I'm having the horrible realization that Aleksander never actually did any serious wooing of Alina in the books. It's all just Alina her self being horny attracted to him. But this is supposedly???? His grand scheme???? Of manipulation???? Implications! It seems like the girls in these books wasn't the only one slut shamed. I'm- ā˜
Leigh wrote a man sexy and captivating and said "it's his fault, actually, that Alina got a crush on him. He shouldn't of.... uh.." Flips through papers. "Ah, had such pretty eyes."
Okay! šŸ‘€Yes, we are finally doing this!
I'm flipping through my copy of Shadow & Bone and noting down all the interactions between the Darkling and Alina which I've put in chronological order beneath the cut.
First of all, the Darkling and Alina are only alone together in about a handful of scenes. Most of the time, the are surrounded by other Grisha or Baghra or are in a public place. A lot of the Darkling's actions and words are clouded by Alina's own insecurities. She constantly voices how she feels like she's not good enough, not pretty enough, not strong enough and he takes it in stride and gently encourages and placates her. There are a few lies he does tell her (that the Black Heretic was his ancestor, that he wants to destroy the Fold, and he doesn't know what Baghra's power is, etc) but if we extrapolate the trajectory of her ill-fated romance arc, I think even book!Darkling would have told Alina about his real plans if she seemed like she'd accept them.
A lot of speculation has been made about the Darkling's seduction of Alina and honestly???? Aleksander literally just exists and Alina is thirsting for him because she's desperately looking for validation and re-assurance. I initially head-canoned his first kiss by the lake as being pure calculation and the kiss at the Winter Fete being 100% accidental (because Dark Lord Sasha played himself lmao) but on this re-read, I don't even know anymore. He already came close to almost kissing her after they have a tender moment, catches himself and then immediately leaves before he can catch feelings. Then when they share another tender moment at the lake, he kisses her and then is surprised by it and before he can really process it, Ivan comes by to cockblock.
Like, even Leigh (as much as she has shit on this ship) said at one point that the Darkling has strong feelings for Alina, even if he may not necessarily quantify them as love. So looking back, I don't read anything the Darkling did as manipulative seduction. He obviously lied about some stuff and wasn't transparent about his real plans for the Fold, but as a military commander who sees Alina as an opportunity for a coup, it makes sense that he'd play that a little close to the chest---especially when Alina has proved to be wary of his powers and has a very black-and-white sense of morality. If anything, this is less "the Darkling seduced Alina to manipulate her into being used!!11" and more "local dark lord tried to encourage his protege and accidentally caught feelings and it was a mASSIVE FUCKING INCONVENIENCE TO HIS EVIL PLANS"
But you know who does slut-shame Alina a lot? Baghra. Seriously, Baghra makes Alina feel like shit for her crush on the Darkling numerous times. She has all these lines:
"You want to be [his pet]...Donā€™t bother lying to me. Youā€™re like all the rest. I saw the way you looked at him."
"Dreaming of dancing with your dark prince?"
"Foolish girl." (After Alina shamefully admits the Darkling might come to her that night)
At one point Baghra creeps on Alina and the Darkling's interactions and even though literally nothing happens between them and when the Darkling leaves, Alina catches Baghra giving her a snooty look. ("For no reason at all, I blushed")
She is determined to shame Alina for her feelings and make her feel like a lovesick idiot for daring to crush on him and this is in addition to all the slut-shaming Mal does. The narrative revealing the Darkling is the bad guy all along while leaving Alina no compelling arc to discover this on her own feels very much like Leigh hitting us all with Baghra's stick, like "Foolish girls! You thought he cared about Alina just because he has a sexy jawline??? HAHA HE LIED YOU SLUTS"
Scenes with Alina and the Darkling in Book 1
Their first scene together is in the Grisha tent. Based on Alina's description of him, she already thinks he's hot as barely any other character in this godforsaken series gets so many descriptions of their grey/smoke/slate/quartz eyes as Aleksander does šŸ˜
The next time they're together he saves her life. Alina is traumatized from seeing a man sliced in half and the Darkling instructs her to keep her eyes on him instead. She is disturbed that he killed the person about to murder her and this aversion seems incredibly contrived and arbitrary on behalf of the author. It's almost like she wants Alina to be vindicated and shamed for not trusting her initial bigotry against him or something šŸ¤”The Darkling admits even he can make mistakes and then he touches the back of Alina's neck (with some secret Heartrender/Healer abilities?) and she falls asleep riding on his horse.
They spend the next few days traveling. Alina notes that the Darkling hasn't spoken to her (probably because he's focused on getting her to the Little Palace without any more assassination attempts) but Alina is a paranoid she's offended him somehow. Again, this is just Alina's insecurity painting a narrative that simply doesn't exist based on what actually happened so far.
They exchange a few words by the stream and Alina fishes for pity points by saying she's ugly and can't possibly be Grisha. Aleksander appears 100% done with her stupidity and says she doesn't understand but he's not in the mood to explain at the moment and walks off ā˜ ļø
Alina joins the Darkling and his men for a meal. She notes that the grouse they've killed is meager shared meal but that the Darkling doesn't want to put his men in danger by sending them out to hunt in the forest at night šŸ˜ŒHe also sits on the floor to eat like they do and he doesn't take more than the regular portion than they do šŸ˜Œ. Sorry, how is this man the most ~evil~ wizard on the planet? He is obviously a good and fair commander and beloved by the Grisha.
Alina has been checking Aleksander out the entire time so when he catches her, he walks over to talk. He fishes around for information on what Alina has heard about him. He seems sad when Alina mentions she has heard that Darklings are born without souls, though not surprised. He then spins the story about the Black Heretic being his ancestor and how the Fold was a mistake and how every Darkling since then has tried to undo it and how Alina is "the first glimmer of hope" he's had in a long time.
Because Alina is still on that "Grisha are unnatural monsters" agenda, she asks him about the Cut and he explains it but she's still distrubed. He asks her if it would have been better if he used a sword and she replies: "I don't know". The Darkling gets offended and leaves. Alina tries to convince herself she can't have possibly hurt his feelings (because Darklings don't have souls or feelings?) and then feels paranoid that she's failed some secret test. Yeah, the test you failed is called "empathy", Alina šŸ™„
Two days later, they arrive at Os Alta. Aleksander roasts the Grand Palace as the ugliest effing building he's ever seen. He leaves immediately after dumping Alina at the Little Palace and Alina actually seethes that he isn't paying more attention to her? I understand that it's overwhelming to go to a brand new place, but Alina expecting him to constantly hold her hand and explain everything to her after she basically insulted him is a bit strange.
The next time Alina sees the Darkling, they are scheduled to appear before the King and Queen. The demonstration is a surprise for Alina and Aleksander's lack of transparency of what's expected of her means she's forced to rely on him and trust his instincts. This might be his underhanded way of getting Alina to see that she can trust him; that he will not make her look like a failure or humiliate her; that they are in this together and it will only work if she trusts him.
After the demonstration, Genya and the Darkling trash the monarchy for a bit (Alina is horrified) and then the Darkling orders Genya to get a black kefta for Alina, to which Alina infamously wants a blue one. The Darkling doesn't really put up much of a fight, merely wanting to know why. Alina decides he doesn't approve of her choosing blue and wonders to Genya if he's angry.
After Alina's first day, the Darkling calls her to his quarters to ask her how her day was. Alina is surprised that this is all he wanted to know because she was paranoid he was going to torture her??? She says: "Why shouldn't I be afraid of you?...You can cut people in half. I think it's fair to be a little intimidated." If the Darkling is offended or angry about this, he doesn't show it and merely indulges her. He notes that she has a habit of running her hand across a scar on her palm and asks her about it, tracing the scar himself. Alina gets distracted by his touch but manages to answer his questions: she got the scar at Keramzin, Mal is also an orphan, he is good at tracking. He shows her a secret passage back to her rooms to avoid the main hall.
Alina starts her training and at one point laments that the Darkling is rarely at the Little Palace and when he is, he never speaks to her or barely looks her way and she is convinced it's because she's a failure and can't summon light on her own. It could also be because, you know, he's the commander of the Second Army and is usually seen in talks with other military advisors and the fact that Alina kinda lowkey insulted him with her wariness about his powers???
The next time they are together, Alina interrupts him and Baghra arguing. He politely asks her how she is. Baghra antagonizes her. The Darkling defends her. They talk about amplifiers and because Baghra is being a snarky little shit about it, they take their conversation outside.
Aleksander complains about how annoying his mom is and then asks Alina what stories she's heard about Morozova's herd. At one point he laughs for the first time and Alina practically creams her pants at the sound. Alina expresses her concerns that she can't summon any light and the Darkling says he's not worried and it will happen when it happens and worse case scenario, it will happen once she has the stag. They have a quiet intimate moment, gazing softly into each other's eyes and then suddenly Aleksander realizes he's catching feelings and steps back suddenly like "GoodLuckWithYourLessonsOKayBYE". Baghra watches this interaction from her hut and gives Alina a slut-shaming look.
Alina eventually does learn to summon light on her own. Baghra gives her grief about how it's not enough. The Darkling shows up during one of these lessons and says as much. Alina says she's useless. The Darkling corrects her (ā€œI don't think you're useless, Alina....No Grisha is powerful enough to face the Fold. Not even meā€) and then he apologizes for letting her down ("I've asked you to trust me and I haven't delivered"). He wonders if his mother is right and he's crazy to hunt the stag. They have a nice bonding moment, Aleksander lies about Baghra's power, and then he asks if Alina would think him crazy for still wanting to find the stag. She asks why he cares what she thinks, he seems genuinely surprised himself that he cares. Then he kisses her. He seems not to have meant to kiss her because then Ivan shows up for his 5 o'clock shift of cockblocking and the Darkling immediately pretends like nothing happened and walks away with him. Like dude is acting like a fucking dork who's allergic to feelings at this point. I should note here that Alina practically has an orgasm from how giddy she is about this moment. She can barely think of anything else.
The next time they're together, it's at the Winter Fete. They do their demonstration and Alina accidentally reveals her insecurities about how he had kissed her and then disappeared. He responds, "Did you really think I was done with you?" and then they enjoy some steamy kisses and thigh grabbing in an empty room before a random round of Grisha show up for their 6 o'clock shift of cockblocking. Aleksander is annoyed at his own attraction to Alina. He asks if he can come to her that night but Alina doesn't get a chance to respond.
and then the Darklina romance arc falls off a giant cliff and dies a terrible death šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Good 4 u - The Darkling x Reader
Hereā€™s a draft I found, I remember quickly writing this on the train home from college, listening to Olivia Rodrigoā€™s song on repeat until I got sick of it. Enjoy bahahahah šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
Alina this, Sun-Summoner that, Sankta Alina the other. It was annoying to constantly hear her name on other people's lips, Aleksander's especially. You should have known his obsession with her would turn into love but you were blind.
He said she was nothing worth his salt, Alina is the key to more power, he would say before he proclaimed his eternal love for you, showering you in love and pleasure. When your relationship fell apart and your heart broke, he took a piece of you with him, the temperate part, the side of you that was calm and rational. For now you were the walking form of resentment. He never cheated but this was much worse.
Aleksander didn't seem fazed, at all. No tears for the death of so many good memories, no sadness for the end of a chapter in his life. Maybe he experienced time differently from you because who in Saint's name pursues somebody so quickly after a breakup? Somebody who's already sure of their feelings long before they change their life around.
