“HE BLEW HIS MIND OUT IN A CAR... HE DIDN’T NOTICE THAT THE LIGHTS HAD CHANGED”
TARA BROWNE [04.03.1945-18.12.1966]
“He looked like something that had fallen from the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel. He was like a king in his own terrain. He was miles ahead of his years. I’d never met anyone like him. He was completely unique.” - Glen Kidston, a friend of Tara’s
“He was this charming, very young-looking, rather frail-looking child. Very blonde, with big eyes and I think clad in something that put me in the mind of Little Lord Fauntleroy. And he was dancing in a very wild and deranged fashion. I’d never clapped eyes on him before and I thought, “Who is this strange flower that’s suddenly sprouted in the garden?” - Christopher Gibbs
“It was like a death knell sounding over London. I think it was a definite turning point for a lot of us. It was the end of the sixties for many people. To have someone who was so full of life and so full of joy suddenly taken from you, it made you very pessimistic and cynical about the world, which is what we'd all been trying so hard not to be.” - Marianne Faithfull

LECTURE 2 – THE WORLD THAT GAVE US THE BEATLES: Here is a splendid series of Movietone newsreel clips showing the excitement surrounding VE (Victory in Europe) Day, May 8, 1945. One of the scenes includes Winston Churchill’s powerful speech on the surrender of Germany. Great Britain played a key role and paid an enormous price – economically and in human lives – for its part in helping to bring about victory over the forces of fascist aggression. With the war over, Britons turned their collective attention to rebuilding and restoring their battered country.

I was minding my own business and analyzing another part of the A. Z. Fell & Co. bookshop from the Radio Times footage when I noticed something interesting on Aziraphale’s desk. It looks like the angel was studying a handwritten copy of someone’s last will and testament and left in a hurry, with a bronze medal and a fountain pen on top of it. And… an attachment of a land registry plan, barely visible underneath.
Obviously that’s when my South Downs obsessed brain turned all of its alarms on and decided to read the whole thing. And look for the missing parts, since only a portion of the original document was visible on screen. Unfortunately the full text is much longer and less exciting than anticipated, and — spoiler alert — related to a different area of the country, but still relevant to the Good Omens universe. We’ll look into that in a moment.
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the struck bronze medal — acting here as a paperweight, which makes the documents in question already stand out from the usual bumph and bric-a-brac accumulated by Aziraphale over an unknown period of time on his desk.
It’s a very interesting rendition of the mythological scene centered around Daedalus fastening the wings onto his son Icarus (little does he know that this attempt to escape imprisonment will lead to his son’s demise). Contrary to popular sentiment in the history of art, this particular version of Icarus isn’t depicted as a child or teenager, but as a warrior donning a helmet and preparing himself to battle. Which makes perfect sense after discovering that it was made for the Royal Air Force Athletic & Cross Country Association’s WAAF Athletic Championships in 1945. There’s some poetic irony in the fact that the medal was apparently given to the third place winner in a high jump category.
Apart from its obviously military style, this concept seems inspired by a 1885-86 medal by Auguste Patey commemorating the experimental flights at the first French wind tunnel at Chalais-Meudon, a town on the banks of the Seine near Paris. On 9 August 1884, engineers Charles Renard and Arthur Constantin Krebs made the first controllable free flight there when they piloted their airship, La France, over a course and returned to their starting point. From 9 August 1884 to 23 September 1885, La France made seven flights and was able to return to its starting point five times.

That was… certainly a lot of words. Let’s see if they mean anything! Turns out that this isn’t another John Gibson, rural postman and shoemaker from New Cumnock, Scotland, but a prominent historical figure with close familial connections to someone whose name you definitely know.
Josiah Wedgwood (12 July 1730 – 3 January 1795) was an English potter, entrepreneur and abolitionist. Founding the Wedgwood company in 1759, he developed improved pottery bodies by systematic experimentation, and was the leader in the industrialisation of the manufacture of European pottery. He is credited as a pioneer of modern marketing, specifically direct mail, money back guarantees, travelling salesmen, carrying pattern boxes for display, self-service, free delivery, buy one get one free, and illustrated catalogues.
As well as pretty, decorative vases and crockery with aesthetics and technology rooted in antiquity, Wedgwood put his designs to a more radical use. He was elected onto the Committee of the Abolition of the Slave Trade and designed an anti-slavery medallion which became the most famous image of a black person in all of 18th-century art. Covering the costs of distribution and production himself, Wedgwood ensured that it became a powerful symbol of public support.
Josiah was also a founder of the famous Darwin–Wedgwood family and the grandfather of Charles and Emma Darwin. It was the considerable inheritance Josiah left to his son, Josiah II, that enabled young Darwin’s survey voyage aboard HMS Beagle and, consequently, the development of his theory of evolution.
Okay, but what links the “Prince of Potters” to Aziraphale and his bookshop?
