A lot of people like to say that they don't care about your aesthetic or how your blog looks as long as they like your writing style and can see your muse interact with theirs. This is false. Just because a blog looks good aesthetically, like a really nicely edited pinned post, a really fancy carrd, fonted and colored writing style, small and nice icons, does not make them a good writer. They can still be illiterate, keep repeating same words, not be creative. But that's not what matters for most people from MY EXPERIENCE that I've seen. But they always seem to get a lot of followers and a lot of people want to interact with them. However, you can be the best writer, someone who makes the roleplay fun, exciting, someone who makes people eagerly wait for a reply. And if your blog doesn't necessarily look fancy, it's a higher possibility you won't get a follow back. This is very sad. And I'm speaking from experience because I fell for this before too. Just because someone doesn't have cool gifs and small icons doesn't mean they don't put in effort. maybe they just can't. Maybe they don't know how to. And just because they do put in that effort, doesn't mean they can write that good. This is not to down anyone, I promise. I'm just speaking from what I have observed. I've had tons of mutuals on here who didn't necessarily have anything fancy going on. And I would see them keep making starter calls and ask for interactions. Then I look at fancy blogs and they speak about how they got tens of threads, hundreds of asks, they're getting overwhelmed by it, which is really nice, I suppose? Alright! So, now that we have the full line-up of the Level 10 Bell’s Hells artwork, I think it’s about time I sat down and gave my personal opinions that nobody asked for about everyone’s styles.

Chetney Pock'o'pea

While I appreciate the more active pose and visible armor as opposed to his more unassuming original design, I am very off-put that he completely abandoned his original color scheme and all shreds of his original aesthetic. I also think the tracksuit is a bit much—listen, I’m a fan of toeing the line of what fashion belongs in a fantasy setting, but I’m pretty sure this fully vaulted over the it and did a full backflip and three-point landing into ridiculous. 3/10

And unfortunately, the same must be said for his Lycan form. This artwork feels like a serious downgrade from the original Chetwolf, which honestly filled me with a shock of horror each time he popped up. The only reason it is higher than base-Chet is that Chetwolf is still a werewolf, and werewolves are badass. 4/10

Laudna

Laudna, on the otherhand, is a total glow-up from her original design. Everything about her design ties together and brings in perfectly her aesthetic and backstory, from the haunting tree embroidery on her dress (akin to the Sun Tree she was hung from) to the little Pate birdhouse backpack (an homage to the Baba Yaga forest witch imagery she picked up), all the while looking so much like the elegant and imposing Delilah Briarwood. Easy 10/10 for me.

Fresh Cut Grass (F.C.G.)

F.C.G.'s new art...isn't bad, but I'm not as wowed by it as some others on this list. Something has clearly changed here in the choice to include his new blue jacket, and I approve! I'm also a fan of the wires having more definition and appearing more purposefully stylized, as if he's taking better care of himself...but the pose and the style just feel a bit lacking to me. 5/10

Fearne Calloway

Honestly, my only gripe with this outfit is the upper-half of her bustier. It feels very cluttered and like there is a lot of fine detail that just ends up being all meshed together. That would be my other only other gripe, too—there's a lot of small, fine details here that makes her feel cluttered. Which, honestly, fits her as the sneaky little hoarder that she is! But yeah, I would've done something else, something cleaner, with the upper half of her bodice. Also, while I know she is a Druid, I don't think she needs the plant growth on her legs... 8/10

Imogen Temult

I would just like to point out that this outfit was unveiled to us as Imogen's choice for winter-wear while traveling through the Crystal Sands Tundra. Is it sexy? Definitely. Is it my personal taste? Mm, not really, but I can see the appeal. Am I upset that even after the semi-canonization of her needing glasses, this bitch is still not a sexy glasses-wearing nerd? Absolutely—but the biggest sin this outfit does is fail to be climate-accurate. -1/10 for improper environment protection, and 7/10 for the outfit itself.

Orym, Savior Blade of the Tempest

I am incredibly torn here. Because, when it comes down to the armor itself, this is a clear winner. Orym's new uniform is a perfect upgrade from his original more humble and simple apparel, becoming much more about function and protection, while still retaining his svelte and limber appearance. The noted upgrade to Seedling is also nice, though I wish it was a bit more pronounced. What pulls me back from really loving this design, though, is his proportions—I feel like his head is way too big, or his limbs are way too skinny. Over all, I have to give this an 8/10.

Ashton Greymoore

Remember at the start how I said I'm all for toeing the line of what fashion belongs in fantasy settings? Yeah, this fucks! From the first episode, we knew that Ashton was a punk, and this just picks that up and runs with it in such a cool, fun way. I legitimately want this entire outfit—fuck cosplay, I'd just wear this irl! It leans enough on his old design to be recognizable, but pops out as truly his own. And the hammer looks wild—I can't wait to see that thing really pop off like crazy in the next fight. Definitely a 10/10 from me!

