How did women manage to hide their gender at sea?
That is a really interesting thing when you consider that there were some who pretended to be men in order to be able to serve on a ship and even managed to remain undiscovered for a longer period of time. Certain circumstances played into their hands. For one thing, the crew, many of whom were boys or young men from about 9 to their mid-20s.Together with the clothing, which consisted of a loose shirt, a waiscoat or jacket, baggy trousers or petticoat breeches and a handkerchief around the neck, made it easy for the women to hide their curves. And since everyone wore their hair tied up long in a pigtail or ponytail, it wasn't very noticeable either. But what many had to do was, if their breasts were too big, to tie them flat so that they didn't stand out. So they were just mistaken for a young man in his teens or early twenties. Like Ann Johnson, the daughter of a shoemaker, who even served as Able Seaman in 1849. Her appearance was described as that of a handsome boy aged 16-17, even though she was already in her twenties.
Tumblr media
Mary Ann Talbot (1778 - 1808) donned male clothes and enlisted as a sailor during the Napoleonic Wars; she was wounded in 1794 and later captured by the French. She returned to London in 1796 but the following year was seized by a pressgang, shown here, and was forced to reveal her gender (x)
A much bigger problem was the daily need to go to the toilet. Because these facilities were more than primitive on a ship and rather practical in nature, because if it was necessary, well, then they just peed over the railing or used a urinal. Otherwise the men went to the head. The area in the bow behind the figurehead that served as a toilet. Many probably always went to the head, but it is also known that some used a small tunnel made of horn or metal as an aid to avoid attracting attention.
You would think that the ladies would have one more thing that would expose them. Because a comrade who bled once a month for a good week was something unusual. But there are no notes in historical writings about it. According to historians today, there are three theories. One is that the women on board lived such ferociously active lives that, like modern athletes in training today, they may have ceased to have periods. In case of prepubescent girls, the hard life and poor diet could have delayed the onset of puberty for several years. Another theory is that so many seamen suffered from a range of diseases and ailments including piles and gonorrhea that they were not likely to comment on one of their number having bloodstained clothing on occasion.
Considering these points, it was quite possible for women to pretend to be men and hide their true gender in order to serve as sailors at sea.

The napoleonic marshal‘s children
After seeing @josefavomjaaga’s and @northernmariette’s marshal calendar, I wanted to do a similar thing for all the marshal’s children! So I did! I hope you like it. c: I listed them in more or less chronological order but categorised them in years (especially because we don‘t know all their birthdays). At the end of this post you are going to find remarks about some of the marshals because not every child is listed! ^^“ To the question about the sources: I mostly googled it and searched their dates in Wikipedia, ahaha. Nevertheless, I also found this website. However, I would be careful with it. We are talking about history and different sources can have different dates. I am always open for corrections. Just correct me in the comments if you find or know a trustful source which would show that one or some of the dates are incorrect. At the end of the day it is harmless fun and research. :) Pre 1790

Sophie Jourdan (died in 1820)
Additional remarks: - Marshal Berthier died 8.5 months before his last daughter‘s birth. - Marshal Oudinot had 11 children and the age difference between his first and last child is around 32 years. - The age difference between marshal Grouchy‘s first and last child is around 43 years. - Marshal Lefebvre had fourteen children (12 sons, 2 daughters) but I couldn‘t find anything kind of reliable about them so they are not listed above. I am aware that two sons of him were listed in the link above. Nevertheless, I was uncertain to name them in my list because I thought that his last living son died in the Russian campaign while the website writes about the possibility of another son dying in 1817. - Marshal Augerau had no children. - Marshal Brune had apparently adopted two daughters whose names are unknown. - Marshal Pérignon: I couldn‘t find anything about his daughters, Justine, Elisabeth and Adèle, except that they died in infancy. - Marshal Sérurier had no biological children but adopted Marguerite-Félécité Desprez in 1814. - Marshal Marmont had no children. - I found out that marshal Saint-Cyr married his first cousin, lol. - I didn‘t find anything about marshal Poniatowski having children. Apparently, he wasn‘t married either (thank you, @northernmariette for the correction of this fact! c:)

She’s clever, self-assured, and stubborn as they come; rumor has it she once beat a trophy head in a staring contest. She firmly believes that a rule is only worth following as long as it helps somebody. Her experience with first aid has made her indispensable to the clumsier residents of the West, and years of experience has honed her instincts to a razor edge - if a bar fight breaks out, she’ll be the first to know, and you had better hope she’s on your side when she does. The speed and accuracy of her mind is only rivaled by her weapon: a Whitworth long range rifle, taken from the corpse of a Confederate sniper.

