Of all the places Jack thought he'd find himself today, a dive bar in the middle of butt fuck nowhere watching a cage fight wasn't even on his list. Silly, really, considering all the strange places his Statesman missions took him. All around him, large drunken men in plaid shirts jeered and shouted at the two half naked men in the cage. The entire bar stank of stale beer and sweat, which made Jack long for the heady woody smells of the Statesman barrel room, but he couldn't argue with the view.
In the cage, a massive slapdash metal structure that dominated the center of the rundown establishment, were two young men. Neither could have been older than twenty-five, both striped to the waist in just their jeans, and both covered in blood and sweat. It was the most homoerotic shit Jack had ever seen in such a painfully hetero bar. He had to stifle a laugh whenever he thought about it.
Taking another sip of his shitty beer, Jack glanced over to his mark, only to find him in the exact same spot since the last time he checked. Fast asleep in a corner booth, drooling into his thick, bushy beard. Another quick look around the bar confirmed that no one else was paying either of them any attention; except for one man.
Sat at a table, set off to the corner with a view of Jack, his mark and the cage, was a broody looking motherfucker. Sporting a well-worn leather jacket, a mustache similar to his own and a casual air that oozed practiced confidence, the other man had definitely made him. Everything about this guy said agent, the only question was what kind.
Jack's money was on CIA considering the dealings his sleepy mark was into, but FBI was also a possibility. There was only one way to find out, and considering Jack didn't feel like competing with another agent for the mark, working together was the better option for them both. Eying the other man, Jack could see he was also nursing what passed for beer in this shithole. There was his opening.
Sliding off his barstool, Jack glanced over at the two young men now slumping against each other, gasping for breath, the sweat rolling off them. Swaggering over to the stranger's table, Jack was met with a single raised eyebrow and a tilt of the head.
"Evenin'." Jack tipped his hat, before leaning down slightly closer to the other man. "Enjoyin' the entertainment?"
"Not my usual kind of thing." The other man smirked and Jack could just pick out the hints of a Texan accent. "But when in Rome or whatever."
"I agree." Jack gave a chuckle. "Almost makes up for the terrible beer. Do you mind if I join you?" Jack gestured to the free chair next to the stranger.
The other man didn't respond beyond a small nod, but his eyes watched Jack intently as he slid into the seat. 
“I don’t know about you,” Jack leaned in conspiratorially, “but I usually prefer somethin’ a little stronger. Now, I’m a whiskey man myself. How about you?”
“I’m a cut the bullshit kinda man.” The stranger sat up a little straighter, locking eyes with Jack with a steadiness that could only come from years of experience in the field. “So, why don’t you do us both a favor and tell me who you are and what you want.”
“To the point, I respect that.” Jack nodded. “All right. I’m Agent Jack Daniels, and I’m here keepin’ an eye on that fella over there. Reckon you know who I mean, seein’ as you’ve also got eyes on him. I need him alive as part of an investigation, and I get the feelin’ you do too.”
“You CIA?”
“No.” Jack carefully pulled his fake DIA badge from his jacket, flashing it under the table at the stranger. “You?”
“DEA.” The stranger mimicked Jack, carefully and covertly showing his badge. “Javier Peña. Our guy has links to a new player in the narcotics trade.”
“Indeed he does.” Jack nodded again, glancing around to make sure no one was watching or listening to them. “Amongst other things. Peña, huh? Weren’t you part of the team that took down Escobar?”
Javier shifted in his seat. “That was a long time ago. So what do you want to do? I’m here tonight to see who he meets up with.”
“He ain’t meetin’ up with anyone tonight. He was meant to, but I’ve already made sure that ain’t happenin’.” Jack leaned back in his chair, his eyes drifting over to the cage fighters who were rolling around on the floor trading punches. “The dumb fuck’ll stay here, so I was gonna wait until the mornin’ and tail him back to wherever he’s holed up. You’re welcome to join me.”
Jack watched as Javier’s sharp eyes assessed him thoroughly. Jack could feel those dark eyes taking in every detail of him and knew that on some level Javier wasn’t buying his story. But was it enough for him to leave?
“Fine.” Javier scowled, taking a swig of beer, pulling a face at the taste. “I guess we just wait then.”
“At least there’s a show.” Jack gestured to the cage, scooting his chair back slightly so he was parallel to Javier at the table. “Who’s your money on? The fuckin’ twink blond or the other one?”
“At least that one can grow facial hair.” Javier let out a harsh laugh as he watched the two fighters. 
The crowd was getting impatient now, roaring and booing for the two young men to hurry up and finish. The blond responded by lunging at the darker haired man, who stepped back to avoid the attack. Grabbing hold of each other by the jeans, the two men fell to the floor of the cage again, tussling back and forth, much to the pleasure of the crowd. 
A loud whoop came from one section of the gathered men and as Jack craned his neck to look he could see that the blond had managed to pull down the other man’s jeans, exposing his ass. As the fighters rolled, grabbed and tugged at each other, the jeans worked their way further down until the man’s cock and balls were free. By this point, he was pinned under the blond, who had straddled his back, causing the other man’s legs to kick wildly. “Good show, am I right?” Jack’s voice was a husky whisper as he leaned over to Javier.

