HIII WIFI nightly thoughts anon here, I hope you're doing good ! No brainrot this time but I'd very much like to know more about your oc and Arlecchino, like how did they met and ended up married ? Does Marine also work with the Fatui and the House of hearth ?? You can answer in character if you want I'm just so curious and love learning about ocs!!
*giggles and swings legs* you're humoring meeeee thank youuuuu :] gonna answer normally since this it got rambly (also this is full of headcanons just fyi, and this got LONG)
Marine and Arlecchino met at a masquerade ball! i personally think that Furina hosted one for her birthday every year, since it was the perfect dramatic event that she thought an archon would have for their birthday. as Furina's attendant, Marine is required to go (mostly to quell any trouble that might occur), but she usually just stands to the side since she doesn't really love huge social gatherings. Arlecchino was attending a few years back as a representative of the Harbingers (and since she's from Fontaine, she is invited to attend anyways since all citizens of Fontaine are allowed to come) and Marine struck up a conversation since she was curious and standing nearby. both of them dislike social events and started bonding, they both think it's very funny that they both happen to have relatively high standings in their respective government systems :]
a few other things about that specific evening: - Arlecchino ended up finding out Marine's position when Furina called her over for something. Marine made her own educated guess that Arlecchino was a Harbinger due to her voice and her veiled disdain for the event - they both snuck outside after a few hours and met up again to chat. Arlecchino found out that Marine loves rainbow roses for their scent -since they were both wearing masks, Arlecchino asked to see Marine's face. Marine agreed, but only if Arlecchino also took off her own mask. they still laugh about it to this day, since Marine can't see Arlecchino's face to begin with
the next time Arlecchino visited Fontaine, she spotted Marine and tapped her shoulder to ask if she remembered her, and Marine just gasped in delight and went "I could never forget such a beautiful voice!" and things just blossomed from there!
Marine does NOT work with the Fatui! she is Furina's attendant, but the people of Fontaine put a lot of trust in her like they do with Neuvillette, so in a way she's third in the hierarchy of Fontaine's government and as such is sometimes sent to meet with foreign ambassadors and things like that. she does visit the House of the Hearth often once she and Arlecchino become a couple and the children are quick to start calling her "Mother", which she doesn't mind at all (Furina and the Melusine already think of her as a mother figure) and in general she makes the children's lives a little brighter with her presence
also Arlecchino and Marine are the type to not get married for YEARS just because they're so busy and already married in their heads. at the current point of the story (after the Fontaine Archon Quests) they've been together for a bit and won't get married for a few more years. it actually takes some of the children asking Arlecchino when she'll marry Marine for her to actually propose. but they do eventually become wives and are very happy together :] Furina almost screams when she finds out because on one hand her mother figure is getting married yay!!! but on the other hand THAT'S A HARBINGER AND SHE'S SCARY
here's a few more fun facts i think YOU should know!!! - since Marine can't see, she often asks to touch Arlecchino's face to map out her features- also because she can feel Arlecchino's cheeks heat up a little and thinks it's cute - Marine calls Arlecchino either "mon cœur" (my heart) or "Arle", and Arlecchino calls Marine either "ma chérie" (my darling) or "Mari" (forgive me if the french is incorrect) - Marine is taller than Arlecchino if she stands on her toes, but shorter if she doesn't - they become the source of inspiration for a Fontainain fairy tale a few decades in the future called "The Oceanid and the Firebird" - opera :] dates :] - Arlecchino is secretly a little pleased that Marine's skin is artificial because then her nails won't accidentally scratch her - they hold hands SOOOOO MUCH. Marine even takes her gloves off which she rarely does because she's like a ball-jointed doll - Arlecchino had a braille printing machine ordered specifically so she can send Marine letters while she's in Snezhnaya - good lord there is soooooo much quiet yearning when they're apart - Marine is trying to get better at expressing herself since she sort of just calmly smiled through the 500 years and Arlecchino loves seeing her wife get excited about tiny things - they dance in the rain together - definitely a case of opposites attract appearance and aesthetic-wise - Marine opens her eyes a lot more around Arlecchino and she loves it, she adores getting to see Marine's eyes framed by her lashes. in contrast Marine loves Arlecchino's voice and will often ask her to talk about anything - FOREHEAD KISSES - the Melusine have started calling Arlecchino their second father. she can't get them to stop and Marine won't tell her how because she thinks it's hilarious
sorry i just love them so much augh

mmmmm i dont have coherent thoughts rn but
nikolai parallels with the melusines. who were both ostracized by their origins or appearance.
nikolai finally meeting silvanus again and being nervous about walking around in public since he has a tail and visible scales/rashes but is encouraged by silvie and lyney/lynette/freminet to go out and do things with them.
like furina, he has Trauma when it comes to being on stage and preforming. but he little issue with doing his street preforming acts in other nation [to gather info for the house of hearth/the knave] but but has a hard boundary about doing anything public in fontaine.
thinking about him clumsily meeting the rest of the fontaine cast. and everyone is eager and friendly interacting with him. since a lot of them were there for silvanus' trial and very aware of both of their situations.
charlotte wants to do an interview about about nikolai's disappearance case and how lucky and happy it is to see the siblings reunited after so much pain and misfortune. silvanus quickly doges that and offering charlotte an interview with herself & neuvillette.
wrio has met niko once back when he was caught sneaking about in meropide. wrio is pretty casual/laid back and comments about niko made the right decision. and is very content with seeing silvanus so happy. sigewinne is also very friendly and curious and wants to do a medical exam to see if she could get any new info tohelp his & silvanus' medical condition
niko meets furina in passing while strolling the streets with silvanus. niko used to hateeee the hydro archon. seeing the archon who represented justice let so much injustice happen in fontaine, including his own situation.
