The Mouse and The Motorcycle

Summary: Javi offers to help you unpack your classroom before school starts after getting moved to a different room over the summer. Little does he know, the room is one he's already very well acquainted with.

Javi still hadn’t quite gotten over the surreal feeling of pulling up to Alma Pierce Elementary School. Before he’d met you, he didn’t have enough fingers or toes to count the amount of times he had visited the elementary his mother worked at for her entire teaching career before she had gotten sick. It was a place he thought he’d never visit again after she had passed, much less frequent. But since the day he quite literally bumped into you in the Alma Pierce gymnasium, Javi had found himself back at the elementary school more times than he could have imagined. The remembrance of a place that once made him feel hurt and pain for the things he had lost, now replaced by the joy and comfort of watching his wife carry on the memory of his mom teaching at the very same school in the same grade.

Although you had insisted that Javi didn’t need to help, you knew damn well that was an argument you had no chance of winning. After the school had moved some staff to new positions around the building, your principal had to give you the unfortunate notice that you needed to change classrooms with only a week before school. You had been pulling close to 12 hour days for the past week, and Javi could tell how absolutely exhausted you were. Never needing to find an excuse to spend more time with you, he had offered to come in and help with whatever you needed to set up for the start of the school year, reminding your type A personality that he had been a part of helping his mom set up her classroom every year from the time he could walk.

As Javi stepped into the main office, he found Señora Gutierez, the same Secretary who had been there since what seemed like the dawn of time. “Hey, Señora.” Javi smiled, signing in at the front desk, giving her a wave.

“Hola, Javier, mi ducle niño. Qué estás haciendo aquí? (Hello, Javier, my sweet boy. What are you doing here?)” she grinned as she rushed over to Javi, wrapping him in a hug and giving him a kiss on the cheek.

“Coming to help my wife set up. I know she got moved to a new room and she’s been working like crazy to finish everything before next week. Plus it’s a good excuse to see her.”

“Dios mio, your wife! I keep forgetting you two got married this summer, congratulations, mijo, I am so happy for the two of you. She is a lucky woman.” She winked, giving Javi a playful swat against his arm as the two of them laughed. Javi rolled the gold band on his finger, smiling at the sight.

“Gracias, Señora. I don’t know about that, but I definitely am a lucky man, I can tell you that. What’s the room she’s in now?” Señora’s face lit up, a mischievous look growing across her face.

“I think you’ll have no problem finding it Javier. Room 106.” Javi stared at her in shock. He paused for a moment, making sure that he had heard her correctly.

“Wait, room 106 like-“

“Mmmhmmmm.” She beamed, cutting Javi off mid-sentence. “I don’t think you need directions. No go, your wife is waiting for you.”

Señora was right. There were few places in Alma Pierce Elementary School that Javi knew better than room 106. It was his childhood home away from home, his afternoon sanctuary, and his late summer hangout. Room 106 was Lucia Peña’s classroom from the day she had started teaching until the day she had passed. Javi couldn’t remember the last time that he had been inside that classroom, but taking the walk down the all too familiar West Wing hallway, he couldn’t help but wish for just a few more special moments there with her like the ones from all those years ago. The strangest thing about it, was that even after all those years, as he took his final strides to the door, Javi couldn’t help but smile at the fact that there was one thing that remained as a comforting similarity.

“Mrs. Peña” was still written above the door.

As Javi opened the door to the classroom, he was greeted by the sounds of heavy grunting and swearing as he watched you shove your entire bodyweight against a bookshelf twice your size, trying to push it across the floor. Immediately, Javi set down his food, rushing his way over to you, knowing that you’d let that damn bookcase fall on top of you before admitting defeat.

“Jesus, Hermosa, why are you doing this alone? You’re gonna hurt yourself.” He sighed, pulling you away from the shelf as you caught your breath.

“Hi, nice to see you too.” You huffed, crossing your arms over your chest, laughing through your labored pants before pressing up to give him a kiss. “Well, the office said the movers aren’t coming for another 3 days, and I have shit I need to put on these shelves, and it’s not doing me any good just sitting in the middle of my room. It’s not that bad, I moved it from over there.” You pointed to a crowded spot a few feet away from you, stacked with other desks and shelves.

“Yeah? And how long’d that take you?” He smirked, never surprised by your stubbornness to accomplish whatever it was you wanted done.

“.... 30 minutes.” You grumbled, looking away at the ground, knowing how much shit Javi was going to give you for spending all that time trying to push a stupid shelf. “And before you say anything, it’s heavier than it looks, okay?”

“I’m sure it is. You gonna let me help you, or are you gonna be too stubborn and fight with that shelf for another 30 minutes, Mrs. Peña?” Javi smirked, both at his sarcastic jab, and the way he couldn’t help but beam every time he said your new last name.

“God, it’s still so weird to hear, but I love it. I guess I’m gonna have to get used to hearing Mrs. Peña from little 8 year old voices all day long now, aren’t I? You laughed, sitting yourself on top of one of the desks that still needed to be rearranged, grinning at Javi as he stood in front of you.

“Believe it or not, you are not the first Mrs. Peña to ever hear your name all day in this room.” Javi’s voice trailed as he looked around the room, the comfort of the all too familiar space washing over him. You cocked your head to the side, scrunching your brow in confusion as you tried to process what Javi was trying to say, until it hit you like a ton of bricks.

“Woah… Wait… Do you mean that-”

“This was my mom’s old room. The whole time she taught here.” The smile on his face shared a mixture of joy and sorrow, knowing how happy it would have made his mother to know he had found a woman she loved, much less a wonderful teacher, now filling the shoes of the same role she had taken on before she passed.

“You’re being serious?” You raised your eyebrows at him, looking for confirmation, and that he wasn’t just pulling your leg.

“I spent every day after school here from Kindergarten until 5th grade, and then was here every summer to help her set up for the school year, even though it ended up with me just mostly trying to fix the copier after I kept jamming it.”

“Truth be told, it’s probably still the same copier that’s here now. If it makes you feel any better, I did legitimately kick it out of anger the other day.” The both of you snickered, the image of you in a fist fight with the copy machine making Javi shake his head. “Is it the same as you remember it? The room?” You asked gently, as Javi wandered, peeking over piles of book shelves and desks that needed to be unstacked, almost as if he was looking for something.

“A lot of it, yeah. Fuck, I wonder if he’s still here, or they finally fixed it…” He muttered under his breath, now crouching down and opening up one of your cabinet doors.

“What are you talking about?” You prodded, watching Javi dig through the back of the shelves inside.

“Fuck, of course they didn’t. he’s gotta be fucking dead by now…” Javi continued huffing under his breath before grunting as he stood back up, closing the doors behind him.

“I’m sorry, did you say he has to be dead by now? Should I be calling the Ghostbusters for some sort of treatment plan?” The look on your face was now genuine concern, truly hoping to not find anything alive, or worse case, dead in your new space.

“Fucking Ralph.”

“Javi, who the fuck is Ralph?”

“Ralph. The mouse. No matter how many times my mom told them about that damn hole in the cabinet or if we tried to fix it, he always found a way back in here…” Javi grumbled, looking around the room as if to try and find some sort of solution stacked between your unpacked boxes and furniture.