Hello there, so I’m going to include games in this recommendation that may not be explicitly for two players, but can be conceivably be run with one player and one GM. This is because a number of duet games are built to provide roles for the players that don’t slot easily into the “GM” and “Player” role. I hope you find something that fits both of your goals!

GROK?!, by Lester Burton.

GROK?! is an adventure role-playing game where you assume the role of an adventurer in a gonzo world of boundless plausibility and use your ingenuity and resourcefulness to overcome strange and perilous threats.

Planet Grok was once a haven for trans-dimensional migrants and a bastion of advanced technomancy, until a cataclysm rendered it a desolate hollow planet. Now, feral monstrosities haunt its chasms, cities float among the clouds, and a derelict space station encapsulates the planet and bathes the world in perpetual phosphorescent radiation. Yet, a new era of enlightenment is dawning. Civilizations grow from the ashes, relics of immense power await those who would learn their lost secrets, and threats of caste warfare loom as leaders vie for power. All the while, a creeping black nothingness peers up through the hollow of the world.

This is a game heavily inspired by a lot of heavyweight games that exist in the ttrpg scene, such as Cortex Prime, Savage Worlds, Numenera… the list goes on. The creator describes a “universal resolution” system that is also “fail forward.” This means that you use the same resolution mechanic for every action your character takes, and instances where you fail still move the story forward. I won’t say that it prioritizes other methods before combat, but it certainly looks like you can play it that way. Aesthetically it’s a bit more science-fantasy, but the digital copy is only a dollar, and the Quickstart is free to download on the Itch.io page, so it might be worth checking out.

A One In A Million Chance At Adventure, by Jocher Symbolic Systems.

This is a game where you play the roles of, often unwilling, sometimes zealous, pawns in the cosmic octarine coloured narrative. Your character is not necessarily a "hero" per se, instead one could possibly see it as being important to the story. Characters like yourself do have a knack for not dying as often as a common mortal (or undead if that has been your unfortune). With this follows that you'll naturally have a higher chance of actually, possibly, doing some heroic deeds, just by sheer mathematical logic. Unless, of course, you are the type of adventurer who'd prefer a cup of hot tea and soft slippers and a reliable day job. That does severely reduce the odds of let's say beheading a mythical beast of ill repute or befriending the immodest wood nymphs of Howondaland.

This is a game designed for two or more players, one picking up a GM role and the rest acting as players. It’s a loving tribute to the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, and is therefore free! It is a setting that provides a tongue-in-cheeck reference to classic fantasy, and uses a 2d10 system to follow your character’s humorous attempts at becoming an adventure, and all of the one-in-a-million outcomes that make their stories interesting.

I like that this game uses narrative points to give your character a chance to do something really cool in situations where they don’t have a realistic chance of success. I also appreciate the de-centring of violence in that there are no health points or systems in place to keep track of physical harm. This doesn’t mean that conflict is impossible - it just means that it has to be figured out collaboratively between the players and the GM. What there is a great deal of focus on, is magic, with some really interesting effects that could pop up whenever you cast a spell.

This game is cheeky and knows exactly what it’s trying to emulate, and if you’re familiar in any way with Discworld, I think you should check it out.

Mausritter, by Losing Games.

Take up the sword and don the whiskers of a brave mouse adventurer in Mausritter, the rules-light fantasy adventure roleplaying game.

It’s a huge and dangerous world out there, and it does not look kindly on a small mouse. But if you are very brave and very clever and just a bit lucky, you might be able to survive. And if you survive long enough, you might even become a hero amongst mice.

Mausritter is, at its heart, an OSR game, and while many OSR games are pretty dark in tone, one thing that they excel at is providing characters with situations in which violence can’t be the answer. The costs of trying to fight something as a mouse are just too high - cats and owls and other large creatures are dangerous endeavours that only large large groups of mice have a chance at defeating. So for a two-player game, you’re going to understand narratively the necessity of using your wits. This game gives you a setting that makes it possible to have a game that mirrors more closely some themes in epic fantasy as well, including a magic system with spells that can give characters an even bigger toolbox when it comes to solving problems.

The Weaver’s Observatory, by Gem Room Games.

The Weaver’s Observatory is a two player dramatic fantasy adventure about an explorer seeking to change their destiny by asking a boon of Fate herself. Set in an ancient tower outside time, the Climber shares memories of their life as they cross a moat of living dye, ascend through the threads of discarded fates, and navigate the mechanisms that construct the fate of all living things without knowing if their request is even possible.

While this game doesn’t explicitly call the two roles within it GM and PC, it was designed for Tunnel Goons, which does use those sorts of roles. In The Weaver’s Observatory, one person is a solitary explorer, climbing a tower to request a boon from Fate. The other is Fate itself, representing the tower and the few inhabitants that reside within. The solitary Climber will encounter puzzles, hazards and guards that they will have to solve, avoid, and reason with - so I don’t see much of combat set within either the style of gameplay or the structure of the adventure.