Furina very much remembers silvanus' and was rather nonchalant during it all. but absolutely guilt ridden and terrified for silvanus' health. and is obviously terrified when running into both niko and silvanus in the streets. niko knows that she was faking being the archon for a bigger cause. and realizes now that she was a victim of constant performance (just like him, when he was owned by the Evil Circus)
so all those emotions he had towards the hydro archon & fontaine's government system as a whole all funnels to neuvillette instead. he heavily dislikes neuvi's relationship with silvanus and it shows when they interact. neuvi handles it so very awkwardly but neuvillette ends up deeply apologizing for being complicit with injustice that is fontainian high society. and makes it clear the since he has complete authority over the nation he will do everything in his power to stop political corruption that leads to injustice.
and in general i think it would be really cute for the melusines being absolutely enamoured with nikolai since hes also funny looking and has a tail
also dont get me started on the silvanus & nikolai narzissenkreuz adventures. then being the two to face jakob and rene/narzissenkreuz in the primordial see (and now exactly who they are), gives them the lore dump that they are distant relatives and that they have diluted abyssal god juice in their dna which is whats causing their incurable illness.
and after that nikolai goes on this conspiracy theory rabbit hole like an insane person connecting the dots with red string a bulletin board. over the harbinger sandrone who looks so much like mary ann and has an obsession with robotics just like alain guillotin and wants to figure out what the Fuck is up with that (its mostly a personal mission but the knave approves it because itll give HER more info on sandrone to keep in the back of her mind)
o h my god i rambled for so long holy shit. good night

❝You have questions? Of course, I'm always willing to answer them. Though, there may be certain things about me I ought to hold back. Or, perhaps, I can reveal them to you at a later time? Something in me says that you're trustworthy. It's a... gut feeling, you can say. Many often think that things such as gut feeling are unreliable because they're not based on concrete evidence. Hm, I'm not sure on how to define it to you but it certainly has a mystical air to it, right? Intuitive people are not magicians, however, I can tell you that.❞
[ VOICELINE : ABOUT CAELIN - I ]
APPEARANCE: Caelin's youthful appearance consists of average height and fair skin. He has royal blue (#002366) hair that reaches his nape, paired with light blue (#ADD8E6) eyes. In his formal outfit, he dons a white shirt underneath a silver vest that has his Inazuma Hydro Vision clipped onto the left chest with a blue-magenta (#7272a6) ascot tie. He also wears a midnight blue (#191970) coat that hangs loosely on his shoulders with a pair of black pants and shoes. This man is often seen walking around with a pair of round thin glasses and a pair of golden earrings that resemble the sun and moon, a memory of his previous home.
PERSONALITY: Caelin often speaks in a soft-spoken voice (so much so that people think he'd fall asleep halfway through his speech), a sign of his serene and bashful personality paired with obliviousness when faced with things he is unfamiliar with (some mortal customs like modern slang, sarcasm, etc.). But that unfamiliarity is what invokes his child-like curiosity that resemble the bits of innocence Caelin has left even after all these years.
Yet, he is not an open book; many describe Caelin as reserved and solitary which seems to be a self-imposed burden on his part. He is a listener rather than a talker, only sharing details about himself to a select few that he trusts. Due to this, he highly treasures every connection he is able to make such as his bond with the Traveler and shows sincere concern and vulnerability when the person is caught in jeopardy, no matter how trivial or significant. He is also known to be steadfast in his beliefs and values, his usually quiet persona almost completely fading when speaking about them.
LIKES: Salads (with seaweed), bitter drinks, theoretical/intellectual discussions, marine animals, scrolling through the literature sections in magazines.
DISLIKES: Unsolved conflicts, heat and sunny days, sweet or spicy food with too much flavor.
HOBBIES: Writing in his "journal", reading newspapers, taking walks at nighttime, stargazing.
INTERESTS: The inner workings of Celestia, the Steambird (as a way to gain information from all around Teyvat), marine biology, the Traveler's abilities without a Vision.
STRENGTHS: Well-informed of many happenings around Teyvat (a perk of working with newspapers), has a habit of predicting every possible outcome, can communicate with animals (more fluent with marine lives).
WEAKNESSES: Survivor's guilt, his inferior strength compared to other gods.
FEARS: Losing the people he treasures, reliving painful past memories.
[ CW: the trivia section contains some lore about events of the cataclysm! ]
(Ꮺ.) — TRIVIA!
