The New Nissan Qashqai SUV Is INCREDIBLE!

Through its first two generations, the Nissan Qashqai for sale was a relatively affordable but somewhat conservative player in the compact-to-medium SUV space, but the third-generation model that was launched in South Africa recently is a whole new ball game.

Most vehicles in this segment have moved upmarket and the new Nissan Qashqai is no exception, with its starting price of R568 200 for the manual transmission base model (who still buys a manual in this segment?) while the top-of-the-pile Acenta Plus that we had on test recently commands R670 000 (in December 2022). All are powered by a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine.

Sure, that seems a bit steep for a Nissan Qashqai, but there are two things to keep in mind here. For starters, rivals with similar specs such as the Toyota Rav4, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson are all priced in the R650 000 – R700 000 ballpark. Second, the redesigned Nissan is quite a bit more sophisticated than its predecessor.

Built on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s new CMF-C architecture, the new Qashqai is 48mm longer and 29mm wider than the previous version, but despite this, it has only gained 37kg in weight, while torsional stiffness is significantly improved.

But the real drawcard for consumers will probably be its striking new exterior design, with its crisp, chiselled lines, 19-inch Diamond Cut alloy wheels, boomerang headlights and large V-Motion grille.

What is it like to drive?

The new Nissan’s beauty is more than skin deep and on the road, the SUV is impressively quiet and refined. It has a sophisticated feel to it and although the suspension is a little on the firm side, which you’ll feel over larger speed bumps, the ride quality is still more than acceptably comfortable.

Being engineered for European roads, it handles well for an SUV and the steering feels communicative and well weighted.

Power comes from a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 110kW and 250Nm, fed to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox. If you opt for the manual base model, outputs are restricted to 96kW and 240Nm.

The 110kW automatic model that we spent time with delivered adequate performance. There’s enough low-down torque to avoid the excessive revving that results in that annoying CVT drone, most of the time at least.

As for fuel consumption, we achieved 6.6 litres per 100km at highway speeds, while in-town driving saw the readout climb to 10.7 litres per 100km, and that’s after some careful driving. Show some right pedal enthusiasm and it can easily swing towards the 13 litres/100km mark.

What’s it like inside?

That refined and sophisticated feel that I referred to earlier? That’s very much apparent in the cabin design of the new Qashqai, with its tastefully executed lines and high-quality materials. The command centre is a new 12.3-inch (31cm) touchscreen infotainment system, which impressed us with its crisp, modern graphics. The system was also fairly easy to operate, with main menu items placed along the right side of the screen. The new dashboard also has separate ventilation controls below the screen which are user-friendly.

Sadly the digital instrument cluster that is available overseas isn’t fitted to the South African models, which ship with conventional analogue dials.

Equipment is generous in the range-topping Acenta Pus model, which comes with a 10-speaker Bose sound system and diamond-quilted leather seats with electric adjustment as well as heating and massaging for the front occupants. As with the mid-range Acenta model, it also comes with automatic climate control and Nissan’s Pro Pilot driver assist package, which includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist. Is the Nissan Qashqai practical?

Rear legroom is decent enough, as there is a little bit of stretching space for normal-sized occupants, but it’s not as spacious as some rivals. Rear headroom should be sufficient for most passengers, but taller folk might struggle.

The boot has a volume of 504 litres with the seats in place and 1 593 litres with them folded. The loading compartment is a bit on the shallow side, but the area is quite vast.

Verdict

While it has become somewhat more expensive, the Nissan Qashqai has made a decent stride upmarket with a package that is somewhat more refined and better equipped than its predecessor. Its striking design and smart cabin are also likely to win fans.

The Qashqai has an impressive warranty, valid for six years or 150 000km, but the three-year/90 000km service plan is unfair on those who don’t do high mileage.

An auto reviewer spent a week with the crème de la crème of the Tiggo SUVs - the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro.

