Tumblr media
I got this ask on main but thought I'd pick it up here, my comics history/fashion ramble blog. I'd been wondering this exact same thing recently, and Google initially wasn't much help—Rocketeer replica jackets describe themselves only as "Rocketeer jackets" and the one Lobster Johnson cosplay thread just suggested ordering one of those.
Tumblr media
The most curious part is the double seam and horizonal row of buttons that mark out the entire front as possibly being an unbuttonable "bib", like a plastron front. (Please don't ask how late in the game I worked out that "plastron" is the right word for that.)
The closest genuine Golden Age example of a plastron jacket I found was the military tunic style uniform of Blackhawk, created in 1941.
Tumblr media
(Pics from the '52 movie serial (right) really show how awkward it is to combine open lapels + plastron. On a double breasted coat, that chest panel IS the bottom lapel, folded shut.)
Here's the thing: This outfit mirrors that of the Nazi ace pilot he fights in the origin issue, von Tepp (middle). And compare further to the far right: real life WWI flying ace Manfred von Richthofen, AKA the Red Baron, in imperial German Uhlan (lance cavalry) uniform.
Tumblr media
"The Germans had designed such great costumes, we decided to use them ourselves," co-creator Cuidera is quoted as saying in Steranko's History of Comics, which (more dubiously, in my opinion) compares the look to the Gestapo or SS. Breeches or jodhpurs weren't strictly a Nazi thing at the time, but they do add to the overall effect.
Compare two other military tunic themed costumes from 1940, on Captain Marvel and Bucky Barnes. These are asymmetrically buttoned, and switch to a more classic circus strongman look below the waist.
Tumblr media
But somewhere around 1975, with the Invaders book, Bucky gets a buttoned bib! There's something infectious about it—the symmetry, maybe. (Even re: the characters we started with; Mignola didn't draw Lobster Johnson with buttons down the right side, but every artist after does. And Spider-Noir wore a sweater under his coat until Shattered Dimensions introduced the double-breasted vest.)
If it didn't reach his belt, Barnes' button-on front + shirt collar combo would resemble a bib-front western shirt, like the one that became the Rawhide Kid's signature look in '56. (Or Texas Twister's in '76.)
Tumblr media
This shirt entered the old-West-obsessed public imagination in the 1940s/50s largely because John Wayne wore it in several cowboy movies. In reality it was rare among cowboys, more common with firefighters and civil war era militia.
Military tunics, Western shirts, alright, but does anything match the style and material and era, or are these jackets a total anachronism? I tried looking into 1930s leather flight jackets and was surprised when the closest-looking results were marked as Luftwaffe.
It took me a bit to work out why: USAF and RAF issued standard flight jackets with a center closure. The Luftwaffe instead let their pilots buy non-standardized ones. The 'weird' double-breasted black German flight jackets were in fact fairly normal (but repurposed) motorcycle racing jackets.
Tumblr media
Far left is an English biker's jacket that dates back to the 1920s. Even without the bib, this may be as close as you'll get to an authentic Rocketeer. The jodhpurs were pretty common to complete the look. (What was an early motorcycle anyways, if not a weird metal horse?) The first biker jacket with the now iconic off-center diagonal zip was designed in America in 1928 and yet as far as I can tell, not a single actual pre-war pulp hero wore one.
The greatest weakness of this post is that I haven't been able to find any of these artists' notes on how, exactly, they arrived at similar versions of this iconic Pulp Front Panel Jacket. I'm sure I've missed some things. But as far as I can tell, this jacket is an odd bit of convergent stylistic evolution from the above influences that's picked up enough momentum to now be self-perpetuating.
Tumblr media
The problem with pulp heroes is that for the most part, they just wore clothes. The appeal of this jacket is actually very similar to what the 1940s thought the appeal of the bib-front shirt in westerns was: It's alien enough to feel "old". It looks like something invented before zippers or synthetic fabrics. It looks formal and militant but also renegade, rebellious. It also looks a little mad-sciencey*. It's a costume, but you can nearly fool yourself into thinking the past was weird enough that you could find something this cool on the rack.
If I wanted to end on some grand point, I could try to argue that there's a thematic throughline between fascist fashion, John Wayne movies, and throwback pulp. A manufactured aesthetic valorizing the violence of a fictional golden age... but I think the noir stylings of the post-Rocketeer comics in this lineup mean that, at least on some level, they know the "good guys" didn't dress like this.
*If I had another couple weeks of time to burn, I'd try to trace the visual history of the Howie coat in popular culture and investigate its possible connections to this. Alas, I do actually have a life.

I’m not saying that CE as an actor can’t be critiqued or that you can’t be disappointed in his role choices or dislike a movie he is in but I don’t understand why so many people in the fandom (or people who claim to be fans) constantly say he’s bad at what he does or hasn’t got the talent.
He clearly does. Of course he’s a handsome white man which definitely would have helped him, but the guy can act.
He has had some rocky patches but none of us can claim to know how/why he chooses certain films. When he experiments he is always great and I think it’s overlooked a lot of the time but Captain America is actually a very hard character to get right. He also spent a lot of his career being type cast.
I’m not saying we have to pour one out for the man but can we just stop ragging on every single thing about him at the moment.
(I’m not accusing you of doing this I just think it is wide spread across the fandom and when we aren’t ragging on him for the relationship situation we are ragging his career. Can we not just have some fun and literally talk about ANYTHING ELSE…at least half of the time? You’re a safe space that’s why I came to you)
I definitely understand what you say. I don't agree with this whole situation, whether it's PR or real, but I also don't agree when people, for example, body shame him or make disgusting comments about his appearance. I'd say the same goes for his work. I really try to separate him as an actor from him as a person. It's still hard for me to do because I've loved his characters because of him, and while I don't agree with whatever this is, a lot of his projects are my favorites, and I love watching them after a long day. But at the same time, I don't want to support someone who married someone like Alba, but I've been excited for PH, for example, so yeah, it's a hard thing to decide, and I think a lot of people feel the same way.