❝It is a gift bestowed upon people whose ambitions catch the eyes of Celestia. I do not wish to speak so freely about those who live in the sky, yet I cannot deny that this is also one of the cores that allowed me to protect others around me in the past. I feel as if this object is caging me but if I am rid of it, then I'd be weaker. Weaker than I already am and if so, then I will not be able to protect what is dear to me at all. Thus, my feelings on it are… unclear.❞ [ VOICELINE : ABOUT THE VISION - HYPOCRISY ]
His given name, Uriel, means "God is my light" in Hebrew and the name was given to him by Orobashi during their first meeting. His mortal alias, Caelin, means "powerful warrior" in Irish.
He is right-handed.
His official MBTI is INFJ.
Caelin often keeps up to date with the literature sections in magazines. He loves poetry and how it allows both the writer and the reader to perceive things in an abstract manner. Other than that, he also finds all the drama and gossip in the romance section to be gripping.
He practices vegetarian diets as a preference. Those who worked under him often comment that his taste in food can be quite unique, such as salad with seaweed in them, pure bitter coffee, and more. Those who know him often joke that his tastebuds don't function normally like other people.
He has a habit of putting too much salt in his food without realizing differences in the taste. This likely stems from his origins as a saltwater creature. (Some even said he put salt instead of sugar in his coffee once... or multiple times, actually. Does he even notice?)
From Caelin's own description of his merman form, his tail is a silky blue that has the same color of his hair and it also subtly glows to help him navigate through the darkness at the bottom of the sea.
He can talk to marine animals and refer to them as his "source of information" because they often relay information to him about a few events observable by the sea shore.
Caelin has a partially physical "journal" that he writes in which is made out of Hydro properties using his Vision and he is able to summon it at any time and out of thin air. Based on the way it appears in one of his idle animations, this "journal" has a similarity to the hologram screens usually found in Sci-fi movies.
His sun and moon earrings are a reference to the mechanism of Dainichi Mikoshi in Enkanomiya which involves light and darkness.
Komaki, an elder of Bourou Village, described his departure from Watatsumi Island as a god to be 'a peaceful resignation' and that he was "a weak but kind god who lent his strength to the people and to the Watatsumi Omikami until peace prevailed".
He became an envoy for Watatsumi Island during Orobashi's reign. This was how he was able to meet and bond with the former Electro Archon, Makoto but he ultimately resigned after her death and Orobashi's.
After the Cataclysm, he grew embittered towards Celestia and left for Fontaine after ensuring that Watatsumi Island's safety will not be threatened for the next millennia. The reason why he chose Fontaine is because the God of Justice is known for "not meddling with the matters of the divine" which gives said region a sense of 'obedience' and thus, less pressure from Celestia's keen eyes.
It is theorized that Caelin is connected to Istaroth, the forgotten God of Time, but this has yet to be elaborated on sufficiently.
And huge props to all the amazing artists that helped bring Caelin to life, including this extra piece by my friend, Jae (@sarcasticqueerblob)! <3

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX Feast Day: August 20
"God will either give us what we ask, or what He knows to be better for us."
The abbot of Clairvaux, confessor, the Last of the Fathers, the Doctor Mellifluus, and a Doctor of the Church, was born of a noble family at Fontaine-lès-Dijon, Burgundy, Kingdom of France in 1090. Bernard was the third of seven children, and his parents were Tescelin de Fontaine, lord of Fontaine-lès-Dijon, and Alèthe de Montbard, both members of the highest nobility of Burgundy. At the age of 9, he was sent to a school at Châtillon-sur-Seine run by the secular canons of Saint-Vorles, and had an interest in literature and rhetoric. He had a special devotion to the Virgin Mary, and he later wrote several works about the Queen of Heaven. At 19, he lost his mother, and during his youth, he did not escape trying temptations and around this time he thought of living a life of solitude and prayer. At the age of 22, while he was at prayer in a church, he felt the calling of God to enter the Cistercian Monks of Cîteaux.
His testimony was so irresistible that 30 of his friends, brothers and relative followed him into monastic life. Three years later, Bernard was sent with 12 monks to found a new monastery at Clairvaux, a forested place in the Valley of Wormwood. The reputation of his holiness soon attracted 130 new monks, including his own father. During the absence of the Bishop of Langres, Bernard was blessed as abbot by William of Champeaux, Bishop of Châlons-sur-Marne. From then on a strong friendship grew between the abbot and the bishop, who was professor of theology at Notre Dame of Paris and the founder of St. Victor Abbey in Paris.
One day in order to cool down his lustful temptation, he threw himself into ice-cold water. Another time, while sleeping in an inn, a prostitute was introduced naked beside him, and he saved his chastity by running. Many miracles were attributed to his intercession. One time, he restored the power of speech to an old man that he might confess his sins before he died. Another time, an immense number of flies, that infested the Church of Foigny, died instantly after the excommunication he made on them. So great was his reputation that Princes and Popes sought his advice, and even the enemies of the Church admired his holiness of his life and the greatness of his writings. Bernard then passed into Germany, and the reported miracles which multiplied almost at his every step undoubtedly contributed to the success of his mission. Conrad III of Germany and his nephew, the future Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick Barbarossa, received the cross from the hand of Bernard.