“... You’re telling me there’s a mouse named Ralph that lives in my room? Okay first of all, Javi, that thing has to be dead, there’s no way a single mouse can live that long. And second, why the hell did you name it Ralph? Third… Is it at least a nice mouse, or is it an asshole? Because I can tolerate a pleasant rodent, and I will provide cheese as a peace offering if need be.” You weren’t really sure whether to laugh, cry, or find some sort of weapon to prepare yourself for your new mouse battle.

“Oh he’s an asshole, alright. I swear to God, he took one of my whole sandwiches one day after school. I know for a fact it’s the same one, he’s got a chunk of his left ear missing and that bastard’s smart as hell.”

“Javi… I hate to break the news to you, but you sound like a literal crazy person. I’m sure me and this mouse will be okay. You still haven’t told me why his name is Ralph, you psycho.” You were now on the brink of full blown hysterics watching Javi so distressed about such a tiny creature. Javi held his hands up in defense from your acquisition, shrugging his arms before folding them across his chest.”

“Fine, fine. Don’t come crying to me when a goddamn mouse steals your lunch. And Ralph because of the Mouse and the Motorcycle. It was my favorite book as a kid, first one I ever remember reading on my own. Me and my mom read it so many times, and I’m pretty sure at one point she had to get a new copy because I wore hers out. We always joked that the mouse in her class had to be Ralph. Kinda stupid now, saying it out loud, I guess…” His eyes shifted towards the floor, staring down at his feet, toes tapping against the linoleum.

“Javi… That’s not stupid at all, that’s actually the sweetest thing ever. It is a great book, I should read it to my class this year, carry on the legacy of the old ass Ralph that still lives here, apparently.” You pushed yourself up off the desk, walking your way over to Javi, wrapping your arms around his waist, caging your chest against his. “And to carry on the legacy of your mom, because there isn’t a day that goes by that I wish I could have met her, and thank her for raising the sweet, mouse crazed man that is my husband.” You both giggled as Javi pressed a soft kiss into the top of your head, pulling you closer to him.

“She would have loved you so much, Osita. I’m sure there’s no one else that she’d rather have in her room but you.” He paused for a moment, leaning his head against yours, letting a deep breath rise in his chest, the pain and sadness exhaled out as it fell. “But if there’s one thing I do know, it’s that she would be pissed at me for not offering you food as soon as I got here, knowing how hard you’ve been working all day. Here.” He reached down, pickup up the to-go bag and handing it off to you.

“Thank you, Javi. Better get to work on these sandwiches… Wouldn’t want Ralph to get to them first.”

1 more chapter to go then we will have all 108. Phos was turned into a perfect human, but all humans are imperfect, to be a perfect human is to be imperfect. The professor said to burn the bridge back to humanity so that the new inorganic lifeforms could begin a new society free of the taint of humanity and I begin to wonder if that was impossible from the start. Much in the way Adamant taught the gems with their incomplete knowledge of humanity and how to live, Phos and Brother have guided the Pebbles in creating language and culture and just like Adamant none of it was intentional or done with malice.

I like many others found the Phos death scene to be extremely emotionally evocative, beautiful in how those pages blend the literal dissolution of Phos' body by the plasma of the dying sun with the metaphorical stripping away the years of Phos' existence as we the audience reflect back on his journey.

"You will change beyond all understanding, but something of you will remain." (The Memory - Fallen London)

"as different as they are now, some important things have not changed. this is hinted to us in 99, with the parallels it draws between the beginning of the story and where we are now (black panels with the same layout as the very first panels of the manga, and Phos lying in the grass, jobless, for who knows how long until someone calls out to them)... they still do not value their own existence and therefore take the message of “burn the bridge” to confirm their desire to erase their existence along with humanity’s. they fear making the pebbles "human" like them and bringing them the suffering that comes with that. however, i believe Phos has already given humanity to the pebbles. through their influence (both passive and intentional) the pebbles are intelligent, communicate with language, and create art- they make songs, dance, and tell stories. they are nothing but kind to Phos and each other, because Phos is nothing but kind to them. Phos is afraid of their human influence on the pebbles causing them harm, but their influence has brought everyone nothing but happiness, because they are "a kind child" who raised these other "children" to be kind as well, just as Pebble suggests in 106. this kindness and innocence inherent to Phos is contained within their gem heart." Unlike flayote, I agree more with CrashDunning in that I do not think Phos and the Pebbles have reached some glorious better life and have escaped the sufferings and evils of humanity, humans have not reached redemption because redemption is meaningless here. The gems and Lunarians chose the easy way out of being prayed to instead off passing on through their own efforts to better themselves like Shiro or the game board did.

The new planet is not some glorious heaven/pure land, it was always a part of the current universe. Things are the same as they were before. The world of flowers was not the Lunarians intended destination planet, Brother went off course, they were never suppose to land on that planet, that just happened to be the planet they ended up on. In ch 107 the gems in the flowers and the Pebbles likewise represent how the Lunarians and gems failed to achieve true enlightenment and are still stuck in the same universe being recycled over and over, but that is not such a bad thing, just how things are. There is both inescapable beauty and pain to existence. After a lot of imagery of failed enlightenment and an empty lotus pod, in ch 107 the lotus pod is finally filled with seeds, it has fulfilled it's lifecycle and will continue to be reborn.

So despite everything changing beyond recognition, Phos and sentient life itself, it all also remains the same.

Hey! based on the recent 096 thing,, what if you were immortal/immune to abnormal affects/effects? How would SCPs (such as 096, 106, 173, 049, and 035) react?

They both like and hate it. I mean if something happens to the host when they're near you, you'll just straight up put them on your face which WILL(probably) result to your death. And they do not want that to happen. And the bad thing... they can't read your mind properly(I mean they're probably interested and invested about what's happening in others life. It's the only good entertainment they can get in here).

Other than that, it's going to just adore you and your immunity to it. Like there weren't anyone who could look at it and not fall for their charm(manipulations), but look at you. Standing there alive and it's not even mad at you! Because it cares about you.

Oh it's not really a surprise to him, since there were and are some people that aren't afflicted with the pestilence(aren't dead from his touch). And he doesn't even need to lecture his cured patients about hurting you. They are always so docile with you, not getting rowdy. How convenient.

Before anything he does NOT want you to interact with many people(at all), since... what if they infect you? He won't like to see that, knowing that you're suffering from that wretched disease. But he can't exactly make you stay with him forever. He will hint and/or outright say that you need to stay away from certain people, however it's you decision to listen or not listen. You can make your own decisions. Even if that makes Doctor uncomfortable... with those 'intrusive' thoughts.

They are the calmest they have been in their entire existence, while someone looks at their face that is. And that does bring them some sort of comfort knowing that YOU of all creatures aren't going to die from their hands(unless some sort of accident happenS- WHO SAID THAT). The hands that killed too many.

And from those thoughts, the clinging begins. Knowing that you're 100% safe from being mutilated and turned into chunks of meat, they would want to spend a bit more time with you. Following, sitting or laying near you, anything. They are going to love it. The idea of listening to your heartbeat as a comfort thing is perfect for them. Whether they lay on you or you lay or rest on them(just don't forget to breathe).