I'm obviously against everything Alba and her friends stand for, but it's hard for me to “let him go” and to imagine he is like them.
I agree that he is a great actor, and I think he has rage. He played very different characters very well, and I agree that playing Captain America is not that easy, and he did an amazing job.
He had a few not-that-great projects, for example, "Playing It Cool," but all in all, I think he had really great ones.
The problem is that most people are really disappointed in him, and not a lot of people want to talk about his projects or how excited they are about his newer ones. When I tried to talk about something else, people accused me of being racist and antisemitic just because I said something good about him.
And to be honest, most people aren't even excited after everything. They don't want to see his movies; they don't care about him. There are a lot of people who are only here to see how this whole thing ends, and that's it. He's lost a lot of fans, and I don't think it's because he is married or not, or who knows, but because of Alba and his friends.
I understand why people are disappointed or why people don't want to support him anymore, but sometimes I feel like people are too cruel to him. Call me anything you want; maybe it's just my stupidity or the faith that I still have in him, but I can't and won't ever say bad things about his hair, teeth, or body, or call him talentless. I know I said he doesn't look that healthy and seems like things have taken a toll on his mental health, but it was just me expressing my concerns.

I am not really tripping off the Anthony Mackie video. He was not rude like others are trying to paint him. My issue lies with the double standards. If their fave white actor did the same thing then you would not hear a peep out of anyone. Mackie is a private person but i do think his PR needs to talk to him on how to handle these kind of situations especially since his movie comes out next year. More and ppl and going to want their pic taken with him.
Hi Anon!! Agreed! They would have praised him for "setting healthy boundaries". At first, when I saw the tweets I thought he was being extra rude or something. But he said no in a respectful way and tone and the video isn't too long but from what I understood the grandma asked several times, she kept insisting.
That being said, I'm really not a fan of actors refusing to take pictures with kids. I get that it can create a group effect as you mentionned but kids consume media in a different way and relate to celebrities more than adults do (at lease most adults lol) but you never know how this kid saw it. Maybe he didn't care or maybe he thought his favorite superhero didn't want to take a picture with him. There are dedicated spaces and events for fan interactions bit it's not like everyone can effort to go to Disneyland/World to meet the Avengers or to attend fan conventions.
Adults are able to understand stuff and move on, especially when it involves celebrities but this could create a bad memory for that kid and seeing the Captain America movies could be bottersweet from now on (this is my speculation, maybe the kid didn't even care at all).
I agree 100% with everything you wrote, I just wanted to add some thoughts and also the part about having a strategy with his PR team.
I think that it's not easy for people to figure out what to do because some celebrities don't mind taking pictures with fans, some even like it, and some don't like it, and you can't actually know until you asked them.
I saw some people on Twitter say that she should have know better because it's a known fact that Anthony doesn't like taking pictures with people, but to people who don't use twitter, it isn't a known fact. I would even say that for Twitter users who don't follow Marvel stuff, it isn't a known fact. How are they supposed to know?
I think the the important thing is to accept if the celebrity says no, respect that and move on. Don't tell them they're rude bc you don't know what it's like being asked to take a picture every day. And don't take a video of them saying no to post it without their consent😭 What for???

“feels like they've been keeping buck and eddie apart in s6 for a reason, even as friends” i agree with this! it really sucks but it does feel like they were separating them even as friends and then the LIs were just the cherry on top
it gives me the same vibes as steve and bucky from captain america? they had THE most romantic lines in winter soldier and a close friendship bordering on family, but then once the ship got big after that, they barely interacted and ultimately steve ended up with peggy
maybe they’re just trying to force people’s realisation that buddie isn’t going to happen. but why do they have to remove/reduce their friendship too?? like i want them to be together, but i’ll accept having just the close friendship/family we’ve had so far. please don’t take that away from me too!! lol
but also? if they’re not doing buddie then it’s purely because of the writers’ opinions (which is bad anyway bc surely you should be making the fans happy) bc if it’s about ratings?? viewers?? most of the viewers are probably there for buddie anyway, or at least would be fine with it. if they don’t do buddie, if anything they will LOSE a huge proportion of viewers bc i know for sure that lots of buddie supporters are losing patience
Well while I mostly agree, we gotta admit that while they kept them separate for most of it we still got some incredibly domestic scenes with Chris and Eddie this season; hanging out and Buck's and him cooking for them... like Eddie literally bundled up Chris and all his stuff so he could do his homework at Buck's place and they could eat together lmao (or maybe Buck picked Chris up from school and Eddie came over later?) and then there was the poker party and the lightning and okay Eddie wasn't in 6x11 that much but that little was meaningful... I feel like their distance was kind of worked into Buck's trauma and how lost in life he's been feeling lately (that was his main story line this season imo trying to find what he wanted out of life, what was the key to happiness)
So now for me the natural continuation would be a breakdown after a row of stupid decions (the donation, Natalia, etc) and his friends and the firefam supporting him through it and ngl Buck should be single at first before dating anyone, let alone someone like Natalia
Unfortunately queerbaiting is a running theme among the Marvel movies and series alike... sadly it's a good strategy to make money on these projects cuz it works and a lot of creative studios and producers have realised this years ago (after Sherlock bbc and Supernatural everyone knew it was a sure money maker)
Also, I said this before but people who are solely watching this show for buddie don't deserve to call themselves fans tbh it's an ensamble show and regardless of buddie going canon or not actual fans will still watch it.