In 1128, Bernard participated in the Council of Troyes, which had been convoked by Pope Honorius II, and was presided over by Cardinal Matthew of Albano. The purpose of this council was to settle certain disputes of the bishops of Paris, and regulate other matters of the Church of France. The bishops made Bernard secretary of the council, and charged him with drawing up the synodal statutes. After the council, the bishop of Verdun was deposed. It was at this council that Bernard composed a rule for the Knights Templar; it soon became an ideal of Christian nobility. Around this time, he praised them in his 'Liber ad milites templi de laude novae militiae (Book to the Knights of the Temple, in praise of the new knighthood)'.
In 1144, Bernard was commissioned by Pope Eugene III to preach the Second Crusade. Moved by his burning words, many Christians embarked for the Holy Land, but the Crusade ended in total miserable failure. That proved that even saints sometimes can commit mistakes. He died on August 20, 1153 at the age of 62 or 63, in Clairvaux Abbey in the province of Champagne (modern day part of Ville-sous-la-Ferté).
Canonized a saint by Pope Alexander III on January 18, 1174 and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius VIII in 1830, his major shrine can be found at the famed Troyes Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul), where his 12th century reliquary is held. Bernard is the patron saint of candlemakers, beekeepers, and the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon aka the Knights Templar.

Head Canons
Her constellation is named the Ponum Granatum de Orcus. The stars form the shape of a pomegranate.
She is the youngest in a family of 13 sisters. In order they are: Beatrice, Marie, Jolie, Christabella, Louise, Elodie, Rose, Delphine, Sylvie, Fosette, Giselle, Odette, and Alessa
All of the sisters work at the tea shop along with various employees.
Her favorite food is Carrot Cake, and her favorite drink is pomegranate juice.
Four of her sisters are already married, and of her married sisters, two have children. Being the youngest, she cares for the children whenever her sisters come to work at the shop.
She and her sisters are references to Alice in Wonderland characters: Rose (The Caterpillar), Marie (The Mad Hatter), Chirstabella (The Cheshire Cat), Delphine (The Doormouse), Odette (The White Queen), Sylvie (The Knave of Hearts), Fosette (Tweedledee), Louise (The March Hare), Giselle (Tweedledum), Beatrice (The Queen of Hearts), Jolie (The Mock Turtle), Elodie (The Carpenter), and Alessa (The White Rabbit)
She's always running late to things.
Like her mother, Alessa is well mannered and kind and polite however, if she's pushed too far, she becomes rather blunt and rude if need be.
Alessa wields the light vision (Photo) and is a catalyst user. Her use of her ability is newly found as it has only manifested now due to the resurgence of the Photo Archon.
She has never journeyed outside Fontaine but yearns to see the world outside her homeland.
Alessa is a relatively shy being around strangers, she tends to be closed off and unapproachable unless she's in the presence of people she knows.
Her hobbies include tea brewing, tinkering, dancing, and reading.
She loves experimenting with the tea leaves her family purchases and has created unique blends and concoctions sold only by her family's tea shop. This along with the fresh breads made by Chi, is the reason why the shop is so successful and well-known in Fontaine.
She is the only one who knows her recipes, not sharing the information with anyone, so the competition never steals a creation to sell in their cafes.

Mbissine Thérèse Diop in Black Girl (Ousmane Sembene, 1966) Cast: Mbissine Thérèse Diop, Anne-Marie Jelinek, Robert Fontaine, Momar Nar Sene. Ibrahima Boy. Screenplay: Ousmane Sembene, based on a story by Ousmane Sembene. Cinematography: Christian Lacoste. With a run time of just about an hour, Black Girl is a marvel of condensed storytelling, using flashbacks to create its powerful portrait of the wounds of colonialism. It begins in medias res, with Diouana's (Mbissine Thérèse Diop) arrival in France to serve as the maid -- although she expects to work as a nanny, as she had in Dakar -- to a French couple, played by Anne-Marie Jelinek and Robert Fontaine. We learn a bit of her life in Senegal at the same time that we see her disillusionment and eventual slump into depression with what she becomes in the small apartment in Antibes of the couple. The children are away -- presumably at boarding school or with relatives -- and Diouana is forced into a round of cooking and cleaning that she had never expected. She sees nothing of the city outside of the apartment, and is subjected to insults from the couple's guests: An older man, for example, insists on grabbing her and kissing her because, he says, "I've never kissed a negress." The Frenchwoman's friends chatter about Diouana as if she is invisible, asking if she understands French. Told that she does, one of them says she must do so "instinctually" and adds, "like an animal." The result of the exploitation and abuse is tragic, and although what happens might seem melodramatic to some, I think it feels consistent with the way Sembene tells the story, almost as a moral fable. The central symbol of the fable is a mask that Diouana gave to her employers when she first went to work for them in Dakar. She finds it hanging on a wall of the stark modern apartment in Antibes, a touch of decor without significance, and when she decides she's had enough with her life there, she takes it down and puts it with her luggage. She never goes back to Dakar, however, but the man for whom she worked does, and he returns the mask with her belongings to Diouana's mother. A small boy, whom we first saw playing with the mask before Diouana gave it away, finds it and follows the Frenchman, who takes fright and runs away from him -- the European colonizer fleeing the new Africa.

