when he entered College when he was 16 in 1949. He was such a bad swimmer that he could not get out of the pool after attempting to swim. In 1949 his future as a swimmer was not bright. In fact I’m sure any of those who knew him would have put money down that he would never be a swimmer, never mind an Olympic…

Age is Just a Number: Mastering Swimming at Any Age
Endurance performance is often associated with youth, but as many master level swimmers are proving, age is indeed just a number. This post is dedicated to those swimmers who have passed the age of 35 and are still making waves, showcasing that with the right approach, training, and mindset, competitive swimming and progress is not just for the young.
Inspirational Stories: Age-Defying Swimmers
Take, for example, Dara Torres, who at the age of 41, not only qualified for the Olympics but also won three silver medals. Anthony Ervin, another remarkable athlete, made a stunning comeback to win gold in the 50m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympics at the age of 35 and continued to compete at a high level into his 40s. Nicholas Santos, at 42, won the men's 50m butterfly at the 2022 FINA World Short Course Championships, becoming the oldest swimmer to achieve this feat. Equally impressive is Gabrielle Rose, who at 46 secured a place in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Indianapolis, the same city where she made the Olympic team two decades earlier in 2000. Her participation marks her as the oldest swimmer in the Olympic Trials since at least 2004, if not in the entirety of modern swimming history. And let's not forget the incredible Japanese swimmer Tsutomu Nakano, who at 80, set a record in the 200m backstroke. These athletes shatter the age barrier, proving that with dedication, swimming performance can be maintained or even improved with age.
Training Focus: Strength, Power, and Speed
As we age, our physiological capabilities change, but this doesn't mean performance must decline. After 35, while VO2max and other factors may start to decrease, focusing on technique, strength and power in the pool and gym, can yield remarkable results, offsetting an age-related decline.
Strength and Power in the Gym
Strength training is crucial for master swimmers. It helps maintain muscle mass, increases power, and reduces the risk of injuries. Incorporating exercises like deadlifts, squats, and presses can significantly improve your swimming performance. Core strengthening exercises also play a vital role in maintaining good streamline and technique.
Speed in the Pool
Speed work in the pool is just as essential. This involves training sets at your goal pace, which helps your body adapt to the demands of racing. It's not just about swimming long; it's about swimming smart. Integrating interval training with periods of rest allows for high-intensity effort while managing fatigue.
Goal Pace Training
Training at your goal pace is a strategy that aligns your body and mind with the speed you aim to achieve in competition. This approach helps in building muscle memory and sustained power specific to your race pace. Regularly practicing at this pace will condition your body to maintain speed over the duration of your event.
Technique and Strategy: The Key to Success
As physical prowess faces new challenges, technique and strategy become increasingly important. Master swimmers often find that changing decades old habits or adapting to new technique styles challenging. However, refining their stroke technique can lead to significant improvements. This includes working on the smaller or overlooked details: starts, turns, finishes, race strategy, and stroke efficiency.
Video analysis is a powerful tool in this area. It allows swimmers to visually assess their technique and make adjustments in way that previously was not available two decades ago. Even small changes in stroke mechanics can lead to reduced resistance and increased propulsion.
Smarter Programming: Balancing Training and Recovery
Smart programming is about finding the right balance between training intensity, volume, and recovery. As recovery times may increase with age, it's essential to listen to your body and adjust your training accordingly. Incorporating active recovery sessions, like light swimming dynamic stretching, can aid in muscle repair, improve intensity for key sessions, and reduce the risk of overtraining.
Nutrition and Hydration
Nutrition and hydration play a pivotal role in a swimmer's performance at any age. A balanced diet rich in protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and micronutrients is essential for energy, muscle repair, and overall health. Staying hydrated is equally important, as even mild dehydration can impair performance. Creature comforts that become habitual over time, often contribute to calorie surpluses, and dehydration.
The Role of Community and Coaching
Being part of a swimming community or club can provide invaluable support. Training with peers offers motivation, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging. A good coach can also make a significant difference, providing guidance tailored to your age, abilities, and goals.
Mindset and Motivation
Maintaining a positive mindset and staying motivated are key components of success in master level swimming. Setting realistic goals, celebrating achievements, and enjoying the process are essential. Remember, swimming is not just about competing; it's about personal growth, health, and enjoying the water.
Conclusion
Master level swimming is not just about competing; it's a celebration of lifelong athletic lifestyle, a testament to the enduring spirit of the human body and mind. By focusing on strength and power in the gym, speed in the pool, and embracing smarter training strategies, swimmers of any age can achieve remarkable performance. Remember, in the water, age is not a barrier, but a badge of experience, resilience, and wisdom. Keep swimming, keep striving, and let the water be your timeless arena.