And yeah having queer characters throughout the run of the show kinda ensured that most viewers would be at least neutral if they actually went canon... that being said there wasn't a single male on male kiss on screen during the whole run of the show and we know that homophobes don't mind two women kissing as much as two men so who really knows...

💕, 🥳, 💡, 🔮
💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
Of the fics I consider Finished, I'm shouting out Making the Most of It. REALLY happy with how that came out :)
🥳 Why did you start writing fanfic?
I think I was in 3rd grade, maybe 2nd- I typed "Digimon Stories" into Google and was delighted to find stories about my favorite show. I was so little I didn't totally understand how to navigate websites, and thought you just got 20 random stories every day, so you can imagine my :D when I discovered the "next" button and how to use the search feature lol. I don't remember my first fic exactly, but I wrote it after the movie came out and it was some insane Digimon crack fic lol.
I just really wanted to make up my own stories about my favorite stories, and I've always had an affection for plucky guys I felt got done wrong by fandom and wanted to do better to make people understand why I loved them so much- I wrote fanfic about Davis from Digimon and Boromir from LOTR. The only fic I left up on FFnet was an HP fic that I might port over to AO3 and revise, and maybe finish or at least add authors notes of my outline, because I do mostly like what I had, but for Obvious Reasons have not been super motivated to write for that fandom in recent years lol.
💡How many WIPs do you currently have?
Oooh okay, a lot of things in the hopper, let me categorize:
Actively Working On
Truly unhinged Hawnk fic for kinktober kfkfkfk
The Courage To Be
Star Wars fic 'Resolute'
Actively Pondering/Nibbling On
CharHawk Fake Dating
HouliHawk role play fail
Two age play fics that are similar in tone, one CharHawk and one Hawkahy- not sure if either will get finished, but don't think I'll write both, so pondering options
Hawkeye "turns into a cat" gen fic
Hawkeye Goes To California and BJ Goes To Maine at the same time without telling the other and swap lives for about two weeks.
Two post-war fics, one that is a sequel to Making the Most of It and one that's more focused on Daniel and Hawkeye's relationship, although BJ and Trapper are both there. Pretty distinct, but with enough overlap I need to pick one to prioritize to make sure I don't write too similar of scenes between them.
Soft Hibernation
The next part of my Rescue Bots fic- I know what the next bit will be, touched the doc last month, but not actively working on it
Under the Banner of Heaven case fic/undercover in a gay bar fic. Haven't worked on this in a few months, but I still really like the idea
Hibernation
X-Men Band AU. Been over a year since I worked on it, although I have a pretty good outline for a lot of what needs writing
1920s X Men AU. Soft abandoned, I remember some of my ideas for this but don't think I'll write it.
Succession KenStewy fic. I have some scenes and an outline, but it's hard to get in these assholes (affectionate) POV...
Captain America Clone Fic I haven't touched in almost a decade now god help me. Functionally abandoned but I still think on it occasionally kgkdjdkd.
🔮 Any advice for writers working through burnout or writer’s block?
Keep pondering, keep nibbling, and don't be afraid to shelve an idea and come back to it later. Fanfic is supposed to be for fun after all lfkdjjd
I have found it helpful to make the world's worst outline to act as a kind of checklist document and help connect scenes of I get stuck at one point and need to skip ahead a little.
I also like to try and focus on an emotional vibe to carry the fic, which helps get in the characters head so I can get in that trance state where the little guys are Doing Things and I just have to write it down kfjdjf. Sometimes I have an idea I like but it takes some pondering to find an emotional angle to connect with the character that makes sense as to why they are Doing The Plot, so nailing that angle before I commit to writing helps...
If I start getting bogged down in research I do the "five link" rule, where I only let myself read five things about the topic, try and cobble together enough of an explanation to pass a sniff test, then move on kgkrkrkdj
Also with skipping, the Sticking Point comes when I get too far ahead and then lose motivation for the part I was writing. Trying desperately to avoid this with my two multi-parters rn jdkdjd. Only letting myself write one or two scenes ahead helps a little...

A big reason why I like the Black Panther films is that you can totally ignore everything else and the story works fine. You can forget Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame, just watch the first film and then its sequel. I didn’t like Captain America having his third film be changed to Avengers 2.5 just because marvel wanted to compete with Batman V Superman that same year, or Planet Hulk getting a half-assed adaptation in Thor 3, or Wanda stealing the show from Doctor Strange in his own sequel. Cameos can be fun but those were a bit much. The worst offenders are the mcu Spider-Man movies because Peter is shown being pretty dependent on characters like Iron Man, Nick Fury, Doctor Strange, and even versions of himself from older movies. And both Iron Man and Doctor Strange were responsible for the villains showing up in those films.
I will say due to the...really badly handled introduction of Skaar in She Hulk, its likely we could potentially get a Planet Hulk adaption down the line hopefully, but at the same time, as you pointed out, they already took half of that adaption in Ragnarok with Hulk landing on another planet due to leaving for space at the end of Age Of Ultron (another set up that went in weird places...at least it didn't go nowhere I guess like most MCU set ups lately). And your not wrong on the others: Civil War was basically MCU trying to compete with Batman Vs Superman (and yet somehow, Batman Vs Superman is the one getting dragged still when I'd happily rewatch it over Civil War) while also giving Captain America's film to Iron Man basically, and Wanda basically took over a film that wasn't hers to the point every character is depowered just to make her look better as remember: Doctor Strange is meant to be a powerful sorcerer as is Wong and the other sorcerers and even Miss America in the comics is pretty powerful, but they all depowered just to make Wanda this powerful villain that takes over his film that should have been him facing Mordo with the set up first Doctor Strange did, but nope I guess (and given how they planned to have Wanda kill Mordo before it was cut from film...maybe Mordo escaped being in this film...at least main universe him, anyway...).