In terms of design and overall appeal, Chery is indeed very different from what I've initially become accustomed to. This is no longer a basic econobox, but a crossover with a lot of bells and whistles. The Tiggo 8 Pro is a follow-up to the Tiggo 8 from two years ago, but the significant changes outside made it look like it's a completely new model.At first glance, the Tiggo 8 Pro definitely has a more upscale look than the standard Tiggo 8. There's a lot less going on now with its front fascia, while it's earned its own bling-bling with the “Sunshine Galaxy” grille that has those shiny rectangular elements and the diamond mesh first seen in the Tiggo 7 Pro.At the back, the revised taillights give somewhat of a European vibe to it with its faux diffuser and its two neatly-shaped functional exhaust tips. Compared to Chery's other models, the Tiggo 8 Pro is the only crossover that has the word C H E R Y spelt on it instead of the usual badge. Perhaps this is the manufacturer's way of saying that this is indeed their flagship model.When you look at it from the side, the Tiggo 8 Pro has a body shape that accentuates the added passenger and cargo room from the B-pillar onwards, which somewhat reminds me of how Hyundai did it with the third-generation Grand Santa Fe. Being the higher-spec model, the Tiggo 8 Pro also sports a panoramic glass roof like the standard Tiggo 8.While I'm not a fan of chrome, I really like how the katana-shaped trim adds to the car's luxury appeal and how it blends into those stylish 18-inch wheels. It's not out of place compared to those you see in car accessory shops in Banawe or on your favourite online shopping app, so kudos to Chery for coming up with a well-thought-out design for its exterior.Once you press the unlock button and finish the ensuing LED light dance, the Tiggo 8 Pro welcomes you to an interior you'll normally see in vehicles with significantly higher price tags. The standard Tiggo 8 had black leather, but the Pro's got more flair with the brown upholstery. It's a major interior flex, to say the least, and you might not want to put on dark-coloured window films for this one.Getting in and out of the Tiggo 8 Pro is a relatively easy task thanks to the low ride height and large doors for the first two rows. There are plenty of premium amenities in front like power seats with heating/cooling and memory function on the driver side, plus butterfly headrests like those seen in Range Rovers.The dashboard follows a three-screen layout – one for the instrument cluster, the other for the infotainment system, and the third one for climate control settings. The 12.3-inch instrument cluster has digits instead of dials for the speedometer and tachometer and can be configured through the steering wheel controls to get vehicle information like maintenance alerts and fuel economy figures.Meanwhile, the touchscreen infotainment system has Apple CarPlay, but it doesn't have Android Auto. Android users can opt for the QD Link, or just connect via Bluetooth. Other than that, the infotainment screen displays the 360-degree camera that comes in really handy when parking the large crossover, plus the settings for the driver assistance systems.All three screens have crisp displays, albeit with some very minor nuances in the language of the interface. While it's good that it still has toggle switches to control the A/C settings, I wasn't particularly impressed with the choice of material on the piano's black centre console. The unit I drove only had about 5,000 km on it, but it does get scratched easily. Maybe Chery can come up with a screen protector for it, or you know, do it the typical Filipino car owner way – not removing the peel-off plastic.The same goes for the placing of the wireless charging pad underneath the centre console, which is not so convenient for the front passenger. Placing it just between the auto brake hold button and the armrests, at the expense of the cupholder, could have made more sense, ergonomically.The second-row seats get their own A/C vents plus a single USB charger, and the centre armrests are equipped with cupholders. The panoramic glass roof extends all the way there and helps heighten the ambience. There's no driveshaft bulge in the middle as the Tiggo 8 Pro is front-wheel-drive, and there's plenty of headroom and legroom for my 5'9” frame.While the first two rows feel like first and business class, the third-row seats, like any other crossover in this segment, feel like economy class due to their limited head and legroom. Provided it has nice headrests and A/C vents on the side, the third-row seats are best left for children or smaller adults.With the third-row seats folded flat, the Tiggo 8 Pro easily swallowed our luggage and camera gear when we used it for a weekend trip outside Metro Manila. Loading stuff at the back was made convenient by the power tailgate and the low floor.The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro uses a 1.6-litre T-GDI (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection) engine that puts out 43 kW and 290 Nm of torque paired to a 7-speed wet-type dual-clutch transmission. Our last review of the standard Tiggo 8 with the 1.5-litre turbo had adequate power for its size – now this one's more powerful. But it's not just about the power we're after, but how it drives.So how did it feel behind the wheel of the Tiggo 8 Pro?For starters, the Tiggo 8 Pro is a relatively big crossover, so don't expect a hatchback or a subcompact crossover-like agility with this one. Power is available on tap, but it's more of a smooth cruiser that's great for a relaxing and comfortable highway drive. Chery tuned the suspension more on the comfort side while remaining stable and composed towards bumps and road imperfections even at highway speeds. There's a very minimal effort with the steering wheel with how light it is, and the cabin is very quiet.I must admit I wasn't initially confident with the braking power of the Tiggo 8 Pro since it had a longer pedal journey compared to the cars I've driven before, but spending a few more days driving the crossover eventually got me used to it.The dual-clutch transmission feels smooth, though it could get jerky at times when you're trying to get going on an incline. A good hill hold function would fix that. I was also a bit surprised that there were only two driving modes – Eco and Sport, which leaves me wanting a middle ground between the two. Eco mode is great for saving fuel as it always wants to go to the highest gear possible and minimize revs, but at the expense of responsiveness when you need to kick down a gear when overtaking. On the other hand, the Sport mode really holds the gears to maximize power, but of course, that means you're sipping more fuel than normal.Speaking of fuel economy, the Tiggo 8 Pro's figures are what you would expect from a typical large crossover. I did 8.3 km/l in the city and 13 km/l on the highway. But with its fuel tank capacity only limited to 51 litres, you'll see the gas gauge going down faster than what the numbers suggest. Perhaps Chery could have fitted a larger fuel tank for the Tiggo 8 Pro, as the crossover really felt great to drive on long-distance trips.When it comes to its advanced driver assist features like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and motorcycle alert, it's been configured to keep you very safe, but perhaps perform too sensitively. The car would turn its hazard lights on for every passing motorcycle which is good, but it can get bothersome at times. Not to mention, the lane-keep assist could use a bit more refinement. A software tweak or update could probably address these.Chery's return to the Philippine market has been nothing short of a success as the entire initial inventory of the Tiggo 8 Pro has already sold out. It's a product of all the years Chery worked on their cars to step out of the shadows of their not-so-stellar past.With better consumer brand awareness, the warranty only sweetens the deal on the already attractive price tag considering the luxury amenities the crossover is packing. The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is at the price point of base variant Japanese PPV-SUVs and within the range of B and C-segment 5-seater Japanese crossovers. Even more space, optional comfort highlights and outstanding sound