Born to a Chinese rail worker father, she doesn't mind living in the Western diorama; the clamor and chaos reminds her of home. Besides, it takes a lot more than rowdy cowboys to scare her.  Her take-no-shit attitude might make her seem aloof, but she's the most loyal friend you could ever hope for - she's always ready with a listening ear and solid advice. She spends her days slinging bottom-shelf liquor and keeping her finger on the pulse of the town gossip. There are some benefits to running the only saloon.

You can usually find him hanging around the bar, losing at cards and being terrible at darts. Though luck is hardly ever on his side, he never lets that stop him from trying, and he always keeps a sunny disposition even when things are at their darkest. He would hardly call himself an angel, though; he can hold his own against the Romans, and he definitely holds his fair share of grudges against them. He’s a gentle soul, though. He loves his partner, Micah, more than anything – except their kids, Maria and Max, of course.

He’s borne witness to a lot of strange things in his life, so nothing really phases him anymore – not even living in a history museum a century and a quarter in the future. He’s often serious and quiet, though he’ll always volunteer to help if someone needs it. He just prefers to stay in the background. When it comes to fighting the Romans, though, it’s good to remember that it’s always the quiet ones you have to look out for. When he isn’t kicking Roman ass, he prefers to spend his time hanging out in Leung’s Bar with Luke, his partner, and their kids, Max and Maria.
Image 5:
The Twins aka The Seedlings aka Maria Jane Ogden Rios Maitland she/her and Maximiliano Isaiah Ogden Rios Maitland he/him Maria and Max Rios Maitland are twins who are joined at the hip in every way but literal. Maria is bouncy, outspoken, and passionate about her friends, while her brother is softer, shyer, and highly opinionated about what’s right and wrong. Like all siblings, they have their ups and downs, but they always resolve it in the end; the fact that they share a bed probably helps. When they aren’t in school or out playing with their friends, they can be found drawing on any available surface. They’re proof that a family doesn’t have to be conventional - sometimes, a family is a little boy, a little girl, their two gay dads, and the lesbians whose bar they all live on top of.

Born 194 years ago today, 12th May 1828, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was an English poet, illustrator, painter and translator, and a member of the Rossetti family. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Rossetti was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement.
Rossetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism. His early poetry was influenced by John Keats. His later poetry was characterised by the complex interlinking of thought and feeling, especially in his sonnet sequence, The House of Life. Poetry and image are closely entwined in Rossetti's work. He frequently wrote sonnets to accompany his pictures, spanning from The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) and Astarte Syriaca (1877), while also creating art to illustrate poems such as Goblin Market by the celebrated poet Christina Rossetti, his sister.
Rossetti's personal life was closely linked to his work, especially his relationships with his models and muses Elizabeth Siddal (whom he married), Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris.
The painter, and art critic, Roger Fry wrote in 1916, "Rossetti more than any other artist since Blake may be hailed as a forerunner of the new ideas" in English Art.
The son of émigré Italian scholar Gabriele Pasquale Giuseppe Rossetti and his wife Frances Mary Lavinia Polidori, Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born in London, on 12 May 1828. During his childhood, Rossetti was home educated and later attended King's College School, and often read the Bible, along with the works of Shakespeare, Dickens, Sir Walter Scott, and Lord Byron.
Rossetti's first major paintings in oil display the realist qualities of the early Pre-Raphaelite movement. His Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) and Ecce Ancilla Domini (1850) portray Mary as a teenage girl.
In 1850, Rossetti met Elizabeth Siddal, an important model for the Pre-Raphaelite painters. Over the next decade, she became his muse, his pupil, and his passion. They were married in 1860.
For many years, Rossetti worked on English translations of Italian poetry including Dante Alighieri's La Vita Nuova (published as The Early Italian Poets in 1861). These and Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur inspired his art of the 1850s. His visions of Arthurian romance and medieval design also inspired William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones.
Around 1860, Rossetti returned to oil painting, abandoning the dense medieval compositions of the 1850s in favour of powerful close-up images of women in flat pictorial spaces characterised by dense colour. These paintings became a major influence on the development of the European Symbolist movement. In them, Rossetti's depiction of women became almost obsessively stylised. He portrayed his new lover Fanny Cornforth as the epitome of physical eroticism
Rossetti's wife, Elizabeth, died of an overdose of laudanum in 1862, possibly a suicide, shortly after giving birth to a stillborn child. Rossetti became increasingly depressed, and on the death of his beloved Lizzie, buried the bulk of his unpublished poems with her at Highgate Cemetery, though he later had them dug up.
After the death of his wife, Rossetti leased a Tudor House at 16, Cheyne Walk, in Chelsea, where he lived for 20 years surrounded by extravagant furnishings and a parade of exotic birds and animals. Rossetti was fascinated with wombats, asking friends to meet him at the "Wombat's Lair" at the London Zoo in Regent's Park, and spending hours there. In September 1869, he acquired the first of two pet wombats, which he named "Top". It was brought to the dinner table and allowed to sleep in the large centrepiece during meals. Rossetti's fascination with exotic animals continued throughout his life, culminating in the purchase of a llama and a toucan, which he dressed in a cowboy hat and was trained to ride the llama round the dining-table for his amusement.
The savage reaction of critics to Rossetti's first collection of poetry contributed to a mental breakdown in June 1872. Toward the end of his life, he sank into a morbid state, darkened by his drug addiction to chloral hydrate and increasing mental instability. He spent his last years as a recluse. On Easter Sunday, 1882, he died at the country house of a friend, where he had gone in a vain attempt to recover his health, which had been destroyed by chloral as his wife's had been destroyed by laudanum.
Rossetti was played by Oliver Reed in Ken Russell's television film Dante's Inferno (1967).
The original photograph of "The Rossetti Family", was taken on the 7th October 1863 by Lewis Carroll (writer of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)