And oh god, don't get me started on the MCU treatment of Spiderman. At least when you watch the OG trilogy and Amazing Spiderman films, you know they spidey films and you see Peter doing everything on his own with his villains having some form of connection to him. MCU???? Tony Stark caused the first two villains and Peter just happens to get caught in the messes each time and No Way Home can try all it wants: Strange should have told Peter about the spell PRIOR to doing it and therefore, if Peter did still do his stupid mistake, it would be his fault, but no, Strange doesn't, and therefore Strange's fault too. Plus its funny as hell they clearly wish they got to do Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus and Electro and Sandman, but they didn't, so they drag the prior Spiderman films versions of them into this Spiderverse rip off and force a connection between MCU peter and Spiderman films Green Goblin via fridging Aunt May, because beyond that, MCU Peter has zero connection to these villains and the other two Spidey's have more development with the villains then he does.
Like, there's fun little cameos everyone whose seen prior stuff can enjoy (Doctor Who coming to mind here along with DC's Shazam! and Black Adam), and then there's the MCU having the cameos take over the whole film somehow, meaning your forced to watch prior stuff to understand. And as much as I can agree Black Panther is easy to watch because it doesn't rely on prior stuff (with the only set up being in the end credits where we see Bucky), gonna have to sadly point out Wakanda Forever does have that stupid Valentina stuff shoved in to set up Thunderbolts, though gonna assume that was on higher up's end and not Ryan Coogler's end, since its basically apart of their pattern in the MCU at this rate.

20 Questions for Writers
i was tagged by cousin @radioactive-earthshine
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
175 published works! I do not count any WIPs, outlines, notes scratched longhand, or random shitposts I make on the tunglr because that's another 1700+ 😂😂😂
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
According to my stats page.... 1,218,398. So 1.2 million+ words published since maybe 2010. Everything prior to 2010 was deleted because I was super embarrassed of what I used to write 😭
3. What fandoms do you write for?
I follow my heart so my AO3 is basically my fixation chart in real-time. Way too many specific fandoms to count, but in terms of medium: I write for a lot of manga fandoms, used to write kpop fanfiction as a kid, still write kdrama fanfiction whenever something catches my eye, and of course comic books and wrestling. I also have a handful of fanfics for books.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Shadow Dance (Captain America/Avengers movies) Sometimes Love Starts in the Bed [Or that One Week Kamui Tried His Parents' Approach at Romance] (Gintama manga) To the Rhythm of His Love (Black Clover manga) Tere Liye, Hum Hain Jiye (Black Clover manga) Red Bangles, Black Anklets (Naruto manga)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I love responding to comments!! It makes me feel special lmao 😂
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Ephemeral (Hunter x Hunter manga). I basically wrote the ending for the Dark Continent arc (since it's unlikely it'll ever get finished), and sank the boat and all its passengers while making my OTP end up together in heaven after they both died 😂😂😂
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Leoht Unfæger (Beyond Evil kdrama). Basically wrote a novella repairing my ship's relationship that the kdrama had done serious damage to. They got married in the end even though one half went to jail for contributing to the other half's sister's demise. Oh, and the same guy who went to jail also used to bang the sister 😂😂😂
8. Do you get hate on your fic?
Regularly! I'm pretty vocal about my likes and dislikes, and many times, by behavior has invited demons into me house. During my Black Clover fandumbing days, a crackhead used to make it their mission to leave hateful comments on my fics. I don't delete them however. Most of the time it makes me laugh bc you can figure out the speech patterns and tag exactly who it is that wrote it. I like to think ten years down the line, they'll look back on their clownery and let the shame eat them alive.
9. Do you write smut?
Yes!
10. Do you write crossovers?
It depends! During my kpoppie days, I did a crossover of my favorite band and one of my favorite kdramas, and never finished it (even though I have the ending outlined on paper). It really depends on the fandoms and if I find synergy between them.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Probably lol, but not that I know of. I grew up during the asianfanfics days, and used to post fanfiction on other sites before I got an AO3 account. It was not uncommon to see fanfiction stolen from LJ and other sites that were then posted to asianfanfics, which had a notorious plagiarism issue.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! I have three in circulation in the Russian language, and one that was translated into Chinese!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
Nope, unless RPing during the third grade on Naruto forums counts as collaborating on fanfic 😂😂😂
14. What‘s your all-time favourite ship?
It changes every day bc I am dynamic and go with me heart. But also note, for some of my favorite ships, I've either never written fanfiction for, or it's no longer available cuz I done deleted it, so I'll just note my CURRENT haunts (which may or may not be decades old... sad 😂).