The new GLS 63 has a significantly longer wheelbase than its predecessor. The resulting increase in space particularly benefits occupants in the second seat row. Legroom here is increased by 3.4 inches when the seats are in their rearmost position, which also makes it easier to get into the vehicle. The second row features a standard bench seat, with an optional configuration featuring two individual captain's seats and armrests, enabling easy access to the third row.

Optional comfort features reinforce the claim of "the S-Class among SUVs": the AIR-BALANCE package, ENERGIZING package or ENERGIZING package Plus, the Warmth and Comfort package and various packages for the rear passengers raise the level of luxury in the interior to the highest level. The optional Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system or the Burmester® surround sound system guarantee a remarkable and top-tier sound experience.

Top performer: the AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine with integrated starter-generator

For the first time, the AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine found in the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 is equipped with an integrated EQ Boost starter-generator. It unites a starter motor and an alternator in a single, powerful electric motor integrated between the engine and the transmission. This unit can provide up to an additional 21 hp of output and 184 lb-ft of torque, enabling particularly fast sprints from a standstill or sprints when overtaking. This innovative component not only supplies the 48-volt electrical system and is used as a power generator, it also performs hybrid functions. These include boost, recuperation, gliding and the virtually imperceptible restarting of the engine with the start/stop function. For the first time, the EQ Boost starter-generator is also responsible for idle speed control. This allows fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology.

Furthermore, this modern 48-volt electrical system allows for the use of new technologies. It reliably supplies the onboard electrical consumers (e.g. air conditioning and heating elements plus infotainment and assistance systems) with energy while ensuring full driving power.