Tumblr media
In 1774 Josiah Wedgwood and his longtime business partner, Thomas Bentley, opened a new warehouse, enamelling rooms and most handsome showrooms at 12-13 Greek Street, Soho. In 1795, after Josiah’s death, the Wedgwood studio moved to 8 St. James’s Square and the buildings were later occupied by coachmakers, writers and other artists.
Now, through Word of God we already know that Aziraphale spent the 1600s using his personal savings to gradually buy out portions of the neighboring land in order to build the original bookshop “on Greek Street just off Old Compton”, which finally opened in its current form in 1800.
This means that for the time Josiah’s company operated in Soho, they were at least neighbors.

I can tell that it is the nearing the end of the study year for me because there is so much work to be done! I nearly feel like I am not going to get to it all, but somehow I manage. I may have to do certain things while on the way or back from dance, and I eat lunch while studying too. No wonder I am so tired of the evening and feel as if I need more breaks than usual. It is partially my own fault as some of these things are supplement, so I have added them on myself, but at the same time, I enjoy doing them, like watching the historical docuseries genre that I have been into for the WWII unit. Tomorrow, I will start one on the Cold War as I will be starting the Cold War unit very soon in World History. I get so much more detail this way, and they are primary sources since there are interviews from veterans and actual footage that was released.
In other news, I don't think I like combinatorics, and I am certain these permutation and combination problems with probability are easy compared to what higher level combinatorics looks like. The formulas are fine as I can calculate them without issue, but figuring out how to take apart the word problem to input it into the formula is where I keep getting discombobulated.
Tasks Completed:
Geometry - Learned about probability with permutations and combinations + practice + honors work
Lit and Comp II - Reviewed Unit 24 vocabulary + read Act 3 Scenes 2-3 of Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare + read modern translation of same scenes + wrote a diary entry for one of the characters (I went with one of the Watchmen) + worked on my literary analysis for Emma (due Friday)
Spanish 2 - Reviewed vocabulary + watched lecture video on demonstrative adjectives + practice activity
Bible I - Read 1 Samuel 18-19
World History - Read about the Marshall Plan and MacArthur's Plan for Japan + watched "The United Nations: History and Functions" + answered more WWII review questions
Biology with Lab - Read about vaccine basis + read about how to make different types of vaccines with examples
Foundations - Read more on thriftiness + completed next quiz on Read Theory + watched video on writing introductions for a speech + watched a video on introductions for persuasive speeches + watched a video on writing the conclusion to a persuasive speech
Piano - 60-minute piano lesson + practiced for one hour
Khan Academy - None today
CLEP - Completed Module 12 reading “Europe: 1945 to Present" 14.1-14.2
Streaming - Watched Greatest Events of World War II in Color episode 10
Duolingo - Studied for 15 minutes (Spanish, French, Chinese) + completed daily quests
Reading - Read pages 223-259 of Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
Chores - Laundry
Activities of the Day:
Personal Bible Study (2 Timothy 1)
Ballet

Journal/Mindfulness
What I’m Grateful for Today:
I am grateful for candy! I certainly do not have it all the time because of all of the sugar (and my parents would not let me do that even if I wanted to), I do let myself enjoy a serving when I want something very sweet!

Youre Part Of The Secret Squadron- Or Are You? Were Henry and Patty Actually Captain Midnight Fans? Is 7 Year Old “Henry” Brenner?
So, I talked in this post about some of the stuff re: the idea of Patty and Henry and Brenner somehow being mentally connected (and I also currently have another drafts in the works about it).
And now, I want to talk about Captain Midnight.
So, Captain Midnight’s story came in many forms, including the original radio show, a tv show, and a series of comic books.
And as we know, in TFS, Henry and Patty are both fans of Captain Midnight/they’re both “part of the Secret Squadron”.
However, their interest in Captain Midnight struck me as a bit odd- even though Patty asks Henry if he’s a “bit old” for Captain Midnight, I’m actually thinking that Henry and Patty might be a bit too young.
Why?
Well, the original Captain Midnight radio show only ran from 1938 to 1949. Whereas TFS Henry and Patty are 14, meaning they were born in 1945, making them 4 years old when the radio show ended.
And the TV show ran from 1954-1956, which IS more feasible for Henry and Patty but still a little odd.
And finally, the comic book series ran from 1942 to 1948- and Patty and Henry seem to be big comic fans based on their conversation about other comics + based on that opening scene of Mr Newby confiscating Patty’s comic- and while yes, the comics wouldve still existed in 1948, their run was over when Henry and Patty wouldve been 3 years old, so it’s not like it was a currently running comic series during TFS/it wouldnt have even been currently running when they were old enough to read.