You held back your gags as you watched the two fawn over each other at the Winter Fete. She wore his color, black, and you had to admit she looked half decent in it too. You didn't hate her, she never did anything to you. But him, Oh saints you would kill him where he stood if you could. He looked happy, unlike you. It's like we never even happened, what the fuck is up with that?
There was a time when he looked at you like that, eyes full of adoration and love. Now he looked right through you, treating you like a stranger. 'He took out the trash' Zoya shrugged when you drunkenly told her what happened. Maybe she was right, maybe he never even loved me, maybe I was there to pass the time.
He was so unaffected by your break up it made you livid. Every glance spared in his direction radiated anger and disgust. You didn't even try to hide it anymore.
Your demonstration was about to begin. You were helping the Inferni twins show off your fire skills before Alina would end the show with a bang. You didn't care for parties shared with the Grand Palace and were guaranteed to leave right after your little firecracker of a performance, but some part of you itched to stay until the end.
You could see Polina get up on a small pedestal, signaling for you to get to yours. Aleksander stepped to the side, Alina at his arm. Gross. The power beamed off of him, he was doing good without me. What a shame.
You played around with the twins, completely forgetting the room of diplomats and even Aleksander, who never spared you a look. The fire felt good on your hands, swaying from side to side as you molded the element in your hands before splitting it in two, shooting it at the twins. Using your powers gave you a sense of calm and peace, but it never rid you of the rage you felt. Maybe you were too emotional.
You got down with a smile as the claps eased out. You went to leave, eager to leave the stiff atmosphere of the room. At least you showed up. But his voice made you stop at the door. Instead of it giving you a shiver of pleasure, it straightened your spine in defense.
'Her name is Alina Starkov' Someone pass me a bucket. His hands came together, submerging the room into darkness. Alina began her show, the light letting you catch a glimpse of him. As opposed to the entirety of the room, you only had eyes for him. He looked at her as if she was a goddess, he worshipped her. Fury rose in you. He looked at me like that first, or was it a lie? Maybe he never cared.
You wished for nothing more than for Alina to reject him, see him for the man he truly is. If he could play you the way he did then Saint's knows what he'll do to the poor young girl. You were headstrong and stubborn and he still managed to screw you over despite your built-up walls.
But what if they last? He'll have more power, the Sun-Summoner by his side and Ravka under his rule. And you'll still be you. An Inferni with a grudge.
Before you knew it, the room returned to its previous state and the diplomats were bowing down to their Sankta. You missed the whole thing brooding over Aleksander, who still stared at Alina like she was the air he needed to breathe.
You scoffed and walked away, not wanting to be in the same room as him anymore. What a dick. You strode around the Little Palace trying to cool down. One champagne glass turned into two then five. Still you felt the nagging tickle of anger. You suddenly heard shouts and signs of a fight, racing over to the room it was coming from. Even tipsy, the soldier in you replied immediately.
'This is for Zlatan' You ran through the door seeing an oprichniki slicing Alina's throat open. Oh Saint's no. You pounced on the man, quickly catching sight of Genya already on the floor tending to Alina. Apparently, you weren't the only one who heard the scuffle as the General's guards flooded the hallway, taking the rogue soldier from you. Your mind snapped back into reality, searching for Alina but finding a young Inferni in the black kefta. A double for security. Smart.
'Inform the General' Genya spoke, leaning over the body. Your blood ran cold, he would probably ignore you. But you did as she asked, running to where you saw him last. You searched for his black kefta in the sea of extravagantly dresses diplomats. You spotted Ivan chatting in the corner with Fedyor, 'Ivan where is the General?' You hid your blood-stained hands behind your back in an attempt to prevent unnecessary panic. 'In his quarters' He nodded his head towards the big double doors.
You walked away with a mumbled thank you. In his quarters. If Alina's absence was any indication of what he was doing, it would be a miracle if you didn't slap him the second you got the chance.
Your knock was sharp and loud in contrast to your shaking hands. Then you heard it, her laugh. You've got to be kidding me. Your bloody hands braced themselves against the doorframe, clutching the wood for dear life. Better the door than his face. As his face passed in your mind, the door opened just a tad, his body towering over your own. The smile he wore quickly washed away, replaced with a stern look.
'Y/N what are yo-' You stopped him with a signal of your hand, you didn't have the patience.
'Marie got attacked in the fitting room. She's dead. He's detained.' He looked at you passively, obviously wishing it was anyone but you knocking on his door right now.
'Wait here'
He shut the door again. But you could make out his conversation with Alina in the dead quiet of the hallway. You sent a silent prayer to the Saints about your previous argument. Let her see him for what he is.
You slowly backed away from the door, not wanting to hear anymore. You heard his boots step out into the hallway and took his silence as a sign to walk ahead to where the man was being kept. For you, the tension was awkward and insufferable but for him it was probably normal, although you knew he felt your pulsating rage.
There was nobody on this side of the Palace, his quarters weren't available to everybody and that made you thankful because what you were about to do would definitely be regarded as treason.
He didn't have time to register you turning around or the hand that slapped him across the cheek.
The noise echoed down the hallway, your hand stung, maybe that was too hard.
His jaw clenched but he didn't retalaite. Why was his ignorance such a trigger for you? It was what started this, him pretending you didn't exist caused you to fly off the walls.
You shoved his chest with all your might. Do something. He let you push him away but never looked you in the eyes.
'Are you going to say something?' You were furious, venom dripped from your words but had no effect on him. 'The big bad Aleksander lost for words? First I've ever seen it'
He turned his head towards you, looking into your eyes for the first time in weeks. It surprised you because you didn't miss it.
'What do you want me to say?' His voice was void of any emotion, no anger or pain, his composure never dropping. He was the complete opposite of you. Saints, you were the crazy ex.
You didn't reply. The truth was you didn't know what you wanted him to say. Nothing he could muster would fix this situation. His actions were irreversible and Alina was still in his chambers, the room where so many of your fondest memories took place.
'I wish to transfer to a camp. Permenantly.' You had been mulling over the decision for days now. You had put in a request with Ivan a week ago but never got an answer.
'I need you here teaching the students' So Ivan did send it on. Was this another one of his ways of ignoring you?
'Tough. I don't want to be here.' You faced your choices with logic. Your anger would never go away, the hurt of your first love betraying you soaked deep into your bones. Aleksander was immortal, he would never leave this Palace. You had no other option. He sighed loudly.
'Y/N let's keep our personal and work li-' You went for another slap, he deserved it, but this time he caught your hand mid-air, pushing you away gently. You walked backward, disgust turning in your stomach at the response your body had to his touch. He was an amplifier and the surety he brought you would always be there regardless of your feeling for him. You hated it.
'Good for you Aleksander. You got the girl, the power.... at least let me have something' Your voice cracked slightly. You wouldn't cry in front of him.
'I'll have Ivan sort it out'
With that, you left the hallway, completely forgetting about the task at hand, happy to finally have a day where he didn't cross your path.
Aleksander stood there watching your back as you walked away from him. You would never know the pain and anguish he felt every time somebody mentioned you, or when he thought of you. He loved you deeply, more than anything in this world, so he had to let you go. He would hate himself if anything happened to you in his fight for Ravka and Grisha, so he had to push you away.
He was selfish for ignoring you but also keeping you around. He knew it hurt you to see him around Alina, he knew all of it. He truly did. But he was too greedy. His own actions were confusing him. Push her away, make her hate you but keep her safe, keep her with you. It was impossible, either one or the other.
As you rounded the corner, he memorized you, all of you. It would be his last memory of you.
'Good for you Y/N, leave me and be safe'

What is your take on Benā€™s statement:
ā€œThe worst thing that he does in the whole story ā€” to me ā€” is to use the knowledge [gained from Mal] that Alina loves blue irises, and then immediately presents her with blue irises," Barnes said. "It makes me feel sick, at that moment, because it's the most outward show that he is manipulating, and it's just so outward that it makes me feel ill. When I saw that part in the show I was like, ā€˜I don't want to play a bad guy, I want to play a good guy.ā€™ā€
I was kind of surprised because this isnā€™t necessarily how I interpreted the flower scene when I watched it. Overall I think he struck a perfect balance between genuine infatuation and manipulation, but I saw most if not all of his actions during the Winter Fete as pretty sincere (you know, by Darkling standards).
I love that scene because its a perfect mix ofĀ ā€˜a cute momentā€™ but a really dick move. Cute if you donā€™t know the context and fucking HILARIOUS when you know where he got the info from.
I love the scene and while I do think Kiriganā€™s feelings for Alina at that moment are very genuine, I do categorize that move under manipulation. Because heā€™s read the letters and he knows how Mal feels about Alina and he looked at him likeĀ ā€˜yeah, Imma use him to win her over moreā€™.
At some point Iā€™m going to make a post about which of Krigianā€™s lines/scenes are manipulation and which are genuine because I actually think Ben is really good at portraying that difference. But for now, I get why he would point to that scene...
Even though thatā€™s defs not the worst thing he did, like Ben, he killed people. I know he looked sexy doing it but STILL

It happened on the war room table. They were kissing, caught up in the rush of the winter fete. Alina didnā€™t know who started it. But his lips were on hers, he was cupping her face in hands as if it were the dearest, most precious thing in the world to him. She didnā€™t know when he first became the subject of her desires. It had always been Mal for so long. Mal occupied every memory. Consumed her daydreams, hopes, and fears.
But she was on her own now. For the first time, she had someone who was separate from the little world that theyā€™d built together. Someone who talked to her about changing the world and made her feel like she belonged.
As they kissed, she pulled away for a moment.
His brow furrowed. ā€œWhatā€™s wrong?ā€ he asked.
ā€œWhatā€™s your name?ā€ she said. ā€œI canā€™t very well shout The Darkling out ifā€¦.ā€ she bit her lip, blushing. AO3 LINKĀ Ā RATED E FOR EXPLICITĀ
HERE THERE BE SMUT. YOUā€™VE BEEN WARNED.Ā
He smirked and pressed his forehead to hers. ā€œYouā€™re quite precious, Miss Starkov,ā€ he said, ā€œAleksander. Aleksander Morozova.ā€
ā€œAleksander,ā€ she repeated, with a smile, ā€œitā€™s soā€¦.ā€
ā€œRegal?ā€ he said. ā€œThe name of Kings, you know.ā€
She laughed. ā€œI was going to say normal. I donā€™t know what I expected.ā€
ā€œWell, you can see why it's rarely in use,ā€ he said, and he kissed her again, this time on her neck, ā€œdo you want this? Tell me now, Alina, and Iā€™ll stopā€¦.ā€
She reached forward and pulled his neck towards her, threading her fingers through his hair. ā€œI want this,ā€ she said firmly, ā€œI want us.ā€
He grinned roguishly, then picked her up and placed her on the table. ā€œStay still,ā€ he ordered.
ā€œWhat are you doing?ā€ she said.
ā€œYouā€™ll see,ā€ he said.
He disappeared underneath the skirt of her dress, and then he was working her underwear down. His fingers were cold against her thighs as he did, and they were still her favorite thing that she had ever felt on her skin.
The Darkling wanted her.
The most powerful grisha was going to make love to her.
To fuck her.
When her underwear was pulled down enough she feltā€¦. oh, saintsā€¦.it was his tongue, in between her folds, doing devious things to her. Alina clenched her thighs around him, and moaned his name, ā€œAleksanderrrrrrrrā€¦.Aleksanderrrrrā€¦ā€ She gripped the war room table, trying hard not to fall off, and then it wasnā€™t his tongue on her anymore.