This is a game that can be played as a one-shot, or can be set within a larger campaign. The entire game uses weaving metaphors and iconography, to set a tone for the overall narrative. If you like a tone that is intentional and purposeful, and want to tell a story that has great consequences for the person involved (and possible for a larger world), then this game is definitely worth checking out.

Want to play old flash games and animations? Here are a few ways.

Note: links are underlined, all links are to webpages except for the two purple links where noted. These link to directly to file downloads. This isn't an install guide, just a list of resources and the occasional tip. Please use caution. I cannot stress this enough. Flash was killed as it had a lot of security issues and a lot of work to fix. Some of these solutions are still just as dangerous as ever.

Ruffle

Ruffle is a flash emulator that seeks to run flash with higher security than old flash player. This is much safer than the other ways listed below but for now it doesn't have an amazing range. Basically nothing developed in 2010s is certain to run and much of it doesn't work. But it's a cool project so if you can consider donating to them as that can seriously help speed the development along. This is the only Linux solution.

Classic Browsers

There are a few browsers that still support the flash plugin. Since these use the original flash program, they are far less secure than before so please know the risks. Flash was a poorly-sandboxed monstrosity and that has not changed in the slightest.

First, you'll need to download and install flash player: (note: these links will start downloading immediately) Win Mac

Waterfox Classic

Waterfox is a really good browser that I use on some of my computers. It has a really clean UI. Classic, however is similar to the two below. It is also the only apple friendly option (y'all have gotta stop buying apple products I swear to god you're killing indie devs). Do not try to update Waterfox classic as that will remove flash support.

Pale Moon / Basilisk

These two are more or less the same and are developed by the same team(Basilisk is now developed by a different team). They are forked from an old Firefox repository and are built up to work with modern systems. There are differences between them but those aren't really relevant. Both have flash support. In cases where Waterfox classic hasn't worked, these browsers have worked (like for me).

Update: Pale Moon, as I have recently discovered, has a flash sandboxing tool that you can install that was apparently integrated into the browser. You can still use the tool, but they state it isn't necessary. This means that flash should be a lot more secure than it used to be! Pale Moon is perhaps the best option, though note that it still depends on the original flash application meaning that while running flash in Pale Moon is secure other applications could still take advantage of the flash software.

*basilisk is no longer being developed so no idea how long it will last.Basilisk is now being maintained by a different team but as I understand no major features have been added.

Danknet Explorer

Those of you who follow me have heard me bring this up a few times now. I'm working on a clone of the Pale Moon browser that revives old IE6/7 aesthetic and features. Of course, as a result of being a Pale Moon clone, using their exact code base, DNE runs flash also! So, really, this is the best browser to play flash on >.> I'm want the browser to bolster the indie web community so if you are a webmaster or a frequenter of the indie web, suggest a feature through this google form or do so as an issue on the github repository and I'll try to make it happen!

Honorable Mention: Puffin Browser

Puffin is a really safe solution to flash. As far as I understand it they basically play the flash animation/game on their servers and return the results to you. This makes it safer for you as none of the flash stuff is ever handled on your computer. So why did I only give this an honorable mention? I haven't used it myself so I can't confirm anything about it really and I've heard that this is only available through a subscription service. There may also be other limitations. I don't know what's true but I wanted to give it a mention. I just don't know enough about it so you will have to look into that yourself. It felt wrong to not include it though.

Standalone Players

Flash Standalone Player

Flash had a standalone player mostly for debugging. If you download the SWF file of a game you can open it with the standalone player. I think you need the flash program installed so see above. Keep in mind this is also original flash player so it is just as unsafe as with the classic Browsers. Use at your own risk.

Newgrounds Player

Another standalone player, this one is a little nicer. Probably recommend it more than the official flash one. No certainty on how sandboxed it is.

Final Note

For future proofing, consider downloading and setting up a Windows 7 virtual box and running through that. Action/timing flash games will suffer a lot but at least many games will be playable via the above methods. If you want to get around action/timing game issues consider dual booting an old system or getting an garbage laptop that runs an old windows version. Here's a Windows 7 iso from internet archive.

Windows 7 also has security issues since it's past end of life so use cautiously. Safest bet is just to have it on a completely different system.

#1 - The Classic Yellow Uniform (S1 version)

Simple but effective. The TNG uniform designs serve as usual. I would actually wear this. He looks good in it. It’s very basic, and the later uniform designs are better, of course, but I’m bumping up the rating in it because his tits look gorgeous.

#2 - Sherlock Data pt 1

It’s just a pipe, but it adds SO MUCH. You can tell he’s really throwing himself into the role. Boy reads a book series for the first time and automatically decides he IS the main character. Just like me fr. Not rating it higher bc I know we can do better with this style.

#3 - Dixon Hill Data pt 1

8.5/10

OUGH. That is an OUTFIT. The tie. The Hat. The HANDKERCHIEF. They sure didn’t half-ass the costumes on this one, they really gave him the full aesthetic and I am HERE FOR IT.