Other distinctive features of the AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine include two turbochargers positioned inside the cylinder "V" configuration. The main advantages of this design are the compact engine construction, optimal response and low exhaust emissions. In the GLS 63 this engine develops an output of 603 hp. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 4.1 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph.

Comfortable and dynamic: AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed automatic transmission (TCT = Torque Converter Transmission) ensures highly responsive acceleration with short shift times, and allows for a comfortable and fuel- efficient driving style. The transmission is optimized for the engine and promises hallmark agility when moving off from a standstill with speedy gearshifts – either automatic, or manual via the steering wheel shift paddles. Upshifts or downshifts are implemented instantly. Especially in the "Sport+" drive program and in manual mode, the transmission is very responsive. Another strength of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G are the fast multiple downshifts. For example, on kick-down, the transmission can shift directly from 9th to 5th gear or from 5th to 3rd gear.

Equipped for critical limits: the air suspension with continuous damping adjustment

The standard AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with special spring/damper set-up and adaptive adjustable damping ADS+ (Adaptive Damping System) combines outstanding driving dynamics with high ride comfort. It supports a driving experience that is characterized by a high level of agility, neutral cornering behavior and optimized traction. The damping characteristics can be preselected in three stages - "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport+", allowing a clear distinction between high long-distance comfort and sporty vehicle dynamics.

Thanks to pneumatic self-levelling, the GLS 63 maintains a constant vehicle level regardless of the vehicle load. The ride height is generally lowered by 0.4 inches when selecting the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs "Sport" and "Sport+". In the "Comfort" drive program, the vehicle is not lowered by 0.4 inches until the speed exceeds 75 mph, and is raised back to normal level when the speed falls below 44 mph. This reduces aerodynamic drag and therefore fuel consumption. In addition, handling stability is improved thanks to a lower center of gravity. To increase ground clearance on poor surfaces or for ramps, the ride height can be raised by up to 2.2 inches at the touch of a button when the engine is running – both when stationary and when driving at a speed of up to 44 mph.

Intelligent and convenient: AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL roll stabilization

A new feature makes a significant contribution to the AMG-specific driving dynamics: The AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilization system, powered by the 48-volt system with two independently operating, electro-mechanical actuators at the front and rear axle. It precisely compensates body movements and ensures controllable, direct handling even at the critical limits.

When cornering, active electro-mechanical stabilizers at the front and rear axle generate a fully variable control moment, which counteracts rolling movements and allows optimal self-steering and load cycle characteristics. In addition, it increases ride comfort in a straight line because stimuli from one-sided road bumps are balanced out. Movements in the body can be actively and optimally adjusted to the driving conditions.

Another benefit compared with the usual hydraulic-based systems is the significantly faster response. The AMG control system can adapt the driving status to the conditions in a matter of milliseconds.

High traction: AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive

For maximum traction and dynamics, the new GLS 63 is equipped with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution from 0:100 to 50:50, along with an AMG electronic rear-axle locking differential. The intelligent control variably links the permanently driven rear axle with the front axle and continually calculates the ideal torque distribution – depending on the driving situation and the driver's wishes. The driver therefore benefits from the advantages of a traction-oriented all-wheel drive system, as well as those of a purely rear-wheel drive - and from excellent handling characteristics on any surface. As well as traction and lateral dynamics, the all-wheel drive system improves the longitudinal dynamics.

Even more safety and comfort: the driving assistance systems

The latest generation of Mercedes-Benz driving assistance for cooperative driver support is also available for the new GLS 63. These systems further enhance the level of active safety in the vehicle. As standard, this includes Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with route-based speed adjustment. This system uses information from LiveTraffic to recognize slow-moving traffic at an early stage and respond accordingly. With the Driving Assistance package Plus, Active Stop-and-Go Assist is substantially able to perform the tasks of keeping in lane and maintaining the safety distance with a high level of availability at speeds up to around 37 mph. Moving off can be automatic up to one minute after coming to a stop. Once the traffic jam clears, the GLS accelerates back up to the speed preset for Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with route-based speed adaptation.