It was his fingers, first tracing the inside and outside of her thighs, making her shiver, and then he inserted them inside of her. First one, stroking her folds, and then another. ā€œCan you take a third, my Little Saint?ā€
She moaned in response, and he stuck yet another.
ā€œYou are positively dripping for me,ā€ he said, ā€œtell me, Alina, is this your first time?ā€
She froze, and he had pulled out of her, his head out from her skirts and looking directly at her with his probing dark eyes. ā€œIā€™m notā€¦umā€¦ā€ she blushed. ā€œNo. Iā€™ve never done this before. Does that change things?ā€
He smiled. ā€œNo, Little Saint, that makes this better. It makes it special. I will be your first, and I will be your last.ā€
She shivered and watched as he undid his pants. He pulled them off, and then his cock was before her. It was not the first one she had seen. She had, after all, been a soldier and sometimes accidents happened.
Like the time she had accidentally walked into Malā€™s tent to find him tumbling one of the village girls from where theyā€™d been stationed at.
ā€œIs thereā€¦ā€
ā€œWhat?ā€ he asked.
ā€œSomething I should do for you? To make you feel good?ā€ she asked.
He smiled and made it so that there was little to no space between them. ā€œTake it in your hands,ā€ he told her.
Hesitantly, she did, and it was long and hard in her hands.
ā€œDo you feel how ready I am for you, my darling girl?ā€ he said. He reached out and stroked her cheek, and she realized that his fingers were still wet and sticky from being inside of her and making her feel all of those delicious things. ā€œStroke me,ā€ he told her.
She did, watching him grow under her touch. The Darkling clenched, and a moan came from him. ā€œAlinaaaā€¦..ā€ She liked it. She liked knowing that one of the most powerful men in Ravka was coming undone under fingers. He reached out and gripped her shoulders tightly as her touch seemed to make him lose control.
ā€œI need you,ā€ he rasped, like a man in need of water, but in this case her, ā€œI need you now.ā€
ā€œYes,ā€ she whispered, cupping his face, and pulling him in for a kiss.
He raised the skirts of her dress, and her legs were bare to him. He spread her thighs a little by moving her foot with his, and then--------
Then he was inside of her.
All of him.
He did not take her slowly. He gripped her tightly, hugging her as if she was something precious he had lost and now found. He filled her up with his cock, and he rocked his hips against hers, so hard that she nearly lost her balance on the war room table again. Alina held onto him, clinging for dear life. And then, and thenā€¦..
The cheesy thing would have been to say there were stars. But no, her body clenched around his, and there were sunbursts. It was brilliant and heated, her toes curled, and her thighs wrapped around him as she called out his real name. ā€œAleksander!ā€
She could feel him, inside of her, and then dripping down her leg. ā€œDid weā€¦ā€ she couldnā€™t bring herself to say it.
ā€œI donā€™t know,ā€ he admitted, holding her chin in his hand, ā€œbut maybe. Would it be so terrible, a child with me?ā€
She shook her head and pressed her forehead against his. ā€œNo, it wouldnā€™t be so terrible,ā€ she said, ā€œperhaps some love coming from this room is what this war needs.ā€
He smiled and kissed her again. ā€œWhen I take you the next time, itā€™s going to be in my bed. On black sheets, Miss Starkov.ā€
She laughed as he picked her up, carrying her bridal style out of the room. And the second time she made love, it was, indeed, on black silk sheets.

Pairing: Aleksander Morozova x Alina Starkov
Summary: After the Winter Fete, Aleksander returns to his rooms...
Smut!
A/N: I couldnā€™t get this idea out of my head, so here we are!
ā€œIā€™ll leave my guards outside until I return,ā€ Aleksander said, only inches from her face. Ā ā€œIā€™ll be waiting,ā€ Alina replied, breathless. Ā He placed a hand on her cheek before turning to go, everything in him telling him to stay, to keep kissing her, to keep her close. Ā But he didnā€™t get very far, Aleksander turned on his heel and hurried back to Alina, kissing her deeply once more, needing her. Ā She smiled up at him, and he forced himself to go; if he didnā€™t, heā€™d be there all night. Ā Besides, Alina said she would wait.
And wait she did, remaining in the war room for a time, unsure of how long Aleksander would be gone. Ā But after a half hour elapsed, Alina wandered around the room, looking at the maps lining the walls, the model of Ravka on the table. Ā The table Aleksander was just kissing you on, her mind supplied, and she felt herself blush. Ā Alina found herself in the doorway that led to his bedroom, and she paused. Ā Would he be angry with her if she entered? Ā Likely not, she reasoned. Ā Heā€™d just been kissing her senseless.
So she entered, taking in the room. Ā A large bed with silk black sheets, a fireplace, bookshelves. Ā Clothes were hung and folded neatly in the wardrobe, and Alina sat on the edge of his bed. Ā Her heart was beating rather fast, but she knew it was more from anticipation than nervousness. Ā Another 20 minutes or so passed before she heard the door open, and Alina straightened up. Ā ā€œAlina?ā€ Aleksander called, slightly concerned by her absence. Ā ā€œIn here,ā€ she responded, and Aleksander smiled.
He entered his bedroom, a warm feeling filling his entire body, seeing his Sun Summoner on his bed. Ā ā€œMaking yourself at home?ā€ he teased, but Alina frowned. Ā ā€œIā€™m sorry, I shouldnā€™t have-ā€ Ā ā€œShh, lapushka,ā€ Aleksander interrupted. Ā ā€œThis is exactly where I want you to be.ā€ Ā He strode over to her, taking his hands in his and pulling her to his feet. Ā Aleksanderā€™s arms wrapped around her, pulling her flush to his chest, her face only inches from his. Ā ā€œNow, shall we pick up where we left off?ā€
Alina nodded eagerly, and Aleksander laughed softly, leaning forward and pressing his lips to hers; the kiss gentle at first, but intensity and need grew rapidly. Ā  His hands bunched the silk of her kefta at her back, wanting her closer, and Alina whimpered, going limp in his arms. Ā Aleksander deepened the kiss, one hand coming to her cheek, the other splaying across her back. Ā Alina clung to the lapels of his kefta, pulling him closer to her. Ā Want and need pulsed between them, and Aleksander moaned softly against her lips. Ā He brought his hands to the fastenings of her kefta, but paused, breaking the kiss, both breathing heavily.
ā€œAre you sure about this?ā€ he asked, forehead against hers. Ā Aleksander was aching for her, wanting to tear her clothes from her gorgeous body and have his way with her, but if Alina said no, if she even hesitated, he would walk away. Ā But she nodded, pressing herself into his body. Ā ā€œIā€™m sure,ā€ she said, voice breathy with need. Ā ā€œI want you, Aleksander, please.ā€ Ā He kissed her again, removing the gold ornament from her hair, tossing it aside. Ā ā€œThen youā€™ll have me.ā€
Aleksander kissed her again, and there was only one word to describe the kiss: hungry. Ā His tongue parted her lips, entering her mouth, and Alina moaned, hands threading through his hair, tugging gently. Ā He chuckled against her lips and broke the kiss, much to Alinaā€™s displeasure, slowly unfastening her kefta. Ā The black silk rippled from her body, and Aleksander draped it over the arm of a chair, before turning his attention to the dress she wore beneath. Ā Alina felt her face heat up as Aleksander undressed her, embarrassment filling her.
Sheā€™d always been a scrawny girl, no doubt from not using her powers for her entire life. Ā She was skinny, her breasts were small, she never found herself beautiful. Ā Alina shut her eyes, not wanting to see Aleksanderā€™s face when he looked at her. Ā ā€œSolnishka,ā€ he breathed, awe in his voice, once she was naked. Ā ā€œYou are beautiful.ā€ Ā Alina opened her eyes, breath catching in her throat. Ā Aleksander was looking at her with a reverence sheā€™d never seen, his eyes roving over her body, mouth quirked up in a small smile. Ā ā€œSuch a gorgeous, perfect body, my love.ā€
Aleksander pulled her into another kiss, easing her backwards until she was sitting on the bed once more. Ā He undressed himself, his kefta tossed onto the sofa, boots kicked off, shirt pulled over his head, and trousers pushed down. Ā Alina couldnā€™t help but stare at his sculpted form: his defined muscles, his strong arms and legs, and most of all, his hard, weeping cock. Ā ā€œDo you like what you see?ā€ he asked, kneeling before Alina on the bed. Ā She nodded, mouth dry. Ā ā€œMy Alina, you are perfect. Ā
He kissed her again, lips trailing down her neck, chest, and abdomen. Ā He murmured praises into his skin as he went: ā€œSo beautiful, perfect, gorgeous, mine.ā€ Ā He kissed an identical path back up her body, and when he was done, Alina was trembling with want. Ā ā€œAleksander, please,ā€ she whispered, and Aleksander kissed her. Ā ā€œHave you ever been with a man before, milaya?ā€ Ā There had been numerous make outs, a few instances of groping over the clothes, in her time in the First Army, but Alina had never gone as far as she would go tonight. Ā She shook her head.
ā€œI will make you feel things you never thought possible, my love,ā€ Aleksander promised. Ā ā€œAnd I will be gentle. Ā If you need me to stop, just tell me, alright?ā€ Ā Alina nodded, words failing her. Ā But when he rose to his knees before him, she spread her legs, revealing her dripping cunt to his view. Ā Aleksander moaned, swiping two fingers through her slit, assessing her arousal. Ā ā€œYou want me?ā€ he asked, wanting to be completely sure that Alina wanted this. Ā ā€œI want you, please, Aleksander.ā€
He moved forward, taking his cock in hand, lining himself up with her entrance. Ā ā€œI will go slow,ā€ he promised. Ā ā€œThis may hurt, my love, but not for long.ā€ Ā ā€œPlease,ā€ was all she could manage, and Aleksander nodded. Ā He bent forward to kiss her, lips covering hers as he slowly pushed forward. Ā The stretch burned, and Alina whined, but Aleksander pressed forth, knowing she would stop him if she needed. Ā She was wet, she was warm, and she was tight, and Aleksander moaned low in his throat. Ā ā€œSaints, solnishka, you feel so good.ā€
Aleksander stilled once he was fully within her, rubbing her side comfortingly. Ā ā€œItā€™s alright, darling, youā€™re doing so well.ā€ Ā Alina whimpered softly, reaching out blindly for his hand. Ā Sheā€™d shut her eyes while heā€™d entered her, and they slowly fluttered open, meeting his grey eyes. Ā ā€œHow do you feel?ā€ Ā Alina wiggled her hips, testing the sensations, and Aleksander hissed. Ā ā€œFull,ā€ she responded, the pain making way for pleasure, the feeling of fullness changing into that of want and need. Ā
ā€œAre you ready?ā€ he asked, kissing her sweetly, and Alina nodded. Ā ā€œI am, please, Aleksander.ā€ Ā Slowly, ever so slowly, he withdrew until only the head of his cock remained inside. Ā When he thrust forward, Alina moaned, gripping his bicep with one hand, pulling his face to hers with the other. Ā He fucked her slow and gentle, cock dragging in and out of her pussy, stretching and filling her completely. Ā He knew he was the first man to take her, and Aleksander prayed he would be the last.