Well That's not interesting(for him). His sadistic side fucking hates it. On one hand he can just grab you and squeeze your neck until you stop moving. But on other hand he (likes)tolerates you enough to not do it. Even if everything in his body tells him to fucking do it. Watch as your little life is slowly taken away from your desperate hands.

He'll more often than not will mostly ignore your presence. Especially if in a room/hallway there's a person(really hurt, showing it or 10-25 year old) and YOU, he'll always choose to go after the first option. And there's a possibility that he bumps into you, it's probably not intentional(i mean do you expect this corpse to walk straight and not bump and hit into things/people?)

(173 doesn't really have anomalous effects somewhat similar to other 4. But the best i can go is this):

Having 173 practically ignoring your existence and still moving while you look is.. good? Well for you, that is. You can't help anyone else, it's just a cold lie that you can look while they try to get away or clean the cell.

If you want to know it's thoughts about it. Well I mean it's not often that it has any thoughts(Literally head empty). Thoughts that usually appear are how it's next target's face going to look like as they're getting closer and closer. Oh and how their 'resting' face is going to look like.

Going back to your immunity, it knows, kinda acknowledge your existence in it's own weird way. Like it won't push you and just go a different path if you're blocking- let's say a door way. Or if you want to help some poor soul from dying, by just standing in the corner and that person being behind you. And surprise, surprise 173 looses it's interest entirely. How thoughtful of it.

so y’all remember this post i made about skk

well i’m gonna expand on it a lil bit because i swear i learn new things every day and one of those things is that Chuuya really deserves a fucking break (…/hj)

okay but seriously, the more i think about all the other skk moments where Dazai makes these big brain plans that ensure that, while it’s most definitely still dangerous, both him and Chuuya will win the fight and walk away from it alive at the very least. but in chapter 101… Dazai made and executed a plan that he thought had a good likelihood of defeating the enemy. but, it also put Chuuya in a situation where he actually could have died. and now Dazai’s in a perilous situation with, as far as we know, no one to help him. and i just wanna explore some new context and expand on a lil theory i came up with as to why this arc is important for skk (plus bonus theory! Dazai really fucked up this time and now he has to find a way to not actually die. i have a few ideas)

🔺spoiler warning for chapters 95, 98, 101, 105.5, 106 and 106.5 and the end of Beast🔻

god this is so long im sorry **i added a tldr under the cut for those of you who just want my rambling ass to get straight to the point 😭

TLDR because this thing is so FREAKING LONG OH MY GAWD

So while Dazai was in the prison, based on his reaction to Chuuya’s arrival being more anger than shock and his instigation of ‘one of them dying’ (talking to Fyodor), there’s reason to believe that Dazai and Ango had set up a plan involving Chuuya somehow breaking Dazai out of the prison on the same day Nikolai arrived. On top of this, Dazai’s character development is finally coming to the forefront in trying to save Sigma and keep him alive, as well as the remorse for trapping Chuuya with Fyodor in the water in order to buy himself time to escape ahead of Fyodor (instead of killing him there, since he knew that wouldn’t be enough to kill Chuuya as Dazai would never do that even if it meant sabotaging his own plans). And at the very end of chapt 106.5, his fall to his death could be prevented by a number of things including Chuuya coming out of vampirism and saving him, but it would also be interesting to see how skk’s relationship changes now that Dazai has to save himself and has so clearly changed from the time when he worked with Chuuya and relied on him to save him from danger (see: Lovecraft fight, Dead Apple & DA prologue). It’s also possible that Sigma will be used as a distraction for Fyodor and Nikolai while skk work their stuff and Dazai 100% still has the potential to win even in the bottom of the elevator shaft so long as he can get the antidote to the poison.

Starting in chapter 95, Dazai was the one who initially mentioned escaping (or dying). It was as if he knew something was going to happen soon that would lead to their eventual conflict to escape or at least some kind of confrontation that would end with one of their deaths. However, he is still caught off guard when Fyodor disappears from his cell first, and then was also surprised when the floor was literally opened up below him by Nikolai. Considering Fyodor didn’t seem to be planning an escape at the same time Dazai had mentioned it, if his reaction to Dazai is anything to go off of anyway, it’s clear that he had not planned for Nikolai to be there to bail him out of jail early. Therefore, it’s more likely that Dazai knew someone was on their way to break them out, and was planting the seed of the idea that one of them was going to die in the process.

It's also further proof that neither Dazai nor Fyodor had planned on Nikolai being there when they take a minute to assess the situation before Nikolai explains his 'Gogol Game', meaning they had to deduce what was happening in the moment instead of relying on a plan they already had laid out. Nikolai pretty much set into motion that one of them will, in fact, be dying at the end of this game if the poison is real and there truly is only one antidote. It doesn't matter who outsmarts who, because even Dazai could win at the bottom of the elevator so long as he can get his hands on the antidote (through Sigma or Chuuya, perhaps?).

Then we have his confession that he listens to the voices in his head him telling Sigma that there’s an “angel” talking to him in chapter 98. We already know that the “angel” is actually Ango, and the reason why I’m bringing it up is because of the context of the situation here.

Sigma and Dazai both hear loud noises coming from the prison floors above them. Dazai deduces that it’s not being caused by Nikolai, and not a result of Nikolai and Sigma breaking in, but before he even makes this analysis he says “It’s an intruder”. I find it odd that he would say this, considering there’s no way for them to know if there is a new intruder or if it’s the prison itself going into some kind of lockdown, or if it is in fact Nikolai causing chaos. Sigma calls this into question as well, asking how Dazai knows this, and the funny man says “an angel told him”. Without knowing Ango is communicating with him from the outside, this could have been taken as a typical Dazai one-off response deflecting the fact that he’s just stupidly smart, but it’s not. It’s referencing Ango giving him information. However, when did Ango communicate the situation to him then if it’s unfolding that very moment?

I think we can tell when if we look at this specific page here:

Right before they hear the loud noise, Dazai is being his usual goofy and mildly insane self, much to Sigma’s dismay, and then he suddenly just stops and turns around. Even for Dazai this behavior is odd, and what’s more, he randomly wants to now go to the employee service room when he literally had no concrete goal in mind just a few seconds ago when he was dancing around with Sigma and saying he wanted to go sightseeing (in hell). There’s even a panel of him looking like he just found something out or realized something, but it barely lasts more than a moment and Sigma doesn’t call attention to it. I believe that one panel signifies Dazai reacting to Ango sending him some last minute information on the situation at the prison, like he does every day, but this time it’s that there is an intruder in the prison. Or perhaps telling him that Chuuya arrived?

Considering they already know Nikolai and Sigma are there, this explains why Dazai would deduce that the commotion is caused by someone other than Nikolai getting bored waiting for the two stupid smart people to start drowning each other. He also says there’s only one possible answer to who that intruder is, which I’ll get to later so just hold on to that thought for now…

Chapter 101 is where it’s revealed that Dazai doesn’t have escape as his top priority right now, it’s actually to kill Fyodor while they’re still in the prison. He also explains how Ango is communicating to him with the time-stopping ability user. So with that information, and the fact that it seems like Dazai can request time to be stopped as well given he uses his advantage of being a walking anti-ability entity to waltz into the central command room and knock out all the guards while time is stopped for them, there’s good reason to believe that he had been planning something already with Ango to get him out of the prison prior to Nikolai's appearance.