"Ah, that dumb fuck'll still be asleep for a few hours yet." Jack waved a hand, but following as Javier started to make his way back round to the front door of the bar. "How about we wait till this place clears out some, then have round two in the men's room?"
Blowing out a puff of smoke, Javier stopped at the door, looking around thoughtfully. There were only a handful of patrons still in the bar now. As predicted, their mark was still sound asleep where they had left him. The fight was over, with the two young men now redressed and counting their winnings at a table in the corner. Leaning against the doorway, Javier turned back to Jack with a smirk.
"You wanna fuck me this time?"

Hi! I might be late to this, but i'd really like to contribute a little bit to a certain situation happening around the analog horror community:
ALEX KISTER's allegations: the copying fetish

This post refers to only that one aspect, since that's the one i can confidently talk about, and i'd like to spread awareness about the whole thing somehow.

How did this come to be?

On March 12, 2024, twitter user STIRRINGJUICE posted a google document, which consisted of mainly relationship problems and grooming allegations against Alex Kister, creator of The Mandela Catalogue, although there was another aspect of it which people were posting more and more about: Alex Kister made Mandela Catalogue around his fetish about impersonating people.
To be more clear, this meant that the creator got off to/felt aroused by the act or impersonating others and 'becoming' them.
However, this was mostly a misinterpretation from the community, since the only text on the og document i could find was this:

I think the first image is cropped, so i'll post the text: "Alex has a scent fetish and would specifically enjoy copying people’s poses because he wanted to pretend to be them. DB didn’t know at all."
We can point out two things about this:
- The only thing being called a fetish is the scent, only saying that he enjoys copying people's poses and pretend to be them.
- In the discord message, Alex only mentions that he would have loved taking pictures in those poses, which was only a vague example (A bad use and lack of evidence imo).
So far, this is the only text that addresses this at all, the rest are just: 60% accuser's shitty relationship, and 40% the grooming allegations.
Now, i'd like to imagine that users mixed scent fetish, with copying people, and got the "Copying fetish", like in these posts:

We can agree that this is a misinterpretation of the document, because of users assuming that, if Alex Kister has a copying fetish, then TMC must be a fantasy about it! (And i don't blame them, it's logical with the main themes being that demons copy people).
When i saw this, i immediately called bs, and this is the point of the post:
The Mandela Catalogue doesn't exhibit any trait of fetish work.
Why? Simple!
A very common thing in fetish work, are these two things.
Romanticize the fetish: especially for weird, and straight up illegal fetishes! They might downplay the severity, and play the scene as something normal, TMC never does this, it portrays the Alternates as terrifying because of their abilities to kill without even harming the victim physically, and their near-immortality.
In Made in Abyss, the weird scenes where the kids speak about sexual stuff is shown as a normal scene, like if it was something kids normally talk about.
Using the fetish as the main thing: this means focusing on the fetish itself and giving them too much screentime, to show them in a good light. The fetish specifically means copying another, and most of the alternates never quite copy other people perfectly, the most infamous ones are deformed, non-human appearing and most don't even copy a character we've already seen, and viceversa, we don't see much of the alternate version after we've know about the real person. (Caesar Torres and his alternate, Preacher, the scary hallway guy, and the archangel Gabriel and his Alternate, to name a few)
You might expect the fetish content focusing only on the act that involves the fetish, which leads me to my last point.
They never show an alternate actually changing into somebody else, morphing their features to look like the exact person, a fetish scene might be where the alternate is slowly morphing their features in front of the other person, to the exact same traits in front of them.
A few more points:
Mark Heathcliff, the character interpreted by Alex Kister himself, doesn't really have it's own Alternate, 'Caesar' only becoming him after Mark dies, and only like a frame, i feel like someone with that fetish would insert themselves more? I'm not sure how to explain.
If the story was about the fetish, i don't think the series would even have the biblical references.
To back up my previous point, the inspiration of Mandela Catalogue is about the creator's existential crisis with Christianity, Covid, Local58, and the Walten Files, cited by both Wikpedia and an interview.

this can change depending on my mood, but mostly (i hc that) bakugou just uses the blanket queer term. hes not closeted, just doesnt get why its a big deal; its not anybodys business what he is, what he does, or who hes with.

dekubaku, obviously! I could ramble on and on about it but basically i love how its a mutual obsession between both of them. they have this silent vow to each other, and its just breathtaking to watch and or read about. i honestly think no ship does it like they do.

oof. this is HARD. not because i cant pick one but litteraly because my memory is so fucking shitty, and i cant remember any. but any lines that comes out of his gremlin mouth is my favorite.
7. one way in which i relate to this character
that hes hard to love, really, but that despite everything you can learn to be better. and that you can be loved to, even at your worst. i find that aspect of his character really comforting. not that what he did wasnt wrong, but that he can improve and still be loved despite not 100% being there yet.
8. thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character
when his huaghty attitude in his early arcs kicked him in the ass so hard, i had to sheild my eyes away from it because my face got so red from cringing.
9. cinnamon roll or problematic fav?
tbh in fandom terms hed be a problematic fav becsuse not everybody likes him for one reason or another, but to me he is babygirl. and everybody else can fuck off if they want to think otherwise.