Alina was in heaven, she felt like she was high on pleasure, and heā€™d barely fucked her yet. Ā Pure pleasure flowed through her veins, a feeling she knew she could never go without again. Ā Aleksander rolled his hips against hers, cock gently and slowly pleasuring her. Ā When the tip hit a spot deep within her, Alina cried out, bucking her hips against his, needing more. Ā ā€œDid that feel good, dearest?ā€ Ā ā€œYes, Aleksander, more, please!ā€ Ā She felt so good, he was making her feel so good, but she needed more.
He brought a hand to her clit, rubbing slow, gentle circles around the bundle of nerves, and Alina moaned louder, rolling her hips up into Aleksanderā€™s, chasing the pleasure she so deeply craved. Ā Aleksander craned his neck to take one of her nipples into his mouth, swirling his tongue around the pebbled flesh, and Aline keened, arching into his mouth. Ā ā€œAleksander!ā€ she cried, pulling harder at his hair. Ā ā€œOh, Sasha, please!ā€ Ā He lifted his head, meeting her eyes, her pupils blown with lust. Ā
ā€œTell me what you need, Alinochka,ā€ he prompted, and Alina sighed. Ā ā€œMore, please, I need more!ā€ Ā ā€œAre you close, my sweet? Ā Are you going to come for me?ā€ Ā She was close, unbearably so. Ā Alina had brought herself to climax on her own before, but then, it was just her fingers. Ā They never did anything when she tried putting them inside her, and rubbing her own clit became mundane after a while. Ā But Aleksander filled and stimulated her in a way sheā€™d never even imagined before, and with his fingers on her clit, she felt like she could implode.
ā€œYes,ā€ she breathed, pulling him down into a kiss. Ā ā€œPlease, Aleksander, Iā€™m so close!ā€ Ā He sped up his hips, only a bit, and rubbed Alinaā€™s clit faster, and a moment later, she was coming. Ā Alina whimpered his name as she rode out her orgasm, cunt fluttering around Aleksanderā€™s cock. Ā ā€œCan you keep going?ā€ he asked, having not come himself yet. Ā ā€œWe can stop if you want.ā€ Ā ā€œNo,ā€ Alina said at once. Ā ā€œNo, keep going, please Sasha.ā€ Ā He kissed her, this kiss deeper and more passionate. Ā Alina craved more, she needed it, and Aleksander nodded, resuming his slow, gentle thrusts.
But it wasnā€™t enough. Ā Alina ached, she needed more. Ā ā€œHarder,ā€ she pleaded, making Aleksander freeze. Ā ā€œPlease, Aleksander, fuck me harder.ā€ Ā He wanted nothing more than to fuck Alina as hard as he could, to rail her into the mattress and take his pleasure from her body. Ā But this was her first time, and he didnā€™t want to overwhelm her. Ā ā€œAre you sure, darling?ā€ Ā ā€œYes, please, I need it!ā€ Ā A fire had been set in Alina, and there was only one way to extinguish it. Ā Aleksander nodded, shifting his position so he could fuck Alina as she requested: hard and fast. Ā
He now knelt upright, hands on her hips, able to gaze down on her perfect body. Ā ā€œTell me to stop and I will,ā€ he reminded, and he snapped his hips forward. Ā Skin slapped against skin as Aleksander fucked her, hard and fast, the only thoughts in his mind being Alina, Alina, Alina, and chasing his own high. Ā Beneath him, Alina was a moaning, trembling, whimpering mess, broken moans leaving her mouth. Ā ā€œYes!ā€ she cried. Ā ā€œYes, Aleksander, fuck! Ā Oh fuck, there! Ā Saints, thatā€™s it!ā€
The pious Sun Summoner, Sankta Alina, was begging for cock like a common woman, and Aleksander loved it. Ā His Alina, desperate for him, and no one else. Ā She cried out, pulling Aleksander back down to her, kissing him hungrily and clawing down his back. Ā ā€œS-Sasha, fuck, Iā€™m close!ā€ Ā ā€œI am too, solnishka,ā€ he gritted out, forehead on hers. Ā ā€œCome with me, Alina, Iā€™m so close.ā€ Ā Aleksander rubbed her clit again, making his Sun Summoner wail with unadulterated pleasure, and she came again, legs wrapping around his hips, locking him within her.
The squeezing of her pussy drove him over the edge, and Aleksander grunted his release, lips against Alinaā€™s as he spilled himself inside her. Ā They were both panting as Aleksander slowly pulled out, Alina whimpering at the empty feeling. Ā ā€œShh, Alinochka, Iā€™m here.ā€ Ā He reached into the drawer of his nightstand, pressing a small vial of pale purple liquid into her hand. Ā ā€œAlkemi made contraceptive,ā€ he explained, and Alina nodded, downing the vial with a grimace.
Aleksander laid back, pulling Alina into his arms. Ā She snuggled close to him, her face buried in his chest, arms around his middle. Ā He held her close, his arms tight around her, one hand smoothing her slightly ruffled hair, lips on her forehead. Ā ā€œI love you, Alina,ā€ he said, speaking the words heā€™d felt for weeks. Ā ā€œI love you so much. Ā There is no one else, solnishka, only you.ā€ Alina lifted her face, kissing Aleksander softly. Ā ā€œI love you too, Sasha.ā€ Ā He felt his heart might burst, and he returned the kiss, a bit deeper this time. Ā ā€œRest, my love,ā€ he said, settling back into the pillows. Ā ā€œI will be right here. Ā I promise you, Iā€™m not going anywhere.ā€ Ā Alina nodded, kissing him once more before snuggling back into his chest. Ā For the first time, she had a warm bed, a full stomach, clean clothes, and a man who loved her, and would love her for eternity.

kitty i can't wait for your thoughts of Shadow and Bone asdfasfaw
Ok well I just finished and I have so many fucking thoughts. Most good! Some, less so. Part of it may just be my bias because Iā€™ve only read the Six of Crows duology and have little interest in actually reading the original trilogy, because I know how it ends and Leigh clearly hates me personally and doesnā€™t want me to be happy (/j), so I was already predisposed to be far more invested in the Crows and Darkling/Darklina segments (genuinely, the Mal/Malina scenes/storyline bored me to tears, and while I appreciate that the show went out of its way to change Malā€™s character to make him much less of a toxic douchebag [Iā€™ve read enough excerpts and explanations of his actions in the books to really loathe book!Malina], it isnā€™t enough to make me ship them when Darklina is right there), but I also donā€™t think itā€™s a stretch to say that the Crows absolutely stole the show.
Itā€™s actually kind of funny, because Iā€™d assumed they were only being so heavily marketed to hype the show up even more, since while thereā€™s a lot of TGT/SoC fandom overlap they are also two fundamentally different genres and Iā€™d wager there are a lot of people who are massive fans of one but not so enthused with the other, while remaining fairly insignificant to the overall plot. Turns out, they make up fully half of the showā€™s runtime (much to my delight). Which is part of what I think will help this series stand on its own, both as a book adaptation and simply as a fantasy TV series.
Iā€™ll put more of my story-specific thoughts under a cut, so thereā€™s lots of show spoilers to follow!
I know that a lot of early reviewers were saying that Alinaā€™s motivations and storyline revolved too much around Mal, and that really held true for me. It made sense in the beginning--he was the only constant in her life, she was thrust into something new, terrifying, and completely unfamiliar, and theyā€™d developed an unhealthy codependence as a coping mechanism for their childhoods and the traumas they faced, the lives they lead growing up in a war-torn country. But she started coming into her power, falling for the General--not just his power and charisma, but what she felt when she was with him. The way he helped her summon the sun, the way she felt free in a way she never had before.
Until it all went to shit--but the Darklina make-out scene in episode 5? Fucking iconic. Poetic fucking cinema. The way they were quite literally about to have sex on that wartable (and someone better write fic of that moment, what if they hadnā€™t gotten interrupted), and the General left, but then he ran back just to kiss her one more time... this is what OTPs are made of ok.
I think what really bothers me overall is that Alina ultimately lacked agency in her one storyline, pretty much the entire way through. She did make a few choices, but they were mostly incidental, and a lot of it was Alina desperately trying to get back to Mal rather than seizing her own power and destiny and running with it. The most prominent example is the end of episode 5--Alina is having happy make-outs and almost bones the General in his own war room, and then he leaves, and Baghra comes in and infodumps to her about how evil he is and how heā€™s only using her and she needs to escape.
I recognize that a lot of this is probably because thatā€™s essentially what happened in the book and Leigh is an executive producer for the show so she has a lot of shot-calling power. However, I really think that even in the book this plotline wouldā€™ve been better-served by having Alina make these discoveries on her own.
For example, imagine that the letters which were used as framing devices for episodes 2 and 3 were vitally important to the plot, rather than being one-offs that are mentioned a few times but not really affecting much of anything. Alina begins to get suspicious when she doesnā€™t receive word from Mal, and she starts wondering if her letters are even reaching him--so she starts snooping. She finds ashes in the war room hearth, late at night,, and recognizes a fragment of Malā€™s signature and larger piece of her own. She now knows that someone--possibly the General, but maybe that creepy priest guy, or someone else in the palace--is keeping her and Mal from contacting one another. So she starts snooping around even more. She asks the General leading questions, trying to figure out what the truth is of his intentions. She still feels this pull--this connection to him, and she hopes sheā€™s wrong, but sheā€™s not willing to just sit around and wait for the other shoe to drop.
The Winter Fete still happens, she still gets the hot make-out session with the General, and then when heā€™s called away, she snoops through his papers, looking for anything that can tell her the truth. She finds a hidden compartment filled with journals.
She reads about Aleksanderā€™s past (and, incidentally, wasnā€™t that supposed to be a huge moment in the books, him revealing his true name to her in private? kinda wish it had been kept that way in the show but who knows where theyā€™ll go with it in the future)--that leads to the flashbacks in episode 6. She feels for him, but she also reads further--she gets a firsthand look at his desire for power, something that began as a noble desire to save his people, but was twisted by a lust for vengeance (for his lost love and all the Grisha who were killed) and shot through with greed, the realization that if he found the Sun Summoner he could control the Fold, rather than just destroy it. He could create a new world where Grisha could live without fear--where Grisha could rule.
Alina is terrified. Whoever the General used to be--whatever humanity she saw flickering in his eyes, the way his heart fluttered when they kissed--she canā€™t trust that itā€™ll be enough to save her from plans centuries in the making. So she goes to Baghra, the woman who helped her discover her power, learn to channel it--the woman who always seemed to know much more than she ever let on. Baghra gives her side of the story--Alina got it from the Generalā€™s perspective first, now Baghra is telling her something framed much differently. She isnā€™t sure what or who to trust, but she knows that Baghra seems willing to help her escape--but rather than trusting her ā€˜loyal Grishaā€™, she makes the choice she made in the show, to choose the other path, and winds up with the Crows.
Idk how Mal and the Stag thing would fit into this (if it isnā€™t obvious by now, Mal just... doesnā€™t interest me), but Alinaā€™s story and her character arc would be so much stronger for it. And sheā€™s supposed to be the central character, so her story being weak and her agency so frequently being compromised ultimately hurts the show as a whole.
I know Iā€™ve gone on and on about Alina and the Darkling (look, Iā€™m a slut for enemies-to-lovers, and also lovers-to-enemies-and-back, so Darklina and Helnik are where so much of my investment is rooted--plus Kanej, but that almost goes without saying), but the true standouts of the series were the Crows. Inej, Kaz, and Jesper, and Nina and Matthias in their episodes, stole the show (along with the Darkling, Ben is far and away the best actor in the cast and I love that for him, but Freddy, Amita, and Kit are also amazing, and Danielle&Calahan were fucking phenomenal as Nina and Matthias--I do have to say, though, that the whole cast is really solid and has amazing chemistry).