Of course, Dazai is confident that they can beat Fyodor even though he has Chuuya under his ‘control’ (which is questionable at best at this point), because he’s been coming up with ways to kill Chuuya for seven years blah blah typical skk stuff… But it’s also interesting that Dazai would say this now, when in just a few minutes when he thinks he’s trapped Chuuya and Fyodor in a room to drown, he acts like he hates what he did. I also think this is why he’s being so overly goofy with Sigma, because it’s his default method of masking how he’s actually feeling. Whenever we see him not goofing off, his expression is usually partially hidden from view, and/or much more serious. Another thing of note is that while, yes he was probably apologizing for 'trapping' Chuuya like this, he was also apologizing because Dazai knew that if he failed to kill Fyodor here, he was going to be the one in a perilous situation. This is what is currently going on in chapter 106.5, as Fyodor sabotaged the elevator to fall and Dazai prioritized saving Sigma over himself not once, but twice in the span of a few pages.

And what is the other consistency we usually see with skk? Chuuya is there to bail Dazai out of these situations. This is what happened during their fight versus Lovecraft, where Dazai got hurt because nullification wouldn't work, and Chuuya had to get them out. This is also what happened in Dead Apple where Dazai was literally dead until Chuuya showed up and risked dying to save him, and even in Dead Apple’s prologue when he had to save Dazai from an enemy organization.

But now, Chuuya isn't there. He isn't there and Dazai is falling to his probable death.

The elevator trap was set up by Fyodor himself, which is why the water set itself on fire in 106... But besides that, it's clear that Dazai tampering with the electronics in the elevator was probably him locating the mechanisms to open the doors, therefore making it so that there are 'no traps', and would explain how he knew where to shoot in chapt 106.5 when he shot the mechanism keeping the door shut.

Fyodor's comment on skk having a shallow bond feels almost out of place for him. He's not usually one to brag, much less about how he can wield someone's boyfriend better than them. I also think his little monologue here was partially payback for Dazai's guy speech back in chapt 101. However, I think Fyodor is wrong to try and say Dazai didn't foresee Chuuya getting out of the situation, because he absolutely would have. I think trapping them in the room like that was less of a play to kill Fyodor and Chuuya together, but to buy time in order to reach the exit. There’s no way Dazai would be willing to actually kill Chuuya just to get rid of Fyodor if he can help it, meaning he’s probably buying time and waiting for the poison to kick in since Chuuya wouldn’t be effected by it. At the end of the day, the one who is going to win will be the one with the antidote from Nikolai, and that could still be Dazai.

This is probably the most serious we’ve ever seen Dazai for a prolonged period of time. And it’s not even because he’s focused on saving his own life in order to escape the prison.

It’s because he’s focused on saving Sigma.

I believe his plan here is to allow Sigma to be reunited with Fyodor and/or Nikolai, but now with the knowledge that they will most likely be planning to kill Sigma by the end of it so no one knows what happened to Dazai. However, the fact of the matter is that the two of them believe Sigma would not try to kill them first, and I don't think he's going to do something like that either. I think Dazai is most likely using Sigma as some kind of distraction for Fyodor and Nikolai while Chuuya comes out of his vampirism. If Chuuya was conscious enough to understand Dazai’s speech in chapt 101, there’s no way he’d sit by while Dazai falls to his death. A lot of people have been pointing out this box in this official art:

Saying that the box looks a lot like the elevator:

Which is a vital component of the prison that Dazai or Fyodor would have to use in order to reach the exit, and the marking on it looks similar to the markings that appear on Chuuya during Corruption. This could be hinting towards Chuuya slowing or stopping the elevator somehow with Dazai inside of it, but I’m not sure how since Dazai would have to not be touching the elevator for that to work, but if the elevator stops while he’s floating in it, it would be no different than him hitting the ground… So I guess we’ll see what happens.

Moving on from the chapters, here’s my thoughts on Dazai’s reaction to Chuuya being at the prison: he’s not shocked, he’s angry. Why? Because he and Ango had probably been planning on how to get him out of the prison for a little while now in order to stop the vampires, and potentially nullify the effects of the page before Fukuchi can write on it a second time. Similar to Dead Apple, Ango probably called on Chuuya in order to do this since he’d be able to get to Meursault the fastest and would have the best chance at protecting himself from the vampires along the way. So then, how did he get infected? Well, we already know how loyal he is to the Mafia, so he could have been protecting Mori from the vampiric Mafia members and eventually got overwhelmed. As far as we know, there isn’t a single human member anymore (besides maybe Mori), meaning Chuuya would have had to fend off potentially hundreds upon hundreds of vampires dead set on biting Mori in order to cripple the Mafia entirely and remove the threat of Mori’s ability and intelligence coming to the aid of the ADA. Meaning instead of going to Meursault of his own will in order to nab Dazai and leave, he was forced to break in and aid Fyodor under the influence of the vampire virus. Another option was he was simply not working and had no idea the Mafia was infected, as he's not wearing his typical executive attire, he's in something similar to his 15 outfit, making me think he was either going to one of the Mafia's bunkers (Verlaine's, perhaps?) on Mori's orders because he is an executive, or he just was on his day off and suddenly found himself surrounded by familiar vampire faces.

This would explain why Dazai said there’s only one option in there being an intruder in the prison, because he was already waiting for Chuuya to arrive that day to initiate his escape. That is why he told Fyodor it’s about time to figure out which one of them is going to die, because it should have been Fyodor, meaning Fyodor would have been taken out of the ‘game’ while Dazai continued playing, but now alongside everyone else back in Japan. But this didn’t happen, and now Dazai has to change his entire plan on the fly just like Fyodor is doing, taking away any upper hand he would have had with Chuuya.

106.5 also isn’t the first time we’ve seen the words ‘I leave the rest to you’. We saw it in Dead Apple, for what it’s worth, coming from Ango when he sent Chuuya to his potential death to save Dazai. The second time we see it is in Beast, just before Dazai replicates the season 1 opening scene, those are his final words to Atsushi and Akutagawa, before he falls to his death. Does this foreshadow Dazai dying or being fatally injured? I don’t know, but I don’t think so. Killing such a major character in this situation would be somewhat out of left field if it’s Dazai, since he seems to be getting some character development with Sigma in the prison. However, he has pretty limited options here:

Chuuya, if he is no longer under the vampire’s influence, could slow the elevator’s fall like a lot have been predicting because of the official art hint, and the trend of Chuuya bailing Dazai out of situations like this. Dazai might also be able to jump out of the elevator if the doors are still open enough and land on a floor like he pushed Sigma on to, or grab the rungs on the wall of the elevator shaft that some have pointed out. Another option, in my opinion, is to stay in the elevator, because as we saw set up at the beginning of the Gogol Game, the elevators only go between two levels, meaning he would only be falling down one level instead of four. Depending on how much space is between levels, he might be able to survive inside the elevator with minor injuries if he braces himself against the floor of the elevator and prays it doesn’t collapse in on him when it hits the bottom of the elevator shaft. I also toyed with the idea that he could shove the elevator using his body weight and tilt it in order to scrape against either side of the shaft and slow the fall, but given he pushes off the wall to save Sigma and it does nothing to the elevator itself, I’m going to assume the elevator is too heavy for him to tilt like that. However, Chuuya could accomplish a similar feat by hitting the outside of the elevator with the help of a little gravity manipulation, so it’s still possible he could save Dazai. However, what I’m more interested in seeing is how the relationship between Dazai and Chuuya changes after these events… With Dazai now really showing how much he’s changed and developed as a character, and what effect those developments will have on skk going forward.

