Mrs Middleton maintained that she had identified on Lady Bond's Coronation year hat a lobster, two hare's claws, a pineapple, a large bunch of parma violets, and a fox's mask and though no one believed her, everyone admitted that she had the roof of the matter in her.

This satire of old-fashioned hats appears in Angela Thirkell’s Before Lunch from 1939 and the coronation in question was the 1936 ceremony for George VI. Late 19th Century and early 20th Century hats did get enormous and crowded, and did feature various creatures, and flowers, and fruits, but even this concoction is denied by the other characters in the novel. The 1920s saw a simplification of hats as a fashion trend, and a reduction in the size of hats which meant that one could have a feather, a bow, a buckle, self-trimming, etc, but there would be much less room. As hats were simplified, so hair was cut and the bob became the new trends in hair styles. While women’s hair got a bit longer and softer in the 1930s, hats never attained such great size again.

Thirkell wrote novels from the 1930s through the 1950s, and many of them tell quietly comical stories of life in rural England, often including some suspense about whom will pair off and marry whom. #beforeandafter 🖤 On the left: watermarks. We rolled a white towel and set it under the brim, then dabbed the silk with cool water, then gently smoothed on a bit of #felsnaptha followed by a bit more water dabbing followed by fresh white towels to gently press out extra moisture. We continued to dab as it dried to be sure it didn’t try to bleed again. We’re surprised and pleased with the results! Lady Bond's hat was all that Daphne had hoped. A massive erection of brown velvet crowned with the produce of field, floor, and grove, it was perched high on its wearer's head with fine disregard of fashion. Lady Bond, whose mother was Scotch, had been brought up in the best tradition of Edinburgh hats, a tradition which dies hard and still dazzles the rash beholder's eye at afternoon concerts....

Women’s hats got bizarrely large during the late 19th Century and remained so into the early 20th Century. They were wide or tall or both, indeed crowned with birds, animals bits, flowers, and foliage. Then, some smaller and simpler shapes, such as the sailor or boater of straw with a straight crown and brim, borrowed from men, and in the 1920s, the cloche, or bell, which cupped the head with barely any brim at all. And neither of those shapes took a lot of trimming. So, this quotation dates both Lady Bond and the hat she wore in Angela Thirkell’s 1939 novel Before Lunch, as hats remained relatively small in the 1930s. Daphne might have worn any of a variety of shaped berets or a casual felt which was much like a man’s hat but with a bit more feathered trim.

Thirkell was an Englishwoman who wrote novels from the late 1920s through the 1950s, and must have known things about Edinburgh hats that I can only guess at. Lady Bond was attending church when the young woman Daphne spotted her. This was a formal public occasion and called for a formal hat as well.