As your not a big fan of fantasy books in general. What drew you into loving asoiaf? What got you hooked?
now that I'm invested in asoiaf I do genuinely like the fantasy elements of the story, but the stuff that really pulled me in was the human drama and political intrigue etc. I love the character work, almost all of the POVs feel fully realised and subvert typical tropes in really interesting ways (imo). I like the inter-generational drama (the reasons I like succession are v similar to the reasons I like the Lannisters), like if I want to understand Jaime and Cersei and Tyrion I can look to Tywin, and if I want to understand Tywin I can look to Tytos, and if I was to understand Tytos I can look to Gerold, like it's a russian doll of intergenerational trauma what more could a girl want.
and on that note I really like the scope! GRRM obviously feels this need to account for all details minor and major, so that even with everything that's already on the page there's room to extrapolate so much more. i mean here I am writing who knows how many words about a fake 20-episode long robert's rebellion tv series lol like this all happened before the series even starts and yet I hardly need to make anything up bc there is so much to draw on just based on all the random little details we've got here and there from characters reflecting on the same events from different angles, and trying to piece together portraits of the people who died based on the recollections of those on the page who remember them..... it is so fun)
and yeah usually I prefer to read about that kind of thing on a smaller scale but the drama that plays out in AGOT is so engaging that upon initiation I didn't find it so much of a chore to keep track of all the various houses and lands etc in order to understand the full implications of each thing that happened - it felt like it was worth the effort. generally it's the 'keeping track' of it all that I find grating about fantasy bc I really want to just get on with the story rather than keep on top of a hundred magic systems and sub-species of pixie.
and obvs asoiaf is low fantasy rather than high fantasy, i.e. there aren't intricate systems to the magic and or complicated genus for each of the creatures, so that made it feel a lot more accessible for me as someone who just isn't very interested in those kinds of details. Dany's magic is made up as she goes along, it's never explained, and that's the same for pretty much all the fantastical elements - it's very show don't tell. and even though when you count it all up there are quite a lot of fantastical features and subplots, taken together with the rest of the story it's more like.... seasonings I wouldn't usually choose but ended up liking just fine in this overall dish lol
and finally asoiaf just really appealed to me from a fannish perspective! I really hate when you're trying to dig deeper with a work and you quickly start to realise that the writer(s) just weren't thinking that hard. it feels like striking concrete with a spade, like it's a one-sided conversation rather than something both the writer and the reader are participating in. I think some fans are perfectly fine with that and good for them - who cares if the author built the work to sustain your analysis if you're just having fun doing it - but for me it's a complete killjoy, I end up v frustrated and like the work isn't worth my time
so here's GRRM who is so fixated on the finer details that he's churned out a history book like 700 pages long and a bunch of short stories and also another history book just to add a bit more texture to the main story. and I don't have to worry about network input or co-writers or actors' intentions or whatever other external conflict or influence cos for better or worse it's all his story. and that just suits me better lol, it's one guy and his shitty computer, and me reading the shit he wrote with it. pure and simple living in the moment no phones in sight

While you were lost in your thoughts, you were startled by a hand touching your shoulder. When you turned around, you looked at him in surprise when you saw the boy smiling shyly at you. No, you weren't surprised that he was here, you were surprised by his bursting lip.
“Nakagoshi? What happened ?"
The young boy smiled and nodded, bowed slightly
“Sorry I'm late-“
“Don't be ridiculous,” you corrected your tone when you realized you sounded panicked. "What happened ? Did you fight?”
A stupid smile appeared on Nakagoshi's face. Why was he smiling? What was funny?
Actually there was nothing funny about it. But he loved that you worried about him.
“Just some shitty guys, no worries-“
He panicked when you raised one eyebrow and looked at him.
“Really, it doesn't even hurt. Should we go now?
You sighed and took a clean tissue out of your pocket and handed it to him.
“At least wipe your lip, it's still bleeding.”
You rolled your eyes as he nodded and took the tissue from your hand. You were angry that he was fighting even on the way here, but that was your life. Oya students can not stay away from the fight. You were like this too, but today you wanted to be away from all this.
You were the same age as Nakagoshi. You came to this school the same year as Nakaoka, and when you arrived, inter-factional conflicts were very famous.
While you suddenly found yourself next to Yasushi, Nakagoshi was one of the people you disliked the most. Until he saved your life last month.
You had had feelings for him for a short time, but the situation was different for him. He never wanted to be your enemy. On the contrary, he always wanted you to be by his side. But things didn't go as he expected.
Nakagoshi was a quiet person. But it was clear that he was confident in these matters. He probably didn't expect you to reject him when all the girls were chasing after him.
But it wasn't his looks or his strength that drew you to him. You loved his calm character. He was mature and thoughtful. He was also a sweet person.
While he was wiping the blood off his face, you unintentionally smiled with what was going through your mind. When Nakagoshi turned his head back to you, he looked at the small smile you had on your face and smiled.
“Your smile… It really suits you very well.”
He laughed when you looked at him in surprise.
“You know I like you y/n… Although I like your confident expression when you fight, smiling looks good on you.”
Your cheeks were usually red from running. But you were so embarrassed right now that you didn't even know what to say. Could a man really do this to you?
Nakagoshi slowly extended his hand.
“Can we go now?”
You looked at him. His smile was warm. You were sure his hands were warm too. You could see his smile grow as you took his hand.
Maybe enemies to lovers were real...