📌 Partie III. (fun facts)
J’ai même failli me faire arrêter.
#DealWithIt.

Cozy Mysteries: books to read
A Game of Cones by Abby Collette
In this charming mystery series set in an ice cream shop, no case is too cold to crack! Bronwyn Crewse is delighted that Crewse Creamery, the ice cream shop her family has owned for decades, is restored to its former glory and serving sweet frozen treats to happy customers in the picturesque small town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. But when a big city developer comes to town intent on building a mall, a killer with a frozen heart takes him out. After literally stumbling across the body, one of Win's closest friends becomes the prime suspect, and to make things worse, Win's aunt has come to town with the intention of taking command of Crewse Creamery. Even though Win has a rocky road ahead to help her friend and keep her ice cream shop, it'll take more than a sprinkle of murder to stop her from solving the crime and saving the day.
How to Raise an Elephant by Alexander McCall Smith
The next book in the perennially adored No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series sees Precious Ramotswe calling upon all her maternal instincts when she's faced with a two-ton case. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but can Mma Ramotswe and the rest of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency come together to raise a pipsqueak pachyderm? We may find out in this novel. We may not. Who can say?
The Question of the Dead Mistress by E.J. Copperman, Jeff Cohen
"Is my husband having an affair with a dead woman?" For Samuel Hoenig, the proprietor of a unique agency called Questions Answered, the answer to this most recent question is simple. Since there's absolutely no evidence that apparitions exist, it would be impossible for Ginny Fontaine's husband to be having an affair with one. But Samuel's associate, Janet Washburn, isn't so easily convinced. Wrestling with his complicated feelings for Ms. Washburn, Samuel proposes that she take the lead on the question. As soon as her research begins, the husband in question ends up dead, leaving Janet and Samuel wondering if they stand a ghost of a chance at unraveling this twisted tale of danger and deceit.
One for the Road by Mary Ellis
Travel writer Jill Curtis is drawn into a deadly blend of rivalry, resentment and romance gone wrong when she stumbles into a bourbon war between two Kentucky families in this first in an intoxicating new cozy mystery series. Travel writer Jill Curtis loves her job, but she desperately needs a break if she's to achieve her dream of becoming an investigative reporter. Sent to Kentucky by her boss to find out why thousands of tourists flock to Bourbon Country every year, Jill's dream seems to be slipping further away. After all, nothing interesting ever happens in small town America . . . does it? Staying at an estranged relative's B&B, Jill's plan to uncover what makes the state's bourbon tours so popular goes awry when she trips over a body at one of the distilleries and quickly becomes a suspect in a brutal murder. Can she navigate high-stakes bourbon rivalries, centuries-old family feuds and ill-fated romance to catch a killer and finally land the promotion she craves?

2020 Releases that I listened to more than once / stuck with me in some way.
Excuse my pessimism, but 2020 was a year in which finding solace in music was of little use to me. I also had less time than ever to listen to music. I spent the worst of the pandemic displaced and with limited internet access, then moved to another city and switched careers, two changes which I still haven’t fully comprehended. I also spent 98% of my free time feeling too anxious about the future as a whole to do any sort of listening, focused or passive.
Things eventually got settled enough that I could at least check out what various music publications were fussing about in their year-end round ups. Not the most ideal avenue for discovery, but this has been a hard, tiring year and, despite some very promising releases and trends, I still feel a bit hopeless. I can’t even really be bothered to do any sort of ranking or make things even with a “20 for 2020,” so instead here’s a summary of some music that stood out to me. I can promise there are at least 15 releases mentioned - you can do a “choose your own adventure”  and rank them as you wish.
youtube
Without a doubt, the only 2020 record that truly elevated me to a place where I stopped stressing out about things was Protomartyr’s Ultimate Success Today. These guys are by far my favorite band right now and their fifth album gave me so many new reasons to love them, from the propulsive “Michigan Hammers” and its stock footage masterpiece of a music video to elegant closer “Worm in Heaven.” Saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and multi-instrumentalist Izaak Mills were deployed on most tracks and, rather than merely serving as a garnish for songs, their contributions added as much tension, heft, and brutal beauty as Protomartyr’s core members. Add in Half Waif’s Nandi Rose guesting on the Very Sad “June 21,” and you have one genuinely faultless release. In a similar vein, Algiers released their third and arguably strongest full-length, There is No Year, back in January and it served as a powerful, prescient (the title alone!) and just plain awesome reminder to keep fighting in even the darkest of times.
This year I occasionally found myself praying for disco and I’m pretty sure Doja Cat’s sorta Chic-inspired “Say So” was the song I listened to the most in 2020 (yes, shame on me for a million different reasons). But little did I know 2020 was such an abundant year for mirrorball-indebted releases. Kylie Minogue’s Disco was a given, but what especially thrilled me were Roisin Murphy’s Roisin Machine and Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure? Murphy’s outstanding “Murphy’s Law” especially sounds like a lost classic from the ‘70s, while Ware’s titular “What’s Your Pleasure” is as fitting a Donna Summer tribute as any you could come across in the past 40 or so years. Ware’s record became slightly less cool when I realized she’s a podcasting mom who is friends with Adele, but What’s Your Pleasure?’s irresistible procession of Great Pop Moments solidifies it as one release I’ll keep coming back to.