#4 - Lore Outfit Switcheroo

Basic, TNG, “we found somebody on a planet and we dressed them in the nearest garment we could find, which happens to look like the world’s blandest sweater.” I would have rated it lower if it weren’t for the fact that they layered a v neck and a turtleneck and made him look particularly whoreish.

Kindred spirits.

You should watch this interview. It’s the first time I see the complete interview, I have only seen parts of it, bits translated here and there. I’m so glad MileApo safe place translated it, it was so worth it. It’s such a good interview with a good flow and the women are funny, teasing and yet professional and they succeed in making them relax. The fans calling were also cute, the one at work was so lovely. Apo as usual was bubbly and adorable, as for Mile, he was in C&C mode in this instance cool and cute. One of the moments which stayed with me is when one of the fans said: ‘I like when P’Mile gives interviews, he’ll always look at P’Apo, all the time. I think it’s so warm and very cute.’  (27:19).

And of course, the host had to ask, why Mile looks at Apo in that cute and warm way? And his answer was one of the reasons which made me pay attention to their relationship and bond when I saw it. He said, ‘I always listen (to him) carefully, and, of course, he looks like Zhan Zhao’. And Mile added telling Apo, ‘Your face is sharp, I like it.’ And they forgot for a couple of seconds there was an audience, hosts and another guy I think with them. The hosts are so right when they said, ‘When Apo talks, he really holds the attention of the listeners, he’s charming when he tells a story’. I agree, the world agrees and Mile too.

What I get from Mile is that the man is an aesthete someone who understands and enjoys beauty. And Apo possesses the kind of beauty which will please this side of him. That’s why he told him when they met again that he was still handsome, he hadn't forgotten how Apo looked. But beauty isn’t enough to entrance Mile, beauty without depth is nothing to him, he would lose interest so quickly. And in Apo he has found that depth. When Apo talks Mile listens, because Apo isn’t just a beautiful face but a beautiful soul. See how attentive Mile became when near the end, Apo intended to mention something he had never said before. Mile doesn’t only watch him but he is curious and interested in the way Apo beautiful mind works. Mile wasn’t embarrassed to answer, the one shy was Apo. Mile responded truthfully and it was spontaneous. Why? Because Mile is a lover, and I’m not saying it in any sexual or romantic way. Mile loves loving, animals, guitars, food, acting, business, people and he LOVES what he loves and he’s not afraid to say it, to voice it. What he loves, he doesn’t love halfway, he loves madly, passionately, strongly. And what and whom he loves, he will take care of, protect, and treasure. And it’s very clear Mile loves Apo, very much.

Apo is a great story teller. ‘When Apo talks, he really holds the attention of the listeners, he’s charming when he tells a story’. I would say Apo holds the attention of listeners, he’s charming when he tells a story about what he’s passionate about or whom he loves. He could talk for hours about acting, the process, his life experience, love, etc. Earlier when Apo was talking about Mile’s cuteness, you have to pay attention to the way he recounted this story about Mile and the cake, the warmth in his voice. All the details tell us how much he enjoys observing Mile and discovering more about him. He appreciates Mile’s gentleness, kindness and cuteness. Apo is a spiritual person and he has met a co-star who isn’t hungry for fame, popularity, games, but one who believes in his art and in the power of good. And it’s very clear Apo loves Mile very much.

I believe they were the first shocked at how similar they are, in their way of thinking, behaving, etc. They are kindred spirits. Here we have two young men who are just enjoying the fact that they were lucky enough to find a great partner, on and out of the screen. Someone they can trust and can relate to the ups and downs of their life in the entertainment industry. The higher you go, the colder and lonelier it gets. The warmth of the spotlights doesn’t last. How comforting it is to know there is someone you can call when you’re tired, you have doubts about it all. They love each other, in what way? Who cares when it is so beautiful.

Overanalyzing Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak

Continuing with my very long posts overanalyzing my favourite movies, yesterday I saw del Toro's 2015 Crimson Peak for like the 50th time. Being one of my favourite movies i always talk about how i could make an essay just based on the link between the power of the characters and their hair, and i though 'Welp, Tumblr exists, might as well!' so here it is. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

For those of you who don't know, Crimson Peak is the name of a movie from 2015 directed and written (i think) by Guillermo del Toro. It's NOT a horror movie, as many people think, but a gothic romance type of movie, with a lot of ambiance and spirits that are more metaphorical than scary. The movie was not very well received because people thought it would be a horror movie due to the trailers focusing too much on the horror aspect of the ghosts, but i find it to be one of the best movies made in the gothic genre. As a gothic writer myself, it really is one of the best examples of the genre there is!