This is less about a western boyband and more about being teenagers trying to make it big, but it does give you some archetypes to play into, called Boarsornalities!. These include options such as Casanova, Wallflower, and Burnout. Your obstacles come in the form of police, family members, inter-band drama, and other bands. This game certainly lives up to its name - character creation looks sleek, requiring only a few dice rolls before you’re ready to go. The game is also divided into acts, so you’ll know exactly what you’re doing after each scene.
Limelight, by Session One Studios.
Limelight is a game where you play high school students who started a band. Can you balance your home, schoolwork, job and personal obligations and issues with life in a shitty band? Will you burn out, fade away or make it big-time? 
Another high school band ttrpg, this game is more down-to-earth. You don’t have any special powers, and you’re just regular high-school students; but you have to find a way to balance all of the responsibilities of a teenager while also pursuing your dream. There are ten character types to choose from, as well as pre-generated characters if you want to get to playing as fast as possible. This game is an ashcan, so don’t expect perfection - hopefully the designers have more coming out soon!
Fantasy Boy Band, by AuContraire.
You play as bards in an unnamed generic fantasy land. The job market has been difficult and it turns out that there is even not that many jobs for artists. And this is how your adventure starts - instead of falling into despair -  you and your friends from the Arts and Poetry Academy decided to form a boy band to finally achieve your well-deserved fame! You are the first ever boy band in those lands! Navigate through blood-sucking managers, the lacking equipment in villages lost in the middle of nowhere, people misunderstanding your art, fans in love and more!
This is a resource-management game that’s just one page. This game does have the different roles that you’re looking for - the shy one, the romantic one, and the bad boy, for example. You’ll deal with problems like the manager from hell, rival boy bands, and literal dragons. Your biggest obstacle is money: you need to be able to afford to get to your next gig with all of your stuff intact. If you want to play a stereotypical boy band but in a fantasy setting, this game is for you.

Hey Sweetheart, 
This is literally so fucking stupid, it's not like you’ll even read this, and I know your dramatic ass is both laughing at me in the afterlife and pissed I didn't let you have the last word. Isn't that just us, though?
I reread all of our letters over the years you were away and I know your first letter back to me was probably one of your petty, shitty little Fuck You’s because I stopped sending my letters. I say sending because I didn’t stop writing them. Jesus, Sweetheart, I was so fucking in love with you, even back then. I was fucking insane about you and I knew it the fucking moment you got out of my truck at the airport.
Do you know how close I was to chasing you down and telling you? Right then and there? Jesus fucking Christ, you probably would’ve stabbed me and I would’ve deserved it for dumping all that at your feet right before you had to leave for however long your old man told you to. So, I didn’t. 
But I watched you walk into that airport, and I waited to see if you would turn around, even once, just to look at me one more time. I told myself that if you looked back at me, then maybe you were in love with me, too, and I would fucking disregard your stupid, bitchy “don’t call, don’t text, don’t visit” garbage. But you didn’t. 
You just disappeared into the airport and I had to continue on with my life as if I didn’t just fucking let one of the brightest parts walk out of it.
God, Dom, in your stupid beautiful shitty letter you said you wouldn’t change this, and that’s real big of you I guess. I’m a selfish man, though, and if I could, I would fucking rewrite it all so we weren’t doing this. You in a fucking crematorium and me more than half a bottle of whiskey into a letter to my dead fucking soulmate a dead man. We’d have a goddamn happy ending that neither of us probably deserve because I don’t want to do this without you.
And ultimately, I would rewrite all of this so that I actually told you how you made me feel. I would rewrite things so I chased after you at the airport and told you I love you, even if you would’ve stabbed me for it. I would rewrite all of this so I told you I love you all those fucking months ago when we laughed together on the sidewalk outside your apartment and then you kissed me and dragged me back inside. Yeah, I remember that, too. It was an amazing night.
I don’t know how to end this, because if I do it’s over. I’ll finally have the last word and I don’t want it. I want you to fucking be here to scoff at me, to critique my writing, to call it cliche and boring and boorish and shit. I want this to be something I’m going to put in the mail for you to open it and read it and get your fucking smell all over it because you’re fucking alive. I have your fucking cologne but it smells all wrong because it’s missing YOU, and it makes me want to die every time I open that stupid bottle. But I do it anyway because it’s the closest I’ll ever get to kissing you again.
I need to finish this, so I’ll just bite the fucking bullet and do it. I can’t write this forever because we’re having your stupid interment in a couple days before Vinny, Kez, and the baby go away. i wanted to write more about her but I don’t think I have her character voice completely right yet. 🫠
and out of all the fics I read that focused on mai (it’s not a lot 😭) i think you wrote mai the most accurately.