Anyway, those are all of my current thoughts on the matter! Holy crap this post took forever to finish for some reason BUT it’s done now and until we get a new chapter (in like a week) I don’t have to make my brain hurt mulling over how elevator physics works :’)

Idk if this will make you feel better but my grandmother is exactly like you, she thought she’d be dead by 18, 25, then 30 so on and so forth, now she’s 106!! she might have killed her abusive ex-husband back in the 1960s but besides that, she’s doing great!

Thats awesome, she sounds like she has some good stories. I was one of those people that didnt plan for my future much cuz i thought i was gonna kill myself for a few years but thats like everyone on here so. Now i think im gonna die from a horse related injury or falling off a roof. Kind of fine with it like life is fun but i dont know ive made my peace with it. Better than dying in a boring way i guess.

Synopsis: When Teachers at UA notice that you’re on your period, how do they react?

Aizawa Shota

Aizawa will probably realize you’re not acting like yourself when you enter the classroom

He’ll notice you look a bit more tired and you’re participating less

At first, he puts it up to just a bay day or burnout

But he’s observant so he’ll probably notice after a bit whether it’s because you have a stain on your pants or he realizes your holding your stomach

He’ll ask you to stay after class and then he’ll pull out a basket of period products, snacks/candy, and extra bottoms that Midnight gave out to all the teachers

He’ll let you stay in his class for a bit and he’ll write you a late pass to your next class

He’s a veteran teacher so he knows what to do and he knows it’s normal so he just stays like his normal self

You sighed in relief. You were about to doze off but you didn’t want to fall asleep during class. You put your head down and drifted away until the bell rang.

You lifted your head up in confusion. “Huh?”

“It’s the end of class. We’re going to English now,” Jiro told you.

“Oh, thanks,” you mumbled in response.

As you stood up, Aizawa-sensei looked at you. Then he looked at your chair. Huh, you thought to yourself. Weird.

“Y/n, please sit down. I need to talk to you,” he announced.

“Oh- ok,” you sat back down in your chair as Aizawa-sensei opened up a drawer in his desk. Great, you were in trouble.

Aizawa rustled through the drawer and pulled out a small basket. He walked up to you and placed it on your desk. “You bled through your pants. Please feel free to take whatever you need and stay after class. I can write you a pass to the nurse if you need as well.”

“Ah, thank you very much.” You looked at the basket, grabbing the things you needed and went to the bathroom.

When you came back, Aizawa-sensei was snoozing at his desk.

“Uh, Aizawa-sensei?”

He looked up from his nap. You placed the basket on his desk.

“Thank you very much,” you said, bowing.

“Here.” He handed you a slip of paper. “It’s a late pass.”

You bowed once again and made your way to English class.

Yagi Toshinori

He probably won’t notice weird behavior or anything like that

He’ll see you have blood on your pants/skirt and he’ll think you’re dying or something

But, you’ll just awkwardly explain it to him and he’ll be like ohhhhh

He lost his basket from Midnight, so he tells you to stop by her classroom on the way to the bathroom

“Ah, yes. Hold on though.” He looked around to make sure no one was looking and pulled out a basket of period products. You looked at him, shocked.

“Thank you,” you said as you dipped your head and beelined to the bathroom.

She immediately notices when she sees you

She’s been a teacher for a while now and can just tell

Hi, I've seen some people suggest that JGY killed Jin furen ( even though the novel doesn't say anything that supports it). I know she abused him and it wouldn't be totally out of character, but it always seemed like dumping yet another crime on him because "he's evil". I wonder if this accisation has any ground to stand on

Mmmm. Not really, no.

This is what we have about Madam Jin's death:

After Madam Jin lost her only son and her daughter-in-law, she’d been quite depressed for a few years in the first place. Thinking that her husband had to fool around even when he was dying and finally fooled his life away, she was so angered that she fell ill as well, eventually passing away.

(ER, ch 85)

Given this, is it possible he killed Madam Jin? Certainly. And I will say in defense of the idea that it's a lot less out of character then the vast majority of things he's accused of. You're right that she abused him, including physically, and contributed to the general shittiness of that part of his life at Jinlintai; I think she's probably on the second-lowest level of the harm pyramid, though nearer to the top, and if he did some reason he really had to kill her I think he'd find some satisfaction in it.

But I do think he'd need a reason. I do understand where you're coming from in saying it wouldn't be totally out of character, but he really almost never kills just for revenge! There's usually a very pragmatic reason for it, and he's usually under serious constraint.

Of course the usually in that sentence is doing some work, because there's the obvious exception of JGS. But JGS' case was really exceptional. I mean, first of all, it's worth remembering that JGS' death is singular among the deaths we know JGY is responsible for. Just want to highlight the text there because I do feel like that fact is pretty important. Second, there are reasons he'd react to JGS differently from anyone else: JGS is by far the most responsible for JGY's misery and his mother's death and doesn't give a single flying fig about him despite being his father—a relationship too which is singular and important. Oh and we can't forget his responsibility for the fact that JGY married his own damn sister! And these reasons don't extend to Madam Jin. And then—and this part is the most immediately compelling to me—if you look at the way JGY actually reacts while talking about him, in the temple, vs the way he reacts when talking about basically anything else—it's so singular and so focused purely on JGS! There's even that line:

He finally revealed the hatred hidden deep within him. It wasn’t directed at neither Jin ZiXuan nor Wei WuXian, but rather his own father.

(ER, ch 106)

I think it would significantly weaken things if this reaction was stretched to include Madam Jin, and I honestly just really can't imagine it.

So basically—there's not really anything for it in the text. I think you're right that it's mostly a matter of the unfortunately frequent logic of JGY does bad things, this would be a bad thing to do, therefore JGY did it. With some extra irony added on top, that if it was a character they liked who killed someone who'd treated them the way Madam Jin treated JGY, they'd count it as a good thing without blinking an eye.

Do you think anime today are made with too many safety nets? Like gone are the days where something experimental or risky (risky in terms of something not seen before)

Yes but I think it's also a ratio thing.

In the entirety of the 80s, 256 were released. In 2022 ALONE 106 anime were released. There is a VAST amount more anime released today, and as a result, a good majority of it is extremely "safe" from a business point of view.

However I think the biggest culprit for this is simply one of money. 1980s Japan was going through an INSANE economic boom. On top of this, the "Straight to VHS" market hit the scene in 1983, which enabled anime to be able to show things which were technically illegal for Japanese broadcasting. Because straight to video anime were not technically broadcasted. This is why OVA from this time period tend to be as hyper-violent and sexual as they are. It was the first time anime actually had the medium in which it could show those things and this new freedom had many anime studios go to an extreme just to explore these new possibilities.