Now, the movie has a lot of gorgeous aesthetic choices that carry a heavy symbolism. Set in the 1890s to the 1900s, the victorian aesthetic of the turn of the century helps the movie have more modern aditions like typewriters and gramophones, which almost helps the story feel more modern since most gothic stories take place in the middle of the nineteenth century, and they feel further and more distant to readers. Many of the choices in clothing also help with one of the biggest symbolisms in it: the moth vs the butterfly. Edith, our protagonist, wears appropriate clothing for the period with big puffy sleeves and golden colours that help us see her as a beautiful butterfly, while Lucille wears clothes from a decade earlier, which help with showing the brothers are struggling with money, but also stucks her in a 1970s dress that almost looks like a pupa, where a dangerous black moth is going to come out of. Lucille is placed as the black moth, dangerous for the butterfly and opressive to herself and others. The costuming in the movie is great, but i want to talk about the colors the movie uses and how they relate to power.

In Edith's home, the main colours used are golds and browns, which help us see she feels powerful and good in her hometown, as shown also by her golden hair. Lucille and Thomas inmediatly look out of place, dressed mostly in black and cool greys, with the exception being Lucille's red dress she wears when she's first introduced, showing us she's dangerous, a walking red flag. Her hair, of course, is a deep raven black. Lucille and Edith both have a power struggle, in this case because of the love the each feel for Thomas, and the only thing that doesn't change in them is their hair colour, since in the climax and fighting scene both of them wear their hair loose while dressed in white, showing their power struggle. Something happens in Allerdale Hall as well: Edith's clothes become darker and less saturated, and her hair becomes loose. Her hair, her power, is becoming less and less as Lucille, still dressed in black for most of this part of the film, has gained power being in her isolated mansion.

While in Edith's town, at the park, Lucille cuts of a butterfly's chrysallis from a tree branch before the butterfly comes out, as she sits on a floor covered in dead butterflies in golden colours. And this is one of my favourite parallels of the movie. In the last moments of the film, before her fight with Edith, while Edith signs her lawyer's documents focibly, Lucille cuts of a lock of her hair. In the victorian era, cutting your hair wasn't very common amongst the higher classes, only being done to people who had passed away as a means of remembering by creating jewels out of their hair. The act of cutting of one of Edith's golden locks is basically Lucille telling her 'I won, you have no power, this is your end, your death', similar to how she cuts of the butterfly from the tree, yet again showing Lucille as a black moth that eats the golden butterfly. But Edith still has her power, with her golden hair long and cascading down her shoulders, and she uses said power to escape and, in the end, manages to kill the black month, turning Lucille into a black vengeful spirit.

This movie is one of the best i've seen in a while and you can see how obssessed i am with it lol. Just like the hair, the costuming and settings of the film as well as things like lighting and use of colour are charged with heavy symbolisms and meanings that you can look into if you're obssessed with it like i am. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it and you like ghostly romances in creepy haunted mansions.

Milgram murder swap aus! I tried to keep the personalities the same and just swap the murder itself – not everyone paired perfectly but some worked really well

Fuuta/Mu: Muu has an extensive social media presence because of her wealthy lifestyle. She runs several blogs and channels (instead of fantasy rpg she has a fairy tale-esque theme to all her profiles). She gains a dedicated following who hang on her every post. When she calls out someone online, it doesn’t take long for her followers to join in and fatal consequences to follow. Fuuta’s reputation as the tough and cool gamer places him between being a menace on his university campus to being the subject of bullying himself. When his gaming buddies all turn on him, and he quickly falls from the center of attention. He’s a violent victim, but a victim nonetheless. One betrayal hurts more than the others. Armed with something sharp from one of the campus labs, he takes matters into his own hands.

Shidou/Mahiru: Mahiru is a bubbly doctor who all patients and families trust wholeheartedly because of her cheery attitude. When her partner falls ill, though, she’s impatient. It takes less than two weeks for her to realize she needs to grab hold of her lover before she loses them, and she uses her reputation to avoid suspicion of her increasing body count. (I know we don’t know a ton about Mahiru’s crime yet, but) Shidou moves to the city taking up a new job at the florist’s. When he meets someone he really falls for, he’s calm and calculated about approaching them and planning meetings. He’s good at keeping a poker face through lies, and he easily convinces them that every meeting is “such a strange coincidence” and “must be fate.” 

Amane/Haruka: Amane’s parents were abusive, and she looked to religion to find solace. She only had access to minimal forms of religious information, though, so her view of the whole thing is heavily distorted. She wanted nothing more than her parents’ attention, and sought out the attention of a higher power to satisfy that. She killed animals as sacrifices, and thought she was being guided by righteousness when she killed her sibling/family member.. Haruka was raised in a cult who focused more on teachings and punishments than on his needs. He was so hungry for their approval, he began following their every word and genuinely accepting their teachings to get a feeling of belonging. Even when pushed to murder/allow for someone’s death, he did it happily thinking they’d be proud of him for doing the right thing. 

Yuno/Kotoko: Yuno knows how to manipulate the social situation – she’s bubbly and fun, she knows how to please people, but at her core she’s calculating and disinterested in drama. She uses these abilities to talk to others and track down the criminal she’s looking for who hurt young girls that she knew/related to. Kotoko goes out and does whatever she pleases. She’s not looking to find true love or please a man, she’s just doing what’s good for her while maintaining her bold and self-assured attitude. She sees nothing wrong with her actions and has a “screw you if you do” outlook. 