I'll do my best anon, but fair warning ahead of time what you're going to get isn't exactly canon Mai, because Mai as a character has about three major scenes in canon, her introduction, her fight with Maki and then her death. I've done my best to flesh out Mai based on my interpretation of those three scenes. This is basically how I characterize her in my fics Werewolf and Inugami Family.
To understand Mai you have to understand Maki
As much as I enjoy Mai as her own character, the way Gege writes her within the story itself is basically as a tool to prop up Maki. Which means a lot of Mai's characterization is derived from how she relates to Maki, and also her relationship with Maki.
A lot of this is going to sound like, if Maki is X, then Mai is Y.
I think as a character Mai is designed to be everything that Maki is not. Nobara in fact makes that comparison between the two of them, that Mai is the shitty knock off version of Maki.
Maki looks at her situation in life, and doesn't mope or whine about it she earnestly works hard to improve it. In comparison, Mai not only pities herself a lot more than Maki does, she also blames the people around her (even her sister who she loves) rather than herself. Mai's the kind of person where if you were sitting there listening to them complain, you'd eventually get fed up hearing them and say "Well, aren't you going to do anything about it or are you just going to sit there?"
Mai's basically designed to be sort of unlikable, to make Maki look better. As an unintended side effect, she actually shows the symptoms of her traumatic upbringing in the Zen'in a lot clearer. Maki for someone who has apparently been violently abused her entire life, doesn't really lash out in anger that often, doesn't act up, and is for the most part just kind of introverted and a loner. Her worst quality is that she doesn't really respect or trust the people around her.
Mai on the other hand shows a lot of symptoms of what she endured. She's interalized the fact that she's weak and helpless and doesn't try to step beyond that. Mai is one of the complacent women of the Zen'in Clan like her mother. Naoya even says in his assessment of the twins that Mai may have a bad mouth but she ultimately knows her place. Mai acts oversexual and flirtatious when she's engaging women around her and seems to just get plain annoyed by men. Mai says the nastiest things imaginable, and she's totally willing to throw the same emotinoal abuse the clan constantly threw at Maki (you're weak, you're useless without a cursed technique) if she thinks it'll get attention from her sister. Mai's trauma is actually a problem which shows up in her everyday behavior. Nobara says trauma isn't an excuse to just do whatever you want, and like that's a quote from an unsympathetic source but I do think Mai has a tendency to play the victim.
Mai's also defined entirely by her cowardice. She just wants to run away and hide rather than face things. Part of the reason she wants her sister back is because her life would be easier if someone else was there to either protect her or suffer with her, even if that's not what's best for Maki. Mai's one backstory moment is her being so terrified of curses she wanted to close her eyes to everything and cling to her sister's hands rather than face it.
Mai's eternally running away from her problems, but if anything to me that makes her a far easier character to write than Maki. The best advice I can give about Mai is try to make her as unlikable as possible. She's whiney, mean, and rude. If you had her as a friend you'd probably get sick of her pretty quickly.
A big basis of my characterization for Mai is Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, if you want a show to watch for inspiration. Faith is the negative character foil for the hero Buffy. Because Faith is first an anti-hero, and then an anti-villain she's allowed to have a lot more negative traits to explore than Buffy is as the hero. Faith is not required to be likable, she doesn't have to appear moral and because of that there's a lot more flexibility with her character. So, Faith to Buffy is take the heroes flaws, and make them more ugly. Mai to Maki, is lets take Maki's flaws and make them more annoying. What if Mai had Maki's exact same trauma, but she was annoying about it and nobody respected her?
As a character there's a lot you can work with for her, because she has a lot of flaws to overcome. Not only that but her internal world is very complex, basically nothing that comes out of her mouth is the truth and she never tells anyone how she really feels. Which means you can show a lot of that complexity by demonstrating say, the difference between her words and her actions. Or say, the difference between how she really feels about someone like her sister, and the things she says because she's trying to cover up that vulnerability.
My last advice is Mai is kind of in a continual state of pain. It's not like she's not getting over her childhood abuse as an adult, she's literally still living in that abusive home with really no way out and no therapist to talk to or adult figure to rely on. If she's not strong enough like Maki to just overcome it, then everything she does is a sort of twisted attempt to cope with the pain, like someone who drinks just to get through the day. If your every day reality is to be stuck in a painful home where you're continually reeling from that pain and feeling like you're in danger, then it's going to be hard for you to think straightforwardly about things or even try to self improve like Maki does because your brain is in survival mode.