Comic books: Jon Kent/Jay Nakamura, Bart Allen/Kon El
Manga: Asta/Liebe, Jack the Ripper/Yami Sukehiro
Who knows what I will like tomorrow.... I certainly don't 🤪
15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have a Smallville Earth 2 post-canon fic outline I've had sitting in my drafts for over ten years....... Inshallah one of these days, but I sincerely doubt it 😂😂😂
16. What’s your writing strengths?
Building dread, purple prosing, and writing the saddest sadz before giving folks the happy ending. I'm also a slowburn maestro. Love horror, but usually end up writing more romance than plain horror LOL 👽
17. What’s your writing weaknesses?
I be overthinking shit, or I be outlining something and saying I'm finna write it but then I don't because I end up getting distracted by something else. I have a Prison Playbook kdrama fic outline that's nineteen pages long that I will never write out bc I got distracted by ANOTHER kdrama. I have OCD but that shit apparently has no impact on my publication goals 😭
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Love it! I'm fluent in multiple languages, so I love peppering in different languages in my fanfics, and regularly borrow from Hindi and Arabic language songs, poems, and other media to title fics. Maybe 30% of my fanfiction is inspired by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan songs. It do be like that sometimes djhfgdfgdf
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I genuinely don't remember anymore, it has been SO long. All I DO know is that I deleted it all because I was an embarrassed baby and really wish I hadn't. It can be anything between the following fandoms: Yugioh, X-Men comics, Bleach, Smallville, some variant of old teen movies, etc. I seriously don't remember which one, but ONE of them. lol.
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
All of them. I bleed words. I be rereading my own fanfiction like they're the hottest novels on the stands. I try to read other fanfiction when the mood strikes, but I myself am my target audience, so I be writing things that I know I'm gonna reread years down the line. For example, my HxH fanfics are still my favorite fanfics from the fandom cuz nobody else was writing Hisoka/true!form!Bisky, and few people were dedicated to Melody/Kurapika. I'm a narcissist 👽👽👽

tell me about ur comfort shows, movies and video games plsss 🥺🩷🩷🩷
ooooohhh okay i will try to be concise but i can have lots of things to say lol
shows:
the good place - i just love this show. it's about ethics and morality and also choosing to be good to others. and it's funny. what's not to love??
elementary - elementary is like a warm blanket i wear. it was the first show i ever started watching when it premiered and stayed on top of for the entire time it was airing. sherlock & joan are literally everything to me and i fell off my rewatch at the last season bc i didn't want it to end (again)
ted lasso - this one is pretty self-explanatory but much like the good place, it's about kindness and being good to others and it's hilarious. whenever i feel like shit i rewatch the christmas episode from s2 lol
movies:
the princess diaries 1 & 2 - i just love these movies so much. the humor in them is so good!!! i missed so much when i was younger. they're just as funny, if not funnier, as an adult now. maybe they're comforting bc of the nostalgia but i just love how familiar they feel
into the spider-verse - if i want to be entertained by a Quality Film, this is what i'll watch. when i saw it in theaters i wanted to see it again and when i bought it i watched it and then literally started it over to immediately watch it again. it's just phenomenal and i love every second, every frame. this movie has a special pedestal in my heart next to peeta mellark
captain america: the winter soldier - aside from movies i watched as a kid, this may be the film i've seen the most. i just think it's great. the music is so special, the pacing is perfect, and the dynamics between everyone.... this was top-tier moviemaking, particularly for marvel, bc it was before every mcu movie felt quite so formulaic.
video games:
animal crossing - i kind of don't want to count new horizons in this bc it doesn't feel the same but i spent soooo much time playing ac games on my nintendo ds lite and my 3ds. i just love going into the games to talk to all my adorable ass villagers.
the last of us part ii - so this kind of comes with a caveat. i only count this if i skip all the cutscenes. i really really like how the gameplay feels so sometimes i'll just hop into chapters or combat encounters to mess around bc i know exactly how they'll go and i challenge myself to harder difficulties (or just go OP with all the cheats on). the content itself throughout the story isn't particularly comforting sldfjksdfl
skyrim - i have a tough time playing it these days (i just got it again and am playing for the first time in like 10 years) because of motion sickness stuff that hurts my eyes but i love skyrim so much. this was the first huge open-world game i ever really loved and i credit this one and portal 2 for kind of opening the door to gaming for me.
portal 2 - i can't go without mentioning this one bc even though i haven't been able to play it in a LONG time bc i have it on xbox 360 and my laptop can't run it, this game is the first game i remember REALLY loving. it's so special to me. i don't remember how many times i played through it but i know it was at least twice if not 3 times, which is a lot for me as a teenager. it's a quality game with really clever levels, fantastic voice acting, hilarious lines, and a really fun style of play.
it's sleepover saturday! send me... whatever?

cactus, abelia, daffodil, sage, edelweiss, jasmine, palm tree, nutmeg, papyrus 😁
Oh! So many!! Thank you, friend, this was very sweet of you!! I will try (and inevitably fail) to keep from rambling too terribly, but know that I love and appreciate you so dearly for this!!
This got long, so answers are under the cut! 💖💞💖
Get to know me!
cactus ⇢ something you’re currently learning (about)?
I'm learning French! All over again. I am haunted by the Duolingo owl and its reminder to keep my streak up and have so far done pretty well for someone who usually absolutely sucks at remembering to do things on a daily basis!
abelia ⇢ do you have a particular piece of jewelry you always wear or can’t part with?
I answered this here, but basically: I do not! I'm not much of a jewelry wearer, in truth. I tend to fidget, and in fidgeting, break things. I do wear jewelry often though, mostly when I need to look professional or if I'm going to an event — my mother's costume jewelry from India is... not an everyday thing though, for sure.
daffodil ⇢ do you have siblings? if yes, in what ways do you think you’re similar to or different from them?
I have a younger brother! He's the smarter one, the much more put-together one, and the definitely way better at his job one. He's in college now, about to graduate, and having all manner of adventures I was too scared to have at his age.
sage ⇢ what ‘medium’ of art (poetry, music, fiction, paintings, statues etc.) is the most touching to you? why do you think that is?