Mikoto was tough to swap with someone else, but I gave him Aname’s crime because I think it’d have the most interesting tension: Mikoto was raised in a strict religious cult, but only one of his alters took to the teachings. One is very devout, and is willing to commit murder the way the other members would have encouraged. The other desperately wants to escape the cult, and fights back against it whenever he can. They both think their actions are protecting the other. Fun angel/demon aesthetics (where the “angelic” religious one is the murderer and the “demonic” antireligious one is innocent).

And so that Kazui isn’t left alone, a modified Kazui/Haruka swap: Kazui was very emotionally repressed since childhood. Even into adulthood his family makes it clear they’re disappointed in him. He carries his abuse with him far later in life, letting it simmer and grow under the surface. Maybe his wife started talking about having kids, reminding Kazui of his own childhood, or maybe something unrelated caused all the memories to flood back. When all that pent up pain finally breaks through, it floods and his wife suffers. Haruka grew up in a stable family, but still envied others. He was so busy with other friends/siblings that he preferred to be with, he ignored his younger sister’s needs. Disliking her and wishing to escape his responsibility to her, his lies/avoidance of her put her in fatal danger.

Uuuhhhh Es is the mysterious prison leader and Jackalope is running batshit interrogations and making all the decisions 😂

Ranking Aikatsu Friends stage designs

1. Coincidence, Inevitable.

One of the coolest and most unique stages. I’m not sure whether it fits the song, but it’s just so pretty and cool.

2. Have a Dream

Very whimsigoth!

3. To the New Stage

It’s just so magical looking. I don’t think it’s necessarily the best, but I really like it.

4. Overflowing with Love

The crystalline water, flowing waterfalls and floating islands give it a unique and slightly surreal look that fits well with the song’s frutiger aero sound. The pink lace and gold filigree don’t really fit with the music, but they’re very pretty and they help Classical Ange establish its aesthetic.

5. The World is Spinning

The black and neon palette is actually really rare for Aikatsu stages. I don’t know, this stage is just really cool.

6. A nice “to meet you”!

The stage base has the typical AiFriends problem of looking too plain and flat, but the way everything was done was really special and engaging. The way the sky changes throughout the song, when the twinkling lights turn on and the ghosts appear, and, especially, the way Mirai interacted with the stage before the song began... very cunique!

7. As It Is

I really like the stained glass windows and the big, mysterious doors (which are also symbolic of Alicia “opening a door” in her journey). It was also cool seeing the ice cave, because her performance happened a few months after I had been inside an ice cave myself.

8. Guided

AiFriends’ CGI style makes backgrounds look a little odd and flat, although that might work just fine with this particular song and character, since it’s a fairytale-themed song and the character is an actor, so it gives off the impression of a cutout from a book, or a stage set.

9. Be star

It’s very unique and ethereal. I couldn’t tell you what a single thing on this stage is – there are no words for it – but it’s really pretty!

10. Believe it / Pride

This one probably would’ve ranked higher if it, and its variations, were not so overused. I think this is probably the best version of the stage, so I’ll just let this one take _ place and save all the other stages for the afterword/footnotes section. The warm, girly and elegant appearance of this stage isn’t really suited to LMT’s more cool style of music that often borders on being in a minor key, but the red and gold does match their hair.

11. The Scene Above 6cm

A bright and busy design resembling the parts of the city I do my best to avoid! It was really good of them to locate the cafe so that the performer is next to it while singing the line about a cafe.

12. We wish you a merry Christmas BEST FRIENDS! Ver.

I think I like this one best out of all the stages for this song. It doesn’t really embody “modern version of Christmas song that features a rap break”, but it’s very cute and nostalgic.

13. Identity

The main thing that makes this stage amazing is the effects, not the design itself, so I can’t rank it too high. But the shadow acrobats and animals? Really cool and unique!

14. Girls be ambitious!

You can’t really see the stage well for most of the performance due to the lighting, and it usually doesn’t look quite as cool as it does in this image, so I had to rank it a bit low.

15. Strong, Kind, Beautiful

It is really pretty, but it uses so many recycled elements from Karen’s first stage that I can’t rate it too high. Like, it’s basically just a dance version of the same stage (like when they changed the stage for Dreaming bird into a live one).

16. Let's A · I · K · A · T · S · U Together! (Coco Ver.)

This design is really different for Aikatsu Friends, so it’s a shame it didn’t appear in the anime. It’s a lot less physical-looking than the other stages - it’s all blatantly digital. Unfortunately, it looks coolest from this top angle that’s in the picture above but never appeared in the music video.

17. Let's A · I · K · A · T · S · U Together! (Pure Palette Ver.)

It’s cute and charming, but it didn’t wow me the way some of the other stages did.

18. I’m Not Alone!

For a final stage, it’s just... meh. I do love when they have cameos of coords incorporated into the stages (like in Pretty Pretty)

19. Okemaru

Despite the busy appearance, I can’t help but feel like something is missing. The bright colours are very cheerful, but I personally find the flat mowed grass to just be depressing.