Even better day-to-day suitability: the MBUX infotainment system with AMG-specific displays

The innovative operating and display concept MBUX is standard in the GLS 63 and includes numerous AMG-specific contents. With the Widescreen Cockpit display, the instrument cluster and touchscreen multimedia display visually combine into one unit. Whether operated via the touchpad, Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel, voice control or optional gesture control: the control concept is both versatile and flexible. Numerous functions can also be activated via the intelligent voice-operated control "Hey Mercedes". The optional MBUX Interior Assist also allows intuitive, natural operation of different comfort and MBUX functions by movement recognition and gestures, creating an even closer connection between the vehicle, driver and passengers.

The instrument cluster has its own specific details such as the AMG start-up menu and four selectable styles: "Modern Classic", "Sport", "Discreet" or "Supersport". When the AMG-specific DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs "Trail" and "Sand" are activated, off-road-specific settings such as slope, incline and level can be selected and displayed on the instrument cluster. The newly designed visualizations in the multimedia display allow further vehicle functions to be experienced via animated presentations.

Variable driving experience: AMG DYNAMICS and AMG DYNAMIC SELECT

AMG DYNAMICS encompasses the intelligent control electronics for all vehicle-specific functions that enhance agility, for example, the steering, torque distribution, all-wheel drive and active stabilizers. This control allows widely variable driving dynamics, and therefore a highly variable driving experience – from moderate to extremely dynamic. AMG DYNAMICS also provides the basis for the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes. The driver either selects the preconfigured mode using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT switch, or defines the vehicle configuration himself/herself in "Individual" mode.

An overview of the six driving modes:

"Comfort": comfortable and fuel-efficient driving, e.g. thanks to early upshifts. Suspension and steering are set up for an emphasis on comfort.

"Sport": Sporty characteristics thanks to more agile response to accelerator pedal input, shorter shift times and earlier downshifts. More dynamic suspension setup.

"Sport+": Extremely sporty characteristics thanks to an even more agile throttle response, selective torque control for upshifts. Increased idle speed for faster pulling away. An even more dynamic setup for suspension, steering and powertrain.

"Individual": individual adjustment of the drive system, transmission, AMG DYNAMICS, suspension and exhaust system. In addition, the gliding function is available in the "Reduced" and "Moderate" drive settings.

"Trail": safe driving at maximum performance on soft, muddy or slippery ground. The suspension is raised to a higher level (2.16 inches more ground clearance). From 44 mph the suspension is automatically lowered again.

"Sand": adjustments to the suspension and the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive are made for sporty driving on loose, sandy surfaces. The suspension is raised to a higher level (2.16 inches more ground clearance). From 44 mph the suspension is automatically lowered again.

The drive modes are linked to the AMG DYNAMICS agility control, which means that the handling characteristics can be closely matched with different requirements and driving conditions. Behind the umbrella term AMG DYNAMICS are the agility functions "Basic", "Advanced" and "Pro", whose functions are automatically selected by the respective driving mode. Additionally there are the "Traction" and "Slide" levels in the off-road "Trail" and "Sand" drive programs when the ESP® is deactivated.

Regardless of the selected drive program, the driver can use the buttons in the center console or the optional AMG steering-wheel buttons to directly select manual transmission mode, the preferred suspension level and also the exhaust system mode.

AMG speed-sensitive sport power steering and AMG high-performance braking system

The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering features a variable ratio. It delivers direct steering action and precise feedback. The steering power assistance level is assigned to the various stages of the AMG DYNAMICS system. The configuration in "Basic" and "Advanced" is comfort-oriented. "Pro" has a configuration that supports a sporty driving style and provides more surface feedback.

Great power, large brakes: the correspondingly large high-performance braking system reliably slows down this performance SUV even with heavier loads, and with short braking distances. 15.7 x 1.5 inch internally ventilated and perforated brake disks are used at the front axle, with 6-piston fixed calipers painted in grey with white AMG lettering. At the rear, the internally ventilated integral brake disks measure 14.6 x 1.3 inches and have a 1-piston floating caliper.