They worked together so perfectly--Freddy and Amita communicated so much with their eyes alone, especially together, and a whole lot of their relationship dynamic is rooted in how they exist together, which really came through. The show altered the Crows timeline considerably (Iā€™m pretty sure Kaz wouldā€™ve been 14 during the original trilogy lol), so Inej is still at the Menagerie, but things like Kaz putting up the Crow Club for Inejā€™s freedom, the way Kaz needed her but could never bring himself to say it (until the end of the season dklhfgdkjfgh i SCREAMED)--the way Jesper played off the both of them, and itā€™s so obvious they all love each other even though theyā€™re criminals and thieves and murderers, and Kaz would never admit it (out loud--which actually feeds into my theory that his love language is acts of service; Kaz does things for the people he cares about, he never announces it and he will almost always try to downplay it, but the way you know he cares is if, for example, he puts his entire life, everything he built, up as collateral for your freedom), but theyā€™re a family.
One thing that I was kind of iffy about was Inejā€™s refusal to kill--but I thought it might be something they were planning to work into her overall character arc, and they did. It was the one line she hadnā€™t crossed--in the books, Iā€™d imagine that it took a while for Inej to wind up at that point, being willing to kill on top of everything else. So I actually like that they worked that into the Crows plotline, and Inej killing for the first time was to save Kazā€™s life.
Just like Kazā€™s first selfless act was to save her.
(Heā€™d deny it, of course. He protects his investments. He needed her for the job. But the truth is, he did it for her. And heā€™d do it again. Even if heā€™d never admit it.)
Meanwhile, Nina and Matthiasā€™ storyline was pretty much note-for-note according to their backstory as it was revealed in Six of Crows, and I loved every second of it. Their chemistry was perfect, their journey from enemies to begrudging allies to friends to maybe something more (Matthiasā€™ stomach cockblocking them when they were about to kiss had me fucking SCREAMING AT THE TV, and then of course the whole ā€˜betraying him to save himā€™ thing happened and I sobbed), and then suddenly right back to enemies.
Because from Matthiasā€™ perspective, he trusted a witch--believed in her, liked her, wanted her--and she turned on him. He has no idea that she wasnā€™t the one who knocked him out in the first place, and no reason to believe her, because as far as he knows, she just confirmed everything heā€™d ever been told about Grisha. That they are deceitful and treacherous, would turn on you as soon as look at you, that they are dangerous and not to be trusted. It wasnā€™t revealed in-show but I imagine Matthiasā€™ backstory is largely the same, which means that his entire family was slaughtered by Grisha when he was a young boy, and then he was turned into a brainwashed child soldier by the witch hunters and never knew anything else.
They are perfectly primed for their SoC arc next season and I, for one, am so stoked to see the rest of their journey. And if I slip Netflix a couple twenties, maybe theyā€™ll let Helnik have a happy ending please please please.
Anyway, yeah! I have a lot of thoughts but things are still percolating in my head so Iā€™ll probably float around the tags for a bit and let things settle. This is just a preliminary overview of my thoughts in the immediate aftermath of bingeing the entire show in one night kldfjghdkjfhgkjgf
EDIT TO ADD: I CANā€™T BELIEVE I FORGOT ABOUT THE TRUE STAR OF THE SHOW, M I L O
MILO BEST BOY. MILO THE MVP. MILO DESERVES ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THE WORLD AND I HOPE HE LIVES A HAPPY AND HEALTHY AND FULL LITTLE GOAT LIFE.

Lightā€™s Corruption- Chapter VIII
Summary: With few friends at the Little Palace, Alina must work to win the favour of her fellow grisha and their commander, who makes her feel light headed every time she sees him.
After training in Os Alta for two years, the king grows tired of waiting and demands the Sun Summoner joins a western post near the Fjerdan border along with the rest of The Second Army to test her abilities.
Something happens. Suddenly, Alina wants blood to run down the rivers and those who stand in her and The Darklingā€™s way will be blinded by her light and swallowed by his shadows.
It wonā€™t be pretty.
Pairing: The DarklingxAlina

Chapter 8: Alina the Baker
Grisha at the Little Palace had a day of the week off every other week, which meant that Alina could catch up on some precious sleep in the confines of her soft, warm bed filled with softer pillows. Even with the weak winter sun shining down on her, Alina could've slept all day and well into the night. In fact, it was even better, for she'd be warmer. There was no such thing as 'too much warmth' for her. The hotter, the better.
Curled up like a cat over the luxurious bed, the Sun Summoner intended to sleep all day and night.
Then there was a knock on her door.
She didn't hear it and rolled over in a most unnatural way.
The knocking got louder.
She began to stir.
"Get up, Starkov!" Genya yelled from the other side.
"Maybe if I don't make any sounds she'll leave." Alina thought, clutching her eyes tightly shut.
"You know I can go get the keys, but that'll only give me time to get angrier!"
Groaning, Alina threw herself onto the floor and made for the wretched door.
The redhead swung in with her usual grace, her kit in hand as she hummed a melody strange to Alina's ears.
Slowly, Alina followed her.
"Wash your face and come sit here." she instructed, pointing at the vanity.
After doing so, the Tailor began to work on her hair.
"Do I have somewhere to be?" Alina asked, yawning.
"No, but with the Winter Fete so close, I wanted to try some different styles for your hair and make-up, so we won't waste so much time on the actual day." she explained. "Besides, the Duke is still here, so the queen's daily naps have become longer, which only makes it harder for the Duke to talk whatever it is he wants to discuss with the king."
Alina made an odd face through the mirror; Genya smiled at her ingenuity.
"They've been fucking like ra-"
"Ah, ta-ta-ta, I get it." the Summoner closed her eyes and waved her hands, not wanting to picture any of it. "Does the king know?"
Genya snorted, joining two braids into one.
"Please, he's a dumb child."
Alina yawned again, loudly.
"Look, I don't think my hair matters too much for the Fete, so how about we take a nap?"
"Lazy."
"It's early."
"So?" a red, perfectly trimmed eyebrow rose softly. "Who would imagine the Sun Summoner herself wouldn't want to raise with the sun?"
"Technically, the sun is always out."
"I'm also using you as an excuse to get out of the Grand Palace."
"Can we do something else, then?"
"No!" she yanked Alina's hair once more and tied it. Leaning over her friend, she arranged the three mirrors which sat atop the vanity so the other woman could get a good look at it. "What do you think?"
Alina stared at her reflection. Two braids started at the top of her head and joined as one at the base of her neck.
"I like it."
Genya placed a slender finger to her lips.
"Too simple." With a flourish of her hand, Alina's hair was freed once more, falling in dark waves down her shoulders. "Turn."
When she did, her friend leaned over and took her face gently.
"I thought you were sleeping better." she mumbled as she ran her fingers underneath her eyes, ridding it of bags.
"I am, I think."
"Have you been summoning?"
"Yes, but, ā€¦"
"But?"
Genya leaned against the vanity, waiting patiently.
"I don't know." Alina said, looking down at her hands. "I know Baghra is horrible, and she still hasn't called back for me-"
"Then you go to her."
"I don't want to." Alina confessed, even though she probably should. Who else would teach her? The Darkling? He was always on and off the Little Palace grounds. "What if I mess up too bad and no-one's there to stop me?"
"So you haven't been summoning." Genya concluded.
"I have!" she fought back. "Just a little."
To prove her point, she closed her hand into a fist, opened up, and let a small orb of light fly up to Genya's face, not too close to make her uncomfortable. The Tailor watched the light with a small smile, and slowly reached out.
"I thought it might burn me."
"I think it would if I wanted to hurt you, or if I put more effort into it."
"But you love me too much."
"I tolerate you." she joked, moving the orb up and above her friend's head. "Now you look like a saint." she said, trying to turn the orb into a halo. It flickered and didn't exactly do as she commanded, only shone brighter over Genya's features.
The redhead shook her hand.
"Move. With this light, I can probably mask my age a bit more."
"Oh yeah," Alina said as she stood up, a playful smile on her face. "Because you're soooo old."
Alina didn't actually know how old Genya was, but she was sure they were about the same age.
"Tomorrow I will be a year closer to grey hair so," Genya's fingers went over her face, getting rid of imperfections Alina couldn't see. "One can never start too early."
"Tomorrow's your birthday?" Alina asked, starting to smile.
Genya didn't seem so excited. She merely shrugged.
"Yes."
"What are you planning on doing? Are you having a party? How many people will be there? Are presents mandatory? Cause I don't have permission to go to the city to get you one, and it doesn't really matter because I have no money and I don't have time enough to do something myself. What sort of ca-?
"Alina!" Genya had to raise her voice a little to get her overly excited friend to stop. "We don't celebrate birthdays here. It's just another day."
The Sun Summoner frowned.
"So, not even a cake? Or the day off?"
The Tailor huffed, amused.
"What for?"
"To celebrate." Alina was no longer bouncing on her heels.
"Trust me, the last thing anyone in these palaces would think of is to celebrate my silly birthday." she said as if it meant nothing.
Alina sat on the carpeted floor; legs crossed.
"That's depressing."
"If you say so." she remained indifferent.
She peered up at her friend and got an idea.
"Should we have some tea?"
"After I test how to work your face."
Later that night, standing outside the kitchens of the Little Palace, Alina ran her hands over her kefta and stood as straight as she could, putting on her best scowl. She hoped she had picked up a thing or two from Ana Kuya and Baghra
She entered the place like she owned it. At first, nobody took notice, too busy with their tasks. She cleared her throat.
Nothing.
She clapped her hands twice, like Genya did to call upon the attention of her miserable shrews -not that Alina considered the kitchen staff to fall into that category- and everyone in the kitchen turned to her, adopting various expressions at the sight of her.
No-one seemed to know what to do or what to say.
Trying to seem somewhat commanding, Alina cleared her throat once more.
"I need ingredients to make a cake." she stated.
One of the cooks swallowed hard before she began to speak.
"If you'd like a cake, Miss, I can make-"
"I want to do it myself, actually." she said, placing both hands behind her back and praying to all the saints she could remember -there weren't many- that they took her seriously.
Still, nobody moved.
Alina guessed that it wasn't every day that a Grisha showed up and demanded to cook something by themselves.
Not wanting the kitchen staff to feel offended, she spoke again:
"It's for a friend, you see, so I'd like to give her something I made with my own hands."
Slowly, the same woman who had spoken nodded, and then smiled tentatively.
"There's fresh eggs over there, Miss."
As it turned out, Alina did need some help after all. She knew how to make a basic cake, but as soon as she said it was a birthday cake, a middle-aged man jumped on her, offended on behalf of Genya.
"You can't just give your friend something so bland." he had said, his face red as he gestured widely at the cake, like it was a disgusting piece of work. One might have thought Alina had insulted his family. "You need to fill it with something, decorate it, give it life and flavour!"
Yes. That, she had no idea how to do.
He pushed her aside hastily.
"Saint can summon light but can't make a decent birthday cake." he muttered.
Alina's mouth hung open, offended, but she said nothing.
She hurried up the steps with a big cake held as if it were a precious new-born child when she heard him:
"Miss Starkov?"
"Holy Saints!"