And while it’s not at all out of the question for them to have been Captain Midnight fans, it’s just something that struck me as a little weird- Captain Midnight was a just little before their time. Especially since in-show Henry is never shown with anything related to Captain Midnight- there were lots of opportunities to give him a Captain Midnight comic, or to show him drawing Captain Midnight during that scene where he’s drawing with his crayons in the living room etc, but they never referenced it at all.
This also brings me to 7 year old Henry- we see him open up his Captain Midnight Spyglass on his birthday, and we see him do the Captain Midnight Salute:
Tumblr media
However, like I’ve mentioned before, that little guy doesn’t look like Henry- his hair is DARK brown instead of blonde:
Tumblr media
But he DOES look quite a lot like Brenner- the dark brown hair and the blue eyes, just like Brenner.
Especially when we look at 15 year old Brenner- look at 7 year old “Henry’s” hair, it’s slicked over in the same way that 15 year old Brenner’s hair is:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND, they specifically showed footage of 7 year old Henry’s birthday- and they ALSO brought up Brenner’s birthday, his 15th birthday was the same day that Brenner Sr embarked on Project Rainbow.
AND, I talked in this post about all of the stuff in TFS that conflates Brenner and Henry.
AND, jumping back to Captain Midnight, Brenner being a Captain Midnight fan makes way more sense because a.) Brenner wouldve been born in 1929 and 15 in 1944, making him the perfect age for him to have grown up at the peak of Captain Midnight’s popularity, and b.) Captain Midnight was a WW1 pilot, and Brenner Sr was also involved in WW1 in addition to being involved in WW2 by the time TFS rolls around.
Brenner is the PERFECT candidate for being a Captain Midnight fan. And I’ve been wondering if that 7 year old “Henry” is actually 7 year old Brenner.
And considering all of that PLUS what I mentioned in the beginning of this post re: Brenner and Patty, and considering all of the simulation stuff with TFS and the fact that NINA involves memories, PLUS the fact that when I brought all this up on discord, James mentioned all this vs the fact that El seems to have possibly have some of Brenner’s memories in NINA, as during that scene where El runs down the hallway, there’s SO many similarities re: Brenner’s shots vs El’s shots.
Plus what I’ve been working on re: the moving dead bodies analysis + the fact that multiple of the closeup shots that El supposedly saw of the bodies are the same shots that Brenner saw:
Tumblr media
Considering all of this, I’m wondering if Patty and Henry are Captain Midnight fans because Brennner’s memories re: Captain Midnight (and other memories) somehow ended up in their brains, especially considering the talk about how Henry and Patty are “connected,” versus Brenner constantly telling Henry to “connect”:
Tumblr media
Brenner, were you the real Captain Midnight fan? Are Patty and Henry connected to Brenner’s brain somehow?

hay just wanted to say I know things are stressful trust me I know ( I have a friend who lives with her family in Ukraine) I know life seams impossibly hard right now but keep going you will survive one day the world will see that Israel was In the right and hamas was in the wrong just keep on going until then
Awwww, Nonnie! Thank you so much for the kind words! They mean a lot!
Amen to this, hopefully one day the world will indeed be able to look back on this with more moral clarity than some are capable of right now. A bit like how I would like to believe there's less Holocaust denial today in Germany, than in 1945, when Germans were required by the allies to go through "de-Nazification" (meaning, register that they came to a cinema theater and watched footage of the horrors from the Nazi concentration camps), but many would register, walk into the cinema theater, and then sit with their backs to the screen the entire time the footage was shown. Today, I believe most Germans would not deny the Holocaust, and I personally know several who take a really strong stance against antisemitism.
That said, I also came across at least one anti-Israel German woman, who kept talking about the "mystification of the Holocaust," and how the Holocaust doesn't deserve the special recognition it has gotten, at the same time as trying to claim that what Israel is doing is a second Holocaust. I got the sense that she has an issue with facing Germany's past, and (to paraphrase the words of Israeli psychiatrist Zvi Recks), she will never forgive the Jews for the Holocaust. So, if she has to vilify the Jewish state to falsely minimize the crime of the Holocaust, and turn the Jews from victims to villains, she'll just have to do that...
I do believe that she's a minority in her country, and that in the same way, eventually people will look back at the most successful normalization of antisemitism since the Holocaust, with the same kind of denouncement, as we today look at the Nazis' antisemitic de-humanization of Jews, which preceded and enabled the Holocaust.
Thank you again for the kindness, and I hope that you, your friend, and her family, are all well, and will continue to be so! Sending much love and support! xoxox

For the last few months, people around the world have been closely following the ongoing brutality of the war in Gaza. Pictures of Palestinians fleeing south and looking for relatives under the rubble, videos of children searching for food and water — these and more have been circulating on social media and news networks every day since October 7.
But these images are practically nowhere to be found in the Israeli media. Most Israeli news outlets rarely even update the number of Palestinian casualties — which has surpassed 30,000 — nor do they inform their viewers that approximately 70 percent of the victims of the Israeli offensive are women and children.