i totally agree with your post about ds9 execpt for the part about kira looking at it solely from in universe, its definitely not great. but nana has said that the plot was what allowed her to keep her job on the show, and i think thats incredibly important to keep in mind. again, the fact they had to do that is shitty, but she has said that the plot was what allowed her to continue doing ds9 without having to only be in shots that would not show her belly. and honestly i dont think the plot itself is too horrible either. its not great but its not as bad as it could have been. i do agree with a lot of your points though
In reference to this post.
I understand the sentiment behind this ask, and I'm aware of the reason why it was necessary to work around Nana Visitor's real life pregnancy. Kira's pregnancy plot on DS9, however, is not the only way this could've been achieved. One option, like you mentioned, would've simply been to pretend it wasn't happening, like in the case of Gates McFadden's pregnancy on TNG or Roxann Dawson's during most of season 4 of Voyager. I don't think that the production, however awful it was to the actors, would've risked losing one of the show's biggest roles over this.
I don't mind the idea of having Kira be pregnant on the show, on the contrary, but I take issue with how this was presented. Even beyond the fact that it boggles the mind that this at all happened through an emergency medical procedure between aliens (??), at no point either Kira or Keiko (and I'm very sorry for having left Keiko out of the equation in the original post, I shouldn't have) are allowed to have feelings about what happened to them, about the choice not-quite-choice they were given, the risks inherent for Kira in carrying a fetus (not even of her own species!!) to term, what it means to gestate for someone else. Nothing except acceptance of whatever may come, which can make sense on a character perspective but it sends a certain message just as much (ie pregnancy is a blessing so if it happens by accident you roll with the punches! unless when it is a curse, ie when you want it for yourself, see Jadzia).
Again, the trouble with the Kira pregnancy plot to me is that it represents the first in many similar narrative threads in which pregnancy is a plot device with dubious relations to choice, and where the protagonists of said plots have pretty much no space to grapple with what it means for them! Which is crazy because wouldn't be an inter-species gestational surrogacy be exactly the kind of absurd scifi scenario Trek loves so much in order to make a point, or even just have characters Have Emotions over the enormity of the question that the situation asks? But no, what Kira gets is one small scene where the only one who affirms her right to decide over her own body is Jadzia, and later on, after giving birth, confessing to Odo that she doesn't know how to express the feelings of loss she has re: Kirayoshi. Keiko gets exactly zero scenes. It's so so glaring, especially in a show that has dealt with people's ownership of their own bodies so often, especially with Odo! And upon reflection you can see this trend already in some of Jadzia's plots, where so often she is the object of someone else's choices (Verad's, Joran's and the Symbiosis Commission's, Curzon's) and her only agency is to bear the consequences on her own shoulders over and over, and she simply never speaks of it again. And well, then she dies just as she was making decisions about her future.
Of course the case of Sarah Sisko (and, on a lesser degree, Kasidy's pregnancy later in s7) the lack of choice or voice is SO MUCH WORSE. We never even meet her. We never hear Sarah's opinion unmediated by the Prophets. We just hear this horrifying story about lack of anything resembling consent surrounding Benjamin's birth and we simply have to move on. It's perhaps the final culmination of DS9 resorting to using women (glaringly, women of color—see Keiko above) as devices upon which the plot can be enacted, or men can have feelings about, once the show starts running a bit on fumes in the rush to complete the final seasons. Those fumes are revealing, imho, of underlying assumptions.
I suppose it looks especially evident in Kira's case because in other situations she is allowed to have feelings about what happens to her. But then again, Season 5 doesn't even let her mourn her dead friends, so. Don't get me wrong, I love Kira and I still think her existence in 90s television is nothing short of extraordinary; there are many places, though, where DS9 fails her (and the rest of the female cast) pretty badly, and the pregnancy plot is one of them.

do you have any recs for books about or surrounding trauma?
Mm. Not exactly? I mostly read fictional books that have abuse and trauma as, like, themes, but which aren't necessarily only about those things. i guess i can rec you some of those if that's what you're interested in.
but if you want like, nonfiction stuff, then there is this google drive that a guy gave me and it's full of csa/sa/childhood trauma/trauma healing books, articles, and workbooks. some pdfs and some epubs i think.
anyway i went back through my library log and here's some of the books i've read in which abuse is a main focus, but be warned that these stories aren't all 100% about abuse 100% of the time. anyway, under the cut.
the people in the trees (still reading)(about pedophilia and the abuse of a native population by the narrator)
the child finder (also still reading)(about a detective with a mysterious child abuse past who specializes in finding missing kids)
being lolita (a woman recounting how she was groomed by her english teacher and his weird reading of lolita)

juniper & thorn (a girl & her sisters kept in near isolation by her father. theres some SA, CSA, and incest, but it's also about a magic murder mystery and a hot dancer. the narrator has a weird blood kink its cool)

A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 105 - Deep Cover In An Alternate Dimension
Star Trek: Discovery - Season 1 Episode 10 - Despite Yourself