20. Aikatsu Friends!

It’s alright. There’s a good attempt to balance cute and cool elements.

21. Thank You⇄It'll Be Alright

The usage of neon for the background is quite rare for a cute-type song. The neon instruments resembling an orchestra are nice, as is the piano surrounding the stage, but it still feels a bit plain or empty. (Also, the sheet music is just a bunch of illegible nonsense, and I believe the piano is not playing the actual song. Well, asking for that might be asking too much. It’s a cool idea regardless of accuracy.)

22. This World is Wonderful

Cute, but nothing special. Just like everything else about Wakaba. I do like the pop-up book effect that was used for the houses, though.

23. Open You Heart

It’s just nothing new. It’s very similar to other stages from previous series (e.g. the Girly Room Stage used for SHINING LINE*).

VARIATIONS OF THE FRIENDS STAGE

(No.1 is the LMT version that I ranked earlier)

2. Bond ~Synchro Harmony~

Whereas Love Me Tear’s version of this stage looked warm and regal, Reflect Moon’s looks cold and mystical. The almost-entirely-blue palette draws attention to the contrasting orange flames from the chandeliers.

3. You × I / Let's Find It♪

Technically there is a slight variation between the two stages for these songs, but whatever. Of all the Friends units, the royal palace theme suits Honey Cat least, but they still made it their own.

4. Everyone Everyone!

The more blue-silver toned walls work alright with the pink stage.

5. The Thing That’s Only There

The bright pink and blue just doesn’t fit with the red and gold. The change from silver to gold does help demonstrate that Pure Palette is, like, a higher level and more serious now, so it does make sense in the context of the show.

Hmmmmm okay, I will give this my best shot

One thing I like about it that I know you also enjoy in a series is that it feels like there are a lot of threads to pull at as a fan. Some of this is because they laid very good groundwork for certain reveals -- it's absolutely a show that feels different on a rewatch because of worldbuilding and character details that come into play later -- but some of it is also because it is an all-ages show on the Disney channel that the creator originally wanted to pitch as a darker, more horror-focused adult series, and it shows, and it's very possible to reach inside those inner working and pull something interesting out. Like, the aesthetics of the show are explicitly inspired by Hieronymus Bosch paintings (there are in fact multiple characters named after him), from what I understand the original pitch involved literal, actual Hell and had to be softened to "the Demon Realm," the primary villain is a huge dig at Christian extremism even though they can't quite say it out loud...... in some ways the fact that they had to dial down certain elements has made it extra fascinating to be a fan of, because it feels like getting handed the baton to go wild with the things the creators couldn't quite take all the way given network restrictions but are still in the DNA of the show.

--Also it is really, really funny to see them try to write a villain who is a Puritan whose motivation is a result of being a Puritan without being allowed to outright say anything too negative about Christianity.

The other thing is that one reason all that shows is because they still crammed a lot of it into the show anyways. The primary antagonist's evil plan is... genocide. There's a whole horrific subplot about one of the main characters turning out to be the latest in a line of murdered clones and at one point you see a fucked-up clone graveyard full of the skeletons of dozens of other dead clones. The main setting is the dead, mostly-rotted body of a giant god-like being that has since turned into a chain of islands. So for people interested in the darker and more mature side of the storyline, there's plenty to work with.

And all of that is a backdrop to a very solid cast of characters and character relationships, because you know, an interesting setting and premise alone does not a compelling piece of media make. It takes a little while for some of the darker and more complex elements of the plot to emerge but by the time it does you have reasons to care about it, which is of course the kind of thing that makes higher stakes really work. It's genuinely a very funny series and I think the sense of humor would gel with you, and I like that it actually explores the impact certain things would actually have on the characters -- not the least of which is that it handles its portal fantasy premise in a way that feels like a direct answer for everyone who was very dissatisfied with the Chronicles of Narnia, with a protagonist who is constantly struggling with the whole "Well, I ran off to a cool fantasy world and have developed close and loving relationships there and really grown as a person, but I do have another life I don't think I can run away from forever" question. (And I really like how they've been handling it!)

--And okay, I know that you, like me, are not one to be sold on rep and rep alone but it feels like a travesty not to at least mention that there is a (very cool, would have been one of my favorites regardless of gender) nonbinary character who is like, a real, grown adult even though a lot of the cast are teens, and it's just so refreshing to see a like, fairly major, late 40s nb character handled well and heavily involved in the main plot and the life of one of the main characters. (Although they don't show up until S2).

Obviously like any show it's not perfect, and it's especially frustrating that the plot and writing had to take some visible hits as a result of S3 getting mostly axed (turned into three double-length episodes instead of a full season; we hate to see network meddling), but I do think you'd enjoy parts of it a lot!