The meta-narrative presented by the Israeli media defines Hamas’ attack on southern Israel as the genesis and the heart of the current geopolitical crisis. Every day there is a new angle on the events of October 7: new footage of the Hamas raids on the kibbutzim, testimonies of soldiers who participated in the battles, or interviews with survivors. Moreover, Israeli journalists cover current events in Gaza almost entirely through the single lens of October 7 and its ripple effects.
This is a conscious decision by the Israeli media. In an interview for TheNew Yorker, Ilana Dayan, one of Israel’s most highly-regarded journalists, explained, “We interview people about October 7 — we are stuck on October 7.” Oren Persico, a staff writer at The Seventh Eye, an independent investigative magazine focused on freedom of speech in Israel, told +972, “There is a cycle where the news outlets refrain from confronting the public with the uncomfortable truth, and as a result, the public does not ask for it.”
This cycle is understandable, to a certain extent. The October 7 attack was perhaps the greatest calamity in Israel’s history. On the deadliest day for the Jewish people since 1945, more than 1,200 Israelis were killed, and 243 were taken as hostages to Gaza, most of them civilians. For the first time in the state’s history, an enemy temporarily conquered Israeli-controlled territory. Jewish Israelis are continuing to process this national trauma and have, as a result, yet to regain their sense of security. News outlets, therefore, not only feed the public with a particular narrative but also objectively reflect the public sentiment.
Still, in the past five months, the Israeli media has done much more than merely reflect Israeli society back to itself. The media, and TV news in particular, has taken active steps to position itself as the embodiment of Israeli patriotism. It is defining what is in the public interest, drawing the boundaries of legitimate political discourse, and presenting only a certain truth to Israeli citizens. This position serves both their own commercial interests and the national interests stated by the government and the military. In so doing, TV news broadcasts are constantly walking a thin line between propaganda and journalism.
To understand why the Israeli media covers the Gaza war in this fashion, it is crucial to comprehend the historical trends in the media and its role in shifting Israeli public opinion to the right. The media became an indelible part of a cycle in which Israelis become increasingly nationalistic and militaristic, which makes them hungry for news that celebrates the war and obscures or even omits coverage of its costs. The public receives only this celebratory narrative, and the cycle continues.
To unpack this reality, the following analysis focuses primarily on TV news — which is the predominant medium through which Israelis consume news. But the same pattern is manifested in all other forms of media, making the cycle pervasive.
Transforming the media landscape
Until the 2000s, mainstream TV news was considered a stronghold of the secular liberal Zionist elite. This elite controlled the government-funded public broadcasts, which had monopoly on broadcasting until the 1990s, and then later privately owned Channel 12 and Channel 13.
All of these channels generally targeted a centrist, mainstream audience, and generally speaking, they rarely challenged the Israeli occupation, the settler movement, or the wrongdoings of security forces. They had much stronger teeth when reporting on other liberal issues like government corruption, gender equality, and in recent years LGBTQ+ rights. Similar attitudes existed in written media, with the notable exception of the left-wing newspaper Haaretz, which publishes more rigorous journalism about Palestinian issues. Yet it is worth noting that despite the high name recognition that Haaretz enjoys abroad, it has a relatively small Israeli audience — roughly 5 percent of local newspaper readers.
In the past two decades the news scene in Israel has undergone tectonic shifts. It has transformed from a largely centrist institution into a polarized field: one pole is an overtly right-wing machine, and the other is apologetically centrist, fearing to be perceived as too leftist.
Since Benjamin Netanyahu’s first term as prime minister in the late 1990s, he has been a fierce critic of mainstream media, calling it a far-left and untrustworthy source of information. (This obsession with the media underlies the corruption charges he is facing, all of which relate to his attempts to influence Israeli media to obtain flattering coverage.) After his first ouster, in the 1999 elections, Netanyahu determined that reshaping Israeli media was imperative in order for him to return to power.
He accomplished this goal by creating an independent amplifier for himself and his views that bypassed mainstream media outlets. In 2007, Netanyahu allegedly convinced Sheldon Adelson to establish the free daily newspaper, Israel Hayom, which gradually became the most widely-read newspaper in Israel. Until Adelson’s death a few years ago and subsequent changes to its editorial staff, the paper was unfailingly sympathetic to Netanyahu.
The prime minister has also been keen to reshape the TV news ecosystem because of its consequential role in influencing public sentiment. Under the control of his Likud party, the Ministry of Communications promoted regulatory changes that allowed Channel 14 to transform itself from a “heritage channel” (licensed to broadcast programs about Judaism) to a full-blown news channel providing hours of coverage a day, making it an Israeli version of Fox News. Amid the political polarization over Netanyahu and the judicial overhaul, Channel 14’s popularity grew, especially among Netanyahu supporters, making it second only to Channel 12 in viewership.
