Simple A-line, But So Much Work: McCalls 8645
This 1966 pattern illustrates the impact of the Youth Quake, the time when the large numbers of Baby Boomers dominated the marketplace and thus style of a great deal of goods. A cultural shift then emphasized that everything that was young was probably good, and everything that was not young was probably bad. The abandonment of sophisticated styles for women 30 and over was part of that shift which meant the loss of the draped dress. Instead, every woman, regardless of age, was supposed to wear what were called Young or Youthful styles.
You see such an example here in the A-line dresses which came with matching patterns for girls as well. The silhouette was certainly simple, and reminiscent of toddler’s dresses of the time, as were the look of the patch pockets, but this dress was anything but simple to make.
First of all, it was lined, as were the patch pockets which might be cut on the bias as you can see in the plaid version. The collar was also cut on the bias and one version, seen here in stripes, had a contrast collar with a bias-cut tie as well. The striped version also had gathered sleeves, a lapped facing to add cuffs, while the flower print had 3/4 sleeves with elbow darts and bias-cut cuffs. A zipper ran down the back.
Clearly, although the look was Young, a great deal of sewing knowledge was needed to pull it off. It was only in later years that the design and the sewing became more simplistic, and linings, bias elements, elbow darts, etc., were lost.

Reposted from @norman_parkinson We are very saddened to hear about the passing of Raquel Welch, an icon of glamour. Norman Parkinson was lucky enough to photograph her in 1967 for American Vogue’s August issue wearing a coat by Cooper Couture. It was this year that Raquel’s career blossomed internationally, filming in Spain for ‘Fathom’ and in England for ‘Bedazzled.’ 📸 by Norman Parkinson / Iconic Images #normanparkinson #iconicimages #raquelwelch #americanvogue #vogue #voguemagazine #coopercouture #fathom #bedazzled #1960sfashion #60sfashion #fashionphotography #vintagefashion #1960sphotography #60sphotography #vintagephotography #photographyhistory #portraitphotography #colourphotography #death #rip#eugenelacroix1 @eugenelacroix1 #photography https://www.instagram.com/p/Cow1F2JIC_4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🔹Jewel of a dress in striking amethyst cotton poplin, a wonderful fashion colour and outrageously flattering! Styled on simple lines with a gently moulded top and really full skirt with big, newsy pockets. 🔹Big, gentle peach pink flowers bed down on Everglaze schreinered cotton to make this sentimental beauty of a dress. A butterfly bow settles on the neckline, the billowy skirt springs out from a slightly dropped waistline. 🔹All of Paris shows in this stripey caramel/white beauty in crisp spun rayon. Beautiful big vee built into a cool, long torso top, flirty bow, full springy skirt — there's so much to fall in love with here! 💐🌻🏖️☀️ ("𝕁𝕠𝕙𝕟 𝔼𝕟𝕘𝕝𝕒𝕟𝕕" 𝕤𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕟𝕘-𝕤𝕦𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕣 𝟙𝟡𝟞𝟚) 🇬🇧 🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻🔺🔻 #50s #truevintage #1950s #60s #1960s #60sfashion #pinkdress #fashion #vintagedress #midcenturymodern #vintagefashion #vintageclothes #dress #1960sfashion #floralprint #vintagegirl #vintageaesthetic #vintageclothing #60sstyle #vintage #retro #midcentury #vintagelove #50sfashion #sixties #vintagestyle #mode #retrostyle #retrofashion #fashionphotography https://www.instagram.com/p/CfCHM5_jLqu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Vintage Black Patent Purse: Petite and Shiny
A friend is downsizing and giving away her large collection of vintage purses. and I was lucky enough to get a chance to take some. This petite purse has the high gloss of what we call patent leather even though it, like most of the accessories called patent leather now, is not actually made of leather but of some kind of synthetic. The term used to describe shoes and bags and such made of leather treated with a kind of varnish which rendered a high gloss. They are rare these days.
Although this is a petite bag, it makes the most of its size and offers a fair amount of space inside. I have learned you need to ponder a vintage bag from the side when closed in order to figure out how much it will hold without actually trying to fill it up. Most bags are far narrower at the top than at the bottom and then the folds which allow for that narrow top also take up space inside the bag. As a result, some vintage day bags won’t even hold a modern wallet with all its cards, if you are thinking of one for daywear. This one can hold a bit because it is so boxy, about as wide across as it is tall.
The handles are on little hinges and can be folded down or stand up.  An awful lots of little details as a result and you can see why a bag like this would have been cherished and kept. It may date to the 1960s when patent finishes made a kind of comeback in new synthetics.

I always thought Lucy looked stunning in this red dress. Here she wears it in 'The Lucy Show' Christmas episode "Lucy The Choirmaster" in 1965 and again that same year on 'Password' and in a few publicity photos. I don't recall seeing it again until the movie "Yours Mine & Ours" in 1968. #lucilleball #thelucyshow #yoursmineandours #reddress #lookinglovely #stunning #wardrobe #1960sfashion #vintageclothing #choirmaster #waynelvslcy https://www.instagram.com/p/CmTKXbosX3i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