(Bonus: if you favor a no-wave / post-punk spin on disco, then look no further than Public Practice’s Gentle Grip).
youtube
Ware and Murphy have been particularly prevalent on many of the major year-end lists, but I still carry a bit of skepticism about such things. Therefore, discussions such as this sub-Reddit (sorry) thread on regional picks has been useful in thinking outside the US and UK-favoring ranking systems (although there’s still a lot of anglo shit listed there as well). I’m hoping to listen to more releases from oft-overlooked countries thanks to some of these Redditors’ suggestions, although I’ve already spent a bit of time with Einsturzende Neubauten’s Alles in Allem and remain Team Blixa (if such a team exists). Despite my aforementioned trepidation, The Quietus’  list did compel me to check out the wonderfully somber offerings of Closed Circuits. This Portuguese artist describes himself as “Leonard Cohen being bothered by Coil,” and if that doesn’t entice you, I fear you may be a lost cause.
This year we moved to Philadelphia, which means...A lot of things, but relevant to this summary, we found ourselves driving past some provocative graffiti stating “Make America Nothing Again” numerous times. Eventually I put two and two together and gave Nothing’s The Great Dismal a listen. Having not expected much beyond the clever marketing, I was pleasantly wowed by the quartet’s moody post-shoegaze offerings. I can barely discern any of the lyrics, but on vibe alone, The Great Dismal perfectly captures the heavy despair that permeated 2020. Add in Korine’s gloom-pop The Night We Raise and I can confidently say that Philly’s music scene is in good hands.
I might have lied a bit at the start of this post - in saying I didn’t listen to music throughout 98% of the pandemic, I’m overlooking the many car rides spent revisiting Fontaines D.C.’s brilliant 2019 debut, Dogrel. While it didn’t impress me quite as much, this year’s A Hero’s Death was a mostly worthy successor, interspersing a few tranquil moments among the band’s more confrontational offerings. Not all of those moments worked for me, but these new directions were enticing enough for me to officially consider Fontaines a Band To Watch, if that’s still something people say. Oh yeah, and the video for the title tune slams.
Speaking of music videos, I don’t usually rely on this medium for discovering bands, but that changed this year with Dehd. The trio’s videos are vibrant, conceptually clever, and relentlessly fun. Thank goodness that the music lives up to Dehd’s visual knack, with Flower of Devotion at times recalling The Jesus and Mary Chain and Roy Orbison in equal measure (especially on the stunning “Letter”). Emily Kempf’s versatile singing reminds me of everyone from Jana Hunter of Lower Dens to Carla Bozulich of The Geraldine Fibbers, yet it’s still bracing enough that every word she sings sounds utterly gripping. Who knows when gigs will happen again, but Flower of Devotion rocketed these folks to the top of my post-Covid gigging wishlist.
youtube
Sparks is one act I can happily say I’ve seen numerous times. They are never ones to disappoint but, nearly 40 years into their career, the Mael brothers owe us nothing. Yet A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip is somehow an instant classic. It’s nothing short of astonishing that, at 75, Ron Mael can crank out a song that is equal parts insanely catchy, effortlessly humorous and deceptively sad, but he yet again nailed this trifecta with “Lawnmower,” to name but one. Russell Mael’s invincible vocals are in full effect throughout, particularly on the straight up lovely “Pacific Standard Time.” I would never even entertain the idea of using the term “pop / rock juggernaut,” but if it was regarding Sparks, I would at least not dispute it.
(PS, special shout out to another singular duo of relatives, Prima Primo, who this year released my favorite song about Madonna since Sparks’ very own Madge tune, featured on 1988′s Interior Design.)
Finally, this list would absolutely be incomplete if I didn’t give mention to Bob Dylan’s fabulous Rough and Rowdy Ways. More than ever, 2020 felt like a year rife with stupid decisions, stupid actions and praise for mediocrity. A return to form from perhaps the greatest lyricist of all time is something many of us probably didn’t know we needed, but boy am I thankful for it (not as thankful as I would be for a second stimulus check, but still - next best thing). Dylan also gave us the fun bonus of having Fiona Apple guest on the outstanding “Murder Most Foul,” and of course Apple’s own Fetch the Bolt Cutters both featured her dogs as percussion and further solidified her place in the socio-political songwriting canon. Maybe there is something to be said for music after all!

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day.
Today’s status is dedicated to Carroll Thompson, Janet Kay, Victor Romero Evans, Louisa Mark, Jean Adebambo (RIP), Sandra Cross, Donna Rhoden, Matumbi, Legato, The Cool Notes, Claudia Fontaine (RIP), Winston Reedy, The Investigators, Junior English, Brown Sugar, Trevor Hartley, 15 16 17, Prediction, Peter Hunnigale, Michael Gordon, Kofi, Paulette Tajah, Trevor Walters, Marie Pierre, Erica Gale, John McLean, Lorna Gee, Sylvia Tella, The Administators, Arema, Keith Douglas, The Instigators and all the British acts that forged the lover’s rock sound in the seventies/eighties, and made very little money from it!