👀👀👀👀 have you talked about this kids book idea before???? I love that lad already and we’ve only just seen him
I haven’t actually posted about any non-fandom stuff in a looong time 😅 but this was originally meant to be a writeblr, so you’re very welcome to some miscellaneous information! Thank you for asking!
Basically, I did a Suzanne Collins. I watched The Owl House with my friend while I had covid (on a video call!!! Not in person!) and it got me thinking about how there are stories for tweens and there’s teen fiction, but that the former tends to be for younger kids (8-12) and the latter, while still appropriate for 12-15 y/os, tends to pick up at ~16, and The Owl House did a really good job at sitting some place in the middle.
I also, at some point during my isolation, watched Annie (2014) and What We Do In The Shadows (also 2014) back to back and thought ‘there’s something in the vampire adopts his great great great grandchild plot line’.
I didn’t go for that in the end, not because it’s not cool but because it’s much more important to me to make a point about chosen family.
So then I’ve got KD (not Katie!), my actual protagonist. She’s a 14 y/o in the foster system who knows nothing about her family except for whoever gave her mother her surname probably had family in India at some point. She can be mean, but she’s a good kid. She’s also part of a vampire hunter’s club, despite not believing in vampires, because it’s run by her best friend and her crush attends.
And of course, my no. 1 most special boy Aaditya. His family moved from Bengal to London in 1849; they were very wealthy. In 1872 he thought he was about to have his first kiss. Instead he was turned into a vampire. He did not like that.
For 150 years he was sad and confused, but eventually decided to get his life together, hence becoming a foster parent. He took night classes and did it all properly and officially, because he may be a creature of the night but he’s also a gentleman, damnit!
There are kind of two main plots going on, I don’t quite know yet how to balance them well. The first is KD figuring out she’s living with a vampire and how that affects her so called title as a “vampire hunter”. The second is Aaditya meeting Darius, a divorced dad of two kids in the year below KD, and the kids trying to stop them going on dates for their own respective reasons.
Everything turns out pretty well, but not without casualties - Addi loses an arm (it’s complicated) and KD loses a friend. But in the end they both get a much bigger family than they bargained for (a bonus dad and two step siblings!); KD’s crush asks her out and she panics and says she’s too young for a girlfriend, but to ask her again at her birthday party at the weekend, because then she’ll be 15; and Aadi gets a proper first kiss, but still thinks it’s kinda gross bc this repressed asexual man just wants someone to fall asleep on on the sofa.
Idk, as you can see I have the broad strokes, and I have some finer details worked out too, but a lot of the in-between stuff is missing which is why I don’t know if it’ll ever happen. But I’m much better at following through with projects now compared to when I was younger, so you never know!

SAINT OF THE DAY (October 24)
Tumblr media
Anthony Mary Claret was born in Spain on 23 December 1807, the fifth of the eleven children of Juan and Josefa Claret.
Like his father, he was a weaver by trade. In his spare time, he studied Latin. At the age of 22, he entered the seminary and was ordained in 1835.
He preached and worked in the missions for 10 years.
On 16 July 1849, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, he established the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (The Claretians).
Pope Pius IX gave approval to the congregation on 22 December 1865.
He also founded the great religious library at Barcelona, which was called "Librería Religiosa" (now "Librería Claret").
Shortly thereafter, he was named Archbishop of Santiago, Cuba. While he was archbishop, he successfully reformed the clergy and the laity.
He returned to Spain to be Queen Isabella II’s confessor, to oversee his congregation, and to publish a few books.
In 1868, due to the Spanish Revolution, both Archbishop Claret and the queen were exiled.
After Vatican I, the archbishop sought refuge at a Cistercian monastery in France where he died on 24 October 1870.
He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 24 February 1934. He was canonized 16 years later by Pope Pius XII on 7 May 1950.
His zealous life and the wonders he wrought, both before and after his death, testified to his sanctity.
Claret is the patron saint of weavers.
The “spiritual father of Cuba” was a missionary, religious founder, social reformer, queen's chaplain, writer, publisher, archbishop, and refugee.
