As The Tide Turns

Ratings droopy? Need a vixen, stat? North Shore recruits Shannen Doherty–who says she's now "mellow".

It's 8 p.m., Shannen Doherty is in her Honolulu hotel, and the phone rings. It's a surfer pal with an invitation for the evening. "It's going to be a killer party on the North Shore," she promises.

And Doherty, the 33-year-old twice-divorced TV veteran and tabloid hell-cat, says..., uh, no, thanks. "I wasn't tempted," she insists. "Not even a pinch." Instead, she orders Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story on pay-per-view and jumps under the covers.

What exactly is going on here? Doherty, of course, has long been known for two things: nightime dramas (Beverly Hills 90210, Charmed) and a dramatic nightlife. Now she's taking another stab at the former, joining FOX's island-based soap North Shore as the troublemaking half sister of the show's goody-two-sandals (Brooke Burns). Off-camera, however, Doherty swears on the soul of Jason Priestley that what might be called The Shannen Doherty Show –the decade of headline-grabbing behavior that kept her steadily in the gossip columns– is on hiatus and may be –gasp!– gone forever. "I really have mellowed out," she says. "The pace has definitely slowed down in my life, which is good."

Granted, it would have been a very hard pace to keep up. Some highlights: She impulsively married Ashley Hamilton, son of tanmaster George, in 1993, only to divorce seven months later, and in 2002 she married Rick Salomon – yes, the guy who taped and costarred in that notorious Paris Hilton video – a union that lasted nine months. Famously temperamental, Doherty was fired from 90210 producer Aaron Spelling, who rehired her for Charmed, where she clashed with costar Alyssa Milano. Reportedly, Doherty tried to run down ex-fiancé Dean Factor with her car, later telling Movieline she intended no harm: "Look, I have good aim. If I really wanted to run him over, I wouldn't have missed." And just last February she got into anasty tiff in South Beach with Tara Reid.

All in the past, Doherty says now. "When I was younger, when I was getting married for the first time, I wasn't on the best behavior," she admits. "I had married the wrong person, and it wasn't working out. It was an incredibly destructive relationship, and [Hamilton] was a drug addict and I didn't know towards the end, when I left him." The stories in the press, she says, hurt: "It was like all the kindness in the world seemed to have left."

Doherty doesn't apologize for her past but says she has changed. "After a while you get so sick of going out, seeing the same people, doing the same thing," she says. "I have done all that, and it's not much fun anymore." As for men, "I know now that I won't run off and get married after two weeks–men are still on their best behavior at that point." Lately she has been dating Manhattan-based hotelier Jason Pomeranc, 33. "My taste has definitely improved, and I definitely won't be repeating the same personality types," says Doherty. That said, she adds, "I'm human. I still have the right to marry the wrong guys."

Regarding her newfound peace of mind, location probably helps. "How could anyone feel down here?" asks Doherty, who's living in Hawaii while North Shore tapes. She has taken up surfing and says she's often up at dawn for the cleanest and least crowded waves. "Whenever I get stressed, I go jump in the ocean. It purifies and cleanses me. It really does change you. It's like everything melts away." Out of the water, "if I encounter people with a bad attitude or bad energy, I don't let it seep into my own," says Doherty. "I know I sound like such a freak right now talking about all this energy stuff, but it's so true. You get back what you put in."

"I live by the beach, and my life is all about my dogs, my horses and my friends," says Doherty (in Oahu). "It forces you to look at the brighter side of things".

The North Shore casting would seem to provide an excellent opportunity to test her new resolve. In 2001 Doherty had a brief romance with her Charmed costar Julian McMahon–who at the time was married to, but said to be estranged from, Brooke Burns– who now costars with Doherty on North Shore. Doherty adamantly denies that she had anything to do with the couple's marital problems. "I come from a strong, moral Southern Baptist family," says Doherty, a Memphis native and–a rarity in young Hollywood–a diehard Republican. "For anybody to say that I could be a home wrecker is hurtful." The triangle, says Doherty, has not caused any bad blood on the Honolulu set. She and Burns "laugh together," she says. "She gave me tips on how not to show sweat stains when I'm shooting an outdoor scene wearing silk. Our relationship has been fine despite what people have tried to make it out to be. There have been no catfights."

That said, she know it will be hard to change the way some people think about her. So she tries to stick to her mother's advice. "My mom always says, 'One person at a time, Shannen.' So I always have that in my head. And you know what?" she asks. "When people meet me, they know who I am."