Also they poke fun at Harry Potter sometimes (due also being a series involving a magic school) in ways that are very satisfying, and I need more people at the intersection of the TOH and TLT fandoms to understand why me comparing the Emperors in both series is funny. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

kid-az I’d be surprised if anyone actually picked Damijana or Evengeline… As for me, I pick Mogdir, since magic is cool and I love nature. I’ll just make sure to keep out of the eastern portions given they do not take kindly to Commoners much. Sure… my safety IS guaranteed, but that doesn’t mean the people HAVE to be nice to me.

Yeah, they're certainly not my top picks, that's for sure...

I think these kingdoms do have their own appeal though. Damijana has the tallest buildings on Looming Gaia and really remarkable architecture overall. As long as you stay out of the Shadow and Gutter sectors, the streets are pristine, crime is very low, there are tons of shopping centers and entertainment options to explore (That entertainment is stuffed with propaganda, but still...)

If you're into outdoorsy activities, Damijana is the worst place you can go. Between the acid rain, barren soil, and smoggy sky, there's not much to see and do out there. But if you like malls, movies, arcades, museums, and concerts, Damijana has the most options crammed into the smallest amount of space.

Evangeline is basically the opposite. It has some bigger metro areas where you can find stage plays, primitive arcades, museums, and things like that. But this kingdom's best feature is undoubtedly its geography. Enjoy vast, sprawling fields, hectares of virgin forests, unpolluted soil and fresh skies, where the nymphs are always friendly because they know they're protected by both the Nymph Pact and Lindist doctrine.

There are few places on Looming Gaia that are better suited for hiking, camping, fishing, gardening, boating, horseback riding, or hunting. The best places in this kingdom are in the rural outskirts, away from the people...most of which suck. Not gonna lie.

Mogdir is one of the top choices for a vacation destination, in my opinion! But like you said, tourists would want to stay out of the eastern half. Whether their safety was guaranteed or not, they're going to get hooted at and verbally harassed a lot. Not to mention the eastside is rather poor, civil services are lacking, and I'd say it's overall a swampy, soggy, hillbilly hellhole...

Meanwhile the westside sits at a higher elevation near the mountains, and this region is shaded by a thick canopy of humungous, magical trees that shield it from the rain quite a bit. Sure, you won't see the sun much, but the forest is naturally lit by bioluminescent plants, giving it a starry, magical aesthetic.

Personally, I would never pass up a chance to hang out in a place like that! I'm going on vacay with you! ;)

Skylanders Review: Double Trouble

So um Yeah, we've covered 1/4 of the original thirty-two Skylanders, now we gotta' talk about Double Trouble.

[Image: Double Trouble is a um, "Shaman" character. His face is actually a tiki mask, with a rectangular shape that extends his forehead to a higher position. His mask has canine-like teeth surrounded by a rectangular, carved in lips, alongside a carved unibrow. There are also five additional quadrilateral markings above his unibrow that almost resemble SpongeBob's eyelashes. You can see his lime green eyes through the mask. There are several feathers decorating the sides of the mask, alongside a grass-skirt with a leather...fanny pack maybe? Its latch is tied around a cartoonish bone, and you cannot see any legs under his skirt so that's a cool detail I guess. Anything not covered up by his "traditional" garments reveals that he has blue skin, with humanoid features. He wields a staff topped with a crystal, with metallic fixtures surrounding it, and with more feathers decorating it.]

So um, remember the Witch Doctor and Shaman monsters from the OG Scooby-Doo series? Kids franchises really loved those wooden masks!

Okay these masks are really cool, and they are a great representation of cultures - especially with how humans all have the same idea of using artificial faces to intimidate others or put on performances.

But like, this is...not good right? I can't really say the devs who designed this guy deserve a 1000 years of misfortune for not being all that culturally sensitive, but look at him.

Better yet, look at the fact that most of his in-game dialogue is just different iterations of Ooga Booga. No seriously.

I am not comfortable with this, like his species is apparently "Tiki Man"??? I feel like if you want something Tiki inspired that has no connection to the culture actually connected to that imagery, you could at least make up a new name for it? Video Games are a half-visual media, so the connection would be easy to make through design alone. Here it feels kinda lazy just to call something "Tiki [Blank]", like calling the stars and stripes a "Flag pattern" in a world where America doesn't even exist.

The Tiki stuff is just aesthetics by the way, there is no other cultural influence because it's very clear he's mostly based on African Shaman stereotypes.

His backstory is basically the same as the Zebra from My Little Pony, and his name comes from the fact that he ate a special plant that gave him the ability to create clones with his already expert magic. The first positive I can give this character is that I enjoy him getting along with his clones despite the fact that they're all tiny bombs mechanically.

It gets even weirder because one of his beta figure designs is just a normal elf-eared wizard with no Tiki elements. Perhaps it was deemed too similar to Eon, but with a few redesigns it could've worked. Even taking Chompy Wizard into account.

Motto: "Boom Shock-a-locka!" I did not like writing this review. 1/5.

One. He gets one. The Bone Chompy of Death.

Did I mention that I will not do a full creature design review of the original Scooby-Doo! Where are You roster of monsters for reasons this review makes apparent.