This status is also dedicated to all the house party sound system men that strung up their boxes in the afternoon and, long after everyone had gone home and gone to sleep, these men would still be packing away their gear in some garage or lock-up, possibly 14 or 15 hours later and, only then, could they relax, get into bed and sleep. For how much money? Split between four or five people? £3 an hour, if they were lucky!
This status is also dedicated to all the people that went to soul and reggae house parties in the seventies and eighties, impeccably dressed, behaved themselves, had a good time, had a few drinks, ate some food, laughed with old friends, made a new friend or two and, in the early hours, came home (relatively) sober with their clothes slightly crushed and sweaty but still looking smart!
To all those that worked so hard to establish a lover’s rock scene in the UK, I salute you! It was a labour of love. Nobody got rich. These artists and sound men worked hard to entertain people into the wee, small hours because they loved the music. It spoke to them. It moved them. And lovers of lover’s rock know how important that music still is to this day. I married a girl that sang in a lover’s rock group and she knows the words to every song from that era. Good times!
Have a throbbing and thrusting Thursday (with hopefully a few thrills through your thoroughfare?) I love you all. And, remember, if you’ve read one of my books and enjoyed it, please go back to Amazon and leave a review. Fanx!

The First Day of PCDMas
On the first day of Christmas, Precure Daily gave to me....
A whole bunch of Healin’ Good news!
Tumblr media
(remember, the 12 days of Christmas start on the 25th, they don’t count down to it. And yes I’m a day late on this, I’m sorry)
Merry Christmas everyone! What a day it is! A WHOLE bunch of Healin’ Good Precure news dropped on us today! We got an official look at our characters transformed and as civilians, their mascots, the premise, and the cast! And oh boy I need to talk about this cast. In the lead role, as the pink Cure Grace, AKA Hanadera Nodoka, is none less than Yuki Aoi, one of my favorite seiyuu currently working and someone I’ve been wishing for years now would get tapped to play a Precure. You probably know her as the voice of Madoka from Madoka Magica, Tsuyu from My Hero Academia, Hibiki from Symphogear, or even as Eevee from Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee. If you’re a tokusatsu fan, she was the voice of Yurusen in Kamen Rider Ghost, and as a child she briefly appeared in Gingaman and Gaoranger, and played young Mari in an episode of Kamen Rider Faiz. She has a lot of other credits to her name, she’s very prolific and I don’t have time to list them all, so look her up if you’re still not familiar. Her trademark is her slightly raspy voice, especially when she gets emotional. Needless to say, this is a huge get for Precure, even in a franchise that’s had Yukana, Mizuki Nana, Koshimizu Ami, and Han Megumi. In fact they’ve tapped such a big star for the Pink that the other lead characters are played by relative nobodies, with scarcely any roles to their names. For posterity:
Cure Fontaine/Sawaizumi Chiyu - Yorita Natsu
Cure Sparkle/Hiramitsu Hinata - Kono Hiyori
I’m all for giving new talent a big break, and starring alongside one of the biggest names in the industry will definitely be good for their careers.
As far as their designs go, although I’m normally drawn to yellows, Cure Sparkle isn’t appealing to me yet. Maybe she’ll grow on me. I like Fontaine’s look, but due to my heavy bias towards her seiyuu, Grace will probably be my favorite of the show. I really like the bob cut she has before she transforms, it doesn’t resemble her cure hair at all, and that’s something you don’t often see so I’m here for it.
Now, let me explain a little more about my 12 Days of Christmas. They will NOT interrupt my regular reviews, I still plan to get through ep 20 by the end of the year. What’s going to happen is that each day until January 5th I’ll post a little something special: favorite characters, seasons, songs, etc. This seems like a much easier way to celebrate Christmas on the blog than reviewing all of the Christmas episodes now doesn’t it?
Speaking of that, though, when I get a chance I will reblog last year’s PCD Xmas and add the Star Twinkle episode. When I get to it. So that’s something to look forward to.
I hope everyone’s christmas was very merry, if you celebrate Hanukkah happy fourth night of that, happy Kwanzaa, happy Yule, season’s greetings, and if you don’t celebrate anything, happy Wednesday to you! More Precure Daily of multiple varieties coming to you SOON!

Handling love interests: Good vs. Bad
Good: The TRR team making Maxwell Beaumont a love interest with his own route late in book two when they realized how popular he was.
Bad: The TE team forcing Beckett excessively and into scenes he doesn’t belong to the point where even Beckett stans are sick of it.
Good: Creating clear chemistry and sexual tension between MC and Sonia Alves, allowing them to overcome the boundaries of their moral alignments and opposing goals to realize their feelings for one another.
Bad: Paywalling the hell of out female love interests and making it nearly impossible to learn anything about them without paying boatloads of diamonds, let alone get closer to them.
Good: Giving mostly equal screentime to all the love interests.
Bad: Excluding love interests from stories for multiple chapters (one chapter = one week), such as Asha Roanhorse, Aster D’Yew, and many of the AtV love interests.
Good: Giving love interests backstories and keeping them consistent, such as Jake McKenzie’s fear of getting close to anyone else after he lost Mike and was forced to abandon his family after being branded a traitor.