Music really gets to me. I grew up really immersed in religion and so many of our prayers are "sung" rather than said aloud, and so the way I learned the history of my faith is through music. I find myself closest to the Divine when I am listening to music, and growing up as part of an Abrahamic faith, I do resonate with Christian allegory because those are stories I remember being sung during majlis too. Every prayer I remember is because it was sung to me when I was learning it, and to this day, I keep those same tunes.
edelweiss ⇢ how’d you think of your url/username? what’s it associated with to you?
Puns. Oh lord, so many puns. My username was something handed to me, after I made so many puns I earned the name Puntessa (Pun + Contessa) and then the name Punemy (Pun + Enemy) as well as numerous jokes about them spotting me the moment they saw [Puntessa is typing...] on Discord.
jasmine ⇢ do you have a movie or book you loved but will never watch/read again?
There's this Bollywood film, Bajirao Mastani, that I absolutely adored. It was cinematic and beautiful, the costume and set design were sublime, the story was heartbreaking, the music still resonates with me... and then the ending happened and it was just so absolutely poorly done that I can never watch it again because I'm convinced the ending was when they ran out of money and just gave up. Awful awful awful CGI.
palm tree ⇢ do you have a fictional villain you shouldn’t like but love regardless?
I mean like... all of them? Listen. As a Captain America fan, as someone who considers Steve Rogers to be their comfort character, the fact that I am head over heels in love with Helmut Zemo is an actual problem and I should probably feel guilty but I don't. I'm gonna just... make it work, one day.
nutmeg ⇢ how’s your room/home decorated? do you have a specific theme or style going on?
Chaotically. I have books everywhere. Laundry that still needs folding. None of the posters I bought to put up in my room are actually put up. It feels a bit like a dorm room that I keep telling myself I'll decorate one day, but am often too busy/too tired to actually decorate. Maybe if I settle somewhere more permanent I'll hire someone to decorate my house in the dark mushroomcore aesthetic I desire.
papyrus ⇢ if you put your ‘on repeat’ playlist on shuffle, what’s the first song that comes up? what do you like about it / associate it with?
The first song that came up was Lay this Body Down by Sam Lee and I've had that one on repeat for days working on Sixteen Tons so I associate it with that fic, with exhaustion and giving just a bit too much of the self, with that nasty habit of people-pleasing that so many are afflicted with these days, and with becoming the monsters our parents make of us, baring our throats to the sky as we cry out for something more than the inevitable.
You know. Healthy thoughts.

Hey Maja! I hope you’re doing great!
So I sent this to @nothingtoseehereandthere but I wanted to share with you too, because I value your input🥰 and I really hope you see this and share your thoughts.
Can I add something about this new brown coat white shoes talk?
So that blog and the anons on there are speculating that Alba was on set of ghosted with that brown coat. Okay. So the only pics they have of Alba with a brown coat is on set. On set that she wore for a character. So that coat belongs to the wardrobe department. Does that blog and their anons really believe that Alba then took that coat with her as a "souvenir" and later wore it on set of ghosted while visiting?
If an actor/actress ever wants to or ends up taking something of their character's from a film set production, it's not going to be a mundane everyday item, like an easily accessible coat that can be bought from a store.
For example-
When Chris played Captain America, he didn't end up taking Steve's baseball cap or glasses used for disguise. Chris said he took the whole Cap costume and shield.
Just some food for thought.
ALSO something to add- some cast members of Harry Potter wanted to take their wands and they weren’t allowed to. So it’s not that easy for actors to just take anything.
Hi, thanks for your input! I didn't plan to talk about this whole coat debate, but I also want to share a few thoughts and why I think it's not her.
I'm not so sure if it belongs to her character. I didn't see the movie, so I don't know if her character wore a coat like that or not. Obviously, if it's not hers, she clearly didn't take it home with herself. And I also agree that she wouldn't take something so simple from the set; it's just a coat, nothing interesting, or nothing she can't buy.
However, to me, that woman's coat looks different than Alba's. I think the one Alba is wearing looks darker; maybe it's because of the filter, but still. There are buttons on Alba's, while I don't see any on the woman's.
I also don't think the shoes look exactly the same. Alba's has a thicker sole. And you can clearly see that the woman in the Dodger picture has bigger feet than Alba. So the shoe size also doesn't match.
And most importantly, you can clearly see that the woman in the Dodger picture is way taller than Alba and has a completely different body shape.
It's not her. And it's really tiring that people think every single woman is her. She isn't the only woman around Chris, especially when he is working. Not everything is about her, but a lot of people make it out to be.
Thanks @jaqui-has-a-conspiracy-theory for the pictures! ❤️

it's wednesday so ask me about my WIPs! maybe that'll get my brain gears turning enough to actually finish and publish any of them
My current WIPs:
Tumblr media
DHG 2: the second chapter of my Our Flag Means Death Stizzy fic Don't Handle Gently which i have been struggling to write for months. like literally that document is only 1500 words i've been at it since pretty much immediately after i published the first chapter last august. strange that i'm having such a hard time w/ it because it's planned out really well in my head so can i please just put it into words already? Also this is literally the only non-loki-centric fic on this list whoops
prince of jotunheim: this was an idea i had pretty recently and have manged to bust out 2000 words in a relatively short time, meant to be just a oneshot. captain america and the avengers realize that hydra has loki's scepter and they cannot find it, so they go to jotunheim where loki was sent as punishment after The Avengers (2012) to interrogate loki and are not prepared for what they find. really this fic is just a vehicle to express a lot of headcanons and theories i have about the mcu i regards to loki and elements relating to him.