She came to such a sudden halt, the cake moved precariously on its base.
"Yes, sir?" she called, tense, not daring to turn back.
"I am glad I came upon you;" The Darkling said, and she could hear him approaching.
It was so great to have him back, but why did he have to arrive at that time? Couldn't he have waited a few more minutes?
"Was there something you needed?" she asked.
"I can't believe myself, but please say 'no'"
"No, no, I just wanted to inform you that you shall start training with me tomorrow. I will see you at the entrance just before dawn."
"I thought you had no time for personal training." she was reminded of their conversation one season prior. "And that you didn't want to show favouritism."
It was probably stupid of her to say those things, to make him look like he couldn't make up his mind, but she find it hard to filter her thoughts when he was in the vicinity.
"I remember our conversation very well, Alina." he said, and she could hear his voice closer. It was so deep and smooth. Alina took a deep breath and tried to steady her heartbeat. "But some circumstances have changed, and I decided to make an exception."
Any other day, she would've melted at his feet at the way he spoke, as if it were almost a dirty, scandalous secret only meant for them.
But she had Genya's cake in her hands. It was big, and heavy, and he couldn't see it.
"That's great!" she said, and she meant it. "Thank you. Now if you'll excuse me, I have somewhere to go. Moi Soverennyi." she bowed, and then clutched her eyes shut, cursing herself silently. Nothing showed more respect for one's General than showing them their behind.
"Are you hiding something, Alina?" he asked, sounding far too amused to her liking.
"Nope."
"Right. And I am the Black Heretic." he almost snorted. Alina frowned; he sounded soā€¦normal when he did that. She wanted to hear it more often, she realized.
She craned her neck so she could get a glimpse at him. His eyes shone with mirth; the corner of his mouth was tilted up. She wanted to freeze him like that forever.
"It's nothing bad or illegal."
He chuckled, and his nose crunched up a little. Alina found it adorable, and she wanted to kiss him again, cuddle next to a fire by him, and make him laugh until his sides hurt.
"Alright, then. I shall let you be on your way." he took a step back, and Alina took a few steps forward before stopping at the end of the stairs.
"It's good to have you back."
She climbed up the stairs so quickly one might've thought a Squaller was pushing her up, and didn't give him opportunity to say anything back.
Alina moved her tea table to the centre of her room, where she placed the cake and a few flowers she had stolen from the various vases around the Little Palace to give it more life.
Smiling like an idiot, she closed her eyes and called her light just as there was a knock on the door.
Her light answered and her hand shot up, leaving a thin layer of golden dust hovering near the ceiling, giving the space a lovely ambience.
Hastily, she made sure everything was in order. The tea was hot, and there was plenty of kvas and wine for at least ten people. The kitchen staff had been more than happy to provide for her when they found out who Alina wanted to celebrate. Apparently, Genya was well liked among the otkazat'sya who worked on the Little Palace.
She hurried to open the door.
Genya waited on the other side, standing straight, an eyebrow arched up.
"You called for me? Is it urgent?"
"Yes!" The Sun Summoner answered, taking her friend's hand and dragging her across the expansive room.
She turned abruptly and placed her hands on Genya's eyes, blocking her view.
"For all the Saints, Ali, I don't have time to play around." she complained as she was dragged some more. "Just because the queen is spending another afternoon with the Duke of Balakirev doesn't mean I don't have other things to do and-"
Alina uncovered her eyes.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" she squealed, taking a step to the side and extending her arms to showcase the cake.
It was rectangular, decorated with red, blue and yellow flowers all over it. No white. Nothing about that cake was white.
The Tailor stared at it.
'Happy Birthday, Genya!' it read, in black, messy letters. While the middle-aged man from the kitchen had done most of the decorating of the cake, Alina had insisted on writing the words herself.
Still, The Tailor stared at it, mouth agape.
Slowly, Alina's smiled dropped, and looking at her friend in the eyes, she was horrified to find them wet.
A tear fell down Genya's pale face, and Alina rushed over to remove it.
"Gen?" she asked, extremely concerned. "What is it?"
But Genya couldn't say anything. Her mouth opened, then it closed, and it opened again as a small cry left its confines, the tears falling freely now, like a turbulent river.
Alina hugged her, rubbing her stiff back in circles.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." she said over and over again. "I just thought you might like it. I'm so sorry. Do you want me to throw it away?"
She felt how her friend shook her head, clinging to her with a vice like grip.
Alina was the one who wanted to cry now, seeing her closest friend in such a state made her eyes tear, and, oh damn, she was crying now as well.
They stood like that for a few moments, weeping like idiots, the hug a bit awkward since Genya seemed to hover over smaller Alina.
Slowly, the Tailor disentangled herself from the Summoner, and her friend let her go.
Genya delicately passed a finger underneath her eyes and adverted her gaze, although Alina could see the red in her eyes.
"Thank you, Ali. Truly." she said, her voice slightly hoarse.
Alina was at a loss of words.
"It's just a cake, Gen." she shrugged. "I just thought, we could celebrate together, if you wanted. We can invite anyone you want." she suggested.
Smiling just a little, Genya looked down at her hands and played with her fingers.
"No, it's justā€¦"she took a deep breath and let it out. Alina waited patiently. "No one ever really did this for me before." she said, raising her arm towards her cake.
"A birthday cake?" Alina asked slowly, her voice tremulous and trying not to sound sad. "Well, it's not a big deal!" she tried to shake it off, waving a hand with a forced smile. "Back in Keramzin there was only one plain cake per month for all the children so-"
"No, "Genya interrupted, her voice a mere whisper that cut through Alina's heart like a sharp blade. "I mean, celebrated. No one's ever done this much." her eyes were like crystal again. "Thank you."
Alina felt uncomfortable. She really did feel sad for her friend? Had no one ever truly celebrated her birthday? She knew she had been given to the queen at a young age, but even before that, had her parents ever made something for her? Or at least said anything on the day?
Alina didn't remember much of her parents, but she did remember once a year, her father coming up to her with a small, strawberry tart. He and mamma would hug her more than usual and kiss her cheeks and play with her all day until the sun went down and her eyes dropped closed of exhaustion.
"Chasing the waters." she thought, absentmindedly.
Even before the Little Palace, had Genya never had any of that?
"I'm just, sorry I couldn't do anything grander on such short notice." Alina tried to smile. "I have a present for you" she was now grinning, although so very nervous on the inside. She walked over to her desk and took the envelope. "I didn't have time to make something soā€¦ it was very last minute. She came back to stand before her friend and extended the envelope, which Genya took with a look in her eyes that resembled disbelief and wonder. Alina's cheek reddened. "It's nothing. Really. Open it."
Genya did as she was asked, and Alina bit her bottom lip, trembling as she recalled, word by word, what she had put down on the paper with her finest ink.
"I have a friend,
with bright, red hair.
She has a loudmouth,
and a brusque, yet marvellous touch.
Ā She and I have known each other,
for only a couple of months,
But I know that in my soul,
She's well settled for long.
Ā Some will say she's pretty
Others will say she's pricky,
and while those all ring through,
I know the person behind those needle-like replies.
Ā I have a friend,
with bright, red hair.
She's always there for me,
as I'll always be there for her."
It seemed as if an eternity had passed before the Tailor looked up, fresh tears in her eyes.
"Did you write this?" she asked, voice cracked. Alina nodded sheepishly, and Genya said: "This is the shittiest piece of poetry I have ever read."
The Summoner tried to not let her hurt show on her face, but a moment later she was being engulfed into another bear hug.
"I love it." Genya whispered almost fervently, clutching her tighter. "Thank you."
They spent the afternoon drinking tea, eating cake, talking and laughing. Genya had admired the piece for a long moment, as if trying to burn it into her memory, before she cut into the first two portions.
After a while, when there was no more tea and they grew tired of cutting, they sat themselves down on the carpeted floor, cake and all, and dug in directly from the base as they helped it pass through with kvas and wine.
"What do you mean?" Alina asked as they both laid on top of the soft, fur carpet of the floor, facing up, unable to move.
"Another rule of the General to keep his Grisha humble: no birthday parties." Genya answered, her speech slurred and the last part with a deeper tone, like she wanted to imitate Kirigan.
"That sucks!" Alina spat, just as drunk as her friend.
"Yeah!"
"Parties areā€¦cool." she stated, raising her index finger as if to make a point. "There's cake,"
"Ugh." Genya's hand flew down to her stomach. "I can't move."
Alina ignored her.
"There's presents, if you're not an orphan." she giggled at her own misery. "There's more cake, and there's people."
"There's always p-people at the Tiny Palace." Genya reminded her, kicking off her boots.
Alina did the same, her hands blindly reaching up to the couch for the small pillows.
"Yeah;" one of the pillows hit Genya in the face, and the Tailor whined about it as she placed it underneath her head. "But there's no birthday cake, thanks to General Handsomest. And no birthday parties." She counted to three in her head, shot up, grabbed the blanket at the back of the couch, and let herself fall again on top of the rug.
Saints, how had she and Genya managed to eat that entire monstrosity?
She threw the blanket over her body and kicked until it covered her feet. Genya clumsily pulled at it so it'd cover her as well.
Alina frowned.
"There's people at parties."
"Yes, Alina." Genya closed her eyes.
Alina's frown deepened, some of the blurriness in her mind clearing.
"People talk at parties."
Genya opened one eye.
"Are you going to get us in trouble?"
Alina, who could barely put the dots together as she thought of how full of cake she was and how funny everything looked from where she was laying on the ground, and how handsome the General was, and how she wanted to kiss him again and slap him for leaving her like that, turned her face towards her friend.
"Only if General Handsome caught us." she said.
Genya sighed.
"Fine. But turn your head to the other side. I don't want your puke in my face."
Giggling at the disgusting image, Alina did as she was told.
Their hands found each other underneath the blanket in a soft hold.
"Happy birthday, Gen." Alina mumbled, the lack of sleep due to her preparations for the afternoon and all the alcohol catching up to her.
"Thank you, Ali."
A/N: Hope you liked it! This is probably the last sweet chapter before things gradually start to get darker *evil laugh*

BOOK | Grisha Trilogy (Leigh Bardugo)
Shadow and Bone (2012), Siege and Storm (2013), Ruin and Rising (2014)
Tumblr media
I came to this world through the Netflix adaptation SHADOW AND BONE which came out earlier this year, and after, to my huge surprise, falling in love with these stories, I decided I would have to give these books a go as well. I've been aware of the Grishaverse for quite some time now but probably especially since SIX OF CROWS came out in 2016 and tumblr went completely batshit for one (1) Kaz Brekker. I am always kind of wary when it comes to entertainment that tumblr goes nuts for, especially when it is YA fiction, because I do not quite trust the general consensus (I was sorely disappointed by Donna Tartt's THE SECRET HISTORY which I found tremendously boring). So actually, I've been actively avoiding reading this book series until now. But then the Netflix adaptation happened and wellā€”you can blame (or thank) Ben Barnes, because he is pretty much at fault for this alone. Anyway, enough preamble.
I've just recently finished reading the last book of the trilogy and I have to say, I have to my surprise really enjoyed these books! I've also read the short stories THE WITCH OF DUVA after the first book, and THE TAILOR and THE TOO-CLEVER FOX after the second, and will be reading LITTLE KNIFE and THE DEMON IN THE WOOD before I move on to the Crows duology. I am reading the short stories according to publication year and not specific date, so they might not be completely in release order.