These structural changes coincided with a change in the composition of journalists in Israel. As Israeli society has become more right wing over the past 20 years, especially on the Palestinian issue, there has also been an increasing number of journalists who are right-wing religious Zionists, many of them settlers.
Persico, of The Seventh Eye, said that these changes “create two parallel universes with parallel fundamental presumptions, divided between Bibist and just-not-Bibist.” But even on mainstream channels, he continued, “inciting statements that were once heard only in religious Zionist synagogues’ weekly pamphlets can now be heard by prominent editors and journalists.” For example, on Channel 12, only some correspondents and guests advocate for reestablishing settlements in Gaza, whereas on Channel 14, they do so more explicitly and extensively.
Embracing propaganda
After the 2014 Gaza War — in which 68 Israelis and over 2,200 Palestinians were killed — Dana Weiss, a leading correspondent for Channel 12, lamented that one of the lessons from the coverage of the war is that Israeli media should do more to highlight the voices of Palestinians in the Strip. “The inclination of Israelis to listen to the hard questions is fading away,” she warned.
But in the nationalist climate created in the aftermath of October 7, coverage of the devastation Israel is unleashing in Gaza is nowhere to be found. Some journalists even cast doubt on whether the media should publish stories that might damage national morale.
From the very beginning of the war, TV news channels have spearheaded the hasbara effort in Israel. Hasbara — which means “explaining” in Hebrew — is used to describe pro-Israel advocacy, but is essentially doublespeak for propaganda. Elements of hasbara appear in every TV news channel. For example, since October 7, each channel’s logo has been modified to now include the Israeli flag and the government slogan “Yachad Nenatzeach” (“Together we shall win”).
As part of this hasbara, all mainstream news networks portray Israel as the ultimate victim, and the Hamas attacks as having demonstrated unparalleled brutality. This victimhood is an exclusive status: it leaves little to no room for the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, nor the level of the humanitarian crisis they are facing. Israeli mainstream TV news rarely shows any documentation of the rubble in Gaza or the magnitude of displacement and destruction there. When it does, the responsibility for these losses is laid at Hamas’ feet.
Anyone who challenges this narrative is targeted. For example, when UN Secretary-General António Guterres explicitly condemned Hamas’ October 7 attack but said that it “did not happen in a vacuum” — referring to Israel’s 56-year-long occupation as crucial context — the Israeli media pounced.
Instead of providing an honest explanation of his internationally mainstream position, Israeli journalists competed with one another to most harshly criticize Guterres. Almog Boker, one of the most popular correspondents on Channel 13, claimed that the UN chief was “justifying Hamas’ atrocities.” A headline in Ynet read, “Why Does the UN Secretary-General António Guterres Dislike Israel So Much?” Even Channel 12 described his statements as “outrageous.”
The army is the source
The close interaction between the Israeli media and the military, unsurprisingly, creates several critical blind spots in covering the reality in Gaza. The presence of international media was practically non-existent for the first weeks of the war, and most international journalists left Gaza for their own safety. The Israeli bombardment, and the intermittent electricity and communications blackouts, have hindered the ability of local Palestinian journalists to report.
As the ground invasion progressed, the Israeli army allowed some journalists — both Israeli and international — to enter Gaza, but only if they were accompanied by the military. Such tours are usually directed by the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, meaning the journalists are unable to interview Palestinians directly or to independently access ruined sites. They can see merely what is presented to them.
The military’s influence goes far beyond controlling access to information. For the first three months of the war, the head of the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, Daniel Hagari, conducted daily press conferences that were broadcast live on every channel during primetime. These press conferences included updates on the state of the war, but only sporadically contained instructions for the public or genuinely newsworthy information. Although Hagari was broadly viewed by the Israeli public as a reliable source of information, especially relative to the lack of public trust in the government, his unnecessary but constant presence gave the army control over the narrative in the news.
Furthermore, military correspondents, who largely rely on the Israeli army as their main source, are constantly praising the military. This is not a new trend. Even before the war, military correspondents often published IDF statements verbatim, and without mentioning that the military was the sole source of information. They also fiercely amplify the supposed successes Israeli forces have made in Gaza and advocate for continuing the operation.
The same is true of many other journalists and the media establishment as a whole. This is in part a byproduct of receiving their journalistic education through the Israeli military itself. The standard training for many journalists in Israel is at Galatz, the Israeli army radio, not at universities or local newspapers. Indeed, Galatz selects dozens of newly-conscripted Israeli soldiers to work at the station as part of their mandatory service. These soldiers receive unparalleled and highly-valued training and experience, which makes them particularly appealing for later occupational recruitment when they finish their service.