Bad: Giving love interests characteristics or lifestyles and failing to keep them consistent, such as Ahmed Kabbaz drinking and mentioning partaking in alcohol in the past after he made a point not to because of his religion (PB fixed this, but it’s still ridiculous that these mistakes happened in the first place).
Good: Allowing the player to opt out of romancing anyone if they so choose.
Bad: Forcing the player to hold Adrian’s hand, hold Jax’s hand, or hold both their hands (PB also fixed this, and yet again, it’s still ridiculous that the option to not hold anyone’s hand wasn’t present in the first place).
Good: Including a diverse selection of love interests with relatively equal screentime and not pushing any one of them upon the player, such as in ILB.
Bad: Constantly, constantly, constantly forcing the white male (usually blonde) love interest on players regardless of whether or not they want to pursue him, such as in Wishful Thinking, The Elementalists, Passport to Romance, and many more.
Good: Giving the player the option to pursue one love interest or have an open relationship.
Bad: Disregarding the player’s explicit choice to pursue a monogamous relationship and allowing them to essentially cheat on their love interest, like in RCD and BB.
Good: Not necessarily giving the fans absolutely everything they want for a love interest, as it may be lower in quality than what was already written.
Bad: Giving the players the option to romance Kate O’Malley during the very last chapter of VoS because they wanted her as a love interest...and making it a diamond choice...and not expanding on the relationship...and overall making it really unfulfilling.
Good: Making a former antagonist a love interest, but only after they’ve actively tried to redeem themselves, such as Becca Davenport and Ellen Thompson.
Bad: Making a former antagonist a love interest even though they’ve proven to be extremely toxic in the past, such as Victoria Fontaine (she physically assaulted MC in a fit of rage, if you think I would ever date a person who did that to me, think again).
Good: Creating one or two love interests with similar personalities, such as Maxwell Beaumont and Tomoichi Sato, who are both goofy and serve as the comic relief in their stories.
Bad: Creating too many love interests with more than incidentally similar personalities, such as Drake Walker, Damien Nazario, Nick Peralta, Colt Kaneko, and Dallas James, who are all the grouchy/cynical people in their stories.
Good: Creating love interests who are flawed yet likable characters, such as Eleanor Waverley, Kenji Katsaros, and Parker Shaw.
Bad: Creating a blatant Mary-Sue, such as Rory Silva (ugh).
Good: Allowing the player to stay dedicated to a love interest by keeping their appearances frequent and giving the player options to take things all the way to marriage in some cases.
Bad: Writing a love interest out of a series never to be seen again, such as Rose Blake, Kyle Garza, and Cleopatra.

Today's Straggling Walking Photos: Well, I’m finally home, back in good ol’ Portland. Yesterday was a long day of travel, with a significant delay on my very last flight, so I got in late and there was just no way I was doing this post before turning in. So here you go now, just before I leave for today’s walk in my comfortable and familiar – and warm in relative terms – neighborhood. This is a collection of shots taken on Wednesday in Montreal, using both my good camera and my iPhone.
Wednesday’s walk was an afternoon outing with my sister, my Aunt Marie, my cousin Christine and her friend Françoise in search of Montreal’s popular food item, poutine. For those unfamiliar, the traditional poutine consists of a pile of french fries topped with cheese curds and a specially concocted gravy or sauce. Sort of the ultimate comfort food. Poutine has definitely made inroads into the States in recent years, but Montreal is regarded by many as the poutine mecca. Though I’ve visited Canada (Montreal and other cities) many times over the years, I’d never actually experienced poutine prior to this trip. Pithy comments on the photos follow…
Look, it’s my lovely sister Kathryn, walking through the borough of Le Plateau-Mont-Royal and snapping photos just like I am! I was going to crop out the stroller-pushing Quebecois gentleman, but honestly his disapproving side-eye is just too priceless to leave out. (”Tch – les Americains!”)
My still-spry Aunt Marie (in her mid-80s I believe), my cousin Christine and her friend Françoise lead the way to the poutine, strolling down the middle of the street because…I guess because it was just easier than dealing with the only-sporadically-cleared sidewalks? Just loved the buildings in this neighborhood.
Behold, la poutine! At first I thought I should go with the standard, original recipe, but this variation, La Taquise, just held too much appeal: sour cream, guacamole and diced tomatoes in addition to the basics. It. Was. Delicious. It was also Too. Much. Food. Sadly I left almost half of it behind. But if you’re ever in Montreal, head over to La Banquise and choose from over 30 varieties of the local delicacy.
Montreal Fire Station #16! This gorgeous structure was built in 1891.
Ice skaters in La Fontaine Park, near our poutine haven. A very nice park, and no doubt extremely popular in warmer weather.
All hail the Jaunty Walker! That’s the name my family has given this enthusiastic fellow appearing in the Canadian walk signal seen all across this wonderful country. If you’re not charmed by the Jaunty Walker, you’re just living wrong. I’m sorry.
This snow-topped praying statue was an irresistible photo subject. Quite serene and cooperative too.
Ultimately it was time to say goodbye to Montreal, seen here from the air. Hope to be back sooner than later.
Thanks for tolerating these sporadic posts during my trip. Things should get back to normal sooooooooooooon.