Reading SHADOW AND BONE I was very much always thinking back and comparing to the plot of the show since that was my original basis for the story. I am not too fond of first person narratives as I prefer things to be written in third person, but I've found that it did not bother me all that much in these books. What I realised though, was that I liked the show a bit more than the book, because it goes beyond Alina's story and the information a reader gets through her focalisation. We get to see Mal's story instead of only hearing of some of it when he and Alina are finally reunited once she leaves the Little Palace, which to me also made the character a whole lot more likable and interesting than in the books. I've also found that I really enjoyed the integration of the Crows in the show because it made the time leading up to and including the Winter Fete that much more interesting. Generally, I really liked most of the changes they made to the story for the adaptationā€”Alina scheming to get on the skiff, the Darkling's claw ring instead of the knife, that Alina seems to ride the entire way to Os Alta with the Darkling, the explicit consent given at the Winter Fete, erasing the scar, the fact that Alina and Mal don't kiss during the search of the stag. I would have loved to see some of the early scenes like in the book though, especially Alina and Mal on the way to Kribirsk and nearly getting run over by the Grisha carriages. I am also not entirely sure what I want to think about the change of Morozova's collar. I thought it was super dope that it was actually mended into her collarbone, but I am uncertain about her being able to completely melt it into her body and have it disappear like that. But generally, I really liked this first book. I think it does a pretty good job of establishing the world through Alina's eyes and gearing up the plot of the three novels.
SIEGE AND STORM then, of course, gave me my first look into the Grishaverse that was not completely informed by the adaptation. I was super surprised how quick it became clear to them that the Darkling had survived the events in the Fold and for him to catch up with them. I loved the sequences on the Volkvolny with Sturmhond though. And although I was aware that there was a character called Nikolai in this universe, it took me forever to catch on that he was Sturmhond, and when that reveal came I was very much happily blown away. I am super excited to see that character translated to screen (when, not if, the show finally gets renewed for a second season). I really enjoyed the hunt for Rusalye, the introduction of Tamar and Tolya, and for the role Genya gets to play in that sequence. Also, when first getting into this universe, my immediate first thought was, why don't they just fly over the Fold. Do airborne crafts not exist in this world (yet)? No balloons or something like it? And then of course Sturmhond delivered which definitely helped solidify how much I like his character. I am an incredibly visual person, so I think my favourite bits of this book are all somehow related to how much I would like to see them brought to screen (it's either that, or just how much I want to see Ben and Jessie be brilliant in scenes together). The bond between Alina and the Darkling I really enjoyed a lot and also absolutely the scene in the chapel at the end with him believing that she has finally chosen his side, only for her to then try and kill him with their combined powers and merzost. An absolutely extraordinary scene and if Netflix does not renew this show and I never get to see Ben and Jessie fucking nail this scene, I might just riot.
I had to take a bit of a break in-between books two and three because of uni responsibilities, but I finally got around to reading RUIN AND RISING and finished it two days ago. I am very unsure if I liked the ending or not, but more on that later. I was very glad when they finally got out of the White Cathedral and back to the world above ground, because as cool as this undergound world is, the Apparat creeps me out and so does religious culty stuff. I loved the plotting and scheming though and the fact that Alina can control shadows to some extent. Very cool. Prince Nikolai to the rescue once more was also fantastic and the existence of the Spinning Wheel fascinates me to no end. That I definitely want to see translated on screen. Make me a beautiful observatory to fall in love with, Netflix, make me one! Loved the return of Baghra as well, and generally all of her moments at the Spinning Wheel. The Darkling's attack too was right up my alley, and nichevo'ya!Nikolai? Fucking dope, I love it. This novel especially makes for some great visuals that I can't wait to see on the show. Just gimme, all of it. I liked that the Firebird was not the third amplifier, and I find the idea of Mal being the amplifier instead quite intriguing. What I am not so sure about is the actual ending. I once again really loved the bond scenes between Alina and the Darkling, and I now absolutely see why some fans are upset about him giving up his real name so quickly in the show. I do wonder how that is going to play out eventually. I did like the Darkling's endingā€”his desperation at Alina losing her power, his plea to her that there will be no grave, and him asking for her to speak his name one last time. And I loved that, as horrible of a person he was, as much gruesome things he did, Alina still understood what drove him and still felt a certain kinship to that, and ultimately did also mourn him in a way. There is this echoing of that line from the showā€”"we could have had this, all of it"ā€”if only he'd asked, and I absolutely love that. Their dynamic is just incredibly intriguing. The thing I am not sure about is Alina losing her power. Mal coming back to life, yeah okay maybe. The power of the Sun Summoner splitting and finding root in every otkazat'sya in the vicinity, that was amazing. But Alina completely losing her power? I don't know. I am not sure what I want to think about that. I see where it comes from but I don't think I like it.
Overall, I have to say, I really enjoyed this trilogy. I don't think I've read a YA series since the HP one which I grew up with. I am honestly very positively surprised by this fact. I am very excited to read on, especially since summer break has now officially started for me and I actually have the time to read. I know I mentioned some of the short stories in the beginning, but I think I will talk about those separately once I've read them all.
For now all that I can say is, damn you, Ben Barnes, for being this attractive as a bad guy, you alone are to blame that I am falling down this particular rabbit hole. Thanks so much.

favorite darklina moments?
Anon Iā€™m so sorry because you did not sign up for the crazy long post youā€™re about to get but..HERE WE GO! (TheĀ ā€œread moreā€ no longer functions on mobile and Iā€™m SO sorry to everyone this annoys.)
Tumblr media
uM??? Soft. Literally the moment I knew I was trash. He takes his glove off to touch her??? Romance???
Tumblr media
Okay so a few things here. 1. This is just my stupid emotions clouding my judgment but I think that if Alina hadnā€™t cut and run after Baghra told her the truth about him, she probably would have been able to convince Aleks not to expand the fold and instead to destroy it. Why? Well, I know he is playing her throughout the first book but heā€™s showing a lot of self-awareness here. Knowing heā€™s the only Darkling means heā€™s calling his own deeds greedy and evil. I think he might have been convinced to right those wrongs under the right circumstances and I like the vulnerability of this conversation for that reason. In R&R he tells Alina that he only decided to expand the fold and force her to take the stagā€™s amplifier after she left andĀ ā€œchoseā€¦ā€ (clearly meaning chose Mal). Is that a viable motive for the murders he committed afterward? No lmao but Iā€™m trash. 2. Alina is literally 24/7 checking him out. This is her POV. She is constantly calling himĀ ā€œperfectā€ and other very complimentary things šŸ¤£ 3. The inherent longing and romance of that last line. Iā€™m sorry but thatā€™s Good Shit and I love Alinaā€™s dubious response as much as the declaration itself lol.Ā
Tumblr media
I just love the cute lightheartedness of this scene and also the fact that he has taste. I mean we been knew because of The Aesthetic, but still. He knows garish when he sees it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This whole scene because reasons. Idk man itā€™s just hot. Itā€™s a YA book so we arenā€™t going to get the kind of smut I crave but the pining that results from this moment being cut off early is MY SHIT and I love the unexpected soft politeness of what he says before he leavesā€¦
Tumblr media
Bitch!!!! Say yes!!!Ā
Tumblr media
This!!!!!! I wanted powerful and uninhibited Alina SO BAD. And obviously, so did he. (And lbr, so did Alina herself lol).
Tumblr media
Idk I just love the angst of this. This is a clear admission that just like he was playing her, she was affecting his judgment too. He was a fool. A fool in love maybe??????? Lol ignore me.
Tumblr media
On one hand, this is a bit creepy and possessive. But on the other hand I fucking love it. Theyā€™re both deeply lonely and at the end of the day? Thatā€™s the kind of tragic OTP I thrive on.
Tumblr media
And see, THIS is why itā€™s so important that we get the story in first person. Because while the Darkling IS very problematic and I can see why people who hate the ship are squicked out to some extent, what matters is that we know that Alina still struggles with her feelings about him throughout the whole trilogy. After everything he has done a part of her still wants him and a part of her still acknowledges that he accepts her power in a way no one else really does. Also, lol at her once again commenting on how good he looks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What can I really say? I live for this. My favorite moments in Alinaā€™s story are ones where she allows herself to confront, if only in her mind, her own desire for power (ā€I was eagerā€) and I love that even while she just admitted to loving Mal, she canā€™t help herself with Aleks.Ā ā€œI could drown in it.ā€ Bitch, me too.Ā
Tumblr media
Just the way this is worded idk. Sheā€™s literally killing him. Heā€™s been evil and conniving af. Thatā€™s not lost on me. But Alina doesnā€™t hate him. Thereā€™s no,Ā ā€œJust a little longer so I can kill this assholeā€ orĀ ā€œJust a little longer so I can send this monster to hell where he belongs.ā€ No. Sheā€™s sending himĀ ā€œto the next worldā€ and sheā€™s gonna follow? Ok. Nothing to read into that at all.
Tumblr media
Everything about this!!!!!Ā ā€œI respect your ruthlessnessā€??? A line that would work on me lmao. Also I live for hurt and vulnerable Aleks showing this bitterness. Heā€™s allowing her to see that she hurt him, you know? Also love that itā€™s honesty when she says she wanted to see him. There is so fucking much mutual pining in this ship itā€™s torture. And even after everything theyā€™ve done to one another theyā€™re still like this!! How dare they! Let me live!!!!
Tumblr media
Idk I love this because theyā€™re such opposites in everything from appearance to ideology but they still have this pull on each other that drags them each nearer the middle. He brings out Alinaā€™s ambition and she brings out his softness. Also,Ā ā€œI had a taste for you onceā€ is probably my favorite line in all their interactions. I know everyone else lovesĀ ā€œmake me your villainā€ but this line is just sexier somehow and it comes from Alina! Alina toying with Aleksā€™s desire?? MY SHIT!
Tumblr media
Give me dark!Alina! GIVE IT TO ME!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SO MUCH in this passage. This is in R&R so by this point the damage and history and pain in this ship is off the charts and Alina is still sitting here thinking about how she wants him.Ā ā€œI didnā€™t want to go ā€¦Ā  I wanted this whispered confidence.ā€ We love to see it. And then thereā€™s his name. I actually love his name. Itā€™s my husbandā€™s name lmao (though he spells it with an x). And I agree with Alina that itā€™s kind of laughably cute that the big, bad Darkling has such a common (but pretty!) name.
More than that, I feel like a lot of people overlook the significance of this moment. In ā€œThe Demon in the Woodā€ we learn that Aleks was on the run for basically his entire youth. Heā€™s gone by fake names since he was a child. That story is so heartbreaking, being in his head while heā€™s coaching and drilling himself to adapt to these false names and identities in a convincing way. He couldnā€™t share his real name with anyone. But what must that have done to his sense of self? Especially being so young, his ability to develop an identity like a normal person was taken away. He must have wanted, for years, maybe even centuries, to be able to be his real self. But heā€™s clearly never trusted anyone with the truth. Until Alina. And this isnā€™t soft, naive S&B Alina. This isĀ ā€œruthlessā€ book 3 Sankta Alina, his enemy in every sense of the word who has multiple times left him for dead (he deserved it but thatā€™s not my point). And he trusts her with this and shares this intimacy with her and it makes me weep ok?