Persico emphasized the importance of this background, arguing that “generations of Israeli journalists were raised [professionally] under this military supervision, which trained them to think that there are things they cannot publish.” As a result, this education has over time shattered the fundamental conception of journalistic independence in Israel.
Pushing false narratives, dehumanizing Palestinians
In addition to omitting crucial coverage of Palestinian lives, Israeli media also plays an active role in creating outright false perceptions of the war and Palestinian public opinion.
A major difference between international and Israeli coverage of the war, for example, is the issue of Hamas’ legitimacy among Palestinians, which has become a recurring fixation of the mainstream media in Israel. There is certainly criticism of Hamas among Gazans for failing to guarantee security or to provide humanitarian assistance during the war. But the Israeli media portrays Hamas as on the cusp of losing all its standing among Palestinians.
On Channel 12, Ohad Hemo and Ehud Yaari, the leading Arab and Palestinian affairs correspondents in Israel, reported that tensionsbetween Gazan civilians and Hamas are intensifying. According to them, Gazans have said that “instead of ‘hello,’ the most common phrase on the street between people is ‘may God take revenge against Hamas.”
A few weeks ago, Israeli TV channels circulated a clip of thousands of Palestinians fleeing Khan Younis through a humanitarian corridor chanting, “The people want to take down Hamas.” None of them mentioned, as revealed by +972, that they were forced to do so by Israeli soldiers in order to be let through. Even if the media was unaware of this, any decent journalist should have questioned the chanting’s significance as an indicator of Hamas’ legitimacy, especially given that the videos were taken by soldiers and that the Palestinians were at the mercy of the Israeli military.
The narrative of Hamas’ supposedly imminent collapse was reinforced by other footage, such as videos of Palestinians in northern Gaza surrendering their weapons to Israel. Initially, news channels quickly amplified that “hundreds of Hamas militants are surrendering in northern Gaza.” A few days later, however, national security officials estimated that out of those hundreds, only 10 to 15 percent were actually Hamas militants. The rest were ordinary civilians who had not fled south, as the army had ordered them to.
Another example is the notion that the Israeli military is closing in on Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas’ Gaza branch and one of the masterminds behind the October 7 attack. These types of pieces have been running for months now. In December, in a video that sparked much mockery, Adva Dadon, a journalist with Channel 12, aired a story titled “In the house of Sinwar,” documenting an Israeli raid on what was said to be one of his homes. She even lifted a pair of shoes from the rubble and claimed it belonged to Sinwar — a statement that was quickly debunked.
Most disturbingly, Israeli TV news takes an active role in dehumanizing Palestinians. Channel 14 has consistently promoted abominable views — such as calling for the annihilation of Gaza, and describing all Gazans as terrorists and legitimate targets — which are parroted by leading anchors and correspondents. Because of these recurring statements, Channel 14 was even cited several times in South Africa’s complaint to the International Court of Justice that accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. These types of statements are not the exception, and in fact appeared on mainstream TV news as well.
Moreover, mainstream news refuses to report the number of Palestinian casualties, claiming that the numbers of the “Hamas-run” Health Ministry cannot be trusted — even though they were historically accurate and the Israeli army itself relies on them. Channel 14 used the numbers released by the Health Ministry, but defined all the thousands of Palestinians killed as “terrorists.”
Government talking points
To some extent, the undercurrents we see in Israeli media coverage of the war also appear on social media — a central method of news consumption, especially among the younger population. On social media, algorithms are designed to create an echo chamber with a parallel universe, and its personalized nature exacerbates the isolation of Israelis both from each other and from the rest of the world. For instance, even when Israelis on social media are exposed to non-Israeli coverage of the war, it would likely be through pro-Israeli mediating agents explaining it is merely enemy propaganda.
Israeli mainstream media creates another echo chamber for Israelis that amplifies government talking points and bears little resemblance to the information landscape of the rest of the world. Unlike Israeli news, international media is currently much more focused on the magnitude of the devastation in Gaza and its connection to the long-term oppression of the Palestinians. At the same time, there is much doubt globally if Israel’s war objectives are even feasible — but this doubt is hardly aired in Israel.
Thus, while Israeli TV channels have not been forced to boost the government’s line of thought, doing so has certainly served their own interests in maintaining high ratings. This strategy worked: a Hebrew University poll found that since the beginning of the war, mainstream media news consumption has more than doubled, and exposure to all major news networks has increased. Among the Jewish population, the popularity of Channel 12 has skyrocketed, especially among viewers affiliated with the anti-Netanyahu bloc.
These shifts are not a deviation from the norm. They are the apex of historical transformations that have fundamentally changed Israeli media and TV news, combined with outlets’ ad-hoc decision to display and prove their patriotism. Unfortunately, if coverage of the Gaza war is any indication, these trends are likely to continue, aggravating the ever-propelled cycle that pushes the Israeli media and the Israeli public to be more right-wing, conformist, militaristic, and nationalistic.