Satu peristiwa astronomi penting akan terjadi di tahun ini, akhir dari salah satu misi paling ambisius dan sukses manusia dalam mengeksplorasi alam semesta. Terutama untuk kawasan outer solar system, area setelah batas asteroid belt, 3.2-4.2 AU, atau antara 179.5 juta KM-329 juta KM dari Bumi. Subyek utama dari misi seharga 3.26 Milyar Dollar ini adalah Saturnus, planet cincin, untuk mengeksplorasi dan mengetahui lebih banyak tentangnya. Nama misi ini adalah diambil dari dua ilmuwan terkemuka.

Giovanni Domenico Cassini menemukan empat dari enam-puluh dua satelit alami Saturnus masing-masing Iapetus (Saturn VIII, 1671), Rhea (Saturn V, 1672), serta Tethys dan Dione (Saturn III & IV, 1684). Keempat satelit alami temuan Cassini dinamakan Sidera Lodoicea, namanya mirip-mirip dengan 4 satelit terbesar Jupiter karena sama-sama berasal dari bahasa Italia. Selain itu Cassini membuat pembagian untuk cincin Saturnus.

Christiaan Huygens adalah ilmuwan lengkap dari Belanda yang berprofesi sebagai ahli matematika, ilmuwan, astronomer, fisikawan, dan horologist. Warisan yang ditinggalkan Huygens antara lain jam pendulum dan penemuan satelit terbesar Saturnus, Titan, pada 1655 dengan menggunakan teleskop desainnya sendiri.

Pada 1997, dengan menggunakan roket Titan IVB/Centaur, NASA meluncurkan space probes yang dinamakan sesuai dua tokoh berpengaruh akan pengetahuan kita tentang Saturnus, Cassini-Huygens. Dikembangkan sejak 1980, space probes ini terdiri dari modul yang akan mengorbit planet itu sendiri, Cassini dan modul untuk mendarat di Titan, Huygens.

Di 1998, Cassini-Huygens melakukan flyby alias terbang untuk melakukan gravitational assist –memanfaatkan gravitasi sebuah planet untuk memberi efek ketapel- pada planet Venus. Dengan melakukan ini Cassini-Huygens mencapai kecepatan 7 km/detik. Setahun kemudian flyby kedua di Venus dan Bumi dilakukan, menambah kecepatannya sekitar 5.5 km/detik. Pada akhir 2000, Cassini-Huygens melewati Asteroid Belt.

Di tahun 2001, Cassini-Huygens melewati Jupiter dan tiga tahun kemudian, pada 2004, setelah 7 tahun perjalanan, sampai di Saturnus. Di bulan Januari 2005, Huygens mendarat di Titan. Umur Huygens memang tidak lama, dari memasuki gravitasi Titan selama 2 jam 27 menit, Huygens hanya bertahan 72 menit lebih lama. Tapi 72 menit itu cukup untuk membawa pengetahuan yang jauh lebih besar akan Titan. Sampai saat ini Huygens adalah satu-satunya momen manusia berhasil mendaratkan obyek di outer solar system.

Cassini terus mengorbit Saturnus selama 20 tahun terakhir, memberi pengetahuan yang sangat banyak tentang Saturnus termasuk cincin, atmosfir, gravitasi, dan satelitnya. Di bulan September 2017, Cassini akan mengakhiri tugasnya dengan menyelam ke atmosfir gas Saturnus untuk melindungi dunia seperti Titan dan Enceladus yang sangat mungkin memiliki kehidupan. Yah, karena sumber energi Cassini adalah 33 kg plutonium, cukup untuk membuat 5 milyar penduduk bumi terkena radiasi.

Cassini Probe

Jika kembali sedikit, aku pernah mengatakan bahwa Saturnus adalah Nanamin sementara Titan adalah Ranze. Dan ya pendapatku belum berubah. Nanamin adalah epitomi untuk berakhirnya misi Cassini, hanya saja lebih cepat 5 bulan dari yang asli. Nanamin akan pergi for good akhir bulan ini, tepatnya 20 Februari. Perpisahan yang layak untuknya adalah PB keduanya [2017], semoga bisa memberi kenangan indah untuk yang terakhir kali.