Tumblr media
This is sexy. What else can I possibly say? Itā€™s hot. My favorite piece of Darklina art is from this scene lol but I wish there was more fanart of this moment that actually depicted them as they are, with him basically sitting and Alina all up in his junk between his legs. I accept the Darklina isnā€™t canon but there are no other shippy scenes in the trilogy that match this one imo. THEIR POWER. Itā€™s so good lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She literally killed him lmao. She was literally the one doing the stabbing here. She ended his long life and heā€™s still being sweet with her?????? The last thing he wanted to hear was her voice and his name???? Ok thanks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
K the funeral scene broke me but I am glad they gave him a proper funeral. But what Iā€™m really here for? Alina Starkovā€™s last line of dialogue and last thought in The Grisha Trilogy is about Aleks and no one can take that away from me.
Anyway sorry for the giant trashy post I just have a lotĀ of feelings about them. This is almost every scene so I failed to tell you my favorite moments rofl. Theyā€™re all my favorite. I guess if I had to pick three? The Winter Fete scene, Alina trying to kill them both in the chapel, and ā€œlet me.ā€ Oof.Ā
Thanks for tolerating my insane and overwhelming love for this ship!!!!!

Little Witch - Part 19
The Darkling x Reader
You were fast asleep in the safety of your chambers, tucked into the comforting sheets and their warmth as the contrasting winter air blazed outside. You could hear a faint shuffle outside your door, guessing it was the rotation of guards you ignored it and turned in the bed, facing away from the door but stopped short when the door opened. You shot up, squinting in the dark to see who'd just entered your chambers in the dead of night. Talk about being vulnerable. The figure moved from the door and shut it but you heard the faint sound of the lock as it turned. Your heart started hammering in its chest as you felt your shadows coil around you.
'Did I wake you?' His voice was smooth and full, and through the darkness you managed to make out his glistening kefta. Your shoulders sagged in relief as you lay back down, shadows dropping and retreating.
'More like 'Did I scare you?' You relaxed back onto your side, eager to return to your slumber. 'I'm going back to sleep' you mumbled, the sound muffled by the sheets half covering your face.
You heard him taking off his outer layers then the thud of his boots as he disposed of them and walked towards the bed. His hands were absolutely freezing cold as he reached for your waist and pulled you into him
'You're so cold' You whined but he merely chuckled and pulled you closer. With a gentle kiss to your temple, Aleksander quickly dozed off right after you, enjoying a good night's sleep with you cradled in his arms.
*****
You woke and he was gone, the only sign left of him being the rumbled cushion and gloves on the nightstand. You stretched dramatically and dressed quickly, ringing for two breakfast trays to be brought to the General's war room. You carried stacks of documents in your hands, most of them boring and pointless, as you walked the short distance to his quarters.
'Good Morning' He was standing with Ivan next to the round table with his arms crossed, studying the Shu border with furrowed brows but relaxed them once he heard you enter. You dropped the papers on his desk with a sweet forced smile 'I come bearing gifts. Oh and breakfast.' Aleksander looked amused and sighed
'That's all Ivan, thank you.' Ivan only acknowledged you with a nod before leaving the room as instructed by his Commander.
'Thank you so much dear for leaving me with all your paperwork.' You slapped your hand against the messy pile 'I don't even know what half of it is'
'You'll learn in time I'm sure'
'If you think you're going to do that again you are sorely mistaken. It is possible to read whilst sitting in a carriage is it not?' As he went to reply, a servant wheeled in a table of breakfast trays and your stomach rumbled at the sight. You thanked them and uncovered your plates, mouth-watering at the sight of fresh fruit and pastries.
'You'd be sad to know there's no herring' You pretended to gag and his laugh echoed along the walls. What a pleasant sound.
'I think I'll manage' He sat down next to you and spooned extra sugar into his porridge. For a moment you ate in comfortable silence, enjoying your food.
'Why were you back so late last night?'
'I wanted to avoid the fleet of performers arriving for the fete. There's already a long line of them at the gates.' You hummed as you bit into the flaky pastry.
'What color are you wearing to it?'
'What do you mean?' You eyed him curiously as he lay down his teacup.
'What color kefta are you wearing to the fete?'
'I haven't thought about it yet. I have so many lavish ones I doubted I needed to have any more made' You chuckled 'Why do you ask?'
'I requested that Alina wear black'
Oh.
'And will she? I know she refused the first time.'
'I had Genya make sure of it'
'Oh I get it, is this your way of politely telling me to not wear black?' Your voice contained no anger or resentment. You had agreed to his plans and it would be petty of you to be upset now.
'No, you can wear it if you wish. It's always been my favorite color on you. I'm just letting you know' You took the napkin and dabbed at your mouth.
'Well the fete is tomorrow, I should decide quick.' You rose from your seat and took the mug of tea with you.
He was out of his seat by the time you fully stood and wrapped his strong hands around your waist, keeping you close to him.
'Don't be jealous, at the end of the day I come to you, not her.'
'I'm not jealous Your eyes whipped to his.
'No?'
'No.' You forced the sternness into your voice, solidifying the word but it only sent a smirk to his face. 'What are you smirking at?'
'I missed you' He crashed his lips to yours in brute force, knocking the air out of you. He was eager and greedy, wanting you to himself. You let yourself indulge, holding his face in one hand while the other still held the mug of hot tea.
'I have to go Aleksander.' You pulled away and he pouted, like actually pouted. He looked like a big baby who'd just been denied dessert and it ingrained in your mind. The adorableness filling your heart full for the rest of the workday.
*****
'Saints can I ever catch a break.' You groaned with your head in your hands.
You wanted to run and escape to wherever was quiet and peaceful, where you would be left alone for at least 2. fucking. minutes but no, the people of Os Alta and its performers were ready to watch you rip out your hair from frustration. The Queen's messengers were drilling a hole through your head and your Grisha demonstrators were throwing a huff about their limitations 'Don't light anyone on fire' was simple and reasonable, so why were the Inferni fussing about it?
'Saint's whats wrong with you'
'Zoya I don't have time for this right now.' If Grisha never got sick, then why was there a headache forming in my head?
'Just here to pass along a message-'
'-who isn't' you scoffed
'-let me finish, it's about Alina's double for the dinne-'
'Let the General deal with that. I'm at my wits end here.'
'But I don't want to tell him, hence why I came to you.' She sat down on the chair next to you and huffed.
'Put on your big girl breeches Zoya. I'm really not in the mood.'
'Must you always be so rude?'
'Oh my Saint's you're one to speak'
'But I'm never nice so there's the difference.'
'Are you still here just to berate me?'
'Is there something you want me to do?' Although she was rude, Zoya showed her kindness in other forms.
'Can you speak with the head of Palace guards and go over security breach protocols? I don't want to risk anything with so many foreign dignitaries in the building'
'I would love nothing more.' She sarcastically said and left you alone. It wasn't long before you accidentally dozed off in the midst of all the chaos.

Note
is it just me who thinks that both versions of the darkling suck at manipulation? it's obvious that show Darkles was just not trying at all because he fell in love pretty much at first sight, but I don't think book Darkles was very good at it either? Alina never really becomes dependent on him at all, he very obviously did not set out to seduce her romantically (despite the retcon in R&R) and even seems to be avoiding her at points. Alina is never convinced at any point that he's into her beyond physically lol. I definitely do not believe book Darkles when he tried to say he wouldn't have collared her if she hadn't run away though - she was going to end up in it eventually no matter what. I think he did a good job of feeding her insecurity around her summoning but beyond that...I mean he couldn't even get her to be loyal to HIM let alone all the Grisha. What are your thoughts?
I don't know what was in the script, but Ben plays the Darkling like a lovesick puppy with TERRIBLE game because he hasn't been on a date in like 300 years ā˜ ļø
Like, the whole "darkles manipulated alina" narrative in the show is a fucking joke to me because all I see is fucking idiot who is genuinely like *shocked pikachu face* when Alina hates him for putting that collar on her like "whaaat? She doesn't like that I killed a magical deer for her and used it's antlers to gift her this awesome necklace that gives her a massive power boost??? Why is she yelling at me like that??"
Like, dude. Buy her dinner first šŸ˜‚
The only time I feel like he actually manipulates her is when he implies they're going to destroy the Fold but then he's like "pfffft why would be destroy it when it's the greatest weapon we have" and she's like "YOU LIED!!" and then Ben has this truly hammy moment where he does this dramatic ass villain turn while his face is obscured by darkness but even then it's like "Yeah, she hates me now but she'll forgive me in t-minus 15 years and then the wedding is back on" šŸ¤”
The story tries so hard to be like "he's pURe EviL!!1" and it's literally just darkles looking at Alina with literal TEARS in his eyes or even bothering to show so much genuine emotion when he doesn't even have to because Alina isn't even in the damn scene to witness it šŸ˜‚
Like that time he was acting like a heartbroken 15 year old when he gets roasted by Kaz or stands on the other side of the door after Alina left and all you can do is point and laugh at this immortal dumbass like
Tumblr media
So maybe there was *an attempt* by Show!Darkling to manipulate Alina at the start but that pretty much went out the window when she first started yelling at him and he immediately decided to plan their immortal married life together like a hopeless dork:
Tumblr media
In conclusion: show!Darkling is a hopeless simp whose entire eViL pLaN got derailed because he caught feelings for an angry sunbeam šŸ˜Œ
As for book!Darkling, he at least didn't get his plan derailed until much later and unlike his show counterpart, actively HATED his crush on Alina? Like it was a massive fucking inconvenience to him and he'd be so embarrassed to see the absolute simping clownery that show!Darkling got into that he'd probably fake his death again.
But the other thing about the book is that book!Alina herself is so desperate for approval and a place to belong that she makes it very easy to manipulate and play on her emotions.
The reason book!Darkling comes across as more morally grey is because a lot of his actions always end up serving like two different purposes (one of them working in Alina's favour, and the other self-serving):
He deliberately keeps Mal's letters away from her to try and cut her connections to the past, but this actually ends up being a good thing because even Alina later admits that had he not sabotaged her communications with Mal, there's no way she would have learned to summon her power on her own (In the show, it comes across more like Darkles is low-key jealous that Alina has a strapping boyfriend and he probably cries himself to sleep reading their letters lmao)
He initially stands up to Alina getting railed on by Baghra when her summoning is weak because he doesn't really need her to be a good summoner if he can just strap a collar on her BUT this ends up helping Alina feel better about herself because he's like the only person who ever advocates for her or gently encourages her
He lies to her about destroying the Fold but his plan actually makes a lot more sense, especially looking at the complete clusterfuck Ravka became after the Fold got destroyed lmao šŸ˜‚
You could argue his first kiss is pure calculation because he wanted Alina to be loyal to him with something other than duty or fear, but his second kiss at the Winter Fete was literally just him losing his cool and he even admits he doesn't want to give in to his "weak" puny mortal emotions, but this implies there is still some humanity left in him
Had Baghra not shown up to warn Alina, it's likely Alina would have worn the stag collar with 100% consent because she was looking forward to it, but she likely would not have consented to him using her powers to expand the Fold so when he says "that was never my intention" with regards to collaring Alina, I think he really means that it was never his intention to collar her without her consent but he decided he was gonna do it anyway once she ran off....however, I think he's being deliberately vague by leaving off the part where he planned on using her power to destroy a village lmao
So while I think book!Darkling definitely manipulates her because he's a man for whom the ends always justify the means, it still leaves me feeling kinda "meh" about the whole thing because had Alina been a more morally grey character herself, they could have literally just taken over the world???? the wasted potential šŸ˜