Watching a documentary with real footage of what happened in the concentration camps during world war II and then turning on current news is just so massively baffling.
I will sit here and watch how these innocent people got slaughtered and brutalized, knowing that they were victims of ethnic cleansing and genocide in 1945 and how they were saved by what would become the United Nations and ultimately the state of Israel, providing them with a base and home to be in..
Only to turn on the news and be slapped in the face with the reality of Israel, as a government, doing the exact same thing, only differently to disguise it, to Palestinians. The people who welcomed them into their country when they needed it most.
Even in the documentary I just watched about the Holocaust, they spoke about how Palestine was the only hope for the remaining jewish population within Europe after World War II; how Palestine was the actual only country truly opening their doors for them to come settle there.
And now I'm watching this on the news. This atrocity.
Another genocide.
With the roots in the exact same things that we so fiercely battled in the 1940's.
Ethnic cleansing.
Ethnic cleansing is never okay. You're not excused just because your race went through something that terrible – you should actually be the first people to stop it and speak up about it, because you literally went through it???
I don't believe in religion. I am not a religious person. I believe that religion is the basis of all the conflicts that happen in the world because of the fact that it is so differentiating, depending on what you believe in.
But I still believe in the right to be religious. I still believe in the right to believe in religion.
I just wish religious people could adapt that same mindset. I know a lot of religious people do; I have seen jewish people all over the world, proudly chanting that this is not what they stand for or believe in.
But yet religion is at the root of so many people suffering, just as it is the root of so many people finding hope.
It feels like a never ending battle – like a discussion we could have until the end of time.
Because there are good people everywhere. There were good people in Germany in 1945. There are good people in Palestine. And there are good people in Israel.
And yet the world is being torn apart because of some book written before even any of our ancestors lived.
I condemn the idea that we slaughter our fellow humans because of books written before we could even tell time or had truly spent time looking at the sky.
And yet here we are. Fighting wars because of those books.
Yet. Again.

Pitch for a Supermassive Games storyline:
1) The Title
RADIOACTIVE
2) The Prologue
1945, Los Alamos, New Mexico. The Trinity test is a success, resulting in the creation of the first atom bomb. However, a few months later, Dr. Carl McGregor (the red herring protagonist) is called to Los Alamos to investigate a mysterious set of events plaguing the area. Reports of people going missing and residents going crazy have the Pentagon spooked.
One night, Dr. McGregor and his staff are attacked by mysterious shadowy figures. Despite Dr. McGregor’s attempts to flee, he is eventually cut down by what appears to be a “glowing” creature.
(Basically, the villain of this game is some kind of creature that was mutated by the nuclear testing. So, a riff/homage to Godzilla. However, instead of creating kaijus, the monster is much smaller and comparable to the wendigos in “Until Dawn” and the werewolves of “The Quarry”)
3) The Main Story
In the present day, we follow the Proudstar family who live on the G. A. Romero Reservation, which is a few miles away from Los Alamos. The area has become the center of ghost stories due to people still going missing. Of the ghost stories, the most infamous one is that people are being kidnapped by “the skinwalkers”, who in Navajo culture are witches that have the ability to turn into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal.
(Obviously, the skinwalkers are the radioactive creatures from the prologue. The introduction of the skinwalker legend is meant to be a misdirection)
The Proudstars, who run the local market, have to frequently deal with tourists who want to see “the skinwalkers”. The Proudstars usually dismiss these tourists, especially since a great deal of them tend to be obnoxious (and borderline racist/ignorant). The family, although they’re aware of the legends, aren’t too concerned since they haven’t encountered the supposed skinwalkers.
Around this time, two groups of outsiders arrive at the reservation. The first is a group of ghost hunters who are trying to capture footage of the skinwalkers. The second is a group of ruthless gangmembers that take the Proudstar family hostage.
The first 4 chapters focus on the Proudstars dealing with the gangmembers. Simultaneously, the ghost hunters encounter a “skin-walker”, which turns out to be one of the radioactive creatures from the prologue. The ghost hunters flee the radioactive monsters and make their way to the Proudstar market, putting them in the middle of the hostage situation. They also unintentionally bring the monsters to the market, thus leading into the 2nd half.
The remaining 6 chapters focuses on the Proudstars, the gangmembers, and the ghost hunters trying to work together as a team to survive the radioactive monsters (the fake skinwalkers). Similar to “House of Ashes”, either the groups can put their differences aside or tear each apart. Depending on your choices, either everyone makes it out alive…or everyone ends up meeting the same fate as the scientist from the start.
4) The Playable Protagonists
* Gustavo Proudstar (ABRASIVE, COMMANDING, RATIONAL): The patriarch of the Proudstar family. He is an army veteran and the most skeptical of his family. He is portrayed by Zahn McClarnon.