Namun fokus utama kali ini adalah Ranze, yang dalam Sakamichi Universe adalah satelit terbesar Saturnus, Titan. Jarang ada satelit yang sama populer dengan planet asalnya, dan Titan masuk kategori ini. Sebelum bernama Titan, satelit ini dinamakan Saturni Luna atau Saturn VI sebelum 1847. Dinamakan sesuai leluhur para dewa Olympian, nama ini sesuai untuk satelit terbesar kedua di Solar System. 50% lebih besar dari Bulan dan 80% lebih massive, Titan bahkan lebih besar dari Merkurius.

Titan adalah salah satu tempat paling mirip Bumi -selain Venus- sejauh yang kita tahu dengan topografi menarik dengan danau, laut, sungai, pegunungan, hamparan es, atmosfer methane yang tebal, dan tidak memiliki medan magnet serta temperatur -170° C, Titan adalah pojok menarik bagi para ilmuwan. Belum lagi aktivitas geologi seperti cryovolcanism, kecepatan angin, serta lautan bawah tanah.

Titan, diambil oleh Cassini-Huygens, masih banyak misteri yang dimilikinya

Satu alasan kenapa aku memilih Ranze sebagai Titan adalah karena dia sejak awal digadang-gadang sebagai the next big thing, bahkan sejak episode perkenalan Gen 2 di Nogidoko. Secara bercanda Bananaman menyebutnya campuran antara Ashurin dan Ikuchan, meskipun hype Ranze setelahnya tidak begitu mentereng. Dia selalu menjadi kandidat berikutnya dari Gen 2 yang merasakan senbatsu, meski akhirnya keduluan oleh Kiichan, Iori, dan Maichun. Sampai sejauh ini dia masih misterius, sama seperti Titan.

Jika diibaratkan, kita sebagai fans adalah Huygens yang memasuki atmosfer Titan untuk mempelajarinya lebih jauh. Kita selama ini hanya mengenal Ranze sebatas Nogiten, yang mana tidak selalu dipantau oleh sebagian besar fans, berbeda dengan Kojichuu atau Nogibingo yang adalah flagship, Nogiten dan atau saat Under menjadi guest di acara TV, feel yang didapat tidak sekuat seperti saat di dua show itu.

Puncaknya adalah tahun lalu, Ranze menjadi kandidat terkuat untuk merasakan senbatsu pertamanya sejak awal tahun. Sayang, momen graduate Maimai difokuskan untuk membawa kembali Miona, lebih sebagai simbologi penyerahan tongkat estafet. Di musim panas, Kiichan kembali ke senbatsu, di musim gugur, Maichun yang kembali.

Kompensasi untuk gagalnya Ranze ke senbatsu selama 2016 diantaranya adalah tampil di CM Pizza Huts bersama Naachan -pencapaian yang membanggakan sebagai Under-, center Under untuk pertama kali, mendapat spotlight dalam skala yang jauh lebih besar di paruh kedua 2016. Selain itu Under X-Mas 2016, dimana Ranze bisa dikatakan menjadi bintang utama.

Kini setelah Ranze akhirnya masuk senbatsu 17th single setelah menunggu sekian lama. Untuk pertama kali sejak Taiyou Knock, kita mendapat newcomer senbatsu, dan itu adalah Ranze yang sejak lama sudah mencapai level senbatsu, sama seperti SayuMari, Maichun, atau Kanarin. Dalam HS terakhir Sayonara no Imi, Ranze ada di peringkat 16, dengan catatan Sold Out pada ronde 6.

Sekarang tinggal menunggu apakah Ranze bisa memenuhi ekspektasi fandom. Sejauh yang bisa kulihat, Ranze bukan tipe yang ramai, melainkan sama seperti Ashurin, pendiam, somewhat has a strange vibe, dan terkadang terlihat awkward saat harus bersama member lain. Selain itu, dia punya kecenderungan M, cocok jika disandingkan dengan Ashurin, Little Miss S & Little Miss M?

Yang pasti, bagaimana Ranze akan menjalani hari-hari senbatsu akan layak ditunggu. Sejelek-jeleknya dia akan berada di senbatsu selama 3-4 bulan, dan privelege sebagai guest, solo photoshot, serta airtime lebih di Kojichuu sudah menjadi jaminan. Huygens memberi kita pengetahuan yang jauh lebih banyak mengenai Titan dalam 72 menit hidupnya. Ranze punya waktu berbulan-bulan, semoga tidak mengecewakan.