These days, anime animators are paid less than what's considered the legal minimum wage in Japan. But because anime is such a huge profit for Japan, the Japanese government overlooks the breaking of worker's rights. Animators in japan have not had a wage increase since the late 90s, and many of the artists who work on animation make about $400 to $500 a month. While also being expected to live in Tokyo (one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in) and essentially work 24/7 to make deadline. It's reaching a point where, because the people funding anime do NOT want to spend more money but their animators are actively dying from being overworked, have started outsourcing the animation part of anime to overseas studios like the Philippines because they don't have to pay as much. Or their NEW fun little tactic which is to hire amatuer animators off twitter from young kids who REALLY want to work in anime as their dream who are easier to exploit and misuse because they are young, inexperienced, passionate and naive. WATCH OUT FOR THIS. It's becoming more common.

Most larger anime shows also know their main money won't come from broadcast or even blu-ray sales (although Blu-ray sales are EXTREMELY important as far as an anime's success goes) the REAL money comes from merchandise sales or a push of sales in gacha games that are tied to the anime in question. Basically the way Pokemon works at this point. Where the games only exist to justify the existence of merchandise.

So the producers of anime want shows that they know will translate well into merchandise sales. The big merchandise target which these companies like tend to be men aged 18 - 25 who don't yet have families of their own. Because they tend to have a lot more disposable income. However, as things have changed and shows like Sailor Moon have proven, women are also willing to spend large amounts of money on merch. But due to the social structure of Japan, statistically women are less likely to spend the same amount of money because society pressures them more to work towards starting families and focusing their money on building households. (something Japan itself puts extreme pressure on especially with their declining birthrate but even before this just through their traditional family values).

This is why if you compare the amount of shoujo and Josei anime that come out per year versus the amount of Shounen and Seinen anime, it's not even CLOSE in numbers. And what shows MIGHT appeal to women just as men tend to still have cute girls in them to push figurine sales.

It's created an extremely hostile environment where artists simply do not have the means to actually be creative because they are being bled dry for no money.

BUT, because of the sheer number of anime that release per year, it IS more likely to have hidden gems come out made by people who genuinely have a great passion for what they make. It's just that before these would be the anime that outshines everybody else, but because there is just SO MUCH shovelware anime, it can be a little harder to see in the crowd of 5000 isekai and gacha anime.

The industry is not in a great place right now in terms of a creative environment. But it doesn't mean quality isn't there. It's just the quality anime won't be the "biggest" anime of the season or the most talked about or the one you see the most merch for.

Except for Mob Psycho 100. MP100 is GENUINELY one of the best anime to come out in the last 10 years. It uses experimental mixed media in its animation, the animation itself is top tier, and its story and characters are extremely unique for the anime medium.

ALSO! there is an anime coming out for one of my favourite current running manga "Kaiju No. 8". Monster Number 8 is part of a new breed of manga that's part of a branch of Shounen Jump called "Jump+". Shounen Jump has for DECADES demanded its manga writers provide a chapter PER WEEK for publishing. Similarly to anime, this bleeds manga artists dry and leaves them often with debilitating health conditions due to overwork (I have a manga by Satoshi Kon where he talks about getting Jaundice while making the comic due to overwork).

Jump+ on the otherhand works differently. The manga do NOT update per week but have larger gaps between updates with short breaks sometimes by the artists.

AND GUESS WHAT???

IT MEANS THE QUALITY OF THE MANGA HAVE GONE UP!

WHAT A SHOCK!

Anyway apparently Kaiju No. 8 is getting an anime adaptation and I am extremely excited.

Seriously tho. Kaiju No. 8 is about a 30 something year old dude who works as "monster clean up" which is basically the guys who have to mop up the guts of whatever Kaiju the heroes blew up that week.

until he accidentally becomes exposed to something which gives him the ability to shapeshift into a monster. He reapplies to the Kaiju-fighting division being one year under the cut-off age, an entrance exam he has failed multiple times in the past, but gets in this time (but barely iirc. It's been a while since I read the beginning. (of course if the defense division ever sees him in his monster form they will kill him which is probably not the smartest career move but I mean WHAT ELSE IS HE SUPPOSED TO DO?)

AND THEN THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP HAPPENS.

Where his hero buddies who find out he is also a kaiju have to help him BOTH fight the monsters attacking the city while ALSO keeping his powers a secret from the OTHER officers in the division. Specifically his best friend who then pushes himself to be BETTER at the defense thing specifically so his friend (who's named Kafka by the way because of course) won't transform to protect him and potentially get himself killed by the defense division.

It's so good. Please... I am weak for power of friendship stories....

Everybody protects each other and care about each other so much...

I just hope the anime can get something good out, because already from the sneak peaks we've seen, the quality seems to be the same level of mid most major anime have these days. But hey. At least it's not CG.

Of Skyfall, Sigma, Ian Fleming & James Bond

A personal theory add-on for Skelechuuchuu’s incredible Ian Fleming theory. Please read and give love and support to that original theory here if you have the time!

Hello everyone! At the time of posting this, I’m extremely sick and kinda sleep-deprived right now, so I will probably not be terribly active until I feel better. :’)

Nevertheless, after having a small chat (with a lot of breaks in between :’)) with some cool people in a BSD server, I still wanted to come and drop this little add-on to the recent (and extremely compelling) theory that dropped about Sigma being Ian Fleming (and James Bond-inspired).

As I tend to do best, I wanted to analyze and explain why Skyfall is not only a perfect and crucial choice for the episode name in S4 as OP describes above due to the inseverable tie to James Bond, but also how the lyrics to the tie-in Bond song by this name themselves relate perfectly to Sigma and the events of BSD involving him so far.

I’ll place it below the cut for both S4 spoilers and manga spoilers up to Chapter 106-107 or so! Proceed with caution if you’re worried about spoilers!

Now, without further ado, let’s get to lyric analyzing!

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of analyzing the song lyric by lyric, allow me to start with a more generalized observation:

The overarching theme of the song Skyfall, apart from being obviously intrinsically linked to Bond (given it was made for it), is about bravely facing down the end with those you love, come what may; this is a perfect fit for Sigma, whose whole character is wrapped up in the concept of needing to belong and protect those he loves. In the episode of the same name, he even fights, despite knowing he is “just an ordinary man”, with his whole life to protect his beloved people in the Casino, unafraid of dying because living without them would be meaningless.

(I would also like to note here that at first glance, it might seem to be written almost like a love song, but I feel it’s important to distinguish — especially in the context of this theory — that this is not necessarily the case, and there is one line that upon listening to it, especially seems to almost completely confirm otherwise to me; in the song, it sounds like Adele is saying “all your loving arms”, despite many lyric sites and such claiming otherwise (it is really not uncommon for artists to differ from the original written lyrics from time to time in certain recordings, so I find this rather plausible). Nevertheless, whether or not this is actually correct, the song is ambiguous enough that it can still be taken however one wishes, and I believe that if we apply it to Sigma, the song is not directed towards one person, but towards a group of them.)

I’ll get on to the more intricate stuff of analyzing lyric by lyric in a moment, but before I do I would just like to make one little key statement here before we start, and that is that despite how it seems, I don’t actually believe most of this song was meant to be applied to the casino or the people there; rather, I believe it largely reflects and is about his feelings towards Dazai, Atsushi, and the ADA as a whole. (Again, I’ll explain this more in a bit, but…there is one particular set of lyrics that truly sets this up for me: “Skyfall is where we start”; obviously, Sigma has had his casino and known the people in it for awhile, from his perspective, but do you know who he does meet in the episode Skyfall, and first starts to find some small measure of hope/consolation in? Atsushi. The ADA.)