* Miriam Begay-Proudstar (CONFIDENT, RESOURCEFUL, PERSUASIVE): The matriarch of the Proudstar family. She runs the family’s market and is the most superstitious of her family. She is portrayed by Irene Bedard.
* Jason Proudstar (INSECURE, UNMOTIVATED, INTELLIGENT): Gustavo’s younger brother who he doesn’t have much respect for. He’s smart, but is lazy and fine with mooching off his brother and sister-in-law. He is portrayed by Michael Greyeyes.
* Dante Begay (CONSERVATIVE, METHODICAL, PROTECTIVE): Miriam’s younger brother who works as a tribal police officer. He generally gets along with the Proudstars, but frequently disagrees with his niece Eliza over her political beliefs. He is portrayed by Martin Sensmeier.
* Eliza Proudstar (DRIVEN, COMPLEX, IRREVERENT): The eldest daughter of Gustavo and Miriam. She is a progressive political activist who moved out to the city, but visits the family from time to time. She is portrayed by Q'orianka Kilcher.
* Wenona Proudstar (INNOCENT, AMBITIOUS, ADVENTUROUS): The youngest daughter of Gustavo and Miriam. She is a college student but secretly dreams of being a famous actress. She is portrayed by Amber Midthunder.
* Freddy Kim (FOOLHARDY, RELAXED, LOYAL): The only playable character from the ghost hunter group. He is his group’s camera man and the one who doesn’t take the ghost stories seriously. He is portrayed by Steven Yeun.
* Melissa Frost (RUTHLESS, DETERMINED, COURAGEOUS): The only playable character from the gangmembers. Although she is a ruthless thug, it’s slowly revealed that she has a heart of gold. She is the gangmember who suggests a truce with the Proudstars. She is portrayed by Victoria Pedretti.
5) Significant Non-Playable Characters (note: I’m not covering every single character in this hypothetical game)
* Samuel Fulci: The leader of the ghost hunters. He is obsessed with viewership and clout, to the point he ignores warnings about potential danger. He is portrayed by Bruce Campbell.
* Lars Waingrove: The leader of the gangmembers. He is a ruthless sociopath and the most dangerous person in the survivor group. Because of this, Lars can be considered the secondary antagonist of the game (sorta like Josh Washington or Travis Hackett, but less sympathetic). He is portrayed by Leigh Whannell.
* The CIA Agent / The Man in Black: An unnamed agent who is interrogating the player about the events of the story. Basically, this game’s version of the Psychiatrist/the Curator/Eliza Vorez. He is portrayed by Michael Biehn.

OTD in Music History: Legendary violin virtuoso Friedrich "Fritz" Kreisler (1875 - 1962) makes his American debut at Steinway Hall in New York City in 1888, kicking off his 1st American tour (1888–1889) with famed concert pianist Moritz Rosenthal (1862 - 1946).
A remarkable child prodigy, Kreisler first studied music at the Vienna Conservatory from 1882-1885 (where his teachers included Anton Bruckner [1824 – 1896]) before moving on to the Paris Conservatory from 1885-1887 (where his teachers included Léo Delibes [1836 - 1891] and Jules Massenet [1842 – 1912]).
When Kreisler graduated from the Paris Conservatory at the tender age of 12, he was awarded a prestigious gold medal -- beating out 40 other violinists (all of whom were at least 20 years old) to secure that honor.
Kreisler was also a noted composer who wrote a number of enduringly popular short pieces for the violin.
Some of these compositions were pastiches, ostensibly penned in the style of other composers -- and indeed, Kreisler originally "passed them off" as the work of famous Baroque composers including Giuseppe Tartini (1692 - 1770) and Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741).
When Kreisler finally came clean about this deception in 1935, a number of prominent music critics who had been completely taken in by this ruse raised a fuss in the press.
Kreisler, however, took great pleasure in wryly pointing out that whatever their qualms, the critics themselves had already conceded the high quality of the music itself: "The name printed on the sheet music may now change, but the musical value of the underlying notes remains very much the same!”
PICTURED: A publicity headshot showing the elderly Kreisler, which he signed and inscribed to a friend with "Xmas" wishes in 1945.
Today: Watch the only known (unfortunately silent) film footage of legendary violin virtuoso and composer Fritz Kreisler (1875 – 1962) playing his violin, which was shot at the house of a family friend c. 1930. It is actually rather surprising that we don’t have *more* film footage of Kreisler in action (including sound footage), considering that he lived into the 1960s. The most likely explanation comes from the fact that Kreisler was involved in a serious traffic accident in 1941, which put him in a coma for a week and largely derailed his later career. This unfortunate incident probably robbed of us many additional opportunities for film footage with sound to be shot... According to one eagle-eyed observed, Kreisler appears to be playing part of the “Sarabande” from J.S. Bach’s (1685 – 1750) 1st Violin Partita (BWV 1002).