Stained Red ch 1 draft: you'll notice that this document specifies the chapter and that it's a draft and that's because i started writing something entirely different as a oneshot about Loki but then i went, "no! i can make this an elaborate project i'll work on on and off for over eight months and still not be anywhere close to completing the first chapter that is already over 5000 words!" 😑🔫 it's a Loki/Matt Murdock fic, no I still have not actually gotten them in the same room to talk to each other yet, I only managed to bring Matt into the story 600 words ago. I posted a draft of this back in february, some of what's in there has been cut or edited.
Infinity war break it: you know about fix it fics? "oh canon was broken so i'm gonna repair it, grab the duct tape tee hee! :)" well i know infinity war is already broken but goddamn i'm gonna take a hammer and break it some more! break it worse! heimdal sends loki (and thus the space stone) to earth before thanos's army even boards. (and because thanos doesn't get the space stone, he can't follow through on the rest of the shit he did in the movie (including sending his kids to earth) as he has to get there the slow way instead of instantly teleporting) and then the avengers have to reunite to stop loki, who crashed down into Strange's house and then ran away, as far as WIPs go this is like barely on the way to being dough, it's flour and salt but i need to go to the store to buy yeast
matchmaker thor: I've started and scrapped the beginning of this fic multiple times, i last opened it almost a month ago but honestly i have been thinking about this wip a lot lately, mainly in the sense that i think for this fic it'd be fun to have Loki be a trans man, like as an extra detail slightly informing the context of Loki's life. Loki lives in stark tower, Thor meets daredevil and finds out he knows if people are or aren't lying and decides that he would be a perfect match for famous liar Loki and sets out to set them up! if only Loki would stop wasting his attentions on this annoying Matt guy he met at the library.
so those are the WIPs i've worked most recently on! ask me stuff about them!

On twitter the other day, Brandon Taylor called Batman TAS horny and like... it really is. It's a kid's show but also like, it is horny in a way the MCU is not. ??? hmm. I would argue that the first Captain America movie was a little horny (that camera was lusting after most of the mains) but after that, nothing really was. It was just pretty. (Maybe the murderwalk? but mostly no. Anyway.)
But this cartoon is like, long, slow pan down the slinky female bodies, and barrel-chested Bruce Wayne shirtless like... more than you'd think while he also has tension with like every single female character (but Harley and Pam, interestingly) and I don't know if it's a holdover from the comics, or that the use of a vaguely 40s style makes everything have that same suspended tension of 1940s movies that couldn't show sex or what hmmm

I think the writers just realized how popular Into the Spider-Verse was, so they thought if they made Wanda have the same motivationn as Kingpin, she'd be just as popular. Of course, they forgot that unlike Wanda, the family Kingpin lost wasn't a figment of his imagination, and therefore, isn't as crazy.
That and Kingpin is already an established villain who any marvel fan entering will know off or if its new fans watching Spiderverse, the film does a pretty good job setting him up as a villain. Like, that sequence with the clicking pen as we see the flashbacks before at the crash, the pen finally breaks??? *chiefs kiss* Send my compliments to the writers and animators, it was sooo good. And like, as much as Miles' Peters death isn't you know, bloody and shit, it's still impactful. We've never seen Peter be killed in a movie or show before....well, outside of Infinity War but....we...we don't talk about Infinity War, but like, its impactful to anyone to see Peter off all heroes be killed and....actually be gone. In MoM??? The deaths are all over the place, and most of them are just stupid. I can't tell if Miss America's moms are dead cause apparently they were only teleported due to....kid America getting scared by a bee.....only in the MCU will you get origins like this. But like, most of the deaths seem to be just MCU going, "SEE WE CAN GET VIOLENT WITH DEATHS-" but....like....its just eh. Avengers 2012 actually made you feel bad when Phil was suddenly killed by Loki. What do I feel when Wanda kills Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, Captain Carter and Maria Rambeau are killed? That I would like to scream cause multiverses smartest minds and they revealed their secret weapon for Wanda to kill with ease.....that and Wanda has a racism problem and it being almost disturbing she killed a Maria variant after hurting Monica in Wandavision, who was still mourning her mom in that universe. Though did kind of feel like shit with Xavier's....just because I am a x-men fan, so learning he goes out like that....it makes me want to scream cause the disrespect to Patrick Stewart and his take on Charles Xavier.... And only reason I felt bad for Sara dying is....cause yeah, she was at least established as a character....but of course, the Racist Witch has to throw a tantrum when precious book is destroyed and burn Sara alive, making me wonder if MCU is doing this on purpose with Wanda at this rate.
But yeah, Kingpin at least makes sense....because his family was VERY much real....but Wanda's literally were the result of her playing Barbie but with real life people and she KNOWS they won't real, and yet, she still wants to go and steal another her's kids cause....maybe trying to have Tommy and Billy for real wasn't a option? Like, Wanda in this film makes zero sense for motivations and its really a sign that they just wanted to do villain Wanda without trying.

Marvel Movie Night: Spider-Man Homecoming
Tumblr media
It's probably no shock to anyone who has followed my blog long enough for me to say that I love this film.
I think for any of us who, in general, enjoy these fun yet ridiculous superhero films has a few favorites, and Spider-Man has always been one of mine. While I loved when he was brought into Civil War, I had been skeptical when they announced they were doing another movie. Did the world need another Spider-Man franchise attempt?
Why yes - yes it did.
No, I don't think this is the best film ever made. It's not even the best Marvel film. But there's something light and enjoyable about it - something that allows me to get comfy on the couch and just enjoy the entertainment for two hours. Sometimes films, characters, stories just connect to a person - and this is one of those films for me.