Okay, with that in mind, now let’s on to the main bit!

This is the end Hold your breath and count to ten

In the most recent chapters, Dazai and Sigma are trapped underwater, and literally have to hold their breath to survive. As he runs out of air, Sigma is counting the moments until he can resurface, but fears it may not happen because Dazai seems determined to stop him (for good reason, it turns out)

Feel the Earth move and then Hear my heart burst again

Being with Dazai and having hope of joining the ADA has shifted Sigma’s world around him, changing his worldview and making his heart explode with genuine hope at all of the kind deeds they’ve performed for him — especially when he realizes Dazai is not trying to kill him by keeping him underwater but protect him.

For this is the end I've drowned and dreamt this moment

As they’re staying under the water and near out of air to share, Sigma almost fully accepts his fate, thinking to himself that he may die this way, but at least he was able to dream of a beautiful life for once in those few precious moments he shared with the ADA.

So overdue, I owe them

Sigma has waited a long time to have a place to permanently belong and feel loved and cared for, and he feels indebted to the Agency for all they’ve done for him — all their acts of kindness.

Swept away, I'm stolen

When Dazai was given a chance to pick something to take with him in Mersault, he stole Sigma from the DOA completely, and this action also sweeps Sigma away with surprise, hope, and gratitude inside.

Let the sky fall When it crumbles We will stand tall Face it all together

This one is probably pretty self-explanatory; Sigma isn’t afraid of death, as long as he stands with the ADA in hope of a good life, though this attitude also perfectly fits his attitude towards the Casino in the Skyfall ep and how he stood with his people against the Hunting Dogs, unafraid to die for them.

I already went over this one a bit, but Skyfall is the ep where he and Atsushi (and by extension the ADA) meet for the first time; it’s his start with knowing the ADA — the time when he first experiences true hope that doesn’t involve him being used and discarded in the end.

A thousand miles and poles apart

I think this part is kinda metaphorical to how he at first thinks he and the ADA are on opposite sides, and that they care nothing for him besides forcing him to use his ability; in his eyes, they are worlds apart and he could never even get close to their world of light.

Where worlds collide and days are dark

Yet, in that moment of Atsu trying to save him, Sigma begins to feel they’re not so far apart, after all.

Their worlds collided in that brief moment, on one of his darkest days, and he felt grateful for that, even though he still felt his fate was sealed and that he had to let go of Atsu’s hand to prevent him from tumbling to his death with him.

You may have my number, you can take my name But you'll never have my heart

I believe this would be directed at everyone else whom had used and abused him up until this point, and, from his perspective, took his memory from him; they can take everything from him, own him, rob him of his true identity, etc., but he will never be one of them. He’ll never truly be a terrorist. His heart belongs in the light — with the ADA; he realizes that now.

Where you go, I go What you see, I see

As a member of the server we were in, Cloudii, pointed out, I think this could be a reference to how similar Sigma sees himself to Atsushi and vice versa, but I think it could also be a reference to his willingness to follow the ADA (both literally and metaphorically) and with the last line, his ability to gain knowledge of someone else’s knowledge (and thereby in a limited way experiences) through touch.

I know I'd never be me Without the security [Of] All your loving arms Keeping me from harm Put your hand in my hand And we'll stand

The lines about “put your hand in my hand, and we’ll stand” in particular strongly remind me of the moment when Atsu tries to save Sigma by holding his hand when he dangled off the casino, and reflects both Atsu’s desire to have him keep holding on and pull him to solid ground, and Sigma’s desire to stand by the ADA and repay them for kindness by using his ability for them right before what he believes will be his death.

That being said, I also think this whole set of lyrics above matches Sigma’s attitude towards the ADA and his determination to stand by them now in general, even in the most dire of times.

He knows that he’ll never get to be who he wants to be and live the life he wants to live, having a place of belonging, an identity, people who love him genuinely, if he doesn’t learn to put his faith in them and trust that they are different from the rest of those who had him before. The ADA seems to love and protect him and so he’ll do his best, ordinary as he feels he is, to stand by them, too, until his last breath — using his ability and whatever else he may have as necessary, as they face down the end of the world as they know it and those who would bring it about together.

Moon Eight - Frostcreep

Sedgeclan has no Deputy!

Coniferstar and Snowstreak find a dead cat by the thunderpath while on patrol. Harebolt has an encounter with a Starclan cat. Clan Rule Established: No cat of Sedgeclan is permitted to cross the southern border.

“He’s lying to you,” A voice says, from over Harebolt’s shoulder. Harebolt turns, bristling. Did every strange cat she came across have to sneak up behind her to start a conversation? “You could start with ‘hello'.”

The cat who’d spoken laughs; a stranger to her, though Harebolt knows most of the rogues and loners of the tundra, at least in passing. A thick-furred black tom, with bright, glittering green eyes. Young– but big, for a loner, and well-muscled. In the early, Frostcreep night, his fur looks almost silver; brushed paler by the waxing moon. He blinks a greeting to her. “Hello, then. I’m sorry. But there isn’t very much time.” Harebolt frowns. “Why not? Why does every tom I meet lately speak in riddles?” He dips his head, apologetic. “I don’t mean to. I’m only passing on a message.” “From who?” Harebolt’s fur bristles. “You’re not with Boss? I’m not alone, you know. I have a clan to back me.” And that is a nice thing, about their strange new lives. That she can say, I’ve got backup, and can mean it.

But the stranger shakes his head. “No– no. Harebolt. My name is Rookpaw. I came to find your leader. But I–” Harebolt shivers. “How do you know–” An owl stoops, suddenly, some hare-leaps away, a shadow dropping from the sky. A rabbit shrieks, as its talons strike home. Harebolt swings around to look; her claws unsheathing. An embarrassing, instinctual display. A cloud, drifting over the moon, plunges the tundra back into darkness, and hides the owl from her sight. Harebolt can still hear the wet, messy sounds of it eating, smell blood drifting in on the wind. She shakes herself, irritated, and turns back to face the stranger- Rookpaw. But he’s nowhere to be seen. Harebolt blinks. The wide, Frostcreep tundra sprawls around her, its reds and golds all washed to silver, in the night. Harebolt’s spine prickles; she glances up, uneasy, some dread in her like a hunted thing. She hears, again, the sound of the rabbit, dying; a high, red scream, in the dark. A black cat could hide, easily, in the undergrowth, with the moon covered as it is. But… She scents the air. Salt, blowing in from distant waters. The fragrant, last-ditch blooms of sedgegrass, and of shrub. No cat-scent except her own. Shivering hard, in the chill of a sudden wind, Harebolt turns tail, and flees for home.