I return from my brief day of rest, for the continuation of Star Trek Discovery.
Picking up from where we left off, with the bridge trying to figure out where we are. They are at the right co-ordinates, but nothing else is where it should be. We run across a Vulcan cruiser, who respond to Discovery's hails by immediately opening fire.
According to another Federation ship, the Cooper, these Vulcans are rebels, and after a bit of good old technobabble, our crew comes to the conclusion that we're in a parallel universe, and the ready room discussion last episode set up.
I'm interested to see exactly how this universe differs from the main, I have a lot of questions, not least of which is why is starfleet fighting against Vulcan Rebels?
Well, after the intro, it's up for our crew to get a lay of the land, as Paul is still very much out of commission with whatever he has going on at the moment. I'm liking the writing going on between Lorca and Dr Culber, and the clash between Lorca's more cold objective outlook and Culber's relationship with Paul.
Discovery sends out Ash to survey the wreckage field to get information about this universe, but her starts having flashbacks behind the wheel. While these ships are klingon, there are also Vulcans and Andorians inside among the dead, and it's not just a stolen ship either, the data chips in the ship are Vulcan components.
Ash returns to Discovery, and tires to convince the Torturer to explain what happened to him, but she activates his sleeper agent programming. He manages to snap out of it however, and puts her back in her cell.
I love how the episode slowly builds the pieces on this new universe, and how I'm left to put the pieces together with the crew, and every new piece of information has me eager to see how it all fits in place, until around halfway through when Michael and Tilly manage to crack into the data from the Klingon-Vulcan ship
Apparently, the Federation doesn't exist here, and in it's place is human centric government called the Terran Empire. The dead Klingons, Vulcans and Andorians we encountered form an inter-species rebellion against this Empire. Additionally, Saru concludes that this Universe's discovery has made it's way into the main universe, and apparently Sylvia is it's captain.
The Cooper tries to hail discovery, so Sylvia has to push through her anxieties to pretend to be a Fascistic captain, and the scene is hilarious. Sylvia is just literally me, she is precious and I love her. Also I'm Scottish, so hearing Lorca jump to a Scottish Accent when told to conceal his voice just filled me with glee!
Lorca decides to prepare to train Discovery and her crew to blend in with this new Universe, so they can survive until they find a way home. Federation badges and uniforms are switched out for Empire ones, and everyone . I'm actually really interested to see where this plotline goes. Deep cover mission like this absolutely effect people, and I'm really excited to see our crew's morality put to the test in a universe that just doesn't have the same moral compass and values are our crew.
I'm also really curious to know more about this Terran Empire universe. The whole Evil-Parallel universe is a really common thing when stories go the multiverse route, and rightfully so, there are a lot of ways you can the concept of an evil parallel universe. Doctor Who, my main Sci-Fi fandom, did it in a 1970 Third Doctor Serial called Inferno, which is a really interesting study of Nature vs Nurture, and my favourite part of Inferno is that the Inferno-Earth characters are deep down the same people as their original N-Space counterparts, just buried deep under and twisted by shitty fascist upbringings. I'm really curious to see where Star Trek's take on the evil-parallel universe falls on a similar nature vs nurture spectrum.
Apparently, Michael's counterpart is dead, and Lorca's counterpart murdered her. Apparently, Lorca's counterpart also led a coup against the Emperor, which really caught my attention. I really want to know more about Lorca's counterpart. Was he leading a coup for his own gain in a similar way to how Sylvia's counterpart gained the captaincy after murdering the previous captain, or was he genuinely trying to overthrow this facist empire? I want to know more! Point is, Lorca's Counterpart is still out there in this universe, as he's a fugitive and wouldn't be on the other-Discovery, which if the principle of Chekov's Gun applies, mean we're probably gonna run into him, and I'm excited for that!
Also, one more thing, while searching through the data core, Lorca finds that Discovery isn't the first ship to make it's way to this universe. A ship called the USS Defiant, apparently will, at some point in the Federation Universe's future, will end up in the Empire Universe's past. Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Wimey. And Lorca believes that this information could be the Discovery's path back home. The Plan is to sneak onto the ISS Shenzhou to retrieve information on the Defiant.
Michael's prep speech to tilly about how the Terran Empire's strength as all a smokescreen to hide their constant fear of both the outside and within was great, and after the prep Mary Wiseman really got to show off her acting chops here, switching from our lovable normal tilly to the projection of the evil captain tilly was fantastic.
Meanwhile in medbay, Ash's status as a sleeper is detected by the Doctor, and in response, he cracks, then snaps the doctor's neck. Michael, Ash and Lorca beam over to the ISS Shenzhou, and their cover mission is played perfectly, and the insights we get into Terran society are fantastic. I loved the fight in the elevator, and Michael having to mask her near breakdown over killing someone who has the face of someone knows. Unfortunately, Michael is unable to get the information on the Defiant because the entire crew is either trying to kill her, like Connor, or is playing up a entirely Sycophantic angle to catch her favour.
I'm really excited to see where this arc goes. I've kinda already covered all the stuff I would normally put in my conclusion, but I'm hoping we get some deconstruction on the Terran Empire's Fascism, we kind of already did with the aforementioned prep speech between Michael and Sylvia, but I want more of that. It's all to common for fictional evil empires to use the aesthetic of Fascism without really doing anything to deconstruct it or show it's failings (Cough, Star Wars, Cough). On the whole I am optomistic for this though, it's definitely falling more in line with the kind of Multiverse story that I like, and fingers crossed it stays that way.