I adore Tom Holland's Spider-Man. I adore his Peter Parker. He plays the part with just the right amount of awkwardness and eagerness; of youth and wit and dorky charm. With a character as beloved as this, you're always going to have people prefer one aspect or another, but for me (as someone who, yes, actually has read the comics) Holland's portrayal brings out the aspects of the character that I personal enjoy.
And even though I feel like people miss the point due to all the MCU trappings - it is just a film about a kid who happens to have superpowers. It kind of explores and celebrates the fun of being Spider-Man - and maybe all of this works better for people now since we'll eventually be getting the angst ridden origin story a bunch more movies down the line.
I love that the film's first third is mostly just high school-ish hijinx. The cast is fantastic - I love Jacob Batalon as Peter's Guy in the Chair/Bff Ned. Zendaya may not have a huge part in the film, nor is her MJ anything like her comic book counterpart, but man her edgy mysteriousness is so much more interesting Kirsten Dunst's bland and boring MJ. The rest of the kids, too, including Laura Harrier's popular girl Liz, feel like actual kids. And it's nice to have an inner city school be diverse and not full of the same looking white people.
Also, while I don't have much to say about her - I do like Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. It does make more sense for Peter to have an aunt who is closer to middle aged than downright old. And I'm glad she was characterized as someone who is fun while still being an adult. Even if we don't see much of her - the dynamic between her and Peter really works.
Meanwhile, I'm one of those people who actually enjoys the fact that it's all tied up in the MCU. I like that this film shows that there are actual consequences to the events that happen in the MCU. I like that focuses not on space gods and super humans but regular people. And yes, I like the awkward father-son dynamic that is Tony Stark to Peter Parker. (And I know this is a major grip to Spider-Man fanboys out there - I get it, and it's fine that this one isn't for you.) Spider-Man has been teaming up with people in offshoot comic books since the 60s. And, if I'm being honest, I enjoy the character more when he's working with other people.
Spider-Man has always been known for having a huge rogue's gallery. Not sure if the Vulture is one of his most popular or well known, but I think he works for this story. Michael Keaton is perfectly cast - and he's truly more terrifying as just Michael Keaton then when they put him in the somewhat awkward suit. I will say - if I have one grip about the film it's that the action sequences between Spider-Man and the Vulture are somewhat dull. The last sequence on the plane has always bored me a little - and I think it takes away, a little, from that whole -- superhero on the ground -- they spent the whole movie building up.
But that said, I really just love this film - from the Donald Glover cameo, to the Captain America health videos, to the fact that Gwenyth Paltrow had no idea she was in this film. There are so many little moments, fun beats and great one-liners that just makes this film really work and resonate for me. It just makes me feel all warm inside whenever I revisit it. And while I think the next two films in the trilogy might have some higher highs to go along with them, this is probably the best all around film in this particular series.
Final Verdict: This is my Spider-Man, and I'm glad to have him on my screen.
Next Up: More bright colors as Thor Ragnarok turns the corner.

There's a tweet going around about how someone couldn't understand Doctor Strange 2 because they didn't watch Spider-Man NWH and WandaVision, and like ... yeah.
First let me say that I don't think you need No Way Home. It might give you some multiverse insight, but it's not instrumental to the plot of Multiverse of Madness. But otherwise, yeah. You needed to watch WandaVision. You need to watch previous MCU movies. If you don't, you're not going to understand everything. (I also think some people that didn't watch WV think that the new characters were introduced there or that the multiverse happened and we all understood it. But nah, just Wanda's sons and the fact that she became the Scarlet Witch.)
But why are people upset at the MCU for being a connected universe? This isn't a new development, and it would be bad if it all of a sudden wasn't a connected universe. Y'all not reading books 3 and 4 before reading book 5 is your own fault, not the movie's fault.
I have said this before and people get mad because they think I'm saying it's a direct copy, but the MCU works like comics. What I mean by that is, the story is continuous and ongoing. If you read comics, you should know what I mean. You can sometimes pick up a book and follow everything, but sometimes you didn't read the latest run of Spider-Man and you don't know why Peter Parker is depressed about his divorce from MJ and his Spidey sense is off because of his broken heart, even though you're reading a Captain Marvel comic and Spider-Man only shows up in some panels when they're fighting together for some reason, and his Spidey sense throws off their mission. Sure, it can be confusing, but that's just how reading comics is and it's okay.
Watching MCU movies is the same way. Sometimes, you don't know why Wanda is depressed about losing kids you didn't know she had and why she plans to jump universes to find said kids. But the difference is that it's far easier to watch everything the MCU puts out than to read every comic that Marvel publishes. It's been like 15 years. If you don't know by now that you need to watch every movie or TV show to understand everything, or just reconcile that you will not understand plot points from the things you missed, that's your fault. This line everyone keeps repeating "A good movie shouldn't need you to watch anything else" is simply not true, and nobody would say it if it wasn't about the MCU, which is the big film punchingbag right now. Nobody would watch the 5th Harry Potter movie and complain that they didn't understand even though they didn't watch the 2, 3, and 4. If they did, everyone would call them an idiot, because they skipped movies. Nobody would watch Rise of Skywalker and complain that they didn't know who anyone was even though they didn't watch The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi.
You can't skip movies in a franchise and be mad at them for having continuity. Everyone else watched the other stuff and wants the continuity. You dropped the ball, not the other way around.
But also, I think most people just are assuming we meet America Chavez and the Illuminati before in WandaVision or No Way Home. Because the only WandaVision detail that matters is that she lost her sons, who she created through magic, and that she wants them back. And again, nothing from No Way Home really matters much, except that Strange mentions it in passing to America. If you couldn't follow Multiverse of Madness because of two little boys and Wanda's power, then yeah, maybe it is time for you to sit the MCU out.