When she arrives, Snowstreak and Coniferstar are already back from patrol, their heads bent close together. They both startle, as she bursts into camp, whipping around to face her. Snowstreak’s pelt is bristling, just like Harebolt’s; her shoulders, too, have an uneasy set. Harebolt pauses, collecting herself. Studies the other cats. “Is everything– alright?” Snowstreak doesn’t answer, right away, but moves to press her forehead into Harebolt’s chest, trembling a little. Harebolt breathes out a sigh, and licks Snowstreak’s ear, forcing out a comforting purr. She always felt bigger– stronger, when Snowstreak leaned on her like this. The strangeness of her earlier encounter fades away. “It’s okay,” she says, gently. “You’re fine.” “Your mate and I just had a bit of a scare, out on patrol.” Coniferstar’s expression is warm, watching them. “I find myself a little shaken, too.” Harebolt blinks at him, gratefully- nothing wrong with Snowstreak, then. Snowstreak speaks up, finally, though she stays tucked up against Harebolt’s shoulder. “I wasn’t hurt, or anything. But– there was a cat. By the road, I mean. When we were out.” “The thunderpath,” Coniferstar says– a gentle correction. Another of those strange, clan-cat words. “He had been struck. We weren’t swift enough to help him.” Harebolt looks up to meet his eyes; he looks… troubled. But when he catches her looking, his expression flattens out; wiped clean, like sand smoothed as a wave recedes. “It’s silly,” Snowstreak says, sniffling. Harebolt blinks, and turns back to her mate, pressing in closer. “I know– I didn’t even know him. I just–” “No,” Harehold says, soothingly; though her pelt prickles, with some instinctual unease. “It isn’t. I’m sorry that happened.” “Me too,” Coniferstar says, quietly. “The land that way is dangerous– my friends. I think it best if no one ventures to that thunderpath again.” Harebolt’s ears twitch back. “The southern one? By that human’s place, the–” “Twoleg,” Snowstreak says. “That’s– what they’re called, isn’t it?” “Twoleg,” Harebolt echoes, after a moment, a strange weight settling in her stomach. “I gather raspberries by there. The… twoleg grows them. In his garden.” Coniferstar’s eyes sharpen, just for a moment. Harebolt blinks; had their leader spotted her? That day, a few moons back, when she’d seen him out by the trailer? But he only ducks his head, after a beat, contrite. “I know it won’t be easy. But I believe this is a sign; Starclan sent this cat to us– to me. As a message.” I’ve come to find your leader, that strange cat had said. A cold wind slithers in, between the boundary rocks, and goes right through Harebolt’s fur. I’m passing on a message. “The only thing that comes that way is danger.” Coniferstar sighs. “I’m afraid the risk is just– too great. From this day on; no Sedgeclan cat will be permitted to venture that far south. I regret that this... stranger had to die, in order to pass on the warning. But– from all frosts, a thaw.” "Yeah," Snowstreak says, her voice still a little shaky, “I’m just glad it wasn’t one of you.” She pulls away from Harebolt, and bumps her forehead, gently, against Coniferstar’s shoulder. Their leader purrs, and leans into her touch. And Harebolt’s pelt feels cold, in her sudden absence.

Hi! I know this is going to sound weird. Would you like to create something like a cheat sheet against attacks batjokes antis (co-authored or maybe it's more convenient for you to work alone)? I often see batjokes newcomers being bullied massively on any platform, especially if they are just getting acquainted with comics and can't navigate them like lightning. For example, they do not know that if you give an example of alternative universes, these batjokes relations are devalued and are not considered canon. They don't know what to say when an opponent says that Bruce has no feelings for the Joker (for example, the same understanding, some sympathy), except hatred and a desire to kill. I don't like conflicts, and often I can just block a person if he himself comes to me and tries to impose on me that my picture is wrong. But I see other people's desire to discuss, to defend what they like. Especially newcomers, because no one has sown a grain of doubt in them yet (and, to be honest, one of the reasons why I am writing to you is just the unwillingness for this spark of obsession with batjokes to go out in them). So I thought maybe this ship needs one collection of counterarguments? For example, the argument "batjokes is not a canon, because it has never been in the main wounds", the counterargument "a list of the main runs and a brief explanation of what is happening", Or, for example, the argument "saving the Joker is exclusively a code", the counterargument "examples with Bruce's desire to fix the Joker or just understanding him, the similarity of their destinies, sympathy." In general, the list here is large. I have been thinking about such a cheat sheet for a long time, but I am not a native speaker and often have problems with objectivity. For example, I often see arguments along the lines of "The Joker doesn't like Batman, flirting is to unsettle him." Will it be a counterargument that the Joker talks about loving Batman, even when no one is around, when there is no one to mislead (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #106)? Or, for example, would it be an argument in defense of the fact that it's not about the code and Bruce needs the Joker vitally, a mention of the transmitter that was in the Joker's pocket and which only had to be searched for before resurrecting him (Legends of the Dark Knight #144-145). The Joker wasn't dying by Batman's hand. The code is not broken. At the same time, Bruce says that the only reason is that he had no choice, he had to find Ra's al Ghul, but in fact the choice was: to act like a detective and find clues, the same transmitter. In general, it is difficult. I love your analysis of comics. It seems to me that there is no more objective view of what is happening in the fandom, and if the cheat sheet came out from under whose hand, it would be from under yours. But I don't want to impose myself, after all, such a collection requires a lot of time and effort. So don't worry if you're not interested.

Hi! No worries, I don't mind the message. It's nice of you to want something like this for new fans so as to help them not lose their interest in the ship. Unfortunately, I really don't think I have the time to create an Excel sheet of the scale you're suggesting. I do intend to create a masterpost of the more common Batjokes questions I get and my meta, which are all based on comics. Perhaps that post could serve as help for those interested in backing up their canon arguments of Batjokes. I'll try to tag you when I get around to it.

However... [deep sigh] alright, I can't help elaborating a bit. I understand the feeling of indignation and the need to defend the ship when attacked, especially if you are new to it. And I imagine you're talking about platforms like Twitter and TikTok especially, where the kind of anti-Batjokes stance you're describing is a lot more rampant. But personally, I find the idea of fighting and arguing with these people utterly exhausting. No one needs to prove the basis of their ship with receipts, argue for its existence in comics in excruciating detail. Hell, shipping doesn't need canon support. Fandom is transformative, and this recent approach to shipping where people fight and argue over what's more "canon" is hard to understand, to me. Not to mention how nonsensical this morality-based approach to characters and shipping is.

Being in fandom is not supposed to be a fight. You're not supposed to come from what's likely a stressful real life and then stress some more arguing on the internet with strangers over a fictional ship and fictional characters. The vast majority of the time, these antis are quite young too-- teenagers deadset on hating on any kind of "toxic" or "problematic" ship. Presenting them with logical arguments based on canon isn't going to do much. I've seen it happen more than once; Batjokes fans bringing in real support to their arguments which then got willfully misunderstood or mocked, in the absence of a counterargument. Antis are not looking to be convinced, they're not looking to understand the ship they're attacking. They're looking to raise themselves in the eyes of other antis by virtue-signalling, and to get satisfaction from asserting their perceived moral superiority over others. These are wholly emotional goals, and the chance of bringing rational arguments to someone who's driven by this kind of motivation and changing their mind is small (and not worth the time and stress of putting yourself through it).

My opinion is that the best way to deal with these people is to block them and not engage. What they want is attention, and witnessing the distress of the fans they are attacking. Not giving them the platform and the attention they want is for the best. I'm not saying not to engage in any sort of debate or discussion about comics as long as it's polite and not ill-intentioned, I've done it myself and I quite like having talks of the sort. But it's right there in the name; antis literally define themselves by a thing they hate. Reason is clearly not what they're looking for.