Both of the main ones I'm working on now are platonic! But also you've opened the door for me to talk about it so I'm gonna talk about it!
The post-season 3 fic is platonic and--I cannot overstate this enough--has so much of a plot going on across multiple characters that I finally broke down and made a fucking spreadsheet.
That said a lot of Roy's struggle in this fic centers around his emotional attachments with other people and the roles he plays in their lives (with family, with friends, as a coach). He's stuck in this perfect storm where it seems like all his most important relationships are in flux.

His Family
This is a big one for him and where a surprising amount of therapy work gets done. When the story kicks off, Phoebe is suddenly Around Much Less and a part of that is his sister tentatively feeling out a reconciliation with their parents. This causes a surprising (to Roy) amount of emotional upheaval in his life. As someone who's always been in his sister's corner, he's always seen (even if he's never fully verbalized it to himself) his keeping contact with their parents as a way of releasing his sister from any responsibility or lingering guilt about cutting them off. But now that she's tentatively in contact with them, and introducing them to Phoebe, Roy is realizing that he has a lot of unresolved issues with his parents. Adding to that stress is the fact that while he's played a huge role in his niece's life, he's never actually had to ask to spend time with her before, and he is awful at admitting he might need something, especially when the people around him keep telling him he can 'have a break.'
Keeley
He and Keeley have decided to remain friends. Keeley wants to be single for a while and work on herself, her company, and all the special projects she has falling out of her sleeves (*cough*womensteam*cough*). However, Keeley is the most serious relationship he's ever had, and they started out on a flirty, romantic footing, so he's never just been friends with her. In fact he's never stayed friends with any of his exes. He's navigating unfamiliar territory and he's not sure what's allowed of him. Even basic shit--is he allowed to tell her she looks nice? invite her for coffee? for dinner?--he ends up second guessing.
The Diamond Dogs / The Workplace
He literally JUST became a Diamond Dog and showed them emotional vulnerability by asking what the secret was to becoming a less shitty person and now he's in charge of them. (And he's in therapy, seeing the staff therapist, so everybody knows about that too.) With Ted gone, the inter-team dynamics between the coaches is a whirlpool of Beard and Nate trying to out-smart each other, and suddenly Roy is the one keeping everybody in line and fielding Higgins' questions about player recruitment. This isn't the big drama but it is mundane and tedious and just another fucking thing to deal with.
The Team (Sam, Isaac, Colin)
The step between captain and assistant coach was a fairly easy one for Roy because he was essentially doing the same thing in both jobs (yell at them about their form, psych them up before a match, etc). He's the gaffer now. Most gaffers don't just casually hang out with their players. If he was another team's gaffer, he wouldn't. But these are people who know him, people he used to play side-by-side with, and god help him but he does care about them. So while he's pretty sure he needs to start drawing a boundary between the professional and personal, how the fuck is he supposed to tell them that when Colin is literally getting chewed up by the media as the only openly gay player in the league and he clearly needs the support? How's he supposed to back away when Sam, who's never angry about anything, is fucking seething over Edwin Akufo and asking Roy for help? Is he supposed to step back and drop it all on Isaac, who's trying his best but also seems to be carrying his own weight about something? They're not not his friends, but also he feels responsible for them. So what kind of coach is he going to be, now that he's the guy in charge?
Jamie (ofc)
Where does any of the above leave Jamie? Truly, if the boundaries between him and the other players are in flux, the ones between him and Jamie are fucking spaghetti. Because all of the same issues still apply, but with additional layers (their rivalry, Keeley, Amsterdam, Wembley, personal coaching, the fact that he's met Jamie's parents and would punch his dad in the face if he ever got a chance, the fact that his niece thinks they're best friends). His partiality is skewed every-which-fucking-way, and frankly he's a little annoyed that no one else holds it against him.
And all of that becomes additionally fucked up because:
Roy going to therapy is intrinsically tied to his behavior towards Jamie (Roy has a lot of guilt to work through on how often he's taken his anger out on Jamie)
Jamie and him have unwisely turned therapy into a goddamn competition (they have a chart), which means that any time he makes progress in therapy, he immediately ends up sharing it with Jamie
They don't even have the coach-player thing to fall back on because Jamie starts off the summer injured
This is also the Jamie Going Through It fic (with Tartt Sr in rehab being a huge part of that), and at this point its a given (to Roy at least) that if Jamie needs help, Roy is going to help him.
Jamie might be his friend. Maybe. Possibly. Roy might even admit that one day
So is this a shippy fic? No! No relationship statuses are added, lost, or changed in the winding plot of this fic (unless I figure out how to break up Beard and Jane). Everything picks up right where the finale left it.
But do relationships--the weight of identifying what you might need from other people, and how to navigate changes, and how to define things that aren't easy that are maybe complicated and messy and necessary for your own personal happiness--appear in this fic?
Absolutely yes.
